  1. And let me add my welcome to the other welcomes here this morning.

  2. My name's Steve. I've never met you before.

  3. I've seen you past here at St Paul's.

  4. And what a great day to be gathering on this Christmas Day to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

  5. Christmas is huge. It's big.

  6. It is incredible that something that is started so small would grow into something as magnificent as it is today.

  7. So small that a poor, unwed teenage girl would give birth to a baby.

  8. And this day, 2,000 years later, around half of the world's population, 3.5 billion people celebrate Christmas.

  9. 160 countries in our world declare it to be a holiday season.

  10. That's over 80% of our countries in this world declare it to be a holiday season.

  11. To go from something so small to something so big points to something clearly very significant that's happening here on this very first Christmas Day.

  12. It's celebrated differently around the world.

  13. But one of the interesting things about Christmas, which we don't get in any other celebrations throughout our calendar year in the year,

  14. is the fact that the giving and receiving as gifts is so widely spread.

  15. You know, like birthdays or retirement, that sort of stuff.

  16. It's normally one person getting all the gifts.

  17. Whereas Christmas is about everyone involving and sharing the gifts.

  18. And it's pointing to the symbolic nature of the magnificence of the gift of Jesus Christ.

  19. Who he is and what he has come to do for our sake.

  20. That's what makes Christmas so, so big.

  21. And that's where we want to head today as we look at Matthew chapter 2.

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  22. It'd be great if you got your Bibles open.

  23. We want to see three personal gifts, three personal reactions, and one personal response to the person of Jesus.

  24. So three personal gifts.

  25. We read there in verse 11.

  26. Jesus, as a baby, received a bunch of gifts, three gifts from some strangers.

  27. Odd sort of thing.

  28. He gets gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh.

  29. As a poor peasant girl, Mary would have been fairly pleased, I'd imagine, with this.

  30. You know, like these are expensive gifts.

  31. And so this newborn baby comes with this extensive trust fund that would have been deeply encouraging for her.

  32. But these gifts are deeply personal and confusing at the same time.

  33. They reveal, in the end, three significant things.

  34. Who Jesus is, what he came to do, and how he did it.

  35. The gold that he receives points to the kingship of Jesus.

  36. Gold was a gift that was brought to an audience of a king in the ancient Near East in the first century.

  37. You didn't turn up to a king without a gift of gold.

  38. So the Magi, when they turned up, were expecting to see a king.

  39. Once upon a time when Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia, the nation, the grateful nation of Australia, gave her the 50th edition of Who's Who in Australia.

  40. That's the gift she received.

  41. Obviously, we really appreciate her.

  42. So they turn up to say, where is the one born who's to be born king of the Jews?

  43. And what alerted them to the arrival of a new king is in the second half of verse 2.

  44. We saw his star in the east and we have come to worship him.

  45. Now, the Magi were astrologers.

  46. They were magicians and interpreters of dreams.

  47. And in the ancient world, people believed in astrology.

  48. And so the Magi, in their culture, were considered the elite.

  49. They were the academics.

  50. They were the wise men, the professors.

  51. And when these guys saw the star, they really recognised in this moment that something significant was happening.

  52. Why is that?

  53. Well, in 44 BC, Julius Caesar, when he died, one of the most astonishing flukes in history, if you like, took place.

  54. A nova appeared in the sky above his funeral.

  55. And so from that moment on in the ancient Near East, stars were associated with great men and particularly rulers.

  56. And so these Magi are putting two and two together here.

  57. And so what would have particularly encouraged them to dust off their passports and head off

  58. was the strong rumour in the first century that there would be a change in world dominion.

  59. Rule would start to come out of centralised in Judea.

  60. Famous and diverse first century historians like Tacitus, Josephus and Suetonius all recorded this incident.

  61. It would have been not really much of a leap at all for the Magi to conclude that political changes were underway when they saw the star.

  62. And they set out on this long and difficult journey to find the ruler of the world and to offer him gold.

  63. But frankincense or incense was an unexpected gift.

  64. Because this gift was used by priests in the temple as they mediated between God and people.

  65. That is, frankincense was symbolic of relationship with God.

  66. And so the Magi were recognising Jesus at this point, not just as a king, but as a priest.

  67. The one who would mediate between God and humanity, the divine and a rebellious people.

  68. But the third gift would have really been something that would have thrown any brand new mother, the gift of myrrh.

  69. That's because in the first century ancient Near East, myrrh was the main ingredient for the embalming of a dead body.

  70. It's a symbol of death.

  71. And so the gift of myrrh is prophetic.

  72. The baby born a king and priest was a baby born to die.

  73. And that, in the end, is what was needed to bring about reconciliation between God and humanity.

  74. Jesus would die for the sins of humanity.

  75. The title, King of the Jews, is only used twice in Matthew's Gospel.

  76. Here at the birth of Jesus, again at the crucifixion of Jesus.

  77. Born a king who exercises his rule by sacrificing himself to bring us back into relationship with God.

  78. That's the three gifts.

  79. Who Jesus is, what he came to do, and how he would do it.

  80. And then, in this text, we see three reactions to the person of Jesus.

  81. One thing you notice in all the historical biographies of Jesus is that whenever Jesus turns up, he divides people's opinion rapidly.

  82. It's like he's this bowling ball.

  83. It just sort of smashes people's views.

  84. And see, here at the start of his life, we see three immediate reactions.

  85. And really, if you like, two groups, two camps forming already.

  86. One is full of praise and welcome.

  87. The other is full of hatred, opposition, and indifference.

  88. So first of all, we have hostile Herod.

  89. Herod lies through his teeth.

  90. Verse 8.

  91. Go and make a careful search for the child.

  92. As soon as you find him, report to me so that I too may go and worship him.

  93. Now, Herod has as much interest in worshipping Jesus as I have to take up knitting lessons.

  94. Which, you don't know me, no interest at all.

  95. Later in the chapter, we read Herod didn't fool the Magi.

  96. They sneak off a different way, telling, you know, without telling Herod where Jesus is.

  97. And he is furious.

  98. He is furious, Herod.

  99. So furious.

  100. He orders all the boys two years old and under in Bethlehem and all of its surrounds to be put to death.

  101. And Mel was right.

  102. I heard Mel there when she's reading the emotion associated with that.

  103. This guy is a brutal tyrant.

  104. A brutal tyrant.

  105. He was known to be brutal.

  106. Anyone who challenged his authority at all was murdered.

  107. He killed one of his wives and two of his sons.

  108. He's the Roman appointed king of the Jews.

  109. And he does not like the news that a king has been born.

  110. He is immediately threatened.

  111. And his response is hatred and fear.

  112. A hatred of anything or anyone that threatened his self-centeredness and autonomy.

  113. This account of deception and fear, bloodshed, injustice and homelessness are all too familiar.

  114. There is an awful lot wrong in our world today.

  115. One under the spectrum says that the reason there's so much problem in our world today is because of the rich and powerful.

  116. We need to blame the rich and powerful people.

  117. This world tends to make the poor, the minority groups in our world the heroes, the victims and the heroes at the same time.

  118. The other end of the spectrum are those who insist that it's the immoral, irresponsible people who are the main problem in our world.

  119. And this view of the world tends to make hardworking, decent, middle class people, the heroes of the world.

  120. And yet what we have here, and in fact the full teaching of the Bible,

  121. is that the source of evil in the world and the source of our problems in life,

  122. the underlying issue of everything,

  123. is in fact the human heart.

  124. Herod's reaction to Jesus here is just a glimpse of all of us.

  125. If you want to be king,

  126. you want to rule your life,

  127. autonomous over your life,

  128. and someone else comes along and says that they're king,

  129. then only one person has to give way.

  130. Only one person can sit on the absolute throne.

  131. And Jesus came into this world and in from his birth,

  132. his claim to be king,

  133. to be God,

  134. to be the ultimate ruler of all things.

  135. And throughout his life,

  136. he calls for an allegiance so supreme

  137. that it makes all other commitments in life look weak in comparison.

  138. It is a claim to absolute authority,

  139. a summons to unconditional loyalty,

  140. and it inevitably triggers deep resistance from every human heart.

  141. Who has the right to rule my life?

  142. That is the most disturbing question possible for any human heart.

  143. We want to remain on the throne of our lives at all costs.

  144. It's interesting how we do it.

  145. Some of us use religion to hold God at arm's length.

  146. We try to put God into a position where he owes us

  147. in some kind of way

  148. because, you know, we've been obedient

  149. or we do things for him.

  150. And so we want to,

  151. ultimately, we want to stay on control of our thrones.

  152. We want to be in,

  153. and we want to keep even God in our back pockets of controlling.

  154. So some of us use religion.

  155. Some of us flee from religion altogether,

  156. become atheists maybe,

  157. and they only proclaim that there is no God.

  158. Either way, we're expressing our natural hostility

  159. to anyone controlling, ruling our life,

  160. and particularly God.

  161. What is interesting here,

  162. if you read to the verse 19,

  163. Herod could not get rid of Jesus,

  164. even with an entire army at his disposal.

  165. In fact, verse 19 says,

  166. just very simply,

  167. Herod died.

  168. He died.

  169. That's Herod, hostile Herod.

  170. And then we have the passive priests.

  171. Their reaction is not as hostile as Herod,

  172. but it's just as negative.

  173. They're the ones who simply do nothing.

  174. He is a non-entity in their life.

  175. And this group is represented

  176. by the chief priests and the scribes.

  177. Verse 4,

  178. gathering together all the chief priests

  179. and scribes of the people,

  180. Herod inquired of them

  181. where the Messiah was to be born.

  182. They told him,

  183. well, this is what history tells us.

  184. This is what we know

  185. about where the Messiah,

  186. the king of the Jews,

  187. is to be born.

  188. He's going to be born in Bethlehem.

  189. They told him,

  190. these are the elite,

  191. these are the scholars,

  192. these are the Bible guys,

  193. and they said,

  194. here it is.

  195. He's going to be born there.

  196. And then it was back to normal for them.

  197. They didn't even so much as raise a sandal.

  198. Why not go with the Magi?

  199. This is your job after all

  200. to know where the Messiah is

  201. and when he's coming.

  202. Why not go with them?

  203. They knew it all,

  204. and yet they knew nothing.

  205. They knew their Bibles.

  206. They were the scholars.

  207. They had no problem in answering Herod,

  208. and yet they entirely missed God.

  209. Their apathy eventually handed

  210. into outright opposition to Jesus.

  211. In the end,

  212. their knowledge of Jesus

  213. and who he is

  214. made as no substitute

  215. for obedience to him.

  216. But the final reaction we see,

  217. and the only positive one,

  218. is the malleable Magi.

  219. It's the best word I could find

  220. to represent their response

  221. that starts with an M.

  222. I'm trying to get it all working out here.

  223. Their response is remarkable.

  224. Impressed by what they saw

  225. in the sky that night,

  226. they journeyed west to Judea

  227. to find out what it all meant.

  228. It is astonishing

  229. that these men

  230. with so little to go on

  231. should venture so far

  232. to endure such hardship in travel

  233. and face such uncertainty

  234. of finding the one

  235. to whom the star pointed.

  236. And what is more,

  237. they gave him costly gifts

  238. and the worship

  239. and the honour of their hearts.

  240. It is astonishing

  241. where the religious leaders

  242. expend no time,

  243. no energy,

  244. no expense

  245. or inconvenience,

  246. where Herod expended

  247. a great deal of time

  248. and energy

  249. and expense

  250. and inconvenience

  251. to try and find Jesus

  252. in order to kill him.

  253. The Magi expend

  254. a great deal of time

  255. and energy

  256. and expense

  257. and inconvenience

  258. to try and find Jesus

  259. so that they could worship

  260. and honour him.

  261. The Magi

  262. are the worshippers,

  263. the ones who joyfully

  264. ascribe dignity,

  265. authority

  266. and honour to King Jesus

  267. and whose lives

  268. are satisfied in him.

  269. Even if they did not know fully

  270. what they were getting into

  271. at this point,

  272. they went on the journey

  273. expecting to see a king,

  274. which is why they turned up

  275. to the palace

  276. in Jerusalem.

  277. Instead,

  278. they were directed

  279. to a king,

  280. not like Herod,

  281. a king,

  282. not a tyrannical ruler,

  283. not in a palace,

  284. not in a throne,

  285. but to a king

  286. in a manger,

  287. a baby,

  288. helpless,

  289. weak

  290. and humble.

  291. The kingship of Jesus

  292. is fundamentally

  293. different

  294. than the kingship

  295. of Herod.

  296. when Queen Victoria

  297. ruled as the British monarch

  298. in the 1800s,

  299. she controlled

  300. a third of the world

  301. at that point

  302. and one day

  303. she said

  304. that she couldn't wait

  305. to meet Jesus

  306. and she was asked

  307. why

  308. and her response

  309. was profound,

  310. so that I can cast

  311. my crown

  312. before him.

  313. Even Queen Victoria

  314. recognised

  315. that even as the,

  316. in fact,

  317. at that time,

  318. the most powerful person

  319. in the world,

  320. she too had a ruler,

  321. one who deserved

  322. her everything,

  323. even her crown.

  324. So there's the,

  325. there's the two,

  326. the three broad responses,

  327. indifference,

  328. hostility

  329. and worship

  330. and really

  331. they're,

  332. they're,

  333. they're divided

  334. into two camps,

  335. the positive

  336. and the negative.

  337. So I want to speak

  338. to two broad groups

  339. here today

  340. about what your

  341. personal response

  342. might be.

  343. Firstly,

  344. the Christians.

  345. Let me just say

  346. those who

  347. accept

  348. Jesus

  349. and Christmas

  350. and Christianity.

  351. If that is you,

  352. I think it's important

  353. for you to remember

  354. that

  355. every Christian

  356. still has

  357. a heart

  358. of residual

  359. anger

  360. and hostility

  361. towards God.

  362. Every one of us.

  363. and it will always

  364. be there to the end.

  365. And that is why

  366. it is so hard

  367. to pray,

  368. to give,

  369. to obey,

  370. to grow.

  371. There is still

  372. that Herod

  373. in each of us.

  374. There is still

  375. something in us

  376. that fights God.

  377. We cannot glide

  378. through

  379. the Christian life.

  380. We've got to be

  381. far more intentional

  382. about

  383. Christian growth

  384. to overcome

  385. all of those

  386. bad habits.

  387. which is why

  388. we keep talking

  389. about taking

  390. your next step

  391. here at St Paul's.

  392. But taking

  393. your next step

  394. knowing

  395. that the God

  396. who you are

  397. obeying

  398. is not

  399. Herod,

  400. a tyrannical ruler.

  401. He is a God

  402. of grace

  403. and mercy.

  404. A God

  405. who laid aside

  406. his glory

  407. as we have

  408. already sung

  409. this morning

  410. and descended

  411. humbly

  412. to serve us.

  413. That kind

  414. of king

  415. is calling

  416. you to follow

  417. him.

  418. Now,

  419. if however

  420. you're here

  421. today

  422. and you're

  423. unsure

  424. about

  425. Christmas

  426. and

  427. Christianity

  428. or perhaps

  429. even the

  430. existence of

  431. God,

  432. if there's

  433. one thing

  434. you want

  435. to hear

  436. from me,

  437. you need

  438. to hear

  439. this.

  440. you are

  441. not

  442. objective

  443. in your

  444. view.

  445. You are

  446. not

  447. objective

  448. in your

  449. view of

  450. Jesus

  451. and God

  452. and Christmas

  453. and Christianity.

  454. It is an

  455. absolute

  456. fallacy

  457. that anyone

  458. would say

  459. that they're

  460. objective.

  461. You're not.

  462. The

  463. philosopher

  464. Thomas

  465. Nagel,

  466. he's an

  467. American

  468. philosopher,

  469. he's an

  470. atheist,

  471. who's very

  472. candid about

  473. this point.

  474. He wrote,

  475. I'm talking

  476. about the

  477. fear of

  478. religion

  479. itself.

  480. I'm speaking

  481. from experience,

  482. being strongly

  483. subject to

  484. this fear

  485. myself.

  486. I want

  487. atheism to

  488. be true

  489. and are

  490. made uneasy

  491. by the fact

  492. that some

  493. of the most

  494. intelligent

  495. and well

  496. informed

  497. people I

  498. know are

  499. religious

  500. believers.

  501. It isn't

  502. just that I

  503. don't believe

  504. in God

  505. and naturally

  506. I hope

  507. that my

  508. belief is

  509. right.

  510. I hope

  511. there is

  512. no God.

  513. I don't

  514. want there

  515. to be a

  516. God.

  517. I don't

  518. want the

  519. universe to

  520. be like

  521. that.

  522. My guess

  523. is that

  524. cosmic

  525. authority

  526. problem

  527. is not

  528. rare.

  529. His point

  530. is,

  531. and which

  532. is why I

  533. respect him

  534. at this

  535. point,

  536. is that

  537. he's entirely

  538. honest.

  539. He's entirely

  540. honest.

  541. honest.

  542. Nobody is

  543. neutral about

  544. whether Christmas

  545. is true.

  546. Thomas Hagel

  547. is entirely

  548. honest.

  549. I don't

  550. want there

  551. to be a

  552. God who

  553. rules my

  554. life.

  555. I want

  556. to be

  557. Herod in

  558. my life.

  559. none of

  560. us are

  561. neutral

  562. about

  563. whether

  564. Christmas

  565. is true.

  566. If the

  567. Son of

  568. God was

  569. really born

  570. in a

  571. manger,

  572. then every

  573. single person

  574. has lost the

  575. rights to

  576. oversee their

  577. lives,

  578. if it's

  579. true.

  580. You cannot

  581. be objective

  582. about a

  583. claim like

  584. that.

  585. So just

  586. keep that

  587. in mind

  588. for the

  589. rest of

  590. Christmas

  591. Day,

  592. if that's

  593. where you

  594. sit at

  595. the moment.

  596. In other

  597. words,

  598. what I'm

  599. encouraging you

  600. to do is

  601. question your

  602. doubts.

  603. Doubt your

  604. doubts,

  605. if you like.

  606. Now I

  607. figure you've

  608. got a bunch

  609. of stuff on

  610. your plate

  611. in the next

  612. 24 hours,

  613. the next few

  614. days,

  615. but maybe

  616. soon you

  617. might want to

  618. look at that

  619. issue,

  620. come back to

  621. it again.

  622. Who is

  623. Jesus?

  624. What did

  625. he come

  626. to do

  627. and what

  628. did it

  629. cost him

  630. to do

  631. it?

  632. The

  633. Magi

  634. were the

  635. knowledgeable

  636. men of

  637. the East.

  638. They were

  639. the wise

  640. men,

  641. the sages,

  642. the elites,

  643. the academic

  644. elite,

  645. but their

  646. knowledge about

  647. the events

  648. of the

  649. first Christmas

  650. only took

  651. them so

  652. far.

  653. It only

  654. took them

  655. to the

  656. palace

  657. in Jerusalem.

  658. Jerusalem.

  659. Their

  660. observation

  661. of the

  662. star took

  663. them to

  664. Jerusalem,

  665. but that's

  666. it.

  667. The only

  668. way they

  669. got to

  670. Bethlehem

  671. was because

  672. of the

  673. scholars

  674. saying,

  675. the Bible

  676. says he's

  677. over there.

  678. They had

  679. to consult

  680. the Bible

  681. to find

  682. Jesus,

  683. and in

  684. finding

  685. Jesus,

  686. they found

  687. what they

  688. had been

  689. looking for

  690. all of

  691. their life.

  692. These wise

  693. men found

  694. the wisdom

  695. that they

  696. had been

  697. looking for

  698. all of

  699. their life.

  700. So I

  701. just want

  702. to say

  703. it without

  704. explaining

  705. it.

  706. I haven't

  707. got time

  708. to explain

  709. it,

  710. unpack it,

  711. and you'd

  712. be grateful

  713. for that

  714. right now.

  715. Jesus

  716. is the

  717. answer to

  718. everything

  719. that you've

  720. been searching

  721. for your

  722. entire life.

  723. There you

  724. go.

  725. I'm not

  726. going to

  727. unpack that

  728. any further

  729. than that.

  730. I just

  731. hope that

  732. sits.

  733. He is

  734. your goal.

  735. He is

  736. your destination

  737. in life.

  738. I'm hoping

  739. that encourages

  740. you to

  741. pursue that.

  742. Why would

  743. I make

  744. such an

  745. outrageous

  746. claim?

  747. I want to

  748. encourage you

  749. to be like

  750. these wise

  751. men and

  752. search for

  753. Jesus.

  754. But go to

  755. the source.

  756. The evidence

  757. is overwhelming

  758. and it is

  759. compelling.

  760. As Ash

  761. told us this

  762. morning,

  763. there are

  764. New Testaments,

  765. there are

  766. Bibles floating

  767. around everywhere

  768. in this

  769. place,

  770. out there

  771. in the

  772. free.

  773. If you

  774. haven't got

  775. one,

  776. take it

  777. and go.

  778. Take it

  779. and read

  780. it.

  781. Or there's

  782. a few

  783. copies of

  784. this,

  785. Is Christmas

  786. Unbelievable?

  787. Or there's

  788. other ones

  789. like Word

  790. Wonder.

  791. We here at

  792. St. Paul's

  793. would be

  794. delighted at

  795. any point to

  796. sit with you

  797. and to

  798. engage with

  799. those questions

  800. you have

  801. and to

  802. help you

  803. see why

  804. Jesus is

  805. the wisdom

  806. you've been

  807. searching for

  808. all of your

  809. life.

  810. And even if

  811. that means if

  812. you're online

  813. and you're at

  814. another part of

  815. this world,

  816. such as my

  817. mate Matt,

  818. who's currently

  819. in Utah,

  820. checking in

  821. for the

  822. service.

  823. You two

  824. guys in

  825. Utah,

  826. check in

  827. if you like.

  828. We'd be

  829. delighted to

  830. help you see

  831. why Jesus

  832. is the

  833. answer.

  834. So consider

  835. Jesus.

  836. That's the

  837. call for this

  838. Christmas.

  839. Ponder who

  840. he is,

  841. what he came

  842. to do,

  843. and what it

  844. cost him to

  845. do it,

  846. and what it

  847. means now

  848. to bow down

  849. and worship

  850. him 2,000

  851. years later.

  852. Merry Christmas.
