  1. Good morning, everyone. Great to be in church with you this morning. My name's Steve, and

  2. it is a brisk morning. I'm a little bit cold, and I'm hoping to warm up as I preach. So just

  3. bear with me on that. It's just really that my core temperature must be dropped or something

  4. this morning. But it's great to be in church with you. We've been on a journey through

  5. the book of Isaiah, and we're coming towards some really crucial bits and towards the end

  6. of it. So I'm really glad you're here, and I'm glad that you checked it in online with

  7. us this morning. I'd be grateful if you get Isaiah 53 open in front of you. Also, there's

  8. St. Paul's app. There's a message, an outline for today's message, God's surprising servant.

  9. It will help you immensely as we go through. Well, Eric Liddell was a Scottish sprinter, rugby

  10. player and Christian missionary. He was known for his refusal to run in the heats for his

  11. favoured event, the 100 metre sprint at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. He received significant

  12. pressure from the then Prince of Wales and the World Olympic Committee to run on a Sunday,

  13. and it was against his Christian conviction to do so. And he only found out the heats were

  14. on on the Sunday as he was travelling to Paris on the boat. He ended up, by the goodness of

  15. one of his colleagues, swapped events with him, and he ended up winning the gold medal for

  16. the 100 metre race instead at the 24 Olympics. His life, at least at that point of his life,

  17. is captured in the 1981 movie, Chariots of Fire. But his legacy is much greater than winning a gold medal.

  18. Immediately after winning the gold medal, he did what he wanted to do for the rest of his life,

  19. and he set out as a missionary to China. He returned to China. He was born in China to missionary parents.

  20. And he remained in China until his death in a Japanese civilian internment camp in 1945.

  21. Liddell's Olympic training and racing, his Christian convictions, everything that influenced him,

  22. are there in that movie, Chariots of Fire, and I encourage you to watch it. But his enduring legacy

  23. is not mentioned in the movie. What he's really, really famous for is not mentioned in the movie at all,

  24. because it's not an Olympic gold medal. His enduring legacy is the time that he spent as a missionary

  25. and in the internment camp. Liddell became a leader and an organiser of the camp under harsh conditions.

  26. He busied himself by helping the elderly, teaching Bible classes, arranging games, teaching science to

  27. students. He was referred to as Uncle Eric. One of his fellow internees later wrote a book about his

  28. experience in that camp, and the book's called The Courtyard of the Happy Way. And he described Liddell

  29. as the finest Christian gentleman it has ever been my pleasure to meet.

  30. Another said of Liddell in his writing,

  31. it is rare indeed that a person has the good fortune to meet a saint, but he came as close to it as

  32. anyone I have ever known. Another non-Christian said that.

  33. Liddell, from the moment of his, beyond the internment camp and the end of World War II,

  34. many things have been written about him. His influence has been substantial and nothing to do

  35. with winning a gold medal.

  36. He was known by all in the internment camp as someone who gave up his life for others. Despite him

  37. having a wife and three children who had escaped to Canada, when he was given an opportunity to be

  38. released from the internment camp and to return and to go to Canada, he surrendered that opportunity

  39. to a pregnant woman. He let her go.

  40. And he stayed.

  41. His last words were,

  42. it's complete surrender.

  43. It's complete surrender.

  44. A reference to how he had completely given his life to Jesus Christ,

  45. who had completely given his life for him.

  46. It's complete surrender.

  47. The passage, which was just read out to us by Sybil this morning,

  48. is one of the most important passages in the entire Bible.

  49. And yet, in the storyline of Isaiah, these verses are a complete shock.

  50. They're unexpected.

  51. Because they subvert every human category of thought about greatness and glory and salvation.

  52. There are three surprising things.

  53. So if you've got the St. Paul's app, you'll notice them there in the titles.

  54. Surprisingly Ordinary, Surprising Suffering and Surprising Glory.

  55. That's the journey today.

  56. Open up Isaiah 53 and the St. Paul's app.

  57. Now the big shock of these verses is that by the time you get to Isaiah 53,

  58. we're expecting someone of power and greatness and majesty to come in and rescue God's people enslaved in Babylon.

  59. God's person coming to rescue his people from exile.

  60. The great divine king who we saw earlier in Isaiah is going to raise up every valley,

  61. fill in every valley and bring every mountain down low.

  62. the one who's going to have big paths straight.

  63. This great king, the one who's going to bring renewal to the whole world.

  64. We're expecting someone majestic and big and powerful.

  65. Instead, you read in verse 2,

  66. he had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him.

  67. Nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

  68. He was despised and rejected by mankind.

  69. A man of suffering.

  70. And familiar with pain.

  71. Like one from whom people hide their faces.

  72. He was despised.

  73. And we held him in low esteem.

  74. The shock of these verses is that this majestic king,

  75. this God's servant here,

  76. has none of the markers of what the world would call successful.

  77. Looks,

  78. money,

  79. connections,

  80. credentials,

  81. none of it.

  82. And yet despite that,

  83. we read in verse 1,

  84. who has believed our message,

  85. and to whom

  86. has the arm

  87. of the Lord

  88. been revealed?

  89. The arm of the Lord,

  90. in Bible talk,

  91. simply means,

  92. it's a metaphor for the power of God.

  93. This is saying that this servant,

  94. despised,

  95. held in low esteem,

  96. is God's power.

  97. God's power.

  98. And it's how God's power works

  99. in the world,

  100. and it subverts

  101. every category that we have.

  102. Every category.

  103. It's exactly what we see

  104. in the New Testament.

  105. Mark's biography

  106. of Jesus

  107. records Jesus

  108. turning up to his hometown,

  109. Nazareth.

  110. It's in Mark chapter 6.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  111. And in verse 3,

  112. it says that the people of his hometown

  113. took offense at him.

  114. Now,

  115. what's surprising about that

  116. is that Nazareth

  117. could also be called Nowhereville.

  118. You know,

  119. it's a humble little village

  120. that is hardly mentioned in history at all,

  121. and its only famous resident

  122. is Jesus.

  123. Only one.

  124. In other words,

  125. these are grassroots people

  126. who knew Jesus as a kid,

  127. and Jesus turns up,

  128. and they're offended by him.

  129. And the word translated offense

  130. in Mark chapter 6, verse 3,

    Mark 6:3

  131. means that they were scandalized by him.

  132. To be scandalized

  133. is not to disagree with him.

  134. It means to totally reject him.

  135. It means to feel hostility towards him.

  136. William Craig,

  137. sorry, not Willie Craig,

  138. William Lane,

  139. in his commentary

  140. on Mark chapter 6,

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  141. states the issue really well.

  142. Well,

  143. their discernment

  144. could not penetrate

  145. the veil

  146. of ordinariness

  147. that surrounded him.

  148. How could

  149. the long-awaited

  150. Messiah,

  151. King,

  152. Rescuer

  153. of God's people

  154. be so

  155. ordinary?

  156. Ordinary.

  157. The ordinariness

  158. of Jesus

  159. did not fit

  160. with the village

  161. of Nazareth's

  162. worldview

  163. of a triumphant

  164. Messiah.

  165. This is not

  166. who we're expecting.

  167. And in the same way,

  168. friends,

  169. the ordinariness

  170. of Jesus

  171. offends

  172. the normal

  173. moral understanding

  174. of how salvation,

  175. sorry,

  176. the normal

  177. human understanding

  178. of how salvation

  179. works in our world.

  180. All religions,

  181. all philosophical

  182. systems

  183. offer a form

  184. of salvation

  185. and liberation

  186. that is from

  187. the ordinariness

  188. of human life.

  189. It's escaping

  190. the ordinariness

  191. of human life.

  192. And it is

  193. always triumphant

  194. and it is

  195. always strong.

  196. the Christian

  197. view of salvation

  198. is unique.

  199. God

  200. comes

  201. down

  202. into

  203. our

  204. ordinariness.

  205. He doesn't

  206. lift us

  207. just from it.

  208. He immerses

  209. himself

  210. in the pain,

  211. the vulnerability,

  212. the suffering

  213. of the ordinary

  214. human life.

  215. We cannot

  216. know

  217. what the good

  218. news of

  219. Christianity

  220. is

  221. if we've

  222. never felt

  223. the offence

  224. of Jesus

  225. Christ.

  226. But we

  227. must not

  228. take offence.

  229. Matthew 11

    Matthew 11:6

  230. verse 6

  231. says,

  232. blessed is

  233. anyone who

  234. does not

  235. stumble

  236. on account

  237. of me.

  238. If we

  239. take

  240. offence

  241. at the

  242. ordinariness

  243. of Jesus,

  244. we can

  245. never know

  246. his blessing.

  247. now I

  248. know I'm

  249. taking a

  250. lot for

  251. granted

  252. when I

  253. say that

  254. and so

  255. there's

  256. an extra

  257. incentive

  258. to sign

  259. up to

  260. Alpha

  261. to discover

  262. a bit

  263. more about

  264. the Christian

  265. faith and

  266. the good

  267. news that

  268. it actually

  269. is for

  270. all of

  271. humanity.

  272. The reality

  273. is,

  274. this is how

  275. God works

  276. in all of

  277. life from

  278. beginning to

  279. end.

  280. the

  281. extraordinary

  282. power of

  283. God

  284. operates in

  285. our life

  286. in just

  287. ordinary

  288. ways.

  289. For

  290. instance,

  291. the grace

  292. and the

  293. life of

  294. God grows

  295. in our

  296. ordinary

  297. life in

  298. ordinary

  299. ways is

  300. what I'm

  301. saying.

  302. Things like

  303. daily Bible

  304. reading,

  305. daily prayer,

  306. self-examination,

  307. worship,

  308. hanging out

  309. with people

  310. who are bold

  311. enough to

  312. point you

  313. to Jesus,

  314. to encourage

  315. you to

  316. keep on

  317. keeping on,

  318. to keep you

  319. accountable for

  320. walking with

  321. Jesus week

  322. in and week

  323. out and

  324. week in and

  325. week out for

  326. years.

  327. Ordinary

  328. things that

  329. you do over

  330. and over

  331. and over

  332. again have

  333. a powerful

  334. impact on

  335. your life.

  336. So imagine

  337. for instance,

  338. I got the

  339. seed right

  340. now for

  341. a Morton

  342. Bay fig

  343. tree.

  344. If you

  345. don't know

  346. what that

  347. is, go

  348. to the

  349. Botanic

  350. Gardens

  351. or just

  352. Google it

  353. actually,

  354. there we

  355. go.

  356. Much

  357. easier to do,

  358. not now,

  359. later.

  360. Got the

  361. seed for

  362. Morton

  363. Bay fig

  364. tree.

  365. It easily

  366. fits in the

  367. palm of my

  368. hand.

  369. Now imagine

  370. if I decided

  371. right now I'm

  372. going to go to

  373. the corner of

  374. this building

  375. just outside and

  376. I'm going to

  377. get this

  378. Morton Bay fig

  379. seed and I'm

  380. going to smash

  381. this building

  382. with the seed

  383. and try and

  384. bring the

  385. building down.

  386. The seed has

  387. no power.

  388. I don't have

  389. any power.

  390. It has no

  391. power in

  392. itself.

  393. It's nothing.

  394. It's just

  395. small.

  396. It's little.

  397. However, I

  398. plant it in the

  399. corner of the

  400. building and I

  401. water it, give it

  402. some sunshine,

  403. give it time,

  404. water it, you

  405. know, fertilize the

  406. nutrients, sunshine

  407. every day.

  408. It will grow

  409. and it will

  410. grow and it

  411. will grow big

  412. enough to crumble

  413. the building.

  414. It will tear it

  415. down over the

  416. course of time.

  417. That's the

  418. extraordinary power

  419. of God's work

  420. in our lives

  421. through ordinary

  422. means again

  423. and again

  424. and again

  425. and again.

  426. Slow and

  427. ordinary growth

  428. comes through

  429. the means of

  430. grace and it's

  431. so powerful to

  432. bring about

  433. incredible

  434. transformation in

  435. life.

  436. So I want to

  437. ask you, is

  438. the arm of the

  439. Lord evidence

  440. in your life,

  441. in your habits?

  442. That's the

  443. first thing

  444. that's surprising.

  445. God's servant

  446. was so ordinary.

  447. The second

  448. thing surprising

  449. here is that

  450. God's servant

  451. suffers.

  452. How can a

  453. great triumph

  454. come through

  455. such weakness?

  456. That's not

  457. how we work

  458. in this world.

  459. Notice the

  460. words in

  461. verses 4 and

  462. 5.

  463. Pain,

  464. suffering,

  465. stricken,

  466. afflicted,

  467. pierced,

  468. crushed.

  469. The word

  470. pierced there

  471. means the

  472. most painful

  473. possible death.

  474. Then down in

  475. verse 8,

  476. taken away,

  477. cut off.

  478. The word

  479. cut off means

  480. a violent

  481. death.

  482. God's

  483. servant,

  484. Jesus Christ,

  485. suffered terribly.

  486. many people

  487. think,

  488. and just a

  489. little bit

  490. of a side

  491. point here,

  492. many people

  493. think that

  494. because they're

  495. suffering,

  496. God doesn't

  497. love them.

  498. And the

  499. only response

  500. I have to

  501. that,

  502. look at

  503. Jesus.

  504. Just look to

  505. Jesus in your

  506. suffering.

  507. God's

  508. salvation in

  509. our lives

  510. is in

  511. fact compatible

  512. with a

  513. very hard

  514. experience.

  515. His love

  516. for us is

  517. compatible with

  518. a very hard

  519. experience in

  520. life.

  521. God can be

  522. with you,

  523. love you,

  524. in you,

  525. working through

  526. you,

  527. growing you,

  528. even while you

  529. suffer terribly.

  530. But the

  531. surprising thing

  532. about the

  533. suffering of

  534. God's servant

  535. here is

  536. why he

  537. suffered.

  538. there is

  539. at least

  540. ten times

  541. in these

  542. verses

  543. that he

  544. is described

  545. as taking

  546. on things

  547. that are

  548. not his.

  549. He took

  550. up our

  551. pain,

  552. verse 4.

  553. He bore

  554. our suffering,

  555. verse 4.

  556. He was

  557. pierced for

  558. our

  559. transgressions.

  560. And again,

  561. the punishment

  562. that brought

  563. us peace

  564. was on

  565. him.

  566. Over and

  567. over again,

  568. he's taking

  569. on,

  570. taking on,

  571. taking on

  572. things that

  573. don't belong

  574. to him,

  575. that are not

  576. his.

  577. transgressions.

  578. What does

  579. all that

  580. mean?

  581. Cast your

  582. eye down

  583. to verse

  584. 12.

  585. It says,

  586. God's servant

  587. king was

  588. numbered with

  589. the transgressors.

  590. What's surprising

  591. about that is

  592. that when you

  593. read through

  594. Isaiah 53,

  595. you'd notice

  596. that he is

  597. declared to

  598. be innocent

  599. at every

  600. point.

  601. And yet

  602. here he's

  603. numbered with

  604. the transgressors.

  605. In Luke

    Luke 22:37

  606. chapter 22

  607. verse 37,

  608. Jesus

  609. quotes

  610. this verse

  611. at the end

  612. of his last

  613. supper with

  614. his disciples

  615. just moments

  616. before he's

  617. arrested and

  618. is executed.

  619. And he

  620. says,

  621. Isaiah 53

    Isaiah 53:12

  622. verse 12

  623. is about

  624. me.

  625. I'm the

  626. one who

  627. is numbered

  628. amongst the

  629. transgressors.

  630. He says

  631. this,

  632. he was

  633. numbered with

  634. the transgressors

  635. and I

  636. tell you

  637. that this

  638. must be

  639. fulfilled

  640. in me.

  641. He says

  642. this just

  643. hours before

  644. his death.

  645. Isaiah 53

    Isaiah 53:12

  646. verses 12

  647. verse 12

  648. is what

  649. is on

  650. his mind.

  651. What does

  652. it mean

  653. that he took

  654. our pain,

  655. our suffering

  656. and our

  657. punishment?

  658. to be

  659. numbered with

  660. the

  661. transgressors

  662. doesn't

  663. mean that

  664. he became

  665. a transgressor.

  666. It means

  667. that he

  668. was counted,

  669. treated as

  670. if he was

  671. a transgressor.

  672. And just

  673. hours later

  674. he was hung

  675. on a cross

  676. between two

  677. other transgressors

  678. as if

  679. he himself

  680. was one.

  681. This is the

  682. surprising thing

  683. about his

  684. suffering.

  685. He takes

  686. on what

  687. should be

  688. our

  689. suffering

  690. for our

  691. transgressing.

  692. He is

  693. treated as

  694. if he

  695. has done

  696. every

  697. single

  698. thing

  699. that we

  700. have

  701. done.

  702. What's

  703. even more

  704. surprising

  705. is that it

  706. says in

  707. verse 11

  708. that my

  709. righteous

  710. servant

  711. will justify

  712. many.

  713. So put

  714. verses 10

  715. and 11

  716. together

  717. and it's

  718. an amazing

  719. section.

  720. Verse 10

  721. said it

  722. was God's

  723. will to

  724. crush him

  725. to cause

  726. him to

  727. suffer

  728. and through

  729. the Lord

  730. make his

  731. life an

  732. offering for

  733. sin

  734. he will

  735. see his

  736. offspring

  737. which simply

  738. means he

  739. through his

  740. suffering

  741. through his

  742. death

  743. will see

  744. the results

  745. of his

  746. suffering.

  747. And then

  748. in verse

  749. 11 we

  750. read after

  751. he had

  752. suffered

  753. he will

  754. see the

  755. light of

  756. life

  757. and be

  758. satisfied

  759. by his

  760. knowledge

  761. my righteous

  762. servant

  763. will justify

  764. many.

  765. To justify

  766. someone is

  767. to make

  768. them

  769. righteous

  770. it's a

  771. legal term

  772. to declare

  773. them to

  774. be right.

  775. It is

  776. the idea

  777. once again

  778. I was up

  779. here I

  780. talked about

  781. the idea

  782. of double

  783. blessing.

  784. He had

  785. the peace

  786. but got

  787. the punishment

  788. so that we

  789. who deserve

  790. the punishment

  791. get the

  792. peace.

  793. Sin is

  794. forgiven

  795. but peace.

  796. Jesus

  797. Christ is

  798. treated by

  799. God as

  800. he has

  801. done

  802. everything

  803. all of

  804. humanity

  805. has done

  806. throughout

  807. the history

  808. of humanity

  809. so that

  810. when we

  811. put our

  812. trust in

  813. him we

  814. are treated

  815. as if we

  816. have done

  817. everything

  818. that he

  819. has done.

  820. Righteousness

  821. of life

  822. constant

  823. obedience

  824. to the

  825. father.

  826. That is

  827. the surprise

  828. that is

  829. the center

  830. that is

  831. the power

  832. that is

  833. the wonder

  834. of the

  835. Christian

  836. faith.

  837. And there

  838. is nothing

  839. like it

  840. in all

  841. of humanity.

  842. It is

  843. radically

  844. different from

  845. every other

  846. religion.

  847. Every other

  848. religion in

  849. this world

  850. is from

  851. the strong

  852. to the

  853. strong.

  854. And the

  855. basic message

  856. is if you

  857. want to

  858. be great

  859. then you

  860. summon your

  861. strength and

  862. you focus

  863. your will and

  864. you live in a

  865. particular way

  866. and eventually

  867. you'll be

  868. great.

  869. Jesus

  870. Christ died

  871. rejected and

  872. in utter

  873. weakness.

  874. He was

  875. despised.

  876. He comes

  877. in weakness

  878. and so his

  879. salvation is

  880. only ever

  881. for the

  882. weak.

  883. Salvation

  884. is a

  885. gift

  886. from the

  887. weak

  888. to the

  889. weak.

  890. God's

  891. servant

  892. in Isaiah

  893. is surprising.

  894. He is

  895. both a

  896. servant

  897. and a

  898. king

  899. just as

  900. God is

  901. both

  902. righteous

  903. and loving.

  904. God

  905. substitutes

  906. himself for

  907. us on the

  908. cross.

  909. God puts

  910. himself where

  911. we deserve

  912. to be

  913. so that

  914. now we

  915. can stand

  916. in the

  917. place of

  918. honour

  919. only he

  920. deserves to

  921. plead.

  922. And it's a

  923. place of

  924. honour,

  925. it's a

  926. place of

  927. love,

  928. it's a

  929. place of

  930. acceptance,

  931. it's a

  932. place of

  933. approval,

  934. it's a

  935. place

  936. that's

  937. guilt-free,

  938. shame-free.

  939. glory.

  940. And that's

  941. the surprising

  942. glory of

  943. this passage.

  944. God's

  945. servant is

  946. surprisingly

  947. ordinary,

  948. surprisingly

  949. suffers in

  950. weakness to

  951. make us

  952. right and

  953. strong,

  954. and this

  955. all points

  956. to a

  957. surprising

  958. glory because

  959. it's not

  960. how we

  961. would do

  962. it.

  963. Have a

  964. look again

  965. at verse

  966. 10.

  967. It was

  968. the Lord's

  969. will to

  970. crush him

  971. and to

  972. cause him

  973. to suffer

  974. and through

  975. the Lord

  976. make his

  977. life

  978. and offering

  979. for sin.

  980. He will

  981. see his

  982. offspring

  983. and prolong

  984. his days

  985. and the

  986. will of

  987. the Lord

  988. will prosper

  989. in his

  990. hand.

  991. And then

  992. in verse

  993. 11 it

  994. says,

  995. he will

  996. see the

  997. light of

  998. life and

  999. be satisfied.

  1000. What's

  1001. happening in

  1002. verse 11 is

  1003. that it's

  1004. completing the

  1005. full circle

  1006. of this

  1007. poem,

  1008. which began

  1009. in 52,

  1010. verse 13,

  1011. where it

  1012. says about

  1013. God's

  1014. servant that

  1015. he will be

  1016. raised,

  1017. he will be

  1018. lifted up

  1019. and highly

  1020. exalted.

  1021. That is,

  1022. it's a

  1023. reference to

  1024. the cross

  1025. and the

  1026. resurrection

  1027. and the

  1028. ascension of

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. He will be

  1031. raised up on a

  1032. cross,

  1033. dying for the

  1034. sin of

  1035. humanity

  1036. and he

  1037. will be

  1038. highly

  1039. praised,

  1040. exalted,

  1041. honoured.

  1042. Now we've

  1043. seen this

  1044. language before

  1045. in Isaiah,

  1046. the idea of

  1047. being high

  1048. and exalted.

  1049. We've seen it

  1050. before.

  1051. You all

  1052. remember the

  1053. very first

  1054. message in

  1055. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  1056. 6, several

  1057. months ago,

  1058. I'm sure.

  1059. But it's

  1060. there in

  1061. Isaiah 6,

  1062. when Isaiah

  1063. is commissioned,

  1064. he gets a

  1065. glimpse of the

  1066. throne room of

  1067. God and he

  1068. says, I

  1069. saw the

  1070. Lord high

  1071. and exalted

  1072. seated on

  1073. a throne.

  1074. He sees the

  1075. God of the

  1076. universe on a

  1077. throne and

  1078. it's saying

  1079. here that this

  1080. suffering servant

  1081. is the God

  1082. of the

  1083. universe,

  1084. seated on

  1085. a throne.

  1086. What's even

  1087. more remarkable

  1088. is if you

  1089. read through

  1090. John chapter

    John 12 chapter mention

  1091. 12,

  1092. John says,

  1093. Isaiah was

  1094. gazing on

  1095. Jesus Christ.

  1096. Isaiah saw

  1097. Jesus on the

  1098. throne.

  1099. At the

  1100. cross,

  1101. humanity

  1102. passed its

  1103. verdict on

  1104. Jesus and

  1105. its verdict was

  1106. rejection and

  1107. condemnation,

  1108. but the cross

  1109. is not the

  1110. end of it.

  1111. That's what

  1112. this verse is

  1113. saying in

  1114. 52 verse

  1115. 13.

  1116. The cross

  1117. is not the

  1118. end.

  1119. Jesus

  1120. Christ,

  1121. the Son of

  1122. God,

  1123. became human,

  1124. lived a

  1125. perfect life,

  1126. a perfect

  1127. life,

  1128. but to us

  1129. humanity,

  1130. he was

  1131. ordinary,

  1132. he was

  1133. despised,

  1134. rejected,

  1135. he was

  1136. disfigured,

  1137. beyond

  1138. recognition,

  1139. he was

  1140. placed in

  1141. a grave.

  1142. That was

  1143. our verdict

  1144. on him

  1145. and then

  1146. God's

  1147. verdict came.

  1148. And he

  1149. brings him

  1150. powerfully

  1151. from death.

  1152. Resurrection

  1153. is God's

  1154. vindication.

  1155. This is

  1156. my

  1157. suffering

  1158. servant

  1159. for

  1160. humanity

  1161. and he

  1162. is high

  1163. and he

  1164. is exalted

  1165. and he

  1166. is honoured

  1167. and he

  1168. is lifted

  1169. up

  1170. at the

  1171. right hand

  1172. of the

  1173. Father in

  1174. heaven.

  1175. And the

  1176. world

  1177. falls

  1178. silent

  1179. as Jesus

  1180. is vindicated

  1181. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 52:15

  1182. 52 verse

  1183. 15.

  1184. The cross

  1185. of Christ

  1186. looks like

  1187. a failed

  1188. plan or

  1189. a pointless

  1190. gesture,

  1191. but is the

  1192. power and

  1193. the wisdom

  1194. of God.

  1195. As the

  1196. Apostle Paul

  1197. writes in

  1198. 1 Corinthians

  1199. 1,

  1200. Jews demand

  1201. signs for

  1202. the wisdom,

  1203. but we

  1204. preach Christ

  1205. crucify the

  1206. power and

  1207. the wisdom

  1208. of God.

  1209. substitutionary

  1210. sacrifice

  1211. is the

  1212. surprising

  1213. glory

  1214. of his

  1215. work.

  1216. And it

  1217. is the

  1218. surprising

  1219. glory of

  1220. the Christian

  1221. life.

  1222. In other

  1223. words,

  1224. you want

  1225. to be

  1226. great

  1227. in life?

  1228. Why

  1229. shoot for

  1230. an Olympic

  1231. gold?

  1232. Give up

  1233. your life

  1234. for others

  1235. and you

  1236. will be

  1237. great.

  1238. That's the

  1239. surprising

  1240. glory of

  1241. the Christian

  1242. life.

  1243. A life

  1244. of substitutionary

  1245. sacrifice is

  1246. the Christian

  1247. life.

  1248. And it

  1249. happens in

  1250. all of

  1251. life.

  1252. It's there

  1253. right through

  1254. all of

  1255. life.

  1256. Let's

  1257. take the

  1258. example of

  1259. parenting.

  1260. I'm glad

  1261. that James

  1262. and Sybil

  1263. rose this

  1264. one.

  1265. I mean,

  1266. unbeknownst

  1267. to them.

  1268. Let's

  1269. take the

  1270. example of

  1271. parenting.

  1272. A child

  1273. comes into

  1274. your life

  1275. and all

  1276. of a

  1277. sudden

  1278. you

  1279. experience

  1280. how much

  1281. they hamper

  1282. your

  1283. personal

  1284. freedom.

  1285. How much

  1286. they get

  1287. in the

  1288. way of

  1289. your

  1290. life.

  1291. There

  1292. are all

  1293. sorts of

  1294. things you

  1295. used to be

  1296. able to

  1297. do but

  1298. you can't

  1299. do to

  1300. the same

  1301. degree.

  1302. Travel,

  1303. career

  1304. advancement,

  1305. social life.

  1306. life.

  1307. This is

  1308. particularly

  1309. a conflict

  1310. for the

  1311. Westerner

  1312. who deeply

  1313. values

  1314. personal

  1315. and individual

  1316. freedom,

  1317. which is

  1318. why so

  1319. many

  1320. Westerners

  1321. are getting

  1322. a dog

  1323. rather than

  1324. a child.

  1325. if you

  1326. make a

  1327. choice

  1328. to hold

  1329. onto your

  1330. freedom

  1331. and go

  1332. down the

  1333. road of

  1334. selfishness,

  1335. then that

  1336. child will

  1337. grow up

  1338. with all

  1339. kinds of

  1340. insecurities.

  1341. insecurities.

  1342. All kinds

  1343. of

  1344. insecurities.

  1345. There is a

  1346. sense where

  1347. they will

  1348. themselves

  1349. grow up

  1350. and be

  1351. enslaved to

  1352. their own

  1353. complex

  1354. brokenness

  1355. if the

  1356. parents

  1357. are under

  1358. their

  1359. freedom.

  1360. On the

  1361. other hand,

  1362. if you give

  1363. up your

  1364. freedom as

  1365. the way a

  1366. parent should,

  1367. then the

  1368. child will

  1369. grow up

  1370. stable,

  1371. responsible,

  1372. free.

  1373. And when

  1374. they do,

  1375. the parent

  1376. will discover

  1377. a new

  1378. kind of

  1379. freedom.

  1380. A freedom

  1381. that comes

  1382. from a

  1383. relationship

  1384. with a

  1385. child who's

  1386. grown up

  1387. to become

  1388. a stable

  1389. contributing

  1390. adult to

  1391. society.

  1392. The freedom

  1393. that comes

  1394. from the

  1395. richness of

  1396. family life,

  1397. transparency

  1398. in relationship.

  1399. See the

  1400. point?

  1401. The point

  1402. is, it's

  1403. either you

  1404. or them.

  1405. Substitutionary

  1406. sacrifice.

  1407. It's either

  1408. you or

  1409. them.

  1410. All real

  1411. love, all

  1412. real love

  1413. is weakening

  1414. yourself to

  1415. strengthen the

  1416. other, but

  1417. it results in

  1418. the giver

  1419. getting a

  1420. new strength

  1421. that they

  1422. could not

  1423. have otherwise.

  1424. There is a

  1425. freedom in

  1426. that.

  1427. Take another

  1428. example.

  1429. You've got

  1430. wealth.

  1431. What I mean

  1432. is that you've

  1433. got money and

  1434. you've got assets

  1435. that mean

  1436. that you've

  1437. got some

  1438. power to

  1439. make choices

  1440. in your

  1441. life.

  1442. That's what

  1443. I mean by

  1444. wealth.

  1445. I don't

  1446. mean whether

  1447. you're on

  1448. the BRW

  1449. rich 200

  1450. list.

  1451. You've got

  1452. power to

  1453. make choices

  1454. in your

  1455. life.

  1456. That's the

  1457. definition of

  1458. wealth.

  1459. And you

  1460. might not

  1461. feel that

  1462. you're

  1463. wealthy,

  1464. but you've

  1465. got power

  1466. to make

  1467. choices.

  1468. You have

  1469. choices.

  1470. And you

  1471. can hold

  1472. on to all

  1473. of your

  1474. money,

  1475. all of your

  1476. time,

  1477. and all

  1478. of your

  1479. power for

  1480. yourself in

  1481. such a way

  1482. that you

  1483. become enslaved

  1484. to it.

  1485. And you

  1486. will perish

  1487. with it in

  1488. poverty.

  1489. You will

  1490. perish with

  1491. it in

  1492. poverty.

  1493. Or, on the

  1494. other hand,

  1495. you can give

  1496. up your

  1497. riches in

  1498. various ways.

  1499. You can

  1500. start to

  1501. share your

  1502. wealth and

  1503. your power

  1504. and your

  1505. choices and

  1506. invest your

  1507. time and

  1508. your money

  1509. charitably

  1510. towards others

  1511. and you

  1512. can use

  1513. your wealth

  1514. either to

  1515. hold on to

  1516. your power,

  1517. you will

  1518. always be

  1519. weak,

  1520. or to

  1521. give up

  1522. your wealth

  1523. to empower

  1524. others and

  1525. you'll start

  1526. to discover

  1527. a new and

  1528. real wealth,

  1529. something that

  1530. liberates and

  1531. frees.

  1532. When Jesus

  1533. gave himself

  1534. away to

  1535. win us,

  1536. he then

  1537. got the

  1538. name that

  1539. is above

  1540. every other

  1541. name.

  1542. Not

  1543. before.

  1544. Not

  1545. before.

  1546. He deserves

  1547. far more

  1548. honor for

  1549. having lost

  1550. his honor.

  1551. In

  1552. closing,

  1553. at the

  1554. end of

  1555. his book,

  1556. Mere

  1557. Christianity,

  1558. C.S.

  1559. Lewis,

  1560. sums up the

  1561. Christian life

  1562. just beautifully.

  1563. It's the

  1564. very last

  1565. page.

  1566. Let me

  1567. quote him.

  1568. The principle

  1569. runs through

  1570. all of life

  1571. from top

  1572. to bottom.

  1573. Give up

  1574. yourself and

  1575. you will find

  1576. your true

  1577. self.

  1578. Lose your

  1579. life and

  1580. you will

  1581. save it.

  1582. Submit to

  1583. death,

  1584. death of

  1585. your ambitions

  1586. and favorite

  1587. wishes every

  1588. day and

  1589. death of

  1590. your whole

  1591. body in

  1592. the end.

  1593. Submit with

  1594. every fiber

  1595. of your

  1596. being and

  1597. you will

  1598. find eternal

  1599. life.

  1600. Keep back

  1601. nothing.

  1602. Nothing that

  1603. you have not

  1604. given away will

  1605. ever really be

  1606. truly yours.

  1607. Nothing that

  1608. has not died

  1609. will ever be

  1610. raised from

  1611. the dead.

  1612. Look for

  1613. yourself and

  1614. you will find

  1615. in the long

  1616. run only

  1617. hatred,

  1618. loneliness,

  1619. despair,

  1620. rage,

  1621. ruin and

  1622. decay.

  1623. But look

  1624. for Jesus

  1625. Christ and

  1626. you will find

  1627. him and

  1628. with him

  1629. every other

  1630. thing thrown

  1631. in as well.

  1632. What a way

  1633. to finish a

  1634. book.

  1635. Mere

  1636. Christianity

  1637. by C.S.

  1638. Lewis.

  1639. And so

  1640. I wonder

  1641. friends,

  1642. can you

  1643. say

  1644. with Eric

  1645. Liddell

  1646. at the

  1647. point of

  1648. death,

  1649. it's

  1650. complete

  1651. surrender.

  1652. It's

  1653. complete

  1654. surrender.

  1655. what might

  1656. be your

  1657. next step

  1658. to

  1659. weaken

  1660. yourself

  1661. that

  1662. others

  1663. might

  1664. be

  1665. strong.

  1666. Thank you.

  1667. Thank you.

  1668. I can't

  1669. that

  1670. quartet

  1671. matter

  1672. season

  1673. so

  1674. I he's

  1675. estoy

  1676. loving

  1677. away

  1678. and

  1679. giving me

  1680. have many

  1681. them to

  1682. work

  1683. there's

  1684. maybe

  1685. to

  1686. l

  1687. has

  1688. been

  1689. there's
