  1. What if God was one of us?

  2. I'm showing my age.

  3. Do you know the song?

  4. What if God was one of us?

  5. There we go.

  6. I'm not allowed to sing anymore because YouTube will give us a strike and kick us off.

  7. However, in 1995, that song was written.

  8. It goes like this.

  9. If God had a face, what would it look like?

  10. And would you want to see if seeing meant believing,

  11. it meant that you would have to believe in things like heaven and Jesus?

  12. God is great.

  13. God is good.

  14. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  15. What if God was one of us?

  16. Just a slob like one of us.

  17. Just a stranger on a bus trying to make his way home.

  18. Back up to heaven all alone.

  19. Nobody calling on the phone except the Pope maybe in Rome.

  20. What if God was one of us?

  21. I remember being 10 years old on a bus, on the bus to school and hearing that song and

  22. sitting there for the whole bus ride just thinking about that question.

  23. What if God was one of us?

  24. As a kid, though, I missed all the sarcasm and the bitterness in the song.

  25. Because it's the song of a secular person.

  26. It's a song of someone who believes that God doesn't exist.

  27. And even if he does, it wouldn't matter even if he did show up.

  28. But what if God was one of us?

  29. Today we're going to hear from a man like one of us called Jesus, who claimed to be God.

  30. The wildest claim anyone could make.

  31. But if it's true, it really does matter.

  32. Is Jesus really God?

  33. If you went down into Chatswood and asked people that crazy question, what would people say?

  34. They might say, God doesn't exist, so Jesus is a fraud.

  35. Is Jesus really God?

  36. Or God does exist, but he doesn't care or can't or won't do anything.

  37. He's lazy or voiceless or vindictive.

  38. Jesus, no, he doesn't matter.

  39. Or maybe Jesus is God or some other deity.

  40. Maybe they're all the same.

  41. Or I'm a good person.

  42. I live a good life.

  43. So I don't need Jesus, even if he is God.

  44. How would you answer?

  45. I want you to imagine you're on a plane.

  46. But the plane is crashing.

  47. I'm sorry.

  48. The plane is crashing.

  49. What do you worry about in that moment?

  50. Would you be devastated that your life is about to end?

  51. Or angry at a God who doesn't care?

  52. Or be counting up your sins and checking your moral status?

  53. Would you have any assurance of what meeting with God will be like after you die?

  54. The truth is, we are all on a plane like that.

  55. A plane that is our lifetime with no landing gear.

  56. No matter what point in the flight you are, every life hits a mountain called death.

  57. We need someone to give us life beyond the crash before we crash.

  58. And we'll see today that there is only hope for life if Jesus really is God.

  59. So get John chapter 5 in front of you.

    John 5 chapter mention

  60. The beginning of this chapter, we heard this last week from John Lauer.

  61. And Jesus went to work on the Sabbath day.

  62. When it was illegal to work.

  63. He went and found a man who could not walk and did the work of healing him.

  64. And then in verse 16 of chapter 5 it says,

  65. The religious leaders began to persecute him for doing this.

  66. Why?

  67. Because Jesus deliberately broke the law as they knew it.

  68. It was said that only God could work on the Sabbath.

  69. For God is always working and his work is effortless.

  70. God only needs to speak and creation obeys.

  71. But Jesus says in verse 17,

  72. My father is always at his work to this very day.

  73. And I too am working.

  74. See, Jesus was claiming to be working legally.

  75. He was claiming to be God.

  76. And the religious leaders understood exactly what he claimed.

  77. No longer were they going to just persecute him as a nuisance.

  78. But from that point, as soon as Jesus said that,

  79. they sought to kill him.

  80. Not only was he breaking the Sabbath,

  81. but he was even calling God his own father,

  82. making himself equal with God.

  83. And the rest of the chapter

  84. is Jesus' answer to their charges and judgment of him.

  85. That he was not God and deserved punishment.

  86. Deserved death.

  87. So Jesus stated his case before them in our passage today,

  88. outlining his claims in more detail,

  89. and how he planned to prove that those claims are true.

  90. Jesus claimed to be God.

  91. He said that he was doing God's works,

  92. like a son following in his father's trade.

  93. Imagine a son and a father in a workshop.

  94. Maybe they're working on some wood.

  95. I'm not very handy.

  96. But I'm imagining this is the kind of language

  97. and picture Jesus is trying to paint

  98. when he says in verse 20,

  99. for the father loves the son

  100. and shows him all he does.

  101. Jesus even said he's worthy of worship like the father.

  102. Verse 23.

  103. Whoever does not honor the son

  104. does not honor the father who sent him.

  105. But the two-edged swords of his claim to be God is this,

  106. that he is the judge of all

  107. and he is the giver of life.

  108. Let's read from verse 28.

  109. A time is coming when all who are in their graves

  110. will hear his voice and come out.

  111. Those who have done what is good will rise to live

  112. and those who have done what is evil

  113. will rise to be condemned.

  114. Jesus' accusers were not shocked

  115. that he said every person will be raised to judgment,

  116. either to death and condemnation

  117. or death and to eternal life.

  118. But they were shocked

  119. because Jesus said he is the voice.

  120. He is the voice that would rise the dead

  121. into judgment.

  122. Verse 22.

  123. The father has entrusted all judgment to the son.

  124. Verse 27.

  125. And he has given him authority to judge.

  126. Jesus literally claimed he will judge all people

  127. for the life that they live.

  128. Their eternal destiny,

  129. my eternal destiny,

  130. will be determined by Jesus.

  131. Man.

  132. Speaking in Palestine 2,000 years ago.

  133. Verse 25.

  134. Very truly I tell you,

  135. a time is coming

  136. when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God

  137. and those who hear will live.

  138. Were you reading along with your Bible?

  139. You've got to hold me accountable here

  140. because I left something out.

  141. I did it on purpose,

  142. but you've got to be reading along.

  143. Because, he says,

  144. a time is coming

  145. and is now here.

  146. The determining of eternal destiny

  147. started the moment we heard Jesus' voice.

  148. The judge of the world has arrived.

  149. He came with a voice

  150. that would condemn

  151. or bring life.

  152. And Jesus also claimed

  153. to be the giver of life.

  154. At the beginning of chapter 5,

  155. he goes to work

  156. and does a healing.

  157. He heals completely dead legs.

  158. And then in verse 12,

  159. he came to be able

  160. to raise the completely dead

  161. just as the Father raises the dead

  162. and gives them life.

  163. Even so, the Son gives life.

  164. It's not just physical death, though,

  165. that he claimed to have power over.

  166. It's spiritual deadness, too.

  167. In verse 24,

  168. whoever hears my word

  169. and believes him who sent me

  170. has eternal life

  171. and will not be judged,

  172. but is crossed over

  173. from death to life.

  174. This judge claimed

  175. to be able

  176. to grant

  177. life

  178. on one condition.

  179. salvation.

  180. And it's backwards

  181. to what people

  182. in our city

  183. might expect.

  184. It's backwards

  185. to what the people

  186. hearing Jesus

  187. expected.

  188. Because it's not merit.

  189. It's not good works.

  190. It's not our own goodness.

  191. Jesus said

  192. just by believing

  193. he would grant

  194. eternal life.

  195. This believing

  196. is hearing Jesus

  197. claim to be God

  198. and agreeing

  199. that God,

  200. the Father,

  201. sent him.

  202. Look again

  203. at verse 24.

  204. Look at this promise.

  205. Jesus said

  206. that by believing

  207. in him

  208. we have

  209. eternal life.

  210. We have

  211. crossed over

  212. from death

  213. to life

  214. at the moment

  215. of believing.

  216. how could

  217. Jesus

  218. promise people

  219. this?

  220. There's a clue

  221. in the next verse.

  222. Verse 25.

  223. A time is coming

  224. and has now come

  225. when the dead

  226. will hear

  227. the voice

  228. of the Son of God

  229. and those who hear

  230. will live.

  231. Jesus is the start

  232. of eternal life.

  233. It's his initiative.

  234. It's his life

  235. and it's his promise.

  236. Believing in him

  237. now

  238. begins

  239. an eternal life.

  240. with him.

  241. We will all

  242. one day

  243. be physically dead

  244. and without

  245. an eternal life

  246. beyond death

  247. where spiritually

  248. is good as dead.

  249. Yet anyone,

  250. Jesus says,

  251. can receive

  252. eternal life

  253. now

  254. by believing

  255. in him

  256. and cross

  257. from death

  258. to immediate

  259. abundant

  260. eternal

  261. life.

  262. Life that begins

  263. in eternity

  264. with him

  265. as your God.

  266. Free from

  267. condemnation,

  268. free from fear,

  269. free from

  270. hopelessness

  271. by simply

  272. believing

  273. that Jesus

  274. really is

  275. God.

  276. These claims

  277. shatter

  278. the expectations

  279. of our city.

  280. God

  281. and over

  282. 100 years

  283. ago,

  284. a man

  285. called

  286. C.S.

  287. Lewis

  288. in a

  289. different

  290. city

  291. that didn't

  292. care about

  293. God

  294. and if they

  295. did,

  296. they had

  297. the wrong

  298. expectations.

  299. He wrote

  300. this about

  301. all that

  302. Jesus claims

  303. as a challenge

  304. to us.

  305. in the mouth

  306. of any

  307. speaker

  308. who is

  309. not

  310. God,

  311. these words

  312. would imply

  313. what I

  314. can only

  315. regard as

  316. a silliness

  317. and conceit

  318. unrivaled by

  319. any character

  320. in history.

  321. You must

  322. make your

  323. choice.

  324. Either this

  325. man was

  326. and is

  327. the son

  328. of God

  329. or else

  330. a madman

  331. or something

  332. worse.

  333. You can

  334. shut him

  335. up a

  336. fool,

  337. you can

  338. spit at

  339. him and

  340. kill him

  341. as a

  342. demon

  343. or you

  344. can fall

  345. at his

  346. feet and

  347. call him

  348. Lord and

  349. God.

  350. Chatswood,

  351. we've got

  352. to make

  353. a choice.

  354. Is Jesus

  355. a mad fool

  356. worthy of

  357. death or

  358. the judge

  359. of the

  360. world freely

  361. offering you

  362. immediate

  363. abundant

  364. eternal

  365. life?

  366. Those claims

  367. are astonishing.

  368. But Jesus

  369. claimed he

  370. can prove

  371. it to

  372. you.

  373. He lines

  374. up witnesses

  375. to his

  376. claims.

  377. For he

  378. says it's

  379. not enough

  380. for me

  381. just to

  382. say,

  383. in verse

  384. 31,

  385. that I

  386. am God.

  387. It's not

  388. enough for

  389. me to

  390. witness to

  391. myself.

  392. According

  393. to Jesus,

  394. John the

  395. Baptist,

  396. the greatest

  397. man of

  398. all time

  399. as Jesus

  400. described him

  401. in Matthew

  402. 11,

  403. John the

  404. Baptist

  405. declared

  406. Jesus as

  407. the Lamb

  408. of God.

  409. And God

  410. the Father

  411. declared

  412. audibly from

  413. heaven,

  414. this is

  415. my Son,

  416. listen to

  417. him.

  418. But Jesus

  419. says in

  420. this passage

  421. that his

  422. accusers don't

  423. recognize the

  424. Father.

  425. They've never

  426. seen him,

  427. they don't

  428. know his

  429. voice.

  430. So what he

  431. says of

  432. Jesus goes

  433. unheard.

  434. John 5,

  435. 37,

  436. he says,

  437. you've never

  438. heard his

  439. voice.

  440. And

  441. agreeing with

  442. the Father

  443. is scripture

  444. itself.

  445. That whole

  446. Old Testament

  447. that's come

  448. before.

  449. Jesus

  450. summarizes it

  451. as Moses,

  452. the great

  453. prophet and

  454. champion of

  455. Israel.

  456. He says in

  457. verse 46 and

  458. 47,

  459. if you

  460. believed

  461. Moses,

  462. you would

  463. have believed

  464. me.

  465. For he

  466. wrote about

  467. me.

  468. But since

  469. you do not

  470. believe what

  471. he wrote,

  472. how are you

  473. going to

  474. believe what

  475. I say?

  476. The religious

  477. leaders of

  478. the time had

  479. their heads

  480. buried in

  481. God's words,

  482. but that was

  483. not enough for

  484. them to

  485. recognize God

  486. right in

  487. front of

  488. them.

  489. But most

  490. of all,

  491. it's Jesus

  492. works

  493. themselves

  494. that witness

  495. strongest to

  496. the truth of

  497. his claim to

  498. be God.

  499. Have a look

  500. at verse

  501. 36.

  502. Jesus

  503. says,

  504. I have

  505. testimony

  506. weightier

  507. for the

  508. works that

  509. the Father

  510. has given

  511. me to

  512. finish.

  513. The works

  514. that I

  515. am doing

  516. testify that

  517. the Father

  518. has sent

  519. me.

  520. If you've

  521. been following

  522. along with

  523. this at

  524. church,

  525. or if you've

  526. ever read

  527. it before,

  528. the book

  529. of John

  530. describes

  531. Jesus'

  532. miracles,

  533. not with

  534. that word

  535. miracle,

  536. but the

  537. word sign.

  538. Signs

  539. point to

  540. something.

  541. They can

  542. be proved

  543. right or

  544. wrong.

  545. If you

  546. follow

  547. them.

  548. If you're

  549. local or

  550. you've

  551. been around

  552. Chatswood

  553. at all,

  554. or if

  555. you've

  556. ever been

  557. to our

  558. church,

  559. you go

  560. straight down

  561. this street

  562. here,

  563. down

  564. Help

  565. Street.

  566. Over

  567. the train

  568. line is a

  569. gigantic

  570. sign.

  571. It looks

  572. like it

  573. could be as

  574. big as

  575. that wall

  576. right there.

  577. That sign

  578. is trying to

  579. convince you

  580. that a new

  581. breakfast cereal

  582. or a new

  583. car or a new

  584. hair product

  585. is better

  586. than your

  587. current one.

  588. The

  589. flattering

  590. photoshopped

  591. picture is

  592. its proof

  593. that their

  594. cereal is

  595. tastier,

  596. that the

  597. car has a

  598. smoother ride,

  599. or that you

  600. really can

  601. regrow your

  602. hair.

  603. Chatswood is

  604. a prove-it

  605. kind of

  606. place.

  607. If you

  608. made the

  609. claim Jesus

  610. is God

  611. in

  612. Chatswood,

  613. if I

  614. put Jesus

  615. is God

  616. on that

  617. sign,

  618. people would

  619. drive down,

  620. it's hilarious,

  621. it's called

  622. Help

  623. Street,

  624. but they

  625. drive down

  626. Help

  627. Street,

  628. look at

  629. that and

  630. go,

  631. prove it.

  632. Chatswood

  633. is a

  634. prove-it

  635. kind of

  636. place.

  637. And Jesus

  638. says,

  639. his proof

  640. is in

  641. his signs.

  642. So let's

  643. look to

  644. some of

  645. Jesus'

  646. signs.

  647. And see,

  648. can Jesus

  649. really give

  650. us the

  651. life he

  652. claims to

  653. offer?

  654. Look back

  655. at verse

  656. 21.

  657. Just as

  658. the Father

  659. raises the

  660. dead,

  661. even so

  662. the Son

  663. gives life

  664. to whom

  665. he is

  666. pleased

  667. to give

  668. it.

  669. Jesus

  670. was able

  671. to give

  672. life to

  673. dead

  674. legs.

  675. Can he

  676. give life

  677. to dead

  678. people?

  679. Can he

  680. give life

  681. beyond the

  682. grave?

  683. Let's

  684. look in

  685. John for

  686. some

  687. proof.

  688. John

  689. 11.

  690. Later in

  691. John's

  692. Gospel,

  693. Jesus

  694. received a

  695. message that

  696. his friend

  697. Lazarus was

  698. sick and

  699. to come

  700. quick to

  701. the town

  702. nearby and

  703. heal him.

  704. But Jesus

  705. waited.

  706. He waited.

  707. He didn't

  708. go.

  709. And when he

  710. finally did

  711. go,

  712. Lazarus had

  713. been dead

  714. four days.

  715. And

  716. Lazarus's

  717. sister

  718. Martha said

  719. to Jesus

  720. in verse

  721. 21,

  722. if you'd

  723. been there,

  724. my brother

  725. would not

  726. have died.

  727. And just

  728. as an

  729. aside,

  730. last week

  731. we looked

  732. at John

  733. 4.

  734. There was

  735. a man

  736. who lived

  737. 20 miles

  738. away from

  739. where Jesus

  740. was and

  741. he traveled

  742. to Jesus

  743. and asked

  744. him,

  745. can you

  746. come the

  747. 20 miles

  748. to my

  749. town to

  750. heal my

  751. dying

  752. son?

  753. And Jesus

  754. just said,

  755. your son

  756. will be

  757. healed.

  758. The man

  759. went back

  760. to 20 miles

  761. and found

  762. his son

  763. healed.

  764. Jesus

  765. doesn't

  766. need to

  767. go.

  768. Remember

  769. the signs

  770. people.

  771. So

  772. Lazarus

  773. went with

  774. those in

  775. mourning.

  776. Jesus

  777. went with

  778. those in

  779. mourning to

  780. Lazarus's

  781. tomb.

  782. and he

  783. commanded

  784. it to

  785. be opened

  786. and the

  787. smell

  788. hit everyone

  789. full in

  790. the face

  791. and Jesus

  792. shouted,

  793. Lazarus

  794. come out

  795. and Lazarus

  796. walked out

  797. in burial

  798. cloths

  799. alive.

  800. Jesus

  801. proved he

  802. could raise

  803. the dead.

  804. He

  805. proved he

  806. could bring

  807. dead limbs

  808. back to

  809. life.

  810. He

  811. proved he

  812. could bring

  813. dead people

  814. back to

  815. life.

  816. How

  817. could he

  818. prove that

  819. he could

  820. offer

  821. eternal

  822. life?

  823. John

  824. knows that

  825. that's

  826. his next

  827. question

  828. because

  829. immediately

  830. after he

  831. describes

  832. this

  833. wonderful

  834. moment of

  835. celebration,

  836. this wonderful

  837. sign,

  838. he says,

  839. and now the

  840. religious leaders

  841. literally signed

  842. his death

  843. warrant.

  844. That was the

  845. moment they

  846. said,

  847. nope,

  848. enough is

  849. enough,

  850. no more

  851. planning,

  852. he's got

  853. to die

  854. now.

  855. And

  856. spoiler alert,

  857. he did.

  858. Jesus'

  859. plane hit

  860. the mountain.

  861. How can a

  862. man that

  863. claims he

  864. is God

  865. and the

  866. giver of

  867. eternal

  868. life be

  869. legitimate

  870. if he

  871. dies?

  872. Well,

  873. in a

  874. similar tomb

  875. to Lazarus,

  876. Jesus was

  877. buried.

  878. And a

  879. couple of

  880. days after

  881. his brutal

  882. murder,

  883. his followers

  884. went to

  885. properly

  886. prepare

  887. his dead

  888. body,

  889. because they

  890. couldn't

  891. go on

  892. the

  893. Sabbath,

  894. because that

  895. would have

  896. been work.

  897. But the

  898. tomb was

  899. empty and

  900. the body

  901. was gone.

  902. And then

  903. Jesus revealed

  904. himself as

  905. alive,

  906. unexpectedly

  907. risen,

  908. still scarred

  909. from his

  910. cross,

  911. and hundreds

  912. met with

  913. him.

  914. And many

  915. of them

  916. died

  917. witnessing

  918. to his

  919. resurrection.

  920. But one

  921. disciple,

  922. early on,

  923. Thomas,

  924. missed seeing

  925. the risen

  926. Jesus with

  927. the rest

  928. of them.

  929. And he

  930. doubted that

  931. Jesus lived,

  932. and he

  933. demanded,

  934. in John

  935. 20,

  936. 25,

  937. he says,

  938. unless I

  939. see and

  940. put my

  941. finger where

  942. the nails

  943. were,

  944. put my

  945. hand in

  946. his side,

  947. I will

  948. not believe.

  949. He challenged

  950. Jesus'

  951. claims.

  952. He's

  953. Chatswood

  954. in that

  955. moment.

  956. We join in

  957. with him

  958. and we

  959. say,

  960. prove it.

  961. Then Jesus

  962. appeared to

  963. Thomas,

  964. as if to

  965. us,

  966. and said,

  967. go ahead,

  968. touch my

  969. scars,

  970. it's really

  971. me.

  972. But for

  973. Thomas,

  974. seeing was

  975. believing,

  976. as he

  977. witnessed,

  978. my Lord

  979. and my

  980. God.

  981. Jesus

  982. really is

  983. God.

  984. Jesus

  985. claimed to be

  986. God who can

  987. offer immediate,

  988. abundant,

  989. eternal life,

  990. and proved

  991. it.

  992. He proved

  993. it by signs

  994. he performed

  995. as the

  996. God and

  997. the giver

  998. of life.

  999. And Jesus

  1000. was on the

  1001. plane of

  1002. life like

  1003. we are,

  1004. and died

  1005. like we

  1006. will,

  1007. yet lives

  1008. to prove

  1009. that he

  1010. has life

  1011. to give

  1012. for now

  1013. and for

  1014. eternity.

  1015. And that's

  1016. why this

  1017. gospel exists.

  1018. Just read it

  1019. out before.

  1020. John says

  1021. immediately after

  1022. Thomas'

  1023. witnesses to

  1024. Jesus,

  1025. almost like

  1026. he's connecting

  1027. it on

  1028. purpose.

  1029. To show

  1030. us this

  1031. sign.

  1032. So that

  1033. you may

  1034. believe that

  1035. Jesus is

  1036. the Messiah,

  1037. the Son of

  1038. God,

  1039. and that by

  1040. believing you

  1041. might have

  1042. life in

  1043. his name.

  1044. That's why

  1045. he's written

  1046. the book.

  1047. He hopes

  1048. you'll see

  1049. Jesus through

  1050. his witness.

  1051. And that

  1052. Jesus really

  1053. is the

  1054. life-giving

  1055. judge of

  1056. all people.

  1057. And that

  1058. Jesus really

  1059. is God.

  1060. Remember

  1061. that song I

  1062. quoted at the

  1063. beginning?

  1064. What if

  1065. God was

  1066. one of

  1067. us?

  1068. I just

  1069. want to

  1070. point you

  1071. to verse

  1072. two.

  1073. Because it

  1074. asks this

  1075. bitter,

  1076. sarcastic

  1077. question of

  1078. us,

  1079. assuming that

  1080. it wouldn't

  1081. matter if

  1082. God was

  1083. one of

  1084. us.

  1085. Here's the

  1086. question.

  1087. If God

  1088. was one

  1089. of us,

  1090. would you

  1091. want to

  1092. see?

  1093. If seeing

  1094. meant that

  1095. you would

  1096. have to

  1097. believe in

  1098. Jesus?

  1099. Well,

  1100. like Thomas,

  1101. your answer

  1102. should be

  1103. yes.

  1104. Yes,

  1105. I want

  1106. to believe.

  1107. I'm

  1108. on a

  1109. crashing

  1110. plane and

  1111. Jesus is

  1112. offering me

  1113. life.

  1114. No matter

  1115. what you

  1116. right now

  1117. think of

  1118. God,

  1119. no matter

  1120. what,

  1121. Jesus

  1122. offers you

  1123. life.

  1124. No matter

  1125. what you

  1126. think of

  1127. your life,

  1128. Jesus offers

  1129. you an

  1130. abundant

  1131. life today.

  1132. life.

  1133. Jesus can

  1134. offer it

  1135. to you

  1136. because he

  1137. died your

  1138. death.

  1139. He

  1140. experienced

  1141. the crash

  1142. of your

  1143. life and

  1144. all of

  1145. your judgment

  1146. for you

  1147. as he

  1148. crashed on

  1149. his cross.

  1150. His

  1151. astonishing

  1152. offer of

  1153. life is

  1154. proved just

  1155. and fair

  1156. because his

  1157. perfect life

  1158. deserved no

  1159. end.

  1160. His life

  1161. deserved landing

  1162. gear.

  1163. instead,

  1164. he offers

  1165. you a

  1166. trade.

  1167. If you

  1168. claim the

  1169. trade Jesus

  1170. offers you,

  1171. you can

  1172. exchange your

  1173. life and

  1174. your judgments.

  1175. Evil for

  1176. good.

  1177. Condemnation

  1178. for life.

  1179. life and

  1180. he will

  1181. give it to

  1182. you right

  1183. now.

  1184. Crossing

  1185. over from

  1186. death to

  1187. life if

  1188. you believe.

  1189. Only

  1190. Jesus can

  1191. offer you

  1192. an abundant

  1193. life which

  1194. is rest and

  1195. peace from

  1196. all that

  1197. your life is

  1198. striving toward.

  1199. forward.

  1200. There's no

  1201. ticket on

  1202. offer here

  1203. off this

  1204. crashing

  1205. plane but

  1206. there's rest

  1207. and peace

  1208. for the

  1209. flight and

  1210. that's what

  1211. Jesus'

  1212. abundant

  1213. life redeems

  1214. you from.

  1215. It's a

  1216. life at rest

  1217. from the

  1218. striving that's

  1219. underneath all

  1220. the work that

  1221. you do.

  1222. The work in

  1223. striving for

  1224. your security,

  1225. for your

  1226. reputation,

  1227. for your own

  1228. righteousness.

  1229. righteousness and

  1230. it's peace from

  1231. having to work

  1232. your works to

  1233. earn anything

  1234. before God.

  1235. You can

  1236. receive belief

  1237. in him as

  1238. an unearned

  1239. gift.

  1240. Only Jesus

  1241. offers you

  1242. hope beyond

  1243. life.

  1244. Here's the

  1245. verse I would

  1246. write to this

  1247. song.

  1248. What if God

  1249. was one of

  1250. us?

  1251. In this

  1252. broken and

  1253. violent,

  1254. decaying,

  1255. deathward

  1256. world,

  1257. there is

  1258. an end to

  1259. your fear

  1260. of

  1261. condemnation,

  1262. an assurance

  1263. that cannot

  1264. be shaken.

  1265. It's joy for

  1266. today and

  1267. tomorrow and

  1268. hope beyond

  1269. death.

  1270. For God

  1271. was one

  1272. of us.

  1273. Jesus really

  1274. is God.

  1275. Is Jesus

  1276. really God?

  1277. Your answer

  1278. should be yes.

  1279. I want you

  1280. to believe in

  1281. Jesus.

  1282. You should

  1283. want to

  1284. believe in

  1285. Jesus.

  1286. Take your

  1287. next step

  1288. and believe

  1289. today.

  1290. Receive the

  1291. eternal life

  1292. that he

  1293. offers.

  1294. For Jesus

  1295. really is

  1296. God.

  1297. And if you

  1298. believe Jesus

  1299. is God,

  1300. then join

  1301. in with

  1302. John as

  1303. a witness

  1304. to Jesus.

  1305. Share

  1306. Jesus'

  1307. signs with

  1308. people so

  1309. that they

  1310. might believe

  1311. in him.

  1312. From

  1313. belief in

  1314. Jesus brings

  1315. a desire to

  1316. be a sign

  1317. that points

  1318. people to

  1319. Jesus Christ.

  1320. I'm going to

  1321. do something

  1322. we don't

  1323. often do in

  1324. church,

  1325. which is

  1326. get out

  1327. your phone.

  1328. Get out

  1329. your phone

  1330. and point it

  1331. at the

  1332. screen and

  1333. scan this

  1334. code.

  1335. And if

  1336. you do,

  1337. you will

  1338. download an

  1339. app that's

  1340. free.

  1341. It's a

  1342. resource called

  1343. Word

  1344. One-to-One.

  1345. This is the

  1346. Gospel of

  1347. John and

  1348. it's broken

  1349. up into

  1350. little short

  1351. readings.

  1352. There's

  1353. questions to

  1354. ask yourself,

  1355. to discuss

  1356. with others,

  1357. and there's

  1358. help to

  1359. understand the

  1360. context and

  1361. the meaning

  1362. of the

  1363. book of

  1364. John.

  1365. This app

  1366. will help

  1367. you share

  1368. the good

  1369. news of

  1370. John,

  1371. explore the

  1372. claims and

  1373. proof that

  1374. Jesus really

  1375. is God,

  1376. and how

  1377. it really

  1378. matters that

  1379. Jesus is

  1380. God.

  1381. Once you

  1382. have the

  1383. app,

  1384. there's a

  1385. button called

  1386. Share,

  1387. and you can

  1388. hold that

  1389. code out to

  1390. anyone who

  1391. has a phone,

  1392. and you

  1393. can open

  1394. the Bible

  1395. with someone

  1396. who doesn't

  1397. have one,

  1398. no matter

  1399. where you

  1400. are,

  1401. as long as

  1402. you have

  1403. battery on

  1404. their phone.

  1405. And if

  1406. you believe

  1407. that Jesus

  1408. is really

  1409. God,

  1410. then he's

  1411. worthy of

  1412. your worship.

  1413. As we enjoy

  1414. Jesus'

  1415. accomplishments

  1416. for us,

  1417. and the

  1418. peace and

  1419. rest in

  1420. him,

  1421. we reorder

  1422. the priorities

  1423. of our

  1424. life around

  1425. his.

  1426. For he

  1427. is worthy

  1428. of your

  1429. life.

  1430. That's why

  1431. we've sung

  1432. today.

  1433. That's why

  1434. we teach

  1435. and learn

  1436. new songs,

  1437. because he

  1438. inspires works

  1439. of thanks

  1440. and praise.

  1441. So,

  1442. what if

  1443. God was

  1444. one of
