  1. We are in a season of church called Glimpses of Glory and Grace.

  2. We're in the book of Isaiah.

  3. 700 years before the life of Jesus, a man called Isaiah spoke God's words to the kings of Jerusalem.

  4. They were words of judgment, predicting the nation's rebellion against God.

  5. They were also words of hope in a redeemer who God would raise up to pay for the sin of God's people and turn away God's wrath.

  6. Isaiah's words in the impact that he made outlived the kings that he served and even Isaiah himself.

  7. Isaiah's words spoke directly into the spiritual needs of God's people and they speak to our needs too.

  8. These chapters are glimpses of God as glorious and gracious.

  9. All people need something more glorious than what they can find in this world.

  10. And all people need grace if God is who he says he is.

  11. He's so wonderful and amazing and perfect and powerful and mighty and majestic that we're going to need his help.

  12. If we, the broken people of this broken world, are going to come to him.

  13. You and I need Isaiah, this book, in our life.

  14. Theologian Tim Chester says that Isaiah is like a bridge.

  15. A bridge between our side of history and the cross of Jesus Christ, reaching back to the origins of a nation called Israel, who God chose to be his people.

  16. Isaiah is a bridge, a connection for those who find forgiveness in freedom in the Messiah in 2023.

  17. But also for those who knew the Messiah only as a promise.

  18. A gracious promise that one day he would save the then divided nation of Israel and Judah through his coming Messiah King.

  19. Every year we quote Isaiah at Easter time and at Christmas.

  20. It's because of these many glimpses that Isaiah gives us of who this Messiah is going to be.

  21. What his nature is going to be.

  22. What he's going to do.

  23. What his kingdom is going to look like.

  24. Even how he's going to be born.

  25. How he's going to die.

  26. Isaiah has unrivaled depth and clarity.

  27. It's the coolest pair of sunnies in the Old Testament.

  28. That we get to look through and see who the Messiah is going to be.

  29. So in this series you're going to see that the God of the Old Testament that we hear about in Isaiah is the same God that in history is recorded in the New Testament.

  30. He is most holy.

  31. He brings justice and fair judgment for sin.

  32. He is by nature merciful, loving and compassionate.

  33. Providing hope to all nations.

  34. I honestly can't wait to share more of Isaiah.

  35. The bridge of Isaiah with you.

  36. As we see glimpses of this glorious and gracious God.

  37. So we're going to start in chapters 1 to 5.

  38. And then as we go through today we're going to get to Isaiah 6.

  39. And we're going to spend most of our time there in Isaiah 6 as Anne has read out.

  40. Thank you Anne.

  41. So let's open up our Bible.

  42. Make sure we've got Isaiah open.

  43. Turn to chapter 1.

  44. And I'm going to, no, I'm not going to read the whole thing.

  45. We're going to start our journey and step across this bridge.

  46. Isaiah is a bit like watching an opera.

  47. Or a symphony.

  48. Or a musical.

  49. Like these, Isaiah begins with an overture.

  50. An overture is a musical preview.

  51. It contains all, many of the melodies that are to come in the performance.

  52. The emotional movements of the story to come.

  53. We might not know why the tune sounds like that yet.

  54. But the overture gives us that feeling and the gravity of what's going to come next.

  55. Just without all the details.

  56. It opens our ears and focuses our minds.

  57. So let's listen to three melodies that we're going to hear through Isaiah.

  58. In Isaiah's prophetic overture.

  59. The first melody is this intimidating and fearsome, unstoppable melody of judgment and exile.

  60. God himself says,

  61. I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.

  62. God pronounces judgment after judgment.

  63. Woes on his people.

  64. He foreshadows a time of loss and pain in chapters 1 to 5.

  65. Like it's already happening to Israel.

  66. He even calls Israel by two awful names.

  67. Sodom and Gomorrah.

  68. Two cities that were judged for their exceptional wickedness.

  69. As he was to those two cities.

  70. God is weary of Israel's wickedness and empty prayers.

  71. This melody is bleak.

  72. And Isaiah uses imagery to help us understand how bleak it is.

  73. These are the different instruments that are playing this melody.

  74. Here are a few.

  75. Their fall be like the shattering of a mighty falling tree.

  76. Like seductive women who will have their beauty taken away.

  77. Like staggering drunks who are deceived and pushed by evil people into pits.

  78. Like fools led by children.

  79. They're going to wildly go astray.

  80. Isaiah even sings.

  81. Told you it was a musical.

  82. He sings this mournful love song.

  83. I will sing for the one I love about a song about his vineyard.

  84. My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside.

  85. The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel.

  86. And the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in.

  87. He looked for justice but saw bloodshed.

  88. For righteousness but heard cries of distress.

  89. Can you hear the melody?

  90. Can you hear the main theme of this overture?

  91. It's terrifying.

  92. But interwoven with woe after woe, horror after horror,

  93. are these two sweet melodies.

  94. And as we go through Isaiah, as you read through Isaiah yourself,

  95. and as we explore it as a church,

  96. I want to encourage you to be looking for these

  97. and listening for these two melodies in the symphony of Isaiah.

  98. And the first is the soft call of grace.

  99. In chapter one, we can see that there is forgiveness.

  100. There is a chance for Israel and Judah,

  101. God's people, to turn things around.

  102. God says to them,

  103. though your sins are like scarlet,

  104. they shall be white as snow.

  105. Though they are red as crimson,

  106. they shall be like wool.

  107. And how will God do this?

  108. How could God be leading Israel to ruin

  109. and also make them pure before him?

  110. Well, we get a glimpse of a name in this tune.

  111. In chapter four, verse two,

  112. the name of this redeemer,

  113. this one who will save,

  114. is called the branch of the Lord,

  115. one who will bring shelter and cleansing

  116. to the people of this broken,

  117. wayward vineyard.

  118. And then melody number two,

  119. after the chords crash with a crescendo

  120. and there's the empty space after in this overture.

  121. There's these ever so quiet promises

  122. of eternal hope.

  123. Isaiah 1.26 says that there will be a day

  124. where Jerusalem,

  125. the capital of Israel,

  126. will be restored forever.

  127. And later,

  128. in chapter two,

  129. that every nation will gather

  130. to live for God there

  131. in joy.

  132. In the last days,

  133. the mountain of the Lord's temple

  134. will be established

  135. as the highest of the mountains.

  136. It will be exalted above the hills

  137. and all nations will stream to it.

  138. Many peoples will come to it and say,

  139. come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,

  140. to the temple of the God of Jacob.

  141. He will teach us his ways

  142. so that we may walk in his paths.

  143. A day of restoration is coming.

  144. One to five of Isaiah,

  145. the overture,

  146. promises that Isaiah as a whole

  147. is going to sound like overwhelming judgment,

  148. especially for our ears

  149. thousands of years later.

  150. But keep listening to those recurring melodies

  151. of the grace of God

  152. and his promise of forgiveness

  153. and eternal hope.

  154. God will bring justice and redemption

  155. for his multi-ethnic people

  156. and he will declare them

  157. holy.

  158. Holy.

  159. But now the movement of the symphony

  160. unfolds in chapter six.

  161. The orchestra crescendos into something new

  162. and the curtains part

  163. and the cast come out

  164. to start the first number

  165. and so we see

  166. what will happen next.

  167. So I'm going to pray

  168. before we explore further

  169. in Isaiah chapter six.

  170. Let's pray.

  171. God,

  172. you have all authority.

  173. You're gracious

  174. and you bring hope.

  175. So I ask that you would graciously change us

  176. through the words of this old book.

  177. Speak to us as if promised by your Holy Spirit

  178. so that we see you for who you've always been,

  179. who you were to Israel,

  180. who you were to Isaiah

  181. and who you will always be

  182. to us.

  183. Amen.

  184. Amen.

  185. When I first moved to Sydney,

  186. it was mid-2000s

  187. and everyone I met

  188. when they were talking,

  189. when I was getting to know them,

  190. they would talk

  191. about

  192. a season of life

  193. that came before

  194. when I wasn't in Sydney

  195. and the season of life now

  196. that I kind of knew

  197. and understood.

  198. Chatswood looked very different.

  199. The train station

  200. was a totally different shape.

  201. Right now,

  202. I'd need a map

  203. of how it used to be

  204. to try and remember it.

  205. Everything is so different

  206. just over there.

  207. Everyone I met

  208. when I came to Sydney,

  209. when I was getting to know them,

  210. marked time

  211. by talking about

  212. a season of life before,

  213. something happened

  214. and life now.

  215. And that event

  216. happened in 2001

  217. because people would say

  218. before September 11

  219. or after September 11.

  220. Terrorist attacks in the USA

  221. changed the world

  222. on September 11.

  223. If you're new to Chatswood,

  224. you might be hearing

  225. the same thing.

  226. If you're new to Sydney,

  227. you might hear

  228. people talk

  229. about a before COVID

  230. and an after COVID.

  231. The event that's brought

  232. incredible insecurity

  233. and anxiety.

  234. After COVID,

  235. identities were

  236. changed,

  237. redefined.

  238. After COVID,

  239. everything is different

  240. and we will never

  241. be the same,

  242. even if we might want

  243. everything to be

  244. the same again.

  245. In Isaiah's time,

  246. the southern kingdom

  247. of Israel

  248. had been reigned

  249. over

  250. by King Uzziah

  251. for 50 years.

  252. Judah had prospered.

  253. The people

  254. had followed God.

  255. They'd even have peace

  256. from war.

  257. But a northern kingdom

  258. called Assyria

  259. rose up in great

  260. military power

  261. and began to

  262. annihilate

  263. some of the surrounding

  264. nations

  265. of Judah.

  266. But as long as

  267. King Uzziah

  268. was still alive,

  269. Judah had hope

  270. that they would be saved.

  271. But as Judah

  272. started to

  273. look elsewhere

  274. other than God

  275. for other powerful

  276. nations to trust,

  277. hope started

  278. to slide away

  279. and then it plummeted

  280. because Isaiah

  281. marks his time

  282. in chapter 6

  283. with this terrible event.

  284. In the year

  285. King Uzziah

  286. died.

  287. Here's why you need

  288. to pay attention

  289. to Isaiah 6.

  290. In the year

  291. King Uzziah

  292. died,

  293. when fear

  294. was raining

  295. and everyone

  296. began to realise

  297. that they might

  298. not have any

  299. hope for their

  300. future,

  301. God miraculously

  302. showed up.

  303. He showed

  304. Isaiah

  305. someone

  306. that would

  307. help him

  308. survive

  309. and even

  310. thrive.

  311. And our time

  312. is not Isaiah's,

  313. but

  314. after COVID,

  315. we too

  316. desperately

  317. need to see

  318. what Isaiah

  319. saw.

  320. So what did

  321. Isaiah see?

  322. Isaiah says

  323. in verse 1,

  324. I saw

  325. the Lord.

  326. Now the word

  327. here is not

  328. the common

  329. Old Testament

  330. Lord

  331. in capital

  332. letters,

  333. which is

  334. in Hebrew

  335. that's Yahweh,

  336. Israel's

  337. special

  338. name

  339. for God.

  340. Rather,

  341. Israel is

  342. literally saying,

  343. in the year

  344. King Uzziah

  345. died,

  346. I saw

  347. the King,

  348. the Lord.

  349. The scene

  350. is like

  351. heaven

  352. smashed

  353. down into

  354. the temple

  355. as Isaiah

  356. walked in

  357. one day.

  358. We have a

  359. couple of

  360. visitors who

  361. I've met

  362. this morning.

  363. Imagine you

  364. show up to

  365. church,

  366. you take a

  367. step inside

  368. and you

  369. see

  370. this.

  371. Isaiah

  372. sees the

  373. Lord,

  374. the King,

  375. on a throne,

  376. on a high

  377. platform,

  378. and His

  379. robe

  380. filled

  381. the entire

  382. floor.

  383. The temple

  384. was about

  385. the size

  386. of

  387. the

  388. floor

  389. space,

  390. the outer

  391. grassy knoll

  392. area of

  393. Chatswood

  394. Concourse.

  395. Or maybe

  396. picture a

  397. football field,

  398. a soccer

  399. field,

  400. football,

  401. soccer.

  402. But a

  403. soccer field,

  404. that's

  405. the size

  406. of the

  407. space

  408. and God's

  409. majestic

  410. robe,

  411. symbol of

  412. His

  413. power and

  414. impressiveness,

  415. fills that

  416. old space.

  417. Not only is it

  418. totally impractical,

  419. but it's just

  420. incredible.

  421. God,

  422. the Lord,

  423. the King,

  424. is beyond

  425. impressive.

  426. And Isaiah

  427. knew who He

  428. was immediately.

  429. King.

  430. And then Isaiah

  431. sees who

  432. attends this

  433. King,

  434. the

  435. Seraphim.

  436. Two beings

  437. stand huge

  438. above the

  439. King.

  440. King.

  441. They have

  442. six wings,

  443. covering

  444. themselves

  445. with four

  446. and flying

  447. with two,

  448. uniquely

  449. created for

  450. this throne

  451. room worship.

  452. Have a

  453. look

  454. in your

  455. Bible

  456. at how

  457. they're

  458. described.

  459. Have a look

  460. right now.

  461. can you

  462. picture that?

  463. Can you

  464. imagine

  465. what Isaiah

  466. is describing

  467. in only a

  468. few words?

  469. I googled

  470. it this

  471. week.

  472. I'm more

  473. confused than

  474. ever before

  475. about how

  476. these things

  477. look.

  478. And I can

  479. tell you

  480. that no

  481. artificial

  482. intelligence

  483. computer is

  484. going to be

  485. able to

  486. give me

  487. the picture

  488. that's any

  489. more impressive,

  490. not even

  491. getting close

  492. to the

  493. amazing

  494. sight that

  495. this would

  496. have been

  497. for Isaiah.

  498. But these

  499. two Seraphim,

  500. they call

  501. to one

  502. another.

  503. Their job

  504. is to speak

  505. about what

  506. is true.

  507. They don't

  508. qualify anything,

  509. there's no

  510. nuance.

  511. They're like

  512. a toddler

  513. who when

  514. a plane

  515. flies overhead

  516. just yells

  517. at the top

  518. of their

  519. voice,

  520. no matter

  521. what's

  522. happening,

  523. no matter

  524. what they

  525. should be

  526. doing,

  527. no matter

  528. if it's

  529. quiet,

  530. they just

  531. go,

  532. plane!

  533. Because

  534. there's a

  535. plane.

  536. Or if

  537. they're

  538. standing in

  539. the kitchen

  540. and you're

  541. trying to

  542. get them

  543. to listen

  544. and they

  545. point to

  546. the oven

  547. and they

  548. just yell

  549. hot!

  550. Just because

  551. that's

  552. true.

  553. These

  554. creatures

  555. simply

  556. exist

  557. to declare

  558. the obvious,

  559. the incredible

  560. majesty of

  561. the king

  562. that they

  563. serve.

  564. Here's what

  565. they say,

  566. verse 3,

  567. holy,

  568. holy,

  569. holy,

  570. holy,

  571. holy is

  572. the Lord

  573. of hosts.

  574. The whole

  575. earth is

  576. full of

  577. his glory.

  578. Their

  579. foundation

  580. shaking

  581. voices

  582. declare

  583. who God

  584. is.

  585. He's

  586. holy,

  587. but he's

  588. not just

  589. holy.

  590. holy.

  591. In

  592. Hebrew

  593. conversation,

  594. repeating

  595. a word

  596. twice

  597. emphasizes

  598. its quality.

  599. In

  600. 2 Kings

  601. 25,

  602. there are

  603. bowls

  604. described,

  605. and they're

  606. not just

  607. gold bowls,

  608. but they're

  609. gold gold.

  610. And in

  611. English,

  612. that would

  613. be purest

  614. gold,

  615. or finest

  616. gold.

  617. Jesus,

  618. in the

  619. Gospels,

  620. is said to

  621. have often

  622. begun his

  623. preaching with

  624. truly,

  625. truly,

  626. which means

  627. this is

  628. the truest

  629. truth.

  630. The

  631. equivalent

  632. would be

  633. if a

  634. married couple

  635. are getting

  636. married over

  637. here,

  638. and the

  639. ceremony's

  640. about to

  641. start,

  642. and the

  643. brides

  644. come down

  645. the aisle,

  646. and the

  647. blubbering

  648. mess of

  649. the groom

  650. is standing

  651. there,

  652. and he

  653. takes her

  654. hand and

  655. says,

  656. you are

  657. beautiful,

  658. beautiful.

  659. Or,

  660. like my

  661. daughter said

  662. to me a

  663. couple of

  664. weeks ago,

  665. this is not

  666. quite the

  667. same,

  668. but it's

  669. nearly there,

  670. in a world

  671. of fake

  672. news,

  673. what you

  674. have to

  675. do now

  676. is to

  677. say,

  678. this is

  679. a true

  680. fact.

  681. A fact

  682. is a

  683. fact,

  684. fact,

  685. but we

  686. don't say

  687. fact,

  688. fact,

  689. we now

  690. say true

  691. fact,

  692. or this

  693. is news,

  694. news.

  695. But the

  696. Israelites

  697. would never

  698. repeat a

  699. word three

  700. times,

  701. wouldn't make

  702. sense,

  703. unless

  704. something is

  705. so impressive,

  706. it doesn't

  707. happen anywhere

  708. else in the

  709. Bible,

  710. unless they're

  711. talking about

  712. God's

  713. holiness.

  714. holiness.

  715. He's not

  716. just holy,

  717. he's not

  718. just holiest,

  719. but holy,

  720. holy,

  721. holy.

  722. Holiness is

  723. the defining

  724. attribute of

  725. the king.

  726. This holiness

  727. is not just

  728. a goodness

  729. or a

  730. righteousness,

  731. though it

  732. is,

  733. but it also

  734. describes this

  735. king's

  736. transcendence,

  737. his all-ruling

  738. authority,

  739. his complete

  740. and incomparable

  741. majesty.

  742. He's totally

  743. set apart from

  744. anything else,

  745. in perfection,

  746. in power,

  747. and in wisdom.

  748. Nothing is

  749. holy compared

  750. to him.

  751. He's the

  752. three times

  753. holy king.

  754. He's so much

  755. more than

  756. our languages

  757. can capture.

  758. But this is

  759. already a big

  760. problem for

  761. Isaiah.

  762. Isaiah's

  763. fallen body

  764. is buckling.

  765. His senses

  766. are searing

  767. with God's

  768. holiness.

  769. The sound

  770. of the voices,

  771. the smell

  772. of the smoke,

  773. the ground

  774. quaking under

  775. his feet,

  776. the bending

  777. beams of

  778. the walls.

  779. And Isaiah's

  780. cry in response

  781. to the holiest

  782. holiness of

  783. God,

  784. the king,

  785. is,

  786. woe to

  787. me,

  788. I am

  789. ruined.

  790. And there's

  791. that word

  792. again.

  793. our melodies

  794. from our

  795. overture

  796. prepared us.

  797. But now

  798. that melody

  799. is ringing

  800. out in a

  801. scene that's

  802. not about

  803. the whole

  804. nation of

  805. Israel,

  806. it's just

  807. about one

  808. man.

  809. It's just

  810. about Isaiah.

  811. He realises

  812. that he is

  813. part of

  814. Israel's

  815. deserving

  816. of ruin.

  817. God has

  818. promised

  819. that what is

  820. happening for

  821. Israel,

  822. because they

  823. do not

  824. turn to

  825. him,

  826. and will

  827. not turn

  828. to him,

  829. he's a

  830. part of

  831. that

  832. uncleanness

  833. that leads

  834. to that

  835. horrible,

  836. horrible fate

  837. that is

  838. coming.

  839. And he

  840. literally says

  841. in Hebrew,

  842. I am

  843. disintegrating.

  844. All that is

  845. me is

  846. falling apart.

  847. His very

  848. identity,

  849. his strength

  850. and reputation,

  851. everything is

  852. undone

  853. before this

  854. holy God.

  855. And when he

  856. sees God's

  857. holiness,

  858. he immediately

  859. discovers how

  860. unsafe he is

  861. before the

  862. king.

  863. the smoke

  864. and the

  865. noise and

  866. the earthquake,

  867. they're not

  868. just epic.

  869. It's not

  870. just an

  871. impressive

  872. smoke and

  873. light show

  874. at the

  875. beginning of

  876. this

  877. production.

  878. It's a

  879. prequel to

  880. divine

  881. wrath.

  882. Isaiah

  883. was a

  884. preacher,

  885. he's a

  886. prophet,

  887. he spoke

  888. to kings,

  889. he was

  890. known.

  891. His lips

  892. were laced

  893. with the

  894. very words

  895. of God,

  896. but even

  897. Isaiah,

  898. strength and

  899. good life

  900. couldn't stand

  901. up to a

  902. comparison

  903. of the

  904. creator

  905. and judge.

  906. This is

  907. not the

  908. vision Isaiah

  909. might have

  910. wanted in

  911. the year

  912. Uzziah died,

  913. but it's

  914. what he

  915. needed.

  916. He needed

  917. to see

  918. that Israel,

  919. that Judah,

  920. needed a

  921. miracle of

  922. grace from

  923. the Lord,

  924. the king.

  925. If we

  926. were to

  927. see the

  928. holiness of

  929. God,

  930. the true

  931. holiness of

  932. God in

  933. that moment,

  934. we would

  935. react just

  936. like Isaiah.

  937. Know in a

  938. moment that

  939. our future is

  940. totally hopeless.

  941. We haven't

  942. measured up to

  943. God's holiness.

  944. holiness.

  945. In fact,

  946. we only have

  947. our sin

  948. revealed in

  949. his holy

  950. light.

  951. We too

  952. are completely

  953. exposed before

  954. the king,

  955. and we too

  956. need that same

  957. miracle of

  958. grace.

  959. So what

  960. happens next?

  961. Don't worry,

  962. there's no cliffhanger,

  963. but I am going to

  964. start by pointing out

  965. what does not

  966. happen next.

  967. I don't know

  968. whether it's

  969. Hollywood or

  970. just the stories

  971. that we like or

  972. the stories we

  973. read or the

  974. ways we hope

  975. things will end,

  976. but what does

  977. not happen is

  978. Isaiah's not

  979. secretly revealed as

  980. good enough to

  981. stand before God.

  982. There's no secret

  983. magic words that

  984. he went found on

  985. a scroll,

  986. on a mountain,

  987. in a cave,

  988. to be able to

  989. stand before God,

  990. and God doesn't

  991. see some kind

  992. of mysterious

  993. good in him,

  994. like in some

  995. Hollywood script,

  996. because God's

  997. holy,

  998. there's no

  999. optimistic way

  1000. out.

  1001. Isaiah's sin,

  1002. everyone's sin,

  1003. must be paid

  1004. for.

  1005. God being

  1006. completely

  1007. perfect and

  1008. righteous,

  1009. means that

  1010. wrath is the

  1011. only option,

  1012. and Isaiah

  1013. should die

  1014. right there.

  1015. But he

  1016. doesn't.

  1017. Have a look

  1018. with me at

  1019. verse 6.

  1020. Then one of

  1021. the seraphim

  1022. flew to me

  1023. with a live

  1024. coal in his

  1025. hand,

  1026. which he had

  1027. taken with

  1028. tongs from

  1029. the altar,

  1030. and with it

  1031. he touched

  1032. my mouth

  1033. and said,

  1034. see this

  1035. has touched

  1036. your lips,

  1037. your guilt

  1038. is taken

  1039. away,

  1040. and your

  1041. sin

  1042. atoned

  1043. for.

  1044. In Hebrew,

  1045. atoned for

  1046. literally means

  1047. here,

  1048. paid for.

  1049. God

  1050. has paid

  1051. for Isaiah's

  1052. sins

  1053. in this

  1054. moment.

  1055. God's

  1056. wrath.

  1057. How?

  1058. How?

  1059. If this

  1060. is not

  1061. done

  1062. fairly,

  1063. then God

  1064. is not

  1065. holy.

  1066. This is

  1067. really important.

  1068. How can

  1069. Isaiah's

  1070. sins be

  1071. paid for?

  1072. In the

  1073. Bible,

  1074. fire and

  1075. smoke and

  1076. flames are

  1077. all imagery

  1078. associated with

  1079. God's wrath.

  1080. a coal

  1081. is that

  1082. leftovers

  1083. after a

  1084. fire.

  1085. And this

  1086. coal is

  1087. the leftover

  1088. coal from

  1089. the fires

  1090. of wrath

  1091. that have

  1092. been spent

  1093. burning up

  1094. a sacrifice.

  1095. In the

  1096. temple,

  1097. the center

  1098. was the

  1099. altar,

  1100. where offerings

  1101. were brought

  1102. and burnt.

  1103. A sacrifice

  1104. died

  1105. in a

  1106. swap,

  1107. a swap

  1108. of judgment

  1109. because the

  1110. one who

  1111. offered up

  1112. that sacrifice

  1113. had their

  1114. death for

  1115. their sin

  1116. substituted,

  1117. swapped,

  1118. and paid

  1119. for by

  1120. that

  1121. sacrifice.

  1122. This

  1123. atonement

  1124. was at the

  1125. heart of

  1126. temple worship.

  1127. And for

  1128. the nation

  1129. of Israel,

  1130. it ritually

  1131. purified

  1132. someone.

  1133. It never

  1134. forgave them

  1135. and removed

  1136. their guilt

  1137. for good

  1138. though,

  1139. because more

  1140. sacrifices were

  1141. always needed

  1142. in season

  1143. or as sins

  1144. were committed.

  1145. But there's

  1146. no mention

  1147. here of

  1148. what died

  1149. on the

  1150. altar.

  1151. God

  1152. offered it.

  1153. Israel didn't

  1154. bring anything

  1155. for himself

  1156. to that

  1157. moment.

  1158. God

  1159. did.

  1160. A sacrifice

  1161. has been

  1162. burnt on

  1163. the altar

  1164. and the

  1165. fire of

  1166. wrath is

  1167. out.

  1168. And the

  1169. coals

  1170. that are

  1171. left

  1172. are used

  1173. to show

  1174. the power

  1175. of that

  1176. sacrifice.

  1177. The

  1178. leftover

  1179. coal

  1180. is this

  1181. singeing

  1182. symbol

  1183. on

  1184. Isaiah's

  1185. lips.

  1186. Isaiah's

  1187. sins are

  1188. atoned for

  1189. and paid

  1190. for by

  1191. whatever

  1192. or whoever

  1193. paid for

  1194. them

  1195. on the

  1196. altar.

  1197. God

  1198. is a

  1199. holy

  1200. king

  1201. and sin

  1202. has been

  1203. justly

  1204. removed

  1205. and he's

  1206. gracious

  1207. in this.

  1208. Isaiah

  1209. is changed

  1210. in that

  1211. moment

  1212. from

  1213. unholy

  1214. to

  1215. forgiven

  1216. and

  1217. holy.

  1218. God

  1219. provides

  1220. that

  1221. sacrifice

  1222. for

  1223. forgiveness

  1224. of

  1225. Isaiah's

  1226. sins

  1227. yet

  1228. Isaiah

  1229. did

  1230. nothing

  1231. here

  1232. but be

  1233. afraid.

  1234. He

  1235. sacrificed

  1236. nothing

  1237. and he

  1238. got this

  1239. purifying

  1240. forgiveness

  1241. and was

  1242. made

  1243. holy to

  1244. stand

  1245. before

  1246. a

  1247. holy

  1248. God

  1249. and this

  1250. is

  1251. great

  1252. news

  1253. for him

  1254. and it's

  1255. also great

  1256. news for

  1257. Israel

  1258. for all

  1259. who hear

  1260. it.

  1261. So God

  1262. asks

  1263. whom

  1264. shall I

  1265. send?

  1266. Who

  1267. will go

  1268. for us?

  1269. And Isaiah

  1270. is ready

  1271. and he

  1272. says

  1273. me.

  1274. His

  1275. identity

  1276. that had

  1277. disintegrated

  1278. before

  1279. God

  1280. has been

  1281. rebuilt

  1282. on this

  1283. new

  1284. solid rock

  1285. this

  1286. foundation

  1287. of grace

  1288. from

  1289. the

  1290. Lord

  1291. the

  1292. King

  1293. and Isaiah's

  1294. obedience

  1295. is

  1296. joyful

  1297. he's

  1298. willing

  1299. to tell

  1300. everyone

  1301. he meets

  1302. about what

  1303. this

  1304. King

  1305. is

  1306. like

  1307. but

  1308. will

  1309. God's

  1310. people

  1311. hear

  1312. how

  1313. will

  1314. God's

  1315. people

  1316. respond

  1317. have a

  1318. look at

  1319. verse 9

  1320. be

  1321. ever

  1322. hearing

  1323. but never

  1324. understanding

  1325. be

  1326. ever

  1327. seeing

  1328. but never

  1329. perceiving

  1330. make

  1331. the heart

  1332. of this

  1333. people

  1334. calloused

  1335. make

  1336. their ears

  1337. dull

  1338. and close

  1339. their eyes

  1340. otherwise

  1341. they may

  1342. see with

  1343. their eyes

  1344. and hear

  1345. what

  1346. they

  1347. is

  1348. and

  1349. understand

  1350. with

  1351. their

  1352. hearts

  1353. and turn

  1354. and be

  1355. healed

  1356. oh no

  1357. how could

  1358. this

  1359. be

  1360. the music's

  1361. changed

  1362. again

  1363. we're back

  1364. to that

  1365. horrifying

  1366. melody

  1367. from the

  1368. overture

  1369. verse 11

  1370. then I

  1371. said

  1372. for how

  1373. long

  1374. Lord

  1375. has he

  1376. answered

  1377. till the

  1378. cities

  1379. line

  1380. ruined

  1381. without

  1382. inhabitant

  1383. until the

  1384. houses are

  1385. left

  1386. deserted

  1387. and the

  1388. fields

  1389. ruined

  1390. and ravaged

  1391. until the

  1392. Lord has

  1393. sent everyone

  1394. far away

  1395. and the

  1396. land is

  1397. utterly

  1398. forsaken

  1399. no

  1400. Lord

  1401. stop

  1402. the song

  1403. I know

  1404. this melody

  1405. change

  1406. the channel

  1407. is there

  1408. no hope

  1409. at all

  1410. verse 13

  1411. second half

  1412. of verse 13

  1413. but as the

  1414. terebinth and

  1415. oak leave

  1416. stumps when

  1417. they're cut

  1418. down

  1419. so the

  1420. holy seed

  1421. will be

  1422. the stump

  1423. in the

  1424. land

  1425. at the

  1426. end of

  1427. that verse

  1428. all

  1429. three

  1430. of our

  1431. melodies

  1432. are playing

  1433. at once

  1434. it's a

  1435. song of

  1436. sorrow

  1437. and grace

  1438. and hope

  1439. of wrath

  1440. and justice

  1441. and love

  1442. all at once

  1443. there is

  1444. hope

  1445. from the

  1446. roots left

  1447. in the

  1448. ground

  1449. the holy

  1450. seed

  1451. is gonna

  1452. grow

  1453. and there's

  1454. that word

  1455. again

  1456. holy

  1457. only God

  1458. is holy

  1459. unless he

  1460. graciously

  1461. makes

  1462. someone

  1463. holy

  1464. by forgiving

  1465. their sin

  1466. so to do

  1467. this

  1468. God is

  1469. gonna plant

  1470. a holy

  1471. thing

  1472. in the

  1473. soils

  1474. of Israel

  1475. holy

  1476. seed

  1477. and that

  1478. is the

  1479. hope

  1480. Isaiah

  1481. has in

  1482. this

  1483. moment

  1484. even

  1485. while no

  1486. one's

  1487. gonna

  1488. listen

  1489. to him

  1490. all

  1491. is not

  1492. lost

  1493. and we

  1494. know

  1495. who the

  1496. holy

  1497. seed

  1498. is

  1499. it is

  1500. Jesus

  1501. in God's

  1502. son we

  1503. saw

  1504. this

  1505. holy

  1506. seed

  1507. die

  1508. as buried

  1509. in the

  1510. ground

  1511. so that it

  1512. could grow

  1513. life

  1514. the holy

  1515. seed

  1516. is

  1517. the

  1518. sacrifice

  1519. Isaiah's

  1520. mystery

  1521. on the

  1522. altar

  1523. is

  1524. solved

  1525. Jesus

  1526. was

  1527. sacrificed

  1528. for the

  1529. sin of

  1530. all who

  1531. would

  1532. believe

  1533. in him

  1534. not on

  1535. the temple

  1536. altar

  1537. but on

  1538. a timber

  1539. beam

  1540. on a

  1541. hill

  1542. where the

  1543. wrath of

  1544. God was

  1545. endured

  1546. and quenched

  1547. God's

  1548. holiness

  1549. held

  1550. true

  1551. and just

  1552. as was

  1553. done

  1554. on the

  1555. altar

  1556. of the

  1557. cross

  1558. see that's

  1559. how this

  1560. bridge

  1561. that Isaiah

  1562. is

  1563. that's how

  1564. it works

  1565. we see from

  1566. our time

  1567. looking back

  1568. what Isaiah

  1569. and what Israel

  1570. could not yet

  1571. we know

  1572. who that

  1573. sacrifice

  1574. on the

  1575. altar

  1576. that in

  1577. this image

  1578. who he

  1579. was

  1580. it was

  1581. Jesus

  1582. but unlike

  1583. Isaiah

  1584. we see

  1585. his

  1586. holy

  1587. life

  1588. recorded

  1589. in the

  1590. gospels

  1591. we see

  1592. our

  1593. unholy

  1594. ending

  1595. enacted

  1596. at the

  1597. cross

  1598. lived out

  1599. and died

  1600. for us

  1601. what a

  1602. saviour

  1603. in the

  1604. year

  1605. King

  1606. Isaiah

  1607. died

  1608. God

  1609. revealed

  1610. himself

  1611. as a

  1612. holy

  1613. and

  1614. gracious

  1615. king

  1616. after

  1617. COVID

  1618. in

  1619. 2023

  1620. this

  1621. Easter

  1622. we

  1623. remembered

  1624. a man

  1625. who was

  1626. crucified

  1627. on a

  1628. hill

  1629. outside

  1630. Jerusalem

  1631. and

  1632. written

  1633. on his

  1634. cross

  1635. in a

  1636. sign

  1637. for all

  1638. to see

  1639. were the

  1640. words

  1641. this

  1642. is

  1643. Jesus

  1644. the

  1645. King

  1646. of the

  1647. Jews

  1648. the

  1649. King

  1650. was

  1651. crucified

  1652. the

  1653. King

  1654. on the

  1655. throne

  1656. stepped

  1657. down

  1658. and took

  1659. off

  1660. his robe

  1661. of glory

  1662. he made

  1663. himself

  1664. nothing

  1665. he was

  1666. born

  1667. as a

  1668. man

  1669. he lived

  1670. a holy

  1671. life

  1672. he was

  1673. crowned

  1674. not with a

  1675. crown

  1676. of gold

  1677. but of

  1678. thorns

  1679. he didn't

  1680. he didn't wear

  1681. a robe

  1682. he was

  1683. stripped

  1684. naked

  1685. and he

  1686. wore

  1687. our

  1688. wrath

  1689. and died

  1690. in shame

  1691. that

  1692. is how

  1693. far

  1694. this

  1695. holy

  1696. king

  1697. will go

  1698. to make

  1699. unholy

  1700. people

  1701. holy

  1702. the

  1703. king

  1704. sacrifices

  1705. himself

  1706. and that's

  1707. not even

  1708. the end

  1709. because he

  1710. is not

  1711. dead

  1712. he is

  1713. risen

  1714. and he

  1715. reigns

  1716. in glory

  1717. the

  1718. king

  1719. is

  1720. gracious

  1721. so much

  1722. so that

  1723. he made

  1724. an offering

  1725. for Isaiah's

  1726. sin

  1727. by offering

  1728. himself

  1729. as the

  1730. sacrifice

  1731. and we

  1732. now know

  1733. him as

  1734. the king

  1735. Jesus

  1736. of Nazareth

  1737. king

  1738. of the

  1739. Jews

  1740. once

  1741. you

  1742. see

  1743. Jesus

  1744. you'll

  1745. only want

  1746. to keep

  1747. seeing

  1748. this king

  1749. so I

  1750. want to

  1751. encourage you

  1752. as we

  1753. step through

  1754. this season

  1755. in Isaiah

  1756. challenge

  1757. yourself

  1758. to read

  1759. this book

  1760. to listen

  1761. to this

  1762. symphony

  1763. as you

  1764. read

  1765. a chapter

  1766. a day

  1767. four or

  1768. more times

  1769. a week

  1770. glimpse

  1771. God's

  1772. glory and

  1773. grace

  1774. here in

  1775. Isaiah

  1776. open up

  1777. the gospels

  1778. in these

  1779. school holidays

  1780. and see

  1781. the king

  1782. king

  1783. Jesus

  1784. over and

  1785. over

  1786. helping you

  1787. see that

  1788. he is

  1789. holy and

  1790. gracious

  1791. to you

  1792. and to

  1793. all people

  1794. in the

  1795. words of

  1796. a book

  1797. you have

  1798. the sight

  1799. that you

  1800. need to

  1801. see now

  1802. after

  1803. covid

  1804. after

  1805. whatever

  1806. the season

  1807. seeing the

  1808. king in

  1809. the word

  1810. is who

  1811. you need

  1812. and how

  1813. you grow

  1814. and thrive

  1815. wherever you

  1816. are in your

  1817. time right

  1818. now

  1819. and these

  1820. are the

  1821. words the

  1822. world need

  1823. to hear

  1824. for those

  1825. who follow

  1826. this king

  1827. if you

  1828. follow Jesus

  1829. will you

  1830. say with

  1831. Isaiah

  1832. here am

  1833. I

  1834. send me

  1835. Jesus

  1836. the king

  1837. just like

  1838. in Isaiah

  1839. says in

  1840. Matthew 28

  1841. all authority

  1842. in heaven

  1843. and on earth

  1844. has been

  1845. given to

  1846. me

  1847. therefore

  1848. go and

  1849. make

  1850. disciples

  1851. of all

  1852. nations

  1853. the holy

  1854. king has

  1855. placed

  1856. into our

  1857. holy made

  1858. hands

  1859. a holy

  1860. message of

  1861. repentance

  1862. and forgiveness

  1863. and grace

  1864. to all

  1865. peoples

  1866. of all

  1867. nations

  1868. so if

  1869. you know

  1870. Jesus

  1871. will you

  1872. fearlessly

  1873. trust

  1874. this holy

  1875. king

  1876. to share

  1877. the message

  1878. of his

  1879. grace

  1880. with someone

  1881. who does

  1882. not

  1883. know him

  1884. he does

  1885. not see

  1886. him

  1887. and maybe

  1888. is even

  1889. hostile

  1890. to him

  1891. and if

  1892. you don't

  1893. know

  1894. Jesus

  1895. yet

  1896. and if

  1897. you want

  1898. to receive

  1899. this gift

  1900. of grace

  1901. in Jesus

  1902. Christ

  1903. come to

  1904. the altar

  1905. come to

  1906. the cross

  1907. respond

  1908. even now

  1909. as we

  1910. sing

  1911. come speak

  1912. to me

  1913. come speak

  1914. to Carmen

  1915. or Rachel

  1916. and why

  1917. not even

  1918. start praying

  1919. right now

  1920. that God

  1921. would help

  1922. you see

  1923. what Isaiah

  1924. saw

  1925. and with

  1926. Isaiah

  1927. receive with

  1928. joy

  1929. the gift

  1930. of grace

  1931. to stand

  1932. forgiven

  1933. before your

  1934. king

  1935. before God

  1936. because of the

  1937. sacrifice

  1938. of Jesus

  1939. Christ

  1940. let's pray

  1941. God

  1942. we all

  1943. need to

  1944. see

  1945. that you

  1946. are the

  1947. king

  1948. we cannot

  1949. stand before

  1950. you

  1951. but because

  1952. of Jesus

  1953. we can

  1954. receive

  1955. forgiveness

  1956. he is

  1957. our

  1958. sacrifice

  1959. he pays

  1960. for sins

  1961. so we

  1962. can stand

  1963. in your

  1964. presence

  1965. we look

  1966. forward to

  1967. the day

  1968. when people

  1969. from all

  1970. nations

  1971. will join

  1972. with Isaiah

  1973. in worship

  1974. and we

  1975. claim

  1976. that

  1977. forgiveness

  1978. today

  1979. we commit

  1980. ourselves

  1981. to the

  1982. king

  1983. king

  1984. Jesus

  1985. and until

  1986. then and for

  1987. all eternity

  1988. we are your

  1989. people so

  1990. send us

  1991. to tell all

  1992. nations of

  1993. your holiness

  1994. and grace

  1995. amen
