  1. What happens when one is faced with impending doom?

  2. ! In Gravity, Sandra Bullock's character, stranded in space, faces death alone.

  3. ! And so what does she do?

  4. She says, no one will mourn for me.

  5. I'll pray for myself, but I've never prayed.

  6. Nobody ever taught me how.

  7. And that's what fear does.

  8. Fear strips us.

  9. Fear shows us what we believe, what we hope might actually save us.

  10. And when faced with this unavoidable doom, we instinctively turn to something for help.

  11. We turn to something that will save.

  12. And last week, Nick beautifully set up the premise of Jonah for us.

  13. And we see a prophet who has received the word of God, yet has decided to depart from that same word.

  14. And what today's passage brings us is the question of what is the role of fear for the Christian?

  15. In fact, what is the role, maybe even with the circumstances that bring fear for the Christian?

  16. In other words, the question this passage deems to answer is, where is God amidst our fear?

  17. Where is he?

  18. What is he doing?

  19. And to answer that question, we need to unpack both the idea of fear and grace in this passage.

  20. And so the three simple points are, number one, the character of fear, the character of grace, and lastly, fear the gracious one.

  21. Those points are also in your St. Paul's app if you want to open that up to follow along and take some notes.

  22. But firstly, the character of fear.

  23. Notice in this passage, as we read it, the predominant emotion that keeps coming up, that surrounds all of the characters, is fear.

  24. Jonah and the sailors are situated in the sea, and suddenly there is a great storm, the cause of their fear.

  25. And it is not just an ordinary one, a storm that threatens to break the ship apart.

  26. And so again, they are facing this impending doom, this certain death by drowning.

  27. And just like us, when we get overwhelmed, the sailors cry out for help.

  28. But their help reveals something.

  29. It reveals something deeper about the nature of their misplaced fear.

  30. But notice how it's worded in verse 5.

  31. All the sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own God.

  32. Each cried out to his own God.

  33. In other words, these sailors, they all have a God, and they're all different.

  34. But the storm didn't stop.

  35. The gods were silent.

  36. Multiple.

  37. All of the things, all of the things that they put their trust and their faith in, they are powerless.

  38. And so what do they do?

  39. Immediately what we see in the same verse is that they start lightening the load of the ship.

  40. So let's throw out the cargo.

  41. And the sailors realise that they have no control.

  42. They cannot control the external.

  43. And if they cannot control the storm, they will ultimately try to save themselves.

  44. That makes sense?

  45. But the logic here is the storm doesn't dissipate.

  46. The logic is when you try to calm your fears with false gods or even yourself, your efforts are futile.

  47. You see, Jonah believed that the Ninevites were not worthy enough to receive the mercy and grace of God for the evil works that they had done.

  48. And in a sense, he is right.

  49. But that is what God's mercy and grace is at display, because there is no good work that one can do to receive the forgiveness and pardon of God.

  50. And so what we're presented here is that not even our hardest efforts can even satisfy not just God, but your own deepest longing or even solve your own fear.

  51. And so where was God in this storm?

  52. You see, God gives an undeserving people who have rejected him his mercy, and it's a reminder to turn back to him.

  53. And where does it happen?

  54. At the very beginning of Jonah, it says,

  55. It is the word of God that goes out to bring an unrepentant people to his fold.

  56. The word of God.

  57. It is spoken to an unwilling prophet who must literally be reminded of God's compassion,

  58. who flees and departs from the word and the will of God.

  59. And so what happens?

  60. That wonderful word in verse 4.

  61. But, that magical word, but the Lord sent a storm.

  62. This is a divine storm, one that God intentions and plans, and he sends it.

  63. It's not reckless.

  64. It's not unplanned.

  65. It's sort of spontaneous.

  66. Ooh, let's play a storm.

  67. He is the author of this experience.

  68. He is fully sovereign over every moment of your life, and so too of this storm.

  69. And the question is, where is God?

  70. What is he doing here?

  71. And this is the character of grace.

  72. God uses this moment to redirect Jonah, who tries to flee, not just from the ways of the Lord,

  73. but what is best for him and the Ninevites.

  74. Because God could have just let Jonah run.

  75. He could have let Ninevites stay in the dark.

  76. But his grace won't be ignored.

  77. And there's this interesting phrase that has travelled around the Christian community,

  78. and I appreciate its sentiment, but I don't know if the Bible fully affirms it, and it's this.

  79. How will the nations know if we do not go?

  80. Or how could we judge the one who does not know God if they haven't been told about Jesus?

  81. And what I appreciate by questions like that is that it plays on this sense of urgency,

  82. which is true of Scripture.

  83. It's this outward desperation that you must go.

  84. And there is a reality that I do want to say, St. Paul's,

  85. are you really on mission?

  86. Are you on fire for Jesus?

  87. Have you considered the nations?

  88. What is your heart for the lost?

  89. But I don't want to pray on anxiety to push you on mission,

  90. because I don't think it's right to.

  91. Because this passage, and like many, are saying that God's grace is at display in a non-Christian's life,

  92. in a Christian's life, in everyone's life, that is so visible, that's so tangible,

  93. that's so evident, that it's an opportunity to turn back to him.

  94. Sometimes it's not a big storm.

  95. It might be that quiet realisation that work has become a personal religion,

  96. and there's this gaping hole in your life.

  97. But God's usage of the storm is grace to reveal that he is present.

  98. He is the sovereign one.

  99. In fact, Romans 1 makes it clear that no one has an excuse from seeing the presence, reality, and existence of God.

  100. So in other words, when you're in crisis mode,

  101. and you see that you are helpless,

  102. and you're in need of God,

  103. that's God's grace.

  104. And there is no excuse,

  105. for God uses every mode to point in life back to him.

  106. Have you watched any of those videos of children being jabbed by vaccinations?

  107. If you're a parent here, I can imagine that could have been traumatic for you, not the child.

  108. You know, the doctor tries to distract the child,

  109. and some are successful in distracting the baby,

  110. but the jab, regardless of what you do, it still stings.

  111. So they cry, they don't understand,

  112. but the parent does,

  113. and they stay close.

  114. The child finds comfort not in the jab,

  115. even though it's going to be good for them,

  116. but in the parent who knows that it is for their good,

  117. and stays with them.

  118. In the storms of your life,

  119. they are points of grace that say,

  120. turn back to God.

  121. He is the one who will keep your sails above the waves.

  122. Repent from your ways,

  123. and stop allaying your fears from what is worldly,

  124. and pursue Christ.

  125. Find your hidden place in the comfort of Jesus,

  126. amidst the typhoon.

  127. And so just a little aside, St. Paul's,

  128. when you have a friend who comes to you in crisis mode,

  129. how will you witness to the grace of Christ in your life?

  130. And of course, we want to do it really sensitively.

  131. We want to pray heaps, trust entirely.

  132. But we want to ask the Lord,

  133. is this an opportunity for the gospel?

  134. Is this an opportunity where God can display his grace to this person?

  135. I mean, we even see grace in our main flawed witness in Jonah.

  136. Jonah's sin, despite being massive,

  137. is used still by God to display God's might and power

  138. in comparison to their self-will and their false gods.

  139. The irony is here in verse 9.

  140. I am a Hebrew,

  141. and I worship the Lord,

  142. the God of heaven who made the sea and the land.

  143. Friends, this is the guy,

  144. who only six verses ago,

  145. who was shown the opposite of worship.

  146. He tells them of the God who he worships,

  147. yet he does not do that.

  148. He does not obey the creator of all things.

  149. And so what is the immediate response of the sailor

  150. that is in stark contrast of Jonah?

  151. Verse 10.

  152. This terrified them.

  153. In other words,

  154. they truly understand that God,

  155. from his powerful and visible acts,

  156. that he is not one to be messed around with.

  157. And the sailors,

  158. I guess,

  159. when you think about it,

  160. they now have some relationship with God.

  161. It's a fearful one,

  162. but

  163. they now have a name

  164. who controls the winds and the waves.

  165. They know that this is a God

  166. who is in control of this storm,

  167. who brought it.

  168. And the fear of their circumstance

  169. has shifted.

  170. It's shifted to an object of fear.

  171. They fear not the storm,

  172. but of God himself.

  173. And so how does Jonah respond in verse 12?

  174. Pick me up and throw me in the sea,

  175. he replied,

  176. and it will become calm.

  177. I know that it is my fault

  178. that this great storm has come upon you.

  179. My community group this week

  180. is we were discussing

  181. what possible things

  182. could Jonah have done

  183. instead of

  184. verse 12.

  185. I mean,

  186. when you think about it,

  187. he cares more about the sailors

  188. than he does

  189. about

  190. their own sin.

  191. And the obvious thing for Jonah,

  192. you know,

  193. I would assume,

  194. is that when he realizes

  195. that God is the one

  196. that has brought the storm,

  197. it's to repent.

  198. It's to beckon to God.

  199. It's to say,

  200. sorry.

  201. But he's almost this

  202. imperfect,

  203. willing sacrifice,

  204. but not to appease God,

  205. but to appease the sailors

  206. who've been hounding him.

  207. What have you been doing?

  208. Who are you?

  209. What is your business?

  210. And so what happens?

  211. He's thrown overboard,

  212. and the sea becomes calm.

  213. And God uses this,

  214. doesn't he?

  215. There's a shift in their fear.

  216. Look at verse 16.

  217. At this,

  218. the men greatly feared the Lord,

  219. and they offered a sacrifice

  220. to the Lord,

  221. and made vows to him.

  222. There's still a fear here,

  223. but instead of this

  224. frightening terror,

  225. their fear has become worship.

  226. They realize that God

  227. is the sovereign one

  228. who has power over the storm,

  229. and therefore,

  230. he is worthy of their praise

  231. and obedience.

  232. And this is the Lord's grace at work,

  233. to bring such transformation

  234. in their life purely

  235. through the storm.

  236. Friends,

  237. the call for you and me

  238. is to fear the gracious one.

  239. God,

  240. in his providence,

  241. has used the broken,

  242. the storm,

  243. so that you might fear him.

  244. Fear in the reverent sense.

  245. It's not simply an emotional fear

  246. that makes you flee,

  247. or that makes you want to

  248. be filled with dread,

  249. even though that might happen.

  250. fear in the world.

  251. But,

  252. it's a fear you see

  253. when you look out

  254. when you're on the plane,

  255. and you see the vast sea

  256. and land,

  257. and realize

  258. how small you are.

  259. It's the fear that humbles you,

  260. but the weight of God's glory

  261. increases.

  262. For us,

  263. it might be difficult

  264. to understand this sense of fear.

  265. The fear of God

  266. isn't supposed to make you

  267. hide or flee from judgment.

  268. But if God is the one who judges,

  269. if he is the one who is supreme,

  270. who has control of all the events

  271. and sequences in your life,

  272. the only logic is

  273. to run to him.

  274. Eric Thonese says,

  275. in a podcast,

  276. a true fear of the Lord

  277. realizes you can't run from God,

  278. and the only option is

  279. to run to him.

  280. And when you do,

  281. you find

  282. the embracing arms

  283. of a loving father.

  284. It's a fear of reverence

  285. that is met

  286. with God's compassion.

  287. The sailors are almost

  288. this picture

  289. of a rebuke

  290. for the believer,

  291. like Jonah,

  292. who has followed God

  293. all of their life.

  294. And it is asking

  295. you and me,

  296. what have you been turning to

  297. all this time?

  298. In any form

  299. of storm in your life,

  300. whether it's fear of failure,

  301. missing out,

  302. or death,

  303. you will turn to something.

  304. But the question is,

  305. when you are

  306. struck by fear,

  307. are you turning

  308. to the right thing?

  309. Jesus' famous 12 disciples

  310. who shared life with Christ,

  311. they learnt the ways

  312. of the kingdom,

  313. they spent more time

  314. with Jesus

  315. than any other,

  316. and they,

  317. like Jonah,

  318. and the sailors,

  319. were caught in a storm,

  320. and we are asking

  321. the same question.

  322. Do these disciples

  323. turn to the right thing?

  324. And the disciples,

  325. too,

  326. are fearful.

  327. In Mark chapter 4,

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  328. we see that they question Jesus.

  329. They go,

  330. Teacher,

  331. do you not care

  332. that we are perishing?

  333. And so,

  334. what does Jesus do?

  335. Unlike Jonah,

  336. who says,

  337. throw me,

  338. he speaks

  339. to the storm.

  340. He calms the wind

  341. and the waves

  342. just by an utterance.

  343. He simply says,

  344. Peace.

  345. Be still.

  346. What God did for the sailors

  347. when they sacrificed Jonah,

  348. God does better for you

  349. in Jesus.

  350. Jesus can calm the storm

  351. for he created the sea and land.

  352. And God's son is not just

  353. your sacrifice,

  354. but the very one

  355. who can calm your inner storm

  356. for he is God.

  357. friends,

  358. today,

  359. he is with you

  360. amidst the storm

  361. by his spirit.

  362. And when you come

  363. to the foot of the cross,

  364. when you understand

  365. the grace

  366. that you have

  367. in Jesus,

  368. your fears

  369. slowly allay

  370. knowing

  371. that you worship

  372. the God

  373. who formed

  374. and commands

  375. the wind

  376. to spin

  377. and the waves

  378. to roar.

  379. Some of us

  380. might actually

  381. have this huge block

  382. of understanding

  383. God's grace

  384. and compassion

  385. because of the storm

  386. and the suffering.

  387. And so I really want

  388. to address this.

  389. In Jonah,

  390. what we do see

  391. is that the storm

  392. is a result

  393. of Jonah's disobedience.

  394. I mean,

  395. the sailors

  396. would not be caught up

  397. in the storm

  398. if Jonah wasn't

  399. on the boat.

  400. And so the question is,

  401. is the storm

  402. in your life

  403. due to your sin?

  404. Is it punishment?

  405. What happens

  406. if I'm amidst

  407. the storm?

  408. The answer of grace

  409. does not only say

  410. that Jesus took

  411. the punishment

  412. on the cross,

  413. but it promises

  414. God's presence

  415. amidst the storm.

  416. Regardless of a storm

  417. being a consequence

  418. of our foolishness

  419. or it might be

  420. some unimaginable

  421. random tragedy

  422. in your life.

  423. The Lord uses

  424. those moments

  425. as grace

  426. to redeem your heart,

  427. to know that

  428. there is only

  429. one thing

  430. that you can count on.

  431. Friends,

  432. you rest on the promise

  433. and biblical reality

  434. that's set

  435. in Romans 8.28

  436. that says,

  437. and we know

  438. that in all things

  439. God works

  440. for the good

  441. of those

  442. who love him,

  443. who have been

  444. called according

  445. to his promise.

  446. Friends,

  447. there are pockets

  448. of grace

  449. in everything,

  450. both the good

  451. and the awful.

  452. And what that

  453. should cause you

  454. to do

  455. is that they

  456. should cause you

  457. to run.

  458. Your fear

  459. should actually

  460. cause you

  461. to run harder.

  462. Run harder

  463. not from him

  464. but to him.

  465. Not because

  466. he will punish you

  467. but because

  468. he holds you

  469. amidst the storm.

  470. When you experience

  471. joy,

  472. run to the Father

  473. who loves

  474. giving good gifts

  475. to his children.

  476. When you are

  477. stuck in doubt,

  478. come to God

  479. who brings you

  480. the spirit

  481. of truth.

  482. When dark days

  483. are all around,

  484. seek Christ,

  485. the Prince

  486. of Peace.

  487. For the solution

  488. of fear

  489. is not a suppression,

  490. it's not to ignore,

  491. it's to run.

  492. But don't run away.

  493. Run toward

  494. the Father.

  495. The Father

  496. by whom

  497. you had received

  498. the best

  499. by his son

  500. on the cross

  501. despite you

  502. being at your worst.

  503. And so the question

  504. at the beginning

  505. I asked,

  506. what is God

  507. doing

  508. in the storm

  509. of my life?

  510. Where is God

  511. amidst our fear?

  512. And the answer

  513. is God

  514. is showing

  515. his grace

  516. to you

  517. so that you

  518. would fear him.

  519. To fear

  520. the gracious

  521. one.

  522. Friends,

  523. you've looked

  524. out

  525. from the windowsill

  526. and seen

  527. this stormy

  528. tapestry

  529. unfold.

  530. But I wonder

  531. if there are

  532. similarities

  533. from Jonah

  534. that align

  535. with our lives.

  536. Some of you

  537. here

  538. have come

  539. to church

  540. over the

  541. many years

  542. and you hear

  543. the gospel

  544. of Jesus

  545. that Jesus

  546. died for your

  547. sins

  548. so that you

  549. can be made

  550. right with him.

  551. But Jesus

  552. is only a matter

  553. of the spiritual.

  554. It's only a matter

  555. of heaven.

  556. But does he

  557. shape

  558. your everyday?

  559. I'll listen

  560. to the Bible

  561. and maybe

  562. the pastor

  563. even

  564. when I want

  565. to know

  566. what God

  567. is doing

  568. or to ask

  569. about the

  570. afterlife.

  571. What happens?

  572. What comes

  573. after?

  574. But when it

  575. comes to

  576. my job,

  577. my family,

  578. my time,

  579. my house,

  580. my spending

  581. choices,

  582. that's for me.

  583. God's grace

  584. and what

  585. he has done

  586. in my life

  587. don't actually

  588. take account

  589. into all

  590. the other

  591. spheres.

  592. And I wonder

  593. if that's

  594. sometimes how

  595. we treat

  596. God,

  597. intentionally

  598. and sometimes

  599. absolutely

  600. subconsciously.

  601. But God

  602. has made

  603. you to

  604. worship

  605. and has

  606. made

  607. everything

  608. to point

  609. to his

  610. grace.

  611. The winds

  612. and the

  613. waves

  614. are so wild

  615. that you

  616. can't

  617. escape

  618. seeing

  619. that God

  620. is saying

  621. look,

  622. look at

  623. what I'm

  624. doing.

  625. I'm the

  626. one who

  627. made you.

  628. Turn to

  629. me because

  630. I am

  631. your rock,

  632. your refuge,

  633. your strength,

  634. your solace.

  635. I am

  636. to be

  637. your hiding

  638. place.

  639. The winds

  640. and the

  641. waves in

  642. your life

  643. may not

  644. even be

  645. big.

  646. You might

  647. be in a

  648. season that

  649. fills you

  650. with joy,

  651. but don't

  652. miss the

  653. sign.

  654. How is

  655. God

  656. showing

  657. his

  658. grace

  659. to you?

  660. Maybe

  661. your heart

  662. is sitting

  663. in

  664. dissatisfaction

  665. or discontent

  666. with the

  667. state of

  668. your life,

  669. but God's

  670. grace is

  671. so deeply

  672. visible and

  673. grand

  674. that it

  675. is

  676. inescapable.

  677. And so

  678. I want to

  679. ask you,

  680. what is it

  681. that you

  682. fear that

  683. you don't

  684. believe God

  685. will bring

  686. you or

  687. do better

  688. in the

  689. gospel?

  690. Because God's

  691. word reveals

  692. that there is a

  693. reality in the

  694. gospel, the

  695. good news of

  696. Jesus, that

  697. what is

  698. immediately in

  699. front of you?

  700. And Jesus'

  701. word is so

  702. much better.

  703. God's

  704. word is so

  705. your child.

  706. Maybe you're

  707. finding hanging

  708. up the

  709. laundry is

  710. boring.

  711. Give some

  712. space to

  713. look outward.

  714. Because often

  715. what I think

  716. is I think

  717. the grass is

  718. greener

  719. elsewhere.

  720. Perhaps we

  721. need to

  722. actually look

  723. at the

  724. sailors for

  725. encouragement.

  726. Just like

  727. what Jonah did

  728. with the

  729. sailors.

  730. Are you

  731. sitting in a

  732. place where

  733. you can

  734. observe,

  735. experience,

  736. and reap

  737. how God

  738. is graciously

  739. transforming

  740. non-Christians

  741. for his

  742. glory?

  743. Join a

  744. ministry that

  745. involves people

  746. who are

  747. excited or

  748. keen to get

  749. stuck in the

  750. Bible to

  751. discover Jesus

  752. and see what

  753. God is doing

  754. at work.

  755. Because I'm

  756. convinced that

  757. God will use

  758. that to

  759. inspire and

  760. redeem what

  761. is boring or

  762. seemingly

  763. unfulfilling,

  764. and you'll

  765. see that good

  766. work for your

  767. boss, your

  768. colleagues.

  769. It's a

  770. winsome witness

  771. for Christ.

  772. You'll see that

  773. praying with your

  774. kids and reading

  775. them a Bible

  776. story every

  777. night and then

  778. tucking them

  779. to bed has a

  780. purpose for the

  781. king because you

  782. fear the

  783. gracious one.

  784. You revere that

  785. his name is

  786. great and to be

  787. made holy, and

  788. so you run to

  789. him.

  790. Storm or

  791. sunshine,

  792. grace is

  793. there.

  794. Cry out to

  795. the one who

  796. calms the

  797. seas with a

  798. word.

  799. Cry out to

  800. Jesus.

  801. Don't run

  802. from him.

  803. Run to him,

  804. the gracious

  805. king.

  806. Run to the

  807. arms that are

  808. held out on

  809. the cross and

  810. are held out

  811. for you.

  812. Friends, let's

  813. pray.

  814. Father God, we

  815. thank you so

  816. much that in

  817. Jesus, we

  818. see not only

  819. our sacrifice,

  820. but we see

  821. one who is

  822. present amidst

  823. us in the

  824. storm through

  825. his spirit.

  826. We ask that

  827. we might see

  828. that Jesus is

  829. the gracious

  830. one to turn

  831. to.

  832. He is our

  833. hiding place,

  834. both from the

  835. present turmoil

  836. or even the

  837. coming judgment.

  838. We ask that

  839. we might have

  840. a life

  841. transformed by

  842. the reality

  843. that we are

  844. to fear the

  845. gracious one.

  846. Amen.
