  1. A very good morning to you and also Happy New Year. We are only a few days into January and it is a real delight to be here today. I know many of you here. I've been a member here for quite a long time. I think I'm heading not far off 20 years, but it is a great joy to be here. I'm also on staff here, so a lot of you will know me in a far more operational capacity than what you see me here today.

  2. In fact, you won't know me in this capacity at all. I am definitely a case of a long time listener, first time speaker. I emphasise a little bit with Mary today as I have slightly been placed in the spotlight, so to say. So thank you very much for that, Steve. I appreciate that.

  3. But in all seriousness, though, it is actually a joy and a privilege to be asked to speak on Mary, Jesus' mother.

  4. And I hopefully will encourage you all, and Mary will encourage us all, to be inspired by her faith in what we'll see as really quite scandalous circumstances.

  5. So let's begin by having a little bit of a look about who Mary is.

  6. Mostly, we think of Mary at Christmas, don't we? We might see her in a nativity. I grab this from my nativity scene at home.

  7. That's generally where we might see Mary. We don't even really see her much in the shops anymore.

  8. Every now and again, you might see a little bit of a nativity scene. But generally, this is what we think of when we think of Mary.

  9. Mary. She's very much part of Christmas.

  10. And in fact, the Bible doesn't give us a lot of specific information about who Mary actually was in terms of a biography.

  11. Of course, the spotlight and the gospel tends to be more focused on her son, Jesus, and rightly so.

  12. And we don't actually hear anything about Mary until Gabriel, the angel, comes and speaks to her.

  13. Some things we do now about Mary is that she was a Jewish woman.

  14. She was probably born around 20 BC in Nazareth, in Galilee.

  15. And she would have been living in the first century Roman Empire.

  16. As a Jewish woman of this particular time, her path in life would have already been planned out for her.

  17. When we very first meet her, she's actually engaged to Joseph.

  18. And she probably wouldn't have been much more than 15, which is not very old.

  19. I have a daughter who's 15, so this story blows my mind every day.

  20. As a Jew, Mary would have been taught about and learnt to memorise the Hebrew Scriptures, which is also known as our Old Testament now.

  21. Jewish people had to know Scripture.

  22. They had to commit it to their hearts and their minds.

  23. They knew it inside and back to front.

  24. So she would have known about the promised Messiah.

  25. Mary is mentioned a few other times in the New Testament, but without much more insight as to who she is as a person.

  26. One key moment worth mentioning is at the wedding in Cana, where Jesus turns water into wine.

  27. In John chapter 2.

    John 2 chapter mention

  28. This event is actually quite a significant turning point in the relationship that Mary has with her son, Jesus.

  29. She shifts a bit from being his mother.

  30. She continues to be still his mother, but she takes on more of a discipleship and a follower role as he turns water into wine and brings on some miracles in his life.

  31. Mary was also at Jesus' crucifixion.

  32. And we do know that she was still alive when the new church began, and we can see that in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  33. After this time, there's no other mention of her in the Bible at all.

  34. We know that Mary had other children, such as James, who went on to lead the early church in Jerusalem.

  35. And while we don't have a lot of details about Mary's life, we know a lot more about her than we do about her husband, Joseph,

  36. which is incredibly significant and very unusual in this patriarchal society.

  37. As the most significant woman in the early Christian movement, quite a lot of speculation and legend has surrounded her.

  38. For instance, the Roman Catholic Church teaches that Mary was sinless.

  39. And as someone sinless, they teach that she would have been bodily raised into heaven before she neared death.

  40. And for some, she's actually even more significant than Jesus to the Christian faith.

  41. She is prayed to as the mother who has the ear of her son and can therefore intercede on behalf of those who pray for her, pray to her.

  42. However, if the Bible is our authority in these matters, and here at St. Paul's the Bible is,

  43. we hold fast to the truth that the Bible is the word of God here,

  44. then there's no explicit evidence or even implied assumptions that this is the case for Mary.

  45. The Bible encourages us to have a very realistic picture of who Mary was.

  46. She was a human in every way, just like we were.

  47. She's not to be elevated to any kind of demigod status.

  48. Mary is an engaged teenage peasant girl of Jewish heritage from a backwater nothing village in Galilee.

  49. She has absolutely no social standing, and she is well on her way to disappearing into a life of obscurity, just like most of us.

  50. And then everything changed.

  51. Our Mary of history is thrust into the spotlight, and her life takes a substantial shift.

  52. So let's have a look at what her life might have looked like as it takes a turn.

  53. Everything changed when she had a visit from an angel.

  54. This angel has informed her that she is going to have a baby.

  55. Now normally that would be a very exciting time.

  56. It's a moment of excitement, it's a moment of joy.

  57. You probably want to go share it with everybody that you know.

  58. And perhaps this was actually Mary's hope after she and Joseph settled down.

  59. Instead, Mary finds herself deep in the middle of a...

  60. Because this baby is going to be born out of wedlock.

  61. I just want to paint a little bit of a picture for you as what this might look like in Mary's day and in her society.

  62. Women in this culture who had children out of marriage could at the very best carry a very unpleasant stench-like stigma around with them for the rest of their life.

  63. Or at worst, it could actually bring physical danger, possibly even death.

  64. And would also extend to their husbands as well as probably their extended family.

  65. We see in Matthew 1 that even Joseph had decided to break off the engagement.

  66. He knew that if he married her, then they and their families would be shunned,

  67. and they'd always be suspected in their shame and honour society.

  68. So for her to accept this situation that the angel has presented,

  69. Mary knew that for the rest of her life, she would be stigmatised as that woman.

  70. And there is no indication as her life went on that this speculation or this gossip ever would have left her.

  71. It's not like everybody believed that Jesus was God's incarnate,

  72. and so Mary carried the stigma of being an unfaithful woman for her whole life.

  73. Who was going to believe a pregnant peasant teenage girl that God made her pregnant?

  74. And who was even going to believe an older woman, her relative Elizabeth, that the Holy Spirit made her pregnant?

  75. So just to add to this stigma in Mary's life,

  76. she also had the issue of being the mother of Jesus.

  77. I'm going to say that to raise the Son of God is probably going to bring about a fairly substantial amount of pressure.

  78. So after the scandal surrounding his birth,

  79. it is likely that many people around Mary would not have been very warm or welcoming as her life went on,

  80. because as Jesus grew older and throughout his life and throughout his ministry,

  81. Mary would have experienced speculation and disdain over many of Jesus' claims.

  82. And I think it's also helpful to remember that she was a normal human mother.

  83. She had normal feelings and she had normal emotions,

  84. and yet she was raising a perfect, sinless child.

  85. When Jesus was 12, his family was returning to Nazareth from Jerusalem after the Passover feast.

  86. A full day after leaving, they realised that Jesus was not with them.

  87. They lost the Son of God.

  88. And they took three days to find him.

  89. Now, if you are a parent or a carer of a child in any way,

  90. and you haven't laid eyes on them for a few minutes,

  91. you may know the feeling.

  92. The feeling of initial stress building up,

  93. to panic a little while after.

  94. Even if it's just a few minutes,

  95. it feels like hours.

  96. One of my children used to go and hide underneath the clothing racks when we were in the shops

  97. and couldn't find them.

  98. Zach, where are you?

  99. Can't find you.

  100. But eventually you find them.

  101. When you do, there comes this feeling of relief,

  102. but there is also this irritation, frustration that's going on as well.

  103. So you can imagine the frustration that Mary must have felt

  104. and how distressed she would have been after three days.

  105. So when they eventually located him back in the temple,

  106. she said,

  107. Son, why have you treated us like this?

  108. Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.

  109. Mary was hurt by what appeared to be the carelessness

  110. and the selfishness of Jesus.

  111. And while Jesus tried to explain to her,

  112. she actually at this stage still didn't understand.

  113. There were many times that Mary had to deal with the frustration

  114. of taking second place in Jesus' life.

  115. Matthew tells us of a time where she arrived at the house where he was teaching

  116. and the crowd was so large that she had to stand outside the house

  117. and just be patient and just wait quietly.

  118. There were many times that she just had to wait quietly

  119. while his ministry unfolded.

  120. And probably the worst for a mother,

  121. she experienced the grief and the horror of watching her son

  122. tortured and killed by crucifixion,

  123. the most horrendous way of death.

  124. In so many ways,

  125. Mary had to let go of what she treasured so much in her son Jesus

  126. so that he could fulfil God's mission.

  127. Mary was unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight over 2,000 years ago

  128. and she is still in the spotlight today

  129. despite us not knowing very much about her.

  130. We've just celebrated Christmas.

  131. Seems like a million years ago.

  132. It was only a couple of weeks.

  133. Around half of the world's population celebrate Christmas.

  134. It's the most widely celebrated holiday in the whole world.

  135. More than 160 countries declare it a holiday season.

  136. So Christmas is big.

  137. But it started very, very small.

  138. It started with a teenage girl

  139. in a nondescript town in the Middle East.

  140. And what the angel told Mary

  141. was a message that had been foretold for many years.

  142. This teenage girl was the very first person

  143. to get the message

  144. that the long-promised great salvation

  145. would come into this world

  146. through a baby born in Bethlehem

  147. and that his name would be Jesus.

  148. This Jesus is Lord of the Universe

  149. descending into time and into space

  150. to save humanity.

  151. Mary is the very first person

  152. to hear the good news

  153. in the form that we have it today

  154. and it's pretty incredible

  155. that our model for belief in Jesus

  156. is a teenage girl,

  157. an unwed peasant teenage mother.

  158. Mary is still in the spotlight today

  159. not just because she is the mother

  160. of the most influential person in history,

  161. but because of how she responded to him.

  162. And this is where we might see,

  163. this is where we see Mary's steadfast faith.

  164. With all that Mary was navigating

  165. from such a young age

  166. and right through her life,

  167. her faith is quite remarkable.

  168. Mary's first response to the angel

  169. is a healthy doubt.

  170. The assumption of many of our day

  171. is that religious people

  172. just don't ask questions.

  173. They just have a blind faith

  174. and they just turn their minds off.

  175. But this is not what Mary did

  176. and it's not what we should do either.

  177. When the angel showed up

  178. and greeted Mary,

  179. we're told in Luke 1

  180. of Mary's response.

  181. It says,

  182. Mary was greatly troubled at his words

  183. and wondered what kind of greeting

  184. this might be.

  185. Now to be clear,

  186. I have not studied

  187. any ancient languages at all.

  188. However,

  189. as I worked on this talk,

  190. I had a privilege of doing

  191. a bunch of research and reading.

  192. And during this time,

  193. a helpful point that I came across

  194. was that this word in the passage,

  195. wondered,

  196. in its original language,

  197. is an accounting word.

  198. It means to take an audit.

  199. It's a rational word.

  200. It means taking stock

  201. or weighing up arguments.

  202. And I felt it's important to clarify

  203. because when the angel showed up

  204. and Mary started to ask questions,

  205. her response is very thoughtful

  206. and it's very considered.

  207. It's the heart

  208. and it's the head

  209. working together.

  210. She has her doubts.

  211. She's asking questions.

  212. And this is so important

  213. because we can often assume

  214. that these ancient people

  215. are a little more ignorant

  216. than us modern people.

  217. In our modern arrogance,

  218. we just assume

  219. that former generations and ages

  220. were superstitious

  221. and that they believed anything.

  222. And yet,

  223. people back then

  224. had the same kind of IQs

  225. that we do now.

  226. They could think.

  227. Mary is responding

  228. in the same way

  229. that we would

  230. if an angel showed up

  231. and started talking to us.

  232. The difference between

  233. them back then

  234. and us now

  235. is that we have been trained

  236. not to believe

  237. in the supernatural at all.

  238. But Mary,

  239. as a Jew,

  240. had been taught

  241. not to think

  242. that God could possibly

  243. be human at all.

  244. And so be assured

  245. that the barriers

  246. that Mary faced

  247. for belief

  248. back then

  249. are just as big

  250. as the ones

  251. that we face today.

  252. But a combination

  253. of evidence

  254. and experience

  255. can shatter

  256. those barriers.

  257. It's interesting

  258. earlier in the chapter

  259. that an angel

  260. appeared

  261. to announce

  262. another miraculous birth.

  263. this time

  264. to Zechariah

  265. who was the father

  266. of John the Baptist.

  267. Now Zechariah

  268. also asks questions

  269. and he is very doubtful.

  270. The angel

  271. ends up striking him mute

  272. and he can't speak

  273. until his son

  274. is born.

  275. Mary's response

  276. to the angel

  277. is very similar

  278. but the angel

  279. blesses her

  280. and leaves.

  281. So what is that

  282. all about?

  283. Did Zechariah

  284. get a grumpy angel

  285. and Mary's

  286. was in a better mood?

  287. Not at all

  288. but what we have

  289. is the Bible's nuance

  290. on the issue

  291. of doubt.

  292. The Bible doesn't

  293. present doubt

  294. as being all bad

  295. or all good.

  296. There's a kind

  297. of doubt

  298. that is a sign

  299. of a closed mind

  300. and a kind

  301. of doubt

  302. that is a sign

  303. of an open mind.

  304. One kind

  305. wants answers

  306. and the other

  307. doesn't.

  308. Mary's doubt

  309. is the kind

  310. that wants answers.

  311. She is absolutely

  312. willing to get

  313. out of the driver's

  314. seat of her

  315. own life

  316. if she can be

  317. shown that the

  318. truth is other

  319. than what she

  320. thought.

  321. Zechariah's doubt

  322. was using questions

  323. as a way

  324. to stay in control

  325. of his life.

  326. Mary's doubt

  327. finally led to

  328. what we might

  329. call a cautious

  330. surrender.

  331. Her words

  332. in Luke 1.38

  333. are great.

  334. It says,

  335. I am the Lord's

  336. servant,

  337. Mary answered,

  338. may your word

  339. to me be fulfilled.

  340. She knows

  341. what she's

  342. being called

  343. into.

  344. She's about

  345. to have a child.

  346. Even if Joseph

  347. stays with her,

  348. people will be

  349. able to add it

  350. up.

  351. They had calendars.

  352. She lived

  353. in a traditional

  354. paternalistic

  355. society.

  356. She knew

  357. she would

  358. always be seen

  359. as the bearer

  360. of an illegitimate

  361. child.

  362. child.

  363. She was

  364. about to

  365. begin a life

  366. of disgrace

  367. and she

  368. says,

  369. I'll take

  370. it.

  371. I could

  372. only imagine

  373. that she

  374. was cautious

  375. but it

  376. was a

  377. surrender.

  378. When the

  379. angel said

  380. that she

  381. was going

  382. to give

  383. birth to

  384. a child

  385. and you

  386. will call

  387. his name

  388. Jesus,

  389. Mary knew

  390. right away

  391. that something

  392. significant

  393. was going

  394. on.

  395. Mary didn't

  396. get to do

  397. what is normal

  398. and right

  399. for a parent

  400. to do.

  401. She didn't

  402. get to choose

  403. the child's

  404. name.

  405. In every

  406. other normal

  407. case,

  408. the father

  409. and the

  410. mother have

  411. authority over

  412. the child.

  413. It is their

  414. right to

  415. name the

  416. child but

  417. not this

  418. child.

  419. If Jesus

  420. were to come

  421. into Mary's

  422. life or

  423. into our

  424. life, he

  425. would be in

  426. charge.

  427. He names

  428. us.

  429. We don't

  430. name him.

  431. He calls

  432. the shots

  433. for us.

  434. We don't

  435. call the

  436. shots for

  437. him.

  438. Mary says,

  439. I am the

  440. Lord's

  441. servant.

  442. May your

  443. word to

  444. me be

  445. fulfilled.

  446. Mary knows

  447. she is

  448. taking her

  449. hands off

  450. her own

  451. life and

  452. she is

  453. taking Jesus

  454. into her

  455. arms.

  456. Her

  457. surrender

  458. was willing

  459. and it

  460. was joyful

  461. even if it

  462. was cautious.

  463. She doesn't

  464. do it under

  465. duress.

  466. In fact,

  467. Mary heads

  468. off to

  469. visit her

  470. cousin

  471. Elizabeth.

  472. We see

  473. from verse

  474. 36 that

  475. she is

  476. miraculously

  477. pregnant with

  478. John the

  479. Baptist.

  480. When the

  481. pregnant Mary

  482. arrives at

  483. Elizabeth's

  484. house,

  485. John leaps

  486. inside of

  487. Elizabeth.

  488. While Mary

  489. is visiting

  490. her relative

  491. here,

  492. it is

  493. actually a

  494. meeting of

  495. the two

  496. children.

  497. Even as

  498. an unborn

  499. baby,

  500. John

  501. acknowledges

  502. that someone

  503. greater is

  504. in the

  505. room,

  506. so to

  507. speak.

  508. Elizabeth

  509. confirms to

  510. Mary that

  511. in fact Mary

  512. is carrying

  513. the Son

  514. of God.

  515. She says,

  516. blessed are

  517. you among

  518. women and

  519. blessed is

  520. the child

  521. you will

  522. bear.

  523. But why

  524. am I so

  525. favoured that

  526. the mother

  527. of my

  528. Lord should

  529. come to

  530. me?

  531. And at

  532. this point,

  533. Mary overflows

  534. with joy that

  535. God's promised

  536. Son and

  537. Rescuer is

  538. coming into

  539. the world and

  540. she breaks

  541. out in song.

  542. I'm not

  543. going to sing.

  544. It is a song

  545. that declares

  546. God is true to

  547. his promises.

  548. He is a

  549. merciful God.

  550. He is a

  551. powerful God.

  552. He is a

  553. God who

  554. turns the

  555. values of

  556. the world

  557. on their

  558. head by

  559. favouring the

  560. poor, the

  561. hungry and

  562. the lowly.

  563. So what can

  564. we take away

  565. from Mary

  566. here?

  567. Why are we

  568. looking at

  569. Mary now

  570. after Christmas?

  571. This poor

  572. teenage girl

  573. at the bottom

  574. of the first

  575. century social

  576. ladder is

  577. now known by

  578. the vast

  579. majority of

  580. people who

  581. ever lived.

  582. Not because

  583. she made

  584. herself great

  585. but because

  586. she humbled

  587. herself and

  588. she surrendered

  589. to the one

  590. infinitely greater.

  591. What is even

  592. more amazing is

  593. that she did

  594. this before

  595. she knew what

  596. the greater

  597. one was going

  598. to do for

  599. her.

  600. The Easter

  601. events tell

  602. us that

  603. everything Mary

  604. did for

  605. Jesus, Jesus

  606. had done for

  607. Mary but by

  608. infinite

  609. measure.

  610. We're told

  611. later in the

  612. New Testament

  613. that though

  614. Jesus is the

  615. creator, God

  616. of the universe,

  617. he humbled

  618. himself and

  619. he became a

  620. servant for

  621. all.

  622. He went

  623. lower than

  624. anyone before

  625. him.

  626. He became

  627. the baby of

  628. the lowest.

  629. The God

  630. whose power

  631. and might

  632. created the

  633. universe was

  634. cradled in

  635. the arms of

  636. the teenager

  637. that he

  638. made.

  639. This God

  640. took his

  641. hands off

  642. his life.

  643. Just before

  644. his execution,

  645. his prayer to

  646. his father

  647. was,

  648. not my

  649. will but

  650. yours be

  651. done.

  652. Just like

  653. Mary said.

  654. As we head

  655. into 2025,

  656. as we think

  657. of our own

  658. faith in God,

  659. as we consider

  660. the depth of

  661. our relationship

  662. with Jesus,

  663. this side of

  664. the cross in

  665. the 21st

  666. century,

  667. may we not

  668. fall lower

  669. or fall short

  670. of the faith

  671. that this

  672. first century

  673. unwed,

  674. peasant teenage

  675. mother from

  676. Palestine.

  677. We have more

  678. resources than

  679. Mary did.

  680. We live this

  681. side of Jesus.

  682. We have Easter.

  683. We have the

  684. ultimate reason

  685. to follow in

  686. Mary's footsteps.

  687. Mary didn't

  688. have the benefit

  689. of knowing that

  690. her son would

  691. die.

  692. that he would

  693. be resurrected

  694. and that he

  695. would repair

  696. the broken

  697. relationship

  698. between humanity

  699. and our

  700. creator God.

  701. We have that

  702. benefit.

  703. We have the

  704. benefit of

  705. God's gift to

  706. us over 2,000

  707. years ago.

  708. We have the

  709. evidence of

  710. Jesus' death

  711. and his

  712. resurrection and

  713. we have the

  714. evidence of

  715. his promise to

  716. this world

  717. fulfilled.

  718. We are able

  719. to see Jesus

  720. being a great

  721. servant.

  722. we have

  723. God's

  724. goodness.

  725. We have

  726. his kindness,

  727. his infinite

  728. generosity.

  729. We have the

  730. gift of the

  731. Holy Spirit.

  732. Mary believed

  733. the angel when

  734. he said in

  735. verse 37 that

  736. with God

  737. nothing is

  738. impossible.

  739. A poor

  740. 15-year-old

  741. near the bottom

  742. of the social

  743. ladder knew

  744. that if she

  745. surrendered to

  746. God she would

  747. fall even

  748. lower.

  749. yet her

  750. faith, her

  751. trust and

  752. her deep

  753. love of

  754. God allowed

  755. her to

  756. accept his

  757. plan.

  758. She humbled

  759. herself and

  760. she became a

  761. servant and

  762. she sings.

  763. In this

  764. scandalous

  765. situation,

  766. unsure

  767. situation,

  768. she breaks

  769. out in song

  770. and she

  771. spends time

  772. praising God.

  773. and for

  774. 2,000 years

  775. she has been

  776. celebrated as

  777. blessed.

  778. The way of

  779. greatness is

  780. the way of

  781. the humble

  782. surrender to

  783. the infinitely

  784. great one.

  785. So this

  786. year, as

  787. you consider

  788. your next

  789. step, please

  790. treasure Jesus.

  791. Open your

  792. heart and

  793. your mind.

  794. Echo the

  795. words of

  796. Mary over

  797. every aspect

  798. of your

  799. life.

  800. Let it be

  801. done according

  802. to your

  803. will.

  804. Amen.

  805. Amen.

  806. Amen.

  807. Amen.

  808. Amen.

  809. Amen.

  810. Amen.

  811. Amen.

  812. Amen.

  813. Amen.

  814. Amen.

  815. Amen.

  816. Amen.
