  1. 30th of July, 1967, when she was 17 years old,

  2. Johnny Erickson broke her neck diving into shallow water.

  3. During the two years of her rehabilitation in hospital,

  4. she said that she experienced anger, depression, suicidal thoughts

  5. and serious doubts about her faith in Jesus Christ.

  6. She's written over 40 books since those days

  7. and a regular conference speaker, advisor to US presidents,

  8. so on and so forth, but she wrote this in a foreword

  9. for another book around about five years ago.

  10. When a broken neck ambushed my life and left me a quadriplegic,

  11. I felt as though God had smashed me underfoot like a cigarette.

  12. At night, I would thrash my head on the pillow,

  13. hoping to break my neck at a higher level

  14. and thereby ending my misery.

  15. After I left hospital, I refused to get out of bed.

  16. My paralysis was permanent and inside I died.

  17. You don't have to be in a wheelchair to identify.

  18. You already know that sad situations sometimes don't get better.

  19. Problems don't always get solved.

  20. Conflicts don't get fixed.

  21. Children die.

  22. Couples divorce and ultimate untimely deaths

  23. rock our world and shake our faith.

  24. When we feel utterly overwhelmed,

  25. we try soaking in the tub,

  26. sweating on the treadmill,

  27. splurging on a new dress

  28. or heading to the mountains for the weekend.

  29. We smile and we say we are trusting God,

  30. but deep down we know it's a lie.

  31. We're only trusting that he won't load us up with more.

  32. A remarkable woman

  33. who has helped countless people

  34. through the process of suffering

  35. and navigating suffering.

  36. She is the woman who once said,

  37. I would rather be in a wheelchair for life with God

  38. than on my two legs without him.

  39. If you've just tuned in for us for the first time,

  40. we're in our vision series,

  41. annual vision series on new life.

  42. The new life that we have in Jesus.

  43. What we're doing is we're building up to Easter

  44. where we are looking at resurrection life,

  45. what it looks like for us right now

  46. and how this new birth, new life in Jesus,

  47. how it changes and transforms every aspect of our lives.

  48. And today we're looking at a new way of viewing suffering,

  49. managing suffering, experiencing suffering,

  50. processing suffering.

  51. So I've got four points on the St. Paul's app

  52. if you want to go there.

  53. The first one is the certainty of suffering.

  54. I get that from verse six.

  55. If in all this you greatly rejoice,

  56. though now for a little while you may have to suffer grief

  57. in all kinds of trials.

  58. Notice how that reads.

  59. You may have had to suffer grief.

  60. That statement is communicating a term

  61. from the original language,

  62. which means it is necessary to suffer grief.

  63. It is necessary.

  64. It's a certainty that you will suffer grief.

  65. Peter is saying that suffering is a certainty

  66. rather than a possibility.

  67. That is, we live in a broken world

  68. and so we should expect it

  69. rather than be shocked when it happens.

  70. Chapter four, verse 12, Peter says,

  71. do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal

  72. that has come upon you to test you

  73. as though something strange were happening to you.

  74. We should be prepared for suffering

  75. because if we are not prepared for suffering,

  76. then we're in fact not prepared for life.

  77. We're not ready for life itself.

  78. There is no way possible in this world

  79. to create some kind of designer life

  80. that is free from bereavement, illness,

  81. financial challenges, personal betrayals,

  82. and whole range of other trials.

  83. Even Jesus, the perfect man,

  84. suffered terribly to bring about God's redemptive purposes.

  85. So why would we expect anything different for ourselves?

  86. Sometimes I reckon that half of the pain

  87. that I personally experience

  88. when I suffer from a trial

  89. is from the shock of actually going through it

  90. in the first place.

  91. It's because they're not expecting it.

  92. And yet this world is deeply broken,

  93. deeply, deeply broken.

  94. So that raises the second point,

  95. which is the problem of suffering.

  96. Every single culture,

  97. every single worldview

  98. has to have some kind of response

  99. to the reality of suffering,

  100. the reality of trials

  101. and the brokenness of this world.

  102. If a worldview does not have a response to it,

  103. it's a defective worldview there and then.

  104. It's the issue

  105. that every single human being faces,

  106. rich or poor,

  107. no matter what culture you are from.

  108. So how does it deal

  109. with the big question of suffering?

  110. Human suffering poses questions like,

  111. for instance, the Christian,

  112. how could a loving God allow so much suffering?

  113. How can the hypothesis of a loving, powerful God

  114. stand against the crushing weight

  115. of human suffering?

  116. What's your worldview?

  117. What's your answer to that question?

  118. Well, the famous atheist Richard Dawkins

  119. looks at all the weight of human suffering

  120. and declares that our universe

  121. has precisely the properties

  122. we would expect,

  123. we should expect,

  124. if there is at bottom

  125. no design,

  126. no purpose,

  127. no evil,

  128. no good,

  129. nothing but blind,

  130. pitiless indifference.

  131. That is the secular human response.

  132. The atheistic response to human suffering

  133. is that there is no meaning at all.

  134. At all.

  135. So what Dawkins does,

  136. and Sam Harris and other,

  137. you know,

  138. more prominent atheists do,

  139. and the atheistic worldview,

  140. is that if you remove God

  141. from the equation,

  142. then what you have is relief.

  143. The problem with human suffering

  144. is God.

  145. So take God out of the equation

  146. and somehow you will have relief.

  147. In other words,

  148. there is no meaning,

  149. there is no reason,

  150. there is no hope,

  151. so stop worrying about

  152. trying to find some greater purpose in life

  153. when you're in the midst of trauma and trial

  154. and you'll feel better about yourself.

  155. Already feeling relieved.

  156. But it is an incredibly bleak view

  157. of the universe.

  158. It in fact erodes the very foundations

  159. of which we balance life

  160. and our humanness itself.

  161. If there is no good

  162. and there is no evil

  163. and there is no purpose to it at all,

  164. why is there in the human heart

  165. an instinct to lament

  166. in the face of suffering?

  167. Why has evolution not removed that?

  168. If that's all we are,

  169. byproducts of evolution.

  170. If human sympathy for others

  171. is just simply a byproduct

  172. of evolutionary kinship,

  173. which is evolutionary biologists claim,

  174. then why do we empathise

  175. with the suffering

  176. of those outside of our tribe?

  177. Why do we even empathise

  178. with suffering

  179. even in the natural world?

  180. Especially weaker beings

  181. than human beings.

  182. Why do we care about that?

  183. You see, the irony is

  184. that today

  185. at the core of secular humanism

  186. is that they don't actually believe

  187. in human beings

  188. any more than they believe

  189. in a creator God.

  190. That's the problem

  191. with secular humanism.

  192. The secular humanists,

  193. for them,

  194. both God

  195. and humanity

  196. is a delusion.

  197. When you remove meaning

  198. from suffering,

  199. it doesn't

  200. solve the problem.

  201. It unravels

  202. our humanity.

  203. It unravels

  204. our very sense of self.

  205. secular humanism's

  206. answer to suffering

  207. leaves you

  208. with no hope

  209. whatsoever.

  210. Human beings

  211. are nothing more

  212. than little kids

  213. trying to build

  214. sandcastles

  215. in the face

  216. of a relentless

  217. rising tide.

  218. Your life

  219. is purposeless.

  220. And so let me just say,

  221. and I say this

  222. with all gentleness,

  223. but with intention,

  224. if that is your worldview,

  225. if that is your worldview,

  226. and especially right now,

  227. and I say this pastorally to you,

  228. if that is your worldview,

  229. and right now

  230. you are in the face

  231. of suffering,

  232. can I please

  233. encourage you

  234. in this moment

  235. not to reach

  236. for the placebos

  237. of false hope?

  238. Too many

  239. who hold to

  240. the secular human worldview

  241. will still say

  242. things like

  243. the universe

  244. has got some kind

  245. of plan in this.

  246. It's not

  247. God's got some kind

  248. of plan,

  249. but the universe

  250. has got some kind

  251. of plan

  252. in my suffering.

  253. It's a placebo

  254. and nothing more

  255. for you

  256. in the face

  257. of suffering.

  258. If there is

  259. no God

  260. and we still

  261. suffer,

  262. there is

  263. no universe

  264. to care.

  265. There is

  266. no purpose

  267. in the universe

  268. for your suffering.

  269. There is

  270. nothing but

  271. blind,

  272. pitiless

  273. indifference

  274. for you

  275. in the face

  276. of your suffering.

  277. And I'm saying

  278. this gently.

  279. You are doing

  280. yourself

  281. an enormous

  282. favour

  283. in the midst

  284. of your suffering

  285. as a secular

  286. humanist

  287. to stare

  288. in the abyss

  289. of your worldview.

  290. Do not reach

  291. for placebos.

  292. Stare

  293. into the abyss

  294. of your worldview

  295. and all

  296. of its

  297. implications

  298. rather than

  299. reaching for

  300. platitudes

  301. that are

  302. inconsistent

  303. with your

  304. worldview.

  305. Well,

  306. that's

  307. one side.

  308. One other

  309. alternative,

  310. one of the

  311. favourite

  312. options

  313. in the

  314. Western world

  315. these days,

  316. those who

  317. are dissatisfied

  318. with Christianity

  319. on the one

  320. end,

  321. but not wanting

  322. to jump

  323. entirely

  324. into the

  325. bleakness

  326. of a secular

  327. humanist worldview

  328. on the other

  329. end,

  330. is to go

  331. middle way

  332. and go for

  333. Buddhism

  334. and its

  335. response

  336. of suffering.

  337. Buddhism's

  338. response

  339. to the

  340. inevitability

  341. of suffering

  342. is to

  343. break the

  344. ties of

  345. attachment

  346. that bind

  347. us to

  348. life.

  349. In other

  350. words,

  351. in Buddhism,

  352. to love

  353. is to be

  354. vulnerable

  355. and to be

  356. vulnerable

  357. is to

  358. hurt.

  359. To desire

  360. and to

  361. strive for

  362. things is

  363. to risk

  364. disappointment.

  365. I won't

  366. go into

  367. unpacking

  368. it all,

  369. but again,

  370. you end up

  371. with the

  372. same problem.

  373. to detach

  374. yourself

  375. from love,

  376. from striving,

  377. from desire,

  378. is in fact

  379. to detach

  380. yourself

  381. from everything

  382. that's joyous

  383. in life,

  384. purposeful

  385. in life,

  386. and therefore

  387. detach yourself

  388. once again

  389. from your

  390. humanness.

  391. So let me

  392. just jump

  393. to my

  394. third point.

  395. What's the

  396. Christian

  397. response?

  398. I want to

  399. say the

  400. Christian

  401. response

  402. is very

  403. broadly

  404. a good

  405. potential

  406. for

  407. suffering.

  408. Despite

  409. the

  410. inevitability

  411. of

  412. suffering,

  413. Christianity

  414. declares

  415. there is

  416. a good

  417. potential.

  418. The

  419. Christian

  420. worldview

  421. says

  422. that we

  423. can

  424. pursue

  425. desire

  426. against

  427. Buddhism,

  428. we can

  429. pursue

  430. desire,

  431. we can

  432. cling

  433. to

  434. attachment,

  435. we can

  436. strive

  437. for good

  438. things,

  439. while also

  440. finding meaning

  441. in the

  442. suffering

  443. that comes

  444. to us,

  445. as well

  446. as hope

  447. for the

  448. future

  449. in the

  450. midst

  451. of that

  452. suffering.

  453. Peter

  454. gives us

  455. a really

  456. helpful

  457. image of

  458. suffering

  459. here,

  460. and it

  461. would do

  462. well for

  463. us to

  464. reflect on

  465. it for

  466. a moment.

  467. Verse 7

  468. of chapter

  469. 1.

  470. Gold,

  471. I don't

  472. know really

  473. anything about

  474. mining,

  475. so this

  476. is Google

  477. for you,

  478. right?

  479. Gold

  480. goes through

  481. a furnace

  482. and is

  483. purified.

  484. What Paul

  485. is saying

  486. here is the

  487. same thing

  488. happens to

  489. our faith

  490. and to

  491. our lives,

  492. to our

  493. character,

  494. when we

  495. go through

  496. suffering.

  497. It's good

  498. because our

  499. faith is

  500. far more

  501. valuable than

  502. gold,

  503. so we

  504. should want

  505. to go

  506. through it

  507. because it's

  508. more precious

  509. than gold.

  510. Gold,

  511. in the end,

  512. will disappear

  513. like everything

  514. else on the

  515. face of this

  516. earth.

  517. earth,

  518. but faith

  519. in Jesus

  520. Christ will

  521. not disappear.

  522. It will be

  523. on for

  524. eternity,

  525. so this is

  526. a good

  527. process for

  528. us,

  529. preparing us

  530. for that

  531. day in

  532. his presence.

  533. The

  534. furnace,

  535. the gold

  536. furnace,

  537. does not

  538. destroy the

  539. gold,

  540. but it

  541. deals with

  542. the impurities.

  543. The

  544. furnace

  545. separates

  546. the valuable

  547. gold from

  548. the worthless

  549. impurities.

  550. It

  551. separates the

  552. impurities in

  553. such a way

  554. that what it

  555. does is it

  556. brings the

  557. impurities to

  558. the surface

  559. so they

  560. can be

  561. seen and

  562. removed.

  563. What Peter's

  564. saying here

  565. is that our

  566. faith and

  567. our lives

  568. have lots of

  569. impurities in

  570. them.

  571. In so many

  572. cases, we

  573. have this

  574. mixture of

  575. faith in

  576. Jesus Christ

  577. and yet at

  578. the same

  579. time, faith

  580. in other

  581. things as

  582. well.

  583. Faith in

  584. relationships

  585. and in

  586. status and

  587. in children

  588. and our

  589. financial

  590. security and

  591. the list

  592. goes on

  593. and on

  594. and on.

  595. The New

  596. Testament, the

  597. Old Testament

  598. refers to it

  599. as idolatry.

  600. We worship

  601. God, but we

  602. also worship

  603. these other

  604. things as

  605. well.

  606. We look to

  607. these particular

  608. things to

  609. give us

  610. meaning, our

  611. self-worth, our

  612. self-esteem, our

  613. self-image in

  614. life.

  615. Whatever it

  616. is, that's

  617. what we trust.

  618. That's where

  619. our faith is.

  620. They can even

  621. be great

  622. things.

  623. But we

  624. overinvest

  625. our hearts

  626. in them

  627. and they

  628. become things

  629. that we

  630. hope in.

  631. And whenever

  632. any of those

  633. things, whatever

  634. it might be

  635. for us,

  636. whenever any

  637. of those

  638. things are

  639. rocked, we

  640. feel so

  641. fragile in

  642. life.

  643. We feel

  644. fragile because

  645. the things

  646. that we have

  647. our trust in

  648. are so

  649. fragile.

  650. Their

  651. impurities

  652. rising to

  653. the surface.

  654. They're

  655. fragile because

  656. everything in

  657. this world is

  658. fragile.

  659. And the

  660. furnace of

  661. life, suffering,

  662. rises to the

  663. surface, the

  664. fragility of

  665. what we have

  666. put our hope

  667. in.

  668. The furnace of

  669. life shows us

  670. just how little

  671. we actually

  672. trust in

  673. Jesus Christ.

  674. suffering shows

  675. us that

  676. his love

  677. and his

  678. power is

  679. often not

  680. real to us.

  681. And when

  682. this happens,

  683. there's really

  684. only two ways

  685. to respond.

  686. Either it's

  687. the case of

  688. God, you

  689. are not

  690. enough for

  691. me right

  692. now, and

  693. I've got to

  694. also have

  695. my wealth,

  696. I've also

  697. got to have

  698. my reputation,

  699. I've got to

  700. have my

  701. beauty, I've

  702. got to have

  703. the accolades,

  704. I've got to

  705. have the

  706. status.

  707. Or it's a

  708. case of

  709. holding on

  710. to God and

  711. asking him

  712. to purify

  713. you so

  714. that he is

  715. your greatest

  716. wealth, he

  717. is your

  718. greatest

  719. stability, he

  720. is your

  721. acceptance, he

  722. is your

  723. love, he

  724. is your

  725. status.

  726. And in the

  727. midst of

  728. suffering, you

  729. hold on to

  730. him, I

  731. want to know

  732. you, God,

  733. in a way that

  734. I've never

  735. known you

  736. before.

  737. And that

  738. is why

  739. suffering has

  740. the potential

  741. to turn us

  742. into pure

  743. gold.

  744. For

  745. instance,

  746. suffering

  747. humbles you

  748. and gives

  749. you a far

  750. more self-knowledge

  751. than you've

  752. ever had

  753. before.

  754. Suffering

  755. teaches you

  756. not to

  757. over-invest

  758. your heart

  759. into good

  760. things in

  761. such a way

  762. that they

  763. become ultimate

  764. things.

  765. Suffering

  766. significantly

  767. enhances your

  768. experience of

  769. God's love

  770. in his

  771. presence.

  772. Suffering

  773. makes you

  774. more wise

  775. and compassionate,

  776. loving and

  777. generally,

  778. and might I

  779. say this as

  780. well,

  781. generally more

  782. useful to

  783. other people,

  784. especially

  785. those who are

  786. suffering

  787. themselves.

  788. A couple

  789. of weeks

  790. ago I

  791. used the

  792. illustration

  793. of the

  794. forester

  795. going in

  796. to cut

  797. trees

  798. and there's

  799. a bird

  800. building a

  801. nest and

  802. he's

  803. whacking

  804. on the

  805. tree.

  806. Get off

  807. there.

  808. This

  809. tree's

  810. about to

  811. fall.

  812. I'm

  813. going to

  814. cut it

  815. down and

  816. the bird

  817. flies to

  818. the next

  819. one.

  820. So he

  821. whacks on

  822. that tree

  823. and whacks

  824. on the

  825. other one

  826. and then

  827. whacks

  828. on the

  829. other one

  830. and sometimes

  831. we have

  832. the experience

  833. of that

  834. with God.

  835. God,

  836. what are

  837. you doing?

  838. Like this

  839. little bird,

  840. what's your

  841. problem,

  842. lumberjack?

  843. What are you

  844. doing here?

  845. And what

  846. he's doing

  847. each time

  848. is he's

  849. moving us

  850. from every

  851. tree that's

  852. going to

  853. fall until

  854. we eventually

  855. land.

  856. And the

  857. bird notices

  858. when the

  859. bird sits

  860. on the

  861. rock and

  862. builds its

  863. nest on

  864. the rock.

  865. Lumberjack

  866. leaves him

  867. alone.

  868. That's what

  869. God does

  870. for us in

  871. life.

  872. That's what

  873. suffering

  874. moves us

  875. to a

  876. deeper,

  877. deeper

  878. security.

  879. The only

  880. hope is

  881. Jesus

  882. Christ.

  883. Malcolm

  884. Muggeridge

  885. was an

  886. English

  887. journalist

  888. in the

  889. last

  890. century.

  891. He was

  892. an

  893. agnostic

  894. most of

  895. his life,

  896. but he

  897. became a

  898. Christian

  899. late in

  900. life in

  901. his 60s.

  902. When he

  903. was 75

  904. and reflecting

  905. on the

  906. numerous

  907. challenges

  908. that he

  909. faced in

  910. life,

  911. some,

  912. in fact,

  913. I would

  914. probably say

  915. many were

  916. self-inflicted

  917. challenges he

  918. faced in

  919. life.

  920. He wrote

  921. this,

  922. I can

  923. say with

  924. complete

  925. truthfulness

  926. that everything

  927. I've learned

  928. in my 75

  929. years in

  930. this world,

  931. everything that

  932. has truly

  933. enhanced and

  934. enlightened my

  935. existence has

  936. been through

  937. affliction and

  938. not through

  939. happiness,

  940. whether pursued

  941. or attained.

  942. In other

  943. words, if it

  944. ever were to

  945. be possible to

  946. eliminate affliction

  947. from our

  948. earthly existence

  949. by means of

  950. some drug or

  951. other medical

  952. mumbo-jumbo,

  953. the result

  954. would not be

  955. to make life

  956. delectable,

  957. but to make

  958. it so banal

  959. and trivial

  960. to be

  961. endurable.

  962. This, of

  963. course, is

  964. what the cross

  965. signifies,

  966. and it is the

  967. cross more

  968. than anything

  969. else that has

  970. called me

  971. inexorably to

  972. Christ.

  973. So my last

  974. point is how

  975. do we pursue

  976. this good

  977. potential in

  978. life?

  979. Notice

  980. there's three

  981. things in

  982. some verses

  983. here that I

  984. want to pull

  985. out, and

  986. there's multiple

  987. things, I

  988. just want to

  989. mention three.

  990. These are, if

  991. you like, three

  992. disciplines to

  993. pursue in

  994. order to

  995. experience the

  996. positive outcome

  997. of suffering in

  998. our life.

  999. The first

  1000. thing, really

  1001. simply, is

  1002. cry.

  1003. Is cry.

  1004. Verse six,

  1005. in all this

  1006. you greatly

  1007. rejoice, even

  1008. though now for

  1009. a little while

  1010. you may have

  1011. to suffer

  1012. grief in

  1013. all kinds

  1014. of trials.

  1015. When Peter

  1016. writes, in

  1017. all this you

  1018. greatly rejoice,

  1019. he's referring

  1020. to what he

  1021. said previously

  1022. here, all the

  1023. great things

  1024. that are gifted

  1025. to the

  1026. Christian,

  1027. gifts of

  1028. new birth, a

  1029. living hope in

  1030. Jesus, resurrection,

  1031. all the stuff

  1032. he's referred to.

  1033. And then he

  1034. writes about all

  1035. the kinds of

  1036. trials in the

  1037. present, the

  1038. bad things that

  1039. are happening,

  1040. loss, bereavement,

  1041. relational

  1042. breakdowns,

  1043. betrayals.

  1044. In all these

  1045. bad things, he

  1046. says we

  1047. suffer grief.

  1048. And the

  1049. word that he

  1050. uses there for

  1051. grief is a

  1052. word that

  1053. means agonising

  1054. pain.

  1055. Agonising

  1056. pain.

  1057. He says we

  1058. hurt.

  1059. We hurt

  1060. deeply.

  1061. And yet at

  1062. the same

  1063. time we

  1064. hurt deeply,

  1065. he's saying

  1066. that the

  1067. Christian is

  1068. rejoicing.

  1069. They're in

  1070. searing pain

  1071. and rejoicing.

  1072. And both

  1073. words are

  1074. present tenses

  1075. in the original

  1076. language.

  1077. They are

  1078. happening at

  1079. exactly the

  1080. same time.

  1081. Rejoicing and

  1082. searing pain at

  1083. exactly the

  1084. same time.

  1085. time.

  1086. I think

  1087. too many

  1088. Christians think

  1089. that rejoicing

  1090. in the midst

  1091. of suffering

  1092. is what

  1093. some Greek

  1094. philosophers would

  1095. be called

  1096. stoicism.

  1097. The

  1098. stoics in

  1099. Greek culture,

  1100. and in fact I

  1101. would say many

  1102. shame and

  1103. honour cultures

  1104. that exist

  1105. today,

  1106. work with

  1107. the view

  1108. that when

  1109. trials come

  1110. you just

  1111. simply don't

  1112. let it get

  1113. to you.

  1114. Don't let

  1115. it get to

  1116. you.

  1117. I can't

  1118. tell you how

  1119. many people

  1120. I've heard as

  1121. a pastor when

  1122. in the midst

  1123. of trial and

  1124. suffering I've

  1125. asked them

  1126. how are you

  1127. managing,

  1128. I'm not

  1129. letting it

  1130. get to

  1131. me.

  1132. The point

  1133. of 1 Peter

  1134. is let

  1135. it get to

  1136. you.

  1137. Let it

  1138. get to you.

  1139. It's not

  1140. Christianity,

  1141. stoicism is

  1142. not Christianity

  1143. and secondly

  1144. it's not

  1145. even healthy.

  1146. Read the

  1147. book of

  1148. Job.

  1149. It's a

  1150. great bit

  1151. of advice

  1152. in the midst

  1153. of suffering.

  1154. He

  1155. wrenches

  1156. his robes

  1157. and covers

  1158. himself with

  1159. ash.

  1160. Seven days

  1161. he sits on

  1162. an ash heap

  1163. mourning

  1164. in such a

  1165. way,

  1166. in such

  1167. mourning

  1168. that his

  1169. friends see

  1170. him and

  1171. don't even

  1172. recognise

  1173. him.

  1174. They

  1175. don't even

  1176. go near

  1177. him.

  1178. He

  1179. wrestles

  1180. with God

  1181. throughout

  1182. the book.

  1183. He

  1184. complains

  1185. to God

  1186. throughout

  1187. the book.

  1188. He

  1189. didn't run

  1190. from God,

  1191. he directed

  1192. it all

  1193. to God.

  1194. He was

  1195. pouring his

  1196. life out

  1197. to him and

  1198. at the end

  1199. of the book

  1200. God vindicates

  1201. him.

  1202. It's a

  1203. remarkable

  1204. thing.

  1205. At the end

  1206. of Job,

  1207. God slams

  1208. his mates

  1209. and says

  1210. that my

  1211. servant Job

  1212. was faithful

  1213. to me.

  1214. The first

  1215. principle is

  1216. when you

  1217. hurt,

  1218. hurt.

  1219. Cry.

  1220. Cry out

  1221. to God.

  1222. Stoicism

  1223. is not

  1224. Christianity.

  1225. The second

  1226. principle,

  1227. is keeping

  1228. a clear

  1229. conscience.

  1230. I get

  1231. that from

  1232. chapter 3

  1233. verse 16

  1234. that Merle

  1235. read out

  1236. for us.

  1237. Do this

  1238. with gentleness

  1239. and respect,

  1240. keeping a

  1241. clear conscience

  1242. so that

  1243. those who

  1244. speak

  1245. maliciously

  1246. against your

  1247. good behaviour

  1248. in Christ

  1249. may be ashamed

  1250. of their

  1251. slander.

  1252. What's the

  1253. connection

  1254. here?

  1255. Chapter 3

  1256. is talking

  1257. about suffering.

  1258. The suffering

  1259. of being

  1260. persecuted.

  1261. It's a particular

  1262. kind of suffering.

  1263. The suffering

  1264. of being persecuted

  1265. because of

  1266. your faith

  1267. in Jesus

  1268. Christ.

  1269. It was

  1270. very real

  1271. in Peter's

  1272. day and

  1273. for those

  1274. who are

  1275. reading this

  1276. letter for

  1277. the first

  1278. time.

  1279. So the

  1280. instruction

  1281. here

  1282. basically

  1283. is do

  1284. not return

  1285. like for

  1286. like.

  1287. Don't lie,

  1288. don't attack,

  1289. don't destroy

  1290. reputations.

  1291. Keep a

  1292. clear conscience.

  1293. Continue to

  1294. live the

  1295. Christian life,

  1296. obey God.

  1297. Now one of

  1298. the things that

  1299. happens,

  1300. the reason I'm

  1301. raising this

  1302. as a

  1303. principle,

  1304. one of the

  1305. things that

  1306. happens,

  1307. and Johnny

  1308. Erickson has

  1309. already raised

  1310. this in the

  1311. quote that I

  1312. just read out

  1313. to you earlier,

  1314. is that when

  1315. something happens

  1316. to you,

  1317. self-pity

  1318. kicks in.

  1319. And self-pity

  1320. justifies

  1321. everything.

  1322. Self-pity,

  1323. the sweating

  1324. it out on

  1325. the treadmill,

  1326. the escapes

  1327. to the

  1328. mountains,

  1329. whatever

  1330. Johnny Erickson

  1331. said,

  1332. all those

  1333. things,

  1334. the purchasing

  1335. of new

  1336. items,

  1337. because of

  1338. this,

  1339. what I've

  1340. been through,

  1341. I deserve

  1342. a new

  1343. couch.

  1344. I deserve

  1345. this.

  1346. And as a

  1347. pastor,

  1348. let me tell

  1349. you that I've

  1350. heard people

  1351. over the

  1352. years justify

  1353. even

  1354. adultery.

  1355. because of

  1356. their suffering

  1357. in life.

  1358. Keep a clear

  1359. conscience.

  1360. Run to God.

  1361. When you're

  1362. going through

  1363. trial, be very

  1364. careful about the

  1365. voice in your

  1366. head that says,

  1367. I deserve this.

  1368. All that I've

  1369. been through,

  1370. my, you know,

  1371. all of my bad

  1372. choices right now,

  1373. my bad behaviour,

  1374. it's all warranted.

  1375. I deserve

  1376. this.

  1377. So cry,

  1378. but keep a

  1379. clear conscience.

  1380. Trust and obey.

  1381. Keep doing

  1382. things that God

  1383. requires you.

  1384. Keep taking

  1385. your next steps

  1386. of faith.

  1387. Again,

  1388. as a pastor,

  1389. over three

  1390. decades,

  1391. the number of

  1392. people in the

  1393. midst of suffering,

  1394. how much they

  1395. pull back.

  1396. how they pull

  1397. back out of a

  1398. community group,

  1399. pull back out

  1400. from church,

  1401. pull back from

  1402. I'm just going

  1403. through a hard

  1404. season right now.

  1405. And so they

  1406. pull back and

  1407. pull back and

  1408. pull back and

  1409. pull back and

  1410. pull back.

  1411. Be careful of

  1412. those voices in

  1413. your head that

  1414. say, right now,

  1415. because of what

  1416. I'm suffering,

  1417. I deserve

  1418. this.

  1419. The third

  1420. principle to

  1421. pursue suffering

  1422. is to look to

  1423. the suffering of

  1424. Jesus Christ.

  1425. Take a look at

  1426. chapter 3,

  1427. verse 18.

  1428. For Christ

  1429. also suffered

  1430. once for sins,

  1431. the righteous for

  1432. the unrighteous to

  1433. bring you to

  1434. God.

  1435. Now,

  1436. we've been

  1437. talking here,

  1438. Peter's been

  1439. talking about

  1440. gold being

  1441. refined in

  1442. fire,

  1443. in a fiery

  1444. furnace.

  1445. The Bible

  1446. tells the story

  1447. of the fiery

  1448. furnace in

  1449. Daniel chapter

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  1450. 3 in the

  1451. Old Testament.

  1452. It's the

  1453. story of

  1454. three young

  1455. Jewish men,

  1456. Shadrach,

  1457. Meshach,

  1458. and Abednego.

  1459. A decree

  1460. had been

  1461. put out

  1462. through the

  1463. entire Babylonian

  1464. empire,

  1465. where they were

  1466. captives at this

  1467. particular point,

  1468. to bow down and

  1469. worship an

  1470. image,

  1471. an idol made

  1472. of Nebuchadnezzar.

  1473. And so,

  1474. Rakshak and

  1475. Benny refused

  1476. to do it.

  1477. They refused to

  1478. bow down to

  1479. this image,

  1480. and Nebuchadnezzar,

  1481. the king,

  1482. was absolutely

  1483. livid.

  1484. He gave

  1485. instructions for

  1486. these three

  1487. guys to be

  1488. bound up,

  1489. tied up,

  1490. for the fiery

  1491. furnace to be

  1492. heated beyond

  1493. it had ever

  1494. been heated

  1495. before,

  1496. and for the

  1497. three of them

  1498. to be thrown

  1499. in and burnt

  1500. to a crisp.

  1501. The fire was

  1502. heated so hot

  1503. that the

  1504. soldiers who

  1505. grabbed them

  1506. to throw them

  1507. in were

  1508. instantaneously

  1509. killed.

  1510. And so

  1511. Nebuchadnezzar

  1512. gets to a

  1513. point,

  1514. he expects

  1515. to see

  1516. these three

  1517. guys sizzling

  1518. in the

  1519. barbecue,

  1520. but instead,

  1521. instead we

  1522. read this,

  1523. Nebuchadnezzar

  1524. leapt to his

  1525. feet in

  1526. amazement and

  1527. asked his

  1528. advisors,

  1529. weren't there

  1530. three men

  1531. that we tied

  1532. up and threw

  1533. into the

  1534. fire?

  1535. They replied,

  1536. certainly,

  1537. your majesty.

  1538. Look,

  1539. I see four

  1540. men walking

  1541. around in the

  1542. fire.

  1543. They're unbounded,

  1544. unharmed,

  1545. and the

  1546. fourth looks

  1547. like the

  1548. son of the

  1549. gods.

  1550. Notice,

  1551. didn't we tie

  1552. up three?

  1553. Well,

  1554. I'm now

  1555. noticing four

  1556. untied and

  1557. unharmed.

  1558. In the Old

  1559. Testament,

  1560. there's a

  1561. figure called

  1562. the angel of

  1563. the Lord,

  1564. not a

  1565. angel of the

  1566. Lord,

  1567. but the

  1568. angel of

  1569. the Lord.

  1570. And when

  1571. that figure

  1572. turns up,

  1573. he speaks

  1574. as God

  1575. and embodies

  1576. God.

  1577. Now,

  1578. most commentators

  1579. agree that

  1580. it is a

  1581. manifestation

  1582. of Jesus

  1583. Christ,

  1584. the Son of

  1585. God in

  1586. the Old

  1587. Testament.

  1588. And the

  1589. point is

  1590. simply this,

  1591. very simply,

  1592. when Jesus

  1593. walks with

  1594. you through

  1595. the furnace,

  1596. when he is

  1597. with you in

  1598. the furnace,

  1599. the only

  1600. thing that

  1601. comes off,

  1602. the only

  1603. thing that

  1604. comes off

  1605. is the

  1606. shackles that

  1607. bind you and

  1608. imprison you.

  1609. that's the

  1610. only thing

  1611. that comes

  1612. off.

  1613. The

  1614. impurities

  1615. rise to

  1616. the surface,

  1617. the things

  1618. that controlled

  1619. you,

  1620. the things

  1621. that addicted

  1622. you,

  1623. the things

  1624. that are

  1625. too important

  1626. to you.

  1627. If Jesus

  1628. is with

  1629. you,

  1630. you will

  1631. only come

  1632. out of

  1633. the furnace

  1634. free,

  1635. unharmed,

  1636. pure gold.

  1637. That is the

  1638. only thing

  1639. that will

  1640. happen to

  1641. you.

  1642. And how

  1643. do we

  1644. cling to

  1645. him in

  1646. the midst

  1647. of the

  1648. furnace?

  1649. Verse 18,

  1650. for Christ

  1651. also

  1652. suffered.

  1653. Christianity

  1654. is the

  1655. only religion

  1656. in the

  1657. world that

  1658. says that

  1659. God knows

  1660. personally and

  1661. firsthand the

  1662. fiery furnace

  1663. of suffering.

  1664. The only

  1665. one.

  1666. The Greek

  1667. philosopher

  1668. Aristotle once

  1669. said that it

  1670. would be

  1671. impossible for

  1672. there to be

  1673. any friendship

  1674. between a

  1675. God and

  1676. a human

  1677. being because

  1678. they don't

  1679. have anything

  1680. in common

  1681. at all.

  1682. Christianity

  1683. says the

  1684. exact opposite.

  1685. The God

  1686. who made

  1687. all things,

  1688. who took

  1689. on human

  1690. likeness in

  1691. the person

  1692. of Jesus

  1693. Christ,

  1694. suffered.

  1695. He knows

  1696. betrayal.

  1697. He knows

  1698. abuse.

  1699. He knows

  1700. rejection.

  1701. He knows

  1702. death.

  1703. He knows

  1704. physical

  1705. suffering.

  1706. He knows

  1707. it all.

  1708. He knew

  1709. what it

  1710. was to be

  1711. abandoned on

  1712. the cross.

  1713. Jesus

  1714. Christ and

  1715. him alone

  1716. can be our

  1717. consoling

  1718. friend and

  1719. our sure

  1720. hope in

  1721. the furnace

  1722. of suffering

  1723. in life

  1724. because he

  1725. himself went

  1726. into the

  1727. ultimate

  1728. furnace.

  1729. for Christ

  1730. also

  1731. suffered

  1732. once for

  1733. all for

  1734. the sins

  1735. of people,

  1736. the righteous

  1737. for the

  1738. unrighteous

  1739. to bring

  1740. you to

  1741. God.

  1742. That's the

  1743. ultimate

  1744. furnace.

  1745. The

  1746. white hot

  1747. anger of

  1748. God for

  1749. our rejection

  1750. of God.

  1751. The only

  1752. sinless one

  1753. suffered for

  1754. our sin.

  1755. He got

  1756. everything we

  1757. deserve.

  1758. if we

  1759. see him

  1760. going into

  1761. the ultimate

  1762. furnace for

  1763. you, if

  1764. you can

  1765. see that,

  1766. then you

  1767. can know

  1768. that he

  1769. is your

  1770. safety in

  1771. the furnace

  1772. of life.

  1773. If he

  1774. suffered

  1775. infinitely for

  1776. me,

  1777. then the

  1778. reality is I

  1779. can suffer

  1780. infinitely for

  1781. him, or

  1782. sorry,

  1783. finitely for

  1784. him right

  1785. now.

  1786. He is

  1787. reliable,

  1788. he is

  1789. trustworthy,

  1790. his word

  1791. is true,

  1792. and as we

  1793. journey through

  1794. the Christian

  1795. life with

  1796. a sure

  1797. expectation of

  1798. trials and

  1799. suffering,

  1800. our posture

  1801. is to be

  1802. one looking

  1803. to him

  1804. and him

  1805. alone.

  1806. A posture

  1807. that might

  1808. pray something

  1809. like this,

  1810. Jesus, you

  1811. came into

  1812. this world,

  1813. you identified

  1814. with me,

  1815. you went

  1816. into the

  1817. ultimate

  1818. furnace for

  1819. me,

  1820. you suffered

  1821. and you

  1822. died for

  1823. me,

  1824. glory,

  1825. but you

  1826. also rose

  1827. triumphantly

  1828. in spectacular

  1829. glory,

  1830. you triumphed

  1831. over sin

  1832. and evil

  1833. and death

  1834. and because

  1835. of your

  1836. triumph,

  1837. you promise

  1838. a time

  1839. is coming

  1840. just around

  1841. the corner

  1842. where in

  1843. your presence

  1844. there will

  1845. be no longer

  1846. any fiery

  1847. furnaces,

  1848. just the

  1849. cool,

  1850. sweet,

  1851. delight of

  1852. your presence

  1853. and your

  1854. purity.

  1855. And so in

  1856. the midst

  1857. of this

  1858. suffering right

  1859. now,

  1860. Jesus,

  1861. hold me,

  1862. hold me,

  1863. teach me,

  1864. strengthen me

  1865. to obey you

  1866. and walk

  1867. with you

  1868. until the

  1869. great day

  1870. of blessing

  1871. comes.

  1872. Amen.

  1873. Maybe pray

  1874. a prayer like

  1875. that.

  1876. Every day.

  1877. Every day.
