  1. Imagine that you are at school, for a while, a few of us.

  2. It's week four of school after the holidays and there is an impending assignment.

  3. And you are already thinking of the end of the school term.

  4. How about this one?

  5. You've come back from your Europe trip, day two, sitting at the work desk,

  6. sitting behind the digger maybe, and you're already scrolling webjet,

  7. planning for your next holiday or your next cruise.

  8. Does that sound familiar?

  9. We are all hungry for rest because at the bottom of this,

  10. you are yearning for more rest or perhaps what you want is respite from your work.

  11. And so therefore perhaps the rest that you are pursuing

  12. aren't actually the antidote to your problem.

  13. Your problem is a lot deeper.

  14. And so today we are unpacking rest and specifically God's vision for it.

  15. And by God's enabling, I pray that we might see and have illuminated in our hearts and minds

  16. the clarity of scripture that says rest is beautiful.

  17. Rest is a beautiful gift when you find it in Jesus.

  18. It's a resource to be stewarded regularly so that you might, like all the other rhythms of grace,

  19. behold Christ's beauty in your life.

  20. For that is what these rhythms are indeed about.

  21. If you think that all these rhythms are purely just doing it because Jesus says to do it,

  22. then you're missing out on the grace of Jesus.

  23. Reading the Bible is to gaze at God's glory, the wonder of Jesus who came to this earth.

  24. We gather right now as people who've been redeemed by Jesus to sing of the goodness of Christ the Redeemer.

  25. And so too, rest is an experience of God's grace.

  26. So let's pray.

  27. Loving Father, we thank you that you are the creator of all things.

  28. We ask that you might help us with our longing for rest.

  29. Lord, we want our life to seek the interests of Christ Jesus above our own.

  30. And by doing so, experience your promise of Jesus' purpose of coming for us to have life.

  31. Life to the full.

  32. Amen.

  33. So I've got three points.

  34. You'll find them also in the Paul's app, the outline there.

  35. Three points.

  36. Number one, the world story of rest.

  37. Number two, God's story of rest.

  38. And your story of rest.

  39. But let's think of the world story of rest.

  40. What do we see?

  41. Nearly 100 years ago, in 1930, John Maynard Keynes, an economist, suggested by the time

  42. that his children would grow up to be of working age, all people would be working only 15 hours

  43. a week.

  44. And so you'd think, you know, his grandchildren would work even less than that.

  45. I mean, that sounds pretty good, right?

  46. So let's do an inspection on that said generation.

  47. They did some research of his family and descendants.

  48. And they do this fun interview, and they talk about how long they're working for, right?

  49. And so the interviewer asks, so how many works a week are you, you know, working?

  50. And then the descendant says, yeah, I work 15 hours.

  51. 15 hours.

  52. That sounds like Keynes finally has made it.

  53. His family are actually succeeding.

  54. And then you realise he actually hasn't stopped the sentence.

  55. 15 hours a day!

  56. And his family even say that Keynes, before he died, did not take his own advice because

  57. he was busy, stressed and overworked, trying to solve, I don't know what, some economic

  58. crisis.

  59. And for you and I, I guess when we engage in small talk, there's this common phrase that

  60. you and I will hear.

  61. However, I'm good, but I'm busy.

  62. It's probably because you're trying to keep all the balls up in the air.

  63. You've got your family commitments.

  64. You've got your friendships.

  65. You've got your work, your health, your appointments.

  66. You've got church, wellness, extracurricular, sleep, eating, hobbies.

  67. And you can often feel so overwhelmed.

  68. And for me, when I get this inner agitation, I find myself blame work or some other externalised

  69. problem.

  70. And don't get me wrong, that could be the case.

  71. There are lots of things going on in life.

  72. There might be cases when it comes to work that your role gets overloaded.

  73. Maybe there are office politics.

  74. Maybe there are problems with colleagues.

  75. Absolutely.

  76. But is this always the case?

  77. Let me put it another way.

  78. If I were to tell you, go and rest, you are probably thinking, all right, all I just need

  79. to do is just nothing.

  80. Sit on the couch.

  81. Kids, go do your own thing.

  82. Watch Netflix.

  83. And for us, I think when it comes to stress management and rest from work, I wonder if our

  84. solution always tends to be to get rid of all the work things we do.

  85. So we will have more days off.

  86. We'll have a holiday.

  87. We'll plan for retirement.

  88. Maybe we'll eat some food to find some comfort.

  89. Maybe we drink alcohol to forget our problems.

  90. Even on your days off or those first few days on holidays, are you still restless?

  91. Still thinking about work?

  92. There's a sense that you're worrying about friendships, a charity organisation that is floundering,

  93. your financial stability.

  94. And even maybe for some of you, you're like, well, I haven't worked in like 20 years.

  95. Let's celebrate that for you.

  96. But even if you are retired, it seems that retirement doesn't resolve this restlessness.

  97. Have you spoken to someone with retirement plans?

  98. Keyword, plans.

  99. And they sometimes seem more busier than when they first started working because they've

  100. got all this limited time.

  101. They're like, let's cram it in with more and more and more.

  102. Because also, you know, they've been wrote by their children to take care of their grandkids.

  103. There's all these trips they want to go.

  104. They're the president of the Stamp Society.

  105. Who knows?

  106. Why is this the case?

  107. I wonder if it's because you are restless.

  108. The problem is not that you are just busy, but that your heart cannot rest.

  109. Forget about doing nothing or going on and doing your hobbies and your leisure.

  110. Because if you feel restless and your mind is ruminating on life and you have this regular

  111. depletion of your mental bandwidth because of all the noise in your head, doing nothing

  112. means nothing.

  113. So resting equally doing nothing is not the antidote to your restless spirit.

  114. But I wonder if the Bible has the best answer.

  115. There is hope here because I think the feeling and experience of restlessness that we have

  116. is a sign.

  117. It's a sign to turn to Jesus.

  118. It's a sign to turn to the one who says in Matthew 11, 28,

  119. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

  120. So let's look at the Bible's story of rest.

  121. And to understand the unfolding plan of God's salvation in the Bible, particularly on rest,

  122. we're simply going to put it in these three categories.

  123. Number one, creation.

  124. Number two, fall.

  125. And number three, redemption.

  126. So creation.

  127. The reason why we start talking about creation first because it's at the very beginning,

  128. imprinted at the very beginning into its narrative is rest.

  129. Now, if God is the creator of all things, he also creates rest.

  130. And if you know the creation account, it all begins in Genesis 1.

  131. God does the most amazing, wonderful, created, magnificent act.

  132. He creates the word purely from utterance.

  133. He speaks the very nature of creation into being.

  134. So God makes the world in six days.

  135. Then he does what?

  136. Genesis 2, verse 2, it says,

    Genesis 2:2

  137. By the seventh day, God had finished the work he had been doing.

  138. So on the seventh day, he rested from all his work.

  139. He rests.

  140. I think when you think of the musician who goes on tour and everyone gets dazzled by their music

  141. and the crowd wants more, what do they say?

  142. Encore.

  143. One more song.

  144. And you might expect that God is going to make more.

  145. No.

  146. God rests.

  147. But he doesn't rest from his work in the sense that he does nothing.

  148. It's the kind of rest that says he has finished.

  149. He's accomplished creation.

  150. God says, wow, about his work.

  151. His creation in 2, verse 3, he says,

  152. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,

  153. because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

  154. You see, God's picture of rest is so beautiful, isn't it?

  155. Rest is holy.

  156. Holy simply meaning set apart by God for his purpose.

  157. In other words, the day of rest is not just an experience that God has,

  158. but one that his creation, his world is to behold and experience.

  159. Because rest propels the rest of the story.

  160. In fact, God ordains rest as a part of the weekly cycle for his people.

  161. It's one of the Ten Commandments.

  162. It's Deuteronomy 5, verse 12.

    Deuteronomy 5:12

  163. It says,

  164. Observe the Sabbath day, the rest day, to keep it holy,

  165. as the Lord your God has commanded you.

  166. And Jesus later himself summarizes all the Ten Commandments into two sections.

  167. Matthew 22, verse 37.

    Matthew 22:37

  168. It says,

  169. And do you know where the Sabbath rests?

  170. That commandment.

  171. Where does that fall?

  172. In the two summaries.

  173. If you look closer in Deuteronomy,

  174. God informs Israel as to why they rest.

  175. What should they remember to encourage rest for the rest of your life?

  176. Deuteronomy 5, verse 15.

    Deuteronomy 5:15

  177. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt,

  178. and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand

  179. and an outstretched arm.

  180. Therefore, the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

  181. Love God.

  182. Love God.

  183. The centerpiece of the Sabbath rest in the Ten Commandments

  184. begins with who God is.

  185. You rest.

  186. You cease striving because of who God is.

  187. God is the one who saved the Israelites out of Egypt.

  188. They just needed to rest and lean into trusting in God.

  189. They did nothing.

  190. Absolutely nothing.

  191. They didn't part the Red Sea.

  192. They didn't change Pharaoh's mind.

  193. They didn't control him.

  194. It was all God.

  195. And so too by every other measure.

  196. God is sovereign and he sustains all things.

  197. That's the premise of rest.

  198. Yet we've already discussed,

  199. and we can simply see from the experience of our lives,

  200. of what we spoke earlier,

  201. that despite knowing the goodness of rest,

  202. we still feel restless.

  203. And there is a deep longing in our hearts

  204. that we are trying to fill.

  205. We're still yearning for this deep rest.

  206. And when there are the good days of work,

  207. there can also be plenty of weary and difficult days too.

  208. In Genesis 3 verse 17,

    Genesis 3:17

  209. we see the result of humanity's sin,

  210. that work is tainted because of brokenness,

  211. because of the brokenness of the world,

  212. work isn't perfect.

  213. And so of course, rest for our soul

  214. is also endlessly difficult.

  215. We're forever chasing the next high

  216. or wanting some fleeting escapism.

  217. We are chasing everything

  218. that God's rest was designed to fill,

  219. our longings.

  220. Augustine of Hippo said,

  221. our heart is restless

  222. until it rests in you.

  223. Friends, the good news is that this is not the end.

  224. You don't have to have the restlessness.

  225. There is one to look to.

  226. There is a future hope.

  227. If you are one who trusts in Jesus,

  228. you know that Jesus becomes the pinnacle to everything.

  229. He changes everything.

  230. And so too is Jesus the pinnacle of rest.

  231. If you don't know Jesus,

  232. my prayer is that you listen to this story,

  233. this wonderful story of Jesus,

  234. that it might bring encouragement,

  235. and curiosity of who Jesus is to you.

  236. So this story is about Jesus

  237. hanging out with two ladies,

  238. Mary and Martha,

  239. and we see this in Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  240. It's clear in verse 38

  241. that it is Martha, not Mary,

  242. Martha who invites Jesus in.

  243. So you might assume,

  244. oh, Martha is opening her house

  245. to the Lord and Savior of the world.

  246. She's doing the best thing.

  247. And understandably, hands up for me,

  248. when it comes to hospitality

  249. and people coming over

  250. and my house is a mess,

  251. I don't want anyone to be there.

  252. I want to make sure that everything's clean.

  253. So what does Martha do?

  254. She does homely preparation.

  255. Maybe she's cleaning,

  256. maybe she's cooking,

  257. getting a meal ready,

  258. who knows?

  259. But in her exasperation,

  260. she exclaims to the Lord,

  261. she's doing it all by herself.

  262. She says,

  263. Luke 10, 40,

  264. Lord, don't you care

  265. that my sister has left me

  266. to do the work by myself?

  267. Tell her to help me.

  268. Because surely if she doesn't do it,

  269. Mary won't,

  270. because all she's doing is lying down,

  271. hanging out,

  272. chilling at Jesus' feet.

  273. And what you must understand here

  274. is that Martha is doing practically

  275. what is expected of her,

  276. of her culture.

  277. What the world says is expected

  278. when a guest comes over

  279. is that, you know,

  280. you'd prepare the house.

  281. Probably not dissimilar to us now.

  282. And so Jesus responds

  283. with something contrary

  284. to what the world expects of her.

  285. Luke 10, 41 to 42.

  286. Martha, Martha,

  287. the Lord answered.

  288. You are worried

  289. and upset

  290. about many things.

  291. But few things are needed.

  292. Or indeed,

  293. only one.

  294. This is the king

  295. who removes all pretenses

  296. and just wishes

  297. to be in relationship

  298. throughout all the mess.

  299. Don't worry about

  300. all the preparations

  301. for when there is time

  302. with Jesus.

  303. Nothing else matters.

  304. Sit and gaze

  305. at the glory of Jesus,

  306. God who is condescended.

  307. Only one thing matters.

  308. Notice again

  309. how clearly Jesus

  310. is trying to speak to her.

  311. Martha,

  312. Martha,

  313. you are worried

  314. and upset.

  315. Friends,

  316. Martha's issue

  317. is not simply

  318. that she's doing things.

  319. In fact,

  320. notice that Jesus

  321. doesn't even talk

  322. about her actions at all.

  323. It's that she's worried

  324. and upset.

  325. She's restless.

  326. When faced with the image

  327. of the invisible God,

  328. the firstborn over all creation,

  329. instead of hanging out with him,

  330. she goes and does something

  331. that is probably good.

  332. It's important,

  333. but it's not the best.

  334. In our claims

  335. for doing good

  336. and seemingly important things,

  337. making our kids happy

  338. by taking them

  339. to every extracurricular

  340. there is under the sun,

  341. appeasing the boss

  342. with the phone of our...

  343. The boss calls us

  344. during a non-emergency,

  345. and we answer the phone

  346. on a rest day.

  347. We have to ask,

  348. is it the best thing

  349. I could be doing

  350. with my time?

  351. Good is good,

  352. but are you living

  353. in the best?

  354. Is your calendar

  355. filled with good options

  356. that overshadows the best?

  357. Jesus is the greatest best

  358. you can choose.

  359. In fact,

  360. the Bible says

  361. in the passage

  362. that was read out for us

  363. in Hebrews 4,

  364. chapter 1 to 11,

  365. starts by saying,

  366. verse 1,

  367. therefore,

  368. since the promise

  369. of entering his rest

  370. still stands,

  371. let us be careful

  372. that none of you

  373. be found to have

  374. fallen short of it.

  375. The writer of Hebrews here

  376. is pretty much saying,

  377. there are all these people

  378. who were trying

  379. to enter the rest of God,

  380. but this ultimate rest

  381. and peace

  382. that they wanted,

  383. they were not able to have.

  384. In verse 2,

  385. it says,

  386. for we also

  387. have had the good news.

  388. The implication here

  389. is that the good news,

  390. the gospel,

  391. leads to rest.

  392. The good news

  393. for God's chosen people

  394. now and then

  395. is rest.

  396. But how do we receive

  397. the gospel's promise

  398. of this rest?

  399. full verse 10,

  400. for anyone

  401. who enters

  402. God's rest

  403. also rests

  404. from their work.

  405. You rest from your work.

  406. Why?

  407. It's because Jesus

  408. died on the cross.

  409. It's his great work.

  410. It's his great accomplishment.

  411. He was the one

  412. who said,

  413. it is finished.

  414. You don't need to work.

  415. You can't work

  416. to earn God's favor.

  417. You rest.

  418. Jesus worked

  419. so you could rest.

  420. You see,

  421. if Jesus is the one

  422. who died on the cross,

  423. you don't need to do anything.

  424. That is grace.

  425. It is the undeserved gift

  426. that Christ paid for.

  427. You didn't earn it.

  428. It was simply a gift

  429. for you to receive.

  430. And if that is

  431. Jesus' grace,

  432. then there is actually

  433. a logical conclusion

  434. you can make about rest.

  435. The logic of grace

  436. is simple as this.

  437. If you have received

  438. the grace of our Lord Jesus,

  439. then you rest.

  440. in Jesus.

  441. Your rest begun

  442. when you first took

  443. a glimpse of the gospel.

  444. For you trusted in Jesus

  445. and not your works.

  446. The logic of grace

  447. is rest.

  448. If this,

  449. then that.

  450. If grace,

  451. then rest.

  452. Now,

  453. when it comes to

  454. the story of our rest,

  455. your rest,

  456. I think it's important

  457. to understand

  458. what you are resting from.

  459. And I hope that

  460. as we were talking

  461. about the world story

  462. of rest,

  463. it was clear that

  464. what we are to rest

  465. from is work.

  466. But what exactly

  467. qualifies as work?

  468. Spicy topic,

  469. I know.

  470. What is work?

  471. And I want to hold

  472. loosely to this definition,

  473. but for this exercise,

  474. let's call work

  475. success

  476. or striving.

  477. We're in an aspirational

  478. culture here in Chatswood,

  479. and so I just want to ask you,

  480. what is it

  481. that you are striving for?

  482. How are you trying

  483. to make it in this world?

  484. What things are you doing

  485. to bring you purpose

  486. and meaning?

  487. Because maybe you're not

  488. working,

  489. employed by a boss.

  490. Maybe you're self-employed.

  491. Maybe you're the parent

  492. at home.

  493. Or you are studying

  494. or you are retired.

  495. People might not think

  496. it's work.

  497. But let's go

  498. with our definition

  499. of work.

  500. What is it that you invest

  501. your energy,

  502. your mind and your heart,

  503. your resources towards?

  504. That's your work.

  505. That's where you need rest.

  506. You need rest

  507. from the Martha heart

  508. that cannot stop worrying.

  509. Have you gotten

  510. to the end of the day?

  511. Gone to bed

  512. and still just been wired?

  513. Do you feel like

  514. you are in this

  515. endless cycle of working

  516. because you are

  517. defining yourself

  518. in what you do?

  519. I need not just a body

  520. that can cease striving,

  521. but a heart

  522. that stops worrying too.

  523. You can believe

  524. that you are saved

  525. by your works,

  526. but be in a habitual pattern

  527. of physically,

  528. emotionally,

  529. mentally exhausting

  530. your head,

  531. heart and hands

  532. by striving for your own

  533. agenda

  534. and what you are

  535. contending for.

  536. And some of us

  537. know this.

  538. Ephesians 2,

  539. 8 to 10,

  540. for it is by grace

  541. you have been saved,

  542. not by works.

  543. So,

  544. why is it

  545. that you suddenly

  546. are striving

  547. for everything else

  548. in life?

  549. And it makes sense

  550. logically.

  551. The reason why

  552. you strive and worry

  553. for everyone

  554. is because maybe

  555. if you don't do it,

  556. no one else will.

  557. Your boss,

  558. your friend,

  559. your parents,

  560. your spouse,

  561. your child doesn't care.

  562. And so,

  563. if you don't do it,

  564. no one will.

  565. And I can tell you

  566. all the theological reasons

  567. as to why rest

  568. is a good thing,

  569. but what is firmly

  570. lodged in your heart

  571. and mind

  572. is that you've got

  573. to be the one

  574. who holds

  575. everything together.

  576. but what if I told you

  577. there is someone

  578. who has,

  579. someone who is in fact

  580. holding and sustaining

  581. everything together.

  582. Colossians 1,

  583. 15 to 20 says

  584. that not only was Jesus

  585. there in the beginning

  586. of creation,

  587. but he too

  588. is the sustainer

  589. of all things.

  590. The reason that you

  591. are successful

  592. by any measure,

  593. the reason you have riches

  594. is because God

  595. has given it to you,

  596. not because you're pretty,

  597. not because you're smart,

  598. not because you're needy

  599. or a hard worker,

  600. it's because God

  601. is a generous God.

  602. You've got to remember

  603. that God

  604. can do it

  605. better than you.

  606. He's a better sustainer

  607. than you.

  608. It all comes down

  609. to who he is,

  610. doesn't it?

  611. What good news

  612. is that?

  613. Remember Jesus.

  614. He is not your fountain

  615. that begun

  616. your journey

  617. with Christ.

  618. He is the ocean

  619. by which everything

  620. has been formed

  621. and is still sustained.

  622. Your marriage

  623. is sustained by Jesus.

  624. Your super fund,

  625. your retirement plan,

  626. your mortgage

  627. is not solved by you,

  628. but by Jesus.

  629. And I think there are

  630. four intrusive thoughts

  631. you might be telling

  632. yourselves

  633. which are not true

  634. for the one

  635. who trusts in Jesus.

  636. I am what I do.

  637. I need to prove myself.

  638. My meaning

  639. is from

  640. what I do.

  641. And if I don't do it,

  642. no one else will.

  643. For me,

  644. there are places

  645. where I have

  646. this disbelieving power

  647. and I disbelieve

  648. the gospel

  649. in my life.

  650. I must admit

  651. for you

  652. that stopping

  653. is not actually

  654. something that I'm

  655. very good at.

  656. In fact,

  657. I must confess,

  658. yesterday we had

  659. a training session

  660. here for our

  661. youth leaders

  662. and I was telling

  663. a few people,

  664. oh yeah,

  665. I'm preaching

  666. on rest tomorrow.

  667. And they're like,

  668. um,

  669. Ash,

  670. isn't Saturday

  671. your Sabbath?

  672. And when it comes

  673. to busy weeks

  674. like this,

  675. I find I can be

  676. prayerless

  677. because I feel

  678. like I have to

  679. work on my own

  680. strength.

  681. Or even worse,

  682. I might overwork

  683. myself

  684. because I must

  685. do it myself.

  686. But friend,

  687. Ash,

  688. you cannot

  689. lean into Jesus,

  690. stop and come

  691. to the foot

  692. of the cross

  693. and lean on

  694. his sovereignty,

  695. provision,

  696. and kindness

  697. to you.

  698. But you might

  699. have a different

  700. intrusive thought

  701. and we need

  702. to be actively

  703. preaching gospel

  704. truths,

  705. gospel glue

  706. in your brain.

  707. If you believe

  708. on the screen,

  709. I am what I do,

  710. trust in the

  711. better news

  712. that you are

  713. who God

  714. says you are,

  715. a beloved

  716. child of God.

  717. If you believe

  718. in I need to

  719. prove myself,

  720. know that

  721. the gospel

  722. reality is that

  723. you have

  724. already been

  725. justified,

  726. you have been

  727. made right

  728. with God

  729. by faith in

  730. Christ.

  731. If you're

  732. hearing,

  733. my meaning

  734. is from what

  735. I do,

  736. my prayer

  737. is that you

  738. experience that

  739. the good news

  740. makes really

  741. clear your

  742. purpose in life

  743. is to glorify

  744. God and enjoy

  745. him forever.

  746. If you have

  747. this anxious

  748. feeling,

  749. the one that

  750. I get often,

  751. if I don't

  752. do it,

  753. no one else

  754. will,

  755. brother,

  756. sister,

  757. remember that

  758. Jesus has

  759. done it all

  760. and all that

  761. is necessary,

  762. the most

  763. important thing

  764. on the cross.

  765. He's dealt

  766. with your sin

  767. and punishment.

  768. Friends,

  769. preach the gospel

  770. to yourself

  771. regularly.

  772. And so,

  773. lastly,

  774. there's just

  775. three tips I

  776. just hope

  777. will propel

  778. you into

  779. having rest

  780. weekly,

  781. making it a

  782. rhythm in

  783. your life.

  784. Good is

  785. the enemy

  786. of best.

  787. Your most

  788. powerful verbal

  789. tool you

  790. might actually

  791. have is the

  792. ability to

  793. say no.

  794. Because every

  795. time you say

  796. yes to

  797. something,

  798. you're actually

  799. saying no

  800. to another.

  801. Matthew 5,

  802. 37,

  803. let your

  804. yes be yes

  805. and your

  806. no be no.

  807. Your no

  808. means your

  809. biggest yes

  810. to what truly

  811. matters.

  812. Reality is,

  813. you and I

  814. are finite

  815. beings and we

  816. can't do

  817. everything.

  818. In fact,

  819. I've got

  820. printed on

  821. the side

  822. of church

  823. over there

  824. a reflection

  825. document,

  826. a time

  827. audit to

  828. help you

  829. reflect on

  830. biblical

  831. principles and

  832. priorities and

  833. understand your

  834. time and

  835. where it's

  836. going and

  837. to help you

  838. run for

  839. the best

  840. yes.

  841. Quick

  842. side note,

  843. make sure

  844. you're saying

  845. no to the

  846. things,

  847. sorry,

  848. restart,

  849. make sure

  850. you are not

  851. saying no

  852. to the

  853. things that

  854. propel

  855. God's

  856. mission.

  857. You're

  858. why that's

  859. driven by

  860. God's word.

  861. And I

  862. wonder,

  863. too often

  864. we get so

  865. tired and

  866. then we're

  867. forced to

  868. rest by our

  869. bodies and

  870. say no to

  871. the things

  872. that we are

  873. commanded by

  874. God to do.

  875. Even I need

  876. to ask myself,

  877. Ash,

  878. why did you

  879. overcommit?

  880. Maybe you

  881. shouldn't have

  882. said yes to

  883. all that

  884. training and

  885. that party

  886. if it

  887. meant you

  888. weren't able

  889. to rest and

  890. you were

  891. preaching the

  892. next day.

  893. Good is

  894. the enemy

  895. of best.

  896. Number two,

  897. preach the

  898. gospel to

  899. yourself.

  900. If you

  901. want that

  902. hope of

  903. non-restlessness,

  904. those four

  905. things that we

  906. spoke about

  907. before,

  908. preach the

  909. gospel against

  910. those four

  911. things.

  912. Read the

  913. Psalms like

  914. chapter 46

  915. verse 10,

  916. be still and

  917. know that I

  918. am God.

  919. Rest by

  920. knowing who

  921. God is.

  922. Rest knowing

  923. he is your

  924. redeemer.

  925. You don't

  926. need to

  927. prove yourself

  928. to him

  929. anymore.

  930. He likes

  931. you as you

  932. are.

  933. He is

  934. sovereign.

  935. He is the

  936. sustainer of

  937. all things.

  938. Put your

  939. work phone

  940. and emails

  941. down.

  942. Stop

  943. pottering in

  944. the kitchen.

  945. Let someone

  946. else do it.

  947. The world

  948. expects you to

  949. have your

  950. kids that

  951. are successful

  952. and happy,

  953. but all they

  954. need is

  955. Jesus.

  956. Model that

  957. rest for

  958. them.

  959. Be still.

  960. And lastly,

  961. book in

  962. time to

  963. rest and

  964. create a

  965. rest

  966. action plan.

  967. In your

  968. magazines,

  969. you'll see

  970. that there

  971. is a

  972. helpful

  973. crawl,

  974. walk,

  975. and run

  976. table.

  977. And from

  978. what we've

  979. already gathered

  980. about rest,

  981. it is clear

  982. that it is

  983. both ceasing

  984. your strivings,

  985. but a

  986. worship of

  987. Jesus.

  988. And so

  989. your day

  990. of rest

  991. should be

  992. ceasing,

  993. delighting,

  994. and

  995. worshiping.

  996. Perhaps

  997. you are

  998. really good

  999. at the

  1000. ceasing

  1001. bit,

  1002. but not

  1003. the

  1004. worshiping

  1005. bit.

  1006. And

  1007. vice

  1008. versa.

  1009. And if

  1010. you're

  1011. stuck on

  1012. things to

  1013. do on

  1014. your rest

  1015. day,

  1016. here's

  1017. three ideas

  1018. for you.

  1019. Number

  1020. one,

  1021. creation.

  1022. Go out

  1023. and have

  1024. a look

  1025. at the

  1026. sky,

  1027. the heavens,

  1028. the trees,

  1029. and see how

  1030. magnificent God

  1031. is.

  1032. Be in awe

  1033. and wonder

  1034. of him.

  1035. Second,

  1036. avocation,

  1037. not avocado.

  1038. Anti-work,

  1039. a

  1040. vocation.

  1041. What do

  1042. you do

  1043. for your

  1044. works and

  1045. strivings?

  1046. Do the

  1047. opposite.

  1048. If it's

  1049. your hands,

  1050. read a

  1051. book.

  1052. Join a

  1053. book club.

  1054. If you

  1055. use your

  1056. mind for

  1057. work,

  1058. do a

  1059. painting.

  1060. Learn

  1061. to knit.

  1062. If your

  1063. work involves

  1064. you by

  1065. yourself,

  1066. maybe serve

  1067. in a team.

  1068. Join a

  1069. soup kitchen.

  1070. Engross

  1071. yourself with

  1072. being with

  1073. God's

  1074. people.

  1075. And three,

  1076. reflecting.

  1077. Think.

  1078. Consider how

  1079. God has

  1080. been changing

  1081. you over

  1082. the last

  1083. few days,

  1084. weeks,

  1085. and months.

  1086. How has

  1087. he been

  1088. doing it

  1089. by teaching

  1090. you from

  1091. his word?

  1092. Maybe the

  1093. circumstances

  1094. he's placed

  1095. you in.

  1096. What is

  1097. he teaching

  1098. you?

  1099. How are

  1100. you tracking

  1101. in your

  1102. relationship

  1103. with him?

  1104. Now,

  1105. over to

  1106. you.

  1107. What might

  1108. you consider

  1109. helpful for

  1110. resting in

  1111. Jesus?

  1112. On the

  1113. screen,

  1114. you are

  1115. going to

  1116. see three

  1117. questions on

  1118. ceasing,

  1119. delighting,

  1120. and

  1121. worshipping

  1122. to ponder.

  1123. And then

  1124. the band

  1125. will come

  1126. up in

  1127. a few

  1128. minutes.

  1129. But what

  1130. I want

  1131. you to do

  1132. is take

  1133. some time

  1134. to jot

  1135. something

  1136. down.

  1137. Thank you.
