  1. We've just had the Paris Olympics 2024.

  2. I wonder if anyone in this room went to the Sydney Olympics 2000.

  3. Raise your hand.

  4. Quite a few of you actually were there.

  5. Keep your hand up if you actually saw Cathy Freeman win the 400.

  6. You were there to see that.

  7. I am so jealous.

  8. It was really quite difficult actually in days gone by,

  9. if I may speak as looking back, to witness something.

  10. You had to kind of be there in person in order to witness it.

  11. But then with the advent of television of course and more recently with now,

  12. in fact we have a phone in our pockets that has a camera and a video camera in it

  13. and we've got the internet,

  14. it's almost impossible not to see something that happened

  15. because it gets filmed and goes up online.

  16. Not much can happen these days without someone recording it.

  17. The emergence of this technology means that we have an enhanced capacity to be witnesses.

  18. But really that's just one side of witnessing,

  19. being the observer, the one who sees an event.

  20. Acts 1 describes for us Jesus' instruction to his disciples,

  21. and we'll see it there in verse 8.

  22. I'll put it up on the screen there for you.

  23. It says,

  24. This is the other side of disciples simply witnessing an event.

  25. They did that.

  26. But they are now not just to be the witnesses of,

  27. but to witness to others.

  28. Telling others of what they have seen and heard.

  29. This morning I want us to see two things.

  30. Firstly, how the disciples were to be witnesses

  31. in both the observing and the telling of what they'd seen.

  32. And secondly, significantly,

  33. what it means for us to be witnesses today,

  34. here in Chatswood 2024.

  35. Firstly though, let's have a look with you

  36. at what disciples are to be witnesses of.

  37. Luke wrote a big chunk of the New Testament.

  38. He wrote what we call Luke's Gospel,

  39. but then he wrote his volume 2,

  40. which is Acts.

  41. And in fact, Luke's Gospel

  42. and the beginning of Acts kind of overlap.

  43. The events at the very end of Luke's Gospel

  44. and the events at the very beginning of Acts overlap.

  45. Jesus, we read, had suffered,

  46. he'd died, he'd been buried,

  47. and then he rose again from the grave.

  48. And then for about 40 days,

  49. there was a period before he was taken up into heaven.

  50. Luke 24 describes how after Jesus' resurrection,

  51. he met with various disciples.

  52. He met with two disciples on the road to Emmaus,

  53. and then he asked them about the things they had witnessed.

  54. Jesus explained to them

  55. how he was the fulfillment

  56. of all the Old Testament scriptures.

  57. Jesus then appeared in the very midst of the disciples.

  58. He showed them his hands and his feet.

  59. He even ate broiled fish with them.

  60. In other words, he proved that he was alive.

  61. He had physically, bodily risen from the dead.

  62. We read then in the end of Luke's Gospel,

  63. and I'll put it up on the screen there

  64. where you can open your own Bibles.

  65. Luke 24 from verse 44,

  66. Jesus said to the disciples,

  67. This is what I told you while I was still with you.

  68. Everything must be fulfilled

  69. that is written about me in the law of Moses,

  70. the prophets, and the Psalms.

  71. In other words,

  72. everything must be fulfilled about me

  73. that is written in the whole of the Bible.

  74. And then he opened their minds

  75. so they could understand the scriptures.

  76. Jesus told them,

  77. This is what is written.

  78. The Messiah will suffer

  79. and rise from the dead on the third day,

  80. and repentance for the forgiveness of sins

  81. will be preached in his name to all nations,

  82. beginning at Jerusalem.

  83. And then there's that word again,

  84. You are witnesses of these things,

  85. see what he told them.

  86. Notice the reminder here

  87. that the disciples,

  88. they are witnesses,

  89. and they are to be witnesses.

  90. Then we read in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  91. the very first verse we read just a moment ago,

  92. Luke writes,

  93. In my former book, Theophilus,

  94. that is, he's referring to Luke's gospel,

  95. I wrote about all that Jesus began to do

  96. and to teach

  97. until the day he was taken up into heaven,

  98. after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit

  99. to the apostles he had chosen.

  100. But don't you think that's a curious expression?

  101. It says,

  102. All that Jesus began to do and to teach

  103. until he is taken up into heaven.

  104. That implies that Jesus is going to continue to do

  105. and to teach

  106. after he's been taken up into heaven.

  107. How can that be?

  108. Well, Acts 1 gives us the answer.

  109. In Acts chapter 1, verse 3,

    Acts 1:3

  110. we are reminded

  111. that the risen Jesus

  112. presented himself to many people

  113. and gave many convincing proofs

  114. that he was alive.

  115. So for 40 days,

  116. Jesus appeared to people

  117. to confirm that he had physically,

  118. bodily,

  119. risen from the dead.

  120. They witnessed that.

  121. They saw that with their own eyes.

  122. And they were in turn then

  123. to be witnesses of the things they had seen.

  124. Jesus then went on to speak about the what next.

  125. Not a kind of a five-year plan

  126. or a strategic plan

  127. or a governance plan.

  128. No, and not a modest plan either.

  129. But a plan that was entirely in accord

  130. with God's promises

  131. from the beginning of time.

  132. The Jesus plan

  133. is about the coming

  134. of the kingdom of God.

  135. Now, here in Chatswood

  136. and all around the place

  137. on a couple of weeks' time,

  138. 14th September,

  139. the New South Wales

  140. local government elections will occur.

  141. And probably in your letterbox,

  142. like mine,

  143. you've been getting outlines

  144. of what candidates are promising to do

  145. if they are elected.

  146. And they're quite often

  147. ambitious aims

  148. that these candidates are suggesting.

  149. Ambitious aims

  150. but for the local area.

  151. The Jesus plan

  152. is entirely different.

  153. It's on another level altogether.

  154. It doesn't just pertain to

  155. one part of one city

  156. in one period of time.

  157. But the Jesus plan

  158. is for all people

  159. for all time

  160. in every part of the world.

  161. So,

  162. look again at verse 4

  163. of chapter 1 of Acts.

  164. Jesus,

  165. Luke reminds us rather

  166. that while Jesus

  167. was having a meal

  168. with his disciples,

  169. he outlined

  170. his plan.

  171. Notice, of course,

  172. it wasn't a suggestion.

  173. It wasn't something

  174. he was putting out there

  175. to be kind of workshopped.

  176. No, this was

  177. a command.

  178. It was to be understood

  179. and obeyed.

  180. Verse 4,

  181. Do not leave Jerusalem,

  182. said Jesus,

  183. but wait.

  184. And here I think we have

  185. in what

  186. at first blush

  187. looks like a very

  188. odd

  189. plan.

  190. In former days,

  191. I worked for a couple

  192. of large

  193. multinationals,

  194. including in the food industry.

  195. And when a food manufacturer,

  196. a global food manufacturer,

  197. finds a product

  198. that they believe

  199. is going to

  200. just go gangbusters

  201. across the whole world,

  202. then they work out

  203. a strategic plan

  204. in order to do

  205. a global rollout

  206. of this.

  207. I was working

  208. for the Mars group

  209. at the time

  210. they were going

  211. to roll out

  212. the Mars ice cream bars

  213. around the world.

  214. Now, I cannot imagine

  215. for one moment

  216. the director of sales

  217. and marketing

  218. saying to his

  219. sales managers

  220. that, hey,

  221. we've got this

  222. fantastic product

  223. ready to go

  224. and here's what

  225. I want you to do.

  226. Stay here in Chatswood

  227. and wait.

  228. You think,

  229. that doesn't make sense.

  230. Why would...

  231. And you see,

  232. but that's what

  233. Jesus' command was.

  234. I want you to see

  235. the stark difference

  236. between the Jesus plan

  237. and the corporate world.

  238. Why would Jesus

  239. say to his disciples,

  240. wait,

  241. stay in Jerusalem?

  242. Well, the answer

  243. is found in the second

  244. part of the verse.

  245. Jesus' disciples

  246. are called

  247. to trust in him

  248. and to wait

  249. for the gift

  250. that his father

  251. had promised,

  252. the gift of the Holy Spirit,

  253. the gift that heard him

  254. speak so much about.

  255. Do not leave Jerusalem,

  256. he says,

  257. but wait for the gifts

  258. my father promised.

  259. You see,

  260. if they were to charge off

  261. and try and fulfill

  262. the great commission

  263. without waiting

  264. for the Holy Spirit,

  265. then they'll be doing it

  266. in their own strength.

  267. They'll be doing it

  268. in their own capacities,

  269. in their own power.

  270. That's not the Jesus plan.

  271. The Jesus plan

  272. is that they will be

  273. witnesses around the globe,

  274. but not in their own strength.

  275. They'll be doing it

  276. in the power

  277. of the Holy Spirit.

  278. God's people

  279. are to obey

  280. his commands

  281. and not witness

  282. in their own strength,

  283. but to receive

  284. the power

  285. of the Holy Spirit

  286. and Jesus promised

  287. in verse 5,

  288. in a few days

  289. they would be baptized

  290. with the Holy Spirit.

  291. That event,

  292. which we know

  293. as Pentecost,

  294. did happen

  295. just 10 days later.

  296. We read in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  297. that at that time

  298. the apostles

  299. were enabled

  300. to do that,

  301. which is humanly speaking

  302. quite impossible.

  303. They had people

  304. from around the world

  305. gathered there

  306. and they were able

  307. to preach the gospel

  308. and be understood,

  309. each person understood it

  310. in their native language.

  311. Now I did a little bit

  312. of research

  313. during the week

  314. about Chatswood

  315. and the census data

  316. says that these

  317. are the top languages

  318. spoken at homes

  319. in Chatswood.

  320. English creeps in

  321. at number one,

  322. Mandarin,

  323. Cantonese,

  324. Korean,

  325. Japanese and Hindi.

  326. Now I'd be surprised

  327. if there weren't people

  328. in this room

  329. this morning

  330. who speak

  331. these languages.

  332. Imagine if I was then

  333. preaching as I am

  334. in English

  335. and you were actually

  336. hearing it

  337. in Mandarin

  338. or Cantonese

  339. or Korean.

  340. That's what was happening

  341. at Pentecost.

  342. That was the power

  343. of the Holy Spirit.

  344. Jesus promised them

  345. that they would receive

  346. power

  347. when the Holy Spirit

  348. came.

  349. That word power,

  350. the Greek word

  351. is dynamon,

  352. dunamon,

  353. from which we get

  354. the English word dynamite.

  355. We're talking about

  356. an extraordinary power

  357. that came upon them

  358. that they're able

  359. to do that.

  360. And it is in that

  361. extraordinary power

  362. that they are

  363. to proceed

  364. to be witnesses,

  365. Jesus' witnesses

  366. in Judea and Samaria

  367. and then

  368. to the ends

  369. of the earth.

  370. in the early chapters

  371. of Acts,

  372. we see that the world

  373. was coming

  374. to Jerusalem.

  375. The model was

  376. an attractional one.

  377. People came

  378. to the city of David

  379. to Mount Zion.

  380. Jerusalem was a very

  381. attractive city

  382. to go to.

  383. Maybe not at the moment

  384. but I imagine,

  385. raise your hand

  386. if you've been to Jerusalem.

  387. Anyone here in the room

  388. been to Jerusalem?

  389. It's a really

  390. interesting city.

  391. People came

  392. from around the world

  393. to Jerusalem.

  394. And when they came,

  395. they heard the gospel

  396. in the power

  397. of the Holy Spirit.

  398. Thousands of people

  399. heard the gospel

  400. in their own mother tongue

  401. and responded

  402. in repentance

  403. and faith.

  404. And then

  405. those people

  406. returned

  407. to their

  408. places of origin.

  409. The Copernican

  410. revolution

  411. of global mission

  412. came a short while later.

  413. We read in Acts chapter 7,

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  414. so just a few chapters on,

  415. of Stephen

  416. speaks to the Sanhedrin.

  417. Now Stephen

  418. was asked

  419. to come

  420. and speak

  421. to the

  422. legal councils

  423. of the day,

  424. the heavies of the day.

  425. And he delivered

  426. what was an absolute

  427. cracker of a sermon.

  428. He drew on

  429. a lot of Old Testament

  430. references

  431. and showed

  432. how Jesus

  433. was the fulfillment

  434. of the promises

  435. of the Old Testament.

  436. It was an amazing sermon.

  437. So at the end of that,

  438. they decided

  439. they would take

  440. Stephen

  441. on a road trip

  442. to all the biggest

  443. stadia

  444. and all the

  445. major synagogues

  446. all around the world

  447. so that more people

  448. could...

  449. No, they didn't do that.

  450. Do you know

  451. what they did?

  452. They took him out

  453. after he delivered

  454. this incredible sermon

  455. and they

  456. stoned him.

  457. And again,

  458. we're kind of left

  459. scratching our head

  460. thinking,

  461. how can this

  462. be part of God's plan?

  463. How can it be part

  464. of God's plan

  465. to take out

  466. a man who

  467. had the capacity,

  468. one of the few

  469. on the planet

  470. at that moment

  471. who had the capacity

  472. to preach the gospel

  473. clearly

  474. and faithfully

  475. and boldly

  476. and after he

  477. does so,

  478. he's stoned

  479. to death.

  480. How can that

  481. be part of God's

  482. plan?

  483. Well, we actually

  484. see it in the next

  485. verse,

  486. the beginning of

  487. chapter 8,

  488. verse 1

  489. and we read there

  490. on that day,

  491. the day when

  492. Stephen was

  493. stoned to death,

  494. a great persecution

  495. broke out

  496. and all except

  497. the apostles

  498. were scattered

  499. throughout Judea

  500. and Samaria.

  501. You see,

  502. in God's economy,

  503. the tragic

  504. martyrdom

  505. of Stephen

  506. led to the

  507. spread of the

  508. gospel

  509. across the

  510. known world.

  511. The model

  512. of mission

  513. moved from being,

  514. if I remember

  515. my school of

  516. science correctly

  517. here,

  518. from being a

  519. centripetal one,

  520. that is the force

  521. of kind of coming

  522. in,

  523. to it becoming

  524. a centrifugal one,

  525. the force then

  526. the gospel

  527. going out,

  528. going out to

  529. take the gospel

  530. to the ends

  531. of the earth.

  532. Now,

  533. over the centuries,

  534. the church

  535. has fallen

  536. into this

  537. era of

  538. operating as

  539. if our

  540. mission mandate

  541. is fulfilled

  542. if we simply

  543. build churches

  544. on hills

  545. and then expect

  546. people to come.

  547. Building churches

  548. is important,

  549. but friends,

  550. our mission mandate

  551. is to go out,

  552. to be

  553. witnesses.

  554. witnesses.

  555. Did the

  556. first century

  557. disciples do

  558. that which

  559. they were

  560. commissioned

  561. to do?

  562. Yes,

  563. they did.

  564. How do I

  565. know that?

  566. Because we are

  567. sitting here in

  568. Chatswood,

  569. two millennia

  570. later,

  571. and Chatswood,

  572. beautiful place,

  573. but if I may say

  574. from a first century

  575. perspective,

  576. Jerusalem perspective

  577. is the ends

  578. of the earth.

  579. The gospel

  580. has come

  581. to the ends

  582. of the earth.

  583. Verse 8,

  584. Jesus said,

  585. they were to be

  586. witnesses in

  587. Jerusalem

  588. and all Judea

  589. and Samaria

  590. and to the

  591. ends of the earth.

  592. Let's consider

  593. our context

  594. here.

  595. In Sydney

  596. 2024,

  597. we do a

  598. pretty good

  599. job of

  600. being witnesses

  601. of Jesus

  602. in our

  603. Jerusalem,

  604. our Judea,

  605. that is,

  606. in the Sydney

  607. Diocese.

  608. And we do a

  609. pretty good job

  610. of supporting

  611. ministries that

  612. go out from

  613. here to the

  614. ends of the

  615. earth.

  616. So organizations

  617. like CMS

  618. are supporting

  619. ministries to

  620. the nations.

  621. nations.

  622. But what

  623. about our

  624. Samaria?

  625. What about

  626. the 7 million

  627. people who

  628. live in regional,

  629. rural and remote

  630. parts of

  631. Australia?

  632. They're often

  633. forgotten.

  634. The BCA

  635. mission is

  636. entirely in

  637. accord with

  638. the Jesus

  639. mission.

  640. The BCA

  641. strategic plan

  642. is entirely

  643. in accord

  644. with Jesus

  645. strategic plan.

  646. That is,

  647. to go the

  648. distance,

  649. to take

  650. the gospel,

  651. not just

  652. to the

  653. cities,

  654. not just

  655. to the

  656. nation,

  657. but to the

  658. original rural

  659. and remote

  660. parts,

  661. to all

  662. people.

  663. To places

  664. like, and

  665. you can see

  666. them on the

  667. map there,

  668. Exmouth and

  669. Roxby Downs

  670. and Cobar,

  671. Cobar,

  672. and what I was

  673. speaking about

  674. before,

  675. in the western

  676. part of New

  677. South Wales,

  678. and Newman

  679. and Kununurra,

  680. right up there

  681. in the north,

  682. in the western

  683. Australia,

  684. north of western

  685. Australia.

  686. I mentioned

  687. before that

  688. we have

  689. more than

  690. 10,000

  691. prayer supporters

  692. in

  693. New South

  694. Wales,

  695. diligently

  696. upholding

  697. these ministries

  698. in prayer

  699. using the

  700. BCA prayer

  701. notes.

  702. Now,

  703. last Thursday

  704. in the

  705. prayer notes,

  706. if you

  707. looked there,

  708. last Thursday,

  709. I remember

  710. the date,

  711. it was my

  712. wife's birthday,

  713. on the 29th,

  714. George and

  715. Carmel Ferguson

  716. are listed.

  717. Now,

  718. they're in

  719. Walgett and

  720. Colorado,

  721. and you read

  722. there,

  723. it's a little

  724. bit too small

  725. on the screen,

  726. but you can

  727. read it in

  728. your prayer

  729. notes later,

  730. that George

  731. and Carmel

  732. are committed

  733. to preaching

  734. the gospel

  735. and spreading

  736. the good news

  737. of salvation.

  738. We might add

  739. to the ends

  740. of the earth,

  741. or we could

  742. use the language

  743. of Acts,

    Acts 1:8

  744. chapter 1,

  745. verse 8,

  746. to Samaria.

  747. They're out

  748. there in

  749. Walgett and

  750. Colorado,

  751. and I,

  752. trusting in

  753. the Holy Spirit,

  754. thousands of

  755. people across

  756. the country

  757. pray regularly

  758. to support

  759. the BCA

  760. mission.

  761. Not because

  762. it's the

  763. BCA mission

  764. per se,

  765. because that

  766. mission aligns

  767. with the

  768. Jesus mission.

  769. So let me

  770. ask you this

  771. morning,

  772. will you

  773. please join

  774. us in

  775. this part

  776. of the

  777. mission,

  778. and pray

  779. and give

  780. to support

  781. the gospel

  782. going to

  783. our Samaria.

  784. As disciples

  785. of Jesus,

  786. our mission

  787. and our plans

  788. need to

  789. continue to

  790. be aligned

  791. with Jesus'

  792. plan,

  793. to bring

  794. people across

  795. the globe

  796. under the

  797. sound of

  798. the gospel,

  799. so that

  800. people in

  801. the cities,

  802. people in

  803. the suburbs

  804. of Chatswood

  805. and beyond,

  806. people right

  807. across Australia

  808. and across

  809. the nations,

  810. come under

  811. the sound

  812. of the gospel.

  813. That is our

  814. privilege,

  815. and that is

  816. our responsibility

  817. as witnesses

  818. of the gospel.

  819. So,

  820. here at

  821. St.

  822. Paul's,

  823. you must

  824. continue to

  825. strategize as

  826. to how to

  827. reach the

  828. many people

  829. of Chatswood

  830. who do

  831. not yet know

  832. Jesus as

  833. their Lord

  834. and Savior.

  835. You must

  836. continue to

  837. strategize,

  838. but if I

  839. may say,

  840. not rely

  841. upon those

  842. strategies,

  843. but rather

  844. rely upon the

  845. power of the

  846. Holy Spirit

  847. that the Lord

  848. has promised

  849. to us before

  850. his ascension.

  851. salvation.

  852. We've seen

  853. how the

  854. first disciples

  855. were to be

  856. witnesses of

  857. the gospel,

  858. and what

  859. Jesus'

  860. command is

  861. for us

  862. to in turn

  863. be witnesses

  864. of the gospel.

  865. We've seen

  866. the what.

  867. Let me finish

  868. this morning

  869. with the why.

  870. Why are we

  871. to press on

  872. to seek to

  873. bring all

  874. people under

  875. the sound

  876. of the gospel?

  877. The compelling

  878. reason is

  879. found in the

  880. final verse

  881. of today's

  882. passage.

  883. After Jesus

  884. had given

  885. this command

  886. to witness

  887. to the

  888. world,

  889. he ascended

  890. to heaven,

  891. and then the

  892. angels gave

  893. those who

  894. were standing

  895. there this

  896. reminder.

  897. This is the

  898. why.

  899. Jesus is

  900. coming back.

  901. Why do we

  902. keep going

  903. the distance

  904. to witness

  905. the gospel

  906. to all

  907. people?

  908. Who is my

  909. friends?

  910. Jesus is

  911. coming back.

  912. Let's pray.

  913. Our

  914. gracious God

  915. and heavenly

  916. Father, we

  917. do thank you

  918. that in your

  919. love and

  920. mercy you

  921. sent your

  922. son, the

  923. Lord Jesus,

  924. to be born

  925. as a man,

  926. to live among

  927. us with all

  928. the struggles

  929. and temptations

  930. of life,

  931. but to live

  932. without sin.

  933. Thank you

  934. that Jesus

  935. so loved us

  936. that he

  937. willingly

  938. suffered and

  939. died to

  940. pay the

  941. price for

  942. our sins.

  943. God

  944. and

  945. thank you

  946. that just

  947. as predicted

  948. Jesus rose

  949. again from

  950. the grave

  951. and proved

  952. that he

  953. was alive.

  954. Thank you

  955. that Jesus

  956. promised the

  957. gift of the

  958. Holy Spirit

  959. and we

  960. thank you

  961. that in your

  962. plan for the

  963. salvation of

  964. all mankind,

  965. you've chosen

  966. to include

  967. us.

  968. Father, we

  969. praise you

  970. that we do

  971. not have to

  972. proceed in

  973. our own

  974. strength,

  975. but rather in

  976. the power of

  977. your Holy

  978. Spirit.

  979. As we

  980. seek to

  981. continue to

  982. take the

  983. good news

  984. of the

  985. gospel to

  986. the ends

  987. of the

  988. earth, to

  989. the remote

  990. places of

  991. Australia and

  992. here in

  993. Chatswood,

  994. give us

  995. courage and

  996. a deep

  997. trust in

  998. you and

  999. the power

  1000. of your

  1001. spirit.

  1002. We pray

  1003. this in

  1004. Jesus'

  1005. name as

  1006. we await

  1007. his return.

  1008. Amen.

  1009. Amen.

  1010. Amen.

  1011. Amen.
