  1. Well, good morning, and if you are just joining us, we are, as we have said, partway through

  2. the book of Isaiah, which we're working through this term.

  3. There is something quite majestic about the scope of this book.

  4. It has a grandeur in its scope.

  5. The second verse of Isaiah calls the heavens and the earth to bear witness, and in the

  6. very last paragraph, we read of a new heaven and a new earth.

  7. And so the journey of the book of Isaiah is from creation to new creation, such is the

  8. scope of it.

  9. It is cosmic, and cosmic renewal in a grand scale is what this book is about.

  10. In God's wisdom and in his providence, that cosmic renewal is being worked out through

  11. this little nation of Judah, being played out through the pages of history.

  12. In this little nation.

  13. And yet, as we open the book of Isaiah, it is quite dark days for Judah.

  14. You see, Judah is sitting, waiting, cowering in the corner like a little puppy, waiting

  15. for the mighty Assyrian army just on the other side of its northern borders to take up its

  16. arms and walk in and annex Judah, as it has done Israel previously.

  17. And so the question for Judah is, where is your security?

  18. What is it that you are hoping for?

  19. Where is it you look for your hope?

  20. If you were here last week, the main idea was to turn to God's king for hope.

  21. In repentance and faith, turn to God's king.

  22. Today, it's linked to that idea, but it's turn away from other things as well, is the

  23. point of today's message.

  24. And so if you've got the St. Paul's app, three points.

  25. God and the nations.

  26. God and Judah.

  27. And God and us.

  28. So let's kick off, first of all, God and the nations.

  29. Isaiah 1 to 12, which is where we finish last week, is the first main section of this prophecy.

  30. And it began with a focus on Judah, and it ends with a focus on the nations.

  31. And as we pick up the second major section of this book, which is chapters 13 to 27, we

    Isaiah 13 chapter mention

  32. begin with a focus on the nations, and we end with a focus on Judah.

  33. As a relatively small nation, it was constantly threatened by great powers.

  34. And Judah, therefore, was constantly tempted to look to political and military alliances in

  35. order to save her.

  36. And so our concern today is really chapters 13 to 23, or really 13 to 27.

  37. And if you've got a Bible in front of you and you flick through the pages, you'll see the

  38. chapter headings or the section headings, and those section headings will tell you exactly

  39. what these chapters are all about.

  40. Now, they are 10 oracles, prophecies against the nations that are surrounding Judah.

  41. They are structured into two groups of five oracles, and each of the two groups of five begin

  42. with Babylon, the nation of Babylon.

  43. Now, Babylon historically is known as one of the seven wonders of the world.

  44. It's also the sacred capital and power base of the great king Nebuchadnezzar, who you can

  45. read about in the Old Testament book of Daniel.

  46. And the reason Babylon comes first in both sections of five oracles is that in Bible thinking,

  47. Babylon is not just a real place, but it also is a symbol of collective human defiance and

  48. rebellion against God.

  49. Babylon was historically built on the site of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11.

  50. And the Tower of Babel being the monument to human desire to push God out of life and to make

  51. a name for ourselves.

  52. It's the ultimate symbol, Tower of Babel, Genesis 11, the ultimate symbol of human rebellion against

  53. God.

  54. And it's a symbolism that's carried right through into the New Testament.

  55. 1 Peter 5, verse 13, the apostle Peter refers to the Roman Empire as Babylon.

    1 Peter 5:13

  56. And likewise, the apostle John announces the ultimate downfall of prideful world powers at the end of time in Revelation 18,

  57. using the word Isaiah 21, fallen.

  58. Fallen is Babylon.

  59. Babylon.

  60. Babylon.

  61. And so as we consider the grand scope of Isaiah, we also note that Babylon rises at the beginning of the Bible and it falls at the end of the Bible.

  62. Babylon represents all that stands against God.

  63. All that is rebellious against God.

  64. All that is an enemy of God.

  65. All that is about human pride and achievement without God.

  66. And even in chapter 13, which is our focus today, we are to understand that what is prophesied here about Babylon is more than just the nation.

  67. In verse 11, we read God saying, I will punish the world for its evil.

  68. What that means is, as we look at chapter 13, and please have your Bibles open because you really need to have your Bibles open.

  69. I'll even pause for you to let you get it.

  70. Excellent.

  71. Going for apps, Bibles.

  72. If you need a Bible, put your hand up or take one from the person next to you.

  73. What this means is, as we read about Babylon here in chapter 13, we are reading about the great cities of our own day.

  74. What does God say to London, Tokyo, New York, Beijing, Dubai, Sydney?

  75. You could extend that and ask, what does God say to the great multinational companies of our day?

  76. BHP and Apple and Amazon and Google and Meta.

  77. And what's more, what does God say about the great ideologies and opinion formers and culture shapers of our day of liberal democracy and Islam and secularism?

  78. What does God say to everything that we have built for ourselves?

  79. Verse 6 of chapter 13.

  80. Wail for the day of the Lord is near.

  81. It will come like destruction from the Almighty.

  82. And then down into verse 9.

  83. The day of the Lord is coming, a cruel day with wrath and fierce anger to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it.

  84. Both of those verses mention the day of the Lord.

  85. It represents both a particular time in history and something far deeper and greater as well.

  86. It's first a reference to the year 539 BC when the Babylonian Empire finally fell.

  87. It finally fell to the Medi-Persian Empire under Cyrus.

  88. But it also refers to a day that is yet to come when the Lord Jesus will return.

  89. We see this at the end of the Bible.

  90. And do what he did here to Babylon to bring judgment upon the pride and the arrogance of all who dare to oppose him.

  91. And most of Isaiah 13, which was just read out to us, is a vivid description of what that day will be like.

  92. What is it about our society that makes God in?

  93. Well, in one verse, we are given a telling insight into the mind of the judge of all people.

  94. Verse 11.

  95. I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins.

  96. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.

  97. In its essence, evil is the opposite of everything that's good.

  98. Evil is not a category that is reserved for some people, but not others.

  99. It's a category that's reserved for all people, not just the worst of people.

  100. It's described in verse 11 as arrogance, pride, haughty, as sin.

  101. As the German theologian Martin Luther wrote, the human heart is curved in on itself.

  102. Definition of pride.

  103. Curved in on itself.

  104. Looks to itself.

  105. That's the essence of the problem.

  106. We put ourselves where only God should be.

  107. Now, I'll be frank with you.

  108. I do not tend to think of my neighbours or even of myself as evil.

  109. And yet, I have done things.

  110. I have said things and thought things that have caused harm to others.

  111. And I still do.

  112. I've acted.

  113. I do act for my own advantage at the expense of others.

  114. I did it yesterday.

  115. There was a long line of traffic.

  116. I rammed up on the inside and pushed in.

  117. The guy behind me didn't like it.

  118. But my car was bigger than his.

  119. In its essence, evil is the opposite of everything good.

  120. It is my heart curved in and of itself.

  121. Think about myself first.

  122. I departed from the good ways of the God who made me.

  123. And God says humanity must be held accountable for it and he will punish the wicked for their sins.

  124. God will bring low the pride, the proud.

  125. He will bring low the pride, the presumption of those who exalt themselves.

  126. And so I ask you, have you ever believed your own publicity?

  127. Have you ever refused to let God be God?

  128. Have you ever thought that his word is mistaken, misguided, wrong?

  129. Have you ever justified your behaviour?

  130. Even used the Bible to justify your behaviour?

  131. Have you ever justified your behaviour?

  132. Have you ever justified your behaviour?

  133. And so in verse 2, he will muster a mighty army through whom he will punish the proud.

  134. Raise a banner on a bare hilltop.

  135. Shout to them, beckon to them to enter the gates of the nobles.

  136. I have commanded those I prepared for battle.

  137. I have summoned my warriors to carry out my wrath.

  138. Those who rejoice in my triumph.

  139. Listen, a noise on the mountains like that of a great multitude.

  140. Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms.

  141. Like nations massing together, the Lord Almighty is mustering an army for war.

  142. They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens.

  143. The Lord and the weapons of his wrath to destroy the whole country.

  144. That's God speaking to Babylon.

  145. And the immediate result of God's judgment here is agonising helplessness, as we've all said in verse 6.

  146. It's sobering.

  147. Human greatness will come to nothing.

  148. Weapons, it says he, will fall from limp fingers.

  149. Nerves will flee from every heart.

  150. And it's in this moment that the bankruptcy of human pride is laid bare.

  151. And the impotence of all sources of security, hope and trust that we have built for ourselves will be gone.

  152. The flaming faces of verse 8 is shame.

  153. The shame of realising that my rejection of God has just been foolish.

  154. We will all be in the same boat, but we'll all sing it upon ourselves.

  155. The shame of rejecting God.

  156. The foolishness of it.

  157. And verses 9 to 18 is a devastating description of God's judgment.

  158. It is gut-wrenching.

  159. And so this should cause us to ask,

  160. what is it that we are trusting in to defend ourselves against Almighty God?

  161. Nothing will stand.

  162. Verse 19 is really telling Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms,

  163. the pride and glory of the Babylonians,

  164. will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.

  165. You see, this is a message to Judah.

  166. Babylon's not hearing this.

  167. This is a message to Judah.

  168. And God's saying here, have a look at Babylon, Judah.

  169. Look at it.

  170. The jewel of the kingdoms.

  171. And all Judah could see in that moment was the jewel of the kingdoms.

  172. This great city, the glory and the splendour of Babylon.

  173. The first city in human history to get beyond 200,000 inhabitants.

  174. The glorious city that had spectacularly throughout its history defied God and succeeded.

  175. God says it will fall.

  176. Judah, it will fall.

  177. Look to that hope and it will fall.

  178. And it did.

  179. It fell.

  180. It fell.

  181. And as we're told, it will never be rebuilt again.

  182. In 1983, Saddam Hussein started to rebuild Babylon to again be a symbol of greatness in the world.

  183. He portrayed himself as the new Nebuchadnezzar, the new king of the Babylonian empire.

  184. He had his name inscribed on the bricks as Nebi before him did in the original Babylon.

  185. He had large portraits of himself put alongside King Nebuchadnezzar at the entrance of the rebuilt Babylon.

  186. And signs throughout the city declared, this was built by Saddam Hussein, son of Nebuchadnezzar, king of kings, to glorify Iraq.

  187. He ended up in a hole in the ground, running for his life.

  188. Defiant to the end, he is dead and God, gone.

  189. And the city that he was building for himself is still a ruins in the desert that you can visit today.

  190. And so here the prophecy of Isaiah, nearly 3,000 years before that,

  191. she will never be inhabited or lived in through all generations.

  192. There no nomads will pitch their tents.

  193. There no shepherds will rest their flocks.

  194. But desert creatures will lie there.

  195. Jackals will fill her houses.

  196. There the owls will dwell.

  197. And there the wild goats will leap about.

  198. Hyenas will inhabit her strongholds.

  199. Jackals, her luxurious palaces.

  200. Her time is at hand and her days will not be prolonged.

  201. You see, the message for Judah here as it gazes at great Babylon is very simple.

  202. Empires will come and go.

  203. Societies will rise and they will fall.

  204. Great companies and institutions will burst onto the scene and disappear.

  205. The rulers and kings will come and go.

  206. And you will live.

  207. And you will die.

  208. I am so grateful to God for his timely providence of preaching today on Isaiah 13 to 23

  209. and watching the coronation of King Charles III yesterday.

  210. He's here and one day he will go.

  211. The British Empire has risen and it will fall.

  212. The Church of England has risen and it, with all its pomp and ceremony yesterday,

  213. it too, unless it repents, will fall.

  214. The grand scope of God's purposes from creation to new creation will continue.

  215. Jesus sits on his throne alone.

  216. From everlasting to everlasting.

  217. So, why is this for Judah?

  218. Why is Judah hearing this?

  219. Why is God revealing this to Isaiah for his people?

  220. Now, the first thing to say is that what Isaiah is not doing in these chapters,

  221. Isaiah is not a self-righteous moraliser standing on the edges of society,

  222. waving his finger at society going,

  223. tut, tut, tut, tut, tut, tut.

  224. You naughty people.

  225. As the Church has done in society.

  226. That's not what's happening here.

  227. Neither is Isaiah simply a social reformer.

  228. All these chapters consist of brutal oracles against the different nations of the world

  229. for their pride and their rebellion.

  230. And Isaiah never went on a preaching tour to those nations.

  231. They never heard these oracles.

  232. Isaiah isn't taking the platform of the United Nations,

  233. decrying the behaviour of the foreign powers.

  234. These oracles are recorded for the people of God.

  235. Designed to build the faith of the people of God

  236. and to deal with their idolatry.

  237. It's about kicking idols and building faith.

  238. That's what these chapters are about.

  239. The primary purpose is to teach God's people about God,

  240. about his absolute control over every nation of the world,

  241. about the perfection of his justice.

  242. They're designed for God's people to trust him,

  243. to lean on him,

  244. to cling to his word.

  245. You see, the main issue in the opening chapters of Isaiah

  246. is that Judah didn't trust in God.

  247. They looked to other things for their security.

  248. And what is amazing about that

  249. is that we read in the early chapters

  250. that they had their religion.

  251. They were doing their sacrifices.

  252. They were going to church.

  253. They were doing their community groups.

  254. They were reading their Bibles.

  255. So to speak.

  256. But God was not functionally the center of their life.

  257. They were looking to other nations

  258. as their security in the end.

  259. As a nation, Judah desired to defend her borders

  260. against a foreign aggressor,

  261. which is not a bad thing.

  262. It's a good thing.

  263. The problem is that Judah, in that moment,

  264. decided to go with human wisdom

  265. and to trust in other nations for that security,

  266. rather than the God who had rescued them

  267. from slavery in Egypt,

  268. who provided for them

  269. and had for well over 2,000 years of their history

  270. protected them.

  271. And so God is demonstrating to Judah

  272. in these oracles,

  273. the naivety

  274. and the futility

  275. of trusting in human resources

  276. and power and wisdom.

  277. You want to go to Babylon, Judah?

  278. It will soon be like Sodom and Gomorrah.

  279. What about the Philistines?

  280. What about Cush?

  281. What about Egypt?

  282. What about Moab?

  283. No.

  284. No.

  285. No.

  286. And so what is happening in these chapters

  287. is that God takes his people on a journey

  288. around the compass,

  289. wherever Judah looked.

  290. She is seeing nations whose glory is fleeting

  291. and whose fate is sealed.

  292. And there is nowhere

  293. that she can look for her security

  294. but the Lord,

  295. the Lord who is the Lord of all the earth,

  296. the ruler of nations,

  297. the judge of humanity.

  298. In chapter 17,

  299. Judah is told to look to Damascus.

  300. Look at Damascus.

  301. This is their brothers to the north,

  302. the ten tribes of Israel to the north.

  303. Assyria destroyed those ten tribes of the north,

  304. sorry, destroyed Damascus in 732 BC.

  305. Ten years later,

  306. it completely obliterated the nation.

  307. Look to Damascus.

  308. What was their problem?

  309. What did they do?

  310. They foolishly aligned themselves with Syria

  311. in order to defeat the Assyrians.

  312. And they lost.

  313. But the real reason for her downfall

  314. was her long, long history of idolatry.

  315. Long history of idolatry

  316. which eroded her single-minded commitment

  317. to Yahweh,

  318. to their God,

  319. and opened her up to the politics of convenience

  320. and worldly wisdom

  321. instead of trusting their God.

  322. And so,

  323. in chapter 17,

  324. verses 7 and 8,

  325. we have the pivotal passage of repentance.

  326. In that day,

  327. people will look to their maker

  328. and turn their eyes

  329. to the Holy One of Israel.

  330. They will not look to the altars,

  331. the work of their hands.

  332. In other words,

  333. don't just look to God

  334. for your hope,

  335. but turn away

  336. from your false gods

  337. at the same time.

  338. what we see here

  339. is that God

  340. has declared war

  341. on idolatry.

  342. It's in the New Testament

  343. as well.

  344. And it's particularly

  345. in the New Testament

  346. that we see

  347. how God has declared war

  348. on our idolatry.

  349. we are to look to our maker

  350. who on Mount Zion

  351. took on the role

  352. of Babylon for us.

  353. He took on our rebellion

  354. and our sin

  355. and became

  356. the consummate enemy

  357. of God.

  358. The eternal

  359. and glorious,

  360. the eternal

  361. and glorious

  362. maker

  363. and judge

  364. of humanity

  365. experienced

  366. demise

  367. for us.

  368. He experienced

  369. shame

  370. for sin,

  371. shame

  372. for rebellion,

  373. shame

  374. for our idolatry.

  375. He experienced

  376. death.

  377. And yet

  378. his resurrection

  379. was a triumphant

  380. victory

  381. over all

  382. the corrupt

  383. political processes

  384. and the false

  385. allegiances

  386. that resulted

  387. in his undeserved

  388. death.

  389. The Jewish

  390. nationalism,

  391. the betrayal

  392. of Judas

  393. for 30 pieces

  394. of silver,

  395. the cruelty

  396. of the Roman

  397. cross

  398. were all

  399. expressions

  400. of the Babylonian

  401. principle

  402. in this world.

  403. And on

  404. Mount Zion

  405. as the nations

  406. looked on

  407. our maker

  408. cried out

  409. his last breath

  410. it

  411. is

  412. finished.

  413. And with

  414. those words

  415. God's

  416. enemies

  417. can now

  418. be his people

  419. and find

  420. refuge in him

  421. not fear

  422. refuge

  423. refuge.

  424. And so

  425. God is

  426. inviting us

  427. here

  428. to

  429. look

  430. across

  431. history

  432. see

  433. how

  434. empires

  435. have

  436. fallen

  437. and

  438. realize

  439. that

  440. they

  441. are

  442. all

  443. pointers

  444. to

  445. a

  446. great

  447. and

  448. even

  449. greater

  450. and

  451. more

  452. terrible

  453. day

  454. of

  455. judgment

  456. when

  457. we

  458. will

  459. give

  460. an

  461. account

  462. before

  463. God.

  464. That's

  465. what he's

  466. doing

  467. here

  468. with

  469. Judah

  470. and

  471. looking

  472. at

  473. Babylon

  474. and

  475. these

  476. nations.

  477. We

  478. are

  479. invited

  480. to

  481. read

  482. the

  483. writing

  484. that's

  485. on

  486. the

  487. wall

  488. just

  489. as

  490. King

  491. Belshazzar

  492. did

  493. as he

  494. partied

  495. carefree

  496. on the

  497. very night

  498. the

  499. Babylonian

  500. empire

  501. fell.

  502. It

  503. was

  504. overrun

  505. and

  506. the

  507. writing

  508. was

  509. on

  510. the

  511. wall

  512. and

  513. we're

  514. meant

  515. to

  516. read

  517. the

  518. writing

  519. that's

  520. on

  521. the

  522. wall

  523. as

  524. he

  525. did

  526. on

  527. that

  528. night.

  529. It's

  530. written

  531. right

  532. across

  533. human

  534. history

  535. God

  536. has

  537. numbered

  538. our

  539. days

  540. we

  541. have

  542. been

  543. weighed

  544. on

  545. the

  546. scales

  547. and

  548. found

  549. wanting.

  550. How

  551. are we

  552. able to

  553. stand

  554. against

  555. the

  556. almighty?

  557. The

  558. only answer

  559. is captured

  560. in the

  561. Christian

  562. song

  563. lyrics

  564. dressed

  565. in his

  566. righteousness

  567. alone

  568. faultless

  569. I

  570. stand

  571. before

  572. the

  573. throne

  574. on

  575. Christ

  576. the

  577. solid

  578. rock

  579. I

  580. stand

  581. all

  582. other

  583. ground

  584. is

  585. sinking

  586. sand.

  587. That's

  588. the message

  589. for

  590. Judah.

  591. That's

  592. the message

  593. for

  594. Judah.

  595. So let's

  596. just close

  597. off and have

  598. a look at

  599. us for a

  600. moment.

  601. this whole

  602. chunk of

  603. Isaiah

  604. has the

  605. aim of

  606. demolishing

  607. any

  608. confidence

  609. that we

  610. might have

  611. in our

  612. own

  613. resources

  614. and human

  615. wisdom

  616. and human

  617. methods

  618. and

  619. ingenuity.

  620. It's

  621. designed

  622. to crush

  623. our

  624. idols

  625. and to

  626. build

  627. faith.

  628. Not

  629. just to

  630. turn to

  631. God

  632. in

  633. faith

  634. but it's

  635. designed

  636. to crush

  637. our

  638. idols

  639. our

  640. other

  641. alternative

  642. gods

  643. that we

  644. have

  645. built

  646. our

  647. lives

  648. on.

  649. Now

  650. idolatry

  651. looks a

  652. little bit

  653. different

  654. for us

  655. than it

  656. did for

  657. Judah.

  658. It might

  659. have

  660. similar

  661. roots

  662. but

  663. for

  664. instance

  665. we

  666. might

  667. be

  668. looking

  669. to

  670. other

  671. nations

  672. for

  673. our

  674. ultimate

  675. security

  676. rather

  677. than

  678. God.

  679. That's

  680. possible.

  681. But

  682. there's a

  683. word in

  684. the New

  685. Testament

  686. that

  687. means

  688. inordinate

  689. desires

  690. and it's

  691. strongly linked

  692. to the

  693. idea of

  694. Old

  695. Testament

  696. idolatry.

  697. Every

  698. single sin

  699. that we

  700. commit,

  701. every

  702. thought,

  703. every

  704. action

  705. that we

  706. have

  707. that's

  708. a sin

  709. has a

  710. deeper

  711. source

  712. to that

  713. action.

  714. There's a

  715. sin

  716. that's

  717. beneath

  718. the

  719. sin

  720. and the

  721. sin

  722. that's

  723. beneath

  724. the

  725. sin

  726. is that

  727. each

  728. one of

  729. us

  730. has

  731. idols

  732. that

  733. we

  734. trust

  735. in

  736. rather

  737. than

  738. Jesus

  739. Christ

  740. for

  741. our

  742. outstanding

  743. with

  744. God

  745. and

  746. others.

  747. Romans

  748. 1 tells

  749. us

  750. that we

  751. create

  752. idols

  753. because

  754. we

  755. want to

  756. have

  757. control

  758. over

  759. our

  760. lives.

  761. We

  762. don't

  763. want to

  764. trust

  765. God.

  766. We

  767. want to

  768. control

  769. our

  770. lives

  771. ourselves.

  772. Galatians

  773. 4 tells

  774. us

  775. idolatry

  776. is linked

  777. to our

  778. self

  779. salvation.

  780. 1

  781. John

  782. 5 tells

  783. us

  784. the

  785. idolatry

  786. is taking

  787. good

  788. things

  789. and

  790. making

  791. them

  792. ultimate

  793. things.

  794. They

  795. are

  796. things

  797. that we

  798. really

  799. get our

  800. sense

  801. of

  802. worth,

  803. our

  804. value,

  805. our

  806. security.

  807. As

  808. soon

  809. as our

  810. loyalty

  811. to

  812. anything

  813. leads

  814. us to

  815. push

  816. God

  817. to

  818. one

  819. side,

  820. his

  821. word

  822. to

  823. one

  824. side,

  825. idolatry.

  826. It can

  827. be a

  828. physical

  829. object,

  830. it could

  831. be a

  832. property,

  833. it could

  834. be a

  835. person,

  836. it could

  837. be an

  838. activity,

  839. it could

  840. be a

  841. role,

  842. it could

  843. be an

  844. institution,

  845. it could

  846. be a

  847. hope,

  848. it could

  849. be an

  850. image,

  851. it could

  852. be a

  853. pleasure,

  854. it could

  855. be a

  856. hero,

  857. it could

  858. even

  859. be

  860. a

  861. theology.

  862. idolatry.

  863. And so

  864. there's a

  865. whole range

  866. of them

  867. and they're

  868. all different

  869. for all

  870. of us.

  871. We can

  872. have a

  873. power

  874. idolatry,

  875. an

  876. approval

  877. idolatry,

  878. a comfort

  879. idolatry,

  880. a giftedness

  881. idolatry,

  882. a control

  883. idolatry,

  884. a helping

  885. idolatry,

  886. a dependence

  887. idolatry,

  888. an independence

  889. idolatry,

  890. a work

  891. idolatry,

  892. an achievement

  893. idolatry,

  894. a materialism

  895. idolatry,

  896. a religion

  897. idolatry,

  898. an irreligion

  899. idolatry,

  900. a cultural

  901. idolatry,

  902. a family

  903. idolatry,

  904. a relationship

  905. idolatry,

  906. a suffering

  907. idolatry,

  908. an image

  909. idolatry,

  910. an ideology

  911. idolatry,

  912. and on the

  913. list goes

  914. and goes

  915. and goes.

  916. And these

  917. oracles

  918. are designed

  919. to pull the

  920. rug out

  921. from all

  922. of them

  923. and to

  924. show us

  925. their

  926. powerlessness

  927. because

  928. everything

  929. you put

  930. at the

  931. center of

  932. your heart,

  933. the center

  934. of your

  935. life.

  936. If it's

  937. not your

  938. maker,

  939. it will

  940. control you.

  941. It will

  942. cause you

  943. to work

  944. for it.

  945. It will

  946. cause you

  947. to give

  948. yourself

  949. to it.

  950. Only

  951. Jesus

  952. Christ,

  953. our true

  954. maker,

  955. our true

  956. sovereign,

  957. our true

  958. savior,

  959. gives

  960. himself to

  961. us to set

  962. us free.

  963. These

  964. chapters

  965. here are

  966. designed to

  967. expose our

  968. own idols

  969. for the

  970. powerless

  971. jokes that

  972. they are.

  973. If you're

  974. not convinced

  975. of that,

  976. I would

  977. invite you

  978. in this

  979. week to

  980. visit two

  981. places,

  982. the rubbish

  983. tip and

  984. the cemetery.

  985. There you

  986. will discover

  987. the end

  988. of all

  989. life and

  990. the end

  991. of all

  992. things.

  993. The rubbish

  994. tip and the

  995. cemetery.

  996. The

  997. cemetery.

  998. future.

  999. The

  1000. future.

  1001. The

  1002. future.

  1003. The

  1004. future.

  1005. The

  1006. future.

  1007. The

  1008. future.

  1009. The future.

  1010. Judah

  1011. looked to

  1012. the nations.

  1013. What are

  1014. you looking

  1015. to?

  1016. What are

  1017. you looking

  1018. to?

  1019. I'm going

  1020. to do

  1021. what I

  1022. did last

  1023. week.

  1024. Close

  1025. off our

  1026. time together.

  1027. I'm going

  1028. to invite

  1029. you to

  1030. bow your

  1031. heads.

  1032. Put your

  1033. hands out.

  1034. I'm going

  1035. to ask you

  1036. some questions

  1037. that might

  1038. just get

  1039. the start

  1040. of the ball

  1041. rolling for

  1042. you and

  1043. then I'm

  1044. going to

  1045. pray for

  1046. us.

  1047. Let me pray

  1048. to start

  1049. with.

  1050. Jesus

  1051. help us

  1052. to see

  1053. you.

  1054. Help us

  1055. to love

  1056. you.

  1057. Help us

  1058. to obey

  1059. you.

  1060. And in

  1061. doing that

  1062. help us

  1063. to see

  1064. the idols

  1065. of our

  1066. heart that

  1067. displace you

  1068. from the

  1069. center of

  1070. our hearts.

  1071. And so I

  1072. ask you

  1073. what is

  1074. your

  1075. greatest

  1076. nightmare?

  1077. What is

  1078. it that you

  1079. worry about

  1080. the most?

  1081. What

  1082. brings

  1083. out of

  1084. me the

  1085. strongest

  1086. emotions?

  1087. What do

  1088. I rely

  1089. on or

  1090. comfort

  1091. myself with

  1092. when things

  1093. go badly

  1094. or become

  1095. difficult?

  1096. What makes

  1097. me feel

  1098. the most

  1099. self-worth?

  1100. What am

  1101. I the

  1102. proudest

  1103. of?

  1104. What do

  1105. I need,

  1106. I mean

  1107. really need

  1108. other people

  1109. to see

  1110. in me?

  1111. What do

  1112. I really

  1113. want and

  1114. expect out

  1115. of life?

  1116. what would

  1117. really

  1118. make me

  1119. happy?

  1120. I wonder

  1121. if the

  1122. way we

  1123. answer those

  1124. questions

  1125. expose the

  1126. heart that

  1127. would defy

  1128. God if it

  1129. had to.

  1130. gracious God

  1131. we confess

  1132. that we

  1133. have built

  1134. our hearts

  1135. and our

  1136. lives around

  1137. things that

  1138. are good

  1139. but not

  1140. the best

  1141. and so we

  1142. confess our

  1143. idolatry.

  1144. We have

  1145. made these

  1146. things

  1147. absolutes

  1148. things that

  1149. love us.

  1150. And what

  1151. are they

  1152. compared to

  1153. you?

  1154. If we

  1155. have you

  1156. we don't

  1157. have to

  1158. have these

  1159. other

  1160. things.

  1161. These

  1162. idols

  1163. cannot love

  1164. us,

  1165. help us,

  1166. give us

  1167. hope or

  1168. significance or

  1169. save us as

  1170. you do.

  1171. and so

  1172. we ask

  1173. that you

  1174. would please

  1175. forgive us.

  1176. Please

  1177. forgive us

  1178. for trampling

  1179. on your

  1180. love for

  1181. us.

  1182. Please

  1183. forgive us

  1184. for our

  1185. lack of

  1186. gratitude,

  1187. our lack

  1188. of grateful

  1189. joy for

  1190. all that

  1191. you've done

  1192. for us.

  1193. As

  1194. hard as

  1195. it is,

  1196. we desire

  1197. to push

  1198. these idols

  1199. out from

  1200. the centre

  1201. of our

  1202. lives.

  1203. They are

  1204. repulsive

  1205. to you

  1206. and will

  1207. only lead

  1208. to our

  1209. ruin.

  1210. And so

  1211. help each

  1212. one of us

  1213. to see

  1214. them clearly,

  1215. to weigh

  1216. them against

  1217. all of your

  1218. goodness and

  1219. to expel

  1220. them from

  1221. the centre

  1222. of our

  1223. lives by

  1224. your grace.

  1225. Replace

  1226. them with

  1227. your gospel

  1228. by your

  1229. spirit for

  1230. your glory

  1231. and our

  1232. joy.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.
