  1. A midlife crisis.

  2. A fabulous failure.

  3. Fear of where you're headed.

  4. ! Fear of where you're headed.

  5. A longing for change.

  6. Whether you're at home right now or you're in the room with me here,

  7. ! I know that at least once in your life already,

  8. you have felt the urge to turn your life around.

  9. Change your plans, your school, your jobs, your friendship group.

  10. You break the lease.

  11. You end a relationship.

  12. You upend your routines.

  13. You lock yourself out of your apps on your phone.

  14. Or you sell a guitar.

  15. Sometimes you can.

  16. Sometimes you must.

  17. Or you can't and you wish you could.

  18. Turn your life around.

  19. Have you ever said out loud,

  20. I have to turn my life around?

  21. At our best, we try and live a life that leads down the path that suits our needs,

  22. our joys, our comforts, even suits our loved ones.

  23. But the message of the Bible is that God needs to turn your life around so that you may truly live.

  24. Can God really do that?

  25. Can God turn your life around?

  26. And would it really matter if you did?

  27. My name is Nick.

  28. I'm a discipleship pastor here at St. Paul's.

  29. I'm really glad you're here.

  30. And I'm really glad that today we're in Jonah chapter 3.

    Jonah 3 chapter mention

  31. At the end of chapter 2, we land with Jonah on the beach.

  32. Spat out of a fish.

  33. Stinking of stomach.

  34. Squinting in the sun.

  35. Somehow still alive.

  36. God has relented from destroying him and saved him.

  37. So what should God have done next?

  38. Is he going to scold Jonah like an angry parent?

  39. Is he going to give him a new set of stricter rules to live by?

  40. Or is he going to put a pressure on him with a threat?

  41. That, ah, this is your last chance.

  42. No.

  43. Instead, Michelle just read that God renews his partnership with his prophet.

  44. Jonah got a clean slate as if he'd never run away at all.

  45. The book of Jonah could start chapter 3, verse 1.

  46. Jonah was tumbled in the water, taste tested by a fish, turned back to God and all by grace.

  47. God really can turn a life around in dramatic fashion.

  48. In chapter 3, God reset his expectations of Jonah.

  49. He still had to go to Nineveh and, like God says at the beginning of Jonah, preach against it for their wickedness.

  50. But this time, Jonah obeyed.

  51. What would Nineveh do in response to God's message?

  52. Would they ignore Jonah or would they turn to God and repent?

  53. Repent.

  54. To turn from living life your old way and to turn toward God is called repentance.

  55. Jonah 3 is going to show you Nineveh's response as an example of our need for repentance, the nature of repentance, and the hope of repentance.

  56. All people need to God.

  57. And if you turn to him, he will turn your life around.

  58. There is assurance available.

  59. Assurance for the repentant.

  60. Because God is gracious and merciful to all people.

  61. Now, there was a great need for repentance where Jonah was sent.

  62. I shared three weeks ago when we started the book of Jonah that Nineveh was known for its brutality.

  63. Even their allies were allies because they feared them.

  64. According to historians, there was even more going on here in Nineveh at the time.

  65. More going on than usual.

  66. There had been an ominous solar eclipse.

  67. There had been earthquakes.

  68. There had been political uprisings.

  69. And there was conflict everywhere between those under the thumb of royal rule and those wanting to break that thumb.

  70. Nineveh couldn't stay a superpower unless that changed.

  71. It was as if God had prepared the ground ready for Jonah's message to take root.

  72. Jonah walked for a whole day, as we've read.

  73. Whole day into this vast city.

  74. Still hadn't got to the middle of it.

  75. And he would have seen everywhere a desperate need for change.

  76. So as Jonah spoke, it only took five words in his language.

  77. Eight words in English.

  78. Eight words to convince people that they needed to turn their life around.

  79. Jonah proclaimed in verse 4,

  80. The Ninevites believed God.

  81. News of coming destruction led to belief in the God who had sent that message.

  82. There's no mention here of Jonah's preaching style.

  83. His hairdo.

  84. His teaching technique.

  85. His charisma.

  86. Maybe how he smelt.

  87. Or anything else that can make his message more listenable.

  88. Or more relatable.

  89. Or more fearfully obeyable.

  90. Instead, there's simply a heart response.

  91. A heart response to the word of God that led to belief.

  92. Nineveh's belief was not like belief light.

  93. It was weighty.

  94. It's the same Hebrew word for believed used when Israel saw the Red Sea crash down and drown Pharaoh's army.

  95. Then Israel believed.

  96. Same word.

  97. In God.

  98. On the evidence of God's deliverance.

  99. But this time, just God's few words bring belief.

  100. That word moved from the street into homes.

  101. From the lowly to the rich.

  102. From the peasant to the palace and all the way to the king.

  103. The king had riches.

  104. He had his reputation.

  105. And the protection of his army.

  106. But those same eight words broke his trust in his kingdom's strength.

  107. And he, too, believed.

  108. Nineveh had armies that annihilated entire peoples.

  109. Like whole cities off the face of the earth.

  110. They could have easily imagined how something like that would happen to them if there was a greater army out there.

  111. But here they fear something greater.

  112. They fear a God.

  113. Look at verse 8.

  114. Let everyone call urgently on God.

  115. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.

  116. When the king believed, he believed because he saw they, the whole nation and him, had a moral debt to God for their evil and their violence.

  117. And that debt had brought upon them a spiritual consequence.

  118. That of judgment.

  119. God's word hit bullseye in their heart.

  120. Did any of you hear Michelle read that passage this morning?

  121. Or have you ever read Jonah before and heard about Nineveh's belief?

  122. And think, what Jonah said, those eight words, why does that?

  123. How is that enough?

  124. How is that enough?

  125. Surely Jonah then went on a preaching tour and was on TV on the morning show and got to speak in the universities to all the intellectuals.

  126. No, just five words in Hebrew.

  127. How is that enough?

  128. How isn't it like Pharaoh, when Moses spoke to him,

  129. talked about God's coming judgment upon Egypt,

  130. unless they let God's people go?

  131. Pharaoh said no, over and over and over and over again.

  132. The answer is that it takes the power of God

  133. for our need of repentance to seem reasonable,

  134. beyond logic and circumstance.

  135. An early church leader called Paul talked about it like this.

  136. Opponents must be gently instructed

  137. in the hope that God will grant them repentance,

  138. leading them to a knowledge of the truth.

  139. Notice that God initiates repentance

  140. before we know we need it.

  141. Through his word,

  142. God powerfully leads us to a gift.

  143. A gift is seeing our need

  144. to return to him.

  145. Nineveh's believing king

  146. commanded

  147. that his people turn away

  148. from the Assyrian way of life,

  149. their evil ways

  150. and their violence

  151. is his summary of that.

  152. They are turning

  153. from their sin.

  154. Sin is anything done

  155. against God's will

  156. and order.

  157. God revealed to Nineveh

  158. through his word to them

  159. that their evil hearts

  160. and violent hands

  161. were sinful.

  162. Nineveh surrendered

  163. because God revealed

  164. their sin against him

  165. and that their judgment day

  166. was a month away.

  167. The nature of repentance

  168. is demonstrated here

  169. in what the king

  170. then led his people

  171. to do about their sin.

  172. First,

  173. he joined in

  174. with his people.

  175. Verse 6,

  176. when Jonah's warning

  177. reached the king of Nineveh,

  178. he rose from his throne,

  179. took off his royal robes,

  180. covered himself

  181. with sackcloth

  182. and sat down

  183. in the dust.

  184. The kings of Nineveh

  185. were often given

  186. these extra kingly titles.

  187. You think king

  188. might be the top

  189. but then there's

  190. king of the universe

  191. or king of the four corners

  192. of the world.

  193. But here,

  194. Nineveh's king

  195. stood down

  196. from his throne,

  197. removed all signs

  198. of his royalty

  199. and joined his nation

  200. mourning in the dust

  201. in awfully itchy sackcloth.

  202. It's such a humanizing moment.

  203. Imagine seeing that throne room

  204. empty,

  205. all the fancy clothes

  206. thrown on the floor

  207. and then going outside

  208. and seeing all the people

  209. together in the street.

  210. There was nobody

  211. in Nineveh

  212. more or less

  213. in need

  214. of repentance

  215. and no difference

  216. in the nature

  217. of their repentance.

  218. All people

  219. must repent

  220. the same

  221. by turning to the grace

  222. and mercy

  223. of God.

  224. Once the king

  225. had joined his people

  226. in the dust,

  227. he said,

  228. by the decree

  229. of the kings

  230. and nobles,

  231. do not let animals,

  232. herds or flocks

  233. taste anything.

  234. Do not let them

  235. eat or drink

  236. but let people

  237. and animals

  238. be covered in sackcloth.

  239. Let everyone

  240. call urgently on God.

  241. Let them give up

  242. their evil ways

  243. and their violence.

  244. The three things

  245. that they did,

  246. they're refusing

  247. food and water,

  248. they're mourning

  249. outwardly

  250. and their

  251. calling out

  252. to God

  253. reveal

  254. the nature

  255. of repentance.

  256. Their fasting

  257. created

  258. inner hunger

  259. and thirst.

  260. They replaced

  261. their inner

  262. evil

  263. with inner

  264. pains,

  265. refusing to

  266. fuel that

  267. evil within.

  268. Fasting

  269. shows their

  270. desire to

  271. turn away

  272. from their

  273. sinfulness.

  274. Their mourning

  275. in sackcloth

  276. and dust

  277. shows that

  278. they had

  279. surrendered

  280. their outward

  281. actions

  282. and comforts.

  283. They chose

  284. to cause

  285. external pains

  286. to themselves,

  287. bowing down

  288. their violent

  289. hands.

  290. And this

  291. shows their

  292. desire to

  293. turn away

  294. from their

  295. sinful ways.

  296. repentance.

  297. And then

  298. the king

  299. commanded

  300. prayer

  301. to direct

  302. their

  303. repentance.

  304. He commanded

  305. they pray

  306. urgently to

  307. God,

  308. that they

  309. call out

  310. to him

  311. with emotion

  312. and put

  313. into words

  314. what their

  315. fasting and

  316. mourning

  317. signified,

  318. their commitment

  319. to turn

  320. from their

  321. sin

  322. and to

  323. plead with

  324. God for

  325. mercy that

  326. he might

  327. relent.

  328. For,

  329. verse 9,

  330. who knows?

  331. God may

  332. yet relent

  333. and with

  334. compassion

  335. turn from

  336. his fierce

  337. anger so

  338. we will

  339. not perish.

  340. Nineveh's

  341. need

  342. for repentance

  343. came from

  344. a new

  345. belief in

  346. God

  347. and in

  348. his right

  349. judgment of

  350. them through

  351. his word.

  352. And the

  353. nature of

  354. their repentance

  355. was the same

  356. for all.

  357. It was a

  358. turning to

  359. God

  360. from their

  361. own way

  362. of life

  363. inwardly

  364. and outwardly

  365. expressed in

  366. prayer that

  367. was urgent,

  368. honest,

  369. exhaustive,

  370. pleading for

  371. mercy for

  372. their sin.

  373. Those eight

  374. words from

  375. Jonah had

  376. no hope.

  377. But the

  378. king had

  379. found hope

  380. in them

  381. that God

  382. might

  383. relent.

  384. But it's

  385. only a hope

  386. as strong

  387. as,

  388. who knows?

  389. But it

  390. was a

  391. hope in

  392. a merciful

  393. God.

  394. For here's

  395. how God

  396. received their

  397. repentance

  398. in verse

  399. 10.

  400. When God

  401. saw what

  402. they did

  403. and how

  404. they had

  405. turned from

  406. their evil

  407. ways,

  408. he relented

  409. and did not

  410. bring on

  411. them the

  412. destruction

  413. that he had

  414. threatened.

  415. God

  416. heard their

  417. cries,

  418. he saw

  419. them turn

  420. and he

  421. relented.

  422. God

  423. reveals his

  424. nature

  425. here.

  426. He is

  427. merciful.

  428. Nothing

  429. Nineveh had

  430. done had

  431. paid for

  432. their sin.

  433. When

  434. Nineveh

  435. turned to

  436. God,

  437. God

  438. turned

  439. toward

  440. them.

  441. The hope

  442. of repentance

  443. the king

  444. had found

  445. was in

  446. God's

  447. nature,

  448. not in

  449. the nature

  450. of his

  451. people's

  452. repentance.

  453. Let me

  454. explain that.

  455. None of

  456. the quality

  457. of their

  458. mourning,

  459. not the

  460. volume of

  461. their prayers,

  462. not how

  463. many days

  464. they'd

  465. fasted or

  466. what they'd

  467. fasted from,

  468. none of

  469. that gave

  470. the king

  471. hope.

  472. He already

  473. had it.

  474. The hope

  475. that the

  476. king has

  477. is described

  478. as compassion.

  479. Compassion,

  480. hope in

  481. the compassion

  482. of a

  483. God,

  484. even if it

  485. was just

  486. who knows

  487. kind of

  488. hope,

  489. because the

  490. king discovered

  491. hope in

  492. God's

  493. compassion

  494. because he

  495. warned

  496. them.

  497. The word

  498. came.

  499. Receiving

  500. the word

  501. in the

  502. first

  503. place,

  504. declared

  505. hope in

  506. the nature

  507. of the

  508. God who

  509. spoke this

  510. word,

  511. that he

  512. is merciful

  513. and

  514. compassionate.

  515. But God

  516. is also

  517. a just

  518. God.

  519. God can

  520. do anything,

  521. but being

  522. just,

  523. he will

  524. see

  525. justice

  526. done

  527. always.

  528. So,

  529. how

  530. was

  531. justice

  532. done

  533. in

  534. Jonah

  535. 3?

  536. How

  537. was

  538. Nineveh's

  539. sin

  540. paid

  541. for?

  542. If

  543. God

  544. is

  545. just,

  546. judgment

  547. must

  548. come.

  549. So how

  550. is it

  551. right and

  552. just for

  553. God to

  554. relent

  555. in

  556. verse

  557. 10?

  558. What

  559. took

  560. his

  561. anger

  562. away?

  563. There is

  564. a mystery

  565. in

  566. God's

  567. mercy.

  568. Nineveh

  569. received

  570. it

  571. without

  572. justice

  573. for

  574. judgment.

  575. Not

  576. seeing that

  577. justice

  578. done

  579. was

  580. Jonah's

  581. main

  582. problem.

  583. And

  584. without

  585. spoilers,

  586. I'm

  587. going to

  588. tell you,

  589. Jonah's

  590. response

  591. was what

  592. left

  593. God.

  594. Jonah

  595. was

  596. angry.

  597. Come

  598. next

  599. week to

  600. hear about

  601. what

  602. happens

  603. next.

  604. Jonah's

  605. problem

  606. with

  607. God

  608. should

  609. be

  610. our

  611. problem.

  612. We

  613. should

  614. want,

  615. long

  616. for

  617. someone

  618. to show

  619. up who's

  620. going to

  621. reveal how

  622. God's

  623. judgment in

  624. verse 10

  625. of chapter

  626. 3 is

  627. just.

  628. You

  629. should be

  630. hoping for

  631. a person

  632. who can

  633. show you

  634. how to

  635. turn and

  636. repent of

  637. your sin

  638. and

  639. who can

  640. give you

  641. assurance

  642. that your

  643. sin is

  644. truly

  645. dealt

  646. with.

  647. Without

  648. that person,

  649. you have a

  650. problem,

  651. I have a

  652. problem,

  653. and Jonah's

  654. got a

  655. legitimate

  656. problem.

  657. Otherwise,

  658. hope in

  659. God is

  660. at best.

  661. Who

  662. knows?

  663. It's a

  664. mystery.

  665. Well, I

  666. have good

  667. news for

  668. you and

  669. for

  670. Jonah.

  671. Crafted

  672. into

  673. Jonah 3,

  674. in the

  675. way that

  676. it's

  677. structured

  678. for us,

  679. is a

  680. longing

  681. for this

  682. person.

  683. There's a

  684. clue that

  685. unlocks the

  686. mystery.

  687. This chapter

  688. is bookended

  689. with God's

  690. judgment

  691. and his

  692. verdict,

  693. God's

  694. word and

  695. his

  696. relenting.

  697. Both are

  698. gracious.

  699. And we're

  700. meant to

  701. notice those

  702. two verses

  703. pull us into

  704. the center and

  705. look at what

  706. happens in the

  707. middle, which

  708. is the center

  709. verse in

  710. verse 6.

  711. Jonah's

  712. first readers

  713. were meant

  714. to yearn

  715. for someone

  716. yet to

  717. come, a

  718. king who

  719. would also

  720. come down

  721. from his

  722. throne, but

  723. give assurance

  724. to his

  725. repentant

  726. people.

  727. That person

  728. is the

  729. answer to

  730. the king

  731. of Nineveh's

  732. who knows.

  733. Philippians

  734. 2, 6

  735. to 8,

  736. we hear

  737. that Jesus

  738. was in

  739. very nature

  740. God.

  741. Jesus

  742. stepped

  743. down from

  744. his throne

  745. in heaven

  746. and took

  747. on the

  748. nature of

  749. the lowliest

  750. servant.

  751. He took

  752. off his

  753. robes and

  754. became a

  755. creature like

  756. us.

  757. He did

  758. not do

  759. this to

  760. join in

  761. with our

  762. repentance

  763. like Nineveh's

  764. king did,

  765. but to

  766. lead his

  767. people to

  768. belief in

  769. him.

  770. Find

  771. assurance

  772. in

  773. himself.

  774. He is

  775. the king

  776. who picks

  777. people up

  778. from the

  779. dust,

  780. out of the

  781. dirt of

  782. their fears

  783. and failures

  784. and their

  785. longings to

  786. turn their

  787. lives around.

  788. And he

  789. does not

  790. say,

  791. follow me

  792. and who

  793. knows,

  794. God might

  795. relent.

  796. No.

  797. Jesus is

  798. the king

  799. who says,

  800. follow me

  801. and I

  802. will bear

  803. your

  804. judgment

  805. for you.

  806. That is

  807. the kind of

  808. king I

  809. am.

  810. Listen to

  811. my words

  812. and believe

  813. in me.

  814. I will

  815. die

  816. your death

  817. that is

  818. promised

  819. and bear

  820. your sin

  821. and judgment

  822. so you

  823. may live.

  824. Jesus'

  825. death

  826. on the

  827. cross

  828. on behalf

  829. of those

  830. who repent

  831. and believe

  832. in God's

  833. word

  834. was the

  835. moment

  836. the wrath

  837. and fierce

  838. anger of

  839. God

  840. were poured

  841. out on

  842. the sinless

  843. king

  844. of

  845. sinners.

  846. Their sin

  847. was once

  848. for all

  849. paid

  850. for

  851. at the

  852. cross.

  853. Nineveh's

  854. trust in

  855. God's

  856. nature

  857. and belief

  858. in God

  859. meant that

  860. 800 years

  861. later

  862. Jesus

  863. died

  864. bearing

  865. Nineveh's

  866. judgment.

  867. God is

  868. just.

  869. God can

  870. forgive

  871. because

  872. Jesus

  873. drank

  874. down

  875. the

  876. cup

  877. of

  878. judgment

  879. even

  880. for

  881. the

  882. most

  883. lost

  884. and

  885. far

  886. off

  887. sinner.

  888. Jesus

  889. suffered

  890. to declare

  891. assurance

  892. to the

  893. repentant

  894. and as he

  895. hung

  896. on our

  897. cross

  898. Jesus

  899. received

  900. his own

  901. extra

  902. kingly

  903. title

  904. which

  905. was far

  906. greater

  907. than the

  908. Nineveh

  909. kings

  910. of old.

  911. A sign

  912. was nailed

  913. above

  914. Jesus'

  915. head

  916. written

  917. in all

  918. the

  919. common

  920. languages

  921. of the

  922. time

  923. the

  924. local

  925. language

  926. the

  927. old

  928. language

  929. of the

  930. empire

  931. and the

  932. new

  933. language

  934. of Rome

  935. for all

  936. people to

  937. read

  938. this is

  939. Jesus

  940. king

  941. of the

  942. Jews

  943. Jews

  944. was

  945. the

  946. name

  947. for the

  948. people

  949. of

  950. God

  951. but

  952. it's

  953. not

  954. just

  955. for

  956. Israel

  957. it's

  958. the

  959. name

  960. for

  961. anyone

  962. who

  963. follows

  964. him

  965. Jesus

  966. is

  967. the

  968. king

  969. who

  970. brings

  971. assurance

  972. to

  973. all

  974. sinners

  975. he

  976. is

  977. the

  978. king

  979. of

  980. God's

  981. people

  982. and

  983. the

  984. king

  985. of

  986. kings

  987. do

  988. you

  989. see

  990. your

  991. sin

  992. but

  993. have

  994. never

  995. turned

  996. to

  997. God

  998. you

  999. need

  1000. to

  1001. repent

  1002. do

  1003. it

  1004. urgently

  1005. wholeheartedly

  1006. !

  1007. truthfully

  1008. crying out

  1009. to God

  1010. for mercy

  1011. assured

  1012. that

  1013. because

  1014. of your

  1015. king

  1016. Jesus

  1017. there

  1018. is

  1019. forgiveness

  1020. that God

  1021. longs

  1022. to offer

  1023. to you

  1024. God

  1025. really

  1026. can

  1027. turn

  1028. your

  1029. life

  1030. around

  1031. do

  1032. you

  1033. follow

  1034. Jesus

  1035. but

  1036. you

  1037. haven't

  1038. turned

  1039. your

  1040. whole

  1041. life

  1042. toward

  1043. him

  1044. part

  1045. of you

  1046. has

  1047. turned

  1048. away

  1049. reflect

  1050. is

  1051. that

  1052. you

  1053. reflect

  1054. on what

  1055. that might

  1056. be

  1057. and then

  1058. repent

  1059. do it

  1060. urgently

  1061. wholeheartedly

  1062. honestly

  1063. crying out

  1064. to God

  1065. for mercy

  1066. assured

  1067. that

  1068. because of

  1069. your

  1070. king

  1071. Jesus

  1072. you

  1073. have

  1074. forgiveness

  1075. already

  1076. and a

  1077. relationship

  1078. with God

  1079. that is

  1080. safe

  1081. ask God

  1082. to help

  1083. turn your

  1084. life

  1085. around

  1086. to your

  1087. king

  1088. all of

  1089. it

  1090. and find

  1091. your sin

  1092. already

  1093. gone

  1094. and rejoice

  1095. God

  1096. can really

  1097. turn

  1098. every

  1099. life

  1100. around

  1101. God

  1102. turned

  1103. Jonah's

  1104. life

  1105. around

  1106. on a

  1107. beach

  1108. and sent

  1109. him to

  1110. Nineveh

  1111. our

  1112. prophet

  1113. King

  1114. Jesus

  1115. offers

  1116. to turn

  1117. your

  1118. life

  1119. around

  1120. and this

  1121. is the

  1122. king

  1123. King

  1124. Jesus

  1125. message

  1126. from the

  1127. first

  1128. church

  1129. to today

  1130. that we

  1131. carry into

  1132. the city

  1133. of Chatswood

  1134. that you

  1135. carry into

  1136. your

  1137. workplace

  1138. your

  1139. school

  1140. your

  1141. home

  1142. I have

  1143. declared

  1144. to both

  1145. Jews

  1146. and Greeks

  1147. that they

  1148. must turn

  1149. to God

  1150. in repentance

  1151. and have

  1152. faith

  1153. in our

  1154. Lord

  1155. Jesus

  1156. all

  1157. people

  1158. who know

  1159. God

  1160. or don't

  1161. yet know

  1162. him

  1163. must turn

  1164. and repent

  1165. and have

  1166. faith

  1167. in our

  1168. king

  1169. Jesus

  1170. Christ

  1171. your

  1172. king

  1173. calls you

  1174. to repent

  1175. so turn

  1176. pray

  1177. and find

  1178. him

  1179. willing

  1180. to lift

  1181. you

  1182. from

  1183. the

  1184. dust

  1185. and join

  1186. in

  1187. with the

  1188. mission

  1189. of your

  1190. king

  1191. he will

  1192. stand

  1193. with you

  1194. strengthening

  1195. you

  1196. with hands

  1197. that still

  1198. bear the

  1199. scars

  1200. from enduring

  1201. your judgment

  1202. for your

  1203. sin

  1204. and with

  1205. all God's

  1206. people

  1207. globally

  1208. who make

  1209. his message

  1210. their story

  1211. take it

  1212. with you

  1213. into your

  1214. city

  1215. every day

  1216. declare

  1217. the words

  1218. of your

  1219. king

  1220. that are

  1221. words

  1222. of life

  1223. that there

  1224. is hope

  1225. hope

  1226. with

  1227. assurance

  1228. that God

  1229. can turn

  1230. your life

  1231. around

  1232. and

  1233. you

  1234. see you

  1235. in

  1236. the

  1237. way
