  1. Well, good morning, everyone.

  2. Great to see you.

  3. If I've not met you before, my name is Steve,

  4. lead pastor here at St Paul's.

  5. And you have caught us in the middle of this series

  6. or towards the end of this series on rhythms of grace.

  7. And we come to the one which is the one

  8. we particularly don't want to talk about in our day and age,

  9. and that has to do with money and giving,

  10. probably because it's one of the biggest idolatries

  11. of our day and age.

  12. It's deeply connected to who we are as people.

  13. So let me pray because this one probably tends to be

  14. the most difficult one for us to hear.

  15. And as I preach, the tendency will be to listen

  16. to the voices in my heart and the voice of society

  17. coming up with all kinds of excuses and reasons

  18. and justifications as to why we don't need

  19. to obey God's word at this point.

  20. So let's pray.

  21. Gracious God, you are magnificent.

  22. You are worthy of all of our honour and praise.

  23. You are the God who has called us,

  24. who has made us and called us as your people

  25. into obedience to you.

  26. Lord, you have gifted us with everything good.

  27. You are a radically generous God.

  28. You are the God who owns all things,

  29. and you have called us to be your stewards.

  30. And yet we are existing in a day and age and a culture

  31. with hearts that love to build our identity

  32. on all sorts of things,

  33. but primarily in this day and age

  34. on the accumulation of things,

  35. of wealth and security.

  36. We love the idea of security.

  37. We love the idea of comfort.

  38. And so, Lord, challenge us that we might lean into you more

  39. and that we might experience your generosity

  40. and joy in you more.

  41. So let us hear your word today.

  42. We pray for whatever is needed for each heart that is gathered,

  43. that you would speak through your word,

  44. by your spirit and bring change.

  45. And we ask it for your glory.

  46. Amen.

  47. It's a well-sighted fact that in the three years

  48. of Jesus' earthly ministry,

  49. he said more about money and possessions and greed and wealth

  50. than he did about faith or sex or family or anything else.

  51. And that in a day and age,

  52. which was when under Roman oppression,

  53. where the family unit and the idea of society

  54. as a collective unit was prominent

  55. in the way that they, in terms of their value system,

  56. and yet he spoke more about money

  57. than he did about anything else.

  58. One-third of his parables are on the topic of money.

  59. Our perspective on money and possessions and wealth

  60. and how we handle them,

  61. therefore, lies at the very heart of Christian discipleship,

  62. which is the concern that we have at the moment

  63. for our vision series.

  64. What we do with our resources will influence eternity.

  65. And God has recorded in the Bible

  66. everything that we need to know about his investment priorities.

  67. What does it mean to be a steward of the resources

  68. that he's given us?

  69. He's recorded everything we need to know

  70. about the high standards he has set for management

  71. and the rewards that he offers his faithful stewards.

  72. The New Testament gives us plenty of examples

  73. of the good that is done by a life of financial generosity.

  74. 2 Corinthians 8 and 9,

  75. we see that sacrificial giving is acceptable to God

  76. in verses 11 and 12.

  77. It supplies the needs of others and relieves hardship

  78. in verses 14 and 15.

  79. It stirs up generosity in others in chapter 9, verse 2.

  80. It enhances Christian fellowship and partnership

  81. in chapter 9, verse 14.

  82. And it leads to the praise of God in chapter 9, verses 12 to 15.

  83. But it is what financial generosity does to our own hearts,

  84. our own lives, that is just as important

  85. and why we would include it in our list of rhythms of grace,

  86. Christian disciplines, holy habits,

  87. that it should be a regular thing that we are constantly practicing

  88. to drive the big truths of God down into our heart

  89. and out into the way we view the world.

  90. So Jesus connects our hearts and our wealth

  91. when he encouraged his disciples

  92. to store up for themselves treasures in heaven in Matthew 6.

  93. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  94. And wherever your heart is will drive the course of your life,

  95. what your value, what your priorities are,

  96. how you behave, what you commit to,

  97. what you say yes to day in and day out.

  98. Maybe we also think that the Apostle Paul was using hyperbole

  99. when he wrote, the love of money is the root of all evil.

  100. The spirit of our age actually prefers Mark Twain's version of that verse

  101. where Mark Twain wrote, the lack of money is the root of all evil.

  102. Maybe we think Paul was overreaching when he wrote in 1 Timothy 6.10

  103. that an eagerness for money causes some people to wander from the faith,

  104. piercing themselves with many griefs.

  105. He must be talking about someone else.

  106. He must be clearly talking about the very rich people.

  107. How could money be that tightly connected

  108. to eternal issues like salvation?

  109. And so we come to Luke 18, James just read out to us,

  110. where Jesus has an interaction with a guy

  111. who through the centuries has become known as the rich young ruler.

  112. He's rich, he's young, and he's a powerful figure.

  113. And in this interaction, there are three things to learn

  114. about money and wealth and possessions

  115. and the life of generosity.

  116. And you'll see them on the screen.

  117. That's our journey today.

  118. First of all, the danger of wealth.

  119. We see that in the middle of the passage, Luke 18,

  120. if you've got your Bibles open at that point.

  121. There's also an outline for today on the St. Paul's app

  122. if you want to follow along and take notes

  123. as we're cruising along as well.

  124. So 24, verse 24, Jesus looks right at this rich young man

  125. and says,

  126. how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God.

  127. Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle

  128. than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.

  129. Basically, what Jesus is doing here

  130. is using a metaphor of impossibility.

  131. The camel was the biggest land animal

  132. that people knew of that time.

  133. The eye of the needle was the smallest hole

  134. that they could imagine.

  135. And so it's the impossibility of the rich

  136. entering into heaven, into God's kingdom.

  137. That's the impossibility.

  138. And when Jesus speaks about rich people here,

  139. he isn't referring to people

  140. on the Forbes annual rich list in the world,

  141. you know, the billionaires.

  142. He's referring to people like you and me.

  143. When it comes to...

  144. It's interesting in our culture,

  145. whenever it comes...

  146. This is one of the issues

  147. because money and wealth and possession

  148. is such a key issue for us,

  149. is that whenever it comes to wealth,

  150. we always naturally look up the line

  151. and look to people who are wealthy in us.

  152. And we compare ourselves to people who are wealthy in us.

  153. And when it comes to issues of morality,

  154. we always look down the line

  155. and we look at people who are less moral than us.

  156. Either way, we feel better than those people

  157. and we're not quite as good as those people.

  158. And so whenever Jesus is referring to issues of morality,

  159. well, he mustn't be referring to me.

  160. He must be referring to those people.

  161. When he talks about the rich,

  162. he's clearly not talking to me.

  163. He must be talking to those people.

  164. And so we let ourselves off the hook

  165. on every instance.

  166. So I'm a pastor

  167. and my wife is a teacher

  168. and I think I've said this before.

  169. We saw a financial advisor once

  170. and he said to us,

  171. you're not giving me much to work with here.

  172. Come back when you've got other jobs

  173. or you've got more money to play with.

  174. Anyway, so we got rid of him

  175. and got another financial advisor.

  176. Anyway, so if I get my income

  177. and I type it in

  178. so you can actually get this website,

  179. Global Rich List,

  180. where it's not just about the Forbes Rich List,

  181. it's where you can put your income

  182. pre-tax or post-tax

  183. into a website

  184. and it will calculate for you

  185. where you sit on the Global Rich List.

  186. As it turns out,

  187. more than 90% of the world's population

  188. are poorer than my wife and I

  189. based on just income.

  190. Nothing else, just income.

  191. 90% of the world's population.

  192. That means that if we own assets

  193. in a place like Chatswood

  194. or our surrounds,

  195. then you are way higher than 10%.

  196. In other words,

  197. what I'm getting at here

  198. is that Jesus may well be having

  199. this conversation with you.

  200. That's the point that I'm making.

  201. It's easier for a camel

  202. to go through the eye of a needle

  203. than it is for us to be right

  204. with our Creator God.

  205. Verse 26,

  206. the disciples hearing this go,

  207. well then,

  208. who then can be saved?

  209. You see,

  210. in their culture,

  211. they thought it was the rich ones

  212. who were particularly blessed by God.

  213. And so if the rich can't get in,

  214. well, who can?

  215. And Jesus responds,

  216. what is impossible with men

  217. is possible with God.

  218. Notice Jesus doesn't say,

  219. oh, well, look,

  220. what is impossible for the rich people?

  221. It's possible.

  222. He actually says,

  223. what is impossible for all people

  224. is possible with God.

  225. That is,

  226. the point he's making here is

  227. salvation is a miracle.

  228. It is in fact an impossibility,

  229. rich or poor,

  230. for anyone to be saved

  231. because Romans 3 says,

  232. all have sinned

  233. and fallen short of God's glory.

  234. It's not possible

  235. for any human beings

  236. to be saved

  237. except that God would intervene

  238. and do the impossible.

  239. That God would intervene

  240. and be radically generous

  241. with those who don't deserve it.

  242. Now, the reason Jesus raises that here

  243. with this rich young man

  244. is because the same thing

  245. that makes salvation

  246. for all of us

  247. impossible

  248. is made even worse

  249. with wealth.

  250. The Old Testament book of Proverbs

  251. is a book really,

  252. it's about wisdom,

  253. it's about how to navigate life

  254. in God's world well.

  255. And it says two really important,

  256. it says lots of things about money,

  257. by the way,

  258. but it says really two important things

  259. about the spiritual power of money.

  260. Not just the, you know,

  261. fiscal power of money,

  262. but the spiritual power of money.

  263. And the first thing it says

  264. is that money is distracting.

  265. Money has this spiritual power

  266. to distract us

  267. from what matters most in life.

  268. distracting us

  269. from asking

  270. the really important questions

  271. of

  272. so what am I here for?

  273. What am I really,

  274. what is my purpose in life?

  275. What am I seeking to accomplish in life?

  276. Proverbs 11.4 says,

  277. wealth is worthless

  278. in the day of wrath,

  279. but righteousness delivers from death.

  280. What that means is

  281. wealth is worthless

  282. in the day of wrath,

  283. is that money can't help you

  284. when the troubles in life hit.

  285. And yet it wants to confuse us

  286. to think that it can.

  287. Because we have this assumption,

  288. the more of it we have,

  289. the greater level of security we have.

  290. It gives us that delusion

  291. that we are safe.

  292. But we're never safe.

  293. We are never safe

  294. from grief and bereavement.

  295. We are never safe

  296. from illness.

  297. We are never safe

  298. from disaster.

  299. And ironically,

  300. you're never even safe

  301. from financial ruin.

  302. Money can't stop death.

  303. It can't stop tragedy.

  304. It can't stop heartbreak.

  305. It can't even stop poverty.

  306. And when it comes,

  307. we are totally unprepared.

  308. Totally unprepared.

  309. Money has the power

  310. to distract us

  311. from the important questions of life.

  312. The other thing it says

  313. is that,

  314. that is,

  315. Proverbs says,

  316. it can distort

  317. our self-image.

  318. So,

  319. Proverbs 30,

    Proverbs 30:8

  320. verses 8 and 9 says,

  321. Give me neither poverty

  322. nor riches,

  323. but give me only

  324. my daily bread.

  325. Otherwise,

  326. I may have too much

  327. and disown you

  328. and say,

  329. who is the Lord?

  330. What Proverbs is saying,

  331. and you may be able

  332. to see this

  333. in your own life,

  334. to see a person

  335. humbled,

  336. growing in humility,

  337. under a growth

  338. of prosperity,

  339. it would have to be

  340. one of the greatest

  341. rarities in the world.

  342. One of the greatest

  343. rarities,

  344. that is,

  345. the growth in wealth

  346. and accompanying growth

  347. downward in humility

  348. are not connected.

  349. Wealth leads to pride.

  350. It leads to pride.

  351. It puts me in a place

  352. where we say,

  353. who is God?

  354. I don't need God.

  355. Look at me

  356. and look at all

  357. that I have.

  358. I am a self-made man.

  359. And of course,

  360. the Proverbs also says,

  361. give me not poverty

  362. so that I might not

  363. shake my fist at God

  364. and say,

  365. what are you doing

  366. in my life, God?

  367. It puts us in a place

  368. of who is God?

  369. Why do I need God?

  370. That's the danger of wealth.

  371. So,

  372. why is it so dangerous?

  373. Let's go back

  374. to the beginning

  375. of this passage.

  376. We're talking about

  377. Luke 18 here

  378. and unpack it,

  379. why it is so dangerous.

  380. Verse 18,

  381. right at the beginning.

  382. A certain ruler

  383. asked him,

  384. good teacher,

  385. what must I do

  386. to inherit eternal life?

  387. Jesus says to him,

  388. why do you call me good?

  389. No one is good

  390. except God alone.

  391. You know the commandments.

  392. You shall not

  393. commit adultery.

  394. You shall not murder.

  395. You shall not steal.

  396. You shall not give

  397. false testimony.

  398. Honor your father and mother.

  399. All these

  400. I have kept

  401. since I was a boy,

  402. he said.

  403. Now,

  404. if you're a Christian

  405. sitting in the room

  406. and you'd know

  407. anything about

  408. the core message

  409. of Christianity,

  410. when you

  411. read that,

  412. you should be shocked.

  413. You should be shocked.

  414. You should be shocked

  415. that Jesus

  416. says to this guy,

  417. the answer

  418. to his question

  419. of what must I do

  420. in return,

  421. Jesus says to him,

  422. go and obey

  423. the Ten Commandments.

  424. As if somehow

  425. that is how

  426. you get right with God.

  427. Why on earth

  428. would Jesus

  429. say that to him?

  430. Because right

  431. before this interaction,

  432. Jesus tells the story,

  433. another parable,

  434. about a Pharisee

  435. and a tax collector

  436. where the obedient

  437. religious man

  438. pursuing the Ten Commandments

  439. went home

  440. not saved,

  441. not right with God

  442. and the sinner

  443. was saved.

  444. The one who lived

  445. a life of disobedience

  446. was saved.

  447. And again

  448. and again

  449. and again

  450. throughout the New Testament,

  451. we see

  452. it is impossible

  453. to save ourselves

  454. by being good,

  455. by being religious,

  456. by being moral.

  457. So why does

  458. Jesus

  459. not say

  460. to this guy

  461. in this moment

  462. when he rocks

  463. up to him,

  464. what must I do

  465. to inherit

  466. eternal life?

  467. Why does Jesus

  468. not grab

  469. his blackboard

  470. and his whiteboard

  471. marker

  472. and draw him

  473. six boxes

  474. and run through

  475. two ways to live

  476. or run through

  477. for him

  478. the four

  479. spiritual principles

  480. of life?

  481. Why does

  482. he not

  483. say to him,

  484. I'm on the way

  485. to Jerusalem,

  486. I'm going to die

  487. on the cross

  488. to pay a ransom,

  489. to take the penalty

  490. that you deserve

  491. for your sin

  492. and if you put

  493. your trust in me

  494. then you will

  495. have eternal life.

  496. Why does

  497. Jesus not

  498. do that?

  499. Because

  500. that's what's

  501. been said

  502. for

  503. 20 centuries

  504. since Jesus.

  505. Well,

  506. because in this

  507. moment

  508. to say to this

  509. rich young man

  510. I've come to die

  511. for your sins

  512. would be

  513. entirely

  514. incomprehensible

  515. to him.

  516. You see,

  517. the rich young

  518. ruler at this

  519. point

  520. is in fact

  521. like

  522. most people

  523. in our

  524. society.

  525. The vast

  526. majority

  527. of people

  528. in our

  529. neighbourhood

  530. are

  531. basically

  532. good.

  533. And to

  534. walk in

  535. and say

  536. you need

  537. a saviour

  538. is

  539. entirely

  540. incomprehensible

  541. to people

  542. in our

  543. day and age

  544. as it was

  545. for this

  546. rich young

  547. ruler.

  548. See his

  549. words,

  550. verse 21?

  551. All these

  552. I have

  553. kept

  554. since I

  555. was a

  556. boy.

  557. In other

  558. words,

  559. I don't

  560. need a

  561. rescuer.

  562. I'm a

  563. good person.

  564. I might

  565. not be

  566. perfect,

  567. but I

  568. don't

  569. need a

  570. rescuer.

  571. You know,

  572. when I

  573. look at

  574. the people

  575. down below

  576. me in

  577. the chain

  578. of

  579. morality,

  580. I am

  581. so much

  582. better than

  583. the vast

  584. majority

  585. of people.

  586. all I

  587. need

  588. here from

  589. you,

  590. Jesus,

  591. is just

  592. a little

  593. bit of

  594. a push,

  595. just a

  596. little bit

  597. of assistance,

  598. just a

  599. little bit

  600. of guidance

  601. to ensure

  602. that I

  603. get over

  604. the line

  605. in the

  606. end.

  607. And yet,

  608. he still

  609. comes running

  610. up to

  611. Jesus.

  612. Despite

  613. the life

  614. that he

  615. has lived,

  616. deep down,

  617. he wasn't

  618. entirely

  619. confident.

  620. He knew

  621. he wasn't

  622. entirely

  623. right.

  624. Something's

  625. wrong,

  626. something's

  627. missing.

  628. Why would

  629. he ask

  630. the question

  631. about securing

  632. eternal life

  633. if he thought

  634. that he had

  635. had it secured

  636. through his

  637. morality?

  638. If we

  639. think we

  640. can get

  641. right with

  642. God by

  643. being good,

  644. we'll

  645. always feel

  646. insecure.

  647. Have I

  648. done enough?

  649. Am I

  650. doing enough?

  651. Even those

  652. who project

  653. an image

  654. that they've

  655. got it

  656. all together

  657. on the

  658. outside,

  659. on the

  660. inside,

  661. they know

  662. better because

  663. in the

  664. deep

  665. recesses of

  666. the heart

  667. that no

  668. one else

  669. sees day

  670. by day,

  671. there is

  672. that dark

  673. corner that

  674. we hope no

  675. one will

  676. ever see.

  677. We know

  678. the things

  679. that we've

  680. done and

  681. the things

  682. that we've

  683. thought that

  684. we could

  685. hide,

  686. but we

  687. cannot hide

  688. them from

  689. our own

  690. conscience.

  691. Jesus is

  692. reminding

  693. this young

  694. man that

  695. his first

  696. and fundamental

  697. problem is

  698. that he is

  699. in fact not

  700. good.

  701. That's where

  702. he had to

  703. go.

  704. No mere

  705. mortal is.

  706. What's the

  707. point of

  708. verse 19?

  709. Jesus then

  710. goes on to

  711. show him

  712. exactly where

  713. he is not

  714. good.

  715. In verse

  716. 22,

  717. when Jesus

  718. heard this,

  719. he said to

  720. him,

  721. you still

  722. like one

  723. thing,

  724. sell

  725. everything you

  726. have and

  727. give to the

  728. poor and

  729. you'll have

  730. treasure in

  731. heaven and

  732. then come

  733. follow me.

  734. What's

  735. Jesus doing

  736. here?

  737. Again,

  738. what is he

  739. doing?

  740. I mean,

  741. he has never

  742. suggested to

  743. anyone that

  744. the way to

  745. be saved is

  746. to give all

  747. of your

  748. money away

  749. to the

  750. poor and

  751. become poor

  752. yourself.

  753. He's never

  754. suggested that.

  755. So why

  756. now?

  757. Why now?

  758. Because it

  759. is a

  760. brilliant

  761. strategy to

  762. help this

  763. man see

  764. his heart

  765. and where

  766. he needs

  767. a saviour.

  768. You see,

  769. what Jesus

  770. does here

  771. is he

  772. targets his

  773. deepest

  774. sense of

  775. security,

  776. his deepest

  777. identity

  778. marker,

  779. his idol.

  780. This is the

  781. thing that

  782. he's looking

  783. to,

  784. to give

  785. him what

  786. only God

  787. can give

  788. him.

  789. You see,

  790. for this

  791. rich young

  792. ruler,

  793. money is

  794. not just

  795. some tool

  796. for him,

  797. it is,

  798. in fact,

  799. an identity

  800. scorecard.

  801. It is his

  802. security,

  803. it is his

  804. hope.

  805. This is the

  806. thing that

  807. is, in

  808. fact,

  809. squeezing

  810. God out

  811. of his

  812. life.

  813. And when

  814. Jesus presses

  815. in on him,

  816. he sees

  817. for the

  818. first time

  819. in his

  820. life

  821. that he

  822. hasn't,

  823. in fact,

  824. obeyed the

  825. Tenka

  826. Moans

  827. at all,

  828. that he's

  829. not,

  830. in fact,

  831. good at

  832. all.

  833. Jesus

  834. pushes him

  835. to give it

  836. all up for

  837. the poor,

  838. give it

  839. all up,

  840. in other

  841. words,

  842. give it

  843. all up

  844. for God

  845. and follow

  846. me,

  847. follow

  848. Jesus.

  849. And he

  850. couldn't do

  851. it.

  852. He

  853. couldn't do

  854. it.

  855. Verse 23,

  856. it says,

  857. he became

  858. very sad.

  859. The words

  860. say,

  861. he is

  862. deeply

  863. grieved.

  864. He is

  865. deeply

  866. distressed.

  867. What is

  868. he deeply

  869. distressed

  870. about?

  871. He's

  872. deeply

  873. distressed

  874. because for

  875. the first

  876. time in

  877. his life,

  878. he has

  879. understood

  880. good that

  881. he is

  882. in fact

  883. not

  884. good.

  885. You see,

  886. his money

  887. is just

  888. a means

  889. to an

  890. end for

  891. him as

  892. it is

  893. for any

  894. of us

  895. and his

  896. money is

  897. not just

  898. money for

  899. him,

  900. it is

  901. his worth,

  902. it is

  903. his hope,

  904. it is

  905. his security,

  906. it is

  907. in fact

  908. his

  909. greatest

  910. treasure

  911. and he

  912. does not

  913. want God

  914. to get

  915. in the

  916. way

  917. of that

  918. and he

  919. understands

  920. for the

  921. first time

  922. in his

  923. life that

  924. he has

  925. not obeyed

  926. the Ten

  927. Commandments

  928. at all

  929. because he

  930. has not

  931. even got

  932. past the

  933. very first

  934. one.

  935. You

  936. shall have

  937. no other

  938. gods but

  939. me.

  940. It

  941. wasn't

  942. until

  943. Jesus

  944. took him

  945. to

  946. you

  947. shall

  948. not

  949. covet

  950. and

  951. because

  952. coveting

  953. of all

  954. the Ten

  955. Commandments

  956. coveting

  957. is the

  958. one that's

  959. an attitude

  960. of the

  961. heart

  962. not an

  963. action.

  964. It's an

  965. attitude

  966. of the

  967. heart

  968. and the

  969. attitude

  970. of the

  971. heart

  972. has now

  973. been

  974. exposed

  975. in such

  976. a way

  977. that he's

  978. understood

  979. that God

  980. is not

  981. his

  982. greatest

  983. treasure.

  984. Of all

  985. the things

  986. that Jesus

  987. could have

  988. picked on

  989. let me

  990. just land

  991. this for

  992. us for

  993. a little

  994. bit

  995. of all

  996. the

  997. things

  998. that

  999. Jesus

  1000. could

  1001. have

  1002. picked

  1003. on

  1004. he

  1005. sets

  1006. up

  1007. money

  1008. as

  1009. the

  1010. alternative

  1011. God

  1012. when he

  1013. said you

  1014. cannot

  1015. serve

  1016. both

  1017. God

  1018. and

  1019. money.

  1020. We

  1021. are

  1022. devoted

  1023. to

  1024. one

  1025. or

  1026. the

  1027. other

  1028. but

  1029. you

  1030. cannot

  1031. have

  1032. both.

  1033. You'll

  1034. be

  1035. mastered

  1036. by

  1037. one

  1038. or

  1039. the

  1040. other.

  1041. You

  1042. will

  1043. never

  1044. be

  1045. mastered

  1046. by

  1047. both.

  1048. So how

  1049. do we

  1050. escape

  1051. the danger

  1052. of money?

  1053. Jesus

  1054. the rest

  1055. of the

  1056. Bible

  1057. tells me

  1058. that

  1059. wealth

  1060. money

  1061. materialism

  1062. is

  1063. incredibly

  1064. dangerous.

  1065. It's

  1066. one of

  1067. the

  1068. major

  1069. distractions

  1070. for those

  1071. who

  1072. follow

  1073. Jesus

  1074. and I

  1075. would

  1076. add

  1077. it's

  1078. one of

  1079. the

  1080. I

  1081. would

  1082. say

  1083. it's

  1084. got

  1085. to

  1086. be

  1087. close

  1088. to

  1089. one

  1090. of

  1091. the

  1092. most

  1093. primary

  1094. distractions

  1095. in

  1096. the

  1097. 21st

  1098. century

  1099. in

  1100. Western

  1101. civilization

  1102. distractions

  1103. in

  1104. terms

  1105. of

  1106. following

  1107. Jesus.

  1108. Now

  1109. I've

  1110. got

  1111. three

  1112. things

  1113. we

  1114. can

  1115. do

  1116. to

  1117. guard

  1118. against

  1119. the

  1120. hazard

  1121. of

  1122. wealth

  1123. while

  1124. also

  1125. maximizing

  1126. the

  1127. helpfulness

  1128. of

  1129. wealth

  1130. and

  1131. money.

  1132. The

  1133. first

  1134. thing

  1135. is

  1136. to

  1137. assume

  1138. that

  1139. we're

  1140. in

  1141. denial.

  1142. That's

  1143. the

  1144. helpful

  1145. thing.

  1146. You

  1147. start

  1148. there.

  1149. Assume

  1150. that

  1151. you're

  1152. in

  1153. denial.

  1154. You

  1155. and

  1156. me

  1157. we're

  1158. all

  1159. in

  1160. denial

  1161. here

  1162. because

  1163. Jesus

  1164. is

  1165. entirely

  1166. blunt

  1167. because

  1168. that's

  1169. what this

  1170. rich

  1171. young

  1172. ruler

  1173. was.

  1174. He

  1175. was

  1176. entirely

  1177. in

  1178. denial

  1179. and

  1180. that

  1181. is

  1182. in

  1183. fact

  1184. the

  1185. very

  1186. nature

  1187. of

  1188. addiction.

  1189. And

  1190. addiction

  1191. will

  1192. constantly

  1193. say

  1194. I'm

  1195. not an

  1196. addiction.

  1197. I'm

  1198. not

  1199. addicted to

  1200. this

  1201. thing.

  1202. I don't

  1203. have a

  1204. problem

  1205. with

  1206. this

  1207. thing.

  1208. So

  1209. assume

  1210. that

  1211. we're

  1212. in

  1213. denial

  1214. because

  1215. the

  1216. dominant

  1217. philosophy

  1218. of

  1219. our

  1220. time

  1221. is

  1222. what

  1223. is

  1224. known

  1225. technically

  1226. as

  1227. philosophical

  1228. naturalism.

  1229. That's

  1230. the

  1231. world

  1232. view.

  1233. That's

  1234. the

  1235. dominant

  1236. world

  1237. view

  1238. of

  1239. our

  1240. day

  1241. and

  1242. age.

  1243. Philosophical

  1244. naturalism.

  1245. It's

  1246. what a

  1247. secular

  1248. age

  1249. is

  1250. built

  1251. on.

  1252. And

  1253. what it

  1254. does,

  1255. philosophical

  1256. naturalism

  1257. asserts

  1258. that there

  1259. is

  1260. nothing

  1261. beyond

  1262. the

  1263. natural

  1264. world.

  1265. Nothing

  1266. beyond

  1267. the

  1268. natural

  1269. world.

  1270. And

  1271. the

  1272. common

  1273. term

  1274. that we

  1275. use

  1276. for it

  1277. is

  1278. materialism.

  1279. And

  1280. the

  1281. goal

  1282. of

  1283. materialism,

  1284. of

  1285. philosophical

  1286. naturalism

  1287. is if

  1288. there's

  1289. nothing

  1290. beyond

  1291. this

  1292. world,

  1293. then

  1294. the

  1295. goal

  1296. of

  1297. life

  1298. is

  1299. to

  1300. consume

  1301. as

  1302. much

  1303. of

  1304. this

  1305. material

  1306. world

  1307. as

  1308. possible.

  1309. As

  1310. possible.

  1311. To

  1312. make

  1313. life

  1314. as

  1315. joyful

  1316. and

  1317. as

  1318. happy

  1319. for

  1320. you

  1321. as

  1322. possible.

  1323. And

  1324. so,

  1325. if

  1326. you're

  1327. one of

  1328. the

  1329. older

  1330. generations,

  1331. baby

  1332. boomers

  1333. and

  1334. above,

  1335. the

  1336. whole

  1337. goal

  1338. for

  1339. you

  1340. has

  1341. been,

  1342. you've

  1343. inherited

  1344. it from

  1345. your

  1346. parents

  1347. and

  1348. your

  1349. grandparents

  1350. who

  1351. came

  1352. through

  1353. World

  1354. War I

  1355. and

  1356. World

  1357. War II,

  1358. is

  1359. to

  1360. have

  1361. financial

  1362. security

  1363. in

  1364. life.

  1365. Until

  1366. you get

  1367. almost to

  1368. the

  1369. end

  1370. of

  1371. your

  1372. life,

  1373. and

  1374. then

  1375. you blow

  1376. it all

  1377. on

  1378. tours

  1379. and

  1380. trips

  1381. and

  1382. comforts

  1383. and

  1384. leather

  1385. lounges

  1386. that

  1387. get to

  1388. your body

  1389. temperature

  1390. and

  1391. bigotiva,

  1392. it's all

  1393. comfort and

  1394. security.

1395. If you're one of the

  1396. younger generations,

  1397. you go,

  1398. screw that,

  1399. I want it now,

  1400. and with the

  1401. benefit of credit

  1402. and everything

  1403. else,

  1404. I'm going to

  1405. live the

  1406. high life

  1407. now,

  1408. but mainly

  1409. so you

  1410. splurge on

  1411. your resources

  1412. and accumulate

  1413. experiences

  1414. in life.

  1415. So one

  1416. generation is

  1417. financial

  1418. security,

  1419. another

  1420. generation

  1421. is

  1422. experiences,

  1423. and it's

  1424. all coming

  1425. from

  1426. philosophical

  1427. naturalism.

  1428. Now,

  1429. the goal

  1430. here,

  1431. if you like,

  1432. assume that

  1433. you're in

  1434. denial,

  1435. on this.

  1436. You see,

  1437. in this

  1438. country alone,

  1439. $20

  1440. billion

  1441. is spent

  1442. every year

  1443. keeping us

  1444. marinating

  1445. in the

  1446. materialism

  1447. worldview.

  1448. $20

  1449. billion just

  1450. in this

  1451. world,

  1452. in this

  1453. country,

  1454. which,

  1455. by the way,

  1456. is vastly

  1457. more than

  1458. what this

  1459. country gives

  1460. annually to

  1461. charities and

  1462. non-profits.

  1463. So the

  1464. first thing

  1465. to assume

  1466. is that

  1467. you are

  1468. under the

  1469. influence of

  1470. that very

  1471. well-spent

  1472. $20

  1473. billion to

  1474. get your

  1475. life aligned

  1476. with

  1477. philosophical

  1478. naturalism as

  1479. a philosophy.

  1480. Assume that

  1481. some of the

  1482. message is

  1483. having some

  1484. level of

  1485. impact on

  1486. you.

  1487. Assume that

  1488. the amount

  1489. of money you

  1490. think you

  1491. need is

  1492. more than

  1493. what you

  1494. really need.

  1495. And assume

  1496. also that

  1497. the amount

  1498. of money

  1499. you think

  1500. you can

  1501. give away

  1502. is in

  1503. fact less

  1504. than what

  1505. you really

  1506. can give

  1507. away.

  1508. The Bible

  1509. tells us

  1510. that money

  1511. makes us

  1512. blind.

  1513. So assume

  1514. you're in

  1515. denial.

  1516. Secondly,

  1517. look to the

  1518. rich young

  1519. ruler.

  1520. To counter

  1521. the constant

  1522. messaging of

  1523. our society,

  1524. look to the

  1525. rich young

  1526. ruler as

  1527. an example

  1528. for us.

  1529. And when I

  1530. say that,

  1531. you need to

  1532. hear me

  1533. this,

  1534. I'm not

  1535. referring to

  1536. the guy

  1537. that's in

  1538. front of

  1539. Jesus,

  1540. talking to

  1541. Jesus.

  1542. I'm referring

  1543. to the

  1544. other rich

  1545. young ruler

  1546. in this

  1547. passage.

  1548. Jesus is

  1549. around 30,

  1550. 32 when

  1551. he was

  1552. heading to

  1553. Jerusalem

  1554. to die

  1555. on a

  1556. cross.

  1557. The Bible

  1558. says that

  1559. he existed

  1560. with God

  1561. for all

  1562. of eternity.

  1563. He's the

  1564. one who

  1565. made

  1566. everything.

  1567. He's the

  1568. one who

  1569. owns

  1570. everything.

  1571. He is

  1572. the one

  1573. who rules

  1574. and sustains

  1575. everything.

  1576. And he

  1577. left all

  1578. of that

  1579. aside

  1580. and came

  1581. from heaven

  1582. to identify

  1583. with the

  1584. spiritual

  1585. poverty

  1586. of humanity.

  1587. And he's

  1588. on the way

  1589. to Jerusalem

  1590. to die

  1591. on a

  1592. cross

  1593. and into

  1594. a

  1595. physical

  1596. and a

  1597. spiritual

  1598. and an

  1599. emotional

  1600. poverty

  1601. deeper

  1602. than any

  1603. other human

  1604. being has

  1605. ever gone

  1606. on the face

  1607. of the

  1608. earth.

  1609. He will

  1610. be stripped

  1611. of everything.

  1612. The one

  1613. who is rich

  1614. beyond all

  1615. measure

  1616. will be

  1617. stripped of

  1618. everything.

  1619. and he

  1620. does it

  1621. for us.

  1622. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 8:9

  1623. 8 verse

  1624. 9 puts

  1625. it in

  1626. economic

  1627. terms

  1628. for us

  1629. the

  1630. gospel

  1631. of Jesus

  1632. Christ.

  1633. For you

  1634. know the

  1635. grace of

  1636. our Lord

  1637. Jesus

  1638. Christ

  1639. that though

  1640. he was

  1641. rich

  1642. yet for

  1643. your

  1644. sakes

  1645. he became

  1646. poor

  1647. so that

  1648. you

  1649. through

  1650. his

  1651. poverty

  1652. might

  1653. become

  1654. rich.

  1655. he was

  1656. drained

  1657. of all

  1658. riches

  1659. so that

  1660. we

  1661. though

  1662. spiritually

  1663. bankrupt

  1664. beyond

  1665. measure

  1666. can

  1667. receive

  1668. his

  1669. riches.

  1670. You see

  1671. in Jesus

  1672. we get

  1673. adoption

  1674. into God's

  1675. family

  1676. we get

  1677. forgiveness

  1678. we get

  1679. pardon

  1680. we get

  1681. eternal

  1682. life.

  1683. It is

  1684. the only

  1685. wealth

  1686. that makes

  1687. you truly

  1688. secure

  1689. not just

  1690. in this

  1691. life

  1692. but beyond

  1693. life

  1694. we get

  1695. the

  1696. affirmation

  1697. of the

  1698. eternal

  1699. God

  1700. the

  1701. praiseworthy

  1702. says

  1703. you are

  1704. my

  1705. much

  1706. loved

  1707. child

  1708. in

  1709. Jesus.

  1710. It's

  1711. the only

  1712. security

  1713. that this

  1714. world

  1715. cannot

  1716. take

  1717. away.

  1718. The only

  1719. identity

  1720. and so

  1721. the second

  1722. thing

  1723. is

  1724. we need

  1725. to look

  1726. to the

  1727. rich

  1728. young

  1729. ruler

  1730. until

  1731. we get

  1732. weepingly

  1733. excited

  1734. over

  1735. what he

  1736. has

  1737. achieved

  1738. for us

  1739. what he

  1740. has

  1741. gifted

  1742. to

  1743. us

  1744. look

  1745. to the

  1746. glorious

  1747. news

  1748. of God's

  1749. grace

  1750. and his

  1751. riches

  1752. to us

  1753. in the

  1754. Lord

  1755. Jesus

  1756. until

  1757. it

  1758. drains

  1759. us

  1760. of

  1761. all

  1762. power

  1763. of

  1764. all

  1765. the

  1766. power

  1767. of

  1768. money

  1769. and

  1770. possessions

  1771. let me

  1772. just

  1773. swing

  1774. this

  1775. back

  1776. to

  1777. what

  1778. I

  1779. wanted

  1780. the

  1781. earlier

  1782. message

  1783. if

  1784. you

  1785. are

  1786. not

  1787. in

  1788. God's

  1789. word

  1790. and

  1791. meditating

  1792. on

  1793. his

  1794. word

  1795. and

  1796. experiencing

  1797. day

  1798. in

  1799. and

  1800. day

  1801. out

  1802. the

  1803. wealth

  1804. of

  1805. what

  1806. you

  1807. have

  1808. in

  1809. Christ

  1810. and

  1811. pushing

  1812. that

  1813. down

  1814. in

  1815. your

  1816. heart

  1817. if

  1818. you

  1819. are

  1820. not

  1821. doing

  1822. that

  1823. daily

  1824. then

  1825. you

  1826. must

  1827. assume

  1828. that

  1829. you

  1830. are

  1831. in

  1832. denial

  1833. because

  1834. you

  1835. are

  1836. marinating

  1837. in

  1838. 20

  1839. billion

  1840. dollars

  1841. worth

  1842. of

  1843. advertising

  1844. and

  1845. it

  1846. is

  1847. winning

  1848. the

  1849. war

  1850. against

  1851. your

  1852. soul

  1853. if

  1854. you

  1855. are

  1856. not

  1857. daily

  1858. in

  1859. his

  1860. word

  1861. then

  1862. the

  1863. messaging

  1864. of

  1865. our

  1866. society

  1867. and

  1868. where

  1869. you

  1870. get

  1871. your

  1872. security

  1873. identity

  1874. is

  1875. most

  1876. definitely

  1877. winning

  1878. and

  1879. so

  1880. look

  1881. to

  1882. the

  1883. glorious

  1884. news

  1885. of

  1886. God's

  1887. grace

  1888. and

  1889. these

  1890. riches

  1891. to

  1892. us

  1893. in

  1894. the

  1895. Lord

  1896. Jesus

  1897. until

  1898. it

  1899. drains

  1900. all

  1901. power

  1902. out

  1903. of

  1904. money

  1905. and

  1906. possessions

  1907. it

  1908. just

  1909. becomes

  1910. money

  1911. and

  1912. things

  1913. it's

  1914. no

  1915. longer

  1916. my

  1917. security

  1918. or my

  1919. identity

  1920. and so

  1921. the

  1922. third

  1923. thing

  1924. is

  1925. to

  1926. have

  1927. a

  1928. plan

  1929. to

  1930. use

  1931. your

  1932. wealth

  1933. with

  1934. purpose

  1935. to

  1936. use

  1937. it

  1938. with

  1939. eternity

  1940. and

  1941. as

  1942. stewards

  1943. of

  1944. God's

  1945. resources

  1946. resources

  1947. while you

  1948. have

  1949. them

  1950. so

  1951. here's

  1952. a couple

  1953. of steps

  1954. for you

  1955. step

  1956. number

  1957. one

  1958. take

  1959. the

  1960. time

  1961. to

  1962. investigate

  1963. how much

  1964. am I

  1965. actually

  1966. giving

  1967. away

  1968. at the

  1969. moment

  1970. based

  1971. on my

  1972. wealth

  1973. how much

  1974. am I

  1975. giving

  1976. away

  1977. and how

  1978. much

  1979. of that

  1980. is going

  1981. to

  1982. Christian

  1983. ministry

  1984. and

  1985. charity

  1986. Christian

  1987. ministry

  1988. to help

  1989. people out

  1990. of spiritual

  1991. poverty

  1992. charity

  1993. to help

  1994. people out

  1995. of physical

  1996. poverty

  1997. step

  1998. number

  1999. two

  2000. if it

  2001. is not

  2002. at least

  2003. 10%

  2004. and this

  2005. is not

  2006. a sermon

  2007. on tithing

  2008. which is

  2009. the biblical

  2010. mark here

  2011. if it's

  2012. not at least

  2013. 10%

  2014. the very

  2015. least amount

  2016. the disciples

  2017. are the

  2018. giveaway

  2019. work out

  2020. how you

  2021. can start

  2022. moving

  2023. aggressively

  2024. towards

  2025. 10%

  2026. step

  2027. number

  2028. three

  2029. work out

  2030. what sacrifices

  2031. you are going

  2032. to make

  2033. in order

  2034. to get

  2035. there

  2036. as I

  2037. said

  2038. I think

  2039. it was

  2040. last

  2041. week

  2042. if

  2043. we

  2044. don't

  2045. need

  2046. to make

  2047. sacrifices

  2048. to give

  2049. 10%

  2050. then we

  2051. aren't

  2052. actually

  2053. giving

  2054. enough

  2055. radical

  2056. generosity

  2057. is about

  2058. sacrifice

  2059. sacrificial

  2060. giving

  2061. is not

  2062. a percentage

  2063. it's

  2064. when our

  2065. living

  2066. standards

  2067. change

  2068. in such

  2069. a way

  2070. that we

  2071. feel

  2072. loss

  2073. for the

  2074. benefit

  2075. of

  2076. others

  2077. if

  2078. our

  2079. giving

  2080. does not

  2081. burden

  2082. us

  2083. if

  2084. it

  2085. does

  2086. not

  2087. cut

  2088. into

  2089. our

  2090. lifestyle

  2091. in

  2092. any

  2093. way

  2094. then

  2095. you

  2096. need

  2097. to

  2098. give

  2099. more

  2100. American

  2101. pastor

  2102. John

  2103. Piper

  2104. argues

  2105. this

  2106. point

  2107. very

  2108. strongly

  2109. I

  2110. didn't

  2111. put it

  2112. on the

  2113. screen

  2114. I

  2115. just

  2116. want

  2117. to

  2118. read

  2119. it

  2120. to

  2121. you

  2122. just

  2123. let

  2124. us

  2125. sit

  2126. it

  2127. is

  2128. a

  2129. biblical

  2130. truth

  2131. beyond

  2132. all

  2133. dispute

  2134. !

  2135. there's

  2136. a

  2137. biblical

  2138. worldview

  2139. here

  2140. you've

  2141. received

  2142. everything

  2143. you have

  2144. including

  2145. the ability

  2146. to make

  2147. the money

  2148. that you

  2149. have

  2150. and

  2151. has been

  2152. loaned

  2153. to you

  2154. as a

  2155. steward

  2156. to use

  2157. in ways

  2158. that

  2159. maximize

  2160. the

  2161. glorification

  2162. of God's

  2163. mercy

  2164. in the

  2165. world

  2166. 25

  2167. verses

  2168. 14

  2169. to 30

  2170. and it

  2171. is

  2172. irrational

  2173. to think

  2174. that giving

  2175. 10%

  2176. of that

  2177. money

  2178. to

  2179. church

  2180. settles

  2181. the issue

  2182. of good

  2183. stewardship

  2184. in a

  2185. world

  2186. of such

  2187. immense

  2188. need

  2189. and in

  2190. a

  2191. country

  2192. of such

  2193. immense

  2194. luxury

  2195. and under

  2196. the commission

  2197. of such

  2198. a powerful

  2199. Lord

  2200. the issue

  2201. of stewardship

  2202. is not

  2203. should I

  2204. tithe

  2205. in other

  2206. words

  2207. should I

  2208. give just

  2209. 10%

  2210. but rather

  2211. how much

  2212. of God's

  2213. trust fund

  2214. dare I

  2215. use

  2216. to surround

  2217. myself

  2218. with

  2219. comforts

  2220. step

  2221. four

  2222. decide

  2223. what you

  2224. are giving

  2225. to and

  2226. follow through

  2227. with it

  2228. make yourself

  2229. accountable

  2230. that is the

  2231. reason we

  2232. say that

  2233. is that

  2234. giving

  2235. is a

  2236. spiritual

  2237. issue

  2238. and like

  2239. all

  2240. spiritual

  2241. issues

  2242. we are

  2243. accountable

  2244. for it

  2245. step

  2246. five

  2247. set

  2248. aside

  2249. electronically

  2250. your

  2251. regular

  2252. gift

  2253. to the

  2254. church

  2255. and then

  2256. on top

  2257. of that

  2258. you add

  2259. spontaneous

  2260. gifts

  2261. like the

  2262. projects

  2263. that we're

  2264. doing at

  2265. the moment

  2266. and other

  2267. needs

  2268. as they

  2269. arise

  2270. I take

  2271. my cue

  2272. here

  2273. from the

  2274. apostle Paul's

  2275. teaching

  2276. that giving

  2277. should be

  2278. two things

  2279. it should

  2280. be regular

  2281. and it

  2282. should be

  2283. spontaneous

  2284. it should

  2285. be disciplined

  2286. and it

  2287. should be

  2288. free

  2289. 1 Corinthians

  2290. 16

  2291. 2

  2292. what it

  2293. does

  2294. here

  2295. it

  2296. points

  2297. to

  2298. the

  2299. wisdom

  2300. of

  2301. planned

  2302. regular

  2303. disciplined

  2304. giving

  2305. and that's

  2306. what these

  2307. whole

  2308. rhythms of

  2309. grace is

  2310. about

  2311. it's

  2312. about

  2313. in and

  2314. out

  2315. in and

  2316. out

  2317. in and

  2318. out

  2319. it's

  2320. a

  2321. rhythm

  2322. and

  2323. habit

  2324. of

  2325. life

  2326. as our

  2327. income

  2328. comes in

  2329. rhythmically

  2330. so we

  2331. send it

  2332. out

  2333. rhythmically

  2334. if it

  2335. comes in

  2336. rhythmically

  2337. and I'm

  2338. not sending

  2339. it out

  2340. rhythmically

  2341. there's an

  2342. indication

  2343. there that

  2344. I'm probably

  2345. more captivated

  2346. by

  2347. the

  2348. values

  2349. of the

  2350. world

  2351. around

  2352. us

  2353. sporadic

  2354. giving

  2355. with no

  2356. plan

  2357. will most

  2358. likely mean

  2359. that we're

  2360. not treating

  2361. finance as

  2362. an integral

  2363. part of

  2364. our

  2365. discipleship

  2366. to give

  2367. radically

  2368. generous

  2369. lives

  2370. with our

  2371. money

  2372. sorry to

  2373. live

  2374. radically

  2375. generous

  2376. lives

  2377. with our

  2378. wealth

  2379. and

  2380. possession

  2381. actually

  2382. needs

  2383. joy

  2384. we need

  2385. more than

  2386. just

  2387. courage

  2388. we need

  2389. joy

  2390. we need

  2391. to be

  2392. relaxed

  2393. and at

  2394. peace

  2395. and secure

  2396. enough

  2397. to do

  2398. it

  2399. and this

  2400. joy

  2401. in

  2402. radical

  2403. generosity

  2404. only

  2405. comes

  2406. when we

  2407. look to

  2408. the rich

  2409. young

  2410. ruler

  2411. it's

  2412. the only

  2413. source

  2414. of it

  2415. it

  2416. only

  2417. comes

  2418. when we

  2419. look to

  2420. the rich

  2421. young

  2422. ruler

  2423. who

  2424. lost

  2425. absolutely

  2426. everything

  2427. so that

  2428. we could

  2429. gain

  2430. absolutely

  2431. everything

  2432. and the

  2433. more

  2434. we look

  2435. to Jesus

  2436. and the

  2437. riches

  2438. we have

  2439. in him

  2440. the freer

  2441. we will

  2442. be to

  2443. live

  2444. pervasive

  2445. and generous

  2446. lives

  2447. rhythmic

  2448. financial

  2449. giving

  2450. is a

  2451. spiritual

  2452. discipline

  2453. that takes

  2454. the knowledge

  2455. of

  2456. Jesus'

  2457. generosity

  2458. to me

  2459. my

  2460. created

  2461. God's

  2462. generosity

  2463. to me

  2464. in the

  2465. gospel

  2466. it takes

  2467. that knowledge

  2468. in the

  2469. head

  2470. and

  2471. it

  2472. pushes

  2473. it

  2474. down

  2475. into

  2476. my

  2477. heart

  2478. it

  2479. takes

  2480. the

  2481. knowledge

  2482. that

  2483. Jesus

  2484. is

  2485. in fact

  2486. my

  2487. greatest

  2488. treasure

  2489. and it

  2490. pushes

  2491. it

  2492. down

  2493. into

  2494. my

  2495. heart

  2496. and the

  2497. way it

  2498. pushes

  2499. it down

  2500. into

  2501. my

  2502. heart

  2503. is by

  2504. being

  2505. regular

  2506. and sporadic

  2507. with

  2508. the

  2509. other

  2510. greatest

  2511. treasure

  2512. in my

  2513. life

  2514. by

  2515. giving

  2516. it

  2517. away

  2518. in

  2519. eye

  2520. popping

  2521. proportions
