  1. we are today drawing to a close our series, Generous God.

  2. The thrust of this series has been that God's generosity to us

  3. in the Lord Jesus Christ produces a life of generosity,

  4. pervasive generosity, generosity in all areas of life,

  5. generosity with our time, with our talents, treasures,

  6. our testimony, with our relationships, hospitality,

  7. with forgiveness, all of life, all of life.

  8. And one of the challenges has been is that it's possible to be generous

  9. in one area of life without being generous in another area of life.

  10. It's quite possibly generous here but stingy over here.

  11. It's possible to give away large portions of our finances and assets

  12. while not willing to serve in a ministry.

  13. What that tells us is that our time is more valuable to us

  14. than anything else.

  15. or to not draw close to others,

  16. not to spend time but to share our hearts,

  17. to share our emotions, our feelings,

  18. because our privacy is more valuable to us

  19. than our time or our possessions.

  20. The radical generosity of God to us in Jesus Christ,

  21. it is a holistic salvation,

  22. produces a holistic, pervasive generosity

  23. in all of life of those who follow him.

  24. Radical generosity is so much more than money

  25. but it's not less than what we do with our money.

  26. That's why we've not really focused on the issue of money

  27. in this entire series right through,

  28. I dabbled in a little bit earlier on,

  29. but right through this whole term,

  30. we've not really touched on the issue of money

  31. until right today, right at the end.

  32. Because I didn't want you to think it was all just about money.

  33. And I know you've been busting,

  34. waiting for the money one to come.

  35. And so here it is today,

  36. just to complete the whole series for you.

  37. Now, why are we doing it right now?

  38. Why are we doing it?

  39. There's three reasons I want to talk about money.

  40. Number one, it's because I actually want us to celebrate today.

  41. While we have had,

  42. and you've been aware of this in communications,

  43. we've had some significant financial challenges

  44. this year as a church,

  45. due to the childcare centre not coming off earlier this year.

  46. and we've, however,

  47. continued to give as a church,

  48. which has been fantastic.

  49. Back in 2014,

  50. can't believe it was only 10 years ago,

  51. part of the funding to redevelop our entire site here

  52. was for us to take out a mortgage

  53. of about a bit over $400,000.

  54. We started this year

  55. with about $93,000 or so left to pay off on that mortgage.

  56. As of the end of last month,

  57. that is entirely paid off.

  58. St. Paul's is now debt-free

  59. for the first time since 2014.

  60. That's a celebration moment.

  61. That is a phenomenal effort.

  62. So as I talk about money today,

  63. I'm talking about it with a heart of celebration for us as a church.

  64. I think it's a phenomenal response that we've had this year.

  65. Secondly,

  66. I want to talk about money

  67. because in Luke's gospel,

  68. Jesus talks about money, possessions, greed, and wealth,

  69. a whole lot.

  70. One third of his parables in Luke

  71. are about this issue.

  72. He warns of the dangers

  73. and what it looks like to have a life of pervasive generosity.

  74. So Jesus talked about it

  75. and we want to talk about it.

  76. Thirdly,

  77. crucially,

  78. our perspective on money and possessions and wealth

  79. and how we handle them

  80. lie at the very heart of the Christian life.

  81. At the very heart of the Christian life,

  82. at the very center,

  83. the core of the Christian life.

  84. If you think that's an overstatement,

  85. it is not.

  86. I'm not using hyperbole here.

  87. The Bible emphatically demonstrates

  88. that what we do with our finances

  89. significantly influences eternity.

  90. Not just to other people's,

  91. yours.

  92. God has recorded in the Bible

  93. everything we need to know

  94. about his investment priorities,

  95. his high standard of management

  96. and the rewards he offers

  97. his faithful stewards.

  98. The issue of riches and wealth and money

  99. come up again and again and again

  100. as Jesus takes his journey towards Jerusalem.

  101. And as he draws near to Jerusalem,

  102. he's asked a question by a man known for centuries

  103. as the rich young ruler,

  104. which is our text this morning.

  105. And with this interaction with Jesus,

  106. there are three things to learn about money,

  107. wealth and possessions.

  108. And if you've got the St. Paul's app in front of you,

  109. I'd encourage you to open it up

  110. and you see the three points there in front of you.

  111. And the first one that he highlights

  112. is the danger of money and wealth.

  113. And that's our first point.

  114. We see it in the middle of the passage.

  115. We're at Luke 18.

  116. So I open that up if you haven't got it in front of you.

  117. Luke 18 verse 24.

    Luke 18:24

  118. Jesus looks right at this rich young man

  119. and he says to him,

  120. how hard it is for the rich

  121. to enter the kingdom of God.

  122. Indeed, it is easier for a camel

  123. to go through the eye of a needle

  124. than for someone who is rich

  125. to enter the kingdom of God.

  126. Now, John touched on this last week.

  127. He strayed into my passage, unfortunately,

  128. but that's okay.

  129. I'm not correcting him on anything that he said.

  130. I'm just gonna remind you of what he said

  131. because it's so essential.

  132. Jesus is using the metaphor of impossibility.

  133. The camel was the largest land animal

  134. the people knew at that time.

  135. The eye of the needle was the smallest hole.

  136. It is impossible, in other words,

  137. he's saying here.

  138. It is impossible for the rich to get into heaven.

  139. Now, as I was writing this out,

  140. the richest person in the world at that time

  141. had a personal fortune of $251 billion.

  142. I don't know if it's gone up or down since then,

  143. but it probably doesn't matter to him a whole lot.

  144. I personally do not appear on any of the published rich lists.

  145. And yet, when Jesus says this,

  146. he's talking to me.

  147. He's talking to you.

  148. Everyone sitting in this room here,

  149. he's talking to us.

  150. He is saying that it is easier for a camel

  151. to go through the eye of a needle

  152. than it is for us

  153. to get into heaven.

  154. Notice the reaction of those who are listening to this.

  155. Verse 26.

  156. Well, who then can be saved?

  157. You see, the disciples were confused by this

  158. because in their culture, their day and age,

  159. they thought it was the rich ones

  160. who were particularly blessed by God.

  161. Everything they had came from God.

  162. So it must have been God

  163. who had obviously particularly blessed them

  164. because of their righteousness

  165. or in some way.

  166. And Jesus' response here is,

  167. what is impossible with men

  168. is possible with God.

  169. Notice Jesus did not say,

  170. what is impossible for rich people,

  171. it's possible with God.

  172. He says, what's impossible with men

  173. is impossible.

  174. In other words,

  175. what is impossible for all people,

  176. it's possible for God.

  177. He's saying,

  178. all salvation is a miracle.

  179. It is impossible for anyone

  180. to save themselves

  181. because as Romans 3 tells us,

  182. all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  183. It's not possible for anyone

  184. to save themselves

  185. except for God intervening

  186. and doing the impossible.

  187. Now, the reason why Jesus raises that issue here

  188. is because the same thing

  189. that makes salvation impossible for all of us

  190. is made worse

  191. by wealth, money and possessions.

  192. In the Old Testament book of Proverbs,

  193. it's a great book

  194. if you have never read it,

  195. it's about,

  196. really about primarily concerned

  197. with how to navigate life

  198. in God's world well.

  199. The Proverbs talks a lot about money

  200. and it talks,

  201. it's particularly got two very important things

  202. to say

  203. about the spiritual power of money.

  204. Firstly,

  205. it says that money has the power

  206. to distract you

  207. from what's important in life.

  208. Distracted enough

  209. so that you actually don't ask

  210. the really important questions of life

  211. or why am I here

  212. and what am I really meant to accomplish in life?

  213. In fact,

  214. it can even be so distracting

  215. for Christians

  216. that they don't think

  217. about the deeper issues of life.

  218. What are my priorities?

  219. What is my next step?

  220. Proverbs 11 verse 4 says,

    Proverbs 11:4

  221. wealth is worthless

  222. in the day of wrath

  223. but righteousness delivers from death.

  224. What that's saying there is

  225. money can't help you.

  226. It can't save you.

  227. When the troubles of life hit,

  228. it can't help you.

  229. It does try to give you

  230. some sort of a delusion

  231. into think that if you've got enough money,

  232. it will help you in those moments.

  233. I get the cancer diagnosis,

  234. I've got enough money,

  235. I can go to the best doctors

  236. to try and get that solved.

  237. I've got a leg up there.

  238. Get myself in trouble with the law,

  239. got enough money,

  240. I can hire the best barristers

  241. to get me out of trouble.

  242. It gives you the illusion

  243. that it will keep you safe.

  244. But you're not safe.

  245. You're not safe from grief,

  246. from bereavement,

  247. from illness,

  248. from disaster.

  249. Ironically,

  250. you're not even safe

  251. from financial ruin

  252. if you've got lots of money.

  253. Money can't stop death,

  254. it can't stop tragedy,

  255. heartbreak,

  256. and when it comes,

  257. if you've spent your life

  258. pursuing it,

  259. trusting in it,

  260. living for it,

  261. it won't give you anything back.

  262. Money has the power

  263. to distract us

  264. from the important questions

  265. of life.

  266. The second thing

  267. that Proverbs says

  268. about money

  269. is it distorts

  270. your self-image.

  271. In Proverbs 30,

    Proverbs 30:8

  272. verses 8 and 9,

  273. it says,

  274. give me neither poverty

  275. nor riches,

  276. but give me only

  277. my daily bread,

  278. otherwise I will have

  279. too much

  280. and disown you

  281. and say,

  282. who is the Lord?

  283. To see a person

  284. humbled under prosperity,

  285. to see a person

  286. humbled under prosperity

  287. would have to be

  288. one of the greatest

  289. rarities in the world.

  290. In fact,

  291. I remember reading once,

  292. someone said,

  293. it's amazing how

  294. the wealthy self-made person

  295. becomes an expert

  296. at everything

  297. in life.

  298. Not just their area

  299. of expertise,

  300. but everything

  301. in life.

  302. Only the self-made

  303. wealthy person

  304. seems to have

  305. that problem.

  306. It puts the person

  307. into a place

  308. where they say,

  309. who is God?

  310. Why do I need him?

  311. That's the danger

  312. of wealth.

  313. So why is it so dangerous?

  314. We're going to go back

  315. to the beginning

  316. of this passage

  317. and unpack

  318. the second point,

  319. why wealth

  320. is so dangerous

  321. for us.

  322. So again,

  323. Luke 18,

    Luke 18:18

  324. verse 18.

  325. A certain ruler

  326. asked him,

  327. good teacher,

  328. what must I do

  329. to inherit eternal life?

  330. Why do you call me

  331. good?

  332. Jesus answered,

  333. no one is good

  334. except God alone.

  335. You know the commandments,

  336. you shall not commit adultery,

  337. you shall not murder,

  338. you shall not steal,

  339. you shall not give false testimony.

  340. Honor your father

  341. and your mother,

  342. all these I have kept

  343. since I was a boy,

  344. he said.

  345. Now,

  346. when we read that,

  347. we should be shocked.

  348. We should be shocked

  349. by Jesus' answer

  350. to the question,

  351. what must I do

  352. to inherit eternal life?

  353. Because it appears,

  354. in fact,

  355. not just appears,

  356. it's what Jesus says,

  357. obey the Ten Commandments.

  358. We should be shocked

  359. by that.

  360. The implication is

  361. that's how on earth

  362. you get salvation.

  363. Be good

  364. is what Jesus says.

  365. This should shock us

  366. because immediately

  367. before this,

  368. Jesus tells the story

  369. the Pharisee

  370. and the tax collector

  371. where the obedient

  372. religious man

  373. went home

  374. not saved.

  375. But the sinner

  376. is saved.

  377. So,

  378. what's Jesus do?

  379. I mean,

  380. come on Jesus.

  381. Why did you not

  382. just pull out

  383. two ways to live?

  384. You know,

  385. take the guy

  386. through Alpha

  387. for goodness sake.

  388. Why say that?

  389. Why did he not say,

  390. I am on my way

  391. to Jerusalem

  392. to die on a cross

  393. to pay a ransom

  394. to take the penalty

  395. that you deserve

  396. for your sin

  397. and if you put

  398. your trust in me

  399. you'll have eternal life

  400. and salvation.

  401. Why did he not say that?

  402. Given it's consistent

  403. with the New Testament

  404. and everything else he said.

  405. that's because

  406. to say to this young man

  407. I've come to die

  408. for your sins

  409. would have been

  410. incomprehensible

  411. to him.

  412. Like most people

  413. he didn't think

  414. he had a problem.

  415. His culture told him

  416. he didn't have a problem.

  417. Look at what he says

  418. in verse 21.

  419. All these I've kept

  420. since I was a boy.

  421. In other words

  422. I don't need

  423. a rescuer.

  424. I'm a good person.

  425. I may not be perfect

  426. but I don't need

  427. a rescuer.

  428. So what Jesus is doing

  429. in his response here

  430. is he's trying

  431. to target the heart.

  432. He's trying to dig deeper

  433. into this man's heart.

  434. Deep down

  435. despite his goodness

  436. he must have been

  437. feeling unsettled

  438. in some way.

  439. That something

  440. wasn't right.

  441. something was missing.

  442. Otherwise why would he

  443. come to Jesus

  444. with a question

  445. in the first place?

  446. It's understandable

  447. really his predicament.

  448. If we think

  449. that we can get

  450. right with God

  451. by being good

  452. we will always

  453. feel insecure.

  454. Even those

  455. who project

  456. an image

  457. that they've got

  458. it all together

  459. on the outside

  460. deep down

  461. on the inside

  462. they know better.

  463. We know better too.

  464. We all know better.

  465. We know the things

  466. that we've done.

  467. We know the things

  468. that we've thought.

  469. We know the things

  470. that we

  471. would work

  472. our entire life

  473. to hide

  474. from everyone else

  475. so that they

  476. do not see

  477. the true us.

  478. The things

  479. that we cannot hide

  480. from our own

  481. consciences.

  482. Jesus is reminding

  483. this man

  484. that his first

  485. and his fundamental

  486. problem

  487. is that he

  488. is in fact

  489. not good

  490. at all.

  491. No mere

  492. mortal

  493. is.

  494. And then

  495. Jesus starts

  496. to prime

  497. us to show

  498. him where

  499. he's not good.

  500. Verse 22

  501. when Jesus

  502. heard this

  503. he said to him

  504. you still lack

  505. just one thing

  506. wouldn't that be great

  507. just one thing.

  508. Sell everything

  509. you have

  510. give to the poor

  511. and you will have

  512. treasure in heaven

  513. and then come

  514. follow me.

  515. should be crucial

  516. to point out

  517. again that

  518. Jesus has

  519. never

  520. never

  521. suggested

  522. to another

  523. individual

  524. that the way

  525. to be saved

  526. is to give away

  527. all of your money

  528. to the poor.

  529. He's never done

  530. that before

  531. and never does

  532. it after this.

  533. He's doing it

  534. here

  535. as a brilliant

  536. strategy

  537. to help

  538. this young

  539. man see

  540. that he

  541. has a need

  542. of rescuing.

  543. he targets

  544. his heart

  545. his idol

  546. is what he

  547. does

  548. the core

  549. of his life

  550. that he's

  551. living for

  552. the thing

  553. that he's

  554. looking to

  555. to ultimately

  556. make him

  557. approachable

  558. to God

  559. or God

  560. to like him

  561. in some way.

  562. You see

  563. money for him

  564. is not just

  565. a tool

  566. it's his

  567. scorecard

  568. it's his

  569. security

  570. it's his

  571. hope

  572. this is

  573. the thing

  574. that he's

  575. squeezing

  576. God

  577. out of

  578. his life

  579. and when

  580. Jesus

  581. presses him

  582. on this

  583. one issue

  584. he finally

  585. sees that

  586. in fact

  587. he's not

  588. obeying

  589. the commandments

  590. at all

  591. he can't

  592. even get

  593. past the

  594. first one

  595. you must

  596. have no

  597. other gods

  598. before me

  599. his money

  600. was his

  601. God

  602. because he

  603. walks away

  604. sad

  605. refusing to

  606. surrender it

  607. and that

  608. puts Jesus

  609. up

  610. where he

  611. puts money

  612. up as the

  613. alternative

  614. God

  615. he could have

  616. used a whole

  617. range of

  618. things but he

  619. only ever

  620. puts money

  621. up as the

  622. alternative

  623. God

  624. you cannot

  625. serve both

  626. God and

  627. money

  628. you're devoted

  629. to one

  630. or the

  631. other

  632. but it

  633. can't be

  634. both

  635. that

  636. is why

  637. wealth

  638. is so

  639. so

  640. dangerous

  641. which brings

  642. me to the

  643. last point

  644. how do you

  645. therefore

  646. escape

  647. the danger

  648. my landing

  649. point here

  650. is you

  651. escape the

  652. danger

  653. through a

  654. life of

  655. radical

  656. generosity

  657. the first

  658. thing

  659. to escape

  660. the danger

  661. is to

  662. assume

  663. that you

  664. are in

  665. denial

  666. just

  667. assume

  668. it

  669. Jesus

  670. is so

  671. blunt

  672. with this

  673. guy

  674. because he

  675. was in

  676. denial

  677. and that's

  678. the very

  679. nature of

  680. addiction

  681. the very

  682. nature of

  683. addiction

  684. is that

  685. you're

  686. in

  687. I'm not

  688. addicted

  689. I don't

  690. have a

  691. problem

  692. I've got

  693. it under

  694. control

  695. the first

  696. thing that we

  697. need to do

  698. is to

  699. assume

  700. that we're

  701. under the

  702. influence

  703. especially

  704. living in

  705. a society

  706. that is

  707. deeply

  708. deeply

  709. committed

  710. to

  711. materialism

  712. where

  713. your

  714. personal

  715. scorecard

  716. is

  717. your

  718. assets

  719. your net

  720. worth

  721. is your

  722. self-worth

  723. that's

  724. our

  725. materialistic

  726. culture

  727. so assume

  728. that you

  729. are marinating

  730. in that

  731. culture

  732. all the

  733. time

  734. and it

  735. is

  736. having a

  737. significant

  738. influence

  739. on your

  740. priorities

  741. assume

  742. that the

  743. amount

  744. of money

  745. that you

  746. think

  747. you need

  748. is more

  749. than what

  750. you really

  751. need

  752. and assume

  753. also that the

  754. amount of

  755. money that you

  756. think you can

  757. give away

  758. is less

  759. than what you

  760. actually really

  761. can give away

  762. assume both of

  763. those things

  764. assume it

  765. the bible

  766. says that

  767. money makes

  768. us blind

  769. in a way

  770. that other

  771. sins don't

  772. no one

  773. commits adultery

  774. and doesn't

  775. realise that's

  776. what they're

  777. doing

  778. they know

  779. exactly what

  780. they're doing

  781. but not

  782. when it

  783. comes to

  784. money

  785. we're

  786. blind

  787. to this

  788. issue

  789. the second

  790. way to

  791. escape

  792. and the

  793. key way

  794. to escape

  795. the danger

  796. of wealth

  797. is to look

  798. to the rich

  799. young ruler

  800. as your

  801. hope

  802. your salvation

  803. and your

  804. motivation

  805. salvation

  806. why would

  807. you do

  808. that

  809. when this

  810. rich young

  811. ruler walks

  812. away

  813. and rejects

  814. Jesus

  815. why would

  816. we look

  817. to him

  818. for our

  819. hope and

  820. our salvation

  821. well it's

  822. because I'm

  823. not referring

  824. to him

  825. I'm referring

  826. to the other

  827. rich young

  828. ruler in

  829. this passage

  830. there's two

  831. of them

  832. Jesus is

  833. around 30

  834. to 32

  835. when he

  836. is headed

  837. to Jerusalem

  838. the bible

  839. says that he

  840. existed with

  841. God for all

  842. of eternity

  843. he's the

  844. God who

  845. made

  846. everything

  847. he's the

  848. God who

  849. rules

  850. everything

  851. he's the

  852. God who

  853. owns

  854. everything

  855. sustains

  856. everything

  857. and he

  858. left that

  859. came from

  860. heaven to

  861. identify with

  862. the spiritual

  863. poverty of

  864. humanity

  865. he is on

  866. the way to

  867. Jerusalem to

  868. die on a

  869. cross

  870. and into

  871. a poverty

  872. deeper

  873. than any

  874. human being

  875. has ever

  876. ever experienced

  877. in the entire

  878. history of

  879. humanity

  880. he will know

  881. and experience

  882. a humanity

  883. deeper than

  884. anyone has

  885. ever experienced

  886. he will

  887. experience the

  888. abandonment

  889. and loss

  890. like no one

  891. has ever

  892. experienced

  893. he will be

  894. stripped of

  895. everything

  896. including his

  897. life

  898. life

  899. and what

  900. he has

  901. done for

  902. us

  903. 2 Corinthians

  904. verses

  905. chapter 8

  906. verse 9

  907. puts in

  908. economic terms

  909. for us

  910. for you know

  911. the grace of

  912. our Lord Jesus

  913. Christ

  914. that though he

  915. was rich

  916. yet for your

  917. sake he

  918. became poor

  919. so that you

  920. through his

  921. poverty

  922. might become

  923. rich

  924. he was drained

  925. of all riches

  926. chose to do

  927. that so that

  928. we

  929. though we

  930. are spiritually

  931. poor and

  932. bankrupt can

  933. receive the

  934. abundance of

  935. his riches

  936. his bank

  937. account has

  938. been swapped

  939. with ours

  940. in Jesus we

  941. get adoption

  942. into God's

  943. family

  944. forgiveness

  945. we get

  946. pardoned

  947. we get

  948. eternal life

  949. it is the

  950. only wealth

  951. that makes us

  952. truly secure

  953. even in and

  954. beyond death

  955. and so we

  956. need to look to

  957. the true

  958. rich young

  959. ruler

  960. the true

  961. rich young

  962. ruler

  963. until we

  964. get excited

  965. excited over

  966. what he has

  967. achieved for

  968. us

  969. what he has

  970. gifted to

  971. us

  972. this is what

  973. this series on

  974. generous God

  975. has been all

  976. about from

  977. start to

  978. finish

  979. it's been

  980. about the

  981. gospel

  982. the good

  983. news of

  984. Jesus Christ

  985. look to the

  986. glorious news

  987. of God's

  988. grace and

  989. riches to us

  990. in the Lord

  991. Jesus Christ

  992. until it

  993. drains all

  994. the power

  995. out of

  996. money and

  997. possessions

  998. until it

  999. no longer

  1000. becomes your

  1001. scorecard

  1002. until it

  1003. just merely

  1004. is currency

  1005. it is no

  1006. longer your

  1007. security and

  1008. your self

  1009. esteem

  1010. your hope

  1011. your salvation

  1012. salvation

  1013. and so that

  1014. leads me to

  1015. the third

  1016. thing that

  1017. we need to

  1018. do to

  1019. escape

  1020. and that

  1021. is a

  1022. life of

  1023. radical

  1024. generosity

  1025. have a

  1026. plan to

  1027. use your

  1028. wealth with

  1029. purpose

  1030. to use it

  1031. with eternity

  1032. in mind

  1033. as stewards

  1034. of God's

  1035. resources

  1036. and I got

  1037. four steps

  1038. here very

  1039. quickly

  1040. four steps

  1041. number one

  1042. investigate

  1043. what percentage

  1044. of your

  1045. income you're

  1046. currently giving

  1047. away

  1048. how much

  1049. goes to

  1050. Christian

  1051. ministry and

  1052. charity

  1053. Christian

  1054. ministry to

  1055. help people

  1056. out of

  1057. spiritual

  1058. poverty

  1059. charity to

  1060. help people

  1061. out of

  1062. physical and

  1063. emotional

  1064. poverty

  1065. investigate

  1066. what percentage

  1067. that's not

  1068. hard to

  1069. do

  1070. number two

  1071. if

  1072. that

  1073. percentage

  1074. is not

  1075. at least

  1076. 10%

  1077. the very

  1078. least amount

  1079. that the

  1080. disciples are

  1081. to give

  1082. away

  1083. the very

  1084. least

  1085. biblical

  1086. amount

  1087. is 10%

  1088. work out

  1089. how you

  1090. could aggressively

  1091. move towards

  1092. 10%

  1093. before the

  1094. end of

  1095. this year

  1096. which means

  1097. step three

  1098. work out

  1099. what sacrifices

  1100. you are going

  1101. to make

  1102. to get

  1103. there

  1104. selling

  1105. stuff

  1106. cutting

  1107. back on

  1108. expenses

  1109. if it

  1110. is not

  1111. sacrifice

  1112. to get

  1113. there

  1114. then it's

  1115. not radical

  1116. generosity

  1117. if you

  1118. don't need

  1119. to make

  1120. sacrifices

  1121. to give

  1122. 10%

  1123. then you

  1124. aren't

  1125. giving

  1126. enough

  1127. sacrificial

  1128. giving

  1129. is not

  1130. about a

  1131. percentage

  1132. it is

  1133. about our

  1134. living standard

  1135. changing

  1136. in such a

  1137. way that we

  1138. feel lost

  1139. so that others

  1140. might gain

  1141. that's what

  1142. sacrificial

  1143. giving is

  1144. that's what

  1145. radical

  1146. generosity

  1147. is

  1148. it's not

  1149. a percentage

  1150. it's about

  1151. you feeling

  1152. lost that

  1153. others might

  1154. gain

  1155. let me add

  1156. to what

  1157. Jesus says

  1158. here at

  1159. the end

  1160. of these

  1161. verses

  1162. having seen

  1163. the rich

  1164. young ruler

  1165. walk away

  1166. Peter pipes

  1167. in verse

  1168. 28

  1169. we have

  1170. left everything

  1171. to follow

  1172. you

  1173. what about

  1174. us

  1175. and Jesus

  1176. reassures

  1177. his disciples

  1178. that though

  1179. they have

  1180. sacrificed

  1181. many things

  1182. that they

  1183. have left

  1184. many things

  1185. they will

  1186. never fail

  1187. to receive

  1188. many more

  1189. blessings

  1190. now and

  1191. forever

  1192. truly I tell

  1193. you Jesus

  1194. said to them

  1195. no one who

  1196. has left

  1197. home or

  1198. wife or

  1199. brothers or

  1200. sisters or

  1201. parents or

  1202. children for

  1203. the sake of

  1204. the kingdom

  1205. of God

  1206. will fail to

  1207. receive many

  1208. times as much

  1209. in this age

  1210. and in the

  1211. age to

  1212. come

  1213. eternal

  1214. life

  1215. when you

  1216. choose to

  1217. lose for

  1218. others

  1219. you actually

  1220. gain

  1221. you actually

  1222. gain

  1223. in other

  1224. words when

  1225. you choose

  1226. to lose for

  1227. others

  1228. you're pursuing

  1229. your joy

  1230. step four

  1231. decide what

  1232. you're going

  1233. to give

  1234. and follow

  1235. through with it

  1236. make yourself

  1237. accountable

  1238. in other words

  1239. our giving

  1240. to ministry

  1241. and charity

  1242. is a spiritual

  1243. issue

  1244. and like all

  1245. spiritual issues

  1246. we're accountable

  1247. for it

  1248. to live radically

  1249. generous lives

  1250. with our money

  1251. our wealth

  1252. and our

  1253. possessions

  1254. you don't

  1255. need courage

  1256. as much

  1257. as you need

  1258. joy

  1259. you need

  1260. joy

  1261. you need

  1262. to understand

  1263. everything that

  1264. you have

  1265. in Jesus

  1266. what he

  1267. God has

  1268. already

  1269. provided you

  1270. with

  1271. we need

  1272. to be

  1273. relaxed

  1274. and at

  1275. peace

  1276. and secure

  1277. enough

  1278. to give

  1279. away

  1280. our

  1281. resources

  1282. and this

  1283. joy only

  1284. comes when

  1285. we look to

  1286. the true

  1287. rich young

  1288. ruler

  1289. who lost

  1290. everything

  1291. so that

  1292. we might

  1293. gain

  1294. absolutely

  1295. everything

  1296. for eternity

  1297. and the

  1298. more we

  1299. look to

  1300. Jesus

  1301. and the

  1302. riches

  1303. we have

  1304. in him

  1305. the more

  1306. we allow

  1307. the gospel

  1308. to be preached

  1309. to our hearts

  1310. and our minds

  1311. day in and

  1312. day out

  1313. the freer

  1314. we will

  1315. live

  1316. a pervasively

  1317. generous life

  1318. to have

  1319. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 8:9

  1320. 8 verse 9

  1321. with you

  1322. every time

  1323. you go into

  1324. Westfield

  1325. to have

  1326. it in

  1327. front of

  1328. you

  1329. before you

  1330. choose to

  1331. upgrade your

  1332. house

  1333. or do the

  1334. next renovation

  1335. to have

  1336. that in

  1337. front of

  1338. you say

  1339. here is

  1340. my hope

  1341. not this

  1342. thing that

  1343. I'm

  1344. holding

  1345. from the

  1346. rack

  1347. Jesus

  1348. is my

  1349. hope

  1350. fill

  1351. yourself

  1352. with gospel

  1353. joy

  1354. before

  1355. you open

  1356. your wallet

  1357. phone

  1358. you

  1359. knew

  1360. good

  1361. okay

  1362. I

  1363. may

  1364. oy

  1365. but

  1366. I

  1367. don't

  1368. okay
