  1. Well, good morning, everyone.

  2. It'd be great if you could keep your Bibles open there.

  3. I'm actually going to be going through to verse 9 this morning,

  4. so you'll need it in front of you when I look at that.

  5. But also the St. Paul's app has got an outline.

  6. Four points this morning, and that's our journey

  7. as we continue on into Genesis.

  8. This is, if you're new with us today,

  9. we are looking at the beginning of all things.

  10. It's just a framework, the foundation of the Christian faith,

  11. and in particularly, not just the beginning of creation,

  12. but the beginning of our knowledge of God.

  13. Genesis fundamentally is about who God is,

  14. and they're from that how we come to understand ourselves.

  15. So let me pray as we launch in.

  16. Gracious God, we are grateful for what we have been engaging with

  17. in your word.

  18. In a world that looks at all the details around us

  19. and causes elements of anxiety to arise in us

  20. with a great deal of uncertainty about the future

  21. of the world in which we live,

  22. there are so many things that trouble us.

  23. You're a God who exists outside of your creation.

  24. You never had a beginning.

  25. You never had an end.

  26. You're everlasting to everlasting.

  27. You are God, and you're a God who sovereignly rules

  28. and ordains and controls all things,

  29. even if we don't understand it.

  30. Help us to lean into you,

  31. the majestic, beautiful, good God.

  32. And so today, as we open this word,

  33. change our hearts and our minds,

  34. help us to see the issues that are fundamental

  35. in each one of our lives,

  36. but help us to see you a good and a great God as well

  37. and how you've resolved those issues for us.

  38. For those of us who have taken this journey,

  39. been following you for many years,

  40. we come to texts like this

  41. knowing how it all plays out.

  42. Lord, break through that rut now

  43. so that we might see you in newer ways,

  44. in clearer ways, in majestic ways.

  45. Amen.

  46. On the 21st of April, 1970,

  47. Leonard Casey, a Western Australian farmer,

  48. withdrew from Australia and set up his own micronation.

  49. His 75 square kilometre farm,

  50. 517 kilometres north of Perth,

  51. became known as Hutt River Province.

  52. He withdrew from Australia

  53. because of an ongoing dispute about wheat production,

  54. particularly with the Western Australian government

  55. about wheat production.

  56. So Leonard Casey became known as His Majesty,

  57. Prince Leonard I of Hutt,

  58. and then granted royal titles

  59. to the rest of his farming family.

  60. It produced, over time,

  61. it produced its own currency,

  62. its stamps and its passport,

  63. none of which was recognised

  64. by any government in the world.

  65. In fact, someone was arrested in Germany

  66. in the 1980s

  67. using a Hutt River Province passport

  68. for entry into Germany.

  69. Now, what followed for Leonard, Leo,

  70. was years and years of legal disputes

  71. until, on the 2nd of December, 1977,

  72. Casey had had enough

  73. and he declared war on Australia.

  74. Baffling, really.

  75. But he notified the authorities of Australia

  76. three days later

  77. that he was ceasing hostilities against Australia.

  78. He withdrew his declaration of war

  79. because, frankly, no one turned up.

  80. And so he moved on.

  81. In 2017, after 45 years,

  82. sitting on his self-styled throne,

  83. Prince Leonard stepped down as ruler.

  84. His youngest son, Graham,

  85. took the throne as the new ruler,

  86. inherited Hutt River Province,

  87. as well as his dad's $2.5 million of debt

  88. to the Australian Taxation Office.

  89. On the 3rd of August, 2020,

  90. the Principality of Hutt River Province

  91. was formally dissolved.

  92. The Principality's land was sold off

  93. in 2021 to settle an ongoing legal debt

  94. of more than $2.7 million.

  95. So Hutt River Province was this...

  96. It, in fact, became quite a popular tourist attraction

  97. mainly because they wanted to visit the nutjob who did this.

  98. And so it was a spurious attempt by Leonard Casey

  99. to evade laws and responsibilities

  100. that he did not agree with,

  101. primarily with the Australian government

  102. but ultimately with the federal government.

  103. From the moment he declared independence,

  104. his life started to decline.

  105. Ongoing legal battles,

  106. mounting debts, conflicts.

  107. And now Hutt River Province

  108. doesn't even exist.

  109. Doesn't even exist.

  110. The core problem that saw the creation

  111. of Hutt River Province,

  112. the core problem for Leonard Casey

  113. and the core problem for you and me

  114. and all the humanity

  115. finds its origin in what was just read out to us by Anne

  116. in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  117. The issues of our world

  118. are very obvious.

  119. I don't need to unpack that for you at all.

  120. I mean, open the newspaper, turn on the TV

  121. or just spend a quiet half an hour or so

  122. with your own heart and mind.

  123. Every worldview has to account for the world

  124. in which we live in some way.

  125. And this is the Christian account.

  126. This is a Christian account.

  127. Does it fit with our experience of the world?

  128. So, if you've got the St. Paul's app,

  129. you'll see four points there.

  130. The first point is the mock.

  131. Genesis 3 starts with a mock,

  132. hidden as a question.

  133. Verse 1,

  134. So here, the rest of the Bible tells us

  135. what we have here is we have Satan

  136. speaking through the serpent.

  137. Now, we've got probably a heap of bunch of questions

  138. about that.

  139. But this text is primarily about us

  140. and how we got to be the way we are.

  141. The fall of the human race

  142. does not start with an action.

  143. It starts with an attitude.

  144. It starts with a desire.

  145. It starts with a scoff.

  146. It starts with a mock.

  147. It starts with a roll of the eyes.

  148. The key to understanding what this verse is about

  149. is the word really.

  150. It's a word that in actual fact

  151. is translated as indeed.

  152. Did God indeed say?

  153. The serpent is not so much denying

  154. what God has said,

  155. he's in fact rolling his eyes

  156. at what God has said.

  157. He's mocking what God has said.

  158. He isn't saying God didn't say it.

  159. He's saying,

  160. I can't believe God said that.

  161. It's a joke.

  162. Surely God did not really say that.

  163. It's a statement.

  164. It's not a question.

  165. Come on, Eve.

  166. Come on.

  167. Get with the times, Eve.

  168. This is the year one.

  169. I mean, get with the modern times.

  170. Surely you don't believe that stuff anymore.

  171. He's trying to change, ultimately,

  172. Adam and Eve's attitude towards God's word.

  173. The fall of the human race

  174. starts with an attitude of the heart.

  175. This happens more often than not in our modern world.

  176. Very rarely does anyone lose God

  177. through an argument.

  178. They lose him through an attitude

  179. or through an atmosphere.

  180. An atmosphere.

  181. When the consistent voice of culture across every platform says that

  182. Christianity is not reasonable,

  183. it's not relevant for a modern era or even dangerous,

  184. then there's an atmosphere that we breathe each day.

  185. It's subtle.

  186. Very rarely do you ever engage with a full frontal attack

  187. on the Christian faith in terms of its logic.

  188. What we're confronted with consistently

  189. from children's TV through to comedians and in the media

  190. and is the mock, the joke, the pithy one-liners

  191. that seem reasonable but actually make no sense at all

  192. if you spend time unpacking them.

  193. And it is overwhelming the atmosphere that we breathe.

  194. For every argument against the Christian faith,

  195. there would have to be more than 99 mocks, scoffs, sneers.

  196. None of those 99 mocks and sneers and scoffs

  197. are themselves an argument in any way whatsoever.

  198. However, they're not rational in any way whatsoever.

  199. A mock is a mere assertion trying to create

  200. an atmosphere of doubt and defence.

  201. It is not an argument in itself.

  202. They need to give an argument as to why they think

  203. the Christian faith is not reasonable, relevant and good

  204. and very rarely do you ever hear it.

  205. Even the great secular debaters of this era,

  206. very rarely will any of them endure an entire debate

  207. without getting personal, without scoffing in some way,

  208. without taking, ridiculing their opponent,

  209. their Christian opponent in some way.

  210. Be careful, Christian, not to fight fire with fire

  211. and use the same techniques back.

  212. Now, we're not told here how long Adam and Eve deliberated

  213. after being targeted by the serpent.

  214. But surely the atmosphere was created.

  215. They were torn.

  216. They were confused.

  217. They were disorientated.

  218. I wonder when the mocking of the serpent started to prompt in them

  219. quiet whispers of worthlessness,

  220. of alienation, of questioning, of confusion,

  221. of disorientation, of purposelessness.

  222. I wonder how long it took for fear and desperation

  223. to start setting in.

  224. It started with just a mock.

  225. Just a mock.

  226. Then comes the lie.

  227. What follows the attitude of the heart is a lie for the mind.

  228. Chapter 3, verse 2.

  229. The woman said to the serpent,

  230. We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,

  231. but God did say you must not eat fruit from the tree

  232. that is in the middle of the garden,

  233. and you must not touch it or you will die.

  234. And then here comes the lie, verse 4.

  235. You will not certainly die,

  236. for God knows that when you eat from it,

  237. your eyes will be opened.

  238. You see, the serpent's message here,

  239. the undercurrent of the message is,

  240. if you will obey God,

  241. it will truly ruin your life.

  242. He doesn't want you to eat of the tree

  243. because it will open up for you

  244. a whole new avenue of looking at the world,

  245. whole new opportunities for you.

  246. Satan is trying to get into Adam and Eve's mind and heart

  247. and our mind and heart

  248. that if you obey God,

  249. you will ruin your life.

  250. You will miss out on life.

  251. If you obey God, you will not be happy.

  252. If you obey God, you'll be held back.

  253. You will not realise yourself.

  254. You will be oppressed.

  255. You will be miserable.

  256. You see, Satan knows just how to destroy.

  257. Notice in the arguments here,

  258. notice he does not start with,

  259. get a platform up,

  260. let's have a debate about the existence of God.

  261. That's not where he's starting at all.

  262. Doesn't start with the existence of God.

  263. It's pretty obvious.

  264. I mean, they actually were walking with him yesterday.

  265. He doesn't go after the word of God,

  266. the will of God,

  267. the perfection of God.

  268. What he goes after is the goodness of God.

  269. The very first lie is about the goodness of God.

  270. And the love and the grace and the goodwill behind

  271. every single one of the commands of God.

  272. He is getting them here to doubt God's goodwill.

  273. He is getting them to distrust God.

  274. And that lie went in deep.

  275. Adam and Eve were targeted.

  276. They were deceived.

  277. They were gaslit.

  278. And they were harmed.

  279. And in targeting God's goodness,

  280. the serpent also targeted their own glory

  281. as bearers of the image of God.

  282. didn't just attack God from outside.

  283. He attacked them from the inside.

  284. And that lie of the serpent is deep

  285. in the heart of every human being.

  286. It's a lie that causes us to question

  287. the goodness of God.

  288. And his goodness

  289. behind every single one of his commands.

  290. You see,

  291. this gets worked out in various ways for us.

  292. The religious moralist lives a life

  293. of legalistic restraint

  294. in order to earn salvation

  295. through their upright life and good deeds.

  296. Ultimately, they do not trust

  297. the grace and the goodness of God

  298. to do it for them.

  299. The religious moralist

  300. does not trust

  301. in the goodness of God.

  302. The rebel liberalist

  303. pursues a life of free abandon

  304. because they do not trust

  305. the goodness

  306. and the grace of God

  307. and that following him

  308. is in fact the best life.

  309. Totally different ways

  310. to respond

  311. to the exact same lie.

  312. The lie that God is not good.

  313. That he's holding out on you.

  314. That he wants to

  315. ruin your life.

  316. And humanity's life

  317. has been ruined

  318. by embracing the lie.

  319. Going to impact next week

  320. more of how we see that

  321. in every sphere of life.

  322. So that brings us to...

  323. First, there's an attitude of the heart.

  324. Then there's a life of the mind.

  325. And this leads to the tree

  326. and the act of the will.

  327. Have a look at verse 6.

  328. When the woman saw

  329. that the fruit of the tree

  330. was good for food

  331. and pleasing to the eye

  332. and also desirable

  333. for gaining wisdom,

  334. she took some

  335. and ate it.

  336. She also gave some

  337. to her husband

  338. who was with her

  339. and he ate it.

  340. I'm not unpacking this

  341. but just in the last week

  342. I've been reflecting

  343. what...

  344. what was happening

  345. in the heart,

  346. the emotions

  347. of both Adam and Eve

  348. that they would look at that tree

  349. and they would want that more

  350. than the God

  351. that they walked with day by day.

  352. How destroyed internally were they

  353. to actually reach out

  354. and grab at that point?

  355. Just the thought

  356. that I'm reflecting on.

  357. They're in paradise.

  358. It's perfect.

  359. They can do anything

  360. except eat from the tree,

  361. this particular tree.

  362. So what's the big deal

  363. about the tree

  364. and what kind of fruit was it?

  365. You know,

  366. as you're walking through

  367. Harris Farm.

  368. Hmm.

  369. You know,

  370. it could be a choco.

  371. My experience is

  372. it probably was a choco

  373. if you've ever eaten

  374. one of those things.

  375. But the point here is,

  376. I say that as a joke,

  377. don't take that as a note

  378. by the way.

  379. There's no Hebrew translation

  380. of choco here at all.

  381. Let me just...

  382. What's the big deal

  383. about the tree?

  384. What's so bad

  385. about the fruit?

  386. What if God

  387. had given Adam and Eve

  388. an explanation

  389. so he knew

  390. which fruit not to order

  391. on Woolworths

  392. or Coles?

  393. If he had some...

  394. What if God

  395. had said to them...

  396. What if God

  397. had said to them

  398. that if you

  399. from this tree...

  400. If you eat

  401. from this tree,

  402. you'll be suffering

  403. hardship

  404. and broken

  405. relationships

  406. and disease

  407. for the rest

  408. of human history?

  409. What if he had said that?

  410. What if he had said

  411. that if you do eat

  412. for the tree,

  413. your life in every sphere

  414. will be ruined?

  415. They might have

  416. walked away.

  417. They might have

  418. walked away.

  419. Here's a taste for you.

  420. Let me just show you.

  421. They might have

  422. walked away.

  423. The reason why God

  424. didn't give them

  425. an explanation

  426. is absolutely crucial

  427. to why this command

  428. is so important.

  429. The reason why

  430. we know nothing

  431. about what is

  432. significant about

  433. this tree

  434. or what kind

  435. Fruto is,

  436. it helps us

  437. understand why

  438. this command

  439. is so significant.

  440. If he had

  441. given them

  442. an explanation

  443. and they

  444. walked away,

  445. they'd be

  446. walking away

  447. because it would

  448. be cost-benefit

  449. analysis.

  450. That's the reason

  451. they'd walk away.

  452. It's not worth

  453. my time.

  454. It's not worth

  455. my future.

  456. It's not worth

  457. ruining my life

  458. to eat of this

  459. tree.

  460. That's not

  461. obedience.

  462. That's religion.

  463. It's cost-benefit

  464. analysis.

  465. And that would be

  466. they would not

  467. eat of the tree

  468. out of self-interest.

  469. And they would

  470. still be in the

  471. driver's seat

  472. of their life.

  473. God wanted

  474. Adam and Eve

  475. to live as if

  476. he was God.

  477. They were made

  478. in his image.

  479. They'd been given

  480. the gift of life

  481. was spoilt.

  482. And I use that

  483. term in a positive

  484. way, spoilt with

  485. the abundance of

  486. Eden.

  487. And he wanted

  488. them to live by

  489. his power and

  490. under his

  491. authority.

  492. Their lives,

  493. the world that

  494. they inhabited,

  495. was all a

  496. gift.

  497. None of it was

  498. a possession for

  499. them to do as

  500. they pleased.

  501. And so God

  502. simply said,

  503. do not eat

  504. of the tree.

  505. That one.

  506. Don't eat of that

  507. one.

  508. And with that

  509. command,

  510. they can

  511. choose to

  512. live with

  513. God as

  514. God or

  515. themselves as

  516. God.

  517. It's just as

  518. simple as that.

  519. The serpent

  520. knows this

  521. because he

  522. suggests that

  523. they take the

  524. tree and you

  525. will be like

  526. God.

  527. It is so

  528. essential that

  529. we look beyond

  530. the rules like

  531. the Ten

  532. Commandments and

  533. others that we

  534. see and see

  535. that there is a

  536. key reason for

  537. every single

  538. one of them.

  539. And the key

  540. is this.

  541. God is God

  542. and you are

  543. not.

  544. Do not put

  545. yourself in the

  546. place of God.

  547. Obey him

  548. simply because

  549. he is God.

  550. God.

  551. Every single

  552. thing that is

  553. wrong with us

  554. in this world

  555. is linked to

  556. the root issue

  557. of putting

  558. ourselves in

  559. the place of

  560. God.

  561. Now that's

  562. pretty obvious

  563. the big stuff

  564. like murder.

  565. It's me playing

  566. God over another

  567. human being.

  568. It's me taking

  569. a life.

  570. But what about

  571. all the other

  572. things?

  573. What about

  574. anxiety?

  575. Some of us

  576. are eaten up

  577. by worry in

  578. life.

  579. Why?

  580. For me

  581. personally

  582. that is

  583. I have an

  584. idea of

  585. how my

  586. relationship

  587. should go.

  588. I have an

  589. idea of

  590. how church

  591. should go.

  592. How my

  593. health should

  594. go.

  595. How my

  596. plans should

  597. go.

  598. And there

  599. are times

  600. I'm not

  601. fully confident

  602. that the

  603. sovereign God

  604. who brought

  605. everything into

  606. being is

  607. over it all.

  608. Because the

  609. lie runs deep

  610. in my heart.

  611. God you

  612. know if

  613. you're good

  614. I think you

  615. do it this

  616. way not

  617. that way.

  618. I put myself

  619. in the place

  620. of God.

  621. Mistrust

  622. puts me in

  623. the place of

  624. God.

  625. What about

  626. grudges?

  627. If you don't

  628. forgive someone

  629. it's because you

  630. are taking God's

  631. place again.

  632. We think we

  633. know what a

  634. person deserves.

  635. We think we

  636. have the right

  637. to ensure that

  638. they get what

  639. they deserve.

  640. That's me on

  641. the throne of

  642. my life

  643. again.

  644. How is it

  645. possible that I

  646. could ever

  647. know the

  648. depths of

  649. another person's

  650. mind and

  651. heart when I

  652. don't even

  653. know my

  654. own?

  655. All of our

  656. problems stem

  657. from us taking

  658. God's place.

  659. And this

  660. fundamentally is

  661. just choosing to

  662. obey or not.

  663. choosing to

  664. obey God or

  665. not on the

  666. basis of

  667. whether I

  668. think it

  669. makes sense

  670. or not.

  671. William W.

  672. Borden was

  673. the heir of a

  674. wealthy Chicago

  675. family.

  676. I've mentioned

  677. him, this

  678. guy, in the

  679. past.

  680. In 1904 and

  681. 1905 at the

  682. age of 16 he

  683. travelled the

  684. world.

  685. And this

  686. was followed

  687. by a brilliant

  688. career at Yale

  689. and then Princeton

  690. Seminary where

  691. he committed his

  692. life to seeking

  693. to win

  694. Muslims in

  695. China to

  696. Jesus.

  697. In 1903,

  698. sorry, 1913,

  699. sorry, at the

  700. age of 25 he

  701. left for Egypt

  702. and he never

  703. looked back.

  704. Before he

  705. left, Borden

  706. gave away

  707. $800,000

  708. in his

  709. day, which

  710. is equivalent

  711. to over $20

  712. million today.

  713. That was his

  714. own portion

  715. that he'd

  716. accumulated in

  717. the vast

  718. family wealth.

  719. He gave it

  720. away to

  721. charitable

  722. missions

  723. everywhere

  724. and he

  725. went to

  726. Egypt.

  727. Egypt.

  728. He did

  729. not know

  730. at that

  731. point, at

  732. the age of

  733. 25, it

  734. was the

  735. final year

  736. of his

  737. life.

  738. In

  739. Cairo, he

  740. contracted

  741. cerebral

  742. meningitis

  743. and died.

  744. His mother

  745. was on her

  746. way to

  747. Cairo to

  748. have a

  749. holiday with

  750. him, but

  751. instead she

  752. arrived just

  753. in time to

  754. bury him.

  755. It is

  756. said that

  757. she found

  758. his Bible

  759. as she

  760. cleaned up

  761. his things

  762. and in

  763. his Bible

  764. were the

  765. words,

  766. no reserve,

  767. written,

  768. no reserve.

  769. And the

  770. date he

  771. wrote it,

  772. it suggests

  773. that he's

  774. been written

  775. shortly after

  776. he renounced

  777. his fortune

  778. and gave

  779. it away to

  780. missions.

  781. Later, he

  782. was said to

  783. have written,

  784. no retreat.

  785. retreat.

  786. And the

  787. date of

  788. that no

  789. retreat was

  790. after his

  791. father told

  792. him that he

  793. would never

  794. hold a

  795. position in

  796. the family

  797. business from

  798. here on

  799. in.

  800. And finally,

  801. shortly before

  802. he died in

  803. Egypt, and

  804. it's believed

  805. to be the

  806. last words he

  807. ever wrote,

  808. no regrets.

  809. No regrets.

  810. Why did he

  811. not write,

  812. what are you

  813. doing, God?

  814. I mean,

  815. can't you see

  816. everything I've

  817. done for you?

  818. Here I am in

  819. Egypt looking

  820. to go into

  821. the mission

  822. field to

  823. extend your

  824. kingdom.

  825. What are you

  826. doing after

  827. everything I've

  828. done for you?

  829. Why did he

  830. not write

  831. that?

  832. It's because

  833. he didn't

  834. obey God

  835. for reputation.

  836. He did not

  837. obey God

  838. for results.

  839. He did not

  840. obey God

  841. for impact.

  842. He obeyed

  843. God because

  844. God is

  845. God.

  846. And he

  847. wasn't.

  848. At least

  849. in this

  850. instance,

  851. Borden

  852. disbelieved

  853. the lie

  854. that you

  855. cannot trust

  856. God.

  857. Let me

  858. say as a

  859. side point,

  860. he ended

  861. up inspiring

  862. thousands of

  863. people to

  864. become

  865. missionaries

  866. in the

  867. generations

  868. that followed.

  869. He never

  870. knew that

  871. on his

  872. deathbed.

  873. Through

  874. his death,

  875. he's had

  876. significant

  877. impact in

  878. the lives

  879. of thousands,

  880. if not

  881. millions.

  882. So Adam

  883. and Eve

  884. took the

  885. fruit,

  886. setting

  887. course of

  888. human history

  889. a distrust

  890. of God.

  891. So friends,

  892. hear this.

  893. what your

  894. and mine,

  895. what our

  896. hearts

  897. desire,

  898. the mind

  899. justifies

  900. and our

  901. will's

  902. action.

  903. In the

  904. final verses

  905. of this

  906. section,

  907. we see the

  908. rest of

  909. humanity

  910. and human

  911. history in

  912. summary form.

  913. Verses

  914. eight and

  915. nine.

  916. Then the

  917. man and

  918. his wife

  919. heard the

  920. sound of

  921. the Lord

  922. God as

  923. he was

  924. walking in

  925. the garden

  926. in the

  927. cool of

  928. the day,

  929. and they

  930. hid from

  931. the Lord

  932. among the

  933. trees of

  934. the garden.

  935. But the

  936. Lord God,

  937. called out

  938. to the

  939. man,

  940. where are

  941. you?

  942. There's a

  943. couple of

  944. things I

  945. want to

  946. point out

  947. here.

  948. The first

  949. thing is

  950. Adam and

  951. Eve went

  952. into hiding

  953. the moment

  954. they rejected

  955. God.

  956. They went

  957. into hiding.

  958. The consequence

  959. of not

  960. trusting in

  961. the goodness

  962. of God

  963. is we

  964. hide.

  965. And I'm

  966. going to

  967. unpack this

  968. a little bit

  969. more next

  970. week.

  971. We hide

  972. from our

  973. true selves.

  974. We can't

  975. stand an

  976. honest review

  977. of ourselves.

  978. If it

  979. wasn't for

  980. verse eight,

  981. therapy in

  982. our world

  983. would not

  984. exist.

  985. We need

  986. therapy because

  987. we're constantly

  988. hiding from

  989. ourselves.

  990. Most

  991. significantly

  992. though here

  993. is we

  994. hide from

  995. God.

  996. In the

  997. presence of

  998. God,

  999. we cannot

  1000. hide who

  1001. we truly

  1002. are.

  1003. And so

  1004. we must

  1005. hide.

  1006. It's not

  1007. just hiding

  1008. from consequences,

  1009. it's hiding

  1010. from ourselves

  1011. and God

  1012. reveals who

  1013. we truly

  1014. are.

  1015. We hide

  1016. from our

  1017. true selves,

  1018. we hide

  1019. from God

  1020. and we

  1021. hide from

  1022. others.

  1023. The second

  1024. thing to

  1025. notice and

  1026. the most

  1027. remarkable

  1028. thing is

  1029. that while

  1030. we are

  1031. running and

  1032. hiding,

  1033. God is

  1034. searching.

  1035. He's calling

  1036. out to

  1037. us.

  1038. It is our

  1039. nature to

  1040. hide from

  1041. God and

  1042. God's

  1043. nature is

  1044. to seek

  1045. us.

  1046. God calls

  1047. it out.

  1048. Where are

  1049. you?

  1050. Is God

  1051. like literally

  1052. right,

  1053. but can't

  1054. find Adam

  1055. and Eve?

  1056. Where are

  1057. they?

  1058. You know,

  1059. we're playing

  1060. hide and

  1061. seek.

  1062. How is it

  1063. possible that

  1064. an all-knowing,

  1065. sovereign,

  1066. omniscient God

  1067. who knows

  1068. every blade of

  1069. grass that

  1070. grows and

  1071. every bird,

  1072. how does he

  1073. not know

  1074. where they

  1075. are?

  1076. Of course

  1077. he knows

  1078. where they

  1079. are.

  1080. He's

  1081. pursuing them

  1082. is what

  1083. he's doing.

  1084. He's telling

  1085. Adam and

  1086. Eve, I'm

  1087. coming for

  1088. you.

  1089. I'm here

  1090. still.

  1091. he's

  1092. calling out

  1093. to them.

  1094. He's

  1095. engaging

  1096. them.

  1097. He's

  1098. reconnecting

  1099. with them.

  1100. He's

  1101. pursuing

  1102. them.

  1103. What we

  1104. need to

  1105. realize is

  1106. that if

  1107. we ever

  1108. find God,

  1109. in fact,

  1110. one of the

  1111. first things

  1112. you discover

  1113. is that

  1114. it's because

  1115. he was

  1116. becoming

  1117. after me.

  1118. He had

  1119. already

  1120. found me.

  1121. He found

  1122. me first.

  1123. And we

  1124. see this

  1125. in the

  1126. Bible from

  1127. beginning to

  1128. end.

  1129. He is

  1130. so, so

  1131. good.

  1132. Despite

  1133. our

  1134. rejection

  1135. of him,

  1136. he comes

  1137. after us.

  1138. And we

  1139. see the

  1140. ultimate

  1141. expression of

  1142. God coming

  1143. after us,

  1144. reconnecting

  1145. with us,

  1146. pursuing us,

  1147. engaging with

  1148. us, is

  1149. when God

  1150. the Son

  1151. himself took

  1152. on human

  1153. flesh and

  1154. descended into

  1155. our world to

  1156. come after

  1157. us.

  1158. We're going

  1159. to see this

  1160. in the coming

  1161. weeks, but

  1162. ultimately it

  1163. is Jesus

  1164. Christ who

  1165. stomps on

  1166. the head

  1167. of the

  1168. serpent and

  1169. crushes the

  1170. lie, gets

  1171. rid of the

  1172. mock.

  1173. He is the

  1174. one who

  1175. defeats the

  1176. serpent.

  1177. So reading

  1178. back into

  1179. these verses,

  1180. we see how

  1181. Jesus turns

  1182. it all around.

  1183. in the

  1184. Garden of

  1185. Eden, the

  1186. serpent lured

  1187. Adam and

  1188. Eve to

  1189. ignore the

  1190. command of

  1191. God about

  1192. the tree.

  1193. Centuries

  1194. later, Jesus

  1195. is in the

  1196. Garden of

  1197. Gethsemane

  1198. struggling with

  1199. the command of

  1200. God about

  1201. another tree,

  1202. a wooden

  1203. cross, a

  1204. cross cut

  1205. from a

  1206. tree.

  1207. Adam and

  1208. Eve were

  1209. told not to

  1210. take of the

  1211. tree.

  1212. Jesus is

  1213. commanded here

  1214. to embrace

  1215. the tree.

  1216. Get nailed

  1217. to the

  1218. tree.

  1219. Adam and

  1220. Eve ignored

  1221. the command

  1222. in the

  1223. hope of a

  1224. blessed life

  1225. but instead

  1226. got cursed.

  1227. Jesus Christ

  1228. obeyed the

  1229. command knowing

  1230. that he would

  1231. receive our

  1232. curse for

  1233. ignoring God's

  1234. command about

  1235. the tree.

  1236. The curse of

  1237. separation from

  1238. God so that

  1239. we could receive

  1240. the blessing of

  1241. being brought

  1242. back into

  1243. relationship with

  1244. God.

  1245. Adam and

  1246. Eve were in a

  1247. beautiful

  1248. garden and

  1249. God said,

  1250. if you

  1251. obey me

  1252. about the

  1253. tree, you

  1254. would live

  1255. and live

  1256. and live

  1257. but they

  1258. didn't.

  1259. Jesus is in

  1260. the darkness

  1261. of the

  1262. garden and

  1263. his father

  1264. said to him,

  1265. if you

  1266. obey me

  1267. about the

  1268. tree, you

  1269. will die.

  1270. You will

  1271. die.

  1272. You will be

  1273. crushed.

  1274. You will be

  1275. cursed.

  1276. and he

  1277. did.

  1278. He did.

  1279. He obeyed

  1280. and he

  1281. obeyed for

  1282. you and

  1283. for me

  1284. who deserve

  1285. to be

  1286. crushed,

  1287. who deserve

  1288. to be

  1289. destroyed,

  1290. who deserve

  1291. to be

  1292. cursed.

  1293. He embraced

  1294. the tree

  1295. of death

  1296. and turned

  1297. it into a

  1298. tree of

  1299. life for

  1300. us.

  1301. Jesus is

  1302. the one who

  1303. reverses the

  1304. sin of the

  1305. tree.

  1306. The sin

  1307. of us

  1308. where only

  1309. God deserves

  1310. to be.

  1311. That's the

  1312. Christian

  1313. gospel.

  1314. That's the

  1315. core of

  1316. the Christian

  1317. faith.

  1318. The tree

  1319. of salvation

  1320. is God

  1321. putting himself

  1322. where only

  1323. we deserve

  1324. to be

  1325. on a cross

  1326. of condemnation

  1327. and curse.

  1328. So when

  1329. Jesus obeyed

  1330. the father

  1331. about the

  1332. tree,

  1333. he also

  1334. crushed the

  1335. lie of

  1336. Satan.

  1337. He crushed

  1338. the lie

  1339. that we

  1340. cannot trust

  1341. God.

  1342. You want

  1343. to look

  1344. at the

  1345. goodness

  1346. of God?

  1347. See him

  1348. hanging on

  1349. a cross

  1350. for you.

  1351. No more

  1352. evidence is

  1353. required than

  1354. that.

  1355. The only

  1356. way to

  1357. overcome

  1358. the lie

  1359. that God

  1360. is not

  1361. trustworthy

  1362. is to

  1363. see this

  1364. God

  1365. descending

  1366. into his

  1367. world,

  1368. climbing the

  1369. tree of

  1370. death and

  1371. turning that

  1372. into a

  1373. tree of

  1374. life for

  1375. us.

  1376. It's the

  1377. only way

  1378. to overcome

  1379. the lie.

  1380. this is

  1381. the only

  1382. thing that

  1383. will day

  1384. by day

  1385. take the

  1386. poison of

  1387. the lie

  1388. out of

  1389. our hearts,

  1390. out of

  1391. our minds

  1392. and our

  1393. attitudes that

  1394. God is not

  1395. good and

  1396. that trusting

  1397. in him is

  1398. unreasonable

  1399. and it's

  1400. irrelevant for

  1401. our day

  1402. or that God

  1403. is not

  1404. good.

  1405. Jesus on

  1406. the cross

  1407. deals with

  1408. the mock,

  1409. the lie

  1410. and the

  1411. lie about

  1412. the tree.

  1413. Amen.

  1414. Amen.

  1415. Amen.

  1416. Amen.

  1417. Amen.

  1418. Amen.

  1419. Amen.

  1420. Amen.
