  1. If you can be a sibling of someone famous, who will it be?

  2. And how will you live differently?

  3. If you're a sport fan, maybe you want to be one of Williams or Watts,

  4. or if you enjoy movie and entertainment, how about being one of the Hemsworths,

  5. or the White Brothers of Aviation or the Kennedys in American politics.

  6. Let's play a guessing game, okay, to see whether you can recognize those siblings of the foreign peoples.

  7. The hints are their siblings is in entertainment industry.

  8. They go, Kimon, very obvious.

  9. Got resemblance, this is issues.

  10. This is harder.

  11. Steve might know this one.

  12. We all know this.

  13. The next one should be easy for all the Yanwans.

  14. Yeah.

  15. Very well.

  16. Great job in working out who these people are.

  17. But do you remember my original questions?

  18. There are two questions.

  19. The first is, whose sibling do you want to become?

  20. And what about the second questions?

  21. Wendy, can you hold back a bit on that one?

  22. Yes.

  23. I think the second question is comparatively a bit more important.

  24. And I won't ask for a show of hands, but I'm confident around half of us,

  25. so many of us will forgot that question, is how will you live differently?

  26. Which is about what changes people will see in your life to show that you are a member of a particular family.

  27. I'm confident, for I know that I myself often miss important parts of a conversation

  28. because I'm very frustrated on some earlier parts or become very quick to react.

  29. One of the writers in the New Testament, James, teach us from his book in chapter 1, verse 19 to 20,

  30. that my dear brothers and sisters, take note of this.

  31. Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry

  32. because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

  33. Learning to hold back our reaction, being quick to listen and slow to speak,

  34. and or slow to become angry is such a lifelong lesson.

  35. It's much easier to stay angry and demand justice, an eye for an eye.

  36. But take note of James' warning that human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires,

  37. which is end up causing you to become ungodly.

  38. Ash preached last week about how the gospel,

  39. the good news of God's action to save people through Jesus,

  40. bring everyone into a family.

  41. Talking about family and sibling,

  42. we read today that James also has a brother who wrote a letter in the New Testament.

  43. His name is Jew.

  44. Jew, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James,

  45. he wrote a letter to those who have been called,

  46. who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ,

  47. to encourage them to content for the faith,

  48. deliver once and for all to the saints.

  49. My intention today is to explore three questions from Jew's letter.

  50. Who is Jew?

  51. Who are the ungodly?

  52. And how do we stay faithful to the gospel?

  53. We know from what we have read that Jew is James' brother.

  54. The beginning of the letter can also be translated as,

  55. I, Judas, am a slave to Jesus Christ and brother to James,

  56. writing to those loved by God the Father,

  57. called and kept safe by Jesus Christ.

  58. We can make three observations of this different translation.

  59. Firstly, Jew and Judas are interchangeable names.

  60. Matthew 13, verse 54 to 55 says,

    Matthew 13:54–55

  61. So, apart from being the brother of James,

  62. Jude or Judas is also a brother of Jesus Christ.

  63. Chapter 3 of Mark's gospel says,

  64. Jesus' family went to take charge of him

  65. because they thought he has gone out of his mind

  66. for being so busy dealing with people and even skipping meals.

  67. But Acts 1, 14 indicates that Jesus' brother later become his follower.

  68. And Paul, right in 1 Corinthians 9, verse 5,

    1 Corinthians 9:5

  69. implied that Jesus' brother become traveling missionary later in their life.

  70. James and Jude's writings provide so much for us

  71. to learn about how to live as a follower of Christ.

  72. I urge you to set your goal this year to read their writing

  73. and be familiar with their teaching.

  74. The second observation is about the term a slave to Jesus Christ,

  75. which is the first lesson we can learn from Jude.

  76. Jude did not claim his status as a brother of Jesus Christ,

  77. but addressed himself as a slave to Jesus Christ

  78. because he was fully committed to glorifying Jesus.

  79. He does not want anything to distract his audience.

  80. Being a slave is a much stronger term than being a servant.

  81. Jude's self-destination describes his complete devotion to Jesus.

  82. Jude is an ordinary person who became special

  83. through his association with Jesus.

  84. And the association is not through being his sibling,

  85. but through his submission to Jesus as a slave to his master.

  86. Jude is a person who knows his standing with God.

  87. His identity comes from his heart to serve and glorify God.

  88. It does not come from his status

  89. or standing among the believing community

  90. or his position in the church.

  91. He wants the best for his audience

  92. because he's writing to those loved by God,

  93. which is my third observation.

  94. The love that Jude referred to

  95. is a completed action

  96. that continues in the same state.

  97. God continues to love the people Jude is writing to

  98. because they are called and kept safe by Jesus.

  99. Jesus is the ultimate carekeeper

  100. of all those who follow him.

  101. Jesus is the only person

  102. who ensures his followers' abundance

  103. in mercy, peace, and love.

  104. And Jude is very confident

  105. that Jesus continues to keep his followers safe.

  106. Jude loved the followers of Jesus

  107. as much as Jesus loved them.

  108. And in his letter,

  109. he provides bookends of encouragement and praises

  110. for the faithful followers.

  111. His letter may seem heavy and sober in the middle,

  112. but we must remember that Jude writes it

  113. out of love and encouragement.

  114. The faith that was once for all

  115. and trusted to God's holy people

  116. frames the whole body of the letter.

  117. Jude writes to remind

  118. and to urge his readers to remember that faith.

  119. It was once and for all

  120. and trusted to them who are God's holy people.

  121. It will not change, diminish, or be taken away.

  122. Faithful followers knew how to behave

  123. and only needed to be reminded

  124. of what they had already learned and demonstrated.

  125. Nick reminded us in his preaching a couple of weeks ago

  126. from Ephesians that Jesus' followers

  127. are God's holy people

  128. who have a glorious inheritance waiting for them.

  129. There is such a true hope

  130. and an incomparable great power

  131. for those who believe.

  132. Jesus' believers and followers

  133. are special because Jesus calls and keeps us.

  134. Jude told us that he originally intended to write

  135. about their common salvation in Jesus Christ,

  136. but had to change subject

  137. to provide with tools to defend their faith.

  138. His strong warning is necessary

  139. because there are ungodly people among his readers.

  140. Dear friends,

  141. although I was very eager to write to you

  142. about the salvation we share,

  143. I felt compelled to write and urge you

  144. to contend for the faith that was run for all

  145. and trusted to God's holy people.

  146. For certain individuals

  147. whose condemnation was written about long ago

  148. have secretly slipped among you.

  149. They are ungodly people

  150. who have preferred the grace of our God

  151. into a license of immorality

  152. and denied Jesus Christ our only Savior and Lord.

  153. Jude told us that the ungodly people

  154. are those who preferred the grace of our God

  155. into a license of immorality

  156. and denied Jesus Christ our only Savior and Lord.

  157. The critical word here is only.

  158. Jesus is our only Savior.

  159. Ungodly people have an incorrect understanding

  160. of what it takes to be saved

  161. and live in a moral life,

  162. which if followed will be detrimental.

  163. There's nothing and no one else can save us

  164. or keep us safe except Jesus.

  165. False teacher create problems,

  166. abuse the support of the Holy Ghost church,

  167. and claim to have particular inspiration

  168. from the Holy Spirit.

  169. They will claim to know better

  170. than your leaders in how to do things.

  171. At the beginning of our summer series a few weeks ago,

  172. Steve preached about Jonathan Edwards

  173. and how he should be added

  174. to the list of faithful people

  175. mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  176. You can revisit all those sermons

  177. by Steve, Ash, and Nick on our website

  178. or visit our YouTube live stream.

  179. The Bible has many positive examples

  180. of how God encourages a follower

  181. to stay faithful to him.

  182. And they are also examples of those

  183. who suffer the punishment

  184. of their rebellion towards God.

  185. And Jude uses many negative examples

  186. from the Old Testament,

  187. from verse 5 to 19.

  188. Hebrews 11 and Jude provides

  189. a positive and negative examples

  190. of faithful interaction with God.

  191. If you're not familiar with them,

  192. you should make it your goal

  193. to read through them

  194. so that you will not fall

  195. into the same punishment

  196. as those who rebel against God.

  197. I have compiled this leaflet

  198. of how Jude used the Old Testament.

  199. So take a copy as you leave

  200. and familiarize yourself

  201. with the negative example

  202. so that you can take

  203. Jude's warning to heart.

  204. But Jude compiles a summary

  205. that the ungodly people are

  206. those who do not believe.

  207. They abandoned their proper dwelling

  208. and gave themselves up

  209. to sexual immorality and perversion.

  210. They polluted their bodies,

  211. rejected authority,

  212. and hid abuse on celestial things.

  213. He further explained that

  214. these people slander

  215. whatever they do not understand.

  216. Jude go on to say,

  217. these people are blamishers

  218. at your love feast,

  219. eating with you

  220. with their slightest crime,

  221. and shepherds who feed only themselves.

  222. The ungodly people

  223. present a worrying problem

  224. not because they actively

  225. oppose the church.

  226. They are a problem

  227. because they have secretly

  228. slipped in among the believers

  229. and infiltrate the community.

  230. They appear to have

  231. your interest in their mind.

  232. They enjoy the fellowship

  233. and may even hold

  234. leadership positions

  235. shepherding others.

  236. But all their care and concern

  237. are themselves.

  238. Jude described the ungodly people

  239. as cloud without rain,

  240. blow along by the wind,

  241. autumn trees without fruits

  242. and uprooted tristead.

  243. They are wild waves of the sea

  244. forming up their shame,

  245. wandering stars

  246. from whom

  247. blackness

  248. has been reserved forever.

  249. They are like clouds

  250. that overshadow others

  251. but never bring the rain

  252. that will nourish

  253. and produce growth.

  254. They like to keep you

  255. under their control.

  256. They are fruitless trees

  257. and spiritually dead.

  258. Their fires

  259. often seem possible

  260. but will not help you

  261. to grow closer

  262. to God or his people.

  263. They do not hold back

  264. from telling others

  265. about their experience

  266. or achievements.

  267. They appear

  268. to be committed

  269. to God or the church.

  270. Stars

  271. serve a great purpose

  272. of giving travel

  273. a direction at night,

  274. pointing the lost

  275. to a safe place.

  276. As followers of Christ,

  277. we are to point people

  278. to Jesus

  279. for salvation.

  280. But the ungodly people

  281. are wandering stars

  282. who lead people

  283. away from God.

  284. And if people rely

  285. on their advice

  286. or follow them,

  287. they will not grow

  288. in their faith

  289. as God's intended.

  290. So Jude continues

  291. saying,

  292. these people

  293. are grumbler,

  294. fault-finder.

  295. They follow

  296. their own evil desires.

  297. They boast about

  298. themselves

  299. and flatter others

  300. for their own advantage.

  301. They grumble,

  302. they find faults

  303. in others,

  304. especially those

  305. leading them.

  306. The ungodly people

  307. often complain

  308. behind their leader's back

  309. and use flattery

  310. to manipulate

  311. and gain an advantage

  312. in getting what they want.

  313. They are scoffers

  314. who follow

  315. their own ungodly desires.

  316. People will divide

  317. the community

  318. by following

  319. merely human instincts

  320. and do not have the spirit

  321. because they care

  322. most about

  323. getting what they want,

  324. even if it means

  325. stepping on others

  326. to get it.

  327. They are sometimes

  328. very subtle

  329. but other times

  330. apparent

  331. in how they gain

  332. their influence

  333. over other believers.

  334. We live in a society

  335. that demands

  336. the church

  337. to change

  338. with the times

  339. to take advantage

  340. of most modern view

  341. of what it means

  342. to be a Christian.

  343. And the demands

  344. are even coming

  345. from within

  346. the community

  347. of believers

  348. who to redefine

  349. the basic meanings

  350. of even being

  351. human

  352. in terms of

  353. gender

  354. and marriage.

  355. We're in our

  356. current day and age

  357. where personal

  358. and individual freedom

  359. has been elevated

  360. so high

  361. as a failure of life,

  362. where self-indulgence

  363. and self-persevation

  364. is of high priority

  365. of a lot of people,

  366. especially Yarn Edo's.

  367. The warning of Jews

  368. against ungodliness

  369. is very relevant

  370. to Jesus' followers.

  371. So how are we

  372. going to content

  373. for the faith

  374. that was once for all

  375. and trusted

  376. to God's holy people?

  377. How are we going

  378. to stay faithful

  379. to the gospel?

  380. Before we think

  381. about what we need

  382. to do,

  383. I must reassure you

  384. again that

  385. God is the one

  386. who keeps us

  387. from stumbling.

  388. We are loved by God

  389. and called

  390. and kept saved

  391. by Jesus.

  392. God will present

  393. his people

  394. to himself

  395. as perfect reflection

  396. of his son Jesus

  397. to display his glory

  398. and share his eternal joy

  399. with his people.

  400. But you,

  401. dear friends,

  402. by building yourself up

  403. in your most holy faith

  404. and praying

  405. in the Holy Spirit,

  406. keep yourself

  407. in God's love

  408. as you wait

  409. for the mercy

  410. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  411. to bring you

  412. to eternal life.

  413. Jew gives us

  414. three specific instructions

  415. to how to stay faithful

  416. to the gospel,

  417. content for our faith,

  418. fight and struggle,

  419. exert intense effort

  420. like an athlete

  421. or one in warfare.

  422. But he again

  423. assures us

  424. in verse 24

  425. that God,

  426. the glorious,

  427. majestic,

  428. powerful,

  429. authoritative,

  430. only God,

  431. our Savior,

  432. is at work,

  433. who is able

  434. to keep you

  435. from stumbling

  436. and to present you

  437. before his glorious presence

  438. with a thought

  439. and with great joy.

  440. God's hope

  441. and power

  442. are sufficient

  443. to sustain us

  444. in the face

  445. of what God brings

  446. into our life.

  447. Even a few ungodly people

  448. or situations,

  449. God is the one

  450. who will work in you

  451. as you joy

  452. lean to him.

  453. Interacting

  454. with people

  455. who doubt

  456. and wonder

  457. requires deep knowledge

  458. of our weaknesses

  459. and failure.

  460. It requires maturity

  461. of faith.

  462. That is why

  463. Jude's first

  464. specific instruction

  465. is to build

  466. ourselves up

  467. in faith.

  468. Romans 10, 17

  469. says,

  470. faith comes from

  471. hearing the message

  472. and the message

  473. is heard

  474. through the word

  475. about Christ.

  476. Because we are prone

  477. to forget

  478. what God has done

  479. for us,

  480. we must constantly

  481. expose ourselves

  482. to God's word,

  483. which is where

  484. faith comes from.

  485. Regularly reading

  486. the Bible,

  487. hearing preached

  488. and taught,

  489. memorizing scriptures

  490. and discusses

  491. with others

  492. are ways

  493. we build

  494. ourselves up

  495. in faith.

  496. God has given us

  497. patterns in the scripture

  498. as a warning.

  499. As we see

  500. the numerous examples

  501. of those who

  502. turn away from the Lord

  503. to fold their sinful ways,

  504. we should pray

  505. and ask God

  506. to show us

  507. an area of our life

  508. where evil desire

  509. may lurk.

  510. And that's the second

  511. specific instruction.

  512. We pray for the Holy Spirit

  513. to work in our life.

  514. And by building

  515. ourselves up

  516. this way

  517. and praying

  518. in the Holy Spirit,

  519. we keep ourselves

  520. in God's love

  521. as we await

  522. his mercy

  523. on the last day.

  524. That's the third

  525. instruction.

  526. The way

  527. we can keep ourselves

  528. in God's love,

  529. apart from reading

  530. the Bible

  531. and praying,

  532. is to be merciful

  533. to those who doubt.

  534. Save others

  535. by snatching them

  536. from the fire.

  537. To others show mercy,

  538. mixed with fear,

  539. hating even the clothing

  540. stink

  541. by corrupt flesh.

  542. As believers,

  543. our hope is set

  544. on Christ's mercy

  545. towards us.

  546. So we are to show mercy

  547. to those

  548. caught in sin

  549. and deception

  550. while keeping ourselves

  551. from that sin

  552. that has trapped them.

  553. all of this

  554. require

  555. intentional effort

  556. and active

  557. participation

  558. in the body

  559. of Christ.

  560. We are vulnerable

  561. in mistaking

  562. our desires

  563. for God's will.

  564. The false teaching

  565. of those ungodly

  566. people may seem

  567. good and reasonable

  568. at first.

  569. And a false teacher

  570. may appear authentic.

  571. It ends up

  572. pointing away

  573. from God

  574. and towards destruction.

  575. To avoid

  576. being led astray,

  577. we must rely

  578. on the scriptures,

  579. on the spirit's guidance

  580. and invite other believers

  581. to help

  582. hold us accountable.

  583. We should take advantage

  584. of these safeguards,

  585. stay on the gospel path

  586. and assist those

  587. who are wavering.

  588. A sure sign

  589. of ungodly people

  590. is that they like

  591. to fight

  592. with others,

  593. especially their leaders.

  594. So let me introduce you

  595. to this book

  596. called Fight for

  597. Your Pastor.

  598. A pastor

  599. is someone

  600. that's leading your life.

  601. Again,

  602. this will help you

  603. to come back

  604. ungodliness.

  605. I bought this book

  606. last year

  607. and gave out copies

  608. to the church.

  609. So please

  610. dust them

  611. off your shelf.

  612. We'll read them

  613. again this year.

  614. And if you haven't
