  1. Good morning everyone and happy new year to you all as we begin 2024. It was about this time last year when I stood up here that I said that one of my new year's resolutions was to run a marathon.

  2. Last year that is. And my second resolution was to do it in a personal best time. Given that it was my first ever marathon, it was if I achieved the first one I would achieve the second one automatically, which I did in July last year.

  3. Having run that marathon, by the end of July, in fact, before I'd even finished the marathon, I resolved never to run another one again.

  4. However, I do want to encourage you today to run. That's my goal today, is to encourage you to take up running if you have not yet taken up running and to particularly run in 2024.

  5. Not a marathon, I wouldn't necessarily encourage us all to do that at all, but in fact to run the race of faith in Jesus Christ.

  6. So if you're someone who takes notes, I've really got four points. If you've got the translator version in front of you right now, you'll see three points there.

  7. That's because I gave it to John yesterday and I woke up early this morning in order to add a fourth point.

  8. So my four points is to run. Secondly, to run with Jonathan Edwards. Thirdly, to plan your run. And fourthly, lastly, how to run.

  9. That's the four points for the direction we're going to take this morning.

  10. So first of all, run. New Testament letter to the Hebrews. Ash has mentioned it, just read out a section of it just then.

  11. It was written to a bunch of Christians who were losing sight of what it meant to be disciples and to follow Jesus.

  12. The most famous section of this letter is chapter 11, verse 1, through to chapter 12, verse 3.

    Isaiah 11:1

  13. It's the section about the great examples of faith from the past.

  14. Chapter 12 refers to it as the great cloud of witnesses who were there, if you like, as in the stadium, watching us compete in the race of faith.

  15. The writer is hoping to inspire the Hebrews, the recipients of this letter, with examples of those who had gone before them as faithful disciples of Jesus.

  16. And chapter 12, verse 1, is the main application of the section.

  17. So open your Bibles, it'd be great if you followed along with me here.

  18. It's the main application.

  19. The word can mean race.

  20. It can also mean a struggle.

  21. It can mean a fight.

  22. It can mean a contest.

  23. As difficult as a marathon is to run, I think those of us who have lived long enough realise that life is fundamentally harder than just running a marathon.

  24. It's a contest.

  25. It's a struggle.

  26. It's a fight.

  27. And the life of faith is, in fact, a fight.

  28. In fact, this whole section in chapter 12, if you continue to read on, talks about enduring.

  29. It talks about shedding blood.

  30. It's all within the imagery of the Olympics.

  31. It's all within the imagery of fighting, struggling.

  32. Endure is what Hebrews 12 is telling us to do.

  33. Fight the good fight.

  34. Be disciplined.

  35. Train hard.

  36. Run the race set before you.

  37. Of course, we know that that operates in a physical sphere as well for us, not just in the spiritual sphere.

  38. Doctors will tell you that you are not going to live a good life, a healthy life, or even a long life, unless you are willing to exert yourself and sweat.

  39. But our bodies get to a point where they will not be able to perform normal daily exertions, unless there are times of extraordinary exertions called exercise.

  40. So what a command to a church here that was getting old, was settling into the world, losing its wartime mentality, starting to drift through life without focus, without vigilance, without energy.

  41. Their hands were growing weak.

  42. Their knees were feeble, according to verse 12 of chapter 12.

  43. It was just easier to meander in the crowd of life than to run the race of faith.

  44. Or to treasure Jesus and pursue their joy.

  45. And so against this mentality, having spent chapters after chapters of elevating the majesty and the splendor of Jesus Christ,

  46. he then calls the church to endure, to persevere, to run, to fight, to be alert, to be strengthened.

  47. Don't drift.

  48. Don't neglect.

  49. Don't be sluggish.

  50. Don't stroll.

  51. Don't meander.

  52. Don't wander aimlessly.

  53. Run as in a race with a finish line, with everything in life hanging on that finish line.

  54. Fight the fight of faith on the basis of Christ's spectacular death and resurrection.

  55. Now, we need help here.

  56. We need help in the modern world because we are convinced in the modern world that the chief aim of life is our happiness and our comfort.

  57. On the most part, we are busy, incredibly busy, with secondary to-do lists and neglecting the importance of working hard to grow in treasuring Jesus.

  58. Growing in God's faith and growing in God's faith and the gospel joy.

  59. And the gospel joy that comes as a result of that.

  60. So I want to do something here this morning, which I've done before in the past.

  61. I want to turn to someone who, if Hebrews 11 was taken right through into the 18th century, this man would be included in this list of those who have run the race as part of the cloud of witnesses.

  62. And I want to encourage us to run with Jonathan Edwards.

  63. Jonathan Edwards was born on the 5th of October, 1703.

  64. He died March 22, 1758.

  65. He was a preacher, a theologian, a philosopher, a missionary to First Nations people in America.

  66. And he was the first president of Princeton University.

  67. Edwards is considered now by both secular and Christian historians alike to be the greatest Protestant thinker America has ever produced.

  68. He was a small-town pastor for 23 years in a church of about 600 people, because back in those days, everyone went to church.

  69. He was a missionary to First Nation peoples for seven years.

  70. First president of Princeton for a few months before he died.

  71. He reared 11 faithful children, giving credit to his wife on that one as well.

  72. And the more you understand his life, you give even more credit to his wife on that one as well.

  73. He reared 11 faithful children.

  74. He worked without the help of electricity, without emails, word processors, computers, or even sufficient paper to write on.

  75. He lived only till he was 54, which I'm turning in a few months myself.

  76. Yet this man, in such a short life, led one of the greatest spiritual awakenings of modern times.

  77. He wrote theological books that administered to people for more than 250 years.

  78. And did more for the modern missionary movement, the global advancement of Christianity, than any single person of his generation.

  79. A remarkable individual.

  80. Now, as a teenager, Edwards wrote down, a teenager mind you, right?

  81. This is before social media and gaming.

  82. And he wrote down 70 resolutions to govern his life.

  83. And to help cultivate growth as a disciple of Jesus.

  84. 70 resolutions.

  85. He went on to reread this list at least once a week to keep his mind focused and renewed.

  86. These resolutions sustained his vision for God and drove him to persevere and grow as a disciple of Jesus.

  87. I've printed out maybe 10, 15 copies of those resolutions.

  88. They're not hard to access online.

  89. You can grab them online and you'll see the remarkable focus of this man.

  90. And my prayer for us this morning is that we will see something here that will give us a new sense of zeal and commitment to the most important things of life.

  91. And there are four broad exhortations, if you like, from the life of Edwards that I want to focus on this morning.

  92. I'm not going to go through all 70 resolutions.

  93. You'll be grateful to know that.

  94. The first thing I want to say is Edwards exhorts us to radical single-mindedness in our occupation of spiritual things.

  95. Two of his resolutions that he made in 1723.

  96. He was almost 20 when he wrote these.

  97. Resolution number 44.

  98. Resolved.

  99. That no other end but religion.

  100. Now when he uses the word religion, what he means by that is the Christian faith.

  101. Resolved.

  102. No other end but religion shall have any influence at all in any of my actions.

  103. And that no action shall be in the least circumstance any otherwise than the religious end will carry it.

  104. Number 61.

  105. Resolved.

  106. Resolved.

  107. Resolved.

  108. Resolved.

  109. Resolved.

  110. Resolved.

  111. That I will not give way to that listlessness which I find unbends and relaxes my mind from being fully and fixedly set on religion, whatever excuse I may have for it.

  112. I think that's the application of the Apostle Paul's principle in 2 Timothy 2 verses 4 to 6.

    2 Timothy 2:4–6

  113. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs.

  114. He wants to please his commanding officer.

  115. Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules.

  116. The hardworking farmer shall be the first to receive share of the crops.

  117. What happens for many of us in the busyness and the difficulty of life is we start to give way to amusements and diversions and hobbies just to survive emotionally.

  118. They don't just become helpful things.

  119. They become our way to survive emotionally.

  120. The evenings and the days off are filled up with harmless, enjoyable diversions and what happens is before too much longer the whole focus shifts.

  121. The radical urgency of the kingdom priorities fade.

  122. The wartime mentality shifts to a peacetime mentality.

  123. The lifestyle starts to get cushy.

  124. The all-consuming singleness of vision of life evaporates.

  125. I want to ask you, in all seriousness, how many Christians do you know, how many Christians do you spend time with, who are laboring, and I use that word intentionally, laboring to know God.

  126. Who are striving earnestly to study of the scriptures and prayer to enlarge their vision of God.

  127. So the first exhortation from Edwards is to be radically single-minded in our occupation of spiritual things.

  128. Secondly, Edwards exhorts us to labor earnestly to know the scriptures in particular, to know the Bible in particular.

  129. Don't get your vision of God secondhand.

  130. This is Edwards' example himself.

  131. An early biographer of Edwards said that he came to his pastorate, his church in Northampton.

  132. He says he had studied theology, not chiefly in systems or commentaries, but from the Bible.

  133. Edwards once said in a sermon,

  134. Be assiduous.

  135. That is, I had to look that up.

  136. Showing great care and perseverance.

  137. Be assiduous in reading the holy scriptures.

  138. This is the fountain whence all knowledge and divinity must be derived.

  139. Therefore, let not this treasure lie by you neglected.

  140. He was an amazing example in his own diligence in studying the Bible himself.

  141. One example.

  142. I think you can see this Bible from memory in a museum in Germany, if I'm correct.

  143. He grabbed a Bible.

  144. He took the binding off the Bible, separated every page of the Bible,

  145. put a blank sheet in between each page and bound the whole thing back up again

  146. and drew a line down the middle of every blank page.

  147. And the blank page, the two columns were just filled with notes, page after page after page,

  148. notes of the scriptures as he studied them.

  149. And then when they were filled, he turned it sideways

  150. and wrote over the top of his notes the other direction.

  151. I think there is reason to believe that Edwards really did follow on his 28th resolution.

  152. Resolved.

  153. To study the scriptures so steadily, constantly and frequently

  154. as that I may find and painfully perceive myself to grow in the knowledge of the same.

  155. I find this resolution to be a rebuke.

  156. How many of us have a plan of growing in the grasp of the whole terrain of scriptures?

  157. I don't mean the terrain of just the Bible verses to prop up my theological preferences.

  158. I mean the whole terrain of scripture.

  159. How many of us have a plan of growing in that way?

  160. Do we labor over the scriptures in such a way that we can plainly see

  161. that today we understand something that we did not understand yesterday?

  162. Some of us work at reading books on the Christian life with a view of growing,

  163. but have no plan and no sustained effort to move steadily and constantly forward

  164. in our understanding of the Bible.

  165. Study the Bible so steadily and constantly and frequently

  166. that you can clearly perceive yourself to grow in them.

  167. Resolution 11 is one of the reasons why he made such amazing progress

  168. in his theological understanding.

  169. It says,

  170. Resolved.

  171. When I think of any theorem in divinity to be solved,

  172. immediately do what I can towards solving it,

  173. if circumstances do not hinder.

  174. What he's saying there is his resolution was not to be a passive reader.

  175. He read with a view to solving problems.

  176. Most of us in the modern world are cursed with a bent towards passive reading.

  177. We read, if we do, in the same way that we watch TV.

  178. We don't ask questions as we read.

  179. We don't ask,

  180. Why does that sentence follow that sentence?

  181. How does this paragraph relate to the one that was there three pages earlier?

  182. We don't ferret out the order of thought or ponder the meaning of terms.

  183. And if we see a problem,

  184. I think we habitually just leave them to the experts.

  185. Thirdly, Edwards exhorts us to redeem the time

  186. and to do what our hand finds to do with all of our might.

  187. His sixth resolution was pretty simple and powerful.

  188. Resolved to live with all my might while I do live.

  189. Resolution five was pretty similar.

  190. Resolved never to lose one moment of time,

  191. but to improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can.

  192. He was a great believer in doing what you could in the time that you have,

  193. rather than putting things off to a more convenient time.

  194. He was clearly a person who was disciplined in mind and body and spirit.

  195. He would spend up to 13 hours a day in his study.

  196. He rose early,

  197. even for non-electricity and alarm days.

  198. In fact,

  199. he was probably entirely serious.

  200. I read it as a joke,

  201. but he was probably entirely serious

  202. when he wrote in his diary in 1728,

  203. I think Christ has recommended rising early in the morning

  204. by his rising from the grave very early on the Sunday.

  205. I commend for your consideration

  206. whether such care to maximize time and effectiveness

  207. in devotion to the pursuit of God and his word

  208. is what the preacher meant

  209. when he says in Ecclesiastes 9 verse 10,

    Ecclesiastes 9:10

  210. whatever your hand finds to do,

  211. do it with all your might,

  212. for in the grave where you are going,

  213. there is neither working nor planning

  214. nor knowledge nor wisdom.

  215. Fourthly,

  216. the theological,

  217. the biblical labor of Edwards

  218. exhorts us to study

  219. for the sake of hearts of worship

  220. and for practical obedience.

  221. What you see in Jonathan Edwards

  222. is the sweet marriage of reason and affection,

  223. of thought and feeling,

  224. of head and heart,

  225. of study and worship

  226. that took place in the life of Edwards

  227. that I think is rare today.

  228. So the final exhortation from Edwards

  229. is to recover what the old-time Puritans

  230. used to call logic on fire

  231. or fire with joy and obedience.

  232. Edwards did not pursue a passion for God

  233. because it was an icing on the cake of his faith.

  234. He wanted to be smarter than everyone else

  235. in terms of the Bible.

  236. For him,

  237. faith was grounded in a sense of God

  238. which was more than what reason alone could deliver.

  239. In other words,

  240. it is to no avail whatsoever

  241. merely to believe that God is holy

  242. and that God is merciful.

  243. For that belief to be of any saving value at all,

  244. we must have true delight in it

  245. of what it is in and of itself.

  246. We must delight in that truth

  247. for it to have saving power.

  248. Otherwise,

  249. the knowledge of God

  250. is no different than what Satan has.

  251. Satan knows that he's merciful.

  252. Satan knows that he's all-powerful.

  253. But Satan does not delight

  254. in that knowledge of God.

  255. Does that mean that all of his study

  256. was in vain?

  257. Not at all.

  258. He said,

  259. the more you have

  260. of a rational knowledge

  261. of divine things,

  262. the more opportunity there will be

  263. when the Spirit

  264. shall be breathed into your heart

  265. to see the excellency of these things

  266. and to taste the sweetness of them.

  267. So the goal for Edwards

  268. was not just growing

  269. in knowing God,

  270. but growing in delighting in God,

  271. in savoring God,

  272. in relishing in Him.

  273. for all of his intellectual might

  274. and frankly,

  275. he was a very,

  276. he had a very powerful mind.

  277. But Edwards,

  278. for all of that,

  279. Edwards was the furthest thing

  280. from a cool,

  281. detached,

  282. neutral,

  283. disinterested academic.

  284. Disinterested academic.

  285. We often fall on one side or the other

  286. for the donkey on this.

  287. We're either the academics

  288. who are coolly detached

  289. or we're people so-called

  290. filled with the Spirit,

  291. alive in Jesus

  292. but don't know the Scriptures.

  293. Edwards rebukes both.

  294. He was as intent

  295. on cultivating

  296. his passion for God

  297. as he was cultivating

  298. his knowledge of God.

  299. He said,

  300. or he wrote,

  301. seek not to grow in knowledge

  302. chiefly for the sake of applause

  303. and to enable you

  304. to dispute with others

  305. but seek it for the benefit

  306. of your souls

  307. in order to practice

  308. according to what knowledge

  309. you have.

  310. This will be the way

  311. to know more.

  312. Edwards is remarkable in this.

  313. He said,

  314. the moment

  315. in your study

  316. of the Scriptures,

  317. the moment

  318. you don't put something

  319. into practice

  320. from your study

  321. is the moment

  322. you stop growing

  323. in knowledge.

  324. Knowledge is to be put

  325. into practice

  326. and the moment

  327. you don't put into practice

  328. is the moment

  329. you stop growing

  330. in knowledge.

  331. The greatest thing

  332. I think

  333. that we can learn

  334. from Edwards,

  335. I think,

  336. is that God

  337. is glorified

  338. not most

  339. by being known

  340. nor by being

  341. dutifully obeyed.

  342. He is glorified

  343. most

  344. by being

  345. enjoyed.

  346. If you've been around

  347. St. Paul's

  348. a while,

  349. you will

  350. potentially

  351. put together

  352. my love

  353. for Edwards.

  354. in our vision

  355. statement,

  356. treasuring

  357. Jesus

  358. together

  359. for the joy

  360. of all people.

  361. The joy,

  362. treasuring Jesus

  363. and joy

  364. go together.

  365. Edwards wrote this,

  366. God is glorified

  367. not only

  368. by his glory

  369. being seen

  370. but by

  371. being rejoiced

  372. in.

  373. when those

  374. who see it

  375. delight in it

  376. God is

  377. more glorified

  378. than if

  379. they only

  380. see it.

  381. In other words,

  382. the disciplined

  383. life,

  384. the goal

  385. of a disciplined

  386. life

  387. is the joyful

  388. worship of God

  389. and the

  390. undisciplined

  391. life

  392. robs us

  393. of delighting

  394. God,

  395. our greatest

  396. joy.

  397. So that

  398. brings me

  399. to my

  400. third point

  401. that is

  402. and I'll

  403. briefly run

  404. through this

  405. stuff,

  406. plan your

  407. run.

  408. The essence

  409. of the

  410. challenge

  411. for us

  412. as we

  413. step into

  414. a new

  415. year

  416. is to

  417. plan your

  418. run

  419. with

  420. Jesus.

  421. News

  422. of a

  423. terminal

  424. illness,

  425. attending

  426. a funeral,

  427. they are

  428. often times

  429. when we

  430. focus on

  431. what really

  432. matters in

  433. life.

  434. The sharp

  435. realities of

  436. life come

  437. to bear

  438. on us in

  439. that moment.

  440. And I

  441. think the

  442. beginning of

  443. a new

  444. year may

  445. be a

  446. distant

  447. but a

  448. relatively

  449. close

  450. third as

  451. well.

  452. We must

  453. labour to

  454. ensure that

  455. the most

  456. important things

  457. stay the

  458. most important

  459. things in

  460. life.

  461. So be

  462. inspired by

  463. in

  464. Edwards.

  465. Get

  466. some

  467. plan in

  468. place to

  469. grow in

  470. the

  471. important.

  472. Don't

  473. coast,

  474. don't

  475. meander,

  476. redeem the

  477. time.

  478. That's the

  479. challenge from

  480. Hebrews and

  481. Edwards.

  482. For the

  483. past year,

  484. we have been

  485. constantly saying

  486. here at

  487. St. Paul's

  488. encouraging you

  489. to take

  490. your next

  491. step.

  492. We have

  493. the good

  494. news of

  495. the gospel.

  496. It's written

  497. out there on

  498. the board

  499. straight behind

  500. me here.

  501. We have

  502. the good

  503. news of

  504. the gospel

  505. and on

  506. the other

  507. board we

  508. have what

  509. the gospel

  510. gives us.

  511. Embrace the

  512. good news of

  513. Jesus Christ

  514. and you end

  515. up with a

  516. life of

  517. satisfaction and

  518. meaning and

  519. hope and in

  520. other words,

  521. joy.

  522. They are the

  523. consequences of

  524. trusting in

  525. Jesus.

  526. So how do

  527. we pursue,

  528. pursue,

  529. pursue the

  530. gospel in

  531. our life in

  532. order that

  533. those consequences

  534. might grow

  535. more and more

  536. and more in

  537. our hearts

  538. and our

  539. minds.

  540. We're going

  541. to be talking

  542. more about

  543. that in our

  544. vision series

  545. in a few

  546. weeks.

  547. But to get

  548. Hebrews and

  549. to put Edwards

  550. together, I

  551. just want to

  552. say one

  553. thing about

  554. planning your

  555. joy.

  556. Pursue

  557. godly habits

  558. in life.

  559. Pursue

  560. spiritual

  561. disciplines,

  562. spiritual

  563. practice,

  564. diligently

  565. pursue them,

  566. train in

  567. those things,

  568. sweat in

  569. those things.

  570. we're going

  571. to emphasize

  572. seven things

  573. as we move

  574. forward.

  575. Weekly

  576. worship,

  577. daily

  578. devotions,

  579. Christian

  580. community,

  581. use of

  582. our talents,

  583. the service

  584. of others,

  585. generous

  586. giving,

  587. witness of

  588. the gospel,

  589. and rest.

  590. Rest.

  591. something that

  592. we do not

  593. know how to

  594. do in our

  595. modern world.

  596. Now I'm not

  597. expecting any

  598. of us to

  599. be the next

  600. Edwards,

  601. the next

  602. Jonathan

  603. Edwards,

  604. or to take

  605. on all of

  606. his disciplines.

  607. He was a

  608. remarkable man

  609. who I think

  610. we should

  611. just frankly

  612. admire.

  613. But I do

  614. want you to

  615. take your

  616. next step.

  617. I do want

  618. to exhort

  619. you to a

  620. discipline

  621. life.

  622. Because life

  623. and faith

  624. is a race

  625. and therefore

  626. all of us

  627. have at least

  628. one next

  629. step to

  630. take.

  631. At least

  632. one next

  633. step to

  634. take.

  635. Lastly,

  636. how to

  637. run.

  638. As a,

  639. someone who's

  640. done a bit

  641. of running

  642. over the

  643. years,

  644. more recently,

  645. and

  646. trained for

  647. a marathon,

  648. marathon,

  649. I had to

  650. Google

  651. how to

  652. run a

  653. marathon.

  654. How to

  655. actually run

  656. a marathon

  657. and get

  658. advice from

  659. a bunch of

  660. people,

  661. how to

  662. train for

  663. a marathon,

  664. all that

  665. sort of

  666. thing.

  667. So how do

  668. you run

  669. the race

  670. of faith?

  671. life?

  672. life.

  673. life.

  674. So this is my

  675. last point,

  676. but let me

  677. just say,

  678. very significant

  679. point.

  680. How to run

  681. the race of

  682. life and

  683. faith.

  684. This is the

  685. crucial

  686. dynamic.

  687. It is,

  688. if you like,

  689. the petrol in

  690. your engine.

  691. Reading for the

  692. beginning of

  693. Edwards'

  694. resolutions,

  695. and it sets

  696. the tone for

  697. the entire

  698. 70 of the

  699. resolutions,

  700. Edwards wrote

  701. this right at

  702. the beginning,

  703. being sensible

  704. that I am

  705. unable to do

  706. anything without

  707. God's help,

  708. I do humbly

  709. entreat him by

  710. his grace to

  711. enable me to

  712. keep these

  713. resolutions so

  714. far as they

  715. are agreeable to

  716. his will for

  717. Christ's sake.

  718. Hebrews 10

  719. puts Edwards'

  720. introduction in

  721. these, sorry,

  722. Hebrews 11 puts

  723. it in these

  724. words.

  725. Fix your eyes

  726. on Jesus,

  727. the pioneer

  728. and the

  729. perfecter of

  730. your faith.

  731. You might say

  732. the pioneer

  733. and the

  734. perfecter of

  735. your race.

  736. Jesus is

  737. not simply

  738. the pattern

  739. of life and

  740. faith, he

  741. is the

  742. completer of

  743. it as well.

  744. He is the

  745. only one who

  746. has perfectly

  747. lived it and

  748. he did it for

  749. us.

  750. So I'm not

  751. just exhorting

  752. you to a

  753. life of

  754. discipline.

  755. I'm exhorting

  756. you to a

  757. life of

  758. discipline that's

  759. focused on

  760. Jesus who

  761. has run the

  762. race before

  763. you and

  764. completed your

  765. race for

  766. you.

  767. There is a

  768. great gulf

  769. between the

  770. understanding that

  771. God accepts us

  772. because of our

  773. efforts and the

  774. understanding that

  775. God accepts us

  776. because of what

  777. Jesus has done

  778. for us.

  779. religion operates

  780. on the principle

  781. that I obey

  782. and therefore I

  783. am acceptable to

  784. God.

  785. The operating

  786. of the Christian

  787. faith, the

  788. operating principle

  789. of the Christian

  790. faith is I'm

  791. accepted by God

  792. through what

  793. Jesus Christ has

  794. already achieved

  795. for me and

  796. therefore I

  797. obey.

  798. Therefore I

  799. pursue.

  800. Therefore I run

  801. the race.

  802. Two people

  803. living by those

  804. two very

  805. different principles

  806. may in fact

  807. look the

  808. same.

  809. They may

  810. even be sitting

  811. beside you in

  812. church now.

  813. They both

  814. pray.

  815. They both

  816. give generously.

  817. They're both

  818. loyal and

  819. faithful to

  820. family and

  821. the church and

  822. they're good

  823. citizens but

  824. they live it

  825. out with

  826. radically

  827. different

  828. motives.

  829. Religion

  830. tries to

  831. live out

  832. divine

  833. standards out

  834. of fear.

  835. If we

  836. don't live a

  837. disciplined

  838. life then we

  839. fear we'll miss

  840. out on God's

  841. blessing now in

  842. this life and

  843. in the next

  844. life to come

  845. every time

  846. something bad

  847. happens in

  848. life.

  849. And you

  850. go,

  851. hang on a

  852. bit,

  853. what?

  854. Oh,

  855. I haven't

  856. been reading

  857. my Bible,

  858. I should

  859. have gone

  860. to church

  861. and give

  862. a little

  863. bit more

  864. money.

  865. That's a

  866. life of

  867. fear.

  868. Gospel

  869. motivation is

  870. gratitude for

  871. the blessing

  872. we have

  873. already received

  874. because of

  875. Jesus.

  876. That's why

  877. the writer

  878. to the

  879. Hebrews

  880. spends 10

  881. chapters

  882. exhorting the

  883. Hebrews about

  884. the supremacy

  885. and the

  886. magnificence of

  887. Jesus Christ

  888. before he

  889. says run.

  890. Run.

  891. Gospel

  892. motivation is

  893. gratitude for

  894. the blessing

  895. we have

  896. already received

  897. in Jesus

  898. Christ.

  899. While the

  900. religious person

  901. is forced

  902. into obedience,

  903. the Christian

  904. rushes into

  905. it in a

  906. desire to

  907. please and

  908. to resemble

  909. the one who

  910. endured the

  911. cross for

  912. them, for

  913. their joy

  914. and for

  915. his.

  916. And so my

  917. exhortation for

  918. you this

  919. morning,

  920. today,

  921. beginning of

  922. 2024, is

  923. rush,

  924. rush,

  925. rush into

  926. obedience

  927. with joy.

  928. Look to

  929. Jesus and

  930. the gospel,

  931. plan your

  932. run with

  933. him and

  934. take your

  935. next step

  936. of faith

  937. in 2024.
