  1. Well, good morning, everyone, and welcome to our Vision Series for 2024.

  2. I'd be grateful if you had your Bibles open, but also the St Paul's app, which has an outline

  3. for today's message.

  4. In the latter half of 2009, I received a letter from RMS, New South Wales Roads, requesting

  5. that I front up to a vehicle inspection station with the vehicle that I'd purchased about

  6. 18 months earlier.

  7. The letter stated that there was, for RMS, some concern that my vehicle wasn't adequately

  8. repaired from a major accident that it had had earlier, something that I was unaware

  9. of at the time.

  10. I wasn't concerned because it was a great vehicle, no issues at all, drove really,

  11. really well.

  12. I arrived at the inspection station, handed over the vehicle, the keys, confident of where

  13. I stood.

  14. After about 45 minutes of sitting there twiddling my thumbs, two inspectors came in, sat either

  15. side of me, and gave me the classic good news, bad news report.

  16. Well, the good news is your vehicle is in fantastic order and certainly roadworthy.

  17. The bad news is that this is not your vehicle.

  18. This is what is known as a rebirthed vehicle.

  19. They explained that the rebirthed vehicle is a stolen vehicle.

  20. Someone purchases what is called a repairable write-off, most likely from interstate, and instead of

  21. going through the costs of repairing the repairable write-off, they steal a vehicle that is exactly the

  22. same and transfer the numbers from the repairable write-off to the stolen vehicle, and then sell it

  23. as a repaired vehicle.

  24. That way they don't go through the costly process of repairing it.

  25. It looks good.

  26. In fact, it looks exactly the same as what the original vehicle did on the outside before the accident,

  27. but all the identifying markers of the original vehicle are gone, and the stolen vehicle

  28. are attached to it.

  29. And then, of course, the original vehicle that they purchased interstate is chopped up and discarded

  30. or thrown in the bottom of the Parramatta River.

  31. I was then told by the inspectors to sit tight as major crimes were on their way.

  32. And four officers turned up, and within two hours, my vehicle, I watched it being loaded on the

  33. back of a police truck, and with it, $25,000 gone.

  34. They said, the vehicle that you have insured is most likely in the bottom of the Parramatta

  35. River right now.

  36. That's the good news, because if you had an accident with this vehicle, you weren't insured

  37. for it.

  38. All this happened.

  39. The good news is that as a result of my case and the evidence that I gave, you can now buy

  40. a second-hand vehicle with confidence.

  41. There is now a national register that identifies the entire history of every vehicle.

  42. You're welcome.

  43. This all happened on the day before our second child was born.

  44. One day, I'm dealing with rebirthing, and the next day, I'm dealing with an actual birth.

  45. And when she was born, the first time I looked at her, I went, oh yeah, she's ours.

  46. Immediately identifiable as ours, belonging to us.

  47. At birth, we are all identified genetically as we share the genetic makeup of our biological

  48. parents.

  49. We also inherit an ethnic makeup, depending on where you're born.

  50. You're also likely to have a national identity.

  51. And certainly for many years, as you were growing up, you share the socioeconomic identity

  52. of your parents.

  53. That is, our birth identifies us in every possible way.

  54. And as we just read, Nick read out to us, Peter describes becoming a Christian as being

  55. reborn, a new birth.

  56. This new birth doesn't change who we are ethnically, nationally, genetically, socioeconomically, but

  57. it does change our lives in such a way that we are fundamentally different people.

  58. Fundamentally different people.

  59. You may not look different on the outside, but you are fundamentally different on the inside.

  60. Totally different on the inside.

  61. And that's what this vision series is all about.

  62. Over the course of this term, we are building up towards Easter and the celebration of the

  63. death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ for the salvation of humanity.

  64. And as we build up to Easter, I've kind of reversed everything.

  65. I can't kind of change the date for Easter.

  66. As we build up to Easter, we're going to be looking at the resurrection.

  67. And specifically, the resurrection impact on our lives now.

  68. What it does for us.

  69. And we're going to be going through sections of 1 and 2 Peter as we do that.

  70. And for the first four weeks, I'm focusing on the first 16 verses of 1 Peter.

  71. So you're going to see that Bible reading again and again and again.

  72. Again, if you get your Bibles open and have it there with you, that'd be fantastic.

  73. Today, I want to lay the foundation of the new birth.

  74. What is the new birth?

  75. What does it do?

  76. How does it grow in us?

  77. And who makes the new birth possible?

  78. That's kind of the three points for today.

  79. So what's the new birth?

  80. Verse 3, just read out to us.

  81. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  82. In his great mercy, he has given us new birth.

  83. All Christians, that is, everyone who trusts in Jesus Christ, are described as being reborn.

  84. It's a new birth.

  85. That is, every Christian is born again.

  86. That term is not just for a certain kind of Christian.

  87. You know, there's Christians and then there's born again Christians.

  88. That's not biblical in any way whatsoever.

  89. All Christians are born again.

  90. And we're not told much here about what the new birth is that the Christian has received.

  91. We know from other parts of the Bible that the new birth is a new life and a new vitality.

  92. New life and a new vitality.

  93. When a person is born again, they experience new life.

  94. That is, we are told in Ephesians that we are spiritually dead.

  95. And being born again, spiritual life comes into you.

  96. God puts his very life into us.

  97. His eternal life into us.

  98. And the new birth comes to us in different kinds of ways.

  99. That is, there's no one type of experience that everyone must have.

  100. For some, their experience of new birth is like lightning bolt.

  101. And you can identify, which someone like I can identify,

  102. on the day, 30th of May, 1993, when the lightning bolt struck.

  103. For some, it's a gradual process where it's hardly even recognisable.

  104. So it's important not to insist that it happens in a certain way.

  105. Even though the new birth comes to us in different ways,

  106. and at times this new birth might be subtle,

  107. it is nevertheless astounding and powerful.

  108. The New Testament, the original New Testament word for it,

  109. is palagenesia.

  110. Palagenesia.

  111. It means regeneration.

  112. The book of Titus tells us that when we are born again,

  113. we experience regeneration.

  114. And Titus uses the word palagenesia.

  115. In Matthew 19, verse 28, Jesus says this,

    Matthew 19:28

  116. Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things,

  117. when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne,

  118. what Jesus is talking about there in Matthew 19,

  119. is the end of all things.

  120. When he rules the universe,

  121. God's power will come into the world

  122. and renew the entire world.

  123. He'll make it all right.

  124. Everything that's wrong, everything that's stained,

  125. everything that's evil, everything that's deformed,

  126. broken about this world will be fixed in that moment,

  127. in a twinkling of an eye by Jesus Christ

  128. at his second coming.

  129. Death and evil and suffering will be gone.

  130. All tears, sadness, anxiety will be wiped away.

  131. And despite all the superpowers and the wealth

  132. and the technology of the world,

  133. we cannot fix it.

  134. So think of what is required

  135. to bring about that kind of renewal

  136. in our world.

  137. And Jesus describes that time

  138. as the renewal of all things

  139. and he uses the Greek word,

  140. palogenesia,

  141. in Matthew 19.

  142. So the Apostle Paul here,

  143. sorry, the Apostle Peter here,

  144. in 1 Timothy,

  145. sorry, the Apostle Paul,

  146. has the audacity to use the exact same Christian word

  147. to describe the new birth

  148. of the Christian in Titus.

  149. Palogenesia.

  150. The renewal of all things.

  151. The tremendous power

  152. that renews all things at the end

  153. comes into the life of the Christian now

  154. in order to effect rebirth

  155. through faith in Jesus Christ.

  156. Can I just say,

  157. therefore,

  158. if you are a Christian,

  159. you, like me,

  160. are putting up with a whole heap of stuff

  161. in our lives that we don't have to.

  162. The potential for change

  163. in our lives is astounding.

  164. Incomprehensibly astounding

  165. because that power

  166. is present right now.

  167. This is the new life we get

  168. with the new birth.

  169. So particularly,

  170. where does this new birth operate

  171. in the life of the Christian?

  172. What does it do?

  173. The new birth

  174. operates

  175. especially in the hopes

  176. of the Christian,

  177. which is what we read there

  178. in 1 Peter 3.

  179. The new birth,

  180. the reason the new birth

  181. changes our,

  182. changes the Christian so much

  183. is because it changes

  184. our hopes so much.

  185. If you change a person's hopes,

  186. you change everything about them.

  187. Back in verse 3 again,

  188. Praise be the God and Father

  189. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  190. In his great mercy,

  191. he has given us new birth

  192. into a living hope

  193. through the resurrection

  194. of Jesus Christ from the dead

  195. and into an inheritance

  196. that can never perish,

  197. spoil,

  198. or fade.

  199. This inheritance is kept

  200. in heaven for you.

  201. The direction

  202. of every person's life

  203. is set

  204. on what they hope

  205. the most.

  206. So if you offer

  207. a person

  208. a life-giving,

  209. imperishable hope,

  210. then their life

  211. is changed forever.

  212. All of us,

  213. every human being,

  214. has certain desires

  215. and expectations.

  216. And there are desires

  217. like meaning,

  218. significance,

  219. security,

  220. purpose,

  221. and then you work out

  222. what you think

  223. will fulfill

  224. those desires.

  225. And whatever we believe in

  226. to fulfill those desires

  227. is what we set

  228. our hopes

  229. and our hearts on.

  230. Which is another way

  231. of saying,

  232. we are all hope-driven

  233. people.

  234. And our hearts,

  235. in order to

  236. fulfill our hopes,

  237. might be set

  238. on our careers,

  239. might be set

  240. on money,

  241. might be set

  242. on accomplishments,

  243. it might be set

  244. on status,

  245. it might be set

  246. on love,

  247. romance,

  248. beauty,

  249. our children,

  250. might be a political

  251. hope,

  252. might be social

  253. causes.

  254. every single person

  255. chooses something

  256. to believe in

  257. that will fill

  258. their hopes.

  259. We are

  260. unavoidably

  261. hope-based

  262. creatures.

  263. Proverbs 13,

  264. 12,

  265. in the Old Testament

  266. tells us

  267. that hope deferred

  268. makes the heart

  269. sick.

  270. we experience

  271. our present

  272. in radically

  273. different ways

  274. depending on

  275. what our future

  276. hope actually

  277. is.

  278. Imagine

  279. I have

  280. two people

  281. and I

  282. give them

  283. the exact

  284. same

  285. pair of

  286. scissors

  287. and I

  288. say,

  289. I want you

  290. to cut

  291. the church

  292. grass

  293. with these

  294. scissors.

  295. Pull one

  296. of them

  297. aside.

  298. Their

  299. experience

  300. of that,

  301. I mean I

  302. heard the

  303. groans already,

  304. you know like,

  305. their experience

  306. of that

  307. cutting the

  308. grass with a

  309. pair of

  310. scissors

  311. will be

  312. quite

  313. different

  314. based on

  315. the conversation

  316. I have with

  317. each of them

  318. privately.

  319. I say to

  320. one of them

  321. at the end

  322. of this

  323. job,

  324. when you're

  325. all finished,

  326. I'm going

  327. to give

  328. you $20.

  329. to the

  330. other

  331. person,

  332. I say

  333. at the

  334. end of

  335. this

  336. job,

  337. when you're

  338. all

  339. finished,

  340. I'm going

  341. to give

  342. you $200,000.

  343. One

  344. is going

  345. to whistle

  346. when they

  347. work,

  348. the other

  349. will not,

  350. depending on

  351. the end

  352. goal.

  353. And when

  354. they have a

  355. break,

  356. one of them

  357. is going

  358. to go,

  359. I can't

  360. believe we're

  361. doing this

  362. for this.

  363. Like,

  364. this is,

  365. you look at

  366. the conditions

  367. we're dealing

  368. with here,

  369. the other

  370. one's going

  371. to go,

  372. I don't

  373. care that

  374. it's going

  375. to be

  376. 30 odd

  377. degrees today,

  378. I don't

  379. care.

  380. Hope makes

  381. all the

  382. difference

  383. of our

  384. current

  385. experience.

  386. My point

  387. is we

  388. are hope

  389. driven and

  390. the new

  391. birth changes

  392. our hopes.

  393. The new

  394. birth gives

  395. us a hope

  396. that is

  397. imperishable.

  398. And that

  399. is the

  400. contrast with

  401. every other

  402. hope that

  403. this world

  404. offers us.

  405. It

  406. perishes,

  407. it fades,

  408. it spoils.

  409. Put your

  410. hope in

  411. a career,

  412. you'll have

  413. to retire.

  414. Put your

  415. hope in

  416. money,

  417. you're never

  418. secure.

  419. Hope in

  420. your family,

  421. it's

  422. potentially

  423. the last

  424. one left.

  425. So how

  426. does this

  427. new hope

  428. grow in

  429. us?

  430. How do

  431. we wrench

  432. our hearts

  433. away from

  434. hopes that

  435. will fade

  436. and perish

  437. and put it

  438. into a

  439. hope that

  440. will never

  441. perish,

  442. fade or

  443. disappoint in

  444. any way?

  445. How do

  446. you make

  447. that shift?

  448. There are

  449. multiple ways

  450. that that

  451. happens in

  452. the New

  453. Testament,

  454. but the

  455. main way

  456. that 1

  457. Peter talks

  458. about growing

  459. in new

  460. life and

  461. new hope

  462. and therefore

  463. to become

  464. more like

  465. Jesus in

  466. character,

  467. more stable

  468. in life,

  469. more loving

  470. and joyful,

  471. the more

  472. shaped into

  473. his image

  474. and his

  475. priorities.

  476. The 1

  477. Peter speaks

  478. about one

  479. way primarily

  480. that that is

  481. affected in

  482. your life.

  483. The new

  484. birth grows

  485. in you

  486. and the

  487. hope grows

  488. in you

  489. and it's

  490. surprising for

  491. us.

  492. It's

  493. suffering.

  494. Suffering.

  495. In fact,

  496. I think I

  497. would declare,

  498. I'm assuming

  499. someone else

  500. would say the

  501. same,

  502. that apart

  503. from the

  504. book of

  505. Job in

  506. the Old

  507. Testament,

  508. 1 and 2

  509. Peter,

  510. but particularly

  511. 1 Peter,

  512. are the

  513. greatest

  514. books of

  515. the theology

  516. of suffering

  517. in the

  518. Bible.

  519. Suffering.

  520. Now,

  521. I'm going to

  522. say a lot

  523. more about

  524. that in a

  525. few weeks,

  526. so I don't

  527. really want

  528. to steal

  529. all that

  530. thunder now,

  531. but here's

  532. a taste.

  533. Verse 6,

  534. In all

  535. this you

  536. greatly

  537. rejoice,

  538. though now

  539. for a little

  540. while you

  541. may have

  542. had to

  543. suffer grief

  544. in all

  545. kinds of

  546. trials.

  547. These have

  548. come so

  549. that the

  550. proven

  551. genuineness

  552. of your

  553. faith,

  554. of greater

  555. worth than

  556. gold,

  557. which perishes

  558. even though

  559. refined by

  560. fire,

  561. may result

  562. in praise,

  563. glory,

  564. and honour

  565. when Jesus

  566. Christ is

  567. revealed.

  568. The first

  569. words of

  570. verse 6

  571. say that

  572. the Christian

  573. rejoices in

  574. their

  575. hope.

  576. rejoices in

  577. their hope.

  578. The word

  579. is in

  580. actual fact

  581. a present

  582. tense.

  583. You're

  584. rejoicing in

  585. your hope

  586. now.

  587. What makes

  588. that remarkable

  589. is that the

  590. words suffer

  591. grief are

  592. connected to

  593. it.

  594. And the

  595. words suffer

  596. grief actually

  597. mean to be

  598. in agony,

  599. lots of

  600. pain,

  601. pain.

  602. It doesn't

  603. say you

  604. used to

  605. rejoice but

  606. unfortunately

  607. now you're

  608. suffering

  609. agony.

  610. Nor does

  611. it say that

  612. because you've

  613. got lots to

  614. rejoice about,

  615. you're not

  616. actually really

  617. in pain,

  618. you know,

  619. get over

  620. yourselves,

  621. move on,

  622. take some

  623. Panadol,

  624. have a lie

  625. down,

  626. it's not

  627. really that

  628. bad.

  629. both the

  630. feeling of

  631. the agony

  632. and the

  633. rejoicing

  634. are both

  635. present

  636. tense.

  637. They are

  638. concurrent

  639. activities.

  640. And what

  641. 1 Peter

  642. says here,

  643. when we do

  644. both of those

  645. things at the

  646. same time,

  647. it's like

  648. putting gold

  649. into a

  650. furnace.

  651. it refines

  652. you and

  653. grows you

  654. as the

  655. suffering

  656. drives you

  657. deeper and

  658. deeper and

  659. deeper into

  660. your real

  661. hope,

  662. the hope

  663. that can

  664. never perish,

  665. spoil or

  666. fade.

  667. And yet,

  668. this is

  669. almost never

  670. our view

  671. of suffering.

  672. in a

  673. day and

  674. a culture

  675. that suggests

  676. our personal

  677. happiness

  678. is of

  679. the highest

  680. importance,

  681. then anything

  682. hard,

  683. anything

  684. difficult,

  685. anything

  686. unpleasant

  687. is considered

  688. bad,

  689. wrong and

  690. evil.

  691. And it's

  692. God's job

  693. to take it

  694. away from

  695. me in

  696. order that I

  697. might be

  698. able to

  699. rejoice.

  700. we

  701. therefore

  702. cannot

  703. possibly

  704. imagine

  705. because

  706. we've

  707. been so

  708. marinated

  709. in such

  710. a culture,

  711. we cannot

  712. possibly

  713. imagine

  714. why God

  715. would allow

  716. suffering and

  717. hardship

  718. come into

  719. my life

  720. at all.

  721. So,

  722. imagine a

  723. forestry

  724. worker.

  725. They have

  726. marked out a

  727. bunch of

  728. trees,

  729. they're going

  730. to cut

  731. them down

  732. and they're

  733. going to

  734. get set

  735. off to

  736. the sawmill

  737. and then

  738. they come

  739. in to do

  740. their job

  741. and they

  742. notice at

  743. the top

  744. of one of

  745. this tree

  746. they're about

  747. to cut

  748. down,

  749. there's

  750. this bird,

  751. a lovely

  752. bird,

  753. making a

  754. nest,

  755. it's building

  756. a nest

  757. in the top

  758. of the

  759. tree in

  760. the forest

  761. where it

  762. goes,

  763. you know,

  764. so they

  765. bang on

  766. the tree,

  767. make lots

  768. of noise

  769. to get the

  770. bird to

  771. move on

  772. and much

  773. to their

  774. delight the

  775. bird flies

  776. and moves

  777. to the next

  778. tree.

  779. Oh,

  780. starts

  781. bang on

  782. that tree,

  783. bang,

  784. bang,

  785. bang,

  786. lots of

  787. noise,

  788. get the

  789. bird to

  790. move on,

  791. bird moves

  792. on to the

  793. third tree,

  794. oh,

  795. here comes

  796. the forestry

  797. work of

  798. the bird,

  799. what is

  800. wrong with

  801. this person?

  802. Like,

  803. seriously,

  804. give me a

  805. break here,

  806. I'm just

  807. trying to

  808. build my

  809. nest,

  810. trying to

  811. raise a

  812. family,

  813. you know,

  814. like,

  815. what is

  816. wrong with

  817. this forest?

  818. Bang,

  819. bang,

  820. bang on

  821. the tree

  822. again and

  823. the bird

  824. gets up

  825. and flies

  826. off and

  827. lands on

  828. a rock,

  829. starts to

  830. build the

  831. nest and

  832. notices the

  833. forestry

  834. worker leaves

  835. them alone.

  836. The older

  837. we get,

  838. we realise

  839. that every

  840. tree,

  841. every hope

  842. will come

  843. down.

  844. will

  845. come down.

  846. We don't

  847. believe it

  848. when we're

  849. young.

  850. When we're

  851. young,

  852. we think

  853. that whatever

  854. tree that

  855. we try to

  856. plant our

  857. nest in

  858. will be

  859. there all

  860. the time.

  861. As you

  862. get older,

  863. you realise

  864. every tree,

  865. every hope

  866. will eventually

  867. come down.

  868. And yet

  869. every generation

  870. thinks it'll

  871. be able to

  872. do what no

  873. other generation

  874. has been

  875. able to do

  876. before it.

  877. Our hearts

  878. are not

  879. designed to

  880. be completely

  881. fulfilled by

  882. anything or

  883. everything in

  884. this life.

  885. We simply

  886. don't realise

  887. the greatness

  888. of our souls

  889. and the depth

  890. of our desires

  891. and our hopes.

  892. And the best

  893. thing that God

  894. can do for us

  895. while we live

  896. in this body,

  897. in this world,

  898. before Jesus

  899. comes back,

  900. is to bang

  901. on every tree

  902. that we build

  903. our lives on.

  904. until we

  905. reach the

  906. solid rock,

  907. the sure

  908. foundation that

  909. is the

  910. gospel of

  911. Jesus Christ

  912. alone.

  913. An

  914. imperishable

  915. hope,

  916. a greater

  917. hope,

  918. a sure

  919. foundation.

  920. The worst

  921. thing that can

  922. happen for us

  923. is to be left

  924. to our own

  925. devices to

  926. build our

  927. nests at the

  928. top of the

  929. tree,

  930. build our

  931. lives on

  932. something that

  933. will in short

  934. time come

  935. crushing down.

  936. So who

  937. then makes

  938. this new

  939. birth

  940. possible?

  941. How can

  942. Peter say

  943. that if you're

  944. a Christian,

  945. this new

  946. birth,

  947. you have a

  948. new birth,

  949. you have a

  950. living and

  951. perishable

  952. hope?

  953. How's that

  954. possible?

  955. How can

  956. he say

  957. that when

  958. we know

  959. of ourselves,

  960. we constantly

  961. fail God,

  962. we fail each

  963. other,

  964. how can

  965. he say,

  966. we even

  967. fail ourselves,

  968. how can

  969. we possibly

  970. have that

  971. kind of

  972. hope,

  973. sure hope?

  974. None of

  975. us have

  976. loved God

  977. and loved

  978. our neighbours

  979. ourselves all

  980. of the time.

  981. We haven't

  982. done it,

  983. we never

  984. will.

  985. How can

  986. Peter promise

  987. us a hope

  988. that will

  989. never,

  990. ever perish,

  991. never come

  992. crashing down,

  993. never fade?

  994. Verse 10,

  995. concerning this

  996. salvation,

  997. the prophets

  998. who spoke

  999. of the

  1000. grace that

  1001. was to

  1002. come to

  1003. you,

  1004. searched

  1005. intently

  1006. and with

  1007. the greatest

  1008. care,

  1009. trying to

  1010. find out

  1011. the time

  1012. and the

  1013. circumstances

  1014. to which

  1015. the Spirit

  1016. of Christ

  1017. in them

  1018. was pointing

  1019. when he

  1020. predicted

  1021. the sufferings

  1022. of the

  1023. Messiah

  1024. and the

  1025. glories

  1026. that would

  1027. follow.

  1028. It was

  1029. revealed to

  1030. them that

  1031. they were

  1032. not serving

  1033. themselves

  1034. but you

  1035. when they

  1036. spoke of

  1037. the things

  1038. that have

  1039. now been

  1040. told you

  1041. by those

  1042. who have

  1043. preached

  1044. the gospel

  1045. to you

  1046. by the

  1047. Holy Spirit

  1048. sent from

  1049. heaven.

  1050. Even

  1051. angels

  1052. long to

  1053. look into

  1054. these

  1055. things.

  1056. What is

  1057. the gospel

  1058. that the

  1059. prophets

  1060. revealed

  1061. centuries

  1062. before

  1063. and that

  1064. the apostles

  1065. preached?

  1066. What is

  1067. the gospel?

  1068. It is

  1069. that Jesus

  1070. Christ

  1071. suffered.

  1072. He

  1073. suffered.

  1074. The

  1075. Son of

  1076. God,

  1077. the

  1078. Creator

  1079. of all

  1080. things

  1081. came

  1082. as

  1083. the

  1084. rescuer

  1085. and

  1086. the

  1087. ruler

  1088. of all

  1089. of

  1090. humanity

  1091. in

  1092. weakness.

  1093. Not in

  1094. triumph,

  1095. in

  1096. weakness.

  1097. He died

  1098. on a

  1099. Roman

  1100. cross

  1101. for the

  1102. sin

  1103. and the

  1104. failure

  1105. of

  1106. humanity.

  1107. He

  1108. died

  1109. the

  1110. death

  1111. that we

  1112. should

  1113. die.

  1114. We,

  1115. the

  1116. weak

  1117. and the

  1118. perishing,

  1119. have a

  1120. glorious

  1121. and

  1122. imperishable

  1123. hope

  1124. in

  1125. Jesus

  1126. Christ,

  1127. the

  1128. glorious

  1129. and

  1130. the

  1131. eternal

  1132. one

  1133. because

  1134. he

  1135. perished

  1136. in

  1137. shame

  1138. for

  1139. us.

  1140. Our

  1141. new

  1142. birth

  1143. and

  1144. glorious

  1145. hope

  1146. are not

  1147. based on

  1148. our

  1149. performance.

  1150. It is

  1151. based on

  1152. the

  1153. performance

  1154. of the

  1155. imperishable

  1156. one,

  1157. the one

  1158. who died

  1159. but rose

  1160. again

  1161. and lives

  1162. forever

  1163. and reigns

  1164. forever.

  1165. The

  1166. Christian's

  1167. ultimate

  1168. glory

  1169. is

  1170. assured

  1171. because

  1172. he

  1173. emptied

  1174. himself

  1175. of his

  1176. glory.

  1177. So it's

  1178. all his

  1179. work.

  1180. So what

  1181. are we

  1182. called to

  1183. do then

  1184. in order

  1185. to build

  1186. this hope?

  1187. If you're

  1188. a Christian,

  1189. what do

  1190. you do?

  1191. It says

  1192. there that

  1193. the angels

  1194. never get

  1195. tired of

  1196. looking at

  1197. what Jesus

  1198. has done

  1199. for us.

  1200. In fact,

  1201. the word

  1202. there

  1203. means,

  1204. the word

  1205. too long

  1206. there means

  1207. to lust

  1208. for something.

  1209. The angels

  1210. are lusting

  1211. after the

  1212. work of

  1213. Jesus.

  1214. That is,

  1215. there's nothing

  1216. greater for

  1217. an angel

  1218. to do

  1219. than to

  1220. look at

  1221. and ponder

  1222. more and

  1223. desire more

  1224. what Jesus

  1225. Christ has

  1226. done for

  1227. humanity

  1228. in salvation.

  1229. I find

  1230. that astounding

  1231. because it's

  1232. a present

  1233. lusting.

  1234. What I find

  1235. astounding

  1236. about that

  1237. is that

  1238. how long

  1239. have angels

  1240. been around

  1241. for?

  1242. people,

  1243. I'm

  1244. assuming

  1245. they're

  1246. around

  1247. for a

  1248. long

  1249. time,

  1250. like a

  1251. lot longer

  1252. than a

  1253. human

  1254. being,

  1255. you know,

  1256. for millennia.

  1257. and it

  1258. says here

  1259. that their

  1260. hearts

  1261. never grow

  1262. weary

  1263. of the

  1264. gospel.

  1265. Searching

  1266. it out,

  1267. its

  1268. implications,

  1269. seeing

  1270. connections,

  1271. never grow

  1272. weary of

  1273. it.

  1274. And that

  1275. is how we

  1276. heal our

  1277. hearts

  1278. of the

  1279. despair

  1280. that we

  1281. have.

  1282. keep

  1283. looking at

  1284. the

  1285. gospel

  1286. and his

  1287. living

  1288. hope

  1289. will

  1290. grow

  1291. in our

  1292. hearts

  1293. and it

  1294. will

  1295. change

  1296. us

  1297. more

  1298. and more

  1299. into the

  1300. likeness

  1301. and the

  1302. priorities

  1303. of Jesus

  1304. Christ.

  1305. Never

  1306. get tired

  1307. of the

  1308. gospel.

  1309. Lust

  1310. after the

  1311. gospel.

  1312. Now,

  1313. I'm also

  1314. mindful that

  1315. not everyone

  1316. here is a

  1317. Christian,

  1318. tuning in

  1319. either building

  1320. or tuning

  1321. in online.

  1322. Very

  1323. mindful of

  1324. that and

  1325. you are

  1326. very welcome.

  1327. We

  1328. love to

  1329. have you

  1330. here,

  1331. that you

  1332. might

  1333. discover

  1334. something

  1335. of this

  1336. living

  1337. hope.

  1338. And I've

  1339. realised that

  1340. I've covered

  1341. a huge

  1342. topic in

  1343. a very

  1344. short

  1345. time.

  1346. I've

  1347. got a

  1348. few more

  1349. weeks to

  1350. go.

  1351. And I've

  1352. made

  1353. statements

  1354. and claims

  1355. that I

  1356. haven't

  1357. unpacked

  1358. that are

  1359. very worthy

  1360. of being

  1361. unpacked

  1362. more and

  1363. more.

  1364. I'm aware

  1365. that on

  1366. any given

  1367. Sunday,

  1368. we are

  1369. all at

  1370. different

  1371. stages of

  1372. this journey

  1373. of understanding

  1374. the gospel

  1375. of Jesus

  1376. Christ.

  1377. And so

  1378. maybe I've

  1379. made some

  1380. assumptions

  1381. today that

  1382. are not

  1383. your

  1384. assumptions.

  1385. And I

  1386. would love

  1387. to invite

  1388. you to

  1389. explore that

  1390. more with

  1391. us.

  1392. Have the

  1393. conversations

  1394. about that.

  1395. At the end

  1396. of this

  1397. month,

  1398. we are

  1399. starting a

  1400. seven-part

  1401. course called

  1402. Alpha that

  1403. explores the

  1404. big questions

  1405. of life

  1406. and the

  1407. Christian

  1408. faith.

  1409. It's a

  1410. relaxed,

  1411. it's a

  1412. safe place

  1413. to explore
