  1. Well, good morning everyone. As some of you will be aware, I've been away on long service

  2. leave and this is the first time I've preached since June. That could be dangerous. But to

  3. come back in, in this series and to preach in this series at the most crucial point of

  4. it, I consider to be a great joy and privilege. I was listening to Dennis earlier, I was listening

  5. earlier, coming to Christ in his 20s. I was 23 when I discovered the answer to the crucial

  6. question that we are looking at today. When I looked at this text, there's multiple different

  7. angles that you could take on it. I considered maybe doing a sermon on political power, given

  8. that we were at elections yesterday and I've considered a whole range of different things.

  9. But the crucial question of this passage is why did Jesus of Nazareth have to die?

  10. Why did he have to die? And I was 23 when I discovered the answer to that question for the first

  11. time. I had grown up attending churches like potentially you. I had read the Bible, in fact,

  12. a number of times up to the age of 23. I knew a bunch of Christian practices and rituals.

  13. I knew many Christian truths. And I knew that Jesus was central to everything. But my overall

  14. impression was that if I served Jesus, then Jesus would serve me. If I approved of him, he

  15. would approve of me. If I said sorry to him, then he would forgive me. And if I kept saying sorry to

  16. him and providing at the point of my death, I'd said sorry more than I'd had sins, then I would be okay.

  17. I was 23, sitting in a scenario not unlike this, and I discovered for the first time in my life,

  18. it was actually about him and not about me. It was all about what he had done and not what I was trying

  19. to do. So what we're looking at over the next three Sundays is what is central to the Christian faith.

  20. And I make no assumptions whatsoever, at all. You could have walked into this building for the first time,

  21. or you could have been sitting in a building like this all of your life, and you still may not get it.

  22. Why did Jesus have to die? That's the crucial question. Lord Tennyson, the 19th century English

  23. poet, described Jesus' life as more beautiful than the greatest of his miracles. Very few people in

  24. history have ever dared to question the outstanding nature of the character of Jesus of Nazareth.

  25. And on top of an exemplary life, his teaching gave rise to the values of Western civilization and have

  26. impacted virtually every culture across the globe for over 2,000 years. Transforming lives and cultures.

  27. Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  28. Love your neighbor as yourself. His influence is without doubt greater than any other human being that has ever lived.

  29. So why did Jesus of Nazareth end his life on a Roman cross like a hardened criminal?

  30. It makes no sense. And it's the answer to that question that drives us to the very heart of the Christian faith,

  31. the heart of this church, and why we declare that we treasure Jesus above all else.

  32. So I've got three points on this sermon on the St. Paul's app.

  33. The wickedness of humanity, the will of God, and the willingness of Jesus.

  34. That's the trajectory for us today.

  35. These words in front of us are the account of the Apostle John,

  36. one of Jesus' closest followers.

  37. They are an eyewitness account of his trial and his death.

  38. One of the noticeable differences with John's gospel,

  39. Passion of the Christ,

  40. noticeable in his, compared to Matthew, Mark and Luke,

  41. is how much time

  42. John gives to the recording,

  43. the actual trial of Jesus.

  44. And scholars say the difference with John and the others

  45. is that John wants to put an awful lot of focus

  46. in implicating all of humanity

  47. in the crucifixion of Jesus.

  48. First half of chapter 18,

  49. Judas betrays Jesus out of greed.

  50. In the middle of chapter 18,

  51. the disciples desert him out of cowardice

  52. and disillusionment.

  53. Chapter 19,

  54. the religious authorities murder him out of envy.

  55. The soldiers torture and mock him

  56. out of heartless ignorance.

  57. And Pilate washes his hands of him

  58. in order to please his constituents.

  59. Greed,

  60. envy,

  61. cowardice,

  62. people-pleasing,

  63. holding Jesus at arm's length.

  64. Everyone here is implicated in his death

  65. despite the fact that his innocence

  66. is without doubt.

  67. Three times,

  68. which if you know biblical language,

  69. three times is a word,

  70. is an emphasis.

  71. Three times,

  72. Pilate insists that Jesus is innocent.

  73. 1838,

  74. I find no basis for a charge against him.

  75. 1904,

  76. I find no basis for a charge against him.

  77. 1906,

  78. I find no basis for a charge against him.

  79. The innocence of Jesus is beyond doubt.

  80. 1906,

  81. but also through this account,

  82. as we've seen through the rest of John,

  83. the status of Jesus is well attested.

  84. From the very first chapter of this gospel,

  85. he's been declared as the creator God

  86. entering this world to fix it.

  87. He's healed the sick.

  88. He's turned water into wine.

  89. He's raised the dead.

  90. He's fed the hungry.

  91. He's walked on water.

  92. At every point,

  93. his words are not mumbled at all.

  94. He declares himself equal with God.

  95. He says that he and the father are one

  96. and that anyone who has seen him

  97. has seen God himself.

  98. He declares that he is the way,

  99. the truth and the life.

  100. And despite the evidence of his life

  101. and his works,

  102. everyone joins together

  103. to rid the earth of him.

  104. For instance,

  105. the religious elite

  106. do what the religious establishment

  107. over the world always do.

  108. And that is they maintain the status quo.

  109. They're interested in their power

  110. and their influence.

  111. Their hypocrisy is revealed

  112. as they cry out,

  113. we have no king.

  114. We have no lord.

  115. We have no master,

  116. but Caesar himself.

  117. They hated Caesar.

  118. They are jealous

  119. that more and more people

  120. are turning their allegiance to Jesus.

  121. And so they wanted him dead.

  122. They are told quite clearly by Pilate

  123. that he's innocent.

  124. Pilate offers us to release him

  125. in verse 29,

  126. verse 39,

  127. and they demand instead

  128. the release of a convicted criminal.

  129. Barabbas,

  130. much more than some translations say

  131. he was a robber.

  132. He was much more than a robber.

  133. He's guilty of insurrection.

  134. He has led an uprising

  135. against the Roman Empire.

  136. He wanted to be king himself

  137. and he's got blood on his hands.

  138. He committed murder in the process.

  139. The soldiers here treat Jesus

  140. as a comic figure to be ridiculed,

  141. nothing more than a swear word

  142. when things don't go white.

  143. Pilate does what politicians

  144. the world overdo.

  145. He knew Jesus was innocent

  146. and at the end of the day

  147. his reputation was more

  148. that was things

  149. that was on the line for him.

  150. That's the thing

  151. that he cared about.

  152. When expedience demanded otherwise,

  153. he caved in.

  154. He abandoned principle

  155. for popularity.

  156. He's a people pleaser.

  157. He knew what truth is

  158. but showed he hated truth

  159. and sided with a false head

  160. because truth was going to cost him too much.

  161. John is trying to help us see here

  162. if we were there,

  163. we would have joined in too.

  164. That's what John wants us to see.

  165. You and I are as guilty as they.

  166. And the dark secret

  167. that is being pointed to here

  168. is that it was the wickedness of humanity

  169. that resulted in the death of Jesus.

  170. There is something in every one of us

  171. that is unable to side with truth

  172. and righteousness

  173. at the crucial moments in life.

  174. You see, the death of Jesus

  175. reveals the deepest, darkest secrets of us all.

  176. John mentioned it really clearly

  177. back in chapter 3, verse 19.

  178. This is the verdict,

  179. talking about Jesus.

  180. Light has come into the world

  181. of all the world

  182. of all the world views

  183. that exist in our world.

  184. The Christian faith presents

  185. the most negative of the human condition.

  186. The most negative.

  187. Another part of the New Testament

  188. puts it like this.

  189. Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  190. As for you,

  191. you were dead

  192. in your transgressions and sins

  193. in which you used to live

  194. when you followed the ways of this world

  195. and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air,

  196. the spirit who is now at work

  197. in those who are disobedient,

  198. all of us who lived among them

  199. at one time,

  200. gratifying the cravings of our flesh

  201. and following its desires and thoughts.

  202. That's the human condition.

  203. Spiritually dead.

  204. Not dying, not crippled.

  205. Dead.

  206. Unable to do anything

  207. to help ourselves.

  208. And it's universal.

  209. All, it says there.

  210. He's not describing here

  211. some decadent, depraved segment

  212. of society,

  213. but all of humanity

  214. from top to bottom.

  215. All, spiritually dead

  216. apart from Jesus.

  217. What does it mean

  218. to be dead in transgressions and sins?

  219. Well, I would suggest here

  220. from Ephesians 2,

  221. it means to be enslaved.

  222. Notice the word followed there

  223. in verse 2 and verse 3.

  224. The word means mastered

  225. to be controlled by something.

  226. The reason we are dead

  227. in transgressions and sins

  228. is that we are as helpless

  229. as a dead body.

  230. Completely controlled.

  231. Completely mastered.

  232. Unable to move.

  233. Unable to act on our own.

  234. The key idea,

  235. it's there in verse 3,

  236. gratifying the cravings

  237. of our flesh

  238. and following its desires

  239. and thoughts.

  240. The term our flesh

  241. in verse 3

  242. is literally referring to

  243. not bones and skin and stuff,

  244. but it's referring to

  245. self-centered human nature.

  246. That's the thing that drives us.

  247. That's the thing that masters us

  248. and controls us.

  249. According to the Bible,

  250. the reason we are dead

  251. in transgressions and sins,

  252. the reason we are slaves to sin,

  253. the reason we are bound by sin,

  254. is because the human heart

  255. is profoundly centered upon itself

  256. and not its creator.

  257. The 16th century church reformer

  258. and theologian Martin Luther

  259. put the condition of the heart

  260. quite succinctly.

  261. He described it

  262. as curved in on itself.

  263. Luther said that our nature

  264. is so deeply curved in on itself

  265. that it wickedly,

  266. curvedly,

  267. and viciously

  268. seeks to use

  269. all things

  270. and all people,

  271. even God himself,

  272. for its own sake.

  273. Now it's pretty obvious

  274. when you listen to that statement

  275. from Luther

  276. that self-centeredness

  277. can make you into a cruel person.

  278. It's not hard to identify

  279. the dictators,

  280. the tyrants in history.

  281. They want to get things done their way

  282. and they'll do whatever it takes,

  283. even immoral things,

  284. in order to make sure

  285. that they consistently stay on top.

  286. What is less obvious for us

  287. is that self-centeredness

  288. also makes us,

  289. for the majority of us,

  290. moral people.

  291. If everything is about

  292. my need to feel good about myself,

  293. there's no better way

  294. to feel good about yourself

  295. than to be a good person.

  296. Self-centeredness

  297. drives most people

  298. into being good,

  299. trying hard to serve the needy,

  300. being a good child

  301. to a parent

  302. or a good parent

  303. to children,

  304. a good friend

  305. that is always there

  306. to assist

  307. whenever I'm needed.

  308. What lies beneath

  309. all of that

  310. is a self-centeredness

  311. where the driving motive

  312. of the heart

  313. is I am trying

  314. to make myself

  315. feel good.

  316. I want to receive

  317. the applause

  318. of others

  319. or I want to fill

  320. this aching void

  321. in my heart.

  322. But here's the other one

  323. for us.

  324. Self-centeredness

  325. could also make you

  326. quite a religious person.

  327. We can devote ourselves

  328. to obeying God

  329. and turning up to church,

  330. reading the Bible,

  331. praying,

  332. giving and doing

  333. the sort of things

  334. that we are doing

  335. right now.

  336. Did you see the irony

  337. and the hypocrisy

  338. at the beginning

  339. of what was just read out

  340. to us by Aidan?

  341. Chapter 18,

  342. verse 28,

  343. the religious leaders

  344. won't go into the palace,

  345. a Gentile palace.

  346. They wanted to hand

  347. Jesus over

  348. to the Gentiles

  349. so that they could

  350. rush off to church.

  351. You kill him,

  352. we've got some

  353. ceremonies to do,

  354. we've got some

  355. religion to practice.

  356. Their lives are about

  357. rules in order

  358. to please God,

  359. all good and right

  360. things to do.

  361. Religion is about

  362. doing good things

  363. and expecting God

  364. to come through

  365. for you

  366. in the way

  367. you want him to.

  368. Religion puts you

  369. at the centre

  370. and leaves God

  371. to one side.

  372. It's so ironic

  373. that so many people

  374. even get into

  375. the Christian faith

  376. in order to have

  377. God serve them

  378. rather than

  379. for them to serve God.

  380. How do you know?

  381. When things don't

  382. work out,

  383. before them too,

  384. you draw back

  385. from God.

  386. And yet Christianity

  387. is the only

  388. world religion

  389. that has

  390. as a central

  391. belief,

  392. we don't do

  393. anything for salvation,

  394. he's done it all

  395. for us.

  396. And self-centeredness

  397. clicks to every

  398. aspect of your

  399. life.

  400. life.

  401. And if you see

  402. any of it in your

  403. heart,

  404. it's a revelation

  405. of just deeply

  406. how wicked

  407. the human heart

  408. is.

  409. C.S. Lewis,

  410. the Oxford

  411. professor and author,

  412. wrote,

  413. there is nothing

  414. more enslaving

  415. and miserable

  416. than self-centeredness.

  417. He wrote that

  418. it is hell

  419. which has begun

  420. in us

  421. that will

  422. ultimately

  423. take us

  424. to hell.

  425. So why did

  426. Jesus have

  427. to die?

  428. Because of the

  429. wickedness of

  430. humanity.

  431. And we need to

  432. see ourselves

  433. in this narrative.

  434. But secondly,

  435. Jesus also

  436. died because of

  437. the will

  438. and the purpose

  439. of God.

  440. The narrative

  441. of John's

  442. gospel is

  443. that Jesus

  444. suffered as

  445. God's royal

  446. king and

  447. that it was

  448. God's intention

  449. for Jesus

  450. to die

  451. on the cross.

  452. That is,

  453. the crucifixion

  454. of Jesus

  455. is not a

  456. travesty

  457. of justice

  458. or he was

  459. in the wrong

  460. place at the

  461. wrong time.

  462. It was no

  463. mere accident

  464. of human

  465. history.

  466. It was the

  467. climactic hour.

  468. It was the

  469. crowning purpose,

  470. the moment

  471. of Jesus'

  472. glory and

  473. of God's

  474. glory.

  475. That's what

  476. it was.

  477. In John

  478. 12,

  479. he speaks

  480. of the

  481. hour of

  482. his death

  483. and he

  484. indicates

  485. that he

  486. will be

  487. lifted up

  488. on a

  489. cross

  490. for which

  491. he says

  492. will be

  493. the hour

  494. of my

  495. glory.

  496. It will

  497. be the

  498. moment

  499. where the

  500. magnificence

  501. and the

  502. beauty

  503. and the

  504. worth

  505. and the

  506. character

  507. of God

  508. would be

  509. on full

  510. display.

  511. It's going

  512. to go

  513. viral in

  514. this moment.

  515. You want

  516. to know

  517. who God

  518. is?

  519. You will

  520. see him

  521. on a

  522. cross.

  523. You want

  524. to know

  525. what he's

  526. like?

  527. You'll

  528. see him

  529. on a

  530. cross.

  531. John

  532. 13,

  533. he washes

  534. the feet

  535. of his

  536. disciples

  537. and tells

  538. them that

  539. he will

  540. die out

  541. of love

  542. for the

  543. whole

  544. world.

  545. John

  546. 17,

  547. as he

  548. speaks

  549. of his

  550. death,

  551. he declares

  552. again,

  553. it will be

  554. the hour

  555. of his

  556. glory.

  557. John

  558. 18,

  559. as the

  560. soldiers

  561. come to

  562. arrest him,

  563. the soldiers

  564. themselves,

  565. did you notice

  566. this last

  567. week?

  568. The soldiers

  569. themselves,

  570. when he

  571. says,

  572. I am the

  573. one you're

  574. looking for,

  575. they bowed

  576. down in

  577. front of him

  578. immediately.

  579. Get up,

  580. guys,

  581. you've got to

  582. arrest me.

  583. That's what

  584. you're here

  585. for.

  586. he shows

  587. himself to

  588. be one

  589. of absolute

  590. authority

  591. over all,

  592. including the

  593. arresting

  594. party.

  595. And yet,

  596. he allows

  597. them to

  598. bind him.

  599. And as we

  600. just read in

  601. John 19,

  602. Jesus says

  603. to Pilate,

  604. you have no

  605. power over

  606. me if it

  607. were not

  608. given to

  609. you from

  610. above.

  611. Pilate,

  612. the

  613. representative

  614. of the

  615. largest

  616. empire,

  617. the most

  618. powerful

  619. empire in

  620. the world

  621. at the

  622. time.

  623. As you

  624. read through

  625. the Gospels,

  626. you see

  627. again and

  628. again that

  629. Jesus heads

  630. to his

  631. death,

  632. knowing it

  633. is the

  634. purpose and

  635. the will

  636. of God.

  637. It was

  638. the deliberate

  639. desire of

  640. God throughout

  641. history that

  642. his son,

  643. Jesus,

  644. would come

  645. into his

  646. creation and

  647. suffer and

  648. die and

  649. rise and

  650. reign.

  651. It was no

  652. mistake.

  653. It wasn't a

  654. tragedy.

  655. God's intention

  656. was for his

  657. glory to be

  658. displayed through

  659. the wicked

  660. plans of

  661. humanity to

  662. nail Jesus

  663. upon a

  664. Roman cross.

  665. In chapter

  666. 19,

  667. verse 5,

  668. Pilate thought

  669. Jesus was a

  670. joke,

  671. made a

  672. spectacle,

  673. dressed him

  674. up.

  675. And when

  676. he brought

  677. Jesus,

  678. when Jesus

  679. came out

  680. wearing the

  681. crown of

  682. thorns and

  683. the purple

  684. robe,

  685. Pilate said

  686. to them,

  687. to the

  688. gathering

  689. crowd,

  690. not,

  691. here's your

  692. man,

  693. here is

  694. the man.

  695. Definite

  696. article,

  697. the man.

  698. Pilate's

  699. mocking Jesus

  700. to the

  701. crowd,

  702. dressed up

  703. with all

  704. these fake

  705. robe,

  706. look at

  707. the man,

  708. the

  709. quintessential

  710. human being.

  711. And then

  712. in verses

  713. 13 and

  714. 14,

  715. the drama

  716. concludes,

  717. out on the

  718. pavement,

  719. Pilate takes

  720. the official

  721. seat,

  722. declaring his

  723. judgment on

  724. behalf of the

  725. Roman Empire,

  726. and what

  727. comes out of

  728. his mouth?

  729. your king.

  730. Not this

  731. pathetic loser,

  732. your king.

  733. At every

  734. point here,

  735. Jesus is in

  736. control.

  737. We are told

  738. his final

  739. pronouncement

  740. came at

  741. the sixth

  742. hour, that

  743. is Pilate's

  744. final pronouncement,

  745. on the eve

  746. of the

  747. Passover,

  748. the very

  749. hour,

  750. the very

  751. hour that

  752. the priest

  753. began to

  754. slaughter the

  755. Paschal

  756. lambs,

  757. the Passover

  758. lambs at

  759. the temple.

  760. Jesus,

  761. the king of

  762. the Jews,

  763. the son of

  764. God,

  765. the lamb

  766. of God,

  767. who takes

  768. away the

  769. sin of

  770. the world,

  771. timed his

  772. condemnation to

  773. his death

  774. and to

  775. death

  776. perfectly.

  777. God's

  778. will be

  779. saved.

  780. They were

  781. all

  782. poor

  783. in God's

  784. great drama

  785. to save

  786. the world.

  787. As 1 Timothy

  788. tells us,

  789. here is a

  790. trustworthy

  791. saying that

  792. deserves full

  793. acceptance.

  794. Christ Jesus

  795. came into the

  796. world to save

  797. sinners.

  798. Jesus died

  799. because of the

  800. wickedness of

  801. humanity.

  802. He died

  803. because of

  804. the will

  805. of God.

  806. Yet those

  807. two observations

  808. don't get to

  809. the deepest

  810. answer.

  811. The

  812. willingness of

  813. Jesus out

  814. of love for

  815. humanity.

  816. To get to the

  817. heart of the

  818. issue, I want

  819. to turn to a

  820. passage in the

  821. first part of

  822. the Bible.

  823. It's

  824. repeatedly

  825. pointed to

  826. for an

  827. explanation of

  828. Jesus'

  829. death.

  830. Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  831. chapter 53.

  832. It's

  833. writing, this

  834. is Isaiah,

  835. seven centuries

  836. before the

  837. crucifixion of

  838. Jesus.

  839. Isaiah 53

    Isaiah 53:4

  840. verse 4.

  841. Surely he

  842. took up our

  843. pain and

  844. bore our

  845. suffering, yet

  846. we considered

  847. him punished

  848. by God,

  849. stricken by

  850. him and

  851. afflicted.

  852. He was

  853. pierced for

  854. our

  855. transgressions,

  856. he was

  857. crushed for

  858. our iniquities.

  859. The punishment

  860. that brought

  861. us peace

  862. was on

  863. him and

  864. by his

  865. wounds we

  866. are healed.

  867. We all

  868. like sheep

  869. have gone

  870. astray, but

  871. each has

  872. turned to

  873. our own

  874. way and

  875. the Lord

  876. has laid

  877. on him

  878. the iniquity

  879. of us

  880. all.

  881. What we

  882. have in

  883. Isaiah 53

  884. is

  885. substitutionary

  886. language.

  887. Did you

  888. see it?

  889. Pierced

  890. for our

  891. transgressions,

  892. crushed for

  893. our

  894. iniquities.

  895. The

  896. punishment

  897. that's

  898. brought us

  899. peace was

  900. on him

  901. and by

  902. his wounds

  903. we are

  904. healed.

  905. The Lord

  906. has laid

  907. on him

  908. the iniquity

  909. of us

  910. all.

  911. And did

  912. you see

  913. the language

  914. of God's

  915. purposes and

  916. plan in

  917. this?

  918. Yet we

  919. considered him

  920. punished by

  921. God, stricken

  922. by him and

  923. afflicted.

  924. We all,

  925. that is you

  926. and me as

  927. well, like

  928. sheep have

  929. gone astray,

  930. each to his

  931. own, turned

  932. to our own

  933. way, and

  934. the Lord

  935. has laid

  936. on him

  937. the iniquity

  938. of us

  939. all.

  940. The word

  941. transgression

  942. is a word

  943. that means

  944. willful

  945. rebellion

  946. against God.

  947. Iniquity

  948. is a word

  949. that means

  950. to bend,

  951. to bend

  952. over, to

  953. contort.

  954. It's referring

  955. to the

  956. brokenness

  957. of humanity.

  958. Jesus is

  959. carrying

  960. God's

  961. just

  962. punishment,

  963. his just

  964. judgment

  965. for our

  966. human

  967. rebellion

  968. and iniquity

  969. and sin

  970. to the

  971. cross.

  972. That is

  973. Jesus'

  974. trades place

  975. with us.

  976. When

  977. John

  978. first points

  979. to the

  980. person of

  981. Jesus,

  982. as he

  983. comes,

  984. the very

  985. first time

  986. he gets

  987. to identify

  988. the person

  989. of Jesus

  990. in this

  991. gospel.

  992. In chapter

  993. one, he

  994. says,

  995. behold,

  996. the Lamb

  997. of God

  998. who takes

  999. away the

  1000. sin of the

  1001. world.

  1002. That is a

  1003. reference to

  1004. this passage

  1005. in Isaiah

  1006. where Jesus

  1007. likened to

  1008. the sheep

  1009. going to

  1010. the slaughter.

  1011. He takes

  1012. upon himself

  1013. God's

  1014. judgment

  1015. for our

  1016. sin.

  1017. Jesus,

  1018. fully God,

  1019. fully man,

  1020. Jesus,

  1021. having lived

  1022. a perfect

  1023. life,

  1024. goes to

  1025. death on

  1026. a cross

  1027. and carries

  1028. God's

  1029. just judgment

  1030. for every

  1031. wrong,

  1032. every wrong

  1033. thing that you

  1034. and I have

  1035. ever done

  1036. or thought

  1037. and also

  1038. for all the

  1039. right things

  1040. that we have

  1041. failed to

  1042. do,

  1043. such as

  1044. love the

  1045. Lord your

  1046. God with

  1047. all your

  1048. heart,

  1049. soul and

  1050. mind.

  1051. And we

  1052. get a glimpse

  1053. of what he

  1054. does for us

  1055. in this

  1056. passage.

  1057. He trades

  1058. place with

  1059. Barabbas.

  1060. Barabbas was

  1061. the only man

  1062. in history

  1063. who could

  1064. ever see,

  1065. say,

  1066. Jesus has

  1067. taken my

  1068. place

  1069. physically.

  1070. But in

  1071. that,

  1072. we're

  1073. revealed here

  1074. that Jesus

  1075. takes our

  1076. place

  1077. spiritually.

  1078. Barabbas was

  1079. condemned to

  1080. die and he

  1081. was set

  1082. free.

  1083. I'm the

  1084. one who

  1085. deserves to

  1086. be on that

  1087. cross.

  1088. I'm the

  1089. one who

  1090. deserves God's

  1091. just anger.

  1092. I deserve

  1093. eternal

  1094. punishment for

  1095. my rebellion

  1096. against God.

  1097. And Jesus

  1098. instead was

  1099. delivered up

  1100. for my

  1101. offenses.

  1102. He was

  1103. handed over

  1104. to judgment

  1105. for my

  1106. sin.

  1107. Jesus

  1108. Christ is

  1109. my

  1110. substitute.

  1111. He was

  1112. satisfying

  1113. the debt

  1114. of divine

  1115. justice and

  1116. holiness.

  1117. The

  1118. innocent

  1119. one was

  1120. bound

  1121. and now

  1122. to the

  1123. cross.

  1124. condemned

  1125. to death

  1126. so that

  1127. the guilty

  1128. one deserving

  1129. of death

  1130. might go

  1131. free.

  1132. It's why

  1133. John 3

  1134. 16 is

  1135. the most

  1136. famous of

  1137. Bible verses

  1138. in this

  1139. world.

  1140. God so

  1141. loved the

  1142. world that

  1143. he gave

  1144. his one

  1145. and only

  1146. son that

  1147. whoever

  1148. believes in

  1149. him shall

  1150. not perish

  1151. but have

  1152. eternal life.

  1153. For God

  1154. did not send

  1155. his son into

  1156. the world to

  1157. condemn the

  1158. world but to

  1159. save the

  1160. world through

  1161. him.

  1162. Such is

  1163. love.

  1164. The

  1165. wickedness of

  1166. humanity,

  1167. the will of

  1168. God,

  1169. the willingness

  1170. of Jesus

  1171. out of

  1172. love,

  1173. declares

  1174. that you

  1175. and I

  1176. are more

  1177. sinful and

  1178. deserving of

  1179. wrath,

  1180. more deeply

  1181. broken and

  1182. damaged than

  1183. we would ever

  1184. allow ourselves

  1185. to contemplate.

  1186. And yet at

  1187. the same time

  1188. we are more

  1189. loved and

  1190. affirmed than

  1191. we could ever

  1192. possibly dream.
