  1. Good morning and welcome church, welcome online, good to see you.

  2. My name is Nick, I'm the pastor for discipleship here at St. Paul's.

  3. Lovely to see you.

  4. What did we just experience?

  5. Today we're taking our final step in our season called Your Word is Truth.

  6. And if you're new today or you've missed a week or two,

  7. let me catch you up real quick on what we've heard from God's Word in preaching this term.

  8. Joseph, you might want to turn this down.

  9. I do tend to get a little emotional and louder than that.

  10. There we go, caught me just in time.

  11. Here's where we've been.

  12. The Bible is the truth that interprets the world.

  13. We ought to take it seriously.

  14. It needs nothing added to it.

  15. We need it to discover God.

  16. It's how we see God's glory.

  17. It's clear enough for anyone to see God.

  18. For a child and a university professor.

  19. It reveals eternal past to future reality with complete finality.

  20. And all of it, every word of it, in history and promise and song and poem and wisdom and prophecy,

  21. all intertwined with the journeys of real, broken, fallible children, women and men,

  22. is gathered for us to point us toward one person, Jesus,

  23. who was God and is God.

  24. Jesus is the embodiment of the Bible, called the Word himself,

  25. as the only true, worthy, capable, certain, majestic, authentic, climactic, reigning king

  26. over the kingdom of God that has been forever planned through him and established for him.

  27. So it's not just another book, right?

  28. The Bible is all of that.

  29. And it's a completely new experience that you must have.

  30. And you can't get that experience any other way.

  31. Experiencing the Bible as God intends really matters.

  32. Let's pray.

  33. Let's pray.

  34. Lord God, you made the world and all that is in it.

  35. You gave us testimony through the Holy Spirit from witnesses and prophets

  36. who wrote down your works and your words for all people to experience.

  37. Would you help us to see in these words as your spirit carries us along in them?

  38. Help us to see Jesus in Scripture today and light our life by him to guide us on our journey.

  39. Amen.

  40. As a child, my family went on one big holiday to Canada.

  41. I could tell you stories about a bald eagle that flew just over our heads.

  42. It was so big and terrifying.

  43. I felt like cowering, even though it was nowhere near me at the time.

  44. I saw a bear catching a salmon in a river.

  45. I had hot chocolate by a waterfall beside a glacier.

  46. After canoeing across a lake.

  47. A pot of orcas swam along beside our boat.

  48. It was amazing.

  49. And we had a camera with us.

  50. It was one of those old film cameras where you don't ever know if a photo was going to turn out.

  51. You just have the guess of capturing that moment.

  52. But the photos that we caught, even though many of them are very good, they don't tell the whole story of just experiencing the awe and wonder of that place.

  53. Each picture helps tell the story of our trip.

  54. But to truly experience it, you had to be there.

  55. You had to be there.

  56. It's this little phrase that in English that we use to truly experience what happened, you need more than a story.

  57. You need more than a photo.

  58. You'd have to be physically there.

  59. Hearing you had to be there when someone's telling you a story, it's quite isolating.

  60. Often people are using it to say, you weren't there.

  61. The joy or the shock or the gravity of what someone's trying to tell you about that event, it can't be shared in a way that brings us into that experience.

  62. But the Bible is not like that.

  63. As you read its words, even over and over and over again, you experience something that according to 2 Peter is even better than witnessing the history in person.

  64. It's even better than being there.

  65. Because God's speaking these words as we read them.

  66. These words will never leave you empty.

  67. Just fearing that you'd have to be there.

  68. Today's passage is a letter from Peter.

  69. It's his second letter that we have.

  70. And Peter was one of Jesus' closest 12 disciples.

  71. And he wrote this letter to Christians around about 65 AD.

  72. Now, I don't know much about history, but I know that was a really bad guy running Rome at about this time called Emperor Nero.

  73. And he loved killing Christians.

  74. Eyewitnesses to Jesus were being killed and they were dying out.

  75. And in verses 13 to 14, Peter tells us that he fully expected to die soon.

  76. And he would.

  77. He was crucified.

  78. It is said he was hung upside down on a cross for his faith.

  79. And as Peter is writing this, he knows it's going to be his last letter in all likelihood.

  80. It's like his last will in Testament.

  81. So what's in Peter's will?

  82. What does Peter want to communicate to Christians as one last final word?

  83. Is he going to tell a grand story?

  84. Like, ah, you had to be there.

  85. All right, bye.

  86. No, Peter instead is going to explain why we don't need him around.

  87. As we have the scriptures as our eyewitness to the power and majesty of Jesus.

  88. Because in experiencing scripture, we are made to see what Peter saw.

  89. We become eyewitnesses of Jesus ourselves through scripture's words.

  90. Peter is going to explain this to us by, figuratively, he's going to get out one old photo.

  91. One story that his readers would have already heard him tell.

  92. And he's going to say this.

  93. One last time.

  94. Let me just point to this and say, you know what?

  95. This incredible experience that I had is what you'll experience.

  96. And I'm sure of it.

  97. When you open scripture.

  98. So let's see how Peter shares this memory with us.

  99. This little Polaroid from his journey.

  100. Have a look in your Bibles of verse 16.

  101. And if I haven't convinced you or the last few weeks haven't convinced you,

  102. make sure you've got your Bible in your hand in this moment.

  103. Check with me that this is what God says.

  104. Don't just rely on the screen.

  105. I type mistakes all the time.

  106. Verse 16 of 2 Peter chapter 1 says,

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  107. For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,

  108. but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

  109. Peter must have been surrounded by sceptical people challenging his stories about Jesus,

  110. even as he shared them as eyewitness testimony, as his proof.

  111. Peter is said to have been the main source for Mark's gospel,

  112. which is one of the four consistent histories of Jesus that we have gathered from many eyewitnesses here in the Bible.

  113. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

  114. They're not myths.

  115. And as those gospels will attest to, and Mark as well,

  116. Peter is not clever at all.

  117. He almost laughed.

  118. I imagine Peter laughing in that verse that we just read.

  119. At the idea that he would be clever enough to make up everything that he said happened.

  120. How could he make up something so wonderful?

  121. So he one last time testifies to the power and majesty of Jesus.

  122. And Peter shares the testimony of God himself.

  123. So let's have a look at the next verse there.

  124. Verse 17.

  125. If you've ever read the gospels,

  126. you might be aware of the little photo that Peter's pulled out here.

  127. Do you know what memory he's pointing us to?

  128. He wants us to remember a moment,

  129. as if we've already heard it,

  130. because he's already told the people who he's writing to,

  131. about what we now call the transfiguration,

  132. which is recorded in three of the four gospels.

  133. And one is in Mark chapter 9.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  134. So I'm going to actually show you what this photo is.

  135. I'm going to describe this memory to you,

  136. as Peter told it to Mark.

  137. Here's what happened.

  138. Jesus took Peter,

  139. James and John with him and led him up a high mountain where they were all alone.

  140. There he was transfigured before him.

  141. His clothes became dazzling white,

  142. whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.

  143. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses,

  144. who were talking with Jesus.

  145. Then a cloud appeared and covered them.

  146. And a voice came from the cloud.

  147. This is my son,

  148. whom I love.

  149. Listen to him.

  150. Suddenly,

  151. when they looked around,

  152. they no longer saw anyone except Jesus.

  153. The Lord God himself,

  154. and Moses and Elijah,

  155. and Peter,

  156. James and John,

  157. and Jesus together testify that Jesus is God's son,

  158. the Messiah.

  159. So here's why I think Peter shares with us,

  160. and with everyone who reads this,

  161. that one memory.

  162. Jesus was witnessed to by Moses and Elijah.

  163. The Old Testament was summarized in Jewish tradition as the law and the prophets.

  164. The law and the prophets.

  165. The champions,

  166. or the main characters,

  167. or the most memorable characters of those two sections were Moses and Elijah.

  168. And in this moment,

  169. Peter was showing us that their presence on the mountain of transfiguration

  170. confirmed Jesus is the Messiah,

  171. the man those two men had personally written about and hoped for.

  172. And figuratively,

  173. the law and the prophets that they represent,

  174. the whole Old Testament,

  175. is there,

  176. figuratively,

  177. witnessing to Jesus in that moment.

  178. All the fulfillment of the promises of the entire Old Testament,

  179. pointing to Jesus and saying,

  180. listen to him as you've listened to us.

  181. It is their witness,

  182. their original prophetic message,

  183. that has led Peter to share this memory in his last will with us in particular.

  184. So let's have a look at verse 19.

  185. Again,

  186. we also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,

  187. and you will do well to pay attention to it.

  188. It is as if Peter's held up this photo,

  189. this memory,

  190. and he's taken you through it.

  191. He's pointed you one more time,

  192. just last thing,

  193. just remember this thing that happened to me.

  194. And then he says this,

  195. as I put this photo down,

  196. pick your Bible up.

  197. As I leave,

  198. pick up Scripture.

  199. In here is a clearer moment,

  200. a clearer picture

  201. of what I've just described,

  202. what I got to see with my own eyes.

  203. It's clearer in there.

  204. The original language is even stronger,

  205. and I've highlighted it on the screen for you,

  206. because a better translation of verse 19,

  207. which happens to be in the ESV

  208. and some of the other translations,

  209. Peter actually says,

  210. we have something more sure,

  211. the prophetic word.

  212. More sure than even being there,

  213. or hearing from Peter,

  214. is what God does

  215. through the prophetic word.

  216. Now,

  217. Peter here is talking about part of the Old Testament,

  218. talking about the Old Testament Scripture,

  219. when he explains how God worked to create it.

  220. In the past,

  221. God never left people

  222. to create their own interpretation of him,

  223. based on the world around them,

  224. in verse 20.

  225. Have a look there in verse 20,

  226. you might see that there.

  227. Or by their own thought or will,

  228. in verse 21.

  229. But these more sure Scriptures

  230. came directly from God himself.

  231. Peter is connecting God's own testimony

  232. that he heard from heaven about Jesus

  233. with God's words spoken through the pages

  234. of the law and the prophets.

  235. These are one continuous testimony.

  236. God testified through the Old Testament this way.

  237. In verse 21,

  238. Peter says,

  239. prophets, though human,

  240. spoke from God,

  241. as they were carried along

  242. by the Holy Spirit.

  243. I read this week that

  244. we can think

  245. of this like

  246. sailing.

  247. Ever been sailing?

  248. Ever been at the beach

  249. and had the urge to go sail?

  250. Let me try and put you in that place.

  251. Imagine

  252. a calm ocean

  253. beside a small town.

  254. You look out to the ocean

  255. and you see the water surface

  256. darken and shiver,

  257. showing where the wind

  258. is moving.

  259. There's a boat

  260. on the shore

  261. with a mast.

  262. It's begging you

  263. to push it out

  264. into the ocean.

  265. As you

  266. break through the waves

  267. with it,

  268. you see an island

  269. out to sea.

  270. You're kicking a snorkel around

  271. in the bottom of the boat.

  272. And then as you look,

  273. you see dolphins

  274. just turning the corner

  275. around the point

  276. ahead of you

  277. and away

  278. out of sight.

  279. What do you need to do

  280. to experience

  281. sailing in this moment?

  282. Because frankly,

  283. that boat's not going to move you.

  284. Once you get in it,

  285. you're just going to sit there

  286. and it's going to be

  287. a real dull experience.

  288. What do you need?

  289. You need to set a sail.

  290. If you raised a sail

  291. on that mast,

  292. turned it to catch

  293. some breeze,

  294. the boat would move along

  295. against the current

  296. and you'd steer it on

  297. by the strongest wind

  298. and you'd sail

  299. wherever that wind

  300. might send you

  301. and go with it

  302. where you could not go

  303. without it.

  304. Scripture is like sailing.

  305. People wrote

  306. what the wind,

  307. figuratively,

  308. but the wind of the Spirit

  309. gave them.

  310. As they were blown along,

  311. carried by the Holy Spirit,

  312. they yielded their sail,

  313. themselves,

  314. to its direction.

  315. They didn't swim.

  316. They didn't get out there

  317. with their hands

  318. and try and push themselves along.

  319. They yielded to the wind

  320. of the Holy Spirit.

  321. Because they wrote

  322. God's words for us

  323. in this way,

  324. our experience

  325. in reading those same words,

  326. in our experience,

  327. we're blown along

  328. by the same Spirit.

  329. It's like we've caught

  330. the same breeze.

  331. We're carried along

  332. as sailors

  333. towards God's destination

  334. for us

  335. and as we've heard

  336. this season,

  337. all the wind blows

  338. toward Jesus.

  339. Peter is more sure

  340. that God will speak

  341. to readers of Scripture

  342. through the Holy Spirit

  343. than having to be there

  344. to witness Jesus.

  345. Does that make you

  346. think of anyone?

  347. It makes me think

  348. of doubting Thomas.

  349. Does anyone remember Thomas,

  350. the poor guy

  351. who has doubting

  352. forever in front of his name?

  353. He was a disciple

  354. who wasn't there

  355. when Jesus first

  356. appeared to the disciples.

  357. And when they told him

  358. about it,

  359. he didn't believe it.

  360. But when Jesus

  361. did appear to him,

  362. immediately he says,

  363. my Lord

  364. and my God.

  365. Seeing was believing.

  366. Then Jesus says,

  367. because you have seen me,

  368. you have believed.

  369. But blessed are those

  370. who have not seen

  371. and yet have

  372. believed.

  373. Peter is saying this morning,

  374. if you open this,

  375. you get to see.

  376. the blessing of God

  377. is received by those

  378. who open Scripture

  379. and see Jesus revealed.

  380. Lord and God,

  381. powerful and majestic.

  382. Even though we did not

  383. see him like Peter

  384. and Thomas in Scripture,

  385. we really can see.

  386. And Scripture does not stop

  387. with the law

  388. and the prophets.

  389. Peter is not just talking

  390. about an Old Testament

  391. experience.

  392. and here's how I know that.

  393. Peter wrote later

  394. in this letter

  395. in chapter 3.

  396. We were in chapter 3

  397. as a community group

  398. this week

  399. of 2 Peter.

  400. He writes actually there

  401. about Paul's letters.

  402. Because people around

  403. Peter and Paul

  404. both at the time,

  405. they were twisting

  406. their words

  407. to try and prove them

  408. as wrong

  409. or try and prove Jesus

  410. as just another man.

  411. And people were doubting

  412. and twisting Paul's words

  413. as they were doing that.

  414. They were denying Jesus' power

  415. and majesty.

  416. And Peter says something

  417. amazing here.

  418. He says in verse 16

  419. that those who twist

  420. Paul's words

  421. also twist

  422. the other Scriptures.

  423. Did you just catch that?

  424. Peter just equates

  425. the Old Testament,

  426. the Scriptures of God

  427. with Paul's letters.

  428. Even the earliest teaching

  429. of the church

  430. that was coming

  431. from the mouths

  432. of the apostles

  433. in these letters

  434. was expected

  435. to be as powerful

  436. to Christians

  437. as the Old Testament,

  438. as eyewitness testimony,

  439. as all the Scriptures.

  440. He applies

  441. in our passage today,

  442. verse 21,

  443. to Paul

  444. as one

  445. who spoke from God

  446. as if they were carried

  447. along by the Holy Spirit.

  448. Testimony validates Jesus.

  449. The prophetic word

  450. witnesses Jesus.

  451. Scriptures validate

  452. other Scriptures.

  453. It's the testimony

  454. of the apostles too

  455. that were part

  456. of the Holy Spirit's work.

  457. They were all inspired

  458. by the Spirit of God.

  459. They are trustworthy.

  460. And likewise,

  461. as they were inspired,

  462. as their sails

  463. were filled,

  464. so are ours

  465. as we experience

  466. the Bible.

  467. That experience

  468. as we see Jesus

  469. through Peter's testimony

  470. and Mark,

  471. his reminders

  472. in his letters

  473. and Paul's letters

  474. and the other Gospels

  475. and the Old Testament

  476. and everything in here

  477. changes life

  478. for us.

  479. And Peter says

  480. that opening Scripture

  481. in verse 19

  482. is like

  483. is the experience.

  484. Here's why I said

  485. when Merle had finished

  486. her reading,

  487. what have we just experienced?

  488. This is what Peter thinks

  489. we've just experienced.

  490. A light shining

  491. in a dark place.

  492. To truly be

  493. ever in the dark,

  494. pitch dark,

  495. is terrifying.

  496. I heard a true story

  497. this week.

  498. There were war planes

  499. coming back

  500. from a dog fight

  501. in a world war

  502. and they were flying back

  503. over the Atlantic Ocean

  504. trying to land

  505. on their aircraft carrier

  506. but they couldn't see it.

  507. They knew where it was

  508. but they couldn't see it

  509. in the pitch dark

  510. of the night.

  511. and they radioed down

  512. to try and tell

  513. the aircraft carrier

  514. hey can you put the lights on

  515. we don't know where to land.

  516. And the aircraft carrier said

  517. no we can't.

  518. We've got intel

  519. that there's threats

  520. above and below

  521. that if we are seen

  522. they'll shoot us

  523. and we'll sink.

  524. So we can't put our lights on.

  525. They had nowhere to land

  526. and they perished

  527. in the dark waves

  528. of the Atlantic Ocean.

  529. Peter says that

  530. to not open scripture

  531. or pay attention to it

  532. is to keep our eyes

  533. shut to the light

  534. that we need to see

  535. in the darkness

  536. of our world.

  537. Jesus says

  538. in John 8

  539. 12

  540. 12

  541. I am the light

  542. of the world.

  543. Imagery of light

  544. in the Bible

  545. usually is pointing us

  546. to Jesus.

  547. If you're a Christian

  548. you might have had

  549. a moment

  550. of seeing that light

  551. for the first time.

  552. When you see Jesus

  553. as Lord and God

  554. like a dawn

  555. of the most wonderful day

  556. you've ever experienced.

  557. Light exploding

  558. over the horizon

  559. into the darkness

  560. of your life

  561. and your mind

  562. and your heart

  563. receive it

  564. and remember it.

  565. Friends

  566. every time

  567. Christians open

  568. scripture

  569. they return

  570. to that source

  571. of light

  572. to enjoy

  573. what they first

  574. eyewitnessed

  575. through the Holy Spirit

  576. in its pages.

  577. And then

  578. the next verse

  579. of John 8

  580. is just astonishing.

  581. It's on the screen

  582. verse 13

  583. the Pharisees challenged him

  584. here you are

  585. appearing as your own witness

  586. your testimony

  587. is not valid.

  588. Oh how wrong

  589. they were.

  590. The Holy Spirit

  591. testifies with Jesus

  592. to the fact

  593. that he is

  594. the light of the world.

  595. All of scripture

  596. God himself

  597. Peter, James, John

  598. they all testify

  599. that Jesus

  600. is the light

  601. of the world.

  602. And if we didn't

  603. need light

  604. if we didn't need

  605. Jesus

  606. if we didn't

  607. need anything

  608. if you didn't

  609. need the experience

  610. of scripture

  611. then the world

  612. wouldn't need Jesus.

  613. You wouldn't need

  614. any of this information.

  615. We wouldn't need

  616. to be here.

  617. We wouldn't need

  618. to open our Bibles.

  619. But we do need it

  620. because this world

  621. is as deep

  622. as darkness

  623. compared to a life

  624. with Jesus.

  625. By his light

  626. we see what is

  627. in the dark

  628. and turn away

  629. and turn to him

  630. for safety

  631. by the light

  632. of the world.

  633. Jesus who said

  634. whoever follows me

  635. will never walk

  636. in darkness

  637. but will have

  638. the light

  639. of life.

  640. He is eternally

  641. committed

  642. to every Christian

  643. to always be

  644. their light.

  645. he stepped

  646. into our

  647. darkness

  648. to lead us

  649. into his

  650. eternal light.

  651. If we're warplanes

  652. in the dark

  653. of the night sky

  654. and there's a threat

  655. to the aircraft

  656. carrier

  657. ship

  658. that's Jesus

  659. he would turn

  660. his lights on

  661. until

  662. verse 19

  663. says

  664. of our passage

  665. today

  666. the day dawns

  667. and the morning

  668. star

  669. rises

  670. in your hearts

  671. for there will

  672. be a day

  673. when Jesus

  674. who is called

  675. the morning star

  676. in the Old Testament

  677. in Isaiah 14

  678. and in Revelation

  679. in chapter 22

  680. when Jesus

  681. will finally come

  682. in the dawn

  683. of an unending

  684. day

  685. Jesus himself

  686. will be

  687. with us.

  688. He will satisfy

  689. the hopes

  690. of every heart

  691. so we will

  692. no longer walk

  693. in darkness

  694. again.

  695. We will not

  696. need our

  697. Bibles

  698. then

  699. but we will

  700. experience

  701. what we now

  702. find in

  703. scripture

  704. truly face

  705. to face

  706. with Jesus

  707. but until

  708. that morning

  709. star rises

  710. until Jesus

  711. comes again

  712. the real sun

  713. rises over

  714. our city

  715. day after

  716. day after

  717. day.

  718. Every day

  719. we have a choice

  720. to turn to the

  721. light of Jesus

  722. in scripture

  723. or not.

  724. So look

  725. back in our

  726. passage today

  727. 1 Peter

  728. let's go back

  729. to verse 13

  730. I think it

  731. right to

  732. refresh your

  733. memory

  734. as long

  735. as I

  736. live in

  737. the tent

  738. of this

  739. body

  740. because I

  741. know that I

  742. will soon

  743. put it aside

  744. as the Lord

  745. Jesus Christ

  746. has made

  747. clear to me

  748. and I

  749. will make

  750. every effort

  751. to see that

  752. after my

  753. departure

  754. you will

  755. always be

  756. able to

  757. remember

  758. these things.

  759. Do you see

  760. Peter's hope

  761. for you here

  762. as a Christian

  763. written in

  764. his will

  765. or as

  766. someone who

  767. doesn't yet

  768. follow Jesus

  769. watching what

  770. God is

  771. promising

  772. Christians?

  773. He would

  774. see Christians

  775. as always

  776. able to

  777. remember all

  778. he testified

  779. to and

  780. all scripture's

  781. testimony along

  782. with it so

  783. we can live

  784. life seeing

  785. in the dark.

  786. We can only

  787. keep tiny

  788. fragments of

  789. the wonder of

  790. scripture in

  791. our mind at

  792. any one time.

  793. You might have

  794. remembered the

  795. whole of the

  796. book of

  797. Romans but

  798. there's so

  799. much more

  800. than just

  801. that.

  802. The regular

  803. daily

  804. deliberate

  805. hopeful

  806. Bible reading

  807. was what

  808. people knew

  809. we needed

  810. for life

  811. more than

  812. we needed

  813. him even

  814. though we'd

  815. never seen

  816. a Bible.

  817. His efforts

  818. put words

  819. in our

  820. hands.

  821. He was

  822. killed for

  823. what he

  824. put in

  825. our hands

  826. so we

  827. would always

  828. be reading

  829. and seeing

  830. the light

  831. never blind

  832. in the

  833. dark of

  834. our world.

  835. I left

  836. out two

  837. verses

  838. on purpose

  839. from Peter's

  840. little photo.

  841. I just want

  842. to point to

  843. them as we

  844. finish off

  845. today.

  846. On the

  847. mountain

  848. when that

  849. astonishing

  850. wonderful thing

  851. is happening

  852. and blowing

  853. Peter's mind

  854. Peter piped

  855. up and

  856. said

  857. Rabbi

  858. it's good

  859. for us

  860. to be

  861. here.

  862. Let's

  863. put up

  864. three

  865. shelters

  866. one for

  867. you

  868. one for

  869. Moses

  870. and one

  871. for

  872. Elijah.

  873. He did

  874. not know

  875. what to

  876. say.

  877. They were

  878. so frightened.

  879. Isn't Peter

  880. relatable?

  881. He always

  882. opens his

  883. mouth and

  884. says something

  885. stupid.

  886. But do you

  887. see the word

  888. shelter there

  889. on the

  890. screen?

  891. it's tent

  892. in other

  893. translations.

  894. In the

  895. Greek

  896. original

  897. Greek

  898. it's the

  899. word

  900. tabernacle.

  901. The same

  902. word

  903. Peter uses

  904. to describe

  905. his body

  906. in our

  907. passage

  908. today.

  909. When

  910. Peter dies

  911. he's going

  912. to cast

  913. off his

  914. temporary

  915. shelter

  916. looking forward

  917. to receiving

  918. a glorified

  919. body that

  920. he just

  921. saw Jesus

  922. take on

  923. up the

  924. mountain.

  925. he's

  926. remembering

  927. this stupid

  928. thing that

  929. he said

  930. to Jesus

  931. in that

  932. moment

  933. about

  934. building

  935. tents

  936. for them

  937. to dwell

  938. there

  939. because he

  940. knew he

  941. missed the

  942. point on

  943. that day.

  944. Jesus

  945. had given

  946. up the

  947. glory of

  948. heaven

  949. to take

  950. up this

  951. tent

  952. dwelling

  953. of a

  954. body

  955. so we

  956. could look

  957. forward to

  958. a new

  959. life beyond

  960. our aging

  961. tents.

  962. In

  963. 2 Peter

  964. he's now

  965. well into

  966. his 60s

  967. he's facing

  968. execution for

  969. his faith

  970. and he's

  971. probably

  972. chuckling to

  973. himself as

  974. he describes

  975. his own

  976. body as

  977. a tent

  978. because he

  979. discovered that

  980. what he did

  981. in the tent

  982. of his body

  983. on earth

  984. mattered for

  985. eternity

  986. and he

  987. lived boldly

  988. in the

  989. light of

  990. his Lord

  991. Jesus

  992. and Peter

  993. would call

  994. us to

  995. do the

  996. same.

  997. Peter wrote

  998. in this

  999. letter

  1000. probably

  1001. reflecting on

  1002. Moses

  1003. words in

  1004. Deuteronomy

  1005. 4 that

  1006. would have

  1007. been well

  1008. known to

  1009. those of a

  1010. Jewish

  1011. background.

  1012. Do not

  1013. forget the

  1014. things your

  1015. eyes have

  1016. seen.

  1017. Let them

  1018. fade from

  1019. your heart

  1020. as long

  1021. as you

  1022. live.

  1023. Experiencing

  1024. the Bible

  1025. is your

  1026. chance to

  1027. see Jesus

  1028. in a way

  1029. more sure

  1030. than the

  1031. eyewitness

  1032. Peter did.

  1033. Inspired by

  1034. the Holy

  1035. Spirit,

  1036. Scripture

  1037. speaks to

  1038. you by

  1039. that same

  1040. Spirit of

  1041. God.

  1042. And as we

  1043. read,

  1044. we see

  1045. light that

  1046. guides our

  1047. way in the

  1048. darkness of

  1049. this world.

  1050. And once

  1051. experienced,

  1052. the Bible

  1053. continues to

  1054. light our

  1055. journey,

  1056. our way

  1057. every day

  1058. until Jesus

  1059. comes back.

  1060. So what are

  1061. you going to

  1062. do with it?

  1063. what are

  1064. you going to

  1065. do with

  1066. your Bible?

  1067. Maybe

  1068. not drop

  1069. it.

  1070. Is

  1071. experiencing

  1072. this work

  1073. going to

  1074. matter to

  1075. you?

  1076. There are

  1077. so many

  1078. distractions

  1079. here in

  1080. the dark.

  1081. They want

  1082. to pull

  1083. your face

  1084. away,

  1085. to shut

  1086. these pages,

  1087. to even

  1088. forget where

  1089. your Bible

  1090. is.

  1091. And I'm

  1092. too often

  1093. deceived,

  1094. to keep

  1095. this word

  1096. shut and

  1097. on the

  1098. shelf

  1099. myself.

  1100. Don't

  1101. listen to

  1102. those

  1103. distractions.

  1104. If you're

  1105. one who

  1106. has never

  1107. seen

  1108. Jesus,

  1109. open a

  1110. gospel.

  1111. Get the

  1112. word

  1113. one-to-one

  1114. app,

  1115. which is

  1116. like a

  1117. guided tour

  1118. through one

  1119. of the

  1120. gospels

  1121. written

  1122. by John,

  1123. who's also

  1124. there on

  1125. the mountain

  1126. with Peter,

  1127. an eyewitness

  1128. to Jesus.

  1129. Open the

  1130. word to

  1131. see the

  1132. light that

  1133. you need

  1134. that shows

  1135. Jesus for

  1136. who he

  1137. really is.

  1138. And to

  1139. you who

  1140. are here

  1141. this morning,

  1142. who say

  1143. you have

  1144. seen Jesus

  1145. but are

  1146. not opening

  1147. your Bible,

  1148. ask God

  1149. for the

  1150. desire to

  1151. see him.

  1152. He will

  1153. help you.

  1154. Do not

  1155. leave your

  1156. eyes shut

  1157. in the

  1158. dark any

  1159. longer.

  1160. And ask

  1161. for help.

  1162. staff would

  1163. love to

  1164. speak to

  1165. you today,

  1166. anyone wearing

  1167. one of

  1168. these,

  1169. to help

  1170. you find,

  1171. even though

  1172. your lips are

  1173. declaring that

  1174. you follow

  1175. Jesus,

  1176. that your

  1177. life shows

  1178. that you

  1179. are also

  1180. interested

  1181. and desiring

  1182. to experience

  1183. light in

  1184. his word.

  1185. Speak to

  1186. someone to

  1187. help you

  1188. shift that

  1189. attitude today.

  1190. And for

  1191. those of

  1192. you who

  1193. are opening

  1194. God's

  1195. word,

  1196. more often

  1197. than not,

  1198. four or

  1199. more times

  1200. a week,

  1201. keep reading.

  1202. Peter would

  1203. have reminded

  1204. you that no

  1205. matter how

  1206. often your

  1207. Bible is

  1208. opened,

  1209. to keep

  1210. looking into

  1211. the light,

  1212. keep seeing

  1213. Jesus for

  1214. the sake of

  1215. defending

  1216. Jesus' power

  1217. and majesty

  1218. like he spent

  1219. his life

  1220. doing,

  1221. for your

  1222. own sake

  1223. and for

  1224. the sake of

  1225. those you

  1226. live alongside,

  1227. at home and

  1228. at work or

  1229. wherever you

  1230. are,

  1231. who witness

  1232. you living

  1233. for Jesus,

  1234. testifying to

  1235. them in

  1236. word and

  1237. action,

  1238. that he is

  1239. the light

  1240. of your

  1241. world and

  1242. theirs.

  1243. They can't

  1244. see him

  1245. without

  1246. experiencing

  1247. scripture.

  1248. So,

  1249. ready yourself

  1250. to open the

  1251. Bible with

  1252. others.

  1253. God,

  1254. it's how we

  1255. all can

  1256. witness Jesus

  1257. in a way

  1258. more sure

  1259. than we've

  1260. witnessed your

  1261. changed life

  1262. lived in his

  1263. light.

  1264. Let's ask God

  1265. to help us

  1266. as we experience

  1267. the scripture.

  1268. Let's pray.

  1269. Lord God,

  1270. you know us

  1271. and love us.

  1272. Thank you for

  1273. giving us your

  1274. words in the

  1275. Bible to

  1276. experience the

  1277. wind of your

  1278. spirit's

  1279. guidance,

  1280. that help us

  1281. see Jesus as

  1282. powerful,

  1283. glorious,

  1284. as your

  1285. son,

  1286. and reveal

  1287. him as

  1288. light that

  1289. guides us to

  1290. life in the

  1291. darkness of

  1292. our sinful

  1293. world.

  1294. We are so

  1295. imperfect,

  1296. just like Peter

  1297. was.

  1298. Would you

  1299. help us to

  1300. come to know

  1301. Jesus?

  1302. Would you

  1303. help us to

  1304. desire to

  1305. experience

  1306. scripture every

  1307. day?

  1308. Would you

  1309. help us to

  1310. share the

  1311. light of

  1312. scripture in

  1313. our lives,
