  1. My name's Steve, I haven't met you before.

  2. Senior pastor here is St Paul's, and if you've just joined in,

  3. we are now partway through a series looking at the Bible,

  4. and with the hope that we would grow in confidence

  5. that what we have in front of us is God's Word,

  6. because we want confidence not just so much in God's Word,

  7. but we certainly want confidence in the God of His Word.

  8. So we've looked at God's Word as truth in its entirety,

  9. we've looked at why we should be able to take it seriously,

  10. historically, and now we just started last week

  11. in looking at some of the attributes of the Bible,

  12. such as God's Word is enough, the sufficiency of Scripture,

  13. and today we're looking at the necessity of the Bible.

  14. So keep your books, Bibles open, sorry, at Psalm 19.

  15. In his book, Reflections on the Psalm, C.S. Lewis declares

  16. that Psalm 19 is the greatest poem in the Psalter.

  17. And one of the greatest lyrics in the world.

  18. And so that puts a little bit of pressure on me this morning.

  19. Thank you for that, C.S.

  20. But Psalm, I would agree, Psalm 19 is a phenomenal psalm.

  21. It's all about how God communicates to us.

  22. And this psalm breaks up beautifully, for my sake, into three parts.

  23. It tells us about the silent Word of God,

  24. the perfect and powerful Word of God,

  25. and finally, the necessity of the Word of God.

  26. That's the three steps we're taking this morning.

  27. So the first six verses in the silent Word of God

  28. are all about communication.

  29. They refer to declaring, proclaiming, speech,

  30. revealing knowledge about God and His glory.

  31. This speech is coming from the natural world.

  32. It's from the heavens, the moon, the stars,

  33. the oceans, the mountains, the valleys, that sort of thing.

  34. The paradox of this speech in verse 3,

  35. which says,

  36. they have no speech,

  37. they use no words,

  38. no sound is heard from them.

  39. And yet, verse 4,

  40. their voice goes out into all the earth,

  41. the words to the ends of the world.

  42. That's the paradox in verses 3 and 4.

  43. There is no sound,

  44. and yet there isn't a place in all creation

  45. where the knowledge of God isn't loudly heard,

  46. clearly heard.

  47. This paradox is simply a poetic way

  48. of describing non-verbal communication.

  49. There is such a thing as speechless speech.

  50. As wordless words.

  51. That is, we can communicate through gestures,

  52. we can communicate through facial expressions.

  53. The natural world,

  54. is what it's saying here,

  55. is sending us

  56. non-verbal information about God.

  57. Psalm 19 is an answer

  58. to a whole set of questions,

  59. if you like.

  60. Questions like,

  61. why is it when we gaze at the ocean,

  62. or see a sunset,

  63. or an eagle soaring,

  64. or stand before a mountain peak

  65. that's capped with snow,

  66. or stand on the precipice of a huge gorge,

  67. or lay on our back in the darkness

  68. out in the country,

  69. can't do this in Chatswood,

  70. and you look up

  71. and you see the galaxies before you,

  72. why do these things

  73. captivate us?

  74. Move us.

  75. Fill us with a sense of

  76. joy,

  77. or wonder,

  78. or grandeur,

  79. or

  80. the wow factor.

  81. Why does it do that?

  82. The answer of the Bible

  83. is nature affects us

  84. like

  85. great art,

  86. or a

  87. blockbuster movie,

  88. or a great piece of architecture,

  89. or well-written music,

  90. because that is what

  91. the created order is.

  92. It's a masterpiece.

  93. It's a masterpiece.

  94. It is the work of God's hands.

  95. Everything in nature

  96. is declaring to us

  97. that we are not an accident,

  98. that we are a product

  99. of an artistic vision.

  100. We're the product of design.

  101. We're the product of passion,

  102. of imagination,

  103. of purpose,

  104. of intentionality,

  105. of the greatest artist

  106. and designer

  107. that this world

  108. has ever

  109. or will ever know.

  110. And even if

  111. our life

  112. is a entire

  113. mess,

  114. or even if

  115. we don't believe

  116. in God

  117. at all,

  118. you still can't help

  119. to be captivated

  120. by the natural world.

  121. No matter

  122. our belief system,

  123. we can't stop

  124. the natural

  125. order

  126. speaking to us.

  127. we are not an accident.

  128. Verse 4 tells us

  129. that at some level

  130. everyone is hearing

  131. this message

  132. in the world.

  133. As John Calvin

  134. puts it

  135. in his commentary

  136. on the Psalms,

  137. there is certainly

  138. nothing

  139. so obscure

  140. or contemptible

  141. even in the

  142. smallest

  143. corners

  144. of the earth

  145. in which

  146. some marks

  147. of the power

  148. and the wisdom

  149. of God

  150. may not be seen.

  151. There is no

  152. language

  153. nor speech

  154. where their voice

  155. is not heard.

  156. Frankly,

  157. I don't know

  158. of another

  159. view of reality

  160. that gives

  161. us

  162. a higher view

  163. of the natural

  164. world

  165. than Christianity.

  166. Eastern religions

  167. and philosophies

  168. basically see

  169. the natural world

  170. as an illusion.

  171. The Western

  172. secular world

  173. sees the natural

  174. world

  175. as a random

  176. accident.

  177. What other

  178. view of reality

  179. gives us

  180. more reverence

  181. for the world

  182. and for others

  183. than biblical

  184. Christianity?

  185. Now,

  186. as good

  187. as all

  188. this is,

  189. Psalm 19

  190. cannot end

  191. at verse 6.

  192. nature

  193. by itself

  194. is not

  195. enough.

  196. Nature

  197. doesn't tell

  198. us enough

  199. about God.

  200. It doesn't

  201. give us

  202. everything we

  203. need to

  204. know.

  205. As great

  206. as nature

  207. is in

  208. terms of

  209. revealing

  210. a divine

  211. designer,

  212. that

  213. information,

  214. that revelation,

  215. if you like,

  216. is mixed.

  217. It is unclear

  218. and non-verbal

  219. communication

  220. is always

  221. like that.

  222. You cannot

  223. communicate

  224. specifics

  225. non-verbally.

  226. You cannot

  227. say,

  228. I'll meet you

  229. at dinner

  230. at 6 o'clock

  231. tonight down

  232. at the Bavarian

  233. Beer Cafe

  234. in Chatswood

  235. and it's on

  236. this street.

  237. You can't

  238. communicate

  239. that non-verbally.

  240. You need

  241. specifics.

  242. You need

  243. words.

  244. Non-verbal

  245. communication

  246. is always

  247. mixed.

  248. Falling to

  249. sleep during

  250. the middle

  251. of a sermon

  252. is a form

  253. of non-verbal

  254. communication.

  255. But it's

  256. mixed

  257. communication.

  258. You may

  259. be entirely

  260. bored or

  261. you may

  262. have sleep

  263. apnea.

  264. It's still

  265. non-verbal

  266. even if

  267. you're

  268. snoring,

  269. by the

  270. way.

  271. It's a

  272. result of

  273. many things.

  274. So does

  275. nature really

  276. point to a

  277. designer and

  278. a creative

  279. God?

  280. Yes.

  281. But there

  282. are mixed

  283. messages because

  284. in this same

  285. created order we

  286. have natural

  287. disasters.

  288. We have all

  289. sorts of

  290. disease and

  291. decay.

  292. And Romans

  293. 1 tells us

  294. it is so

  295. easy to

  296. misinterpret

  297. and repress

  298. what nature

  299. is telling

  300. us.

  301. We need

  302. something more

  303. than God's

  304. silent word.

  305. We need

  306. his perfect

  307. and powerful

  308. word.

  309. God.

  310. The doctrine

  311. of the

  312. necessity of

  313. scripture

  314. reminds us

  315. of our

  316. predicament.

  317. The God

  318. who we

  319. need to

  320. know the

  321. most cannot

  322. be discovered

  323. on our

  324. own.

  325. It also

  326. assures us

  327. that the

  328. solution to

  329. our predicament

  330. is in fact

  331. to create a

  332. God who

  333. has made

  334. himself known

  335. through his

  336. word.

  337. So as

  338. the

  339. Westminster

  340. Confession

  341. of Faith

  342. puts it,

  343. although the

  344. light of

  345. nature and

  346. the works

  347. of creation

  348. and providence

  349. do so far

  350. manifest the

  351. goodness,

  352. wisdom and

  353. power of

  354. God as

  355. to leave

  356. humanity

  357. inexcusable,

  358. yet are

  359. they not

  360. sufficient to

  361. give that

  362. knowledge of

  363. God and

  364. his will

  365. which is

  366. necessary for

  367. salvation.

  368. The

  369. Westminster

  370. Confession

  371. goes on to

  372. say,

  373. the Bible

  374. is most

  375. necessary.

  376. Or to

  377. use a

  378. phrase again

  379. of John

  380. Calvin's,

  381. the Bible

  382. are the

  383. spectacles

  384. through which

  385. we see

  386. God,

  387. we see

  388. the world

  389. and we

  390. see

  391. ourselves.

  392. That's

  393. Institutes

  394. Book 1

  395. chapter 6

  396. in case you

  397. want to

  398. look that

  399. one up.

  400. We cannot

  401. truly know

  402. God,

  403. his will

  404. or the

  405. way of

  406. salvation

  407. apart from

  408. the Bible

  409. and we

  410. see this

  411. in Psalm

  412. 19.

  413. In verses

  414. 7 to

  415. 12,

  416. King David,

  417. the author

  418. of this

  419. psalm,

  420. introduces

  421. us to

  422. the perfect

  423. word.

  424. This is

  425. the perfect

  426. necessary

  427. word of

  428. God.

  429. The

  430. perfect

  431. necessary

  432. particular

  433. specific

  434. communication

  435. to God,

  436. from God

  437. to humanity

  438. comes to

  439. us through

  440. the

  441. scriptures,

  442. the

  443. Christian

  444. Bible.

  445. Notice

  446. again the

  447. emphasis in

  448. these verses

  449. on words,

  450. laws,

  451. statutes,

  452. precepts,

  453. commands,

  454. decrees,

  455. they are all

  456. different ways

  457. to express

  458. the same

  459. reality and

  460. that is

  461. the entire

  462. word of

  463. God,

  464. the scriptures.

  465. They're not

  466. referring to

  467. different parts

  468. of the Bible,

  469. they are all

  470. different ways

  471. of referring to

  472. the Bible.

  473. people.

  474. And these

  475. verses tell us

  476. two things

  477. about the

  478. Bible.

  479. Firstly,

  480. the perfection

  481. of the

  482. Bible.

  483. See the

  484. words that

  485. are used

  486. to describe

  487. the Bible

  488. in the

  489. perfect,

  490. trustworthy,

  491. right,

  492. radiant,

  493. firm,

  494. precious,

  495. sweet.

  496. They are

  497. very good

  498. and they

  499. are very

  500. strong words.

  501. Take,

  502. for instance,

  503. the word

  504. right in

  505. verse

  506. eight.

  507. It's a

  508. really

  509. important

  510. word because

  511. it literally

  512. means the

  513. straight edge.

  514. It's a

  515. straight edge

  516. by which

  517. all other

  518. things are

  519. measured.

  520. God's

  521. word is the

  522. straight edge

  523. by which

  524. all other

  525. words are

  526. measured.

  527. We cannot

  528. determine

  529. whether

  530. scripture is

  531. true or

  532. right by

  533. any other

  534. standard.

  535. All other

  536. standards are

  537. judged by

  538. the scriptures

  539. themselves.

  540. Take also

  541. verse nine.

  542. where it

  543. says the

  544. decrees of

  545. the Lord

  546. are firm

  547. and all

  548. of them

  549. are righteous.

  550. The word

  551. firm there

  552. means sure

  553. and certain,

  554. bedrock,

  555. foundational.

  556. This verse

  557. is saying

  558. that every

  559. single

  560. part of

  561. scripture

  562. is equally

  563. sure,

  564. equally

  565. certain,

  566. equally

  567. trustworthy,

  568. equally

  569. right,

  570. equally

  571. perfect.

  572. All of

  573. it.

  574. The

  575. perfectionist

  576. scripture

  577. scripture is

  578. stated in

  579. the most

  580. remarkable

  581. way in

  582. this psalm.

  583. But the

  584. second thing

  585. we notice

  586. is the

  587. power of

  588. the Bible

  589. in these

  590. verses.

  591. I get this

  592. from the

  593. second line

  594. of each

  595. of the

  596. poetic

  597. statements.

  598. So for

  599. instance,

  600. verse seven,

  601. the Bible

  602. has the

  603. power to

  604. refresh the

  605. soul.

  606. I'm just

  607. going to pick

  608. up three of

  609. them.

  610. has the

  611. power to

  612. refresh the

  613. soul.

  614. The word

  615. soul there

  616. in verse

  617. seven,

  618. the original

  619. word is

  620. the word

  621. psych.

  622. The best

  623. way to

  624. translate

  625. this is

  626. that the

  627. Bible has

  628. the power

  629. to show

  630. you who

  631. you are,

  632. who you

  633. really are.

  634. It has the

  635. power to

  636. restore who

  637. you are,

  638. to restore

  639. your true

  640. identity.

  641. Of course,

  642. this means

  643. that there

  644. is something

  645. desperately

  646. wrong with

  647. our

  648. identities.

  649. We are

  650. out of

  651. touch with

  652. who we

  653. are,

  654. who we

  655. really are.

  656. It's an

  657. amazing

  658. claim.

  659. It's saying

  660. only the

  661. Bible can

  662. do that

  663. because when

  664. David writes

  665. in verse

  666. seven,

  667. the law

  668. of the

  669. Lord is

  670. perfect,

  671. refreshing

  672. the soul,

  673. he is in

  674. this moment

  675. contrasting the

  676. scriptures

  677. scriptures

  678. with

  679. nature.

  680. The

  681. Bible and

  682. the Bible

  683. alone can

  684. show you

  685. and make

  686. you who

  687. you are

  688. meant to

  689. be.

  690. Nature

  691. cannot do

  692. that in

  693. itself.

  694. Even

  695. though when

  696. we're all

  697. out of

  698. sorts,

  699. nature is

  700. often the

  701. first place

  702. we escape

  703. to.

  704. please do

  705. that.

  706. I mean,

  707. it's a

  708. great thing

  709. to do,

  710. but take

  711. your Bible

  712. with you.

  713. The

  714. Bible shows

  715. us just

  716. how much

  717. we are

  718. broken,

  719. how sinful

  720. we are,

  721. how flawed,

  722. even more

  723. flawed than

  724. we're prepared

  725. to acknowledge,

  726. but also at

  727. the same

  728. time,

  729. how valued

  730. and affirmed

  731. and forgiven

  732. and accepted

  733. and loved

  734. we are,

  735. more than

  736. we'd ever

  737. possibly imagine

  738. or dream.

  739. We are

  740. far worse

  741. and far

  742. better than

  743. we ever

  744. imagined,

  745. and the

  746. Bible shows

  747. us who

  748. we truly

  749. are.

  750. The

  751. Bible has

  752. the power

  753. to refresh

  754. the soul,

  755. but it

  756. also has

  757. the power,

  758. verse 7

  759. again,

  760. to make

  761. wise the

  762. simple.

  763. It has

  764. the power

  765. to make

  766. us wise

  767. so that

  768. we are

  769. able to

  770. navigate

  771. God's

  772. world

  773. well.

  774. One of

  775. my favourite

  776. quotes from

  777. American

  778. humorist and

  779. author Mark

  780. Twain,

  781. in fact it's

  782. probably the

  783. only quote

  784. really,

  785. I should have

  786. clarified that,

  787. the only one

  788. that I can

  789. remember,

  790. and it's

  791. therefore my

  792. favourite one,

  793. is the one

  794. where he says

  795. he's reflecting

  796. on his life,

  797. later in life

  798. reflects on his

  799. life and he

  800. made this

  801. claim,

  802. he said,

  803. when I was

  804. 16,

  805. he said,

  806. I could not

  807. believe how

  808. ignorant my

  809. father was

  810. about the

  811. ways of the

  812. world.

  813. he said,

  814. when I

  815. turned 25,

  816. I was

  817. astounded by

  818. how much

  819. he'd grown

  820. up.

  821. Every

  822. growing,

  823. developing,

  824. maturing

  825. person I

  826. know is

  827. able to

  828. look back

  829. on their

  830. life 15

  831. years ago

  832. and see

  833. how foolish

  834. they were

  835. back then.

  836. Now it's

  837. pretty obvious

  838. when you

  839. compare your

  840. 10-year-old

  841. self with

  842. your 25-year-old

  843. self.

  844. You look

  845. back on your

  846. 10-year-old

  847. self and

  848. you go,

  849. I knew

  850. nothing.

  851. But it's

  852. also true

  853. when you

  854. compare your

  855. 25-year-old

  856. self with

  857. your 40-year-old

  858. self.

  859. Or in

  860. my case,

  861. my 55-year-old

  862. self,

  863. my 40-year-old

  864. self,

  865. and you

  866. realise,

  867. I didn't

  868. know my

  869. heart as

  870. well then

  871. as I do

  872. now.

  873. I can

  874. think back

  875. of things

  876. in that

  877. time and

  878. I view

  879. them differently.

  880. My

  881. perspective

  882. has changed.

  883. My heart

  884. and my

  885. emotions have

  886. shifted.

  887. In that

  888. time.

  889. How much

  890. has changed

  891. in 15

  892. years?

  893. I was

  894. simple then.

  895. I'm wiser

  896. on those

  897. things now.

  898. Of course,

  899. you realise

  900. the implications

  901. of this,

  902. don't you?

  903. So,

  904. our current

  905. selves are

  906. going to

  907. look simple

  908. and foolish

  909. to our

  910. 15 years

  911. from now

  912. selves,

  913. which means

  914. you're

  915. foolish now.

  916. It means

  917. you're

  918. simple now.

  919. Well,

  920. me too.

  921. I mean,

  922. I'm throwing

  923. myself in

  924. that one

  925. as well.

  926. It's not

  927. an accusation.

  928. I'm throwing

  929. myself in

  930. that one

  931. as well.

  932. So,

  933. what do we

  934. do with

  935. that,

  936. with the

  937. acknowledgement

  938. that God's

  939. word is

  940. telling me

  941. that I'm

  942. simple and

  943. foolish now?

  944. Verse 11,

  945. by them,

  946. talking about

  947. his word,

  948. your servant

  949. is warned

  950. in keeping

  951. them,

  952. there is

  953. great reward.

  954. The Bible

  955. warns us

  956. against the

  957. foolishness

  958. of life

  959. now,

  960. to get

  961. wise now.

  962. It makes

  963. wise the

  964. simple

  965. now.

  966. Third one,

  967. the Bible

  968. also has

  969. power to

  970. delight our

  971. hearts.

  972. Verse 8,

  973. the precepts

  974. of the Lord

  975. are right,

  976. giving joy

  977. to the heart.

  978. Verse 10

  979. expands on

  980. that joy.

  981. They are

  982. more precious

  983. than gold,

  984. than much

  985. pure gold.

  986. They are

  987. sweeter than

  988. honey,

  989. than honey

  990. from the

  991. honeycomb.

  992. What is

  993. interesting

  994. about this

  995. is that

  996. we would

  997. normally,

  998. for the

  999. Christian person,

  1000. we would

  1001. normally

  1002. associate

  1003. the sweet

  1004. words of

  1005. God,

  1006. attach them

  1007. to his

  1008. promises,

  1009. his mercy

  1010. and his

  1011. grace.

  1012. We would

  1013. not normally

  1014. attach the

  1015. sweetness of

  1016. God's

  1017. word to

  1018. his law

  1019. and his

  1020. commands.

  1021. We would

  1022. not normally

  1023. do that.

  1024. We put up

  1025. with the

  1026. laws and

  1027. the commands

  1028. because of

  1029. the sweetness

  1030. of your

  1031. character.

  1032. That's how

  1033. we would

  1034. normally

  1035. respond.

  1036. Verse 1

  1037. says a

  1038. similar thing

  1039. as this,

  1040. blessed is

  1041. the one

  1042. whose delight

  1043. is in the

  1044. law of

  1045. the Lord,

  1046. who meditates

  1047. on his

  1048. law day

  1049. and night.

  1050. commands.

  1051. You see,

  1052. left to

  1053. our own

  1054. devices,

  1055. we don't

  1056. know how

  1057. to obey

  1058. commands

  1059. except through

  1060. some kind

  1061. of coercion.

  1062. How do

  1063. we get to

  1064. the point

  1065. where we

  1066. delight in

  1067. God's

  1068. commands in

  1069. such a way

  1070. they are

  1071. sweet,

  1072. they are

  1073. good,

  1074. they are

  1075. majestic,

  1076. they are

  1077. beautiful,

  1078. they are

  1079. joyful?

  1080. How do

  1081. we get to

  1082. that point?

  1083. that requires

  1084. a complete

  1085. reset of

  1086. the driving

  1087. motivations of

  1088. our lives.

  1089. How do

  1090. we get to

  1091. this entire

  1092. reformed

  1093. identity

  1094. where the

  1095. simple are

  1096. made wise

  1097. and the

  1098. reset of

  1099. the inner

  1100. drive of

  1101. our lives?

  1102. How does

  1103. that come

  1104. about?

  1105. This is

  1106. where we

  1107. turn to

  1108. the last

  1109. section of

  1110. Psalm 19

  1111. and my

  1112. last point.

  1113. Reading from

  1114. verse 12.

  1115. But who

  1116. can discern

  1117. their own

  1118. errors?

  1119. Forgive my

  1120. hidden faults.

  1121. Keep your

  1122. servant also

  1123. from willful

  1124. sins.

  1125. May they

  1126. not rule

  1127. over me.

  1128. Then I

  1129. will be

  1130. blameless,

  1131. innocent of

  1132. great

  1133. transgression.

  1134. May these

  1135. words of

  1136. my mouth

  1137. and this

  1138. meditation of

  1139. my heart

  1140. be pleasing

  1141. in your

  1142. sight.

  1143. Lord my

  1144. rock and

  1145. my

  1146. redeemer.

  1147. Now,

  1148. there's a

  1149. contradiction

  1150. in these

  1151. verses.

  1152. An apparent

  1153. contradiction

  1154. to these

  1155. verses.

  1156. David starts

  1157. with who

  1158. can discern

  1159. their own

  1160. errors.

  1161. It's a

  1162. rhetorical

  1163. question where

  1164. you're meant

  1165. to come up

  1166. with the

  1167. conclusion of

  1168. well actually

  1169. no one

  1170. can.

  1171. No one

  1172. can know

  1173. their own

  1174. errors.

  1175. And then

  1176. he adds

  1177. keep your

  1178. servant

  1179. also from

  1180. willful

  1181. sins.

  1182. May they

  1183. not rule

  1184. over me.

  1185. Then I'll

  1186. be blameless,

  1187. innocent of

  1188. great

  1189. transgression.

  1190. He adds

  1191. there that

  1192. the very

  1193. best he

  1194. can hope

  1195. for is

  1196. that he

  1197. might be

  1198. able to

  1199. at very

  1200. least identify

  1201. the obvious

  1202. sins in

  1203. his life,

  1204. the willful

  1205. sins in

  1206. his life,

  1207. the ones

  1208. that he

  1209. deliberately

  1210. chooses to

  1211. break,

  1212. if you like,

  1213. the laws

  1214. he chooses

  1215. to break.

  1216. And he

  1217. says if I

  1218. can avoid

  1219. those,

  1220. then I'll

  1221. be innocent

  1222. of great

  1223. transgressions.

  1224. He's speaking

  1225. here like a

  1226. moralist.

  1227. If I can

  1228. avoid the

  1229. big things,

  1230. then I'll

  1231. be innocent

  1232. of great

  1233. transgressions,

  1234. the obvious

  1235. ones,

  1236. the deliberate

  1237. singing,

  1238. the stuff

  1239. everyone

  1240. sees.

  1241. But one

  1242. thing he

  1243. says that

  1244. I cannot

  1245. overcome

  1246. the sins

  1247. that are

  1248. deep down

  1249. in my

  1250. heart.

  1251. I can't

  1252. overcome

  1253. those ones.

  1254. I can't

  1255. overcome

  1256. them because

  1257. I can't

  1258. even see

  1259. them.

  1260. It's the

  1261. sin that's

  1262. below the

  1263. sin.

  1264. It's the

  1265. driving force

  1266. that gives

  1267. rise to

  1268. the obvious

  1269. sins and

  1270. the breaking

  1271. of the

  1272. law.

  1273. The pride,

  1274. the self

  1275. justification,

  1276. the defensiveness,

  1277. the greed,

  1278. the resentment,

  1279. the unkindness,

  1280. all the

  1281. stuff that

  1282. is ultimately

  1283. the things

  1284. that are

  1285. keeping us

  1286. awake and

  1287. messing up

  1288. our lives

  1289. are the

  1290. things that

  1291. we cannot

  1292. see.

  1293. Ironically,

  1294. the sin

  1295. that most

  1296. dominates

  1297. us,

  1298. the sin

  1299. that most

  1300. hurts us

  1301. and hurts

  1302. others are

  1303. the ones

  1304. that we

  1305. cannot see

  1306. and therefore

  1307. we justify.

  1308. to quote

  1309. Derek

  1310. Kidner

  1311. on this

  1312. verse,

  1313. the fault

  1314. may be

  1315. hidden

  1316. not because

  1317. it is too

  1318. small to

  1319. see but

  1320. because it

  1321. is too

  1322. characteristic

  1323. to register.

  1324. It is so

  1325. much part of

  1326. our life

  1327. it has become

  1328. acceptable to

  1329. us.

  1330. it has become

  1331. respectable,

  1332. justifiable.

  1333. David goes

  1334. on to say

  1335. in verse

  1336. 14,

  1337. may these

  1338. words of

  1339. my mouth

  1340. and this

  1341. meditation of

  1342. my heart

  1343. be pleasing

  1344. in your

  1345. sight,

  1346. Lord,

  1347. my rock

  1348. and my

  1349. redeemer.

  1350. the word

  1351. pleasing

  1352. here

  1353. is crucial.

  1354. It's a

  1355. word that's

  1356. used

  1357. in every

  1358. instance in

  1359. the Old

  1360. Testament

  1361. referring to

  1362. the sacrificial

  1363. system.

  1364. The aroma

  1365. was pleasing

  1366. to God.

  1367. The sacrifice

  1368. was pleasing

  1369. to God.

  1370. And the

  1371. sacrifice we

  1372. know that

  1373. was pleasing

  1374. to God

  1375. was an

  1376. animal

  1377. without

  1378. blemish.

  1379. And so

  1380. David here

  1381. appears to

  1382. be,

  1383. if you like,

  1384. confidently

  1385. contradicting

  1386. himself.

  1387. How can

  1388. he say,

  1389. may these

  1390. words of

  1391. my mouth

  1392. and this

  1393. meditation

  1394. of my

  1395. heart

  1396. be pleasing

  1397. without

  1398. blemish,

  1399. without

  1400. fault,

  1401. without

  1402. failing,

  1403. in your

  1404. sight,

  1405. when he

  1406. can't even

  1407. see them.

  1408. And he

  1409. can't

  1410. overcome

  1411. them.

  1412. How can

  1413. he say

  1414. that?

  1415. How can

  1416. you say

  1417. that?

  1418. How can

  1419. I say

  1420. that?

  1421. That the

  1422. meditations

  1423. of my

  1424. heart are

  1425. pleasing to

  1426. God when

  1427. I've got

  1428. sin there

  1429. that I

  1430. can't

  1431. even see?

  1432. me?

  1433. The only

  1434. possible

  1435. answer is

  1436. the very

  1437. last words

  1438. of this

  1439. psalm.

  1440. Lord,

  1441. my rock

  1442. and my

  1443. redeemer.

  1444. The reason

  1445. why David

  1446. is so

  1447. confident

  1448. is because

  1449. he knows

  1450. that God

  1451. is his

  1452. redeemer.

  1453. And what

  1454. is, if you

  1455. like, a

  1456. general

  1457. statement for

  1458. David here

  1459. is a much

  1460. more specific

  1461. statement for

  1462. the Christian

  1463. now.

  1464. You see, the

  1465. Bible tells us

  1466. that King

  1467. David was

  1468. the forerunner,

  1469. the shadow

  1470. of a much

  1471. greater king,

  1472. one who

  1473. delighted in

  1474. the law of

  1475. God completely,

  1476. one who was

  1477. completely pure

  1478. of heart,

  1479. sinless

  1480. in perfection.

  1481. the New

  1482. Testament

  1483. declares that

  1484. Jesus himself,

  1485. Jesus Christ,

  1486. is the king

  1487. of kings.

  1488. He is the

  1489. great King

  1490. David.

  1491. And notice

  1492. that at

  1493. every instance,

  1494. Satan and

  1495. others tried

  1496. to divert

  1497. him to

  1498. move into

  1499. sinfulness

  1500. himself.

  1501. Satan comes

  1502. after him.

  1503. And what is

  1504. Jesus'

  1505. response to

  1506. Satan?

  1507. I mean, he

  1508. was already

  1509. out in nature,

  1510. he was out

  1511. in the

  1512. wilderness.

  1513. What was

  1514. his response

  1515. to Satan?

  1516. Have a look

  1517. around at the

  1518. moon and the

  1519. stars to see

  1520. the glory.

  1521. No.

  1522. It is

  1523. written.

  1524. It is

  1525. written.

  1526. It is

  1527. written.

  1528. When the

  1529. religious elite

  1530. came after

  1531. him, it

  1532. is written.

  1533. It is

  1534. written.

  1535. It is

  1536. written.

  1537. In the

  1538. Garden of

  1539. Gethsemane,

  1540. on the way

  1541. to crucifixion,

  1542. the cross

  1543. itself, it

  1544. is written.

  1545. It is

  1546. written.

  1547. It is

  1548. written.

  1549. Scripture

  1550. after

  1551. scripture

  1552. after

  1553. scripture

  1554. after

  1555. scripture,

  1556. in every

  1557. part of

  1558. his life,

  1559. Jesus, you

  1560. cut him and

  1561. he bleeds

  1562. scripture.

  1563. In every

  1564. instance of

  1565. life,

  1566. scripture was

  1567. his response.

  1568. Jesus

  1569. delighted in

  1570. scripture.

  1571. He is the

  1572. only one who

  1573. completely

  1574. delighted in

  1575. scripture.

  1576. He is the

  1577. only one who

  1578. ever kept

  1579. every precept,

  1580. every law,

  1581. every command.

  1582. and he dies

  1583. on the cross

  1584. as our

  1585. substitute

  1586. for our

  1587. disobedience,

  1588. our

  1589. breaking

  1590. of every

  1591. command.

  1592. And by

  1593. his death,

  1594. he has

  1595. redeemed us.

  1596. He's paid

  1597. the price.

  1598. He's brought

  1599. us back into

  1600. God.

  1601. God.

  1602. And so

  1603. when we

  1604. see our

  1605. failure,

  1606. we come

  1607. to him,

  1608. we trust

  1609. in him,

  1610. and his

  1611. great reward

  1612. becomes

  1613. ours.

  1614. His

  1615. fulfillment

  1616. of all

  1617. the law

  1618. becomes

  1619. ours.

  1620. It's the

  1621. great exchange,

  1622. the punishment

  1623. for our

  1624. imperfect

  1625. law keeping

  1626. has gone

  1627. across to

  1628. him and

  1629. the reward

  1630. for his

  1631. perfect record

  1632. transfers to

  1633. us.

  1634. This is

  1635. the gospel.

  1636. this is

  1637. the good

  1638. news of

  1639. Christianity

  1640. and it's

  1641. only this

  1642. that ultimately

  1643. rewires the

  1644. heart.

  1645. It's only

  1646. this that

  1647. gives us a

  1648. firm and

  1649. confident

  1650. identity

  1651. regardless of

  1652. the reality

  1653. of our

  1654. ongoing

  1655. imperfections

  1656. and failures

  1657. and sin.

  1658. Nature,

  1659. the created

  1660. order in

  1661. itself can

  1662. never rewire

  1663. the heart

  1664. like that.

  1665. God's

  1666. solution

  1667. The Bible

  1668. is absolutely

  1669. necessary for

  1670. us to see

  1671. our true

  1672. predicament,

  1673. God's

  1674. solution and

  1675. therefore the

  1676. rewiring of

  1677. our hearts

  1678. in such a

  1679. way that

  1680. God's word

  1681. becomes

  1682. glorious,

  1683. majestic,

  1684. sweet,

  1685. delightful,

  1686. joyful.

  1687. You see,

  1688. the moralistic

  1689. religious person

  1690. seeks to

  1691. obey the

  1692. word of

  1693. God out

  1694. of fear.

  1695. The

  1696. relativistic

  1697. person is

  1698. indifferent to

  1699. the word of

  1700. God.

  1701. The

  1702. Christian

  1703. delights

  1704. in God's

  1705. word

  1706. word

  1707. because

  1708. Jesus,

  1709. the one

  1710. who delights

  1711. in the

  1712. word,

  1713. became a

  1714. curse

  1715. for you

  1716. and for

  1717. me.

  1718. He is

  1719. our

  1720. redeemer

  1721. and because

  1722. he is our

  1723. redeemer,

  1724. he is our

  1725. rock,

  1726. he is our

  1727. refuge,

  1728. he is our

  1729. safe place

  1730. and the

  1731. Bible is

  1732. absolutely

  1733. necessary for

  1734. refreshing the

  1735. soul,

  1736. for making

  1737. wise the

  1738. simple,

  1739. for delighting

  1740. the heart

  1741. because when

  1742. the Christian

  1743. through the

  1744. work of the

  1745. spirit looks

  1746. into the

  1747. Bible,

  1748. they see

  1749. beauty,

  1750. they see

  1751. majesty,

  1752. they see

  1753. glory.

  1754. The Bible

  1755. becomes the

  1756. window through

  1757. which we see

  1758. the beauty

  1759. and the

  1760. majesty and

  1761. the glory

  1762. of everything

  1763. else.

  1764. That's why I

  1765. appreciate a

  1766. David Attenborough

  1767. and some of

  1768. the insights

  1769. he has and

  1770. the little

  1771. crews that

  1772. he has of

  1773. filming the

  1774. intricate

  1775. details.

  1776. And yet I've

  1777. got something

  1778. more than

  1779. him.

  1780. I see

  1781. glory when

  1782. he doesn't

  1783. see glory.

  1784. The Bible

  1785. becomes the

  1786. window through

  1787. which we see

  1788. beauty and

  1789. majesty and

  1790. glory in

  1791. God who

  1792. redeems,

  1793. the God who

  1794. creates and

  1795. recreates.

  1796. glory.

  1797. All of us

  1798. crave glory.

  1799. We're designed

  1800. to crave glory.

  1801. We are

  1802. designed by

  1803. God to

  1804. marvel at

  1805. majesty,

  1806. to have the

  1807. wow factor.

  1808. glory.

  1809. And every

  1810. one of us at

  1811. some point in

  1812. life need to

  1813. go beside

  1814. us, you

  1815. know, the

  1816. sea or

  1817. stare at the

  1818. ocean or to

  1819. look at the

  1820. galaxies or

  1821. whatever it

  1822. might be to

  1823. get that

  1824. awe factor,

  1825. if you like,

  1826. to make us

  1827. feel hopeful,

  1828. to make us,

  1829. give us

  1830. perspective on

  1831. life.

  1832. And yet the

  1833. necessary source

  1834. of the greatest,

  1835. greatest glimpses

  1836. of glory we

  1837. have is

  1838. sitting on our

  1839. bookshelves.
