  1. In 2016, the Oxford Dictionary selected post-truth as its word of the year, as it does every year.

  2. It selects a word that sort of captures Western civilisation's vibe at that time.

  3. So post-truth was 2016.

  4. And it defines post-truth as an adjective relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal beliefs.

  5. It's a word that dates back to 1992, but its usage exploded by 2000% in 2016.

  6. Sorry, 2016.

  7. In 2016.

  8. Why?

  9. The US presidential election, which saw Donald Trump elected as president.

  10. An election campaign marked by so many competing and false claims, allegations of fraud and proven mistruths.

  11. Voices across the political spectrum were quick to condemn the opposition with little or no facts and quick to defend their stance regardless of facts.

  12. Fake news allowed agendas to advance regardless of and often contrary to the actual facts, the truth.

  13. It's hard to think of a better word suited to the spirit of our age than that of post-truth.

  14. Post-truth has now blossomed into a culture of confusion.

  15. In a post-truth world, answers to life's big questions no longer need to correspond to reality at all.

  16. They only need to cater to whatever we personally desire.

  17. The question is, as a society, are we better off?

  18. You see, confusion only gives birth to more questions.

  19. That's the nature of confusion.

  20. And more questions only builds anxiety and uncertainty.

  21. So we need answers, not just questions.

  22. And so the title of this series that we're currently in, Your Word, is Truth.

  23. Now, I understand that we exist in a culture that many people would think that the Bible fits in that category of fake news.

  24. It was written thousands of years ago over a long period of time.

  25. And it makes some incredible, in fact, startling claims.

  26. It claims that there is a God who made the universe.

  27. It claims that this God sent his son into the world to die on a cross for humanity.

  28. It claims that Jesus, the son of God, performed miracles, that he was raised from the dead,

  29. and he is now present with his followers by the Holy Spirit through his word right now.

  30. It claims that he will come back to this earth one day as the universal judge and king,

  31. wind up history, right every wrong that has ever happened,

  32. and with his people exist forever in eternal bliss.

  33. They're extraordinary claims.

  34. Extraordinary claims.

  35. And we need some pretty serious evidence to believe them.

  36. And yet, on the other hand, billions of people over time have believed these claims,

  37. including some of the smartest people in our world to this day.

  38. And, in fact, smartest people throughout history.

  39. They have believed the claims, and from all different cultures,

  40. have believed the claims of the Bible are true,

  41. and that they are authoritative over their lives.

  42. And so today, if you've got the St. Paul's app in front of you,

  43. I encourage you to open it up, open up your Bibles.

  44. We've got really three points here to kind of,

  45. each point's got, well, the first two have got three sub-points,

  46. but to build on last week's assertion that the Bible is true,

  47. and it is reliable for everything in life and faith.

  48. And the three points are, it's historically reliable, culturally reliable,

  49. and it's personally reliable.

  50. So, first of all, historically reliable.

  51. One of the common accusations today is that the Bible,

  52. and particularly the New Testament accounts about Jesus,

  53. are written by, if you like, the winners in history.

  54. And therefore, because it's written by the winners in history,

  55. no one can really know the original Jesus, what he was really like.

  56. In fact, the claim is that the claims about his miracles

  57. and the fact that he was divine and that he rose again

  58. were all written much later in history by church leaders

  59. in order to try and get Christianity to spread.

  60. In other words, it's an attempt for them to build their power base.

  61. There are, in fact, multiple reasons

  62. why those particular modern accusations are simply not right

  63. and, in fact, unfair.

  64. But I want to just give you three, very briefly,

  65. three reasons why you can trust the Bible historically

  66. about what it says about Jesus.

  67. Firstly, the New Testament accounts about Jesus

  68. are written way too early for them to be legends.

  69. Take the beginning of Luke that Anne just read out for us.

  70. Luke has written a biography about Jesus

  71. and he points out to his readers in verses 2 and 3,

  72. many have undertaken to draw up an account

  73. of the things that have been fulfilled among us

  74. just as they were handed down to us

  75. by those who from the first were eyewitnesses.

  76. I myself have carefully investigated everything

  77. from the beginning.

  78. I too decided to write an orderly account for you.

  79. Now, Luke is writing 30 to 40 years after Jesus

  80. and he makes the point

  81. that lots of people

  82. who were eyewitnesses of Jesus

  83. post his resurrection

  84. are still alive

  85. and you can check the facts with them.

  86. Now, writing even closer

  87. than Luke,

  88. closer to the events of Jesus' life

  89. was the Apostle Paul.

  90. He wrote letters only 15 to 20 years

  91. after the events of Jesus' life

  92. and he says this

  93. in 1 Corinthians 15 verse 6

    1 Corinthians 15:6

  94. about the resurrection of Jesus.

  95. He appeared to more than 500

  96. of the brothers and sisters

  97. at the same time,

  98. most of whom are still

  99. living.

  100. Paul could not have possibly written

  101. a public document

  102. promoting Christianity

  103. and make a statement like that

  104. unless it was, in fact,

  105. provable by other eyewitnesses

  106. apart from himself.

  107. Or in Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  108. Paul quotes a hymn

  109. of Jesus' divinity

  110. and if Philippians is written

  111. so close,

  112. in fact,

  113. potentially his very first letter

  114. that he wrote,

  115. so close to the events

  116. of Jesus' life

  117. and Paul is quoting

  118. in Philippians

  119. something that Christians

  120. have been declaring

  121. from outside of Philippians,

  122. right from the very early days

  123. as the gathering

  124. of the early church,

  125. Christians have been worshipping Jesus

  126. as God himself

  127. from the very beginning.

  128. Not hundreds of years later,

  129. from the very beginning,

  130. they saw him as divine.

  131. The documents of the New Testament

  132. are way too early

  133. for people just simply to say

  134. that they just said

  135. whatever they wanted about Jesus

  136. while thousands of people

  137. witnessed him in person

  138. were still alive.

  139. You just simply cannot do that

  140. historically.

  141. Secondly,

  142. the documents of the New Testament

  143. are too counterproductive

  144. to be legends.

  145. Remember that the accusation here

  146. is the Bible

  147. is what the early church leaders

  148. wanted people to believe

  149. in order to build their own power base

  150. and spread Christianity.

  151. So imagine you're one of those church leaders

  152. living, you know,

  153. 70, 80, 100, 300 years afterwards

  154. and you make up stories about Jesus

  155. so that people will believe

  156. your stories about Jesus.

  157. Would you put in those stories

  158. when you're trying to convince people

  159. that Jesus is divine son of God,

  160. saviour of the whole world,

  161. a person of perfection,

  162. would you put in there

  163. stories of Jesus,

  164. for instance,

  165. in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  166. asking his father

  167. if there's any other way,

  168. take,

  169. I don't want this plan,

  170. come up with another plan.

  171. Sweating tears of blood.

  172. Would you put in there

  173. Jesus on the cross

  174. crying out to God,

  175. why have you forsaken me?

  176. Those accounts make look,

  177. Jesus make look like he's,

  178. he wants a different way.

  179. He wants something,

  180. some other option.

  181. Makes him look weak.

  182. Would you include

  183. in your first century stories

  184. that all of the first eyewitnesses

  185. to the resurrection were women?

  186. You know,

  187. I know this is Mother's Day,

  188. so bear with me on this one.

  189. This was a time

  190. when women's evidence

  191. was not admissible in court

  192. because of their low social status.

  193. And so on today,

  194. we want to give thanks

  195. to the New Testament documents

  196. and early Christianity

  197. that changed that.

  198. Does not oppress women at all.

  199. all the gospel accounts

  200. say that the original eyewitnesses

  201. were women?

  202. And not only that,

  203. but when you get into

  204. the New Testament,

  205. you see that the apostles themselves

  206. are far from glowing figures.

  207. They're cowardly,

  208. they're slow to believe,

  209. they're self-interest.

  210. Why would you include

  211. any of that

  212. if you're making it up?

  213. These stories

  214. are totally

  215. counterproductive

  216. for consolidating power

  217. for the early leaders

  218. of the Christian movement.

  219. Thirdly,

  220. they're also too detailed

  221. to be legends.

  222. Ancient myths and novels

  223. were never written like this.

  224. Never written like this.

  225. That is the current form

  226. that we have with novels today,

  227. I think, for instance,

  228. the Da Vinci Code,

  229. where it mixes

  230. a little bit of history,

  231. historical facts,

  232. with a completely

  233. a bunch of legends in there

  234. to make people think

  235. that it's written as history.

  236. That is a very modern phenomenon

  237. in terms of a writing style.

  238. Ancient legends

  239. were never written in that way.

  240. The New Testament doctrines

  241. of Jesus

  242. don't have the forms

  243. of legend.

  244. They are written

  245. too early to be legends

  246. and they are too

  247. counterproductive

  248. to be legends.

  249. You need to be able

  250. to trust them.

  251. You go,

  252. hang on a bit, Steve,

  253. you haven't seen anything

  254. about the Old Testament.

  255. I haven't got time

  256. to go into that detail.

  257. There are plenty of books

  258. written about that as well

  259. in terms of the reliability

  260. of the Old Testament.

  261. But briefly,

  262. let me just say,

  263. if you can trust

  264. what the New Testament

  265. says about Jesus,

  266. you can trust

  267. what Jesus says

  268. about the Old Testament.

  269. And Jesus saw

  270. the Old Testament

  271. as authoritative.

  272. And it was true.

  273. He quoted virtually

  274. every book

  275. of the Old Testament

  276. and called them

  277. the Scriptures,

  278. God's Word.

  279. Secondly,

  280. my second point

  281. is that we can trust

  282. the Bible culturally.

  283. Now, I think it's true

  284. to say that modern people

  285. care less about

  286. historical reliability

  287. of the Bible

  288. because they're more

  289. troubled by the cultural

  290. aspects of the Bible.

  291. That's more of a problem

  292. for the modern person.

  293. They consider the Bible

  294. offensive,

  295. primitive,

  296. backward,

  297. in its views.

  298. The Bible offends

  299. Sydney-siders

  300. in multiple ways.

  301. Multiple ways.

  302. And it's a long list

  303. of ways

  304. that's constantly

  305. moving

  306. and changing.

  307. So here's

  308. three considerations

  309. of any bit

  310. of the Bible

  311. that might offend you.

  312. Three considerations.

  313. Firstly,

  314. consider the possibility

  315. that it isn't teaching

  316. what you think

  317. it's teaching.

  318. when you read it.

  319. For instance,

  320. I could never understand

  321. why some of the

  322. great spiritual heroes

  323. of the Old Testament

  324. had so many wives.

  325. When I first read it,

  326. and I see in the New Testament,

  327. you know,

  328. the leaders of God's church

  329. must have been

  330. a husband

  331. of one wife.

  332. And it's like,

  333. polygamy didn't seem

  334. to be a New Testament thing,

  335. but was in the Old Testament thing.

  336. And I could never understand

  337. why

  338. that was the case.

  339. Until I realized

  340. that the Bible

  341. was not in any way

  342. endorsing it.

  343. It was actually,

  344. when you read the accounts

  345. in the Old Testament,

  346. the Bible

  347. is actually

  348. subverting it.

  349. In every case

  350. where polygamy

  351. is practiced,

  352. it goes bad.

  353. And the Bible

  354. records it

  355. going bad.

  356. There's never a case

  357. of polygamy

  358. in the Old Testament

  359. where it,

  360. and they lived

  361. happily ever after,

  362. husband with 700 wives.

  363. Never

  364. do you see that

  365. in the Old Testament.

  366. Families break down,

  367. lives are ruined,

  368. physically,

  369. spiritually,

  370. emotionally,

  371. relationally.

  372. The Bible shows us

  373. consistently how bad it is,

  374. even as it records it.

  375. That is,

  376. the Bible

  377. wasn't endorsing

  378. something that I

  379. thought it was endorsing.

  380. It wasn't teaching

  381. something that I

  382. thought it was teaching.

  383. Secondly,

  384. please consider the

  385. possibility that you

  386. are misunderstanding

  387. what the Bible

  388. teaches because of

  389. your own cultural

  390. blind spots

  391. and personal

  392. preferences.

  393. Luke 24,

    Luke 24:20

  394. verses 20 and 21.

  395. Anne just read that

  396. out to us on the

  397. road to Emmaus.

  398. Sorry,

  399. it's the account

  400. of the road to Emmaus.

  401. Anne wasn't there.

  402. We see these early

  403. disciples

  404. had misunderstood

  405. the prophecies

  406. about the Messiah,

  407. the Old Testament

  408. Messiah.

  409. As Jews,

  410. their blind spots

  411. were they were

  412. only thinking

  413. about the redemption

  414. of Israel,

  415. not the whole world.

  416. They had a cultural

  417. blind spot

  418. that meant

  419. that they in fact

  420. misread

  421. scripture

  422. and couldn't

  423. therefore

  424. understand

  425. Jesus.

  426. And the modern

  427. person does the

  428. same thing

  429. on so many ways.

  430. So many ways.

  431. That long list

  432. of offensive

  433. to Sidneysiders.

  434. Let me just

  435. raise one.

  436. Slavery.

  437. One accusation

  438. is that the Bible

  439. condones slavery

  440. when we clearly

  441. know as modern

  442. people that it's

  443. wrong.

  444. wrong.

  445. And therefore,

  446. if it's wrong

  447. on this issue,

  448. then how can we

  449. trust the Bible

  450. on any

  451. moral and

  452. ethic issue?

  453. It just needs

  454. to update itself.

  455. So the question

  456. is,

  457. does the Bible

  458. actually condone

  459. slavery?

  460. Now there are

  461. parts of the New

  462. Testament

  463. when Paul tells

  464. slaves to obey

  465. their masters

  466. and we go,

  467. ah,

  468. there we go,

  469. there it is,

  470. right there.

  471. In the New

  472. Testament letter

  473. of Philemon,

  474. Paul is

  475. addressing a

  476. relationship between

  477. a master and

  478. his servant.

  479. And as Paul

  480. unpacks this

  481. relationship,

  482. it is clear

  483. that it's not

  484. the same kind

  485. of relationship

  486. that we would

  487. call slavery.

  488. slavery.

  489. When we read

  490. the word

  491. slave in our

  492. cultural context,

  493. we automatically

  494. turn our minds

  495. back to the

  496. 17th,

  497. 18th and

  498. 19th century

  499. and modern

  500. slavery.

  501. Race-based,

  502. ethnic minority

  503. slavery.

  504. slavery.

  505. And we

  506. import our

  507. cultural blind

  508. spot into

  509. every time we

  510. read the word

  511. slavery.

  512. When we read

  513. the Bible with

  514. those cultural

  515. blinders on,

  516. we are

  517. misunderstanding

  518. what the

  519. Bible is

  520. teaching.

  521. In the

  522. Greco-Roman

  523. world,

  524. slaves were

  525. not

  526. distinguishable

  527. from everyone

  528. else by race

  529. or by the

  530. way that they

  531. spoke or by

  532. the clothing

  533. that they

  534. wore.

  535. They looked

  536. and lived

  537. like everyone

  538. else and

  539. were not

  540. segregated off

  541. as part of

  542. society.

  543. Slaves were

  544. often quite

  545. educated and

  546. even more

  547. highly educated

  548. than their

  549. masters and

  550. therefore they

  551. held high

  552. positions.

  553. Therefore you

  554. see that in

  555. Luke 16.

  556. High

  557. managerial

  558. positions.

  559. Slaves also

  560. made the same

  561. wages as

  562. free labourers

  563. and therefore

  564. over time

  565. they were able

  566. to save

  567. themselves,

  568. save the

  569. money up and

  570. to buy

  571. themselves out

  572. of slavery.

  573. The average

  574. slave worked

  575. for a master

  576. in the first

  577. century for

  578. less than 10

  579. years.

  580. It was not a

  581. lifelong oppressive

  582. relationship.

  583. It was the

  584. purpose of

  585. paying back

  586. debts.

  587. So as soon

  588. as we get

  589. our modern

  590. mindset of

  591. slavery and

  592. impose it on

  593. the Bible,

  594. we have

  595. completely

  596. misunderstood

  597. scripture and

  598. what it's

  599. actually teaching

  600. in that

  601. moment.

  602. So and I

  603. want to add

  604. those who

  605. historically have

  606. to use the

  607. Bible to

  608. defend the

  609. practice of

  610. kidnapping and

  611. enslaving people

  612. such as in the

  613. slave trade of

  614. the modern era,

  615. they have read

  616. the Bible through

  617. their own cultural

  618. blind spots as

  619. well and they

  620. are wrong.

  621. In the same

  622. way we are

  623. wrong if we

  624. read the Bible

  625. through our own

  626. cultural blind

  627. spots now.

  628. Thirdly,

  629. consider the

  630. possibility that

  631. you are being

  632. offended by the

  633. Bible because of

  634. an assumption

  635. that your cultural

  636. moment is in fact

  637. superior to all

  638. others.

  639. This is

  640. offence

  641. because I

  642. am superior.

  643. Often that

  644. assumption has

  645. never been tested

  646. and it's actually

  647. never been

  648. personally

  649. acknowledged.

  650. The reason we

  651. are offended by

  652. some biblical

  653. passages is

  654. because it is

  655. culturally offensive

  656. in my own

  657. cultural moment.

  658. But

  659. in other

  660. cultures in

  661. this moment

  662. and in other

  663. cultures from

  664. the past,

  665. they have no

  666. problem with

  667. the exact same

  668. text.

  669. On the other

  670. hand, the

  671. passage we think

  672. is fine today,

  673. we're happy

  674. with,

  675. they have a

  676. problem in

  677. their culture

  678. right now with

  679. those texts

  680. and in the

  681. past.

  682. You see, in

  683. our progressive

  684. individualistic

  685. Western society,

  686. what the Bible

  687. says about

  688. sex is like

  689. such a

  690. problem.

  691. But what it

  692. says about

  693. forgiveness,

  694. that's pretty

  695. good.

  696. Love each

  697. other.

  698. Go to the

  699. Middle East

  700. today and

  701. what the Bible

  702. says about

  703. sex is pretty

  704. good, probably

  705. not strict enough

  706. but pretty

  707. good.

  708. What it

  709. says about

  710. forgiveness,

  711. that's a

  712. problem.

  713. That's a

  714. problem in

  715. a shame and

  716. honour culture

  717. and particularly

  718. a shame

  719. culture.

  720. That's a

  721. problem.

  722. If we are

  723. offended by

  724. something in

  725. the Bible,

  726. I'd want to

  727. ask, why

  728. should your

  729. cultural

  730. sensibilities

  731. trump everyone

  732. else's?

  733. it's a

  734. little bit

  735. arrogant?

  736. Could even

  737. say it's a

  738. little bit

  739. racist.

  740. Why get

  741. rid of the

  742. Bible because

  743. it offends my

  744. culture at

  745. certain points?

  746. After all,

  747. for the

  748. liberal

  749. progressives

  750. amongst us,

  751. the young

  752. ones who

  753. sit over

  754. the authority

  755. of the

  756. Bible,

  757. the old

  758. ones who

  759. sit over

  760. the authority

  761. of the

  762. Bible in

  763. this moment,

  764. just a

  765. little bit

  766. of a tip.

  767. Your

  768. grandchildren

  769. and great

  770. grandchildren

  771. are going

  772. to find a

  773. lot of

  774. what you

  775. think today

  776. is very

  777. embarrassing.

  778. They're going

  779. to think

  780. exactly the

  781. same of

  782. you.

  783. Your

  784. cultural

  785. progressiveness

  786. is going

  787. to be seen

  788. as conservative

  789. and traditional.

  790. in about

  791. 50 years.

  792. Of course,

  793. you don't

  794. know which

  795. bits,

  796. but it

  797. will be

  798. true.

  799. Don't

  800. miss out

  801. on all

  802. the Bible

  803. and the

  804. Christian

  805. faith has

  806. to offer

  807. just because

  808. you won't

  809. let go

  810. of some

  811. cultural

  812. truth

  813. that in

  814. 50 years

  815. will be

  816. considered

  817. a joke.

  818. If the

  819. Bible really

  820. is God

  821. revealing

  822. himself to

  823. creation

  824. and it's

  825. not the

  826. product of

  827. any specific

  828. culture as

  829. I have said

  830. multiple times

  831. over the last

  832. five to ten

  833. years,

  834. wouldn't it

  835. therefore

  836. contradict

  837. every culture

  838. at some

  839. point

  840. and even

  841. have to

  842. offend

  843. every culture

  844. at some

  845. point?

  846. So if

  847. you read

  848. it and

  849. find some

  850. things

  851. beautiful

  852. and other

  853. things

  854. offensive,

  855. then it's

  856. probably

  857. true

  858. and from

  859. God.

  860. Lastly,

  861. it's

  862. personally

  863. reliable.

  864. A

  865. completely

  866. authoritative

  867. Bible is

  868. the prerequisite

  869. for a

  870. warm

  871. personal

  872. relationship

  873. with God.

  874. It is

  875. not the

  876. enemy

  877. of a

  878. warm

  879. personal

  880. relationship

  881. with God.

  882. As I

  883. said last

  884. week,

  885. in fact,

  886. you cannot

  887. have a

  888. relationship

  889. with God

  890. without

  891. his

  892. word.

  893. It's

  894. like for

  895. you who

  896. are Christian

  897. and you

  898. are not

  899. regularly in

  900. your word,

  901. it's like a

  902. wedding day

  903. where you

  904. make promises

  905. and don't

  906. communicate

  907. with your

  908. spouse from

  909. then on

  910. in.

  911. have a

  912. look at

  913. Luke 24

  914. 32

  915. where the

  916. disciples

  917. reflect back

  918. on their

  919. journey along

  920. the road to

  921. Emmaus.

  922. Were not

  923. our hearts

  924. burning within

  925. us while

  926. he talked

  927. with us on

  928. the road and

  929. opened the

  930. scriptures to

  931. us?

  932. In the

  933. Bible,

  934. the heart

  935. is the

  936. centre of

  937. the whole

  938. person.

  939. It's not

  940. just the

  941. seat of

  942. the emotions.

  943. Hearts

  944. burning here

  945. in Luke

  946. 24 means

  947. a full

  948. life-changing

  949. personal

  950. encounter with

  951. God.

  952. And they

  953. experienced

  954. something here

  955. in this

  956. moment that

  957. they have

  958. never

  959. experienced

  960. before.

  961. And when

  962. did they

  963. experience

  964. it?

  965. When he

  966. opened the

  967. scriptures to

  968. us.

  969. when the

  970. Bible,

  971. its meaning

  972. was properly

  973. open to

  974. them,

  975. when they

  976. understood

  977. what it

  978. meant,

  979. that is

  980. the way

  981. into this

  982. deep

  983. relationship.

  984. And notice

  985. how it

  986. happens.

  987. Verses

  988. 20-21,

  989. they say

  990. Jesus died,

  991. but we had

  992. hoped that

  993. he would be

  994. the one who

  995. would save

  996. us.

  997. And Jesus

  998. calls them

  999. out for

  1000. being foolish

  1001. and slow

  1002. to believe

  1003. the Bible.

  1004. way to

  1005. win friends

  1006. and influence

  1007. people.

  1008. Why did

  1009. they

  1010. misunderstand?

  1011. Verse 27,

  1012. beginning with

  1013. Moses and

  1014. all the

  1015. prophets,

  1016. in other

  1017. words,

  1018. Old

  1019. Testament,

  1020. he explained

  1021. to them

  1022. what was

  1023. said in

  1024. all the

  1025. scriptures

  1026. concerning

  1027. himself.

  1028. He is

  1029. saying that

  1030. every single

  1031. thing in the

  1032. Bible is

  1033. about him.

  1034. Too many

  1035. people have

  1036. walked away

  1037. from the

  1038. Christian

  1039. faith and

  1040. the Bible

  1041. because they

  1042. have misunderstood

  1043. that central

  1044. point in

  1045. verse 27.

  1046. It's all

  1047. about Jesus.

  1048. If we think

  1049. the Bible is

  1050. somehow about

  1051. us and

  1052. what we

  1053. must do

  1054. and how

  1055. we must

  1056. live,

  1057. then we

  1058. don't need

  1059. it as a

  1060. saviour who

  1061. will die

  1062. for us.

  1063. all we

  1064. need is

  1065. simple rules

  1066. and a

  1067. code of

  1068. conduct

  1069. and therefore

  1070. in the

  1071. modern times

  1072. it is

  1073. regressive.

  1074. There are

  1075. only two

  1076. ways to

  1077. read the

  1078. Bible.

  1079. Read it

  1080. as if it

  1081. was all

  1082. about us

  1083. and what

  1084. we must

  1085. do or

  1086. we can

  1087. read every

  1088. part of

  1089. it as

  1090. if it

  1091. is about

  1092. him.

  1093. It is

  1094. about

  1095. Jesus

  1096. and what

  1097. he has

  1098. done.

  1099. And if

  1100. you're in

  1101. a community

  1102. group right

  1103. now,

  1104. you're

  1105. working

  1106. through that

  1107. process of

  1108. understanding

  1109. how the

  1110. whole Bible

  1111. is connected

  1112. to Jesus.

  1113. If you're

  1114. not in a

  1115. community

  1116. group,

  1117. jump into

  1118. that space

  1119. and have

  1120. your eyes

  1121. opened.

  1122. The whole

  1123. Bible points

  1124. to Jesus

  1125. and explains

  1126. Jesus and

  1127. everything is

  1128. achieved for

  1129. us in

  1130. dying in

  1131. our place

  1132. for our

  1133. sin.

  1134. The

  1135. exodus from

  1136. slavery in

  1137. Egypt,

  1138. where Jesus

  1139. started with

  1140. these guys

  1141. on the road

  1142. to Emmaus,

  1143. the sacrificial

  1144. lamb and

  1145. the passing

  1146. over of

  1147. God's

  1148. judgment is

  1149. all about

  1150. Jesus.

  1151. When the

  1152. Bible is

  1153. all about

  1154. Jesus and

  1155. what he's

  1156. achieved for

  1157. us out of

  1158. his love

  1159. for us,

  1160. that's when

  1161. the Bible

  1162. gets personal.

  1163. That's when

  1164. it becomes

  1165. an encounter

  1166. with him,

  1167. a deep

  1168. relationship

  1169. with him.

  1170. And so

  1171. my conviction

  1172. from both

  1173. experience and

  1174. the teaching

  1175. of the

  1176. Bible itself

  1177. is that the

  1178. most effective

  1179. means for

  1180. bolstering

  1181. confidence in

  1182. the Bible is

  1183. not so much

  1184. what I'm doing

  1185. right now and

  1186. did last week,

  1187. building arguments

  1188. about the

  1189. authority and

  1190. the truthfulness

  1191. of the Bible,

  1192. but in fact

  1193. to spend time

  1194. in the Bible,

  1195. reading the

  1196. Bible with

  1197. Jesus at

  1198. the centre.

  1199. Put it like

  1200. this,

  1201. I could tell

  1202. you right

  1203. now that

  1204. honey is a

  1205. substance made

  1206. from several

  1207. bee species.

  1208. Bees produce

  1209. honey by

  1210. gathering and

  1211. then refining

  1212. the sugary

  1213. secretments of

  1214. plants or

  1215. secretments of

  1216. other insects.

  1217. this refinement

  1218. takes place

  1219. within the

  1220. individual bees

  1221. through regurgitation

  1222. and enzymic

  1223. activity.

  1224. And honey

  1225. is sweet

  1226. because of

  1227. its high

  1228. concentrations

  1229. of simple

  1230. sugars like

  1231. fructose and

  1232. glucose.

  1233. In fact,

  1234. it has the

  1235. same relative

  1236. sweetness as

  1237. white sugar.

  1238. One standard

  1239. teaspoon of

  1240. honey provides

  1241. over 190

  1242. kilojoules of

  1243. food energy.

  1244. It is a

  1245. remarkable,

  1246. remarkable

  1247. sweet bit

  1248. of food.

  1249. And I

  1250. could tell you

  1251. that.

  1252. It's all

  1253. true,

  1254. but the best

  1255. thing I could

  1256. do for you is

  1257. not tell you

  1258. about the

  1259. sweetness of

  1260. honey,

  1261. honey,

  1262. but to

  1263. get some

  1264. and to

  1265. put it

  1266. on a

  1267. spoon

  1268. and taste

  1269. it.

  1270. And of

  1271. course,

  1272. then do

  1273. something with

  1274. your insulin

  1275. pump.

  1276. I'll do

  1277. that in a

  1278. moment.

  1279. Make some

  1280. adjustments for

  1281. that.

  1282. In other

  1283. words,

  1284. if you

  1285. don't get

  1286. it then,

  1287. I could sit

  1288. here and do

  1289. a lecture

  1290. about the

  1291. sweetness of

  1292. honey,

  1293. and you

  1294. can walk

  1295. away with a

  1296. bunch of

  1297. facts.

  1298. Reliable

  1299. facts.

  1300. But what

  1301. you need to

  1302. do to

  1303. really get

  1304. the facts,

  1305. you need to

  1306. stick it on

  1307. a spoon,

  1308. you need to

  1309. taste it.

  1310. Taste that

  1311. it is,

  1312. in fact,

  1313. good.

  1314. And if at

  1315. that point,

  1316. that is,

  1317. you don't get

  1318. it until you

  1319. taste it,

  1320. and if you

  1321. don't get it

  1322. once you've

  1323. tasted it,

  1324. there's

  1325. nothing more

  1326. I can do

  1327. for you.

  1328. there's

  1329. nothing more

  1330. I can do

  1331. for you.

  1332. And so,

  1333. as King

  1334. David invited

  1335. others to

  1336. join him

  1337. in Psalm

    Psalms 34:8

  1338. 34,

  1339. verse 8,

  1340. so I

  1341. invite you

  1342. to taste

  1343. and see

  1344. that the

  1345. Lord is

  1346. good.

  1347. God

  1348. promises to

  1349. bless the

  1350. reading and

  1351. teaching of

  1352. his word.

  1353. The word

  1354. of God

  1355. itself is

  1356. more than

  1357. enough to

  1358. accomplish the

  1359. work of

  1360. God in

  1361. the people

  1362. of God.

  1363. God

  1364. and there

  1365. is no

  1366. better way

  1367. to understand

  1368. and come

  1369. to embrace

  1370. the truth

  1371. and the

  1372. authority

  1373. and the

  1374. goodness

  1375. and the

  1376. rightness

  1377. of scripture

  1378. than in

  1379. fact to

  1380. open it

  1381. up

  1382. and let

  1383. it out

  1384. in your

  1385. life.

  1386. And as

  1387. you do,

  1388. as you

  1389. do,

  1390. pray,

  1391. Lord,
