  1. Let me pray.

  2. Father God, please send your spirit.

  3. Without your spirit, we are blind.

  4. We cannot see the magnificence of the Lord Jesus.

  5. We cannot see our slavery to sin.

  6. And so send your spirit, have mercy on us,

  7. that we might see his beauty, his glory, his magnificence,

  8. and that we might run to him.

  9. And we ask it for your sake. Amen.

  10. It's time to see what I can do to test the limits and break through.

  11. No right, no wrong, no rules for me.

  12. I'm free.

  13. For those of you who are unfamiliar with those lyrics,

  14. that's because of two reasons.

  15. You don't have young children, and particularly young girls.

  16. And secondly, because you weren't listening to my sermon earlier this year

  17. when I actually used this as an illustration.

  18. But they are the lyrics from, or part of the lyrics,

  19. from the song Let It Go in the Disney movie Frozen.

  20. It's sung by a character who is determined to not be the good girl that society wants her to be.

  21. And instead, she would let go.

  22. She would express what she had been holding back inside.

  23. And she would live for herself and only for herself.

  24. And she declares that the moment that she does that,

  25. there will no longer be any rights or wrongs.

  26. It will just be about her.

  27. And when there's no rights and wrongs, and it's just about her,

  28. then she is truly free.

  29. Now, that's just one example of what is called today total individual freedom.

  30. It's the relative and the dominant worldview of the Western world.

  31. It's what we marinate in in our society day in and day out.

  32. It goes something like this.

  33. What we need is to be free to live life as we see fit.

  34. And to work together to make the world a better and more just place to live.

  35. Religion, however, gets in the way of that.

  36. It constrains our freedom to live as we see fit.

  37. And so what we need to be is seculars, get rid of religion,

  38. and everyone will be totally free.

  39. Now, the modern concept of freedom, according to sociologists,

  40. is the freedom of self-assertion.

  41. And you are ultimately free when you have the absence of all constraints.

  42. Now, even though it is, in fact, ironically, the Christian faith that gave the world the concept of personal individual freedom,

  43. it is seen nowadays in our society as the arch enemy of freedom.

  44. Religion as a whole is seen as the arch enemy of freedom,

  45. but Christianity, particularly in the West.

  46. And as modern people, therefore, we have to ask ourselves,

  47. do you actually have to choose between freedom and faith?

  48. Are they actually opposites to one another?

  49. Is it possible to follow Jesus, to be a Christian,

  50. and to actually be abundantly free at the same time?

  51. Now, I take it, I'm just going to take this for granted,

  52. I won't do a poll on this one.

  53. I take it that everyone in this room wants to be free.

  54. I won't bother even taking a poll on that.

  55. That you want to be free in the fullest and deepest sense.

  56. That is, if the opposite of freedom is bondage and slavery,

  57. no one wants that.

  58. No one wants that.

  59. We all want to be truly free,

  60. and yet this is exactly what Jesus promises us here.

  61. So, the outline in the St. Paul's app,

  62. my first point, constraining freedom.

  63. Verses 31 and 32 in John 8,

  64. Jesus makes a walloping statement

  65. and shows us the difficulty of freedom.

  66. To the Jews who had believed him,

  67. Jesus said,

  68. if you hold to my teaching,

  69. you are really my disciples,

  70. then you will know the truth,

  71. and the truth will set you free.

  72. Verse 32 promises freedom.

  73. But Jesus says in the verse before it,

  74. it's only if you hold to his teaching

  75. that you will get freedom.

  76. That is, to hold to his teaching

  77. is to embrace it,

  78. to obey it,

  79. to live it.

  80. It is so much stronger

  81. than just agreeing with it.

  82. It's so much stronger

  83. than just assenting to it.

  84. Jesus is saying that we can only be free

  85. if,

  86. if,

  87. if,

  88. we accept his constraints.

  89. And that's the exact opposite

  90. of what our society tells us,

  91. of what true freedom is.

  92. Philosophers nowadays talk about

  93. two kinds of freedom.

  94. negative freedom

  95. and positive freedom.

  96. They describe that what is

  97. communicated consistently

  98. through our culture nowadays

  99. is regarded as total negative freedom.

  100. It's freedom

  101. from any barrier

  102. or any constraints

  103. on our choices.

  104. positive freedom

  105. is freedom

  106. for.

  107. That is,

  108. using freedom

  109. to live

  110. in a particular way

  111. for the good

  112. of all.

  113. Not just me.

  114. And so what's described

  115. in society nowadays

  116. is freedom

  117. negative,

  118. total negative freedom.

  119. and total negative freedom

  120. is simplistic

  121. and it's unworkable

  122. because it's never how freedom

  123. actually works.

  124. True freedom

  125. is

  126. accepting

  127. the right constraints

  128. in life.

  129. Not no constraints.

  130. So,

  131. I'll give you an example.

  132. I'm a diabetic.

  133. I'm a type 1 diabetic.

  134. This is not a pager.

  135. This is an insulin pump.

  136. So,

  137. everyone who says,

  138. oh,

  139. I thought pagers were,

  140. you know,

  141. gone now.

  142. No,

  143. no,

  144. it's not a pager.

  145. It's an insulin pump.

  146. I'm not,

  147. you know,

  148. backward in technology

  149. in any way.

  150. So,

  151. when this thing's vibrating,

  152. no one's contacting me

  153. except blood sugar levels.

  154. As a diabetic,

  155. if I chose to exercise

  156. my desires in life

  157. and my freedom

  158. by consuming

  159. whatever I wanted,

  160. chocolate cake,

  161. Tim Tams,

  162. burgers,

  163. Coke,

  164. rice,

  165. yes,

  166. I'm sorry,

  167. it is evil,

  168. rice,

  169. no constraints,

  170. no constraints

  171. whatsoever

  172. because that's how

  173. I exercise my freedom.

  174. I'm free

  175. until I'm not.

  176. Until I'm not

  177. because my body

  178. would be a constraint

  179. on my life

  180. at some point.

  181. My body

  182. will put constraints

  183. on me.

  184. I am not free

  185. to eat

  186. whatever I want

  187. and free

  188. at the same time

  189. to have

  190. toes and feet,

  191. free to have,

  192. to be able to see

  193. the consequences

  194. of a non-compliant

  195. diabetic life

  196. is blindness

  197. and blood circulation

  198. issues

  199. and organs

  200. shut down

  201. and I can't run

  202. and I can't live,

  203. I won't be free

  204. to live

  205. is the bottom line.

  206. So the question is,

  207. what if I,

  208. deepest desire

  209. of my life

  210. is sugar

  211. and also

  212. the other deepest

  213. desire of my life

  214. is actually

  215. to live?

  216. The two great

  217. deepest desires

  218. of my life

  219. are in conflict

  220. with one another

  221. and I have to

  222. choose

  223. which deep

  224. desire of my life

  225. is going

  226. to give me

  227. the most amount

  228. of freedom.

  229. That is,

  230. I have to choose

  231. the liberating

  232. constraint

  233. on my life.

  234. True freedom

  235. is not the absence

  236. of constraints

  237. on my life,

  238. it is choosing

  239. the liberating

  240. constraint

  241. constraint

  242. on my life.

  243. It is the

  244. strategic

  245. loss

  246. of some

  247. freedoms

  248. in order

  249. to gain

  250. the more

  251. liberating

  252. constraint.

  253. John Carson,

  254. really,

  255. I'm just quoting

  256. John Carson

  257. here and who

  258. better got to

  259. quote

  260. his commentary

  261. on John 8

  262. where he says,

  263. true freedom

  264. is not the liberty

  265. to do anything

  266. we please

  267. but the liberty

  268. to do what

  269. we ought

  270. and it is

  271. true freedom

  272. because doing

  273. what we

  274. ought

  275. is what

  276. actually

  277. pleases us

  278. or if I was

  279. to put that

  280. in his

  281. commentary,

  282. doing what

  283. we ought

  284. is what

  285. brings us

  286. the most

  287. amount

  288. of joy.

  289. But there

  290. is a barrier

  291. to our

  292. freedom.

  293. In

  294. verses 33

  295. and 34

  296. is my

  297. second point

  298. on the

  299. outline,

  300. Jesus shows

  301. us the

  302. ultimate

  303. barrier to

  304. our freedom.

  305. They

  306. answered him,

  307. we are

  308. Abraham's

  309. descendants

  310. and have

  311. never been

  312. slaves of

  313. anyone.

  314. How can

  315. you say

  316. that we

  317. shall be

  318. set free?

  319. Jesus

  320. replied,

  321. very truly

  322. I tell

  323. you,

  324. everyone

  325. who sins

  326. is a

  327. slave to

  328. sin.

  329. Remarkably

  330. what Jesus

  331. says here

  332. is that

  333. the biggest

  334. barrier

  335. to our

  336. freedom

  337. is inside

  338. of us.

  339. Our

  340. society

  341. tells us

  342. that the

  343. ultimate

  344. barrier to

  345. our freedom

  346. is outside

  347. of us.

  348. institutions,

  349. it's

  350. social

  351. conventions,

  352. it's

  353. inequality,

  354. it's your

  355. family,

  356. it's the

  357. government,

  358. it's romantic

  359. partners,

  360. it's your

  361. job,

  362. it's a

  363. whole range

  364. of things

  365. outside

  366. of you

  367. that are

  368. the barriers

  369. to your

  370. freedom.

  371. It's that

  372. stuff outside

  373. of us that's

  374. getting in the

  375. way of us

  376. fulfilling our

  377. desires and

  378. our freedom

  379. in life.

  380. of course

  381. I'm not

  382. denying that

  383. there are

  384. oppressive

  385. forces in

  386. society and

  387. relationships,

  388. but what

  389. Jesus is

  390. saying here

  391. is the

  392. ultimate

  393. barrier to

  394. true

  395. freedom

  396. is inside,

  397. inside.

  398. In

  399. verses 33

  400. and 34

  401. Jesus is

  402. addressing the

  403. same group

  404. that he's

  405. addressing in

  406. verse 31.

  407. That is,

  408. as we see

  409. in verse 31,

  410. the Jews

  411. who had

  412. believed him.

  413. And what

  414. he wants to

  415. do to this

  416. group of

  417. people that

  418. he's currently

  419. faced with,

  420. he wants to

  421. show them

  422. their biggest

  423. problem.

  424. Their biggest

  425. problem.

  426. And here

  427. it is.

  428. Notice

  429. he does not

  430. say that

  431. this group of

  432. people in

  433. verse 31

  434. believed in

  435. him.

  436. very

  437. specifically

  438. John says

  439. they believed

  440. him.

  441. That is,

  442. what John's

  443. doing here

  444. is he's

  445. putting this

  446. group of

  447. people currently

  448. talking to

  449. Jesus in

  450. the same

  451. category that

  452. he's already

  453. spoken about in

  454. John 6 and

  455. in other places

  456. in John.

  457. Those who

  458. have a fickle

  459. faith.

  460. And here

  461. already we

  462. are seeing

  463. that these

  464. people are

  465. getting ticked

  466. off with

  467. Jesus.

  468. And by the

  469. end of this

  470. section,

  471. as Nolien read

  472. out to us,

  473. they're ready

  474. to kill him.

  475. Their biggest

  476. problem is

  477. what Jesus

  478. says in

  479. verse 34.

  480. They are

  481. slaves.

  482. And unless

  483. the truth

  484. about Jesus,

  485. the gospel

  486. intervenes,

  487. they will

  488. always remain

  489. in slavery.

  490. And they're

  491. completely insulted

  492. by this.

  493. They say,

  494. we are

  495. Abraham's

  496. descendants and

  497. we have

  498. never been

  499. slaves to

  500. anyone.

  501. Now, of

  502. course, up to

  503. this point in

  504. history, in

  505. first century

  506. Palestine,

  507. there's hardly

  508. been a major

  509. power in

  510. the world

  511. that Abraham's

  512. descendants have

  513. not been

  514. servitude to.

  515. Egypt,

  516. Assyria,

  517. Babylon,

  518. Greece,

  519. Syria, and

  520. even in that

  521. moment, while

  522. they're talking

  523. to Jesus,

  524. there's Romans

  525. everywhere.

  526. That is,

  527. it's not like

  528. they missed

  529. the obvious.

  530. They knew

  531. exactly what

  532. Jesus was

  533. talking about.

  534. They knew

  535. that Jesus

  536. was talking

  537. about an

  538. inward

  539. slavery.

  540. And yet,

  541. in this

  542. moment,

  543. they are

  544. blind.

  545. They could

  546. not see

  547. their slavery.

  548. As Abraham's

  549. descendants,

  550. they thought

  551. they were

  552. right with

  553. God.

  554. Now,

  555. God and

  556. us,

  557. we're okay.

  558. We've got

  559. the religious

  560. system,

  561. we've got

  562. sacrifices,

  563. we've got the

  564. temple,

  565. we're good.

  566. And Jesus

  567. says to them,

  568. no, no, no,

  569. you are not

  570. good.

  571. Inwardly,

  572. you are

  573. slaves to

  574. sin.

  575. And

  576. shockingly,

  577. in verse

  578. 34,

  579. he takes

  580. the point

  581. even further.

  582. I tell you

  583. the truth,

  584. everyone

  585. who sins

  586. is a

  587. slave

  588. to sin.

  589. everyone.

  590. Everyone

  591. who has

  592. ever

  593. made a

  594. mistake,

  595. everyone

  596. who has

  597. never

  598. lived

  599. perfectly,

  600. that is

  601. just the

  602. surface

  603. issue.

  604. Your faults

  605. on the

  606. outside are

  607. just your

  608. surface

  609. issue.

  610. Deeper

  611. down,

  612. you are

  613. enslaved

  614. to sin,

  615. captivated

  616. by sin.

  617. sin is

  618. a power

  619. in our

  620. hearts,

  621. over our

  622. lives that

  623. make us

  624. do the

  625. bad things.

  626. Sin sets

  627. itself up

  628. against God,

  629. it sets

  630. itself up

  631. against other

  632. people,

  633. and every

  634. person,

  635. according to

  636. Jesus,

  637. is enslaved

  638. to it.

  639. And yet

  640. every person

  641. is blind

  642. to the

  643. deepest

  644. reality

  645. of it.

  646. I remember

  647. talking to

  648. someone not

  649. that long

  650. ago who

  651. said,

  652. yeah,

  653. I'm not

  654. perfect,

  655. but it

  656. didn't

  657. bother

  658. them.

  659. They're

  660. just like,

  661. because I'm

  662. just like

  663. everyone else,

  664. but they're

  665. blind to the

  666. deepest reality

  667. of that sin

  668. and what it

  669. means.

  670. That's the

  671. point of

  672. chapter 9,

  673. which we

  674. didn't read,

  675. but I want

  676. to include,

  677. we cannot

  678. see our

  679. sin,

  680. and we

  681. cannot see

  682. the depth

  683. and the

  684. horror and

  685. the implication

  686. of our

  687. sin,

  688. and therefore

  689. the freedom

  690. that only

  691. Jesus can

  692. give us

  693. from our

  694. sin.

  695. There are

  696. so many

  697. freedoms that

  698. we can make

  699. for ourselves,

  700. particularly

  701. in the

  702. Western

  703. world,

  704. world,

  705. but not

  706. this one,

  707. and for

  708. the most

  709. part in

  710. life,

  711. we go

  712. about our

  713. existence

  714. unaware

  715. that we're

  716. not free.

  717. We are

  718. deeply

  719. enslaved to

  720. sin.

  721. Let me

  722. try and

  723. land this.

  724. It's a

  725. little bit

  726. of a

  727. pun,

  728. really,

  729. but you'll

  730. get there

  731. in a

  732. minute.

  733. Let me

  734. try and

  735. give you

  736. a definition

  737. of freedom.

  738. You are

  739. fully free

  740. when you

  741. have the

  742. desire,

  743. the ability,

  744. the opportunity

  745. to do

  746. what will

  747. leave you

  748. with no

  749. regrets

  750. forever.

  751. The

  752. ability,

  753. the desire,

  754. the ability,

  755. the opportunity

  756. to do what

  757. will leave you

  758. with no

  759. regrets

  760. forever.

  761. We take

  762. that as a

  763. definition of

  764. freedom.

  765. Let me

  766. think about

  767. land this

  768. and talk

  769. about freedom

  770. and parachuting.

  771. You have

  772. always wanted

  773. to experience

  774. the freedom

  775. of parachuting.

  776. You pay

  777. your money

  778. and you

  779. make it to

  780. the airport

  781. to the

  782. plane and

  783. hop on the

  784. plane without

  785. an accident.

  786. Tick that

  787. box,

  788. you have the

  789. freedom of

  790. opportunity.

  791. ability.

  792. You've done

  793. the classes

  794. and you

  795. know how

  796. to parachute.

  797. Tick that

  798. box,

  799. you have the

  800. freedom of

  801. ability.

  802. You're up

  803. in the

  804. plane,

  805. you look

  806. out the

  807. door,

  808. ready to

  809. jump,

  810. tick that

  811. box,

  812. you have the

  813. freedom of

  814. desire.

  815. This has

  816. been,

  817. I just

  818. cannot

  819. wait to

  820. jump out

  821. of this

  822. perfectly

  823. good plane.

  824. You're not

  825. frozen by

  826. fear.

  827. This is the

  828. moment you've

  829. been living

  830. for.

  831. Opportunity,

  832. desire and

  833. ability all

  834. line up and

  835. so you

  836. jump.

  837. And as

  838. you free

  839. fall, you

  840. are enjoying

  841. the exhilaration

  842. of it all.

  843. Yes!

  844. Until the

  845. moment you

  846. discover your

  847. parachute's

  848. defective.

  849. And in

  850. the moment

  851. you discover

  852. your parachute

  853. is defective,

  854. you are

  855. enslaved

  856. to the

  857. forces of

  858. gravity.

  859. You cannot

  860. do anything

  861. about it.

  862. What you

  863. are doing

  864. so happily

  865. and so

  866. free

  867. is going

  868. to kill

  869. you.

  870. You are

  871. enslaved to

  872. destruction.

  873. You are

  874. what you

  875. are unaware

  876. of is

  877. right from

  878. the get

  879. go.

  880. Before you

  881. even set

  882. out to

  883. the airport,

  884. you were

  885. already

  886. enslaved to

  887. destruction.

  888. But you

  889. are unaware

  890. of it.

  891. you

  892. couldn't

  893. see.

  894. You

  895. were

  896. blind to

  897. that

  898. reality.

  899. And it

  900. feels like

  901. freedom right

  902. until you

  903. pull that

  904. ripcord or

  905. the instructor

  906. does it for

  907. you.

  908. And in

  909. that moment

  910. all the

  911. exhilaration,

  912. all the

  913. freedom will

  914. prove to be

  915. an illusion.

  916. In 30

  917. seconds you'll

  918. be dead.

  919. You

  920. will be

  921. dead.

  922. And in

  923. John chapter

    John 8 chapter mention

  924. 8,

  925. Jesus is

  926. trying to

  927. help these

  928. people and

  929. us see

  930. that sin

  931. has enslaved

  932. us.

  933. And that

  934. religion and

  935. the moral

  936. effort and

  937. pursuing

  938. self-assertion

  939. is nothing

  940. more than a

  941. defective

  942. parachute.

  943. only he

  944. can set

  945. us free.

  946. The

  947. Bible tells

  948. us that the

  949. wages of

  950. sin is

  951. death and

  952. unless that

  953. wage is

  954. paid, we

  955. are not

  956. free.

  957. In

  958. John 8,

  959. Jesus doesn't

  960. unpack what

  961. actually that

  962. means, what

  963. sin is, but

  964. the rest of

  965. the Bible

  966. does.

  967. And I just

  968. want to pick

  969. on, there's a

  970. number of

  971. ways that it

  972. describes.

  973. I just want

  974. to mention

  975. two relatively

  976. briefly.

  977. First of

  978. all, sin

  979. is resisting

  980. our creator,

  981. resisting

  982. obeying our

  983. creator.

  984. Deep inside

  985. the human

  986. heart is an

  987. impulse that

  988. resists anyone

  989. telling us how

  990. to live our

  991. lives.

  992. Anyone telling

  993. us how to

  994. live our

  995. lives.

  996. I've never

  997. had to instruct

  998. any of my

  999. children how to

  1000. do that, how

  1001. to resist

  1002. instruction.

  1003. Never had to

  1004. do that.

  1005. My parents

  1006. didn't have to

  1007. teach me

  1008. about it

  1009. either.

  1010. All sorts

  1011. of things

  1012. will bring

  1013. out that

  1014. impulse in

  1015. our hearts.

  1016. Parents,

  1017. the state,

  1018. schools,

  1019. institutions,

  1020. clubs imposing

  1021. boundaries and

  1022. expectations, but

  1023. the ultimate

  1024. trigger deep in

  1025. our hearts is

  1026. God himself.

  1027. When God

  1028. tells us how

  1029. to live,

  1030. this is the

  1031. difference.

  1032. when God,

  1033. our creator,

  1034. tells us how

  1035. to live,

  1036. it's like the

  1037. owner's manual

  1038. instructing us

  1039. how to live,

  1040. so to speak.

  1041. As the

  1042. creator, he

  1043. designed life

  1044. to function a

  1045. particular way.

  1046. It's the same

  1047. way that my

  1048. car manufacturer,

  1049. I've got this

  1050. manual in the

  1051. glove box to

  1052. how to get the

  1053. most out of

  1054. your vehicle.

  1055. vehicle.

  1056. And there's a

  1057. heap of warning

  1058. instructions of

  1059. what not to do

  1060. with it.

  1061. You know,

  1062. don't go beyond

  1063. this depth of

  1064. water, it's not

  1065. a boat, you

  1066. know.

  1067. It has

  1068. instructions on

  1069. fuel and

  1070. servicings and

  1071. warnings of

  1072. wrong use.

  1073. Go against the

  1074. manual and the

  1075. design of the

  1076. car is a

  1077. violation of its

  1078. purpose and it

  1079. will destroy your

  1080. investment and it

  1081. could even destroy

  1082. you.

  1083. If God says

  1084. you must not

  1085. lie, you must

  1086. not steal, you

  1087. must not commit

  1088. sexual immorality,

  1089. you must forgive,

  1090. you must be

  1091. generous, you

  1092. are violating your

  1093. own design when

  1094. you don't.

  1095. Your own soul,

  1096. you're violating

  1097. your own nature.

  1098. You are moving

  1099. against yourself.

  1100. And it will

  1101. always lead to

  1102. loss of freedom

  1103. every time we

  1104. move against

  1105. ourselves.

  1106. Now I don't

  1107. have time to

  1108. unpack it here,

  1109. but recently I

  1110. preached a sermon

  1111. called Generous

  1112. Forgiveness that

  1113. shows how that

  1114. might work.

  1115. We are made in

  1116. the image of a

  1117. God who is a

  1118. forgiving God.

  1119. He calls us to

  1120. forgive when we

  1121. don't.

  1122. It momentarily

  1123. feels good not to

  1124. forgive.

  1125. forgive.

  1126. Let's be

  1127. frank.

  1128. It does

  1129. momentarily feel

  1130. good not to

  1131. forgive.

  1132. It's a power

  1133. move.

  1134. But lack of

  1135. forgiveness means

1136. we hang on to it

  1137. until eventually

  1138. bitterness grows and

1139. in the end we are

  1140. the ones hurting.

  1141. Hurting ourselves

  1142. as the original

  1143. hurt gets played

  1144. over and over

  1145. and over again in

  1146. our hearts and

  1147. we hurt ourselves

  1148. to the point that

  1149. other relationships

  1150. in our lives get

  1151. hurt as a result

  1152. of it.

  1153. The impulse of

  1154. the human heart

  1155. to resist God

  1156. is a movement

  1157. against our own

  1158. nature and it

  1159. means that we

  1160. are the ones

  1161. enslaved.

  1162. Another way the

  1163. Bible defines sin

  1164. is self-centeredness.

  1165. That is using

  1166. other people to

  1167. serve our own

  1168. needs first.

  1169. That's why the

  1170. modern idea of

  1171. freedom is so

  1172. popular because it

  1173. connects with that

  1174. desire of

  1175. self-centeredness to

  1176. use people for

  1177. our own sakes.

  1178. What that means

  1179. is we can either

  1180. be free in the

  1181. modern sense or

1182. you can be free in

  1183. a biblical sense to

  1184. love but you

  1185. can't do both.

  1186. You can't do

  1187. both.

  1188. You can't be free

  1189. and love.

  1190. You can't be free

  1191. in the modern sense

  1192. and love.

  1193. Self-centeredness

  1194. always destroys

  1195. love which is our

  1196. ultimate freedom.

  1197. There is no

  1198. greater liberation

  1199. than to feel and

  1200. to be loved well.

  1201. The affirmation that

  1202. comes from love

  1203. liberates us from

  1204. fears and from

  1205. self-doubts.

  1206. It frees us from

  1207. facing the world

  1208. alone.

  1209. Our friends,

  1210. our partners are

  1211. crucial to helping

  1212. us navigate the

  1213. hard times as

  1214. well as achieving

  1215. our goals.

  1216. But the minute we

  1217. get into such a

  1218. relationship is the

  1219. minute that we must

  1220. surrender some

  1221. freedoms to

  1222. experience the

  1223. freedom of love.

  1224. You can never

  1225. experience the

  1226. freedom of love

  1227. without relinquishing

  1228. your personal

  1229. freedom.

  1230. freedom.

  1231. That's a concept

  1232. that the modern

  1233. idea of love

  1234. knows nothing

  1235. about.

  1236. The more you

  1237. give up your

  1238. independence for

  1239. each other, the

  1240. deeper the love

  1241. will be and the

  1242. freer you will

  1243. feel.

  1244. If we have a

  1245. definition of

  1246. freedom that is

  1247. self-centered and

  1248. free from all

  1249. constraints, it

  1250. will destroy you,

  1251. it will destroy

  1252. your freedoms

  1253. because you

  1254. will never feel

  1255. loved.

  1256. You'll never

  1257. know the

  1258. freedom of

  1259. genuine love.

  1260. So who's

  1261. going to free

  1262. us from this

  1263. slavery to

  1264. sin?

  1265. That's my

  1266. next point.

  1267. Verses 35 to

  1268. 36, we saw

  1269. the source of

  1270. true freedom.

  1271. Now a slave

  1272. has no permanent

  1273. place in the

  1274. family, but a

  1275. son belongs to

  1276. it forever.

  1277. So if the

  1278. son sets you

  1279. free, you'll be

  1280. free indeed.

  1281. A servant

  1282. might get to

  1283. live in the

  1284. mansion, they

  1285. might get to

  1286. drive in the

  1287. limousine, they

  1288. might get to

  1289. accompany the

  1290. owners on

  1291. overseas trips,

  1292. and even have a

  1293. great relationship

  1294. with the boss.

  1295. Think of the

  1296. good guys in

  1297. Downton Abbey,

  1298. downstairs,

  1299. upstairs, get

  1300. on really well,

  1301. but they're not

  1302. part of the

  1303. family.

  1304. family.

  1305. And it's all

  1306. based on good

  1307. works.

  1308. If you do

  1309. your job, you

  1310. obey the rules,

  1311. you can exist in

  1312. that environment,

  1313. when you don't,

  1314. you're out.

  1315. Simple as that.

  1316. It's a different

  1317. relationship with the

  1318. children of the

  1319. owner.

  1320. One relationship

  1321. is based on good

  1322. works, the other

  1323. relationship is based

  1324. on unconditional

  1325. love.

  1326. love.

  1327. So it's crucial

  1328. that we understand

  1329. that Jesus is not

  1330. calling us here to

  1331. increasing religious

  1332. activity.

  1333. Religion in

  1334. slaves, only

  1335. unconditional love

  1336. will set us free.

  1337. The only way the

  1338. sin in our life

  1339. will be dealt

  1340. with is if the

  1341. son himself

  1342. sets slaves

  1343. free.

  1344. And we see

  1345. how he does

  1346. that right at

  1347. the end of

  1348. this conversation.

  1349. Verse 58,

  1350. very truly

  1351. I tell you,

  1352. Jesus answered

  1353. before Abraham

  1354. was born,

  1355. I am.

  1356. Now, for all

  1357. the grammar

  1358. people out

  1359. there, you

  1360. think, oh,

  1361. Jesus is, you

  1362. know, should

  1363. have spent more

  1364. time at school.

  1365. You know, we

  1366. expect him to

  1367. say before Abraham

  1368. was, I was.

  1369. When he says

  1370. I am, he was

  1371. making a very

  1372. clear connection

  1373. to the personal

  1374. name that God

  1375. gives to Moses

  1376. at the burning

  1377. bush when he

  1378. says, who are

  1379. you God?

  1380. And he just

  1381. says, I am

  1382. who I am.

  1383. Exodus 3.

  1384. And Jesus

  1385. takes that name

  1386. up upon himself

  1387. here.

  1388. And that's why

  1389. they picked up

  1390. stones to stone

  1391. Jesus immediately.

  1392. He is claiming

  1393. the divine name

  1394. for himself.

  1395. I am your

  1396. creator.

  1397. I am your

  1398. God.

  1399. I am the

  1400. logos, the

  1401. logic of the

  1402. universe.

  1403. And it's an

  1404. outrageous

  1405. claim.

  1406. Jesus here

  1407. claims to

  1408. be the

  1409. all-powerful,

  1410. all-present,

  1411. unrestricted,

  1412. totally free

  1413. God.

  1414. And how

  1415. does he set

  1416. us free?

  1417. Well, when

  1418. they picked up

  1419. stones to kill

  1420. him for

  1421. blasphemy,

  1422. that was just

  1423. simply a

  1424. foreshadow that

  1425. they would in

  1426. fact kill

  1427. him.

  1428. and it

  1429. will be his

  1430. plan to

  1431. be killed

  1432. in order

  1433. to make

  1434. us children

  1435. of God.

  1436. Jesus

  1437. Christ,

  1438. God the

  1439. Son,

  1440. giving up

  1441. his ultimate

  1442. and infinite

  1443. freedom,

  1444. came into

  1445. this creation

  1446. with all the

  1447. constraints of

  1448. human existence

  1449. sins, and

  1450. eventually

  1451. surrendered

  1452. himself to

  1453. death on

  1454. a cross,

  1455. and death

  1456. so that we,

  1457. the slaves,

  1458. slaves to

  1459. sin, could

  1460. have the

  1461. freedom of

  1462. being children

  1463. of God.

  1464. for

  1465. he was

  1466. bound to

  1467. a cross

  1468. and death

  1469. so that we

  1470. could be

  1471. free and

  1472. live.

  1473. We also

  1474. told in the

  1475. gospel that

  1476. as he died

  1477. for our sin,

  1478. the world

  1479. was plunged

  1480. into darkness.

  1481. As he

  1482. himself was

  1483. plunged into

  1484. unimaginable

  1485. darkness,

  1486. as he was

  1487. judged for the

  1488. sin of the

  1489. world and

  1490. all the

  1491. despair and

  1492. the rejection

  1493. that he

  1494. felt in

  1495. that moment

  1496. as he

  1497. moved into

  1498. death.

  1499. And he

  1500. did that

  1501. so that we

  1502. who exist in

  1503. the darkness

  1504. of sin,

  1505. who cannot

  1506. see his

  1507. glory and

  1508. his majesty,

  1509. might have

  1510. the light

  1511. of life.

  1512. That we

  1513. might see

  1514. his beauty,

  1515. that we

  1516. might see

  1517. that he is

  1518. the source

  1519. of true

  1520. freedom and

  1521. life forever.

  1522. From the

  1523. manger to

  1524. the cross,

  1525. Jesus Christ

  1526. gives up

  1527. his freedom

  1528. bit by

  1529. bit to

  1530. set us

  1531. free

  1532. from

  1533. slavery to

  1534. sin.

  1535. And once

  1536. we see

  1537. that what

  1538. he has

  1539. done for

  1540. us,

  1541. it

  1542. transforms

  1543. us from

  1544. a slave to

  1545. a child,

  1546. from duty

  1547. to choice.

  1548. this is

  1549. the truth

  1550. about the

  1551. sun that

  1552. causes the

  1553. blind to

  1554. see,

  1555. for darkness

  1556. to be

  1557. extinguished,

  1558. death to be

  1559. defeated,

  1560. eternal life

  1561. granted and

  1562. freedom

  1563. experienced.

  1564. lost.

  1565. I read the

  1566. story recently

  1567. of a

  1568. tandem

  1569. skydiving

  1570. incident that

  1571. went horribly

  1572. wrong.

  1573. A man was

  1574. on his

  1575. first ever

  1576. parachuting

  1577. jump celebrating

  1578. his daughter's

  1579. birthday,

  1580. absolutely

  1581. loving it,

  1582. looking forward

  1583. to it,

  1584. absolutely

  1585. loving it,

  1586. particularly he

  1587. said the

  1588. freedom of the

  1589. free fall was

  1590. just exhilarating

  1591. until 12,000

  1592. feet and

  1593. the instructor

  1594. pulled the

  1595. rip cord and

  1596. it didn't

  1597. work and

  1598. then the

  1599. instructor pulled

  1600. the reserve

  1601. cord and

  1602. it didn't

  1603. work and

  1604. at 12,000

  1605. feet all the

  1606. exhilaration went

  1607. into enslavery to

  1608. gravity in that

  1609. moment and

  1610. just before they

  1611. hit the ground

  1612. this young

  1613. experienced

  1614. skydiver

  1615. turned the

  1616. parachute

  1617. around and

  1618. put him

  1619. between the

  1620. ground and

  1621. this dad.

  1622. He died and

  1623. the dad

  1624. lived.

  1625. He sacrificed

  1626. himself.

  1627. If you are

  1628. not a

  1629. Christian sitting

  1630. in this room

  1631. or listening to

  1632. this online,

  1633. open your

  1634. eyes,

  1635. eyes,

  1636. eyes of your

  1637. heart and

  1638. realize that

  1639. the life you

  1640. are living is

  1641. enslaving.

  1642. You are not

  1643. free and you

  1644. know you're not

  1645. free.

  1646. Don't care what

  1647. possessions you've

  1648. got, you are

  1649. not free.

  1650. Death awaits

  1651. us all, the

  1652. final mockery of

  1653. everything that

  1654. we're built in

  1655. our lives.

  1656. open your eyes

  1657. and see that

  1658. only Jesus,

  1659. the one who

  1660. has died and

  1661. risen again,

  1662. only he can

  1663. set you free.

  1664. Understand that

  1665. he has absorbed

  1666. your punishment.

  1667. He has been

  1668. enslaved for you

  1669. and understand he

  1670. did it knowing,

  1671. knowing before he

  1672. created the world

  1673. that the parachute

  1674. that he was

  1675. taking on was

  1676. defective.

  1677. He knew it.

  1678. He sacrificed his

  1679. life for yours

  1680. and so I plead

  1681. with you,

  1682. come to him

  1683. today.

  1684. Come to him

  1685. today.

  1686. Take on his

  1687. liberating constraints

  1688. and be truly

  1689. free for the

  1690. first time in

  1691. your life and

  1692. free forever

  1693. without any

  1694. regrets.

  1695. If you're a

  1696. Christian in

  1697. this room,

  1698. online,

  1699. it is utter

  1700. foolishness for

  1701. you to envy

  1702. and pursue

  1703. not just envy

  1704. but to pursue

  1705. the so-called

  1706. freedom of

  1707. those who jump

  1708. out of the

  1709. airplane of

  1710. total negative

  1711. freedom and

  1712. sin and

  1713. revel for an

  1714. exhilarating

  1715. moment, just

  1716. for a moment,

  1717. in the free

  1718. fall of greed,

  1719. the free

  1720. fall of fame,

  1721. the free

  1722. fall of sex,

  1723. the free

  1724. fall of power,

  1725. the free

  1726. fall of comfort,

  1727. the free

  1728. fall of adventure,

  1729. the free

  1730. fall of security,

  1731. blind to sin.

  1732. And Jesus

  1733. and eternal

  1734. death.

  1735. How dare we

  1736. try to keep

  1737. a foot in

  1738. both worlds,

  1739. thinking that we

  1740. get a freedom

  1741. from both?

  1742. That is the

  1743. very definition

  1744. of fickle

  1745. faith in

  1746. John 8 31.

  1747. Ascenting to

  1748. Jesus and

  1749. living as I

  1750. choose.

  1751. Jesus.

  1752. And if you

  1753. read through

  1754. John chapter

    John 8 chapter mention

  1755. 8, Jesus

  1756. condemns it.

  1757. I call you to

  1758. surrender.

  1759. I call you to

  1760. take your next

  1761. step.

  1762. Too many want to

  1763. believe Jesus but

  1764. not fully surrender

  1765. to him.

  1766. It's the very

  1767. definition of

  1768. fickle faith.

  1769. When we here at

  1770. St. Paul's

  1771. consistently ask

  1772. you, what is

  1773. your next step?

  1774. Are you taking

  1775. your next step?

  1776. We are asking

  1777. what is the

  1778. next liberating

  1779. constraint that

  1780. you're going to

  1781. take on for

  1782. your life?

  1783. That's what we're

  1784. asking.

  1785. How are you

  1786. going to conform

  1787. more and more

  1788. to God's

  1789. word?

  1790. Back in verse

  1791. 31 when Jesus

  1792. says to these

  1793. people, his

  1794. disciples are

  1795. those who hold

  1796. to his teaching.

  1797. The word hold

  1798. means to abide

  1799. in, to

  1800. align your

  1801. life with

  1802. repeatedly

  1803. again and

  1804. again and

  1805. again and

  1806. again.

  1807. If you are

  1808. stuck in a

  1809. rut, the

  1810. very first

  1811. thing I'm

  1812. calling you to

  1813. do is to

  1814. repent.

  1815. Repent.

  1816. Align yourself

  1817. to God's word.

  1818. Take God's

  1819. word into

  1820. your life and

  1821. live into how

  1822. he has designed

  1823. you.

  1824. It is taking

  1825. on his

  1826. liberating

  1827. constraints.

  1828. And as we

  1829. do align

  1830. ourselves to

  1831. the Logos

  1832. himself, our

  1833. design, we

  1834. are fully

  1835. free, fully

  1836. free in its

  1837. truest sense.

  1838. and

  1839. you

  1840. do by

  1841. I

  1842. think
