  1. Welcome everyone. My name's Steve. I haven't met you before. I'd be grateful if you had your Bibles

  2. open to that section. We are working our way through the early chapters of the book of Genesis.

  3. We'll be lingering in these chapters for a couple of weeks. So it'd be great if you had your Bibles

  4. open. And also the St. Paul's app will give you an outline for today's message. The song Friday

  5. On My Mind was released in 1966 by the Australian band The Easy Beats. It sat at position number one

  6. on the list of Australia's all-time favourite songs for over four decades. And the reason for that,

  7. according to those who study such things, is it catches something of the mindset of Australian

  8. culture. On Monday, I've got Friday on my mind. That is, the day I start working, I can't wait

  9. to finish working. I think about the day when I stop working. Early retirement, in fact, in our culture

  10. is the ultimate thing to aspire to. It's even an idol in our culture, because anything is better

  11. than having to work. And so what we're going to do today in this text is look at a couple of the key

  12. words that keep coming up in Genesis 1 and 2, the key words of work and rest. And I think it's a

  13. subject that's relevant for many of us today. There used to be such a thing called the 40-hour work week.

  14. Unless, of course, you worked for the government, it was 38 hours. True, I used to work for the government

  15. once upon a time, 38 hours. And so it's like, what happened to that? The rhythms, there used to be a

  16. rhythm, if you like. And even in ministry, when I first started ministry 30 years ago, there was this

  17. rhythm of work, rest, and play, and that almost doesn't exist anymore. What's happened? What's

  18. going on? Families and communities are suffering because of a culture of work in our society. So

  19. I've got three points on the app, called to work, how to work, and working well. So called to work.

  20. As part of the image bearing that we see there in the creation, people are called to work. God

  21. himself works. Genesis 2.2. By the seventh day, God had finished the work he'd been doing, and on the

  22. seventh day, he rested from all his work. God works. And although we read there that God ceased his

  23. creating activity on the seventh day of creation, we are told in John 5.17 that God continues to work.

  24. He still works. In fact, as the Lord of creation who upholds everything by the power of his word,

  25. if he ever ceased to work, everything we know now would dissolve into nothingness.

  26. He continues to uphold the universe as it is. And so this is an amazing statement here.

  27. What is so amazing about Genesis 2.2?

  28. In creation accounts of Eastern culture, for instance, the Babylonian creation account,

  29. probably the most famous Eastern creation account, called Eluma Elish,

  30. humanity is created as a primitive, lowly creature for the purpose of laboring to keep the world going

  31. so that the gods don't have to do anything. That's why humanity was created.

  32. And for creation accounts like Eluma Elish, work is considered bad, primitive, terrible.

  33. The divines don't work.

  34. On the other hand, on the creation accounts in Western culture, like those of Greco-Roman culture,

  35. the most famous of Greco-Roman culture creation account is Pandora's box.

  36. Zeus gives Pandora this box. It was actually a jar, really, but it's become known as a box.

  37. And Zeus says, open it. And she opens it.

  38. And what comes out of the Pandora's box is all this bad stuff.

  39. Death, disease, decay, and work.

  40. And so in the Greek myths, work is bad.

  41. Eastern and Western, work is bad.

  42. And Genesis 1 is the opposite.

  43. Work is good.

  44. Genesis tells us that work is something that our creator God actually does.

  45. It is something good.

  46. In chapter 2, verse 7, we read,

  47. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground

  48. and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.

  49. The man became a living being.

  50. I said last week that the book of Genesis, before anything else,

  51. it is about God.

  52. It is the beginning of the doctrine of God.

  53. First and foremost, his name, God is referred to 35 times in the first chapter.

  54. And there is something really interesting that we note here about God.

  55. Up to this point in Genesis, Moses has used the name Elohim for the name of God.

  56. Up to this point.

  57. It's a name that portrays God's majesty as the creator of all that is.

  58. It signifies a omnipotent deity.

  59. But from chapter 2, verse 4, which technically is actually the beginning of chapter 2.

  60. We won't get into that.

  61. The guy who originally put the chapter headings in the Bible,

  62. because it never used to have chapter headings.

  63. It wasn't written with chapter headings.

  64. And when he put the chapter headings in, the guy who did that,

  65. apparently did it on horseback.

  66. So, you know, we're cutting some slack here.

  67. Chapter 2, verse 4, the name of God switches to Yahweh Elohim,

  68. the Lord God.

  69. And so from chapter 2, verse 4, to the end of chapter 4,

  70. the dominant name for God is Yahweh Elohim.

  71. And it's a combination of the creator God and the covenant-keeping relational God.

  72. And the God of Genesis, therefore, is not a distant, cruel, angry God

  73. who creates primitive beings to do his labor.

  74. He is a God who is powerful but very good.

  75. He is a God who is humble and gentle of heart.

  76. And we get a glimpse of that, the first glimpse of it, in chapter 2, verse 7.

  77. This is such an interesting contrast to Greek philosophical thinking,

  78. which says manual work is bad.

  79. Manual work is a curse.

  80. Manual work is a punishment.

  81. Chapter 2, verse 7,

  82. God stoops down into the soil and forms man.

  83. This God is a God who's got dirt under his fingertips.

  84. Humanity is the apex of God's creation,

  85. creating the image of God.

  86. According to verses 26 and 28 of chapter 1,

  87. we are his image bearers,

  88. and part of our purpose as his image bearers

  89. is to rule the created order.

  90. We are God's royal figures,

  91. his vicegerents over creation.

  92. We exercise a delegated power on behalf of our God.

  93. And then from verse 8,

  94. we see in verse 2 that God is the God who plants the garden.

  95. And then he puts Adam in it and tells him to be the gardener.

  96. All work, including manual work,

  97. is part of paradise.

  98. And all work is held up as good.

  99. It is part of God's good creation.

  100. This is so different than the way we think of things in our world.

  101. For instance, in communist ideology,

  102. professionals are disdained.

  103. Manual workers are disdained in capitalism.

  104. But in biblical Christianity,

  105. all work is good,

  106. and all work has dignity.

  107. So then how should we work?

  108. That's my second point.

  109. I want to touch briefly on three practical things

  110. on how we should go about our work.

  111. Really simply, look in,

  112. look out, look up.

  113. That's really the three points, really briefly.

  114. This is how we go about our work

  115. and what the Bible says about the nature of things.

  116. So look in,

  117. that is, look into what you're gifted to.

  118. Take a look at chapter 1, verse 26.

  119. Then God said,

  120. let us make mankind in our image,

  121. in our likeness,

  122. so that they may rule.

  123. God's image is that he is the creator

  124. and ruler of all that he's made.

  125. And so he makes humanity in his image

  126. and he makes us rulers of all that he's made.

  127. We are all made in the image of our creator

  128. and so we create.

  129. The Hebrew word for God creating

  130. in Genesis 1 and Genesis 2

  131. is that he creates out of nothing.

  132. That's his creative work.

  133. Ex nilio.

  134. It is out of nothing.

  135. Nothing exists and he creates.

  136. And that's used three times

  137. in Genesis 1 and 2, that word.

  138. Three times.

  139. All referring to God's creating work.

  140. But there's a heap of other words

  141. that are used in Genesis 1 and 2.

  142. Words like form, make, separate, shape.

  143. And they are used of both God and people.

  144. So the truest sense of our humanity's creating work

  145. is to make,

  146. is to sub-create, if you like.

  147. God's creative work

  148. is to make something entirely new

  149. from no matter at all

  150. and only God can do that.

  151. To sub-create is to make something relatively new

  152. using existing material.

  153. And sub-creating is what the spirit does

  154. in chapter 1 verse 2.

  155. Hovering over the empty matter

  156. and bringing order from chaos,

  157. newness out of unformed material.

  158. And every human being,

  159. in some way,

  160. has a desire to reflect

  161. that work of God.

  162. It might be developing a product.

  163. It might be starting a business.

  164. It might be creating a piece of,

  165. or sub-creating a piece of art.

  166. It might be turning around

  167. a dysfunctional work team

  168. or a dysfunctional partner,

  169. a department,

  170. or a dysfunctional organisation.

  171. It might be an educator

  172. bringing out the potential in a student,

  173. a medical professional

  174. bringing order to a broken body,

  175. a therapist bringing order to a broken mind.

  176. I could go on and on and on and on and on.

  177. A mother changing,

  178. or a father actually,

  179. I don't want to get,

  180. changing a nappy.

  181. Changing a nappy to bring disorder

  182. from this mess.

  183. You could go on.

  184. It could be bringing order

  185. to gardens and buildings

  186. and people's hair and clothing

  187. and raising.

  188. I mean, you just go on bringing.

  189. That is the work of sub-creating.

  190. As I mentioned last week,

  191. in Greek philosophy,

  192. divides the world

  193. into the spiritual being good

  194. and the physical being bad.

  195. It is not biblical Christianity at all.

  196. There is something very physical

  197. about the work of spiritual work

  198. that I do.

  199. And there is something deeply spiritual

  200. about the physical work you do.

  201. And I do.

  202. God does not divide

  203. between the secular and the sacred.

  204. It is not biblical Christianity

  205. to do that.

  206. So as a Christian,

  207. if you are not well,

  208. pray to God about your sickness

  209. and go to the doctor.

  210. And go to the doctor.

  211. You are not being super spiritual.

  212. You are not being more spiritual.

  213. You're not being more mature

  214. by not going to the doctor.

  215. If your car breaks down,

  216. pray about it,

  217. but call a mechanic.

  218. God has gifted humanity

  219. for the work

  220. of bringing order

  221. out of chaos.

  222. That's his job.

  223. That is our job.

  224. So look into how God has gifted you

  225. in that space.

  226. I am so deeply thankful

  227. for the people who bring order

  228. in my life

  229. amongst the chaos

  230. in all kinds of way.

  231. The legal professionals

  232. who jump in

  233. when there's legal disorder.

  234. for Craig,

  235. sitting over here,

  236. the work that he does,

  237. most of us

  238. are not even aware of.

  239. We get to sit in an ordered building

  240. because of this guy.

  241. We get to enjoy

  242. ordered grounds

  243. because of this guy.

  244. You ought to be praising

  245. his work as much as mine.

  246. Or more,

  247. if you don't praise mine at all.

  248. Look out

  249. is the second point

  250. to a world around you

  251. and give the world

  252. what it needs to have.

  253. Chapter 2, verse 15,

  254. the Lord God took the man

  255. and put him in the garden of Eden

  256. to work and take care of it.

  257. To take care of it,

  258. not to abuse it,

  259. not to exploit it,

  260. not to use it.

  261. And this is the issue

  262. of stewardship.

  263. We are stewards

  264. of God's resources.

  265. We are stewards

  266. of God's gifts

  267. that he's given us

  268. for a higher purpose.

  269. our own glorification

  270. but for the creating of order

  271. in society,

  272. in his world.

  273. You see,

  274. the first point

  275. of looking in

  276. to see how God gives me

  277. really does suit

  278. the Western individual

  279. mindset really well.

  280. Thanks for that, Steve.

  281. Let's finish the sermon there.

  282. But this one

  283. about the rest of the...

  284. Not so much.

  285. And this is the balance.

  286. work

  287. is not just

  288. about using

  289. my gifts

  290. and fulfilling me.

  291. It is about

  292. working for the good

  293. of others.

  294. So the biblical view

  295. of work

  296. is we are stewards

  297. of the world

  298. and the people

  299. around us.

  300. How is my work

  301. in contributing

  302. to the advancement

  303. of society?

  304. How is it contributing

  305. to the advancement

  306. of society?

  307. That's a question

  308. for you

  309. before you go

  310. to work tomorrow morning.

  311. Or if you're not sure,

  312. ask me,

  313. I can tell you.

  314. In one way or another,

  315. it's really...

  316. I mean,

  317. it's clear.

  318. I mean,

  319. my optometrist

  320. over here

  321. helps me to see things

  322. so I can write sermons

  323. and read.

  324. Get a greater glimpse

  325. of the world.

  326. Bringing order

  327. out of chaos.

  328. The last one

  329. is to look up

  330. to the one

  331. who has called you.

  332. There is to be

  333. a sense of mission

  334. or purpose

  335. to our work.

  336. Ephesians 2.10,

  337. we are God's

  338. handiwork

  339. created in Christ Jesus

  340. to do good works

  341. which God prepared

  342. in advance

  343. for us to do.

  344. The Christian perspective

  345. on work

  346. is that if we look in

  347. and see the way

  348. God has gifted us,

  349. if we look out

  350. to make a difference

  351. to those gifts

  352. in the wider world

  353. to bring order

  354. to chaos,

  355. then we know

  356. ultimately

  357. that God

  358. will use that work.

  359. And if we work

  360. like this,

  361. we will be content

  362. with our vocation

  363. in life.

  364. But we need

  365. all three things

  366. together.

  367. All three of them.

  368. And that moves me

  369. here to the final point.

  370. Because what I've just

  371. said can seem

  372. so unrealistic.

  373. There is certainly

  374. truth in that thought.

  375. Frankly,

  376. for me personally,

  377. I have a job

  378. that ticks

  379. all the boxes

  380. for me.

  381. My vocation

  382. in life

  383. ticks all the boxes

  384. for me.

  385. But even so,

  386. every single job,

  387. every single vocation

  388. can be

  389. unbelievably

  390. frustrating.

  391. And at times

  392. crushing.

  393. And filled

  394. with all kinds

  395. of difficulty

  396. and anxieties.

  397. I fully understand

  398. that our work

  399. can hurt us.

  400. It can drain us.

  401. It is so frustrating.

  402. And yet,

  403. we haven't got

  404. to the rest

  405. of the Bible yet,

  406. which is so realistic

  407. about this.

  408. Work will never

  409. be the good

  410. it was created

  411. to be

  412. unless we see

  413. that

  414. what we need

  415. in our hearts

  416. in order

  417. to work well.

  418. So let's move

  419. to the third point

  420. on working well.

  421. What we need

  422. in our hearts

  423. to work well

  424. is rest.

  425. That's what we need.

  426. Genesis 2,

  427. 2-3.

  428. By the seventh day,

  429. God had finished

  430. the work

  431. he had been doing.

  432. And so on the seventh day,

  433. he rested

  434. from all his work.

  435. Then God

  436. blessed the seventh day

  437. and made it holy

  438. because on it

  439. he rested

  440. from all

  441. the work

  442. of creating

  443. that he had done.

  444. God finished

  445. his work

  446. and he rested.

  447. It is the only

  448. day of creation

  449. that God blesses.

  450. He made

  451. the seventh day

  452. holy.

  453. That means

  454. it's been set apart

  455. and it's been set apart

  456. for us.

  457. Unlike

  458. the previous

  459. six days,

  460. the number

  461. of the day

  462. of this particular day,

  463. day seven,

  464. is repeated

  465. three times

  466. in Genesis 2

  467. and 3.

  468. Chapter 2,

  469. 2 or 3.

  470. The seventh day

  471. stands

  472. apart

  473. in

  474. solidary

  475. grandeur

  476. as the crown

  477. to the six days

  478. of creating.

  479. God's rest

  480. here

  481. is one

  482. of deep

  483. pleasure

  484. and satisfaction

  485. at the fruit

  486. of his labor.

  487. From the beginning

  488. of creation,

  489. the seventh day

  490. was central

  491. not only

  492. to creation

  493. but to the

  494. ultimate

  495. destiny

  496. of all

  497. of humanity.

  498. We can read

  499. in these

  500. two chapters

  501. a rhythm

  502. of work

  503. and rest

  504. and it's

  505. certainly good

  506. for all people

  507. to practice it.

  508. But the Bible

  509. tells us

  510. there's more

  511. to this rest

  512. than is

  513. immediately

  514. obvious

  515. here.

  516. Immediately

  517. obvious.

  518. if we

  519. truly

  520. want to

  521. be able

  522. to work

  523. as we

  524. have seen

  525. here

  526. then we

  527. need to

  528. have a

  529. truly

  530. Sabbath

  531. rest,

  532. a deep

  533. Sabbath

  534. rest.

  535. Let's just

  536. dig a little

  537. bit deeper

  538. on that.

  539. Psalm 95

  540. is all

  541. about worship.

  542. Psalm 95

  543. all about worship.

  544. At the end

  545. of the

  546. psalm

  547. we read

  548. something

  549. that's a

  550. little

  551. unusual.

  552. I'll

  553. paraphrase

  554. it a

  555. little bit

  556. for us.

  557. Hear

  558. his voice.

  559. Do not

  560. harden

  561. your hearts

  562. as your

  563. ancestors

  564. did.

  565. So I

  566. declared

  567. on oath

  568. in my

  569. anger

  570. they shall

  571. never

  572. enter

  573. my

  574. rest.

  575. It's all

  576. about worship

  577. and God

  578. says

  579. they have

  580. rejected

  581. me and

  582. therefore

  583. they will

  584. never

  585. enter

  586. rest.

  587. It

  588. doesn't

  589. end there

  590. though.

  591. If you

  592. go further

  593. into the

  594. Bible

  595. Hebrews

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  596. chapter

  597. 3 and

  598. 4

  599. it says

  600. there

  601. that there

  602. is still

  603. a rest

  604. for the

  605. people of

  606. God.

  607. What's

  608. that all

  609. about?

  610. Well

  611. jump back

  612. into Psalm

    Psalms 3:5

  613. chapter 3

  614. verses 5

  615. and 6

  616. this is

  617. David

  618. I

  619. lie

  620. down

  621. and

  622. sleep

  623. I

  624. wake

  625. again

  626. because

  627. the

  628. Lord

  629. has

  630. sustained

  631. me

  632. throughout

  633. my

  634. sleep

  635. I

  636. will

  637. not

  638. fear

  639. though

  640. tens

  641. of

  642. thousands

  643. assail

  644. me

  645. on

  646. every

  647. side.

  648. So here's

  649. David

  650. saying

  651. I am

  652. surrounded

  653. by tens

  654. of thousands

  655. of enemies

  656. and I'm

  657. sleeping

  658. like a

  659. baby.

  660. Apologies

  661. if your

  662. baby

  663. does not

  664. sleep

  665. that

  666. well.

  667. The

  668. Psalmist

  669. is talking

  670. here about

  671. deep

  672. deep

  673. rest

  674. of the

  675. soul.

  676. Deep

  677. rest of

  678. the soul

  679. a rest

  680. that we

  681. all need

  682. and a

  683. rest that

  684. so many

  685. do not

  686. have.

  687. And it

  688. plays out

  689. in our

  690. work.

  691. She's

  692. one of the

  693. biggest

  694. selling

  695. female

  696. artists

  697. of all

  698. time

  699. having

  700. sold

  701. over

  702. 400

  703. million

  704. albums

  705. around

  706. the

  707. world.

  708. She's

  709. done

  710. TV

  711. work,

  712. film

  713. work,

  714. launched

  715. her own

  716. line of

  717. clothing,

  718. her career

  719. has

  720. expanded

  721. more than

  722. four

  723. decades

  724. and she's

  725. won

  726. multiple

  727. Golden

  728. Globes

  729. and

  730. Grammys.

  731. But

  732. Madonna

  733. still can't

  734. find

  735. rest.

  736. When

  737. Madonna

  738. was in

  739. the

  740. heyday

  741. of her

  742. cultural

  743. significance

  744. she gave

  745. a now

  746. famous

  747. interview

  748. with

  749. I think

  750. it was

  751. Vanity Fair

  752. or Vogue

  753. for me

  754. I don't

  755. care.

  756. She said

  757. what she

  758. said there

  759. about her

  760. work was

  761. very sobering.

  762. I have

  763. an iron

  764. wheel

  765. and all

  766. of my

  767. will

  768. has always

  769. been to

  770. conquer

  771. some

  772. horrible

  773. feeling

  774. of

  775. inadequacy.

  776. I'm

  777. always

  778. struggling

  779. with that

  780. fear.

  781. I push

  782. past

  783. one

  784. spell

  785. of it

  786. and

  787. discover

  788. myself

  789. as a

  790. special

  791. human

  792. being

  793. and

  794. then I

  795. get to

  796. another

  797. stage

  798. and I

  799. think I'm

  800. mediocre

  801. and uninteresting.

  802. My drive

  803. in life

  804. is from

  805. this horrible

  806. fear of

  807. being

  808. mediocre

  809. and that's

  810. always

  811. pushing me

  812. pushing me

  813. because even

  814. though I

  815. become

  816. somebody

  817. I still

  818. have to

  819. prove

  820. that

  821. somebody.

  822. My

  823. struggle

  824. has never

  825. ended

  826. and it

  827. probably

  828. never

  829. will.

  830. that

  831. was her

  832. answer

  833. to the

  834. question

  835. of why

  836. do you

  837. work

  838. so

  839. hard?

  840. Harold

  841. Abrahams

  842. was an

  843. English

  844. athlete

  845. who won

  846. the 100

  847. metre

  848. gold

  849. medal

  850. at the

  851. 1924

  852. Paris

  853. Olympics.

  854. What was

  855. his motivation

  856. to work

  857. so hard

  858. train

  859. so hard?

  860. He was

  861. asked that

  862. question

  863. what drove

  864. you?

  865. He said

  866. quote

  867. I've got

  868. 10 seconds

  869. to justify

  870. my

  871. existence.

  872. You see

  873. on top

  874. of the

  875. work

  876. that we

  877. do

  878. our

  879. vocations

  880. in life

  881. is this

  882. deeper

  883. work

  884. that's

  885. going

  886. on in

  887. the

  888. soul.

  889. A

  890. work

  891. that

  892. sits

  893. under

  894. all

  895. of

  896. that

  897. work

  898. and

  899. for

  900. most

  901. part

  902. for

  903. the

  904. most

  905. part

  906. it's

  907. unseen.

  908. so many

  909. of us

  910. unaware

  911. that we're

  912. not actually

  913. just working

  914. in our

  915. vocations

  916. we're

  917. working

  918. deep

  919. in our

  920. souls

  921. at the

  922. same

  923. time.

  924. The

  925. atheist

  926. Stephen

  927. J.

  928. Gould

  929. put it

  930. like

  931. this

  932. we're

  933. here

  934. because

  935. one

  936. odd

  937. group

  938. of

  939. fishes

  940. had a

  941. peculiar

  942. fin

  943. anatomy

  944. that

  945. could

  946. transform

  947. into

  948. legs

  949. for

  950. terrestrial

  951. creatures.

  952. Because the

  953. earth never

  954. froze entirely

  955. during an

  956. ice age

  957. because our

  958. small and

  959. tenuous

  960. species

  961. arising in

  962. Africa a

  963. quarter of a million

  964. years ago

  965. has managed

  966. so far to

  967. survive by

  968. hook or by

  969. crook

  970. we may

  971. yearn for

  972. a higher

  973. answer but

  974. none

  975. exists.

  976. This

  977. explanation

  978. though

  979. superficially

  980. troubling

  981. is ultimately

  982. liberating

  983. we have to

  984. construct

  985. therefore

  986. any

  987. meaning

  988. ourselves.

  989. And he's

  990. absolutely

  991. right.

  992. If you

  993. want to

  994. begin

  995. with the

  996. premise

  997. that there

  998. is no

  999. creator

  1000. God

  1001. that it's

  1002. all an

  1003. accident

  1004. a freak

  1005. accident

  1006. then you

  1007. have to

  1008. construct

  1009. meaning

  1010. for

  1011. yourself

  1012. because

  1013. no

  1014. other

  1015. meaning

  1016. exists.

  1017. That is

  1018. the bedrock

  1019. of secularism.

  1020. There is

  1021. no such

  1022. thing as

  1023. purpose in

  1024. life and

  1025. Stephen Jay

  1026. Gould is

  1027. one of the

  1028. few

  1029. atheists

  1030. who

  1031. actually will

  1032. acknowledge

  1033. that

  1034. or did

  1035. acknowledge

  1036. it.

  1037. And so

  1038. many of

  1039. us in

  1040. our

  1041. productivity

  1042. driven

  1043. western

  1044. world

  1045. are

  1046. trying to

  1047. construct

  1048. that

  1049. meaning

  1050. out of

  1051. our

  1052. work.

  1053. Out of

  1054. our

  1055. vocation

  1056. out of

  1057. our stages

  1058. in life

  1059. out of

  1060. our

  1061. gifting.

  1062. There is

  1063. a deeper

  1064. work going

  1065. on that

  1066. our vocations

  1067. feed into

  1068. and that

  1069. we actually

  1070. try to

  1071. extract from

  1072. our work.

  1073. And that

  1074. is what

  1075. makes our

  1076. work such

  1077. a burden

  1078. such a

  1079. mess

  1080. so far

  1081. from the

  1082. ideal.

  1083. If

  1084. anything goes

  1085. wrong with

  1086. our work

  1087. then our

  1088. sense of

  1089. self becomes

  1090. unraveled.

  1091. When we

  1092. retire our

  1093. sense of

  1094. purposelessness

  1095. increases.

  1096. Our identities

  1097. get rocked.

  1098. This is where

  1099. the Christian

  1100. teaching on

  1101. creation and

  1102. work is just

  1103. so helpful

  1104. for our

  1105. sense of

  1106. being.

  1107. in Genesis

  1108. 2 when

  1109. God finishes

  1110. the sixth

  1111. day of

  1112. creating

  1113. he

  1114. effectively

  1115. declares

  1116. it is

  1117. finished.

  1118. It's

  1119. done.

  1120. Centuries

  1121. later the

  1122. same God

  1123. cries out the

  1124. same words

  1125. it is

  1126. finished.

  1127. The first

  1128. time God

  1129. got rest

  1130. because of

  1131. creation

  1132. the second

  1133. time Jesus

  1134. Christ

  1135. calls out

  1136. it is

  1137. finished on

  1138. the cross

  1139. so that we

  1140. could have

  1141. deep soul

  1142. rest.

  1143. Hebrews 4

    Hebrews 4:9

  1144. verse 9

  1145. puts it like

  1146. this.

  1147. There remains

  1148. then a

  1149. Sabbath rest

  1150. for the

  1151. people of

  1152. God.

  1153. For anyone

  1154. who enters

  1155. God's rest

  1156. also rests

  1157. from their

  1158. work just

  1159. as God

  1160. did from

  1161. his.

  1162. See the

  1163. rest of

  1164. Hebrew 4

  1165. tells us

  1166. that we

  1167. can enter

  1168. God's

  1169. eternal

  1170. rest

  1171. the purpose

  1172. of creation

  1173. right now

  1174. in Jesus

  1175. Christ.

  1176. Right now.

  1177. The approval

  1178. that every

  1179. human being

  1180. needs

  1181. is to be

  1182. approved

  1183. in God's

  1184. heart.

  1185. The

  1186. significance

  1187. that we

  1188. really need

  1189. is the

  1190. significance

  1191. that we

  1192. get from

  1193. God's

  1194. eyes.

  1195. The

  1196. security

  1197. that we

  1198. need

  1199. is the

  1200. security

  1201. of being

  1202. wrapped

  1203. in God's

  1204. arms.

  1205. work

  1206. will

  1207. never

  1208. ever

  1209. give it

  1210. to us.

  1211. God's

  1212. work

  1213. is

  1214. finished

  1215. on the

  1216. day of

  1217. creation

  1218. and the

  1219. day of

  1220. redemption.

  1221. The

  1222. Lord God

  1223. is Yahweh

  1224. Elohim.

  1225. He is

  1226. our creator

  1227. and our

  1228. redeemer.

  1229. In

  1230. Jesus

  1231. Christ

  1232. our

  1233. existence

  1234. is

  1235. justified

  1236. before we

  1237. even get

  1238. up in

  1239. the morning

  1240. and head

  1241. to work.

  1242. He is

  1243. our

  1244. existence

  1245. and he

  1246. is our

  1247. justification.

  1248. He is

  1249. not our

  1250. work.

  1251. Religion

  1252. turns even

  1253. him into

  1254. a work.

  1255. We will

  1256. never have

  1257. joy and

  1258. freedom and

  1259. rest in

  1260. our work

  1261. until we

  1262. realize that

  1263. the deepest

  1264. work,

  1265. the work

  1266. to redeem

  1267. and to

  1268. justify

  1269. our souls

  1270. has

  1271. already

  1272. been

  1273. fully

  1274. completely

  1275. accomplished

  1276. and

  1277. finalized

  1278. in

  1279. Jesus.

  1280. And so

  1281. what Jesus

  1282. does is

  1283. he calls

  1284. us to

  1285. come to

  1286. him.

  1287. Come to

  1288. me all

  1289. you who

  1290. are weary

  1291. and burdened

  1292. and I

  1293. will give

  1294. you rest.

  1295. Take my

  1296. yoke upon

  1297. you and

  1298. learn from

  1299. me for

  1300. I am

  1301. gentle and

  1302. humble in

  1303. heart and

  1304. you will

  1305. find rest

  1306. for your

  1307. souls.

  1308. for my

  1309. yoke is

  1310. easy and

  1311. my burden

  1312. is light.

  1313. He offers

  1314. us deep

  1315. deep rest

  1316. because he

  1317. took our

  1318. burden.

  1319. A rest

  1320. that's so

  1321. deep that

  1322. your world

  1323. can move

  1324. into chaos.

  1325. Your

  1326. workplace,

  1327. your vocation

  1328. can move

  1329. into chaos

  1330. and yet you

  1331. can still

  1332. have rest.

  1333. He was

  1334. crushed for

  1335. our sin,

  1336. he shouldered

  1337. our burden.

  1338. So how

  1339. do we know

  1340. that we

  1341. are truly

  1342. resting in

  1343. the finished

  1344. work of

  1345. his redemption

  1346. and not

  1347. just his

  1348. creation?

  1349. Well, for

  1350. a start we

  1351. can take

  1352. time off.

  1353. We can

  1354. stop and

  1355. we commune

  1356. with him.

  1357. If we do

  1358. not stop

  1359. from all

  1360. of our

  1361. work to

  1362. be with

  1363. God,

  1364. God,

  1365. it's one

  1366. of the

  1367. first signs

  1368. that we

  1369. do not

  1370. have

  1371. spiritual

  1372. rest in

  1373. Jesus.

  1374. Our

  1375. experience

  1376. of rest

  1377. is

  1378. proportionate

  1379. to our

  1380. trusting in

  1381. him.

  1382. Our

  1383. wholehearted

  1384. trust

  1385. brings rest

  1386. to our

  1387. souls in

  1388. all of

  1389. its divine,

  1390. cosmic,

  1391. and ideal

  1392. dimensions.

  1393. as the

  1394. great

  1395. Saint

  1396. Augustine

  1397. said,

  1398. our hearts

  1399. are restless

  1400. until they

  1401. find rest

  1402. in God.

  1403. Life

  1404. apart from

  1405. Jesus is

  1406. constant

  1407. striving,

  1408. and we

  1409. will remain

  1410. restless no

  1411. matter what

  1412. we obtain

  1413. or what we

  1414. attain in

  1415. this world.

  1416. And so

  1417. Jesus calls

  1418. you,

  1419. the weary,

  1420. the burdened,

  1421. to come to

  1422. him and

  1423. receive the

  1425. rest.

  1426. His deepest

  1427. heart towards

  1428. you is not

  1429. to lump you

  1430. with more

  1431. work.

  1432. His deepest

  1433. heart towards

  1434. you is

  1435. gentleness

  1436. and humility

  1437. and rest.

  1438. Come,

  1439. follow

  1440. Jesus,

  1441. treasure

  1442. Jesus,

  1443. and find

  1444. rest for

  1445. your souls.

  1446. Amen.
