  1. We have spent two months in the book of Isaiah

  2. and covered about two-thirds of the chapters.

  3. Have you caught a glimpse of God's glory and grace yet?

  4. We have passed through the junction of chapter 39

  5. where Isaiah addresses God's people

  6. as they face the imminent threat of the Assyrian emperor,

  7. Aidan.

  8. Thank you.

  9. And we passed this junction to where now Isaiah addresses God's people

  10. as refugees in exile from chapter 40 onward.

  11. We have seen glimpses of God's glory and grace

  12. through God's holiness, present kingship, rules, judgment, rest, delivery, and arrival.

  13. Please visit our webpage or our YouTube channel

  14. to revisit those sermons until you see them,

  15. until you see the glory of God,

  16. the God's glory and grace,

  17. especially if you recently joined us or watching us online.

  18. As Tim Chester very helpfully summarized for us in this book,

  19. we need to study Isaiah at least for the following seven reasons.

  20. It enlarges our view of God,

  21. enriches our love for Christ,

  22. sharpen our understanding of salvation,

  23. illuminates our Bible reading,

  24. comforts our fear and sorrows,

  25. excites our vision for the church,

  26. and fuels our commitment to mission.

  27. These are what you can and should look for as you read Isaiah.

  28. More than any other book in the Old Testament,

  29. Isaiah forms a bridge between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

  30. And only hearing a 20 to 30 minute sermon each Sunday

  31. will not be enough for you to see that and to appreciate this link.

  32. So please pick up your Bible during the week and read Isaiah for yourself.

  33. You can buy this book by Tim Chester called Isaiah for You,

  34. or you can also use this study guide with guided questions for your reflection as you read.

  35. We can email this to you if you give us your detail

  36. using the link in our description in the live stream,

  37. or just fill in the form in the iPad outside on our Connect desk.

  38. Today, I hope to show you God's glory and grace in his victory

  39. as we look into chapter 43 in more detail.

  40. So please turn your Bible to chapter 43 or open our St. Paul's app.

  41. You'll find in chapter 43 themes that contain throughout chapter 40 to 48.

  42. The chapter can be divided into two sessions.

  43. Both sessions start up with the new Exodus.

  44. The former session followed by God in child,

  45. and the later session, human in child.

  46. And that will be the structure of today.

  47. The Exodus language appears in verse 1 to 7 and 14 to 21,

  48. starting both sessions saying,

  49. this is what the Lord says,

  50. and finishing with God mentioning the people he formed.

  51. They both refer to God as our Creator, Redeemer, and the Holy One.

  52. God led his people out of Egypt through the water and river into the promised land.

  53. He wiped out their enemy and provided food and water for them.

  54. He will do it again about 70 years after their exile to Babylon.

  55. It's around 200 years from when God's people initially heed these promises of delivery.

  56. God redeemed his people from slavery in Egypt to form a new nation.

  57. The same promise and operation will take place in the future.

  58. God will gather his people back to him through a new Exodus.

  59. God sent his people into exile as judgment against their sin,

  60. for they will not follow his way.

  61. They do not obey his law.

  62. But the gathering is not just referring to the return of God from Babylon.

  63. God will gather his people from the east and west,

  64. north and south, from the end of the earth.

  65. The promise of a new Exodus, the delivery from God's judgment,

  66. is not just for God's people in Isaiah's time.

  67. God will show his mercy and grace and keep redeeming for his glory.

  68. And most remarkably, he says,

  69. I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

  70. Since you are precious and honor in my sight,

  71. and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you,

  72. nations in exchange for your life.

  73. God loves the people he created for his glory,

  74. whom he formed and made.

  75. He will continue to give people a nation in exchange for them.

  76. God accomplished the new Exodus by doing an exchange,

  77. substituting one for the other.

  78. In the book of John in the New Testament,

  79. it tells us that the person that God gave up in exchange for us

  80. and to give us new life is Jesus.

  81. John 3.16 says,

  82. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,

  83. that whomever believed in him shall not perish,

  84. but have eternal life.

  85. Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise

  86. of a more significant, better Exodus from slavery and death.

  87. God promised in Isaiah 43.19 that,

  88. I am making a way in the wilderness and a stream in the wasteland.

  89. Jesus, in John 14, referred to himself as the way, the truth, and the life.

  90. In both John 4.7,

  91. Jesus referred to himself as the living water

  92. that will cringe all human thirst.

  93. The writers of the New Testament see Jesus as a redeemer

  94. who set us free to lead us back to God.

  95. Last Sunday, when we looked into Isaiah 40,

  96. we highlighted how Mark's gospel

  97. began to announce the end of exile

  98. and how Jesus was referred to as the Passover lamb.

  99. Based on Isaiah's proclamation of God's promise,

  100. writer in the New Testament could interpret what Jesus accomplished

  101. as the ultimate Exodus of liberation from sin and death.

  102. Throughout the New Testament,

  103. the work of Jesus is described using New Exodus language.

  104. At the Transfiguration in Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  105. Jesus, Moses, and Elijah spoke about Jesus' departure,

  106. which in Greek means Exodus.

  107. Luke's account of the Last Supper in chapter 22

  108. referenced the Passover lamb,

  109. Passover because Jesus is a true Passover lamb

  110. whose blood redeemed us from sin and protect us from death.

  111. Paul and Peter also wrote their letters

  112. with the Exodus model in mind.

  113. God's people were given a promise of hope

  114. that their exiles of judgment will come to an end.

  115. This promise is also offered to us

  116. with the same intimacy

  117. as spoken in verse 2 to 5 in Isaiah 43.

  118. Maybe you feel like you're sinking

  119. or being overwhelmed by life

  120. or you're feeling the heat

  121. of all the troubles that are happening.

  122. If the thought of God coming to you

  123. scares you more than bringing you joy,

  124. maybe there is something in your past

  125. that caused you to worry about

  126. whether God still loves you.

  127. God is telling you to forget the formal things.

  128. Do not dwell in the past.

  129. See, I am doing a new thing.

  130. Now it's springing up.

  131. Do you not perceive it.

  132. The past is helpful for certain things,

  133. which I will talk about later.

  134. But God has repeatedly reminded his people

  135. to forget the formal things

  136. and not to dwell on the past

  137. because many of God's people

  138. often have eyes but are blind,

  139. have ears but are deaf,

  140. as stated in verse 8.

  141. Human do not perceive the work of God

  142. in their life and the world

  143. because humans have a very small

  144. and limited view of God.

  145. We do not see God as who he is.

  146. So God is taking a nation to court.

  147. We do not see...

  148. He put himself on trial,

  149. bringing accusation against the other gods

  150. and ideology of the world,

  151. ultimately challenging our perception of him.

  152. All the nations gather together

  153. in the people's assembly,

  154. which of their gods foretold this

  155. and proclaim to us the former things.

  156. Let them bring in their weakness

  157. to prove they are right

  158. so that others may hear and say it is true.

  159. God lays out the evidence of his credentials

  160. in verse 10 to 13,

  161. and this is what he says.

  162. I am the creator.

  163. Before me, no God was formed,

  164. nor will there be one after me.

  165. All other gods or ideologies are man-made.

  166. God goes into details in chapter 40 to 46

  167. as to the foolishness and delusion

  168. of those who create idols of God's creation.

  169. He goes on to say,

  170. I am the savior.

  171. Apart from me, there's no savior.

  172. God alone can save.

  173. I am not some foreign god among you.

  174. Even though God's people

  175. often mistake others to be their savior,

  176. but in reality,

  177. it was God who has saved them.

  178. God is a revealer.

  179. I have revealed and proclaimed.

  180. God has spoken through his prophets,

  181. his son, and in his word.

  182. Only God can talk about the future.

  183. Which of their gods foretold this

  184. and proclaim to us the former things?

  185. God alone is a true God

  186. because he can predict the future,

  187. and he can predict the future

  188. because he determines the future.

  189. God is a sovereign king.

  190. No one can deliver me,

  191. deliver out of my hand

  192. when I ask who can reserve it.

  193. No God can undo the work of God

  194. throughout the history of mankind.

  195. God alone is the creator,

  196. savior,

  197. revealer,

  198. and king.

  199. No one else can create,

  200. recreate,

  201. save,

  202. reveal,

  203. and reign.

  204. God is unique,

  205. and there's no other like him.

  206. He's mighty to save

  207. and worthy of all

  208. of our following and praise.

  209. Is that how you see God?

  210. What kind of God

  211. are you presenting to the world?

  212. When people look at your life,

  213. is God just like

  214. any other idol

  215. people use to fill in their life?

  216. Like some vending machine

  217. that you put in your good deeds

  218. in exchange for comfort and peace.

  219. These are essential questions

  220. because God has chosen us

  221. to be his servant and witness.

  222. God's people are living proof

  223. that God and God alone can save.

  224. You are my witness

  225. and my servant

  226. whom I have chosen

  227. so that you might know

  228. and believe me

  229. and understand that I am he.

  230. You are my witness

  231. that I am God,

  232. yes,

  233. and from ancient days

  234. I am he.

  235. What you tell

  236. or show people

  237. about your experience of God

  238. in your daily life,

  239. in your testimony you give,

  240. in how you treat your colleagues,

  241. classmates,

  242. neighbors,

  243. and friends

  244. are all the reviews

  245. that you provide

  246. for God before humanity.

  247. Testifying to God

  248. before humanity

  249. is a role of Christian

  250. and God's church.

  251. No matter how long

  252. you have been a Christian,

  253. whether on a staff team

  254. or as a leader,

  255. Christians are chosen

  256. to be God's witness

  257. without exception.

  258. God has done

  259. what no other God can do

  260. and what he has done

  261. no other God can undo.

  262. If God has trusted you

  263. to witness for him,

  264. why spend so much time thinking,

  265. am I good enough

  266. to do the job?

  267. God has chosen you

  268. and knows

  269. what he can do

  270. with you.

  271. It's a worry

  272. about whether

  273. you will do a good job,

  274. more of a concern

  275. about saving your faith

  276. and looking competent

  277. before people

  278. than helping others

  279. to catch glimpses

  280. of God's glory

  281. and grace.

  282. If the creator,

  283. savior,

  284. revealer,

  285. and king

  286. has faith in you

  287. as his witness,

  288. your most appropriate

  289. response

  290. will only be

  291. putting your faith

  292. in him

  293. and asking him

  294. to help you

  295. to get the job done.

  296. So many of us

  297. treat God

  298. and the role

  299. he gives us

  300. like the people

  301. in Isaiah's time,

  302. allowing other things

  303. to weary us

  304. and see everything

  305. as a burden

  306. but not bother

  307. to ask God

  308. for help.

  309. Yet,

  310. you have not

  311. called on me,

  312. Jacob.

  313. You have not

  314. weary yourself

  315. for me,

  316. Israel.

  317. God's demand

  318. are not burdensome.

  319. He knows

  320. what we can handle

  321. at different stages

  322. of our life.

  323. God says

  324. in verse 23,

  325. I have not burdened you

  326. with grain offering,

  327. nor weary you

  328. with demands

  329. for incense.

  330. But God states

  331. in verse 24

  332. that the main issue

  333. is not on his side

  334. but what humanity

  335. is doing

  336. with our life.

  337. You have burdened me

  338. with your sins

  339. and weary me

  340. with your offenses.

  341. It's not God's demand

  342. that are burdensome

  343. but our action,

  344. our way of life,

  345. and our attitude

  346. regarding sins

  347. and towards God

  348. that need to be examined.

  349. So,

  350. after putting himself

  351. on trial,

  352. God now

  353. put humanity

  354. on trial

  355. to address

  356. the accusation

  357. against him

  358. and put the record

  359. straight.

  360. Refill the past

  361. for me.

  362. Let's argue

  363. the matters together.

  364. Stay the case

  365. for your innocence.

  366. As I say,

  367. the past is helpful

  368. to a certain point.

  369. It's helpful

  370. as a reference point

  371. for us

  372. to see what God

  373. has done

  374. and reveal

  375. how we have

  376. treated God.

  377. And when humans do,

  378. what does humanity

  379. have to show

  380. for their innocence?

  381. Very little.

  382. There's no case

  383. for human,

  384. humanity

  385. is in innocence.

  386. Your first father

  387. sinned,

  388. those I sent

  389. to teach you

  390. rebels against me.

  391. Since Adam

  392. rebels against God,

  393. the world

  394. is broken

  395. by sin

  396. and everything

  397. is falling apart.

  398. Looking through history,

  399. no one could support

  400. the case of innocence,

  401. not even Abraham,

  402. whom God

  403. credited as righteous.

  404. And the final

  405. verdict

  406. on humanity

  407. is destruction

  408. as mentioned

  409. in verse 28.

  410. Destruction

  411. is what humanity

  412. deserves,

  413. but that's not

  414. the end

  415. of God's trial

  416. of humankind.

  417. There's a crucial

  418. first

  419. before God

  420. calls us

  421. to reveal the past

  422. that we need

  423. to look at.

  424. God says

  425. in verse 25,

  426. I,

  427. even I,

  428. am the one

  429. who brought out

  430. your transgression

  431. for my own sake.

  432. And remember

  433. your sin

  434. no more.

  435. As I have

  436. explained earlier,

  437. before God

  438. examines our case

  439. of inevitable defeat,

  440. even before

  441. any evidence

  442. is presented,

  443. and with such

  444. an undeniable

  445. verdict,

  446. God already

  447. has a substitution

  448. to take our place.

  449. Jesus steps

  450. into humanity

  451. and takes our place

  452. in the judgment.

  453. There will be

  454. a final day

  455. of judgment,

  456. but for God's

  457. people,

  458. the trial

  459. is over.

  460. It's done

  461. and dusted

  462. with the death

  463. and resurrection

  464. of Jesus,

  465. with the judgment

  466. falling on Jesus

  467. and him

  468. taking our place.

  469. God

  470. blocked out

  471. our transgression

  472. and remembers

  473. our sin

  474. no more.

  475. In Romans

  476. 4,

  477. 25,

  478. it says,

  479. he was delivered

  480. over to death

  481. for our sins

  482. and was straight

  483. to life

  484. for our

  485. justification.

  486. The not guilty

  487. verdict

  488. has already

  489. been delivered.

  490. The examination

  491. is over

  492. and we have

  493. passed

  494. with full marks

  495. because

  496. we got the

  497. grade that

  498. Jesus deserved.

  499. In verse 25

  500. tell us that

  501. God blocks out

  502. our transgression

  503. for his own sake.

  504. God sent Jesus

  505. for our sake

  506. to meet our need

  507. for a redeemer.

  508. But he also sent

  509. Jesus for his own sake

  510. that is to reveal

  511. his glory

  512. and grace.

  513. God promised

  514. not to remember

  515. your sins

  516. no more

  517. and that's all

  518. the more reason

  519. why we should forget

  520. the former things

  521. and do not dwell

  522. on the past.

  523. So don't be

  524. better

  525. at remembering

  526. your sin

  527. than God is.

  528. Jesus

  529. gave

  530. the best

  531. witness

  532. of God's

  533. glory

  534. and grace

  535. of how much

  536. God loves you

  537. and me.

  538. God says

  539. in verse 10

  540. you are my

  541. witness

  542. and my servant

  543. whom I have

  544. chosen

  545. so that you

  546. may know

  547. and believe

  548. me

  549. and understand

  550. that I am

  551. he.

  552. The more

  553. you witness

  554. and serve

  555. God

  556. in your life

  557. and by your

  558. proclamation

  559. the more

  560. you will

  561. know

  562. and believe

  563. and understand

  564. that God

  565. is true

  566. and it's

  567. your heavenly

  568. father

  569. who treasure

  570. and loves

  571. you.

  572. After the

  573. pastor and

  574. theologian

  575. Tim Keller

  576. passed away

  577. a few years

  578. ago

  579. many people

  580. wrote tribute

  581. about his

  582. impact on

  583. them.

  584. Trish

  585. Warren

  586. a New York

  587. Time

  588. columnist

  589. said Tim

  590. Keller

  591. showed her

  592. what a

  593. Christian

  594. leader

  595. should be.

  596. witness

  597. Tim

  598. Keller

  599. in a

  600. public

  601. debate

  602. with a

  603. secular

  604. humanist

  605. in her

  606. early

  607. twenties.

  608. At one

  609. moment

  610. Keller's

  611. opponent

  612. struggled

  613. with the

  614. point he

  615. was making

  616. and was

  617. fair and

  618. clear.

  619. Keller

  620. did not

  621. go in

  622. for the

  623. cue

  624. making

  625. his

  626. opponent

  627. look

  628. foolish

  629. instead

  630. he paused

  631. and asked

  632. is this

  633. what you

  634. mean?

  635. Restating

  636. and strengthening

  637. the argument

  638. more precisely

  639. before his

  640. countering.

  641. She says

  642. this in

  643. her tribute

  644. this generosity

  645. and understanding

  646. towards those

  647. with whom

  648. we disagree

  649. helped shape

  650. the way

  651. I now see

  652. the world.

  653. It had more

  654. of an impact

  655. on me

  656. as a

  657. Christian

  658. than any

  659. argument

  660. could.

  661. Keller

  662. refused

  663. to easily

  664. refuse

  665. the easy

  666. route of

  667. debate

  668. insisting

  669. on finding

  670. the best

  671. argument

  672. of others

  673. even

  674. it means

  675. strengthening

  676. his

  677. opponent's

  678. case.

  679. He was

  680. in pursuit

  681. for truth

  682. and kindness

  683. not

  684. point

  685. scoring.

  686. That night

  687. I saw

  688. what Christian

  689. leaders

  690. should be

  691. like.

  692. With his

  693. life

  694. Tim Keller

  695. testified to

  696. God's

  697. victory

  698. through

  699. Christ

  700. to the

  701. world.

  702. We are

  703. not

  704. Tim

  705. Keller

  706. and many

  707. of us

  708. rarely

  709. engage

  710. in public

  711. debate.

  712. However

  713. we

  714. interact

  715. with

  716. many

  717. people

  718. daily

  719. having

  720. different

  721. conversations

  722. and

  723. discussions

  724. with

  725. others

  726. and

  727. most

  728. of

  729. time

  730. with

  731. ourselves.

  732. At

  733. all those

  734. moments

  735. take

  736. comfort

  737. and hope

  738. in God's

  739. glory and

  740. grace

  741. to treat

  742. the past

  743. and God

  744. in the

  745. proper

  746. perspective.

  747. Remember

  748. the victory

  749. God has

  750. accomplished

  751. through

  752. Jesus'

  753. exodus

  754. for us

  755. all.

  756. And be

  757. God's

  758. witness

  759. that we

  760. belong

  761. to God's

  762. family

  763. in God's

  764. present

  765. and God's

  766. future.

  767. May God

  768. bless you

  769. and keep

  770. you.

  771. Thank you.
