  1. Thank you, Michelle, and welcome everyone to church this morning.

  2. ! It's great to see you.

  3. I am Steve.

  4. I've never met you before.

  5. I'm senior pastor here at St. Paul's.

  6. As Nick said, we're closing off our vision series for this morning.

  7. So if you keep your Bibles open there, 1 Corinthians 9, that'd be fantastic.

  8. The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche was a classical scholar

  9. and a self-confessed critic, particularly of the Christian faith,

  10. religion generally, but particularly the Christian faith.

  11. He once said that he would believe in the Redeemer, that is Jesus,

  12. if the redeemed Christians looked a little more redeemed.

  13. He was making the point that from the Christians that he knew,

  14. that he never really got the impression that there was, in fact,

  15. a God who created all things.

  16. You never get the impression that humanity was made in a special relationship

  17. and in the image of God, in a special relationship with him.

  18. You never get the opinion at all that this humanity

  19. inexplicably set their hearts on something else than their creator God.

  20. They destroyed themselves in the world,

  21. and yet this God rescued them by coming into his story,

  22. and that this God rescued them by coming into his story,

  23. dying on a cross, and rose triumphantly,

  24. and now reigns and rules over all things decisively,

  25. giving them the gift of eternal life in his presence forever,

  26. where he will restore everything and all evil and sin.

  27. He said, you would never get the opinion that Christians believe that.

  28. That was his point.

  29. In fact, Nietzsche said, another one of his great quotes is,

  30. there's really only one true Christian, and he died on a cross.

  31. Nietzsche's point was that if that is, in fact, what Christians believed,

  32. then why does it seem to make such little difference

  33. in the way that they live their lives?

  34. Why aren't they exceedingly joyous?

  35. Why aren't they living lives shaped by that truth?

  36. And that really is what our series has been about this year,

  37. this term, our vision series.

  38. When I began, I mentioned that the word Christian

  39. Christian is a connection of its two words,

  40. which means two words of Christian,

  41. which means, in essence, it means followers of the Christ.

  42. And the word Christian means a lifelong journey,

  43. following Jesus, 100% dedication to him,

  44. as he himself describes it,

  45. of taking up your cross, dying to self,

  46. being alive to him, being changed,

  47. transformed into the character of Jesus

  48. and with the priorities of Jesus.

  49. To be a Christian is to be like Jesus,

  50. like Jesus in his complete surrender to the Father,

  51. like Jesus in his life of service of others,

  52. like Jesus in his love for all people,

  53. like Jesus in his patient endurance,

  54. like Jesus in his mission to the world

  55. to win people back into relationship with God.

  56. And as I've said along this series,

  57. there's often a disconnect in the Christian life

  58. between those great truths,

  59. our worldview, as I said last week,

  60. and the lives that that worldview should produce.

  61. And so this series has been looking at

  62. regular rhythms of grace,

  63. Christian practices, spiritual disciplines,

  64. as they've been traditionally called,

  65. which take those great truths of the Christian faith

  66. and to take them from the mind

  67. and push them down into the driving centre of our lives.

  68. And then from there, out from there,

  69. into transformation of character and priorities.

  70. That's what spiritual disciplines do.

  71. They move.

  72. And as the great John Calvin said,

  73. a truth that's held just in the mind

  74. is actually not a truth that's lived by

  75. or actually believed in

  76. until it's pushed down into the driving centre of our lives

  77. and out from there.

  78. And so these rhythms, if you like,

  79. are about pushing them down

  80. and about that transformation in life.

  81. And if you've been journeying through this series so far,

  82. all the way with me,

  83. I suppose my question is,

  84. eight weeks in,

  85. what next step have you taken?

  86. what's different?

  87. What has changed?

  88. What are you doing differently now

  89. that you weren't doing before?

  90. Basically, if you get up tomorrow morning

  91. and there's an entire disconnect from today,

  92. what you realise is when you look at these rhythms of life

  93. and when you start to put them into practice,

  94. what you realise is that there's a fight on all the time.

  95. All the time.

  96. There is for me.

  97. You should not assume that

  98. as I ascend the stairs to the office at church,

  99. there's a halo that kind of follows me.

  100. You shouldn't assume that

  101. because this is my profession

  102. that somehow that I don't have a fight on

  103. every single day as a disciple of Jesus.

  104. I hope you got that from the very first sermon

  105. where I basically,

  106. within three or four minutes,

  107. was vulnerable to you

  108. in terms of my own day-by-day struggles

  109. as a disciple of Jesus.

  110. There is a fight on every day.

  111. And so what this means is

  112. that self-control is crucial in life.

  113. And that's really the message today

  114. as we look to take our next steps.

  115. What does it mean to have a life of self-control

  116. in order to put these into practice?

  117. So if you've got the St Paul's app,

  118. you'll see three things there.

  119. The first one is the heart and self-control.

  120. Now, the word for self-control in 1 Corinthians 9,

  121. which is just read out to us,

  122. is actually in verse 25,

  123. even though it wasn't in the English version

  124. that was read out.

  125. In the original language,

  126. the word there is,

  127. everyone who competes in the games

  128. goes into, the English says,

  129. strict training.

  130. Literally, it means self-rule.

  131. Anyone who competes in the games

  132. goes into self-rule or self-control.

  133. That is, the athlete exerts self-control,

  134. self-rule in all things.

  135. The runner runs for the prize,

  136. the athlete for the crown,

  137. the boxer,

  138. which is another one there,

  139. another word,

  140. is to strike a blow.

  141. That's what they do.

  142. The boxer doesn't go into strict training

  143. in order to punch the air.

  144. They go into strict training

  145. to punch a chin

  146. or whatever it can,

  147. above the belt.

  148. Paul says here that he beats his body.

  149. And by that he means

  150. he is wearing down his resistance

  151. in every area of his life

  152. so that he might reach the goal.

  153. In case,

  154. the prize is in verse 27.

  155. He says,

  156. I strike a blow to my body

  157. and make it my slave

  158. so that after I have preached to others,

  159. I myself will not be disqualified

  160. for the prize.

  161. He exercises self-control

  162. to make sure that his life itself

  163. aligns with his belief,

  164. with what he preaches.

  165. And the secret ingredient for Paul in that

  166. is the heart.

  167. It's the heart.

  168. In modern times,

  169. we tend to think

  170. that the secret to self-control

  171. is willpower.

  172. And particularly in Western culture,

  173. we think that the secret to self-control

  174. is willpower.

  175. You know,

  176. athletes,

  177. you know,

  178. they just have this extraordinary,

  179. powerful mind

  180. and are able to,

  181. you know,

  182. assert the will

  183. over everything.

  184. So if I had placed before me

  185. a bucket of Rocky Road ice cream

  186. and I want to eat it all,

  187. what I need to do

  188. is I need to convince myself

  189. that if I was to eat it all,

  190. then it would be really bad for me,

  191. really bad for me.

  192. And so I need to assert my willpower

  193. over the desire of the heart

  194. to eat an entire bucket

  195. of Rocky Road ice cream

  196. or one of those big buckets of KFC

  197. or whatever it is

  198. that you're...

  199. Now,

  200. so in other words,

  201. the modern concept of self-control

  202. is an exercise of the mind.

  203. It is willpower

  204. over emotions

  205. and desires

  206. and feelings,

  207. which is exactly

  208. how the ancients regarded

  209. willpower

  210. or self-control.

  211. In ancient Greek stoicism,

  212. that was their concept

  213. of self-control.

  214. Stoicism regarded

  215. that a life lived well

  216. was a virtuous life,

  217. a good life.

  218. Virtues,

  219. really four main ones

  220. for the Stoics

  221. was wisdom,

  222. justice,

  223. courage,

  224. and self-control.

  225. And so for the Stoics,

  226. like all of Greek culture,

  227. which Western civilization

  228. is built on,

  229. the mind,

  230. knowledge,

  231. reason

  232. was always

  233. supreme

  234. over emotions,

  235. feelings,

  236. and desires.

  237. They emphasized

  238. the importance

  239. of self-control

  240. and emotional regulation

  241. to navigate life well.

  242. So you can have

  243. a very strong

  244. desire for something,

  245. but self-control

  246. was to ensure

  247. that you

  248. convinced yourself

  249. of

  250. negating

  251. the desire

  252. and pursuing

  253. the rational.

  254. If you can rid

  255. your life of desires,

  256. feelings,

  257. and emotions,

  258. then you are living

  259. a virtuous life.

  260. Now the Bible

  261. does not think

  262. of self-control

  263. as taking

  264. the mind

  265. and will

  266. and asserting

  267. it over

  268. the desires,

  269. the feelings,

  270. and the emotions.

  271. Primarily

  272. because in the Bible

  273. humanity

  274. is made in God's image

  275. and therefore

  276. desires,

  277. feelings,

  278. and emotions

  279. are part of

  280. who we are.

  281. It's part of

  282. the whole person.

  283. But verse 25

  284. gives us

  285. the Bible's

  286. key

  287. to self-rule,

  288. self-control.

  289. Everyone

  290. who competes

  291. in the games

  292. goes into

  293. strict training,

  294. goes into

  295. self-rule.

  296. They do it

  297. to get

  298. a crown

  299. that will

  300. not last,

  301. but we,

  302. and he's referring

  303. to Christians here,

  304. we do it

  305. to get a crown

  306. that will last

  307. forever.

  308. What Paul's saying

  309. here,

  310. the Bible's view

  311. is,

  312. it's not

  313. that an athlete

  314. doesn't want

  315. to eat

  316. a bucket

  317. of Rocky Road

  318. ice cream,

  319. or their equivalent.

  320. it's not

  321. that they

  322. don't want

  323. to stay

  324. up all

  325. night

  326. with their

  327. friends

  328. and party.

  329. It's not

  330. that they

  331. don't want

  332. to sleep

  333. in

  334. every day

  335. or most

  336. days,

  337. particularly

  338. if they're

  339. teenagers.

  340. And they

  341. don't really

  342. want the

  343. fatigue,

  344. they don't

  345. really want

  346. the exertion,

  347. and they

  348. don't really

  349. want the

  350. expenses,

  351. and they

  352. don't really

  353. want the

  354. injuries.

  355. But what

  356. they do

  357. want,

  358. more than

  359. anything else,

  360. is the

  361. prize,

  362. the crown,

  363. the medal.

  364. That's what

  365. they want.

  366. You see,

  367. self-control

  368. is not a

  369. matter of

  370. the will,

  371. it's a matter

  372. of the heart,

  373. it's a matter

  374. of what it

  375. is that you

  376. set your

  377. desire on.

  378. it's a

  379. matter of

  380. what you

  381. have

  382. affections

  383. for.

  384. Self-control

  385. is about

  386. setting the

  387. heart,

  388. the driving

  389. centre of

  390. the life,

  391. which is

  392. the way

  393. the Bible

  394. understands

  395. it,

  396. on the

  397. nobler,

  398. higher,

  399. and most

  400. important,

  401. greater

  402. thing.

  403. Self-control

  404. is not

  405. that some

  406. people have

  407. a stronger

  408. will than

  409. others,

  410. or less

  411. feelings

  412. and emotions

  413. and desires

  414. than others.

  415. It's a

  416. matter of

  417. what we

  418. set our

  419. hearts

  420. on.

  421. What we

  422. desire

  423. the most,

  424. the thing

  425. that the

  426. heart

  427. most wants,

  428. orders

  429. all of

  430. the other

  431. desires of

  432. the heart.

  433. self-control

  434. is about

  435. setting our

  436. hearts and

  437. our desires

  438. on the

  439. one

  440. major

  441. want

  442. in life,

  443. and that

  444. major want

  445. will order

  446. all the

  447. other major

  448. wants in

  449. life,

  450. even as

  451. a diabetic.

  452. Frankly,

  453. there are

  454. times when

  455. I would

  456. love to

  457. eat a

  458. bucket of

  459. Rocky Road

  460. ice cream.

  461. But,

  462. more than

  463. a love

  464. for Rocky

  465. Road

  466. ice cream

  467. is a

  468. love to

  469. be alive,

  470. a love

  471. to be

  472. healthy,

  473. a love

  474. to be

  475. functioning,

  476. a love

  477. for all

  478. of my

  479. limbs to

  480. stay

  481. attached,

  482. and for

  483. me not

  484. to be

  485. blind,

  486. for instance.

  487. That is

  488. a greater

  489. love for

  490. me than

  491. Rocky

  492. Road

  493. ice cream.

  494. The

  495. higher

  496. want

  497. or love

  498. or desire

  499. will

  500. always

  501. win,

  502. always

  503. win.

  504. What

  505. main

  506. thing we

  507. set our

  508. hearts

  509. on

  510. is the

  511. thing

  512. that we

  513. will

  514. think,

  515. it's the

  516. thing that

  517. we think

  518. will fill

  519. our deepest

  520. longings of

  521. our heart.

  522. will

  523. make us

  524. something,

  525. that will

  526. set us

  527. apart.

  528. The

  529. thing that

  530. we think

  531. will make

  532. us win

  533. will

  534. always

  535. win.

  536. Thomas

  537. Chalmers

  538. was a

  539. Scottish

  540. Presbyterian

  541. minister,

  542. professor of

  543. theology,

  544. he was a

  545. political

  546. economist.

  547. He's been

  548. referred to

  549. once upon

  550. a time

  551. as

  552. Scotland's

  553. greatest

  554. 19th

  555. century

  556. churchman.

  557. He preached

  558. a very

  559. famous

  560. sermon

  561. called

  562. The

  563. Expulsive

  564. Power of

  565. a New

  566. Affection.

  567. He made

  568. the powerful

  569. point that

  570. bondage to

  571. sin and

  572. self is

  573. only truly

  574. broken by

  575. a stronger

  576. affection.

  577. One

  578. affection is

  579. only ever

  580. removed from

  581. the place of

  582. primary existence

  583. in our

  584. heart, the

  585. depths of

  586. our heart,

  587. by a much

  588. stronger

  589. affection.

  590. All of

  591. our actions

  592. and our

  593. habits in

  594. life are

  595. connected to

  596. our deepest

  597. desire in

  598. life.

  599. Bad

  600. habits are

  601. only replaced

  602. by more

  603. compelling

  604. joy in

  605. life.

  606. Now I've

  607. updated the

  608. language a

  609. little bit for

  610. our context

  611. and not

  612. doing it in a

  613. Scottish accent

  614. in any way

  615. even though that

  616. is my

  617. heritage but

  618. in essence he

  619. wrote this,

  620. says, we

  621. only cease to

  622. be the

  623. slave of

  624. one appetite

  625. because another

  626. has brought

  627. it into

  628. subordination.

  629. A youth

  630. may cease to

  631. idolise

  632. sensual

  633. pleasure but

  634. it's because

  635. the idol of

  636. wealth and

  637. career success

  638. has gotten

  639. the ascendancy.

  640. There is not

  641. one personal

  642. transformation

  643. where the

  644. heart is not

  645. left without

  646. an object of

  647. desire.

  648. The heart's

  649. desire for

  650. one particular

  651. object may

  652. be conquered

  653. but the

  654. desire to

  655. have some

  656. object is

  657. unconquerable.

  658. There is no

  659. void in other

  660. words of desire

  661. in the heart

  662. and it

  663. controls

  664. everything in

  665. life.

  666. The only way

  667. to dispossess

  668. the heart of

  669. an old

  670. affection is

  671. by the

  672. expulsive

  673. power of

  674. a new

  675. one.

  676. If we set

  677. our hearts

  678. on being

  679. the best

  680. athlete in

  681. any kind

  682. of particular

  683. discipline,

  684. it will bring

  685. self-control

  686. in some

  687. things but

  688. it will never

  689. bring self-control

  690. in all

  691. things.

  692. If you find

  693. you are not

  694. the best,

  695. it will always

  696. be just out

  697. of reach and

  698. you will start

  699. to lose

  700. control of

  701. your emotions.

  702. you will

  703. start to

  704. blame other

  705. people.

  706. Relationships

  707. will suffer.

  708. If career

  709. success,

  710. then some

  711. things will

  712. be able to

  713. be self-controlled

  714. but not all

  715. things.

  716. If it's

  717. family harmony,

  718. you'll be able

  719. to control

  720. some things

  721. but not all

  722. things.

  723. So,

  724. this brings us

  725. to the second

  726. point.

  727. What is the

  728. one thing

  729. that if we

  730. set our

  731. hearts on

  732. it will

  733. bring us

  734. self-control

  735. in all

  736. things.

  737. And we

  738. get that

  739. in verse

  740. 23.

  741. I do

  742. all

  743. this

  744. for the

  745. sake of

  746. the gospel

  747. that I

  748. may share

  749. in its

  750. blessings.

  751. When Paul

  752. writes there,

  753. I do all

  754. this,

  755. he's looking

  756. back to

  757. what he's

  758. written in

  759. chapters

  760. 7 to

  761. 9 and

  762. actually

  763. looking forward

  764. as well

  765. into what

  766. he's about

  767. to write

  768. in the

  769. rest of

  770. 9 and

  771. into 10

  772. which if

  773. you look

  774. at it all,

  775. the theme

  776. of self-control

  777. is the thing

  778. that floats

  779. through the

  780. whole thing

  781. and he does

  782. it all

  783. for God's

  784. glory.

  785. All of it.

  786. And bear

  787. in mind

  788. that when he

  789. talks about

  790. a life of

  791. sacrificial service

  792. of all people

  793. and of God,

  794. this is the

  795. Paul who

  796. endured so

  797. much personal

  798. sacrifice.

  799. He suffered

  800. so much

  801. in life.

  802. so much

  803. hardship.

  804. He consistently

  805. surrendered his

  806. personal freedom

  807. and at the

  808. same time,

  809. this is the

  810. Apostle Paul

  811. who virtually

  812. in every list

  813. that I've seen

  814. to this day

  815. is listed

  816. as one of the

  817. top 10

  818. most influential

  819. people

  820. in the history

  821. of humanity

  822. to this day.

  823. And Paul

  824. tells us

  825. that this

  826. life of

  827. self-control

  828. has one

  829. source.

  830. It is one

  831. desire of

  832. the heart

  833. for the

  834. sake of

  835. the gospel

  836. that I

  837. may share

  838. in its

  839. blessings.

  840. Now there's

  841. one desire,

  842. two aspects.

  843. The blessings

  844. of the gospel.

  845. The gospel,

  846. as I said

  847. last week,

  848. is fundamentally

  849. the absolute

  850. core foundational

  851. message of the

  852. Christian faith.

  853. life-altering

  854. news

  855. that even

  856. though I

  857. am deeply

  858. sinful

  859. and evil

  860. and flawed

  861. and deserving

  862. of God's

  863. judgment

  864. because of

  865. my rejection

  866. of God,

  867. of our

  868. created God,

  869. the world

  870. who's made

  871. all things,

  872. I've rejected

  873. him by

  874. determining

  875. to live

  876. life my

  877. own way

  878. as myself

  879. as Lord

  880. and master

  881. of my own

  882. life,

  883. that if I

  884. put my

  885. trust in

  886. the substitutionary

  887. death of

  888. Jesus Christ,

  889. the Son of

  890. God,

  891. who died

  892. on a Roman

  893. cross in

  894. history,

  895. I am

  896. forgiven,

  897. I'm loved,

  898. I'm affirmed,

  899. and I'm at

  900. peace with

  901. God.

  902. And God's

  903. love for me

  904. in Jesus

  905. Christ is

  906. as high

  907. as the

  908. heavens are

  909. above.

  910. In Jesus

  911. I am

  912. unconditionally,

  913. unchangeably,

  914. constantly,

  915. eternally,

  916. delighted in

  917. by God.

  918. despite who

  919. I am,

  920. despite my

  921. falls and

  922. my failures.

  923. That's the

  924. message of

  925. Easter.

  926. So that's

  927. coming up

  928. in the next

  929. four weeks.

  930. We're looking

  931. at the hope

  932. of the gospel.

  933. And what

  934. Paul says

  935. is if the

  936. main thing

  937. that I set

  938. my heart

  939. on is

  940. that good

  941. news,

  942. if that is

  943. the thing

  944. that's the

  945. driving centre

  946. of my life,

  947. if that is

  948. my joy

  949. and my

  950. hope,

  951. then self-control

  952. is possible

  953. in all

  954. things.

  955. Because

  956. in Jesus

  957. I am

  958. affirmed

  959. already

  960. despite my

  961. performance.

  962. I am

  963. loved and

  964. accepted already

  965. despite my

  966. performance.

  967. I have the

  968. praise of

  969. the praise

  970. worthy.

  971. You see,

  972. the gospel

  973. is the

  974. only thing

  975. that I

  976. can set

  977. my heart

  978. on and

  979. never

  980. lose it.

  981. The

  982. radical

  983. security

  984. of the

  985. gospel

  986. means

  987. we don't

  988. have to

  989. secure it,

  990. don't have

  991. to maintain

  992. it,

  993. don't have

  994. to keep

  995. it.

  996. It's

  997. guaranteed.

  998. Notice

  999. though that

  1000. the gift

  1001. of the

  1002. gospel

  1003. does not

  1004. lead to

  1005. passivity

  1006. on Paul's

  1007. behalf.

  1008. See the

  1009. rest of the

  1010. sentence,

  1011. that I

  1012. may share

  1013. in its

  1014. blessings.

  1015. Now the

  1016. word share

  1017. there is

  1018. a word that

  1019. means partnership

  1020. in the

  1021. original New

  1022. Testament

  1023. language.

  1024. Paul's

  1025. passion is

  1026. to share

  1027. the benefits

  1028. of the

  1029. gospel to

  1030. others.

  1031. The passion

  1032. of his

  1033. heart was

  1034. for others

  1035. to see

  1036. the ultimate

  1037. treasure

  1038. that Jesus

  1039. Christ and

  1040. the gospel

  1041. really are.

  1042. and this

  1043. meant for

  1044. him that

  1045. he wanted

  1046. to make

  1047. sure that

  1048. there was

  1049. nothing in

  1050. his life

  1051. that would

  1052. cause others

  1053. to miss

  1054. the ultimate

  1055. treasure that

  1056. Jesus is.

  1057. He didn't

  1058. want anything

  1059. to disqualify

  1060. him from

  1061. that prize,

  1062. the prize of

  1063. sharing the

  1064. blessings of

  1065. the gospel

  1066. with others.

  1067. that is,

  1068. if you look

  1069. at it,

  1070. Paul's

  1071. fundamental

  1072. focus in

  1073. life,

  1074. his main

  1075. desire was

  1076. actually away

  1077. from himself.

  1078. You see,

  1079. when I

  1080. train for

  1081. a run,

  1082. and I

  1083. don't put

  1084. myself in

  1085. the athlete

  1086. category at

  1087. all,

  1088. when I

  1089. train for

  1090. a run

  1091. that I'm

  1092. participating

  1093. in,

  1094. I exercise

  1095. self-control

  1096. in that

  1097. part of my

  1098. life so

  1099. that I

  1100. can achieve

  1101. something for

  1102. myself.

  1103. Normally a

  1104. finish is

  1105. medal,

  1106. that's about

  1107. it really,

  1108. just finished.

  1109. if I get

  1110. there in

  1111. time,

  1112. they're all

  1113. gone.

  1114. Ironically,

  1115. the one

  1116. thing I'm

  1117. doing as

  1118. I'm training

  1119. for that

  1120. goal,

  1121. for me

  1122. historically,

  1123. the one

  1124. thing that

  1125. I'm not

  1126. able to

  1127. control is

  1128. how much

  1129. I train

  1130. myself.

  1131. I tend

  1132. to always

  1133. run myself

  1134. into an

  1135. injury.

  1136. Paul

  1137. rests

  1138. secure in

  1139. the good

  1140. news of

  1141. Jesus

  1142. Christ as

  1143. the deepest

  1144. desire of

  1145. his heart

  1146. and from

  1147. there it

  1148. drives him

  1149. out to

  1150. exercise

  1151. self-control

  1152. in all

  1153. areas of

  1154. life that

  1155. he might

  1156. share it

  1157. with others.

  1158. You see,

  1159. the gospel

  1160. loudly

  1161. proclaims

  1162. that in

  1163. Jesus

  1164. everything

  1165. that we

  1166. need for

  1167. life and

  1168. salvation

  1169. is already

  1170. done.

  1171. It's not

  1172. something that

  1173. we do.

  1174. We receive

  1175. God's

  1176. approval,

  1177. we don't

  1178. achieve it.

  1179. And yet

  1180. Paul is

  1181. not

  1182. passive.

  1183. Now,

  1184. over this

  1185. term,

  1186. we've been

  1187. looking at

  1188. seven rhythms

  1189. and these

  1190. seven rhythms,

  1191. what they're

  1192. doing is

  1193. constantly

  1194. keeping the

  1195. gospel in

  1196. front of

  1197. us.

  1198. And these

  1199. seven rhythms

  1200. push it down

  1201. into our

  1202. hearts to

  1203. bring about

  1204. the change

  1205. of character

  1206. and priorities

  1207. that the

  1208. gospel demands.

  1209. These are

  1210. rhythms that

  1211. are done

  1212. privately and

  1213. corporately

  1214. because we

  1215. need the

  1216. clarity and

  1217. the accountability

  1218. and the

  1219. support of

  1220. others on

  1221. the journey

  1222. to bring

  1223. about that

  1224. change.

  1225. All of

  1226. these rhythms

  1227. are both

  1228. private and

  1229. corporate.

  1230. They are not

  1231. things we

  1232. do to win

  1233. God's

  1234. favour.

  1235. We pursue

  1236. them because

  1237. we have

  1238. God's favour

  1239. in the

  1240. gospel of

  1241. Jesus.

  1242. And these

  1243. rhythms take

  1244. us deeper

  1245. and deeper

  1246. and deeper

  1247. into the

  1248. good news.

  1249. Rhythms like

  1250. these are

  1251. in fact God's

  1252. gracious gift

  1253. to us.

  1254. Gracious

  1255. gift to us

  1256. for our

  1257. endurance and

  1258. growth into

  1259. all the

  1260. blessings of

  1261. what we have

  1262. in Jesus.

  1263. The key

  1264. to endurance,

  1265. the key to

  1266. self-control

  1267. is the

  1268. gospel.

  1269. and with

  1270. self-control

  1271. we see the

  1272. gospel and

  1273. experience the

  1274. gospel more.

  1275. But it's

  1276. not easy.

  1277. And I

  1278. asked the

  1279. question a

  1280. moment ago,

  1281. what are you

  1282. doing differently?

  1283. What's changed

  1284. in the last

  1285. month?

  1286. What are you

  1287. doing differently?

  1288. What steps

  1289. have you

  1290. taken?

  1291. Because the

  1292. reality is

  1293. it's not

  1294. easy,

  1295. it's a

  1296. battle.

  1297. Discipline

  1298. and self-control

  1299. are never

  1300. easy.

  1301. Many a

  1302. time we

  1303. will want

  1304. to give

  1305. up because

  1306. we are

  1307. weary or

  1308. losing heart.

  1309. And if we

  1310. are not

  1311. pursuing these

  1312. disciplines or

  1313. disciplines like

  1314. these, it's

  1315. actually one of

  1316. the key signs

  1317. that you

  1318. are in fact

  1319. losing heart

  1320. and weary.

  1321. We must

  1322. never take

  1323. our eyes

  1324. therefore off

  1325. the endurance

  1326. of Jesus,

  1327. the self-control

  1328. of Jesus.

  1329. And one

  1330. of the best

  1331. descriptions

  1332. of this is

  1333. chapter 12

  1334. verses 1

  1335. to 3.

  1336. Now these

  1337. sentences,

  1338. if you want

  1339. to stick it

  1340. up on the

  1341. screen,

  1342. these sentences

  1343. highlight the

  1344. self-control

  1345. of Jesus

  1346. Christ.

  1347. Jesus knew

  1348. everything that

  1349. happened to

  1350. him was going

  1351. to happen to

  1352. him.

  1353. He knew

  1354. that he

  1355. would be

  1356. betrayed,

  1357. he knew

  1358. that he

  1359. would be

  1360. abandoned,

  1361. he knew

  1362. that he

  1363. would be

  1364. killed and

  1365. yet he

  1366. still did

  1367. it.

  1368. He did

  1369. it so

  1370. well in

  1371. fact,

  1372. it says

  1373. there that

  1374. he endured

  1375. the cross

  1376. and he

  1377. scorned

  1378. its shame.

  1379. So where

  1380. did he get

  1381. the self-control

  1382. to endure

  1383. the hardship

  1384. and the

  1385. self-control

  1386. to regard

  1387. the shame

  1388. of the

  1389. cross,

  1390. dying on

  1391. that cross

  1392. for the

  1393. sin of

  1394. humanity

  1395. regarding it

  1396. as absolutely

  1397. nothing?

  1398. Was it

  1399. that he

  1400. had a

  1401. great

  1402. willpower,

  1403. more

  1404. willpower

  1405. than any

  1406. other human

  1407. being?

  1408. no.

  1409. It's

  1410. right there

  1411. for the

  1412. joy

  1413. set before

  1414. him,

  1415. he endured

  1416. the cross

  1417. scorning

  1418. its shame.

  1419. You see

  1420. the secret

  1421. of self-control

  1422. is setting

  1423. heart on

  1424. the right

  1425. thing.

  1426. Jesus

  1427. did not

  1428. have

  1429. willpower,

  1430. he had

  1431. joy power.

  1432. so what

  1433. was it

  1434. that Jesus

  1435. set his

  1436. heart on

  1437. that gave

  1438. him such

  1439. joy

  1440. that he

  1441. endured

  1442. such

  1443. rejection

  1444. as the

  1445. cross,

  1446. the shame

  1447. of the

  1448. cross?

  1449. What was

  1450. the joy

  1451. that was

  1452. before Jesus?

  1453. What

  1454. did he

  1455. set his

  1456. heart on

  1457. that led

  1458. him to

  1459. endure

  1460. what he

  1461. endured?

  1462. to

  1463. exercise

  1464. the

  1465. self-rule

  1466. of

  1467. allowing

  1468. people

  1469. that he

  1470. created

  1471. to nail

  1472. him to

  1473. a cross?

  1474. What was

  1475. the passion

  1476. of his

  1477. heart

  1478. that gave

  1479. him such

  1480. self-control?

  1481. for?

  1482. Now,

  1483. a few

  1484. times in

  1485. the past

  1486. as I've

  1487. looked at

  1488. this,

  1489. let me

  1490. make it

  1491. brief.

  1492. It's the

  1493. one thing,

  1494. it's the

  1495. one thing

  1496. that an

  1497. eternal,

  1498. perfect,

  1499. satisfied,

  1500. loved,

  1501. fulfilled,

  1502. powerful God

  1503. did not

  1504. have before

  1505. the cross.

  1506. And that's

  1507. you.

  1508. That's me.

  1509. It's

  1510. humanity.

  1511. humanity.

  1512. It's what

  1513. drove you

  1514. and I

  1515. are the

  1516. ones that

  1517. drove him

  1518. to the

  1519. cross.

  1520. And yet,

  1521. the joy

  1522. of what

  1523. would be

  1524. achieved in

  1525. bringing us

  1526. back to

  1527. him,

  1528. meant that

  1529. he exercised

  1530. self-control

  1531. and allowed

  1532. us to do

  1533. it.

  1534. Rebellious,

  1535. sinful,

  1536. humanity

  1537. created for

  1538. him,

  1539. but setting

  1540. the passions

  1541. of their

  1542. heart on

  1543. everything else

  1544. but him.

  1545. Jesus

  1546. endured,

  1547. self-disciplined

  1548. because he

  1549. loves us

  1550. like that.

  1551. Grasping

  1552. that truth

  1553. more and

  1554. more,

  1555. looking to

  1556. the cross

  1557. more and

  1558. more,

  1559. will cause

  1560. us to

  1561. love him

  1562. like that.

  1563. The secret

  1564. to a life

  1565. of self-control

  1566. is pursuing

  1567. these rhythms

  1568. of grace

  1569. which constantly

  1570. put the

  1571. gospel in

  1572. front of

  1573. us,

  1574. not,

  1575. not

  1576. willpower,

  1577. joy.

  1578. It's

  1579. joy in

  1580. Jesus

  1581. and the

  1582. gospel.

  1583. In the

  1584. power of

  1585. the gospel

  1586. of Jesus

  1587. Christ to

  1588. fill our

  1589. deepest

  1590. longings

  1591. and desires

  1592. of our

  1593. hearts,

  1594. the gospel

  1595. of Jesus

  1596. Christ is

  1597. the only

  1598. expulsive

  1599. power and

  1600. the ultimate

  1601. desire and

  1602. affection of the

  1603. heart that

  1604. will drive

  1605. out every

  1606. other desire,

  1607. the ones

  1608. that your

  1609. day-to-day

  1610. practices and

  1611. habits in

  1612. life are

  1613. currently

  1614. demonstrating

  1615. that you're

  1616. pursuing

  1617. and that

  1618. I'm

  1619. pursuing.

  1620. The

  1621. rhythms of

  1622. grace flow

  1623. out of a

  1624. gospel-renewed

  1625. heart but

  1626. they are

  1627. also the

  1628. agents,

  1629. the means

  1630. of heart

  1631. renewal so

  1632. that Jesus

  1633. becomes our

  1634. delight and

  1635. joy as

  1636. we are

  1637. his.

  1638. And so

  1639. as we

  1640. finish off

  1641. this service

  1642. today,

  1643. we're just

  1644. going to

  1645. look to

  1646. Jesus one

  1647. last time

  1648. as we

  1649. participate

  1650. in the

  1651. Lord's

  1652. Supper

  1653. together.

  1654. We're

  1655. going to

  1656. gaze on

  1657. Jesus as

  1658. we participate

  1659. in this.

  1660. We're going

  1661. to lift our

  1662. hearts to

  1663. him this

  1664. morning as

  1665. we eat

  1666. and we

  1667. drink with

  1668. grateful

  1669. hearts

  1670. for the

  1671. mercy of

  1672. his love

  1673. for us,

  1674. mercy that

  1675. saw him

  1676. joyfully

  1677. self-controlled

  1678. as he

  1679. endured the

  1680. cross to

  1681. win back

  1682. rebellious

  1683. creation,

  1684. humanity back

  1685. into relationship

  1686. with himself

  1687. and to give

  1688. us an

  1689. affirmation,

  1690. a love,

  1691. a security,

  1692. a hope that

  1693. will never

  1694. be taken

  1695. away.

  1696. Amen.
