  1. Good morning, everyone. Great to be at church with you this morning. My name is Steve, the senior pastor here.

  2. And if you've got your Bibles open there, that'd be fantastic.

  3. And I'll take a quick look at that passage, which is in front of us in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  4. I read an article this morning by a journalist who said that we are drawing the curtain on 2023 as we celebrate Christmas.

  5. And it's a year that you really, that you could only really describe as bizarro year.

  6. A year of great uncertainty and turmoil.

  7. They went on and listed a whole heap of things that would classify as unusual, bizarre things that governments around the world are doing.

  8. But also very mindful of a, we're closing the year at a time of great turmoil.

  9. It's not far from our minds, conflicts in the Middle East, but also in Ukraine and Russia.

  10. There have been tens of thousands upon tens of thousands of lives that have been lost in these conflicts.

  11. Communities fractured, people stricken in life.

  12. And they're just two of the big ones in terms of conflicts that are in the media in our world in this last year.

  13. In 2023 alone, there were 114 wars globally.

  14. We just really hear about two of them.

  15. 114.

  16. The definition of a war is an active conflict where over 1,000 lives have lost.

  17. And there's been 114 of them in this world this year.

  18. Of the past 3,400 years of recorded history, there has only been 268 years war-free.

  19. 268 years with no recorded war.

  20. That is a meagre 8% of recorded history.

  21. That's all.

  22. For those who think that religion is to blame for that, of all those recorded wars in history,

  23. less than 7% have anything to do with religion.

  24. Less than 7%.

  25. In more recent history, from 1945 to 2015,

  26. there were only 26 days of no recorded war somewhere in the world.

  27. 26 days.

  28. So what are we to make then of the message that we just heard?

  29. From Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  30. From 2,000 years ago.

  31. That at the heart of Christmas,

  32. which half of the world's population is celebrating right now,

  33. what are we to make of the promise of peace?

  34. It was right there.

  35. Verse 14.

  36. Glory to God in the highest,

  37. and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.

  38. Peace.

  39. Peace.

  40. That's something that we desire.

  41. We desire peace in our relationships.

  42. Our world is in desperate need for peace.

  43. And frankly,

  44. many of us would love peace deep inside of our hearts,

  45. in the recesses of our hearts.

  46. We're in turmoil and conflict with ourselves.

  47. And the Bible promises peace,

  48. and that's the reason for Christmas, we are told.

  49. To bring peace to humanity.

  50. So what is this peace that the birth of Jesus promises,

  51. and how do we get it?

  52. That's the three things I kind of want to, you know,

  53. tackle this morning really briefly.

  54. Say three things.

  55. I want to treasure the message of Christmas,

  56. and when we do, we find peace,

  57. and when we find peace, we start to live fearlessly.

  58. They're the three things I want to do

  59. as we look at Luke 2 this morning.

  60. So first of all,

  61. treasuring the message of Christmas.

  62. Really hearing the Christmas story

  63. isn't easy to do when you've heard it so, so many times.

  64. I mean, so many times.

  65. There is an over-familiarity to the story of Christmas,

  66. and to hear well, we know,

  67. is the important thing in life.

  68. Not just important in this passage.

  69. We are told here that the shepherds

  70. were told something by the angels.

  71. Then they went and saw

  72. that it was as they were told.

  73. Then we are told in verse 17

  74. that when they saw Jesus,

  75. they then went and spread the word

  76. about everything that they had heard about Jesus.

  77. Verse 18 we read,

  78. And all who heard it

  79. were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

  80. And there is an even deeper hearing.

  81. In verse 19, it says,

  82. Mary treasured up all these things

  83. and pondered them in her heart.

  84. This is more than just merely hearing some news.

  85. You know, we all hear news every day

  86. and on the most part,

  87. it has no impact on us at all.

  88. Those with children

  89. know the experience of telling them something

  90. and it's not being followed through with.

  91. Probably those with husbands as well.

  92. Did we hear the information?

  93. Did they hear the information?

  94. Yes.

  95. Heard the information?

  96. Did it get our attention?

  97. Do we think through the implications?

  98. I mean, really understand

  99. of what we were told?

  100. Well, on the most part, no.

  101. The first thing we are told here

  102. is that God speaks to and through the ordinary.

  103. The shepherds get an angel

  104. and everyone else gets a shepherd.

  105. Just ordinary, low-class,

  106. first-century shepherds.

  107. Secondly, we are told

  108. that Mary is a model for us

  109. on how to hear.

  110. She heard the news from the angel

  111. and then she hears the news

  112. from the shepherds.

  113. And we are told she treasures it.

  114. She ponders in her heart

  115. what she has just heard.

  116. The word ponder here

  117. means to put into context,

  118. to think it through,

  119. to make the connections

  120. between what I'm hearing

  121. and the rest of my life.

  122. How does it explain my life?

  123. What does it mean for the way I'm living?

  124. It is focused mental discipline.

  125. Treasuring is also a little bit more emotional

  126. than just mere study.

  127. It means to keep this news alive.

  128. It is to keep the fire burning,

  129. to relish it,

  130. to savor it,

  131. turn it over and over

  132. and get in my mind

  133. heart

  134. to see how it connects

  135. with my life.

  136. That is,

  137. what we are told here

  138. is Mary doesn't

  139. just know the news

  140. of the arrival of God intellectually.

  141. She fans the flame of it

  142. in her heart

  143. by pondering it again

  144. and again

  145. and again

  146. and again

  147. and making connections

  148. in the rest of her life.

  149. She takes this news

  150. into the centre

  151. of her being

  152. until it means

  153. everything to her.

  154. This hearing that she has

  155. is an attitude

  156. of the heart.

  157. We shouldn't underestimate

  158. our ability

  159. to hear

  160. and also

  161. not to hear

  162. the good news

  163. of Christmas.

  164. We don't really want

  165. to be like the crowd

  166. who just marvels

  167. at this birth.

  168. We want to be like Mary

  169. and ponder

  170. and treasure

  171. the good news of Jesus

  172. and the reason is

  173. is because when we do hear well

  174. we discover

  175. the remarkable promise

  176. of peace.

  177. Have a look at it there

  178. if you've got your Bibles

  179. verses 13 and 14.

  180. Suddenly

  181. a great company

  182. of the heavenly hosts

  183. appeared with the angel

  184. praising God

  185. and saying

  186. glory to God

  187. in the highest heaven

  188. and on earth

  189. peace to those

  190. on whom

  191. his favour rests.

  192. It's a very

  193. specific

  194. promise

  195. of peace.

  196. It's peace

  197. for those

  198. to whom

  199. God's grace

  200. and favour

  201. and mercy

  202. rest.

  203. On the surface

  204. it looks like

  205. well this is just

  206. a promise

  207. for a select group

  208. of people.

  209. That's all this is.

  210. But you have to read it

  211. in the light

  212. of verse 10.

  213. The angels

  214. said to them

  215. do not be afraid

  216. I bring you

  217. good news

  218. that will cause

  219. great joy

  220. for all

  221. people.

  222. Today

  223. in the town

  224. of David

  225. a saviour

  226. has been born

  227. to you

  228. he is the

  229. Messiah

  230. the Lord.

  231. So what

  232. Luke

  233. the writer

  234. of this

  235. the recorder

  236. of this biography

  237. is saying here

  238. is that one of the

  239. great benefits

  240. secrets of grasping

  241. the good news

  242. about God's grace

  243. to us in Jesus

  244. Christ

  245. at Christmas

  246. is that you now

  247. have peace with God.

  248. That's crucial.

  249. That is so crucial

  250. because one of the

  251. great

  252. and important

  253. themes

  254. of the

  255. New Testament

  256. is that

  257. before we embrace

  258. God's grace

  259. grace and mercy

  260. we are

  261. in fact

  262. at war

  263. with him.

  264. Most people

  265. don't believe

  266. that.

  267. Most people

  268. have not grasped

  269. that aspect

  270. of the Christmas

  271. story.

  272. Many would say

  273. that they just

  274. don't simply

  275. don't believe

  276. in God

  277. or that they

  278. are indifferent

  279. to God.

  280. Hardly

  281. anyone

  282. wanders around

  283. and says

  284. I'm hostile

  285. towards God.

  286. I'm in

  287. open conflict

  288. with him.

  289. And yet

  290. the New Testament

  291. puts it like that.

  292. It says

  293. the mind

  294. governed by

  295. the flesh

  296. is hostile

  297. to God.

  298. It does

  299. not submit

  300. to God.

  301. That is

  302. at the heart

  303. of Christianity

  304. before it's

  305. great news

  306. of God's love

  307. is the

  308. reality

  309. of open

  310. warfare

  311. against God.

  312. Our

  313. relationship

  314. with God

  315. is not

  316. disbelief

  317. and indifference

  318. it's actually

  319. hostility

  320. towards him.

  321. And let me

  322. just be clear

  323. this is for

  324. both the

  325. religious person

  326. and the

  327. irreligious

  328. person.

  329. Open

  330. hostility

  331. overtly

  332. asserting

  333. our independence

  334. from our

  335. creator.

  336. Both the

  337. religious

  338. and the

  339. irreligious

  340. are openly

  341. declaring

  342. they want

  343. to live

  344. life

  345. their way.

  346. The

  347. religious

  348. person

  349. covertly

  350. asserts

  351. their

  352. independence

  353. from God.

  354. You know

  355. they do

  356. religious

  357. activities

  358. you know

  359. they turn

  360. up to

  361. church

  362. they read

  363. the Bible

  364. they pray

  365. try and

  366. follow the

  367. Ten Commandments

  368. that kind

  369. of stuff

  370. try to be

  371. a good

  372. person

  373. with the

  374. expectation

  375. that it

  376. wins God's

  377. favour towards

  378. them in some

  379. way.

  380. It's an

  381. attempt to

  382. control

  383. my life

  384. and my

  385. relationship

  386. with God.

  387. It's a

  388. declaration that

  389. I ultimately

  390. do not

  391. trust God.

  392. No matter

  393. who we are

  394. in our

  395. nature we

  396. are hostile

  397. to God

  398. and particularly

  399. in the

  400. western world

  401. we are

  402. committed to

  403. the idea

  404. that we

  405. will only

  406. ever be

  407. truly

  408. deeply

  409. happy

  410. if we

  411. are in

  412. charge

  413. of our

  414. own

  415. lives.

  416. The

  417. mark of a

  418. real Christian

  419. is that they

  420. come to see

  421. the hostility.

  422. They've seen

  423. not only that

  424. they have done

  425. wrong things

  426. but even

  427. the right

  428. things that

  429. they've done

  430. have been

  431. done for the

  432. wrong reasons

  433. the wrong

  434. motives.

  435. Christmas

  436. is the

  437. beginning of

  438. what God

  439. does for us

  440. through Jesus

  441. Christ to

  442. initiate a

  443. peace treaty.

  444. God's grace

  445. to us and

  446. peace go

  447. together.

  448. Those who

  449. grasp the

  450. grace of

  451. God are

  452. those who

  453. have peace

  454. with God

  455. and at the

  456. very least

  457. it means

  458. Christmas

  459. sorry at the

  460. very least it

  461. means that for

  462. Christians we

  463. ought to be

  464. peacemakers.

  465. At the

  466. very least

  467. peacemakers

  468. are people

  469. who have

  470. admitted their

  471. wrongs, their

  472. flaws, their

  473. hostility towards

  474. God, they

  475. have swallowed

  476. their pride, they

  477. have surrendered

  478. to their God,

  479. they've accepted

  480. his grace and

  481. his goodness and

  482. they've found

  483. peace with him.

  484. And when that

  485. happens between

  486. you and God

  487. it means that you

  488. actually go out

  489. into a world and

  490. you do it with

  491. others.

  492. A

  493. Christian

  494. is someone

  495. who knows

  496. how to admit

  497. that they are

  498. wrong,

  499. how to

  500. forgive,

  501. how to

  502. reconcile

  503. because that

  504. is what God

  505. has done for

  506. them.

  507. And we

  508. become peacemakers

  509. between races

  510. and classes,

  511. family members,

  512. neighbours,

  513. colleagues.

  514. Peace comes

  515. to those who

  516. grasp God's

  517. grace and

  518. threw them

  519. to the

  520. world.

  521. So,

  522. treasure the

  523. message,

  524. discover the

  525. peace,

  526. and thirdly,

  527. being at peace

  528. with God

  529. leads to

  530. fearless living.

  531. I get that

  532. from verses

  533. 8 and 10,

  534. have a look

  535. at it.

  536. Those,

  537. sorry,

  538. there were

  539. shepherds

  540. living out in

  541. the fields

  542. nearby,

  543. keeping watch

  544. over their

  545. flocks at

  546. night.

  547. An angel of

  548. the Lord

  549. appeared to

  550. them and

  551. the glory

  552. of the Lord

  553. shone around

  554. them and

  555. they were

  556. terrified.

  557. But the

  558. angel said

  559. to them,

  560. do not

  561. be afraid,

  562. I bring

  563. you good

  564. news that

  565. will cause

  566. great joy

  567. for all

  568. people.

  569. The

  570. shepherds

  571. were terrified.

  572. Angels

  573. tell them,

  574. don't be

  575. afraid,

  576. because I

  577. bring you

  578. good news.

  579. That's the

  580. reason why

  581. you shouldn't

  582. be afraid,

  583. because I've

  584. got good

  585. news for

  586. you.

  587. Embracing

  588. the good

  589. news of

  590. Christmas

  591. means that

  592. we can

  593. be at

  594. peace and

  595. we can

  596. live

  597. fearlessly.

  598. You see,

  599. what normally

  600. happens in

  601. the Bible

  602. is that

  603. when God

  604. shows up,

  605. people are

  606. terrified.

  607. First time

  608. it ever

  609. happened was

  610. in the

  611. Garden of

  612. Eden with

  613. Adam and

  614. Eve.

  615. After they

  616. sinned,

  617. before sin

  618. was in the

  619. picture,

  620. before there

  621. was hostility

  622. with God,

  623. there was

  624. no fear.

  625. When we

  626. have perfect

  627. relationship

  628. with God,

  629. there is no

  630. fear in

  631. life.

  632. that's so

  633. crucial as

  634. we come to

  635. the end of

  636. 2023,

  637. because most

  638. of us come

  639. to Christmas

  640. living lives

  641. of some

  642. element of

  643. fear and

  644. anxiety.

  645. The fear of

  646. rejection,

  647. the fear of

  648. failure,

  649. the fear of

  650. bad things

  651. happening,

  652. the fear of

  653. the future,

  654. the fear of

  655. death.

  656. We live

  657. each day

  658. trying to

  659. earn our

  660. self-worth

  661. and people's

  662. respect,

  663. and if we

  664. don't constantly

  665. get affirmation

  666. and love from

  667. people,

  668. we just

  669. die inside.

  670. We are

  671. slaves to

  672. our performance

  673. and other

  674. people's

  675. perceptions of

  676. us.

  677. It's a life

  678. of fear,

  679. knowing that

  680. ultimately we

  681. cannot control

  682. our lives.

  683. Deep down

  684. in the

  685. recesses of

  686. our hearts,

  687. we are in

  688. conflict with

  689. ourselves.

  690. It's hard

  691. enough trying

  692. to manage

  693. other people's

  694. perception of

  695. us,

  696. us,

  697. let alone

  698. our own

  699. perceptions

  700. of us.

  701. Every time

  702. something

  703. unexpected

  704. happens to

  705. us,

  706. it's just

  707. another

  708. reminder

  709. that we

  710. are not

  711. in

  712. control.

  713. We're

  714. especially

  715. afraid of

  716. death.

  717. In death,

  718. we lose

  719. absolutely

  720. everything.

  721. We are

  722. filled with

  723. fear,

  724. but we

  725. fill our

  726. lives with

  727. distractions in

  728. order to not

  729. think about

  730. it.

  731. Distractions

  732. so that we

  733. can't listen

  734. well to

  735. the good

  736. news and

  737. find peace.

  738. We are

  739. our own

  740. masters and

  741. we are

  742. unqualified

  743. for the

  744. job.

  745. And when

  746. push comes

  747. to shove,

  748. we know

  749. it.

  750. We have

  751. taken God's

  752. crown and

  753. placed it

  754. in our own

  755. heads, so

  756. to speak,

  757. and we

  758. are way

  759. over our

  760. heads.

  761. We are

  762. usurposed

  763. to a

  764. throne that

  765. we don't

  766. deserve, nor

  767. are qualified

  768. for, and

  769. on the first

  770. Christmas, the

  771. real king

  772. turned up, and

  773. we are

  774. terrified.

  775. His beauty

  776. shows us

  777. our

  778. ugliness.

  779. His power

  780. shows us

  781. our impotence.

  782. His light

  783. shows us

  784. our darkness.

  785. us.

  786. And yet

  787. his grace

  788. to us

  789. shows us

  790. the solution.

  791. Verse 11,

  792. again, a

  793. saviour has

  794. been born

  795. to you.

  796. He is the

  797. Messiah, the

  798. Lord.

  799. He is the

  800. saviour of

  801. the human

  802. race.

  803. To have

  804. peace and

  805. to live

  806. fearlessly, we

  807. need to

  808. abandon

  809. every form

  810. of self

  811. salvation and

  812. rest in his

  813. salvation.

  814. salvation.

  815. The baby

  816. born in the

  817. manger, we

  818. are told

  819. here in

  820. verse 11, is

  821. the Lord.

  822. And the

  823. word Lord

  824. there in the

  825. original language

  826. is a direct

  827. translation from

  828. the Hebrew

  829. word Yahweh.

  830. Yahweh.

  831. It's a

  832. significant word.

  833. It's the

  834. covenant name

  835. of God in

  836. the Old

  837. Testament.

  838. The baby

  839. born in the

  840. manger is not

  841. just a saviour

  842. or a sage.

  843. He is the

  844. creator of

  845. the universe.

  846. That's what

  847. that word

  848. Lord means.

  849. If the

  850. God who

  851. made all

  852. things is

  853. prepared to

  854. humble himself

  855. and to

  856. come to

  857. earth, for

  858. us he is

  859. trustworthy.

  860. Is that

  861. plausible?

  862. way back in

  863. 1961, the

  864. Soviet Union

  865. put a man

  866. in space for

  867. the first

  868. time.

  869. 27-year-old

  870. Yuri Gagarin

  871. orbited the

  872. earth for

  873. about 90

  874. minutes, an

  875. hour and a

  876. half, something

  877. like that.

  878. When he

  879. came back to

  880. earth, the

  881. head of the

  882. Soviet Union at

  883. time, Nikita

  884. Khrushchev, said

  885. that we have

  886. sent someone

  887. into space and

  888. we did not

  889. find God.

  890. God does not

  891. exist.

  892. There's no God

  893. up there.

  894. The Oxford

  895. scholar C.S.

  896. Lewis read

  897. that and

  898. fired off an

  899. article in

  900. response called

  901. the seeing

  902. eye.

  903. This is part

  904. of what he

  905. wrote.

  906. The Russians, I

  907. am told, report

  908. that they have

  909. not found God

  910. in outer space.

  911. Looking for

  912. God or

  913. heaven by

  914. exploring space

  915. is like reading

  916. or seeing all

  917. of Shakespeare's

  918. plays in the

  919. hope that you'll

  920. find Shakespeare

  921. as one of the

  922. characters.

  923. Shakespeare is

  924. in one sense

  925. present at

  926. every moment

  927. in every one

  928. of his plays.

  929. But he's

  930. never present

  931. in the same

  932. way that

  933. Princess Hamlet

  934. is.

  935. My point is

  936. that if God

  937. does exist,

  938. he is related

  939. to the universe

  940. more as an

  941. author is

  942. related to a

  943. play than as

  944. one object in

  945. the universe is

  946. related to another

  947. object in the

  948. universe.

  949. He went on to

  950. ask the question,

  951. how then do we

  952. find God or

  953. also avoid

  954. God?

  955. He first

  956. answered how

  957. we avoid

  958. God and

  959. maybe at

  960. the end of

  961. this crazy

  962. year of 2023

  963. this might be

  964. a pertinent

  965. message for

  966. you.

  967. He says,

  968. avoid silence.

  969. This is how to

  970. avoid God.

  971. Avoid silence,

  972. avoid solitude,

  973. concentrate on

  974. money, sex,

  975. status, health,

  976. and your own

  977. grievances.

  978. Keep the radio

  979. turned on or

  980. the television or

  981. YouTube or

  982. whatever it is

  983. he might have

  984. said if he was

  985. existing right

  986. now.

  987. Live in a

  988. crowd.

  989. Use plenty of

  990. sedation.

  991. If you must

  992. read books,

  993. select those

  994. books very

  995. carefully, but

  996. you'd be better

  997. off just to

  998. stick with the

  999. newspapers.

  1000. To some,

  1001. God is

  1002. discoverable

  1003. everywhere.

  1004. To others,

  1005. nowhere.

  1006. It depends

  1007. on the

  1008. attitude of

  1009. your heart.

  1010. And I

  1011. would add it

  1012. would depend

  1013. on the

  1014. level of

  1015. hostility that

  1016. you have

  1017. towards God.

  1018. Lewis went

  1019. on to write

  1020. that he had

  1021. less advice on

  1022. how to find

  1023. God, he

  1024. said because it

  1025. was God who

  1026. came to find

  1027. us on the

  1028. very first

  1029. Christmas.

  1030. His point

  1031. was that the

  1032. only way to

  1033. know God who

  1034. made everything

  1035. is if this

  1036. God writes

  1037. himself into

  1038. his own

  1039. story, as a

  1040. character in

  1041. his own story.

  1042. It's the only

  1043. way that we

  1044. would ever know

  1045. him.

  1046. If he chooses

  1047. to write himself

  1048. into the history

  1049. of the world

  1050. that he has

  1051. made, and

  1052. that is what

  1053. C.S.

  1054. Lewis says,

  1055. is the claim

  1056. of Christian,

  1057. the claim of

  1058. Christmas.

  1059. It's the

  1060. infinitely wonderful

  1061. moment of

  1062. Christmas, that

  1063. God writes

  1064. himself into

  1065. his own

  1066. story.

  1067. It means

  1068. that God

  1069. looks at the

  1070. world that he

  1071. created, he

  1072. could see the

  1073. terrible trouble

  1074. that humanity

  1075. was in, the

  1076. hostility, the

  1077. chaos, the

  1078. conflict, the

  1079. war, both

  1080. externally and

  1081. internally, and

  1082. he wrote

  1083. himself into the

  1084. history as

  1085. Jesus Christ, the

  1086. saviour of the

  1087. world.

  1088. And he

  1089. didn't come

  1090. simply to

  1091. embrace us, but

  1092. to take our

  1093. hostility upon

  1094. himself and to

  1095. die for us.

  1096. He lost his

  1097. peace so that

  1098. we can have

  1099. peace forever.

  1100. And so I'm not

  1101. sure what 2023

  1102. has been like

  1103. for you.

  1104. Many people are

  1105. claiming it's the

  1106. hope, the year

  1107. that they hope

  1108. never to revisit.

  1109. Look to

  1110. Christmas at the

  1111. end of the year

  1112. and find peace.

  1113. To the degree

  1114. that we grab

  1115. hold of the

  1116. good news and

  1117. ponder it and

  1118. treasure it and

  1119. play it over, to

  1120. the degree that

  1121. our fears will

  1122. diminish and

  1123. peace will rise

  1124. in our hearts.

  1125. What's your

  1126. next step?

  1127. Maybe it might

  1128. be just to

  1129. wander across,

  1130. literally take

  1131. your next step

  1132. and wander across

  1133. the atrium in

  1134. church here and

  1135. you'll find some

  1136. free resources such

  1137. as the case for

  1138. Christmas.

  1139. Is Christmas

  1140. believable?

  1141. Christmas uncut?

  1142. First part, maybe

  1143. it might be simply

  1144. this Christmas

  1145. season to grow a

  1146. bit of quietness

  1147. and a bit of

  1148. solitude and

  1149. ponder the

  1150. message.

  1151. Merry Christmas.
