  1. It would be great if you could go to the St Paul's app, open it.

  2. You'll see three main points as we look through today's passage.

  3. The focus of faith, the response of faith, and the life of faith.

  4. Let's pray.

  5. Father God, we ask that you would help us to see you as glorious and as gracious.

  6. We pray that you would give us insight into our own faith and who it is that we are ultimately trusting where our faith lies.

  7. How much of it is relying upon ourselves and how much of it is completely sold out, dependent upon you.

  8. Give us insight and particularly, Lord, that you would change our hearts, that we would see ourselves as we truly are and that we would trust in you.

  9. Amen.

  10. So first of all, the focus of faith in chapter 36, it opens with the Assyrian army, not just breathing down the necks, but actually the very gates of Jerusalem.

  11. What Isaiah does not include in this retelling of the story, which you could also go to two kings and see the same information,

  12. is that King Hezekiah of Judah has already attempted to buy off the Assyrian army by presenting him with treasures that he took from the temple in Jerusalem.

  13. That is, what Hezekiah has already attempted to do is to buy off the king of Assyria by robbing God from the treasury of the temple.

  14. Sennacherib is the king of Assyria, the terrifying king of the nation of Assyria.

  15. We are told here that he is in this moment in Lachish, which is 45 kilometers southwest of Jerusalem.

  16. That's where he is.

  17. Archaeologists in the past discovered a pit in Lachish that is one hole with approximately 1,500 corpses in it attributed to Sennacherib and his conquest of Lachish on his way to Jerusalem.

  18. And so from there, when he is there obliterating that town, he sends a message, he sends a delegation to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem and says,

  19. Guys, it's your turn next.

  20. We're coming for you.

  21. We are told in verse 2 that a meeting of the delegation from the two leaders, two nations, happens at the aqueduct of the upper pool on the road to the Launderer's Field.

  22. And you go, why do we need to know that where it is?

  23. It's because we've already been here before.

  24. That's why we need to know that.

  25. We were here in chapter 7 of Isaiah, exact same place, the aqueduct of the upper pool on the road to Launderer's Field.

  26. This is where Isaiah the prophet had met with King Ahaz, Hezekiah's father, back in chapter 7.

  27. And in that moment, in chapter 7, God had offered to rescue King Ahaz from the threat that he was currently under from the nation of Aram and the northern tribes of Israel.

  28. What did Ahaz do in chapter 7?

  29. Did he turn to God in trust?

  30. No, he made a political alliance with Assyria.

  31. And now Assyria is about to destroy Jerusalem as well.

  32. And the question is, as you come to verse 2, will Hezekiah make the same mistake as his father and go for another political alliance?

  33. Or will he trust in God for his security and deliverance?

  34. In fact, the issue is right there in verse 4 on who is it that Hezekiah trusts.

  35. This is what the great king, the king of Assyria says,

  36. On what are you basing this confidence of yours?

  37. You say you have counsel and might for war,

  38. but you speak only empty words.

  39. On whom are you depending that you rebel against me?

  40. What value is there, Hezekiah, in you trusting in your God who doesn't offer you a battle fleet?

  41. There's no intercontinental ballistic missiles in your arsenal.

  42. You don't have fighter jets parked for the air force in the back of Jerusalem there somewhere.

  43. All you have, Hezekiah, is mere words.

  44. Literally is what that means.

  45. Mere words.

  46. Empty words.

  47. Just words.

  48. That's all you've got.

  49. And what follows from the Assyrian commander in the delegation is a masterpiece of military propaganda.

  50. And he makes two points really in this speech.

  51. The first is don't trust in Egypt.

  52. That has already proven to be true because they've made an alliance with Egypt.

  53. And Egypt hasn't turned up.

  54. So that was pretty stupid.

  55. So don't trust in them.

  56. It's only going to end in tears.

  57. In fact, it already is.

  58. The second point he makes is really the heart of the speech.

  59. He says, don't be deceived into trusting in God either.

  60. Don't trust in God either.

  61. And there's really two points to that speech.

  62. First of all, he says, don't forget Hezekiah has already removed all the high places.

  63. You know, from the perspective of the field commander is actually you shouldn't trust in God because Hezekiah has ticked off God by demolishing all the worship places.

  64. He sees it purely from the perspective of you're actually not worshiping God enough.

  65. God's not on your side at all because you failed him in some kind of way.

  66. Of course, what he doesn't realize is that Hezekiah has done exactly the right thing by removing all the high places of the false gods.

  67. But in verse 13, he says, here's the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

  68. This is what the king says.

  69. Do not let Hezekiah deceive you.

  70. He cannot deliver you.

  71. Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says the Lord will surely deliver us.

  72. This city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

  73. Don't trust Egypt.

  74. Don't trust your God.

  75. Who then should you trust?

  76. Verse 16.

  77. This is what the great king of Assyria says.

  78. Make peace with me.

  79. Trust in me.

  80. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree and drink water from your own cistern.

  81. Until I come and take you to the land like your own.

  82. A land of grain and new wine.

  83. A land of bread and vineyards.

  84. Sennacherib, through his delegation here, is offering Judah the exact same salvation that God has already offered them.

  85. In Egypt.

  86. Put your trust in me and I will take you to the promised land of land flowing with milk and honey.

  87. With vineyards and everything that you could imagine.

  88. And so Sennacherib comes in through his delegation and says,

  89. Don't trust in your God.

  90. Trust in me.

  91. I can deliver it for you.

  92. Come and I will take you to the promised land of mansions and a solid career and influential friends with a big superannuation account.

  93. Trust in me and I will deliver the great life where you can have your ski holidays.

  94. Where you can sun yourself on tropical islands.

  95. Come to me and you'll eat the choices of food.

  96. The wagyu steak.

  97. And come to me and I will offer it to you.

  98. The good life.

  99. The Syrian commander here uses the word trust seven times in his speech.

  100. It's the key issue.

  101. And in this context, the word means to throw oneself down on one's faith.

  102. To lie extended on the ground.

  103. It means deep, deep and entire dependence.

  104. It means coming to an end of yourself.

  105. In other words, come to Sennacherib.

  106. Total submission to him and he will give it all to you.

  107. He'll give it all to you.

  108. Just bow before me.

  109. Of course, ultimately, that leads to some form of a slavery, doesn't it?

  110. And so the question is, is King Hezekiah so crazy that he would confront such a great army with mere words?

  111. Why doesn't he just trottle off and just submit himself to Sennacherib and have the good life?

  112. Is faith in the promise of God and the gospel enough?

  113. Is God's word enough?

  114. Does it contain everything necessary in life and salvation?

  115. That's the question of the first 39 chapters of Isaiah.

  116. And the answer to that question, it depends on who you think God is.

  117. If you think he's just another version of Sennacherib, just a greater one, then no, he's not.

  118. The answer on who God is, we get that in Hezekiah's prayer in chapter 37.

  119. Chapter 37, verse 16.

  120. Firstly, we read that this God that he trusts in is the almighty God.

  121. You know, Sennacherib might be the great king of Assyria, but this is the almighty God.

  122. There is no limitations to his power.

  123. The Lord Almighty is the Lord of hosts, which means that he has an angelic army at his disposal.

  124. Again, in verse 16, we see, secondly, that he is the only God.

  125. He is not just one king amongst the member of kings of the universe around the world, sorry, at the time.

  126. He is the only God.

  127. Unlike every other deity in the world at its time, Hezekiah's God is not a national God.

  128. He's not like one of the gods of the nations that Sennacherib has already destroyed.

  129. He's the God over all the kingdoms of the earth.

  130. Even we see at the end of chapter 37, Sennacherib's own God could not save him from the hand of almighty God.

  131. Thirdly, and again, in verse 16, he is the living God.

  132. Hezekiah's God is the one who made the heaven and the earth.

  133. Other gods are made.

  134. Assyria has defeated all these other gods of all these other nations, verse 19.

  135. But it tells us they're not gods at all.

  136. They're only wood and stone fashioned by human hands.

  137. They're nothing but idols.

  138. But fourthly, unlike Sennacherib, the almighty, the great king of Assyria,

  139. Hezekiah's God is a merciful God.

  140. Verse 16 again.

  141. We read that this Lord, this God, his God, is enthroned between the cherubim.

  142. This is more than a claim that this God is in heaven surrounded by angels.

  143. This is a very specific location we are told here is between the cherubim.

  144. Between the cherubim.

  145. The ark of the covenant in the temple had two cherubims sitting on top of it.

  146. And the ark contained the word of God, God's word, his presence amongst his people.

  147. And the ark shared the same dimensions as the footstool of the royal throne.

  148. In the palace of Jerusalem.

  149. In other words, what it's saying here is that God's throne where he ruled the nations was in heaven

  150. and his presence in the world was his footstool.

  151. We see that, in fact, at the end of Isaiah chapter 36.

    Isaiah 36 chapter mention

  152. 66, sorry.

  153. At the end of Isaiah.

  154. That the earth is his footstool.

  155. In other words, it's his presence.

  156. The ark of the covenant is his presence in the world.

  157. His word is his presence in his world and how he rules and navigates his world.

  158. But between the cherubim.

  159. Between the cherubim was not only the place of divine rule.

  160. It was also the place of divine mercy.

  161. Because in Exodus 35 verse 12.

    Exodus 35:12

  162. Between the cherubim.

  163. Was the atonement cover.

  164. The place where the atonement for sin was made.

  165. By the high priest.

  166. On the day of atonement for the sins of the nation.

  167. In other words, this God of Hezekiah is not just greater than Sennacherib.

  168. He is also a merciful God.

  169. Who forgives the sins of his people.

  170. So, friends, I want to ask you to think about your own life for the moment.

  171. Think of the things that give you cause for worry and anxiety.

  172. Think of the things that wake up.

  173. That maybe cause you to not sleep.

  174. But also bring you awake in the morning.

  175. The first thought of the day.

  176. Think of the people.

  177. Or the circumstances you fear.

  178. The things you can't control in your life right now.

  179. And you've been trying to control them.

  180. And so anxiety and worry is building up.

  181. Maybe it's people whose acceptance that you crave.

  182. Or it might be people whose rejection that you really fear.

  183. Think of the threats to Christianity and the church in our society.

  184. Or of the nations right now.

  185. Who are persecuting God's people around the world.

  186. In such a way that they can't meet like we're meeting this morning.

  187. Now compare them to the God of the Bible.

  188. The Lord Almighty.

  189. God over all.

  190. The maker of heaven and earth.

  191. The God of atoning mercy.

  192. He and he alone is the antidote to fear.

  193. His perfect and powerful love drives out fear.

  194. And so the question that is posed for Hezekiah right now and for Judah is also our question.

  195. In whom do you trust?

  196. Where do you look?

  197. Where are you looking?

  198. So let's move on to the second point.

  199. The response of faith.

  200. Hezekiah makes his move.

  201. He makes his choice.

  202. He responds in faith.

  203. We see that at the beginning of chapter 37.

  204. Verse 1.

  205. When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes.

  206. He put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord.

  207. Hezekiah here, what he does here is an act of public self-humiliation.

  208. The king is meant to wear the finest of clothes.

  209. He's meant to maintain his dignity.

  210. And here he rips off those clothes and he covers himself with sackcloth publicly.

  211. But this is not a man wallowing in self-pity.

  212. Because we are told he goes straight to the presence of God in the temple of God.

  213. Goes straight there.

  214. In fact, he goes into the presence where the Ark of the Covenant is.

  215. He goes straight there.

  216. Straight to the temple.

  217. And to his lasting credit in this moment, what we see is that Hezekiah gets real with God.

  218. He understands in this moment that what really matters is not his relationship with Sennacherib,

  219. the king of Assyria.

  220. The great king of Assyria.

  221. What matters is his relationship with the almighty God, the king of heaven.

  222. That's what matters.

  223. We also see in this moment that he sends off his prime minister and his bishops with a message to Isaiah.

  224. Verse 3.

  225. This is the scenario.

  226. This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace.

  227. As when children come to the moment of birth and there is no strength to deliver them.

  228. What that statement is, it's an admission of complete personal failure and powerlessness.

  229. What Hezekiah is acknowledging there is that his alliance with Egypt, his foreign policy has just, all it's done is angered Assyria and it's also brought the Lord's rebuke.

  230. Notice the statement there.

  231. It's disgrace and it's rebuke.

  232. Jerusalem is so hopeless in this moment.

  233. It is compared to a baby whose mother doesn't even have the energy to deliver her.

  234. This baby is about to die.

  235. There's nothing left.

  236. There's no alternatives.

  237. He is helpless.

  238. Judah is helpless.

  239. They are out of options and Hezekiah is personally humiliated.

  240. He has come to an end of himself.

  241. And he finds his deliverance in God alone.

  242. Verse 36.

  243. Right at the end of the chapter.

  244. The deliverance comes.

  245. God secures the victory and rescues his people as he said he would.

  246. Then the angel of the Lord went out and put to death 185,000 in the Assyrian camp.

  247. And when the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies.

  248. Jerusalem didn't lift a finger.

  249. They didn't even know it happened.

  250. They just simply woke up the next morning and the Assyrian army's been decimated.

  251. That's it.

  252. It was done.

  253. And the chapter ends with Sennacherib himself assassinated by his sons in his temple.

  254. His God could not save him.

  255. His misplaced trust was a deeply misplaced trust.

  256. The enemy of God and his people are defeated.

  257. They're defeated.

  258. It's a spectacular display of divine glory, power and majesty.

  259. And why did it happen?

  260. Why did it happen?

  261. We're given only one clue in these chapters as to why it happened.

  262. Chapter 37 verse 21.

  263. Because you prayed.

  264. Because you prayed.

  265. Hezekiah prays for the victory of God.

  266. That's what he prays for.

  267. And God responds by killing 185,000 soldiers and rescuing his people miraculously.

  268. Was the content of his prayer, God, I call you now to kill 185,000 Assyrian soldiers?

  269. Because that will bring the victory.

  270. No, it wasn't at all.

  271. Save us, God, from these people.

  272. What was the content of his prayer?

  273. Verse 4.

  274. It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the field commander,

  275. whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God,

  276. and that he will rebuke him for the words the Lord your God has heard.

  277. The essence of his prayer is God pursue your glory.

  278. Pursue your glory.

  279. Your name is being mocked.

  280. Can you put up with that?

  281. If God was to rescue his people,

  282. it will not be because the people deserved it in any way whatsoever.

  283. It's not because Hezekiah deserved it in any way whatsoever.

  284. But because God's honour demands it.

  285. And Hezekiah has got to that point.

  286. A complete end to himself.

  287. Commenting on verse 4, John Oswald in his commentary on Isaiah,

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  288. chapters 1 to 39, says this.

  289. This kind of admission of helplessness is frequently a necessity before divine help can be received.

  290. So long as we believe we only need some assistance,

  291. we are still treating ourselves as the lords of the situation.

  292. And that latent pride cuts us off from any help that God would give us.

  293. Only when we have admitted our complete bankruptcy are we able to receive what He has for us.

  294. The response of faith,

  295. the response of faith in God,

  296. is not needing some assistance from God.

  297. You know, God, I've got most of the way there.

  298. You know, look at the good things I do.

  299. Look at the things I've done.

  300. I'm generally a good person.

  301. Don't forget, I go to church and I give money and I help the poor.

  302. I just need a bit extra from you.

  303. It's not some assistance.

  304. It is admitting complete bankruptcy,

  305. complete helplessness.

  306. Hezekiah here has a remarkable,

  307. he is a remarkable example of faith in God despite the circumstances.

  308. He comes to an end in himself and he trusts in nothing,

  309. but God's promise to pursue his glory in the nations.

  310. So just reflect on a moment,

  311. your prayer life in the last week.

  312. Is it like Hezekiah's?

  313. Well, I mean, in the content of your prayers,

  314. particularly think about it if you're not prayed at all.

  315. Because the content of your prayers

  316. or the lack of your prayers

  317. would be an indication as to whether or not

  318. you've completely come to yourself,

  319. end of yourself,

  320. in all things.

  321. Too often I hear in prayers,

  322. and myself as well,

  323. I need your help, God,

  324. just get this thing over the line.

  325. Got a great plan lined up here?

  326. Just tick it over the line for me.

  327. Just push it over the edge so that,

  328. you know,

  329. God, bring glory to yourself by bringing success to my plans.

  330. God, I want you to fix this thing.

  331. Because in my mind,

  332. when you fix that thing,

  333. then you'll be honoured.

  334. That's not what Hezekiah does.

  335. He is a remarkable example of faithfulness in this moment,

  336. of coming to an end of himself

  337. and putting his trust in Almighty God.

  338. And so be like Hezekiah.

  339. See your powerlessness in all situations,

  340. trust the Word of God,

  341. and pray.

  342. This is a case study of faith,

  343. of genuine faith in God,

  344. so have the faith of Hezekiah.

  345. If I left it there,

  346. all I've done is I've just lumbered you

  347. with a bunch of guilt

  348. to pull up your socks and try a lot harder.

  349. Try a lot harder.

  350. And burden you to have more faith.

  351. The central basis of our relationship with God

  352. is not how much our hearts are set on God by faith,

  353. but how unshakably His heart is set on us.

  354. That's the central issue of the Christian walk,

  355. of the walk of faith.

  356. How much His heart is set on us.

  357. And Judah's only hope here

  358. is not the faith of Hezekiah,

  359. but God's heart for His people.

  360. That's it.

  361. And the situation here of Jerusalem

  362. that it's found itself in

  363. points to a much bigger issue

  364. for all of humanity

  365. that the Bible and the Christian faith reveals

  366. that we need deliverance from,

  367. that we are powerless in.

  368. It's so big,

  369. we can do nothing about it at all.

  370. No amount of negotiation with God

  371. can fix this problem.

  372. Ephesians 2 says that every single human need

  373. needs deliverance from sin

  374. and God's wrath.

  375. I'll read it out to you.

  376. As for you,

  377. you were dead in your transgressions and sins

  378. in which you used to live

  379. when you followed the ways of this world

  380. and the rule of the kingdom of the air,

  381. the spirit who is now at work

  382. in those who are disobedient.

  383. All of us

  384. also lived among them at one time,

  385. gratifying the cravings of our flesh

  386. and the following its desires and thoughts.

  387. And like the rest,

  388. we were by nature

  389. deserving of wrath.

  390. What that says there

  391. is that all of humanity

  392. is dead in sin and transgressions

  393. and deserving of God's judgment.

  394. Dead means,

  395. dead people can't help themselves.

  396. We are powerless for our own deliverance.

  397. Every human being,

  398. according to the Bible,

  399. has lived life

  400. doing what the commander of Assyria has done

  401. and it has mocked,

  402. mocked the living God.

  403. Every human being

  404. has done exactly what Sennacherib has done

  405. and sought his own gods

  406. for his salvation.

  407. Every human being.

  408. And Ephesians 2 says

  409. the battle lines are drawn

  410. between us individuals

  411. and the creator God.

  412. And when you put the almighty

  413. and only God,

  414. the creator of all that is,

  415. against you,

  416. the human being,

  417. your powers.

  418. You've got nothing.

  419. We are helpless,

  420. we are hopeless,

  421. we have no power

  422. to rescue ourselves

  423. or deliver ourselves.

  424. We need help.

  425. We need someone to deliver us.

  426. Did you notice that in the text

  427. as it was read through?

  428. The residents of Jerusalem

  429. are on the wall

  430. watching this,

  431. listening to this delegation go out

  432. and they were observers to it all.

  433. Notice as well

  434. that they themselves

  435. did not rip off their clothes

  436. and put on sackcloths.

  437. Hezekiah did.

  438. Notice that they didn't go

  439. to the temple.

  440. Hezekiah did.

  441. In the end,

  442. they were saved

  443. by the intervention

  444. of their king.

  445. That's why they were saved.

  446. Not because they were worthy,

  447. but because of the intervention

  448. of their king.

  449. The king went in

  450. to the place of God

  451. and mediated

  452. on their behalf.

  453. The king humbled himself,

  454. took on sackcloth,

  455. was publicly humiliated.

  456. He emptied himself.

  457. He prayed for the deliverance

  458. of his people

  459. and the people of Jerusalem

  460. did nothing.

  461. Nothing.

  462. It was a,

  463. on Hezekiah's behalf,

  464. it was a spectacular display

  465. of faith

  466. in God.

  467. In that sense,

  468. Hezekiah rebukes us.

  469. But like us,

  470. Hezekiah

  471. had only fleeting moments

  472. of faithfulness.

  473. He'd already tried

  474. to buy off

  475. Assyria.

  476. He'd already

  477. attempted

  478. to align

  479. himself

  480. to Egypt.

  481. And after this,

  482. in the chapters

  483. that follow

  484. in 38

  485. and 39,

  486. especially 39,

  487. he again

  488. gets really

  489. chummy

  490. with Babylon

  491. and makes a deal

  492. with Babylon.

  493. He's a flawed,

  494. flawed king.

  495. So don't be like Hezekiah

  496. because you and I

  497. already are.

  498. We already are

  499. in our faithlessness.

  500. Our faith in God

  501. wavers.

  502. We have our alliances.

  503. We trust in our

  504. superannuation fund.

  505. We trust in our

  506. connections.

  507. We trust in our

  508. psychologists.

  509. We trust in

  510. everything else

  511. except in the

  512. living God

  513. who is more

  514. mighty over all

  515. things.

  516. Even while we

  517. say we trust

  518. in Him.

  519. In chapter

  520. Hezekiah,

  521. what this section

  522. does for us

  523. is that

  524. Hezekiah

  525. points us to

  526. a greater king.

  527. We need

  528. a greater

  529. Hezekiah.

  530. And Hezekiah,

  531. the descendant

  532. of King David,

  533. ultimately

  534. points us to

  535. Jesus Christ,

  536. the greatest

  537. descendant

  538. of King David.

  539. The New Testament

  540. doesn't just tell us

  541. that Jesus Christ

  542. is from the

  543. royal bloodline

  544. of King David

  545. and Hezekiah,

  546. but that Jesus

  547. Christ is divine

  548. Himself.

  549. He's God.

  550. He didn't go,

  551. and Jesus Christ

  552. didn't go into

  553. the presence of

  554. God to mediate

  555. for His people.

  556. He came from

  557. the presence of

  558. God.

  559. to mediate

  560. for His people.

  561. Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  562. tells us that

  563. Jesus Christ

  564. did not consider

  565. equality with God

  566. something that He

  567. would use for

  568. His own benefit,

  569. but that He

  570. humbled Himself

  571. and took on

  572. human form.

  573. And when His

  574. ministry finally

  575. went public

  576. after His baptism,

  577. He went into

  578. the wilderness

  579. and He starts

  580. immediately doing

  581. battle with the

  582. enemy of God,

  583. the greatest

  584. enemy of God,

  585. Satan himself.

  586. and Satan

  587. says,

  588. come,

  589. come to me,

  590. follow me,

  591. just bow down

  592. and prostrate

  593. yourself in front

  594. of me,

  595. and I will

  596. give you all

  597. the nations

  598. of the world.

  599. The very thing

  600. that Jesus

  601. has come to

  602. win for God,

  603. Satan says,

  604. you can have it

  605. all,

  606. just align

  607. yourself with

  608. me.

  609. come to an

  610. end of

  611. yourself,

  612. enter yourself

  613. and bow

  614. yourself down

  615. and worship

  616. me.

  617. And what did

  618. Jesus do in

  619. that moment?

  620. He fought

  621. Satan with

  622. mere words.

  623. Not mere

  624. words,

  625. the word of

  626. God.

  627. But the

  628. battle was

  629. ultimately won

  630. when Jesus

  631. went lower

  632. still.

  633. Not just

  634. that He

  635. became a

  636. man,

  637. but He

  638. went lower

  639. still.

  640. It wasn't

  641. just that God

  642. took on

  643. human form,

  644. He went

  645. lower still.

  646. The eternal

  647. God,

  648. the one who

  649. has been

  650. from everlasting

  651. to everlasting,

  652. the one who

  653. never ever had

  654. a beginning,

  655. came to an

  656. end on the

  657. cross.

  658. He went

  659. to death

  660. on a cross

  661. publicly,

  662. the cross,

  663. the crucifixion

  664. of shame

  665. and humiliation

  666. on the

  667. outskirts of

  668. Jerusalem.

  669. Just on the

  670. outskirts of

  671. Jerusalem where

  672. everyone in

  673. Jerusalem could

  674. see.

  675. And He went

  676. to the cross

  677. and He paid

  678. the punishment

  679. for our sin

  680. because we

  681. have robbed

  682. God of His

  683. glory just

  684. like Assyria

  685. is doing

  686. right now.

  687. And in

  688. going to

  689. the cross

  690. He satisfied

  691. God's just

  692. anger.

  693. There's no

  694. more debt

  695. to pay.

  696. God's just

  697. anger was

  698. not poured

  699. out upon us

  700. who deserve

  701. His judgment.

  702. He poured

  703. it out upon

  704. Himself.

  705. God didn't

  706. obliterate

  707. humanity.

  708. He didn't

  709. obliterate

  710. the Roman

  711. Empire.

  712. He didn't

  713. obliterate

  714. everyone.

  715. God

  716. obliterated

  717. Himself on

  718. the cross.

  719. He turned

  720. His anger

  721. upon Himself

  722. to satisfy

  723. His judgment.

  724. He allowed

  725. Himself to

  726. be killed

  727. so that His

  728. enemies could

  729. be His

  730. friends.

  731. God

  732. will

  733. be

  734. saved.

  735. That is

  736. the great

  737. victory that

  738. God has

  739. won for

  740. us.

  741. And in

  742. His

  743. resurrection

  744. Jesus

  745. defeated

  746. death so

  747. that those

  748. who put

  749. their faith

  750. in Him

  751. have

  752. completely

  753. all sin

  754. or failure

  755. removed

  756. and live

  757. forever in

  758. His presence.

  759. So the

  760. two greatest

  761. enemies of

  762. humanity,

  763. sin and

  764. death,

  765. have been

  766. defeated by

  767. Christ on

  768. the cross and

  769. through His

  770. resurrection.

  771. And this is a

  772. victory that

  773. is over

  774. everything that

  775. is broken,

  776. evil, wrong,

  777. corrupt and

  778. unjust in our

  779. world.

  780. It is a total

  781. and universal

  782. victory.

  783. And as

  784. Christians,

  785. we wait

  786. for Jesus

  787. to return

  788. to seal

  789. that final

  790. victory and

  791. take us

  792. into His

  793. land of

  794. plenty

  795. forever.

  796. He's

  797. promised us

  798. that.

  799. And make

  800. no mistake,

  801. you, I

  802. and every

  803. other Christian

  804. throughout

  805. humanity,

  806. we have

  807. not lifted

  808. a single

  809. finger for

  810. that victory

  811. to be ours.

  812. Not a

  813. single finger.

  814. it is

  815. entirely of

  816. His.

  817. Entirely.

  818. So what

  819. does it

  820. mean to

  821. live by

  822. faith?

  823. What are

  824. we to

  825. do?

  826. We are

  827. to look

  828. to Jesus

  829. for our

  830. eternal

  831. deliverance

  832. as Hezekiah

  833. looked to

  834. God in

  835. the temple.

  836. We are

  837. to look

  838. to the

  839. same God

  840. for our

  841. eternal

  842. deliverance.

  843. We are

  844. not to

  845. try harder

  846. to be

  847. like Hezekiah

  848. for our

  849. deliverance.

  850. We look

  851. to the

  852. God that

  853. He

  854. himself

  855. looked

  856. to.

  857. To

  858. quote Tim

  859. Keller

  860. who died

  861. this last

  862. week,

  863. if you

  864. are falling

  865. off a

  866. cliff,

  867. strong

  868. faith in

  869. a weak

  870. branch

  871. is

  872. fatally

  873. inferior

  874. to weak

  875. faith in

  876. a strong

  877. branch.

  878. It's

  879. not the

  880. amount of

  881. your faith

  882. that matters.

  883. It's the

  884. object of

  885. your faith

  886. that matters.

  887. To

  888. continue

  889. your

  890. color.

  891. Salvation

  892. is not

  893. finally

  894. based on

  895. the strength

  896. of your

  897. faith,

  898. but on

  899. the object

  900. of your

  901. faith.

  902. Come to

  903. Jesus and

  904. put your

  905. faith in

  906. him.

  907. Weak

  908. faith is

  909. enough

  910. because he

  911. is a

  912. mighty

  913. deliverer.

  914. Secondly,

  915. what does it

  916. look to

  917. live by

  918. faith day

  919. by day,

  920. trusting

  921. in him?

  922. Hebrews

  923. 12,

  924. so if

  925. you're a

  926. Christian,

  927. sit in

  928. the room,

  929. Hebrews

  930. 12 tells

  931. us to

  932. look to

  933. Jesus,

  934. the author

  935. and the

  936. perfecter

  937. of our

  938. faith.

  939. He's

  940. done it

  941. all.

  942. He doesn't

  943. just

  944. describe for

  945. us or reveal

  946. to us what

  947. actual faith

  948. is.

  949. He's

  950. completed it

  951. for us.

  952. He's

  953. completed our

  954. faith.

  955. He is the

  956. one, the

  957. glorious and

  958. powerful and

  959. patient and

  960. merciful one

  961. who we are

  962. told is

  963. risen from

  964. the dead

  965. and always

  966. lives to

  967. make intercession

  968. for us.

  969. So not

  970. only has

  971. he made

  972. intercession

  973. mediating

  974. between us

  975. for our

  976. salvation,

  977. he mediates

  978. for us now

  979. in our

  980. faithlessness.

  981. He's in the

  982. throne room

  983. taking my

  984. weak prayers.

  985. Father, what

  986. Steve really

  987. means is

  988. this.

  989. he's

  990. interceding

  991. for me

  992. now in

  993. my faith.

  994. Father, don't

  995. forget he's

  996. with us.

  997. He's one of

  998. ours.

  999. We love

  1000. him.

  1001. Therefore, I

  1002. want to call

  1003. you to

  1004. confidently,

  1005. boldly pray

  1006. for the

  1007. victory of

  1008. God in

  1009. your life

  1010. and in

  1011. this world.

  1012. Pray for

  1013. his name to

  1014. be honoured

  1015. by you in

  1016. your heart,

  1017. in your

  1018. mind.

  1019. Pray for

  1020. his kingdom

  1021. to rule

  1022. you,

  1023. that his

  1024. will will

  1025. be done

  1026. on earth

  1027. as it is

  1028. in heaven.

  1029. Pray that

  1030. he would

  1031. open the

  1032. door to

  1033. the gospel.

  1034. Pray that

  1035. he will

  1036. give boldness

  1037. to you,

  1038. that he

  1039. will save

  1040. Chatswood

  1041. for his

  1042. glory.

  1043. And as

  1044. we do

  1045. that as

  1046. his people,

  1047. remember that

  1048. today the

  1049. enemies of

  1050. the church

  1051. of Jesus

  1052. Christ,

  1053. they're not

  1054. political,

  1055. they're not

  1056. ethnic,

  1057. they're not

  1058. national.

  1059. Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  1060. chapter 6

  1061. tells us

  1062. that our

  1063. struggle is

  1064. not against

  1065. flesh and

  1066. blood,

  1067. but against

  1068. the rulers

  1069. and against

  1070. the authorities,

  1071. against the

  1072. powers of

  1073. this dark

  1074. world and

  1075. against the

  1076. spiritual

  1077. forces of

  1078. evil in

  1079. the heavenly

  1080. realms.

  1081. note as

  1082. a disciple

  1083. of Jesus

  1084. if you

  1085. are,

  1086. that this

  1087. is an

  1088. enemy that

  1089. is too

  1090. great for

  1091. you.

  1092. And until

  1093. our king

  1094. comes from

  1095. heaven to

  1096. bring his

  1097. total and

  1098. complete renewal

  1099. of all

  1100. things,

  1101. we will

  1102. waver

  1103. in our

  1104. faith.

  1105. and note

  1106. too that

  1107. we don't

  1108. desire the

  1109. destruction of

  1110. a single

  1111. human being.

  1112. We don't

  1113. pray for the

  1114. enemies to

  1115. be crushed

  1116. like Assyria

  1117. was crushed.

  1118. As

  1119. Christians,

  1120. we do not

  1121. kill our

  1122. enemies,

  1123. we pray for

  1124. our enemies.

  1125. We pray that

  1126. God would

  1127. rule in it,

  1128. they would

  1129. come to an

  1130. end to

  1131. themselves and

  1132. that God

  1133. would rule

  1134. in their

  1135. life just

  1136. as Jesus

  1137. taught us

  1138. to.

  1139. The great

  1140. battle today

  1141. that God

  1142. is fighting,

  1143. the miraculous

  1144. work that

  1145. he's doing

  1146. in this

  1147. world is

  1148. a battle

  1149. that's not

  1150. fought with

  1151. swords,

  1152. it's not

  1153. fought with

  1154. political

  1155. force,

  1156. it's not

  1157. fought with

  1158. alliances,

  1159. it's fought

  1160. with words.

  1161. Mere

  1162. words,

  1163. as the

  1164. Assyrian

  1165. commander

  1166. said,

  1167. but more

  1168. than mere

  1169. words,

  1170. but with

  1171. the good

  1172. news of

  1173. the gospel

  1174. of Jesus

  1175. Christ

  1176. crucified

  1177. and risen

  1178. for our

  1179. deliverance

  1180. and the

  1181. deliverance

  1182. of all

  1183. people.

  1184. It's a

  1185. battle that's

  1186. fought for

  1187. the souls

  1188. of all

  1189. people,

  1190. it is

  1191. fought in

  1192. the power

  1193. of the

  1194. Holy Spirit,

  1195. it is

  1196. fought with

  1197. the words

  1198. of the

  1199. truth

  1200. and with

  1201. deeds of

  1202. love and

  1203. justice.

  1204. And all

  1205. of that,

  1206. all of that

  1207. is shrouded,

  1208. backed up

  1209. by prayer

  1210. as we

  1211. plead for

  1212. his glory

  1213. and his

  1214. grace to

  1215. be revealed

  1216. to the

  1217. nations.

  1218. And the

  1219. victory will

  1220. come and

  1221. it will

  1222. come through

  1223. word and

  1224. prayer.

  1225. Thank you.
