  1. What picture comes to your mind when you hear the four-letter words, rest?

  2. Do you think of normal assignments, assessments,

  3. or other deadlines that are breathing down your neck?

  4. Or, holidaying somewhere that's warmer, or with your favorite climate?

  5. Like, being somewhere alone, or with only a few people who follow everything you tell them to do without arguing?

  6. Or, having everything taken care of, so you don't have to think.

  7. Don't need to think about what to do.

  8. Don't need to think about what to cook to feed all those hungry mouths.

  9. You know, those hungry and angry type.

  10. I know someone who likes to do some small upper-fixer job around their home or their office as their rest.

  11. Some think of gardening, mowing the lawn, or cleaning up their house.

  12. Most people will have a glass or two of their favorite drinks to celebrate their job well done.

  13. If you have been following our preaching series in the Book of Isaiah,

  14. you may find it strange that I am asking you to imagine rest.

  15. From the beginning of the book to chapter 27,

  16. it has been a restless picture of imminent judgment and a call to repentance.

  17. The Book of Isaiah is about the Holy Creator restoring His holiness among His people

  18. by prophesying and allowing them to be taken captive and subject to a ruthless, unmerciful, ungracious ruler.

  19. God revealed His glory and grace to His people by giving them a negative example of life without Him.

  20. At this point in the book, the topic of rest reminds us that God is gracious and glorious.

  21. The God who made the world and all the things in it, who the Bible reveals and all Christians believe in,

  22. is not as promoted by many other religions as a God that manipulates His believers' lives to keep them in fear,

  23. so they will keep bringing their offerings and serve it with their hands.

  24. God does not take joy in playing with our life or punishing His creations.

  25. God, the Creator, is not as many people choose to believe,

  26. especially many atheist philosophers, that is unloving and distant.

  27. God did not create this world to leave it to run itself.

  28. God has cared for you in every minute of your life since the world was created,

  29. whether you have reached out and found Him or not,

  30. or realizing these threats or not.

  31. The Apostle Paul highlighted this fact about God's creation

  32. and God's interaction with His creation

  33. when he visited the city of Athens in Acts 17, verse 26 to 27.

    Acts 17:26–27

  34. From one man He make all nations that...

  35. From one man He make all nations that they should inhabit the whole earth,

  36. and He mark out for their appointed time in history and the boundary for their land.

  37. God did this so that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him,

  38. though He's not far from any one of us.

  39. If you have reached out and found God,

  40. and you have been a Christian for a while,

  41. however, God seems so far from your life and you are restless and troubled,

  42. or you have never reached out to find God,

  43. let's get back to some basics about our world,

  44. about the God who made it,

  45. and our life by looking at the three aspects of rest.

  46. Rest installed, rest interrupt, and rest restored.

  47. From Messiah 28, another part of the Bible.

  48. There's the outline...

  49. Sorry.

  50. There's the outline in our SingPause app that you can use,

  51. and also you can use this app to drop some notes for yourself to review later.

  52. A few weeks ago, our Senior Minister Steve highlighted that

  53. the Book of Isaiah began with calling the creation as witnesses against God's people.

  54. First 1 to 4 of chapter 1 says,

  55. A book full of woes, warnings, and images of restlessness.

  56. The session beginning from chapter 28 up to chapter 35 presents seven woes.

  57. They provide stark contrast to the creative order,

  58. the original bootplines where the concept of rest is installed.

  59. In Genesis 1 to 2,

  60. as we read about how God created this world in six days,

  61. the faith God saw that it was good

  62. is repeated so many times

  63. that it required great faith for anyone

  64. to think or believe that this world come about

  65. by some accidental explosion like a Big Bang.

  66. I do not know about you.

  67. I do not mind receiving negative comments

  68. when I know I have not done an excellent job.

  69. But if it's something I'm proud of

  70. and consider a job well done,

  71. I do not like criticism or being accused

  72. that I don't care about what I have done.

  73. Suppose the God of the Bible didn't make this world

  74. and consider his creation as good.

  75. How absurd and insulting would it be to him,

  76. the creator,

  77. for humans to believe that this world and our life

  78. are meaningless and without purpose,

  79. as proposed by some atheist philosophers.

  80. Humans rightly deserve our woes

  81. if we forsake our creator.

  82. Sprung the holy God and turn our back on him.

  83. God's original blueprint for our life

  84. was not to be dysfunctional,

  85. under or unfulfillment or restless.

  86. Genesis,

  87. tell us that after six days of creating the world

  88. and everything in it,

  89. God was pleased and satisfied with his creations

  90. and rest from all his work on the seventh day.

  91. Genesis 1, 31 tell us that

  92. God saw all that he made

  93. and it was very good

  94. and there was evening

  95. and there was morning,

  96. the sixth day.

  97. Thus,

  98. the heaven and the earth were completed

  99. in all their vast array.

  100. By the seventh day,

  101. God had finished the work he had been doing.

  102. So on the seventh day,

  103. he rests from all his work.

  104. Then God blessed the seventh day

  105. and make it holy

  106. because on it,

  107. he rests from all the work

  108. of creating that he had done.

  109. Rest is installed in God's creative order

  110. and the creation

  111. were meant to enjoy

  112. resting with God.

  113. God even stipulated

  114. for us to rest with him

  115. as part of the first set of law

  116. that he gave humans.

  117. He called it the Sabbath day.

  118. Exodus 20,

    Exodus 20:8–11

  119. verse 8 to 11,

  120. commands that,

  121. remember the Sabbath day

  122. by keeping it holy.

  123. Six days you shall labor

  124. and do all your work.

  125. By the seventh day,

  126. is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  127. On it,

  128. you shall not do any work.

  129. For in six days,

  130. the Lord made the heavens

  131. and the earth,

  132. the sea,

  133. and all that is in them.

  134. But he rests on the seventh day.

  135. Therefore,

  136. the Lord blessed the Sabbath day

  137. and make it holy.

  138. God take rest from his work.

  139. He blessed that one day

  140. of rest and make it holy.

  141. It is for our good

  142. that we rest from our work regularly.

  143. God knows it

  144. and cares enough about us

  145. to set it as a command

  146. for us to follow.

  147. The day of rest

  148. is a Sabbath to the Lord our God.

  149. Only in God's rest

  150. can we grow our appreciation

  151. towards our Creator

  152. and be made holy.

  153. Human and God's creation

  154. were not designed

  155. to keep going without resting.

  156. Our passage today

  157. in Isaiah 28,

    Isaiah 28:24–25

  158. verse 24 to 25,

  159. used a few rhetorical questions

  160. to highlight this fact.

  161. When a farmer prows for planting,

  162. does he prow continually?

  163. Does he keep on breaking up

  164. and working the soil?

  165. When he has leveled the surface,

  166. does he not sow caraway

  167. and scatter cumin?

  168. Does he not plant wheat in his place,

  169. barley in his pot,

  170. and spout in his field?

  171. We are not meant to work continuously.

  172. Earlier this month,

  173. a ferry captain in Hong Kong

  174. collapsed and died at his work

  175. after being on duty

  176. for 23 consecutive days.

  177. The workers at that ferry company

  178. have a 25 days on

  179. and five days off roster.

  180. Death by overwork in Japan

  181. is so common

  182. that there is a specific Japanese word

  183. for that incident.

  184. A sad reality

  185. of our modern world

  186. that has been true

  187. throughout the ages.

  188. Modernity has some benefit,

  189. but its damage and consequences

  190. far outweigh its usefulness,

  191. especially as it denied

  192. the assistance of God

  193. and ignored God's original plan

  194. for his creation

  195. to rest with him.

  196. During the time of Isaiah,

  197. facing the imminent threat

  198. of invasion,

  199. God's people think

  200. that they have the situation

  201. worked out

  202. by turning their back on God

  203. and agreeing with the neighboring nation

  204. to give them protection.

  205. They even boast about

  206. that arrangement

  207. in verse 14 and 15,

  208. and they were celebrating

  209. that treaty

  210. to the point of getting drunk

  211. and vomiting

  212. in verse 1 to 8.

  213. However,

  214. God calls their arrangement

  215. a covenant with death,

  216. an agreement with the realm of death.

  217. When humans think

  218. they are wiser than God,

  219. the God who created them,

  220. and forsake,

  221. and turn their back on him,

  222. what do you think

  223. is the most reasonable thing

  224. to do

  225. by a loving and righteous God?

  226. When humans

  227. interrupt God's plan,

  228. rest,

  229. a holy, loving God

  230. will take action

  231. to restore that rest.

  232. Ever since humans

  233. disobeyed God

  234. from Genesis 3,

  235. which started with the question

  236. that twisted God's command,

  237. did God really say?

  238. The rest that God

  239. installed in his creation

  240. was interrupted.

  241. Since then,

  242. God has warned

  243. and called his people

  244. back to the rest

  245. that he installed,

  246. calling us back to him

  247. like in verse 11 and 12.

  248. God will speak to his people

  249. to whom he say,

  250. this is a resting place,

  251. let the weary rest,

  252. and this is the place

  253. of response.

  254. But the result

  255. has always been,

  256. but they would not listen.

  257. We are very similar

  258. to the people

  259. in Isaiah's time

  260. in our attitude

  261. towards God's message

  262. and teaching.

  263. When it comes

  264. to listening to God,

  265. we are like

  266. in verse 9 to 13.

  267. Every word

  268. coming from God

  269. becomes,

  270. do this,

  271. do that,

  272. a rule for this,

  273. a rule for that,

  274. a little here,

  275. a little there.

  276. God's people

  277. would not listen to God

  278. has been an issue

  279. from the fall

  280. of human after creation

  281. to now.

  282. The creative order

  283. was interrupted

  284. because we turn

  285. what is meant

  286. to be a relationship

  287. into a transaction

  288. or something mechanical.

  289. We are not looking

  290. into God's word

  291. to have a relationship

  292. with our creator.

  293. We are looking

  294. for a way

  295. to justify

  296. our way of living,

  297. looking for the

  298. bare minimum requirement

  299. to put our

  300. restless soul

  301. at ease.

  302. Many people

  303. are interested

  304. in looking

  305. at the Bible

  306. to find out

  307. what they must do

  308. instead of what

  309. God has done

  310. for them.

  311. God's word

  312. has become

  313. a set of rules

  314. for them,

  315. not the words

  316. from the heart

  317. of their gracious

  318. creator

  319. that they want

  320. to treasure.

  321. Many people

  322. are looking

  323. into the Bible

  324. for religion

  325. instead of a relation.

  326. What about you?

  327. If you have been

  328. coming to St. Paul's

  329. for a while,

  330. how is your

  331. relationship with God?

  332. Have you been

  333. growing in your faith?

  334. God created us

  335. to enjoy

  336. a restful relationship

  337. with the Trinity,

  338. finding our fulfillment

  339. in life

  340. in our relationship

  341. with Him,

  342. but many

  343. treat God

  344. as a vending machine

  345. to become happy

  346. and secure.

  347. As a result,

  348. our life

  349. becomes restless

  350. and troubled.

  351. Theologian

  352. Tim Keller

  353. said in one

  354. of his devotional,

  355. when we are

  356. in trouble,

  357. our soul

  358. chatter to us.

  359. We have to have this

  360. or we won't make it.

  361. This must happen

  362. or all is lost.

  363. The assumption is

  364. God alone

  365. would not be enough.

  366. Some other circumstance,

  367. condition,

  368. or possession

  369. is necessary

  370. to be happy

  371. and secure.

  372. God's people

  373. would not listen

  374. to God

  375. because they

  376. do not treat God

  377. as the God

  378. that created the world

  379. and everything in it,

  380. as the Lord Almighty

  381. that is glorious,

  382. full of justice

  383. and strength.

  384. God's rest

  385. is interrupted

  386. because we

  387. do not listen

  388. to God.

  389. How often

  390. do you hear

  391. when God

  392. say to you,

  393. I've got you,

  394. but you turn

  395. your back

  396. and push him away

  397. and say,

  398. I've got it.

  399. I know what I'm doing.

  400. You are the only one

  401. who would know

  402. the answer

  403. to the following questions.

  404. Have you sacrificed

  405. your relationship

  406. with God

  407. and his people

  408. to build a buffer

  409. in your bank account?

  410. Have you worried

  411. more about

  412. your job security

  413. or finances

  414. than your relationship

  415. with God

  416. and his people?

  417. Have you concerned

  418. more about

  419. how your kids

  420. are doing at school

  421. than their knowledge

  422. and understanding

  423. of God?

  424. Are you finding

  425. rest in God?

  426. Is God

  427. your resting place,

  428. your place

  429. of refuge

  430. and hiding?

  431. King David

  432. wrote in Psalm 62,

  433. in verse 1 and 2,

  434. he said,

  435. Truly,

  436. my soul

  437. finds rest in God.

  438. My salvation

  439. comes from him.

  440. Truly,

  441. he is my rock

  442. and my salvation.

  443. He is my fortress.

  444. I will never be shaken.

  445. It is God's

  446. full intention

  447. for us

  448. to find rest

  449. in him.

  450. He installed

  451. that rest

  452. in the creation,

  453. but humans

  454. were unwilling

  455. to listen

  456. and interrupt

  457. God's rest.

  458. Isaiah told us

  459. in a couple

  460. of chapters later,

  461. in chapter 30,

  462. 15 to 18,

  463. that

  464. this is what

  465. the Sovereign Lord,

  466. the Holy One

  467. of Israel,

  468. says,

  469. In repentance

  470. and rest

  471. is your salvation,

  472. in quietness

  473. and trust

  474. is your strength,

  475. but you will

  476. have none of it.

  477. You say,

  478. No,

  479. we will fleet

  480. on horses.

  481. Therefore,

  482. you will fleet.

  483. You say,

  484. we'll ride off

  485. on shift horses.

  486. Therefore,

  487. your pursuer

  488. will be stripped.

  489. Yet,

  490. the Lord

  491. longs to be

  492. gracious to you.

  493. Therefore,

  494. he'll rise up

  495. to show you

  496. compassion.

  497. For the Lord

  498. is a God

  499. of justice.

  500. Blessed are those

  501. who wait for him.

  502. our restlessness,

  503. like those

  504. experienced

  505. by God's people

  506. in Isaiah's time,

  507. is a direct result

  508. of us

  509. not listening

  510. to God.

  511. Because you

  512. try to flee

  513. from God,

  514. you will always

  515. be running.

  516. You will always

  517. be pursued

  518. because you

  519. try to run

  520. away from God.

  521. As determined

  522. to have us

  523. rest with him

  524. in the blueprint

  525. of the creation,

  526. God is also

  527. determined

  528. to restore rest

  529. in his world

  530. and into your life.

  531. What humans

  532. have done

  533. did not follow

  534. God's original plan.

  535. God has restored

  536. the rest

  537. by pursuing us

  538. to repent.

  539. The Lord,

  540. our God

  541. of justice,

  542. has righted

  543. the wrong

  544. humans committed

  545. against him

  546. and reinstalled

  547. righteousness.

  548. Isaiah 32,

    Isaiah 32:17

  549. verse 17

  550. and the 18

  551. said,

  552. the fruit

  553. of their

  554. righteousness

  555. will be peace.

  556. Its effect

  557. will be quietness

  558. and confident

  559. forever.

  560. My people

  561. will live

  562. in peaceful

  563. dwelling,

  564. in secure

  565. home,

  566. in undisturbed

  567. place of rest.

  568. Verse 16

  569. to 17

  570. of our chapter

  571. today,

  572. in chapter 28,

  573. tell us

  574. a picture

  575. of God's

  576. rebuilding works.

  577. God

  578. rebuilds

  579. his peaceful

  580. dwelling place,

  581. a secure

  582. home,

  583. the undisturbed

  584. places of rest

  585. by laying

  586. a precious

  587. cornerstone

  588. at his

  589. true foundation.

  590. So,

  591. as with the

  592. Chauvin-Law

  593. say,

  594. see,

  595. I lay a stone

  596. in Zion,

  597. a tested stone,

  598. a precious

  599. cornerstone

  600. for a true

  601. foundation.

  602. The one

  603. who relies

  604. on it

  605. will never

  606. be stricken

  607. with panic.

  608. I will

  609. make justice

  610. the measuring

  611. line,

  612. and righteousness

  613. the plumb

  614. line.

  615. A cornerstone

  616. is the first

  617. stone laid

  618. when building

  619. a house

  620. in the ancient

  621. time.

  622. It determines

  623. the orientation

  624. and the size

  625. of the house

  626. by setting

  627. the mesh

  628. lines of it.

  629. It will also

  630. help to secure

  631. to ensure

  632. the walls

  633. are straight

  634. by setting

  635. the plumb

  636. line against

  637. it.

  638. Apostle Peter

  639. has personified

  640. this precious

  641. cornerstone

  642. as Jesus

  643. Christ himself.

  644. He rephrased

  645. these verses

  646. in 1 Peter

  647. 2, 4-6

  648. by switching

  649. him into

  650. it.

  651. As you

  652. come to

  653. him,

  654. the living

  655. stone,

  656. rejected

  657. by human,

  658. chosen by

  659. God,

  660. and precious

  661. to him,

  662. you also,

  663. like living

  664. stones,

  665. are being

  666. built into

  667. a spiritual

  668. house to

  669. be a holy

  670. priesthood,

  671. offering

  672. spiritual

  673. sacrifice

  674. acceptable

  675. to God

  676. through

  677. Jesus

  678. Christ.

  679. For in

  680. the scripture

  681. it says,

  682. see,

  683. I lay a

  684. stone in

  685. Zion,

  686. a chosen

  687. and precious

  688. cornerstone.

  689. The one

  690. who trusts

  691. in him

  692. will never

  693. be put

  694. to shame.

  695. Anyone

  696. who trusts

  697. in Jesus

  698. will never

  699. be put

  700. to shame

  701. or be

  702. stricken

  703. with panic

  704. because God,

  705. Jesus,

  706. did not run

  707. away from

  708. God or

  709. God's plan

  710. for him

  711. to save

  712. the world.

  713. He died

  714. for us

  715. and raised

  716. us up

  717. from death

  718. to show

  719. us God's

  720. compassion.

  721. Jesus was

  722. rejected

  723. by humans

  724. so we can

  725. be accepted

  726. back to

  727. God,

  728. and we

  729. are given

  730. a new

  731. role

  732. on this

  733. earth.

  734. No longer

  735. are you

  736. to run

  737. away from

  738. God.

  739. Every follower

  740. of Jesus

  741. is being

  742. built into

  743. a spiritual

  744. house to

  745. be a holy

  746. priesthood of

  747. God for

  748. his people.

  749. As believer

  750. in God's

  751. mercy and

  752. grace,

  753. your central

  754. role is

  755. no longer

  756. building your

  757. bank account

  758. or credential,

  759. nor your

  760. family or

  761. business.

  762. As believer,

  763. God has

  764. given you

  765. a new

  766. role to

  767. offer

  768. spiritual

  769. sacrifice

  770. acceptable

  771. to God.

  772. Make every

  773. moment of

  774. your life

  775. a living

  776. sacrifice.

  777. When you

  778. write up your

  779. report for

  780. work or

  781. your assignment

  782. for

  783. university,

  784. write them

  785. as an

  786. offering to

  787. God.

  788. When you

  789. cook for

  790. your family

  791. or serve

  792. your customers,

  793. do it as

  794. an offering,

  795. a sacrifice

  796. to God.

  797. Jesus

  798. invite us

  799. in Matthew

  800. 11,

  801. come to

  802. me,

  803. all you

  804. who are

  805. weary

  806. and

  807. burdened,

  808. and I

  809. will give

  810. you rest.

  811. Take my

  812. yoke upon

  813. you and

  814. learn from

  815. me,

  816. for I am

  817. gentle and

  818. humble in

  819. heart,

  820. and you

  821. will find

  822. rest for

  823. your soul,

  824. for my

  825. yoke is

  826. easy and

  827. my burden

  828. is light.

  829. What is

  830. Jesus'

  831. yoke?

  832. What did

  833. he come

  834. to do?

  835. Jesus

  836. answered that

  837. in Luke

  838. 19,

  839. he said,

  840. for the

  841. Son of

  842. Man came

  843. to seek

  844. and to

  845. save the

  846. lost.

  847. When you

  848. live your

  849. life as a

  850. light in

  851. the darkness

  852. for others

  853. to find

  854. God,

  855. if your

  856. primary concern

  857. of your

  858. life is

  859. the salvation

  860. of others,

  861. you will

  862. have rest

  863. in your

  864. life.

  865. Use every

  866. moment of

  867. your interaction

  868. with others

  869. to show

  870. them Christ.

  871. for

  872. believers

  873. and

  874. unbelievers.

  875. In

  876. repentance

  877. and rest

  878. is your

  879. salvation.

  880. In

  881. quietness

  882. and trust

  883. is your

  884. strength.

  885. Come to

  886. Jesus today.

  887. He will

  888. give you

  889. rest.

  890. He is a

  891. resting place

  892. with

  893. true

  894. foundation.

  895. All this

  896. also comes

  897. from the

  898. Lord Almighty,

  899. whose plan

  900. is wonderful,

  901. whose wisdom

  902. is magnificent.

  903. Come to

  904. Jesus today

  905. to get

  906. God's rest

  907. for your

  908. soul.

  909. All right.
