  1. Good morning. My name is John as well. I'm a regular member here for about 25 years,

  2. and I've been on staff for about the last few years.

  3. We are currently in a series that looks into chapter 1 to 11 of Genesis, the first book of the Bible,

  4. which starts with this word, in the beginning, God.

  5. These words tell us that Genesis, and in fact, the whole Bible is about God,

  6. the creator of the world, and his interaction with his creation.

  7. So what comes to your mind when you think about God?

  8. What about God can we expect from reading Genesis or the Bible?

  9. The beginning of Genesis shows us that God created a perfect environment in the Garden of Eden,

  10. a paradise for Adam and Eve,

  11. the very first pair of humans made in the image and the likeness of God.

  12. They were put into the garden to rule over all God's creatures,

  13. in the sea, in the sky, on the ground, while enjoying a relationship with God.

  14. God gave Adam and Eve specific instruction to follow,

  15. but instead they disobeyed and rebelled against God.

  16. They followed the serpent's voice and each other's voice and twisted God's word.

  17. They were made in the image and likeness of God, and God treated them as equal,

  18. but they sought to be equal with God on their terms.

  19. They want to live their life in their own way as they see fit.

  20. And that's how sin enters into God's creation.

  21. Sin is not just law-breaking.

  22. It is a deep-rooted rebellion in the hearts of humans

  23. to reject God as their ruler and want to rule on their own terms.

  24. In responding to this serious transgression,

  25. God certainly could have destroyed Adam, Eve, and the serpent and start anew.

  26. However, through his gracious actions in response to and on behalf of these people,

  27. we see the grace of our Creator.

  28. The fact that God instead chose to allow them to live is a manifestation of his grace.

  29. Running through Genesis and all through the Bible

  30. is the theme of grace showing God's mercy despite human sin.

  31. Genesis 1-11 forms a foundation of how we understand God

  32. and his works from creation to a new creation.

  33. The Bible is about God, our Creator and our Redeemer.

  34. What we can and should expect to learn about God from reading Genesis in the Bible

  35. is that God is gracious and merciful.

  36. The amazing things we can see from these chapters and all through the Bible

  37. is that God's grace increases as sin increases.

  38. Our short passage today illustrates God's grace perfectly.

  39. It demonstrates how God brings in his grace to alleviate the mystery that sin brings.

  40. Grace is God not treating his creatures as they deserve,

  41. but with kindness and mercy,

  42. providing something far greater than any expectation.

  43. God provides a couple of things in our passage today.

  44. The covering and the sword,

  45. and Adam and Eve ends up being outside of paradise.

  46. If you have the St. Paul's app,

  47. you can see these three points,

  48. and please follow along with your Bible open to the end of chapter 3.

  49. Today's passage from Genesis 3.20 begins with this word,

  50. Adam named his wife Eve because she would become the mother of all living.

  51. The Lord God made garment of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

  52. Previously in this chapter,

  53. Adam and Eve sinned against God

  54. by not trusting and following what God commanded.

  55. Instead, they listened to the serpent

  56. and each other without careful consideration or discussion.

  57. Humanity fell into sin because Adam's attitude towards God

  58. and his command and the action that followed.

  59. The immediate consequences was that Adam and Eve were filled with shame

  60. about their nakedness.

  61. In chapter 3, verse 7,

  62. then the eyes of both of them were opened

  63. and they realized they were naked.

  64. So they sewed fig leaves together

  65. and made a covering for themselves.

  66. That's the best I can do.

  67. They hide from the Lord when they visited them.

  68. In verses 10,

  69. they were fearful and ashamed

  70. and they pulled further away from God,

  71. the one who created and loves them.

  72. They tried to cover themselves

  73. by sewing up fig leaves together,

  74. which is only temporary and uncomfortable.

  75. So the very first act of grace after human fall

  76. was in verse 21.

  77. The Lord made garments of skin for Adam and his wife

  78. and clothed them.

  79. When it says God made garments of skin,

  80. what imagery do you have?

  81. Hopefully it's not God waving his hand like

  82. a magician saying abracadabra.

  83. That would be very far from the truth.

  84. The image behind this verse is very bloody

  85. because the animal was slaughtered

  86. to make that happen.

  87. God graciously provided for humans' needs

  88. in a way superior to what Adam and Eve

  89. had done with fig leaves.

  90. But in order to do that,

  91. something or someone else

  92. had to be the substitute.

  93. A life for a life.

  94. The consequence of Adam and Eve's sin

  95. is that God had to sacrifice

  96. some other of his creatures

  97. to cover for them.

  98. The use of animal skins

  99. anticipates the Old Testament system

  100. of animal sacrifice,

  101. which is another demonstration of God's grace.

  102. Why do I say that?

  103. Because without God's willingness

  104. to forgive and allow humans

  105. to approach him,

  106. no amount of sacrifice is enough

  107. to fulfill the righteousness of God.

  108. No amount of sacrifice by humans

  109. can buy God's forgiveness,

  110. which is what so many religious people

  111. wrongly think that they can achieve.

  112. Anyone who thinks they can do enough good deeds

  113. to repay for the wrong they have committed

  114. in thought and deeds

  115. against a creator God is delusional.

  116. The best man can do

  117. is to cover for our sins against God

  118. is a covering that's made with fig leaf

  119. against our naked body.

  120. We'll have to keep sowing the covering

  121. every couple of weeks,

  122. and it will only partially cover you.

  123. What God has made with animal skin

  124. will last forever

  125. and be much more fitting.

  126. The good news is that

  127. God covers Adam and Eve,

  128. and he will also provide cover

  129. for his people in the new creation.

  130. Paul spoke of a day

  131. that God will do that

  132. in 1 Corinthians 15, 53-54,

  133. and 2 Corinthians 5, verse 4.

    2 Corinthians 5:4

  134. God will clothe his people

  135. with immortality,

  136. providing the complete

  137. undoing of the curse

  138. of human sins.

  139. For the perishable must clothe itself

  140. with the imperishable,

  141. and the mortal with immortality.

  142. When the perishable has been clothed

  143. with the imperishable,

  144. the mortal with the immortality,

  145. then the saying that is written

  146. will come true.

  147. Death has been swallowed up

  148. in victory.

  149. For while we are in this tent,

  150. we're grown and unburdened

  151. because we do not wish

  152. to be unclothed,

  153. but to be clothed instead

  154. with our heavenly drawing,

  155. so that what is mortal

  156. may be swallowed up by life.

  157. Last Sunday,

  158. we explained how this victory

  159. covers sin

  160. and its curse comes about.

  161. Please check our website

  162. or our channel on YouTube

  163. for a further explanation,

  164. a fuller and further explanation.

  165. But in short,

  166. this victory over sins

  167. and its curse

  168. was made possible

  169. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  170. Jesus Christ is the Son of God,

  171. and he became the once

  172. and for all sacrifice

  173. that fulfilled God's requirement

  174. in dealing with the consequence

  175. of humanity's sin.

  176. Jesus was a substitute

  177. that God sacrificed

  178. to provide a covering

  179. for humans.

  180. Because of his death

  181. and resurrection,

  182. Christ has overcome

  183. the stain of sin,

  184. and he clothes all

  185. who believe and follow him

  186. with his perfect obedience

  187. and pure love

  188. towards the Father.

  189. Galatians 3, 26-29 says,

  190. So in Christ Jesus,

  191. you are all children of God

  192. through faith.

  193. Clothe yourself with Christ,

  194. for you are all one

  195. in Christ Jesus.

  196. If you belong to Christ,

  197. then you are hers

  198. according to the promise.

  199. Last Sunday,

  200. we also talked about

  201. God empowering people

  202. to resist the lies

  203. of the serpent

  204. to become Eve's offspring.

  205. God grants faith

  206. to those he chooses

  207. to enjoy eternal life

  208. with him.

  209. Colossians 3, 12-14 tells us,

  210. Therefore,

  211. as God's chosen people,

  212. holy and dearly loved it,

  213. clothe yourself

  214. with compassion,

  215. kindness,

  216. humility,

  217. gentleness,

  218. and patience.

  219. Bear with each other

  220. and forgive one another.

  221. If any of you

  222. has a grievance

  223. against someone,

  224. forgive as the Lord

  225. has forgave you.

  226. And over all these virtues,

  227. put on love,

  228. which binds them

  229. all together

  230. in perfect unity.

  231. God in his grace

  232. has provided the covering,

  233. the clothing of compassion,

  234. kindness,

  235. humility,

  236. gentleness,

  237. and patience.

  238. Paul says in 2 Corinthians,

    2 Corinthians 5:5

  239. chapter 5, verse 5,

  240. Now the one who has fashioned us

  241. for this very purpose

  242. is God,

  243. who has given us

  244. the Spirit

  245. as a deposit

  246. guaranteeing

  247. what is to come.

  248. God has fashioned us.

  249. He is our style.

  250. And God's style

  251. and fashion for us

  252. is Christ,

  253. who is the only person

  254. who has all this virtue

  255. plus love and forgiveness.

  256. When you are clothed

  257. with Christ,

  258. you will no longer

  259. be found naked

  260. and ashamed.

  261. God has forgiven humanity

  262. because Jesus

  263. took upon himself

  264. the punishment

  265. for all our rebellion

  266. towards our Creator.

  267. Jesus was clothed

  268. with our wrongs

  269. to cover for us.

  270. And as we put on Christ

  271. and be in Christ,

  272. and when God see us,

  273. he no longer see

  274. our trespasses,

  275. but we only know

  276. the honor and glory

  277. of his beloved Son.

  278. That is God's grace.

  279. After God made garments

  280. and clothed Adam and Eve,

  281. it says in verse 22,

  282. And the Lord God says,

  283. The man has now become

  284. like one of us,

  285. knowing good and evil.

  286. He must not be allowed

  287. to reach out his hand

  288. and take also

  289. from the tree of life

  290. and eat and live forever.

  291. So the Lord God

  292. banished him

  293. from the garden of Eden

  294. to work the ground

  295. from which he had been pecan.

  296. After he drove the man out,

  297. he placed in the east side

  298. of the garden of Eden,

  299. cherubim,

  300. and the flaming sword

  301. flashing back and forth

  302. to guide the way

  303. to the tree of life.

  304. This banishing

  305. and stopping of humans

  306. from reaching

  307. for the tree of life

  308. is a second act

  309. of God's grace.

  310. Because of sin,

  311. humans now know

  312. good and evil

  313. experientially.

  314. Humans will continue

  315. striving to define

  316. good and evil

  317. through voluntary

  318. and involuntary means.

  319. Humans will continue

  320. to sin

  321. and misuse

  322. their ability

  323. to define good

  324. and evil

  325. selfishly

  326. to benefit themselves.

  327. And they will keep

  328. incurring a penalty

  329. of death

  330. for their disobedience

  331. towards God.

  332. God stopping humans

  333. from reaching out

  334. to take and eat

  335. from the tree of life

  336. and live forever

  337. is an act

  338. of God's grace.

  339. The banishment

  340. and the expulsion

  341. were at the same time

  342. and act of mercy.

  343. Banning humans

  344. from the tree of life

  345. putting a limit

  346. to their physical life

  347. allowed for their redemption

  348. rather than for them

  349. to live in a life

  350. of perpetual sin

  351. in an unredeemed condition.

  352. The time limit

  353. on our life

  354. is God's gracious action.

  355. It's not just

  356. a reactive punishment.

  357. Paul tells us

  358. in Acts 17

    Acts 17:26–27

  359. verse 26 to 27,

  360. from a man

  361. God made all the nations

  362. that they should

  363. inhabit the whole earth

  364. and he marked out

  365. their appointed time

  366. in history

  367. and a boundary

  368. for their lands.

  369. God did this

  370. so that they might

  371. seek him

  372. and perhaps

  373. reach out for him

  374. and find him

  375. though it's not far

  376. from any one of us.

  377. God put a limit

  378. to our physical life

  379. so that we no longer

  380. reach for the wrong thing

  381. that will bring us curses.

  382. But instead,

  383. we can use the limits

  384. of our time

  385. to promise

  386. to seek him

  387. and reach out for him

  388. for he's not far

  389. from any one of us.

  390. Do you agree that

  391. when there's a deadline

  392. you are far more motivated

  393. and to get things done?

  394. A sword

  395. is often also

  396. related to judgment

  397. in the Bible.

  398. Knowing that

  399. there's a time

  400. we'll all give account

  401. can be scary

  402. or encouraging

  403. at the same time.

  404. Depends on how you

  405. have been living

  406. your life.

  407. At the end

  408. of his second letter

  409. Peter reiterated

  410. in chapter 3

  411. that God is not

  412. limited by time

  413. but he gave us

  414. an understanding

  415. of time

  416. and its limit

  417. so that everyone

  418. can come to repentance.

  419. And with repentance

  420. and the help of Christ

  421. we'll regain

  422. our access

  423. to the tree of life

  424. in the new creation.

  425. That is the picture

  426. we are given

  427. in the beginning

  428. of Revelation 22

  429. the last book

  430. and last chapter

  431. of the Bible.

  432. On each side

  433. of the river

  434. stood the tree of life

  435. and the leaves

  436. of the tree

  437. are for the healing

  438. of the nations.

  439. No longer

  440. will there be

  441. any curse.

  442. The leaves

  443. of the tree of life

  444. are for the healing

  445. of the nations

  446. and no longer

  447. will there be

  448. any curses.

  449. What a tremendous picture.

  450. The banishing

  451. and the flaming sword

  452. are both acts

  453. of God's grace.

  454. Since human sin

  455. the garden of Eden

  456. is no longer

  457. a paradise

  458. but a place

  459. remembered

  460. as where

  461. the first human foe fell.

  462. God had a new heaven

  463. a new earth

  464. prepared for those

  465. who he choose

  466. to be Eve's offspring

  467. to share in the victory

  468. over the crushing

  469. of the shepherd.

  470. God makes sure

  471. we do not get

  472. to the tree of life

  473. through the old way.

  474. So he put a flaming

  475. flushing sword

  476. to guide the way.

  477. The flushing

  478. flushing sword

  479. is a warning sign

  480. saying

  481. wrong way

  482. turn back.

  483. The word of God

  484. is described

  485. as a sword

  486. in the New Testament

  487. in Hebrews 4

  488. and Ephesians 6.

  489. The word

  490. becomes fresh

  491. in Jesus Christ.

  492. Jesus opened

  493. a new way

  494. to God

  495. for he is

  496. the only way

  497. for anyone

  498. who wants access

  499. to God

  500. and eternal life.

  501. Now that Adam

  502. and Eve

  503. have been sent

  504. out of paradise

  505. we see God's grace

  506. once again

  507. in chapter 4

  508. verse 1 to 2.

  509. Adam made love

  510. to his wife Eve

  511. and she became

  512. pregnant

  513. and gave birth

  514. to Cain.

  515. She said

  516. with the help

  517. of the Lord

  518. I have brought forth

  519. a man.

  520. Later she gave birth

  521. to his brother Abel.

  522. Now Abel

  523. kept flocks

  524. and Cain

  525. worked of soul.

  526. Eve gave birth

  527. to Cain

  528. outside of paradise

  529. but she said

  530. with the help

  531. of the Lord

  532. I have brought forth

  533. a man.

  534. God went

  535. with them

  536. into the banishment

  537. and expulsion.

  538. They were sent

  539. outside of the paradise

  540. but they were not

  541. cut off from God.

  542. God was there

  543. with Eve

  544. helping her

  545. in the midst

  546. of severe

  547. painful labor.

  548. Eve knew

  549. her child

  550. came into being

  551. with the Lord's help.

  552. God did not

  553. leave her alone

  554. outside paradise

  555. to face

  556. a consequence

  557. of her sin

  558. all by herself.

  559. God was there

  560. with Adam and Eve

  561. outside paradise.

  562. God is with them

  563. in every moment

  564. of their life

  565. and God will also

  566. be with you

  567. in your life

  568. and will not

  569. leave you alone

  570. to face your life

  571. and difficulties too.

  572. The experience

  573. of Adam and Eve

  574. is enlightening.

  575. They have sinned

  576. and when they sinned

  577. they recognized

  578. they were naked.

  579. They have been

  580. naked beforehand

  581. in a pure

  582. physical sense

  583. but they had not

  584. yet seen so

  585. they were not ashamed.

  586. After they become

  587. a sinner

  588. their nakedness

  589. becomes something

  590. more than merely

  591. physical.

  592. It becomes

  593. a psychological

  594. nakedness

  595. connected to

  596. their moral guilt.

  597. They were guilty

  598. before one another

  599. and before God.

  600. And what happened?

  601. God came

  602. walking in the garden

  603. to confirm them

  604. in their nakedness.

  605. He exposed the sin

  606. for sin cannot be

  607. hidden in his presence.

  608. But then he did

  609. something tremendous.

  610. He clothed them

  611. using skin

  612. from animals.

  613. He sacrificed himself.

  614. He kept them

  615. from reaching

  616. for things

  617. that would bring

  618. them curses

  619. and kept them

  620. from going back

  621. to their old way.

  622. This is the message

  623. of Christianity.

  624. We can be fully exposed

  625. and yet clothed

  626. and covered

  627. at the same time.

  628. Being clothed

  629. is not accomplished

  630. with the skin

  631. of animals.

  632. When God sent

  633. Jesus Christ

  634. to die for sins

  635. so guilt may be removed

  636. he made the most

  637. perfect covering

  638. for all humanity.

  639. Based on Jesus'

  640. perfect and

  641. atoning sacrifice

  642. God would then

  643. clothe all

  644. who believe in Christ

  645. with the Lord's

  646. righteousness.

  647. Because of Christ's work

  648. God no longer

  649. looks at us

  650. as sinners

  651. but as those

  652. who have become

  653. righteous in Christ.

  654. now we can stand

  655. before him

  656. rather than hide

  657. not because God

  658. has been in ignorance

  659. of our sin

  660. or has refused

  661. to care about it

  662. but because he has

  663. known about it

  664. and has dealt

  665. with it perfectly.

  666. Now we can cry

  667. with Messiah

  668. the prophet

  669. I will greatly

  670. rejoice in the Lord

  671. my soul

  672. shall exude

  673. in my God

  674. for he has clothed

  675. me with the garments

  676. of salvation

  677. he has covered me

  678. with the robe

  679. of righteousness

  680. with the Lord's help

  681. in God's grace

  682. we are no longer

  683. naked

  684. and no need

  685. for shame

  686. let's rejoice

  687. in the gracious God.

  688. for you

  689. for you

  690. You

  691. you
