  1. The nature and the timing of the second coming of Jesus has been a topic of concern for Christians for nearly 2,000 years.

  2. ! Many predictions have happened as well as well as it would happen.

  3. And the most recent prediction was from a South African pastor who claimed in June this year that the rapture, the coming of Jesus, would occur in this past week, if you were not aware, on the 23rd of September.

  4. Although there's been some confusion, it could have been any time between 23rd and 25th of September based on the different time zones and exactly when Jesus would land.

  5. Again, social media exploded.

  6. A thing called Rapture Talk is a corner of TikTok filled with videos of content where people are getting ready for the return of Jesus on the 23rd of September.

  7. A lot of the content is very practical in terms of tips, ensuring that the anticipation of the disappearance of Christians from the world would not leave a mess behind.

  8. Some were selling their cars, others their homes, others quitting jobs or, if not quitting jobs, applying for eternity leave from their employers.

  9. Others were stockpiling survival kits, leaving Bibles marked with key passages.

  10. Others were unlocking their mobile phones so that those left behind could, in fact, use their mobile phone.

  11. There was the inevitable ridicule as well.

  12. One person laments that the rapture, the timing of the rapture was one day before payday.

  13. And so therefore, a whole month of work for no pay.

  14. Others posted that it would make rent more affordable for those who were left behind.

  15. Some even pranked their Christian housemates by leaving piles of clothes randomly on the floor and hiding in the hope that their Christian friends would say,

  16. Oh no, we've missed out and we've got it all wrong.

  17. Now, I find that kind of cheeky.

  18. But I also know that this chapter tells us that for the Thessalonians, the thought of missing the coming of Jesus produced a whole heap of confusion, hysteria and discouragement.

  19. And so this topic, while there's stuff that I've chuckled at in this last week, is crucial.

  20. Quite a lot of ink has been spilled on these verses in 2 Thessalonians 2 over the past 200 years, especially, particularly with the rise of a theology called dispensationalism from the 1830s.

  21. This chapter, according to biblical scholars, is one of the most difficult of the entire New Testament to understand.

  22. And it's done my head in.

  23. And we need to be careful how we interpret it, how we understand it.

  24. And the key to understanding it is to focus on the bits that we know and are certain of, rather than the bits that we want to speculate on.

  25. The ones that we have particular questions of.

  26. And the ones that we think we've got solved.

  27. So it requires a great deal of humility and open hearts.

  28. So I've got three points.

  29. It's on the St. Paul's app as well.

  30. The problem of deception, the power of deception, and disempowering deception.

  31. So the problem, the first thing we can absolutely be certain of is that Paul is writing these verses here so the Thessalonians are not unsettled or alarmed by wrong thinking.

  32. That is, false teaching rocks faith.

  33. It diminishes hope.

  34. And when hope is diminished, Christian lives wander.

  35. There's a lack of purpose to it.

  36. So you see that in the second half of verse 1.

  37. The particular false teaching that has rocked them is in verse 1 concerning the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him.

  38. This, as I said, is a massive topic.

  39. And Paul has already written a bunch about it in 1 Thessalonians 1 and last week in 2 Thessalonians chapter 1.

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  40. Thessalonians says,

  41. That's why he's written.

  42. But for the Thessalonians, as we open up to Thessalonians 2, are their hopes dashed?

  43. You see, verse 3, the false teaching is that maybe they've missed it.

  44. Jesus has already come and they've missed it.

  45. And if they've missed the coming of Jesus, then what awaits them is what they already know of the coming.

  46. It's just purely condemnation by God on the day of judgment.

  47. And so it's no wonder their faith has been rocked.

  48. Deception destroys.

  49. It destroys.

  50. Deception is the act of getting others to believe what is true and valid,

  51. what is in actual fact false and invalid.

  52. Very few people would say that they are easily deceived.

  53. For the Thessalonians, their deception was that they had missed the coming of Jesus.

  54. Often our deception in the West is to so live for the moment that we don't look for the coming of Jesus.

  55. That's more likely our deception.

  56. And the problem is in both deceptions is they call us to take our eyes off eternal hope.

  57. And when that hope, that happens, we stop living for and with Jesus in the present.

  58. And Paul does not want them or us to be deceived.

  59. Verse 3, don't let anyone deceive you in any way.

  60. And so Paul writes this chapter, and in fact, his entire letters here to the Thessalonians,

  61. out of pastoral concern.

  62. He doesn't want hopes to be dashed.

  63. He doesn't want faith and love to be diminished in any way.

  64. And so his goal here in this chapter is not to predict the future.

  65. He wants to see gospel confidence.

  66. That's why these are written.

  67. Hope, faith and love is what's at stake.

  68. And so as we move into this chapter, we must not miss the forest for the trees,

  69. even if the tree is what we particularly want our attention to be attached to.

  70. So the power of deception.

  71. This brings us to the most confusing part of this chapter with all its questions and missing pieces.

  72. It's like we're trying to put a puzzle together without pieces.

  73. Paul says in verse 3 that they haven't missed the second coming Jesus,

  74. because that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed.

  75. And when it comes to the timing of Jesus' arrival, that's all we know.

  76. That's it.

  77. This is where it gets tricky.

  78. Who is the man of lawlessness?

  79. So many people in the Western world, particularly,

  80. their whole focus of this passage is to identify who the man of lawlessness is.

  81. Paul does not give us enough distinguishing features for us to point out the man of lawlessness in a police lineup.

  82. At all.

  83. For 1900 years, Christians have been diligently trying to find a contemporary in their world

  84. that leads us to think that that person there is the candidate.

  85. They fit the bill.

  86. They is the man of lawlessness.

  87. In our current day and age, there seems to be a temperature rising saying Donald Trump is the man of lawlessness.

  88. In the early days of when Paul wrote these, the prime candidate was the Roman emperor,

  89. and in particular, the emperor Caligula, who set up a statue of himself in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem

  90. and demanded that that statue of him be worshipped.

  91. Once upon a time, with the rise of Islam, Muhammad was the prime candidate.

  92. In the 16th and 17th century, Martin Luther identified the role of the pope, the papacy,

  93. as the man of lawlessness.

  94. They returned favour and said, no, actual fact, it was Martin Luther who's the man of lawlessness,

  95. other popular contenders throughout history, Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolf Hitler,

  96. and the list is virtually endless.

  97. Some scholars reading this actually say it's most likely not a person,

  98. it's more likely a movement.

  99. It could be an ideology, even an institution.

  100. The reality is, who knows?

  101. And every prediction has been wrong.

  102. Every prediction has been wrong, without exception.

  103. And verse 6 doesn't clear things up for us either.

  104. It tells us the man of lawlessness is currently being held back.

  105. Who's doing the restraining?

  106. Multiple answers to that question over the centuries.

  107. And to add confusion, the reference to holding back is in the present tense,

  108. suggesting the man of lawlessness, whoever that is,

  109. has been held back for 1,900 years since this was first written.

  110. That's an old person.

  111. Or is it multiple people?

  112. Or is it an institution or an ideology?

  113. It's also difficult to know what the temple is referring to in verse 4.

  114. Scholars have confused about this one.

  115. The temple in Jerusalem doesn't exist,

  116. and there is no reference at all for the temple being rebuilt

  117. in a physical form once it was actually destroyed.

  118. The New Testament says that the church and the individual Christian

  119. are both now the temple of God with the Holy Spirit.

  120. And so any reference to a future rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem

  121. is a misreading of Scripture.

  122. There are so many questions about the second coming,

  123. and yet we actually don't need to know the answers in order to have hope.

  124. Put it this way.

  125. Understand it.

  126. Let's wind history back.

  127. If I was an Israelite reading all the Old Testament prophecies

  128. about the coming of the future Messiah,

  129. that is what we know to be the first coming of Jesus,

  130. what would I conclude about the nature and the timing of his coming,

  131. about the identity of the Messiah?

  132. Would I have expected Jesus?

  133. No.

  134. The reality is that when he did arrive,

  135. the experts on the Messiah,

  136. the teachers of the law,

  137. did not even notice him.

  138. And for 30-odd years,

  139. they rejected him.

  140. He was not the one they thought the prophecies were predicting,

  141. and so we need to be careful.

  142. And make sure we focus on what we do know.

  143. So what do we do know?

  144. First of all,

  145. we know that the man of lawlessness is quintessentially lawless.

  146. Lawlessness is not the same as being a lawbreaker.

  147. There's a distinction here.

  148. The lawbreaker acknowledges the rightfulness of law,

  149. but fails to obey it fully.

  150. I acknowledge the goodness of speed limits,

  151. unless it gets in the way of me needing to be somewhere in a hurry.

  152. Lawlessness means without law.

  153. That is,

  154. there's no goodness in a speed limit at all.

  155. This lawless one specifically rejects the eternal,

  156. absolute law of God.

  157. They reject God being the determiner of right and wrong,

  158. and absolute truth.

  159. And so,

  160. therefore,

  161. the second thing we can be certain of is that they reject God.

  162. And this lawless one does not do it by arguing that God doesn't exist.

  163. They set themselves up as God to be worshipped.

  164. They deceive everyone to say,

  165. God does exist,

  166. but I am God.

  167. Thirdly,

  168. this lawless one will work real signs and wonders with great power,

  169. but all of it is in the service of a great lie.

  170. They are not false signs and wonders.

  171. They are real signs and wonders.

  172. He is empowered and driven by Satan,

  173. animated by Satan,

  174. serving Satan,

  175. accomplishing Satan's purposes.

  176. And this means,

  177. number four,

  178. that they will have,

  179. they'll be unparalleled in their ability to deceive.

  180. Because they'll be in the place of God,

  181. claiming to be God,

  182. showing the powers and wonders of God.

  183. Hence my picture on the screen.

  184. When you see that,

  185. you don't automatically imagine a man of lawlessness.

  186. You're not getting what you think you're getting.

  187. However,

  188. Paul carefully records in verse 10,

  189. that only those who are perishing will be deceived.

  190. Very crucially,

  191. the word perishing there

  192. is the same word Paul uses elsewhere in the New Testament

  193. to specifically describe those

  194. who reject the gospel of Christ.

  195. That's a very significant clue

  196. to the nature of the deceiving.

  197. The deceiver

  198. doesn't say the gospel doesn't exist.

  199. The deceiver gives you an alternative gospel,

  200. an alternative good news

  201. to cling your life to.

  202. The followers of lawlessness

  203. have failed to love the truth of Christ's gospel.

  204. Instead of loving truth,

  205. verse 12 literally says,

  206. they take pleasure

  207. in unrighteousness.

  208. And the final certainty that we can

  209. about the man of lawlessness

  210. is that they are going to be destroyed.

  211. He is quintessentially lawless,

  212. he opposes God

  213. and so condemned by the law of God,

  214. he opposes

  215. and is therefore doomed by God.

  216. Verse 8 tells us,

  217. the Lord Jesus will overthrow

  218. with the breath of his mouth

  219. and destroy by the splendor of his coming.

  220. Jesus will only need to exert

  221. as much effort as a mere breath

  222. to defeat the lawless one.

  223. And so what we can be certain of here

  224. is that whatever transpires in the future

  225. and is obvious from this text

  226. is that God is sovereign

  227. and he is all-powerful.

  228. And we can be absolutely certain

  229. that the man of lawlessness is not God.

  230. God has no equal.

  231. Whatever is in the future,

  232. God reigns

  233. and all his,

  234. the deceiving

  235. of the man of lawlessness

  236. is simply fulfilling

  237. God's plans and purposes.

  238. So to avoid deception,

  239. to avoid deception,

  240. we need to understand,

  241. we don't need to know

  242. the identity of the deceiver.

  243. We need to know

  244. how it is

  245. that they are deceiving.

  246. What's their playbook?

  247. How do they work?

  248. And verse 7

  249. is a crucial verse

  250. to help us understand.

  251. The secret power of lawlessness

  252. is already at work.

  253. We need to know

  254. that the secret of lawlessness,

  255. or if you like,

  256. the power of deception

  257. of the man of lawlessness

  258. is already at work right now

  259. and has been for 1900 years.

  260. We don't need to know

  261. the secret power of,

  262. sorry,

  263. we need to know

  264. the secret power of lawlessness,

  265. not the mystery

  266. of the secret identity

  267. of the powerful man of lawlessness.

  268. Before the man of lawlessness

  269. is revealed,

  270. lawlessness is operating secretly.

  271. The Greek word there,

  272. translated secret in verse 7,

  273. literally is mystery.

  274. The mystery of iniquity.

  275. The mystery of sin.

  276. The power.

  277. The secret power of sin.

  278. What is the mystery of sin

  279. that is in play now?

  280. Now?

  281. Now?

  282. Verse 4 is the key clue.

  283. He sets himself up

  284. in God's temple.

  285. Literally,

  286. quite literally

  287. in the original language,

  288. he takes his seat

  289. in the temple.

  290. Takes his seat in the temple.

  291. We could try and work out

  292. what temple he's talking about,

  293. but more and crucially,

  294. what we need to understand

  295. is how does the Bible

  296. understand the seat

  297. in the temple?

  298. What's he saying here?

  299. What's the nature

  300. of the secret power of lawlessness?

  301. Some have interpreted

  302. this as a man of lawlessness

  303. will be a great political leader.

  304. He will rebuild the temple

  305. in Jerusalem,

  306. and when that happens,

  307. Jesus will come back

  308. at some point.

  309. That's not the point of this.

  310. That is importing

  311. a theological framework

  312. that began in the 1830s

  313. into this passage.

  314. This here is talking

  315. about the role

  316. and the purpose

  317. of the temple.

  318. The temple

  319. was the place

  320. where God met

  321. with his people

  322. in the Old Testament times.

  323. The temple

  324. represents

  325. ultimate reality,

  326. and the man of lawlessness

  327. is putting themselves

  328. at the centre

  329. of the ultimate reality,

  330. that you must govern

  331. your life

  332. by this.

  333. In the centre

  334. of the temple,

  335. in Old Testament times

  336. for the Israelite,

  337. was something

  338. that revealed

  339. what was the centre

  340. of ultimate reality.

  341. The reality

  342. of both creation

  343. and redemption.

  344. What was it?

  345. Was it a statue?

  346. Was it an image

  347. of God?

  348. No,

  349. it was a piece

  350. of furniture

  351. that pointed

  352. to an event.

  353. It was,

  354. in fact,

  355. a wooden box

  356. at the centre

  357. of the temple

  358. called the Ark

  359. of the Covenant,

  360. and that Ark

  361. contained

  362. the two stone tablets

  363. inscribed

  364. with

  365. the Ten Commandments.

  366. We,

  367. two other things

  368. that pointed

  369. to God's goodness

  370. and God's power.

  371. And both,

  372. all of that there,

  373. this thing

  374. was the sacred object

  375. at the centre

  376. of the temple

  377. and the lid

  378. on top of the temple

  379. was a,

  380. on top of this Ark

  381. was a gold slab.

  382. And each year,

  383. once a year,

  384. on the Day of Atonement,

  385. the high priest

  386. would come

  387. into there

  388. on behalf

  389. of all Israelites.

  390. They would come

  391. into the Holy of Holies

  392. and they would

  393. sprinkle the blood

  394. of a sacrificed animal

  395. on the top

  396. of the Ark

  397. of the Covenant,

  398. on that slab

  399. for atonement

  400. for the sins

  401. of God's people.

  402. And that slab

  403. where the blood

  404. was sprinkled

  405. was called

  406. the mercy seat.

  407. It's very significant

  408. when it says

  409. he will take

  410. his seat.

  411. there is no

  412. other furniture,

  413. there's no

  414. other seats

  415. in the temple.

  416. There's only one

  417. seat in the temple

  418. and it is

  419. the mercy seat.

  420. And it's the place

  421. where God

  422. sat

  423. and dwelt

  424. with his people.

  425. And the slab

  426. there

  427. with the offering

  428. of blood,

  429. the condemnation

  430. of the law

  431. which the Ark

  432. of the Covenant

  433. held,

  434. with the offering

  435. of the blood,

  436. the condemnation

  437. of the law

  438. would be taken

  439. away

  440. and the violations

  441. of God's law

  442. were covered

  443. by the sprinkling

  444. of the blood.

  445. And so the mystery

  446. that God gave

  447. Israel

  448. in their temple

  449. is the exact same

  450. that he gives us

  451. now.

  452. It is the mystery

  453. which says

  454. that all life

  455. flows

  456. from this mystery.

  457. and it's the mystery

  458. that all life

  459. flows.

  460. My life

  461. for yours.

  462. All of creation

  463. and all of redemption

  464. is built

  465. on that mystery.

  466. It is my life

  467. for yours.

  468. That's the central

  469. mystery

  470. of all

  471. of reality.

  472. And the reality

  473. of lawlessness

  474. is the exact

  475. opposite.

  476. It is

  477. your life

  478. surrendered

  479. for me

  480. and that is

  481. the nature

  482. of the man

  483. of lawlessness.

  484. That is

  485. the mystery

  486. of sin.

  487. God's law

  488. says

  489. lay down

  490. your life

  491. for others.

  492. Sin says

  493. you lay down

  494. your life

  495. for me.

  496. The man

  497. of lawlessness

  498. will deceive

  499. for his own

  500. gain

  501. even though

  502. he knows

  503. he is destroyed

  504. and he will

  505. take

  506. everyone

  507. with him.

  508. The secret

  509. power of lawlessness

  510. is a philosophy

  511. an ideology

  512. a belief

  513. that goes

  514. right back

  515. to the very

  516. first act

  517. of rebellion

  518. against God

  519. in the

  520. Garden

  521. of Eden

  522. where God

  523. says

  524. I have

  525. given you

  526. all of

  527. this

  528. for your

  529. enjoyment

  530. but you

  531. must obey

  532. my word.

  533. This one

  534. word

  535. and Adam

  536. and Eve

  537. say no

  538. God's

  539. holding back

  540. from me.

  541. No no no

  542. he's holding

  543. back.

  544. They believe

  545. the lie

  546. of Satan

  547. that God

  548. is not

  549. good

  550. and for

  551. my

  552. fulfillment

  553. for my

  554. realization

  555. for my

  556. desire

  557. to know

  558. what's

  559. right

  560. and wrong

  561. and to

  562. be like

  563. God

  564. I must

  565. eat of

  566. the fruit

  567. and all

  568. destruction

  569. flows.

  570. And the

  571. destruction

  572. that flows

  573. the power

  574. of sin

  575. is that it

  576. sets people

  577. against one

  578. another

  579. it sets you

  580. against your

  581. very self

  582. it sets you

  583. against creation

  584. and it sets you

  585. against God

  586. himself.

  587. My

  588. life for

  589. yours

  590. is the

  591. central

  592. reality

  593. of the

  594. Godhead.

  595. It's the

  596. central reality

  597. of all

  598. of creation

  599. of the

  600. Jewish

  601. temple

  602. and the

  603. Christian

  604. faith.

  605. You see

  606. Jesus

  607. Christ

  608. at his

  609. first coming

  610. talked about

  611. the law

  612. and obeyed

  613. the law

  614. of God

  615. like no

  616. other

  617. human

  618. being.

  619. He didn't

  620. go away

  621. with the

  622. law.

  623. He made

  624. it very

  625. clear he

  626. didn't do

  627. away

  628. with the

  629. law.

  630. He upheld

  631. the demands

  632. of the

  633. law

  634. absolutely

  635. perfectly.

  636. Galatians

  637. 4.4

  638. and 5

  639. puts it

  640. like this

  641. God sent

  642. his son

  643. born of

  644. a woman

  645. born under

  646. the law

  647. to redeem

  648. those under

  649. the law

  650. that we

  651. might receive

  652. adoption to

  653. sonship.

  654. How did

  655. you do

  656. that?

  657. 2 Corinthians

  658. 5.21

  659. says that

  660. God made

  661. him who had

  662. no sin

  663. to be sin

  664. for us

  665. so that

  666. in him

  667. we might

  668. become the

  669. righteousness

  670. of God.

  671. What is

  672. the Christian

  673. faith?

  674. Jesus

  675. exchanged

  676. his life

  677. for ours.

  678. That's the

  679. central

  680. message of

  681. Christianity.

  682. It's the

  683. gospel.

  684. Jesus has

  685. satisfied the

  686. demands of

  687. the law

  688. of God.

  689. In Jesus

  690. we are

  691. forgiven,

  692. we are

  693. loved by

  694. God and

  695. that creates

  696. a love

  697. for every

  698. word that

  699. proceeds from

  700. the mouth

  701. of God.

  702. The secret

  703. power of

  704. lawlessness

  705. that is at

  706. display right

  707. now utterly

  708. hates God's

  709. word and it

  710. hates the

  711. gospel which is

  712. the central

  713. of God's

  714. word.

  715. And the

  716. great deception

  717. that's making

  718. a life,

  719. is to make

  720. the life of

  721. unrighteousness

  722. attractive.

  723. the great

  724. deception of

  725. lawlessness is

  726. to say you

  727. will not

  728. receive full

  729. complete

  730. fulfillment as

  731. an individual.

  732. In fact,

  733. it's restrictive

  734. in your life

  735. if you obey

  736. God's word.

  737. You need to

  738. reject that in

  739. order to live a

  740. full and

  741. wholesome life.

  742. You need to

  743. set yourself up

  744. as the ruler and

  745. determiner of your

  746. life.

  747. So how do

  748. we disempower

  749. that deception?

  750. The first

  751. step

  752. is to see

  753. that the

  754. principle of

  755. lawlessness

  756. is at work

  757. now.

  758. That's the

  759. first step.

  760. We cannot

  761. avoid what

  762. we do not

  763. see and

  764. acknowledge.

  765. everyone

  766. operates on

  767. the default

  768. principle of

  769. lawlessness.

  770. Our default

  771. position is

  772. it's your

  773. life for

  774. mine.

  775. You exist

  776. to serve

  777. me.

  778. You exist

  779. to affirm

  780. me.

  781. You exist

  782. to build

  783. me.

  784. All of us

  785. want to rule

  786. our own

  787. life, be

  788. masters of

  789. our own

  790. destiny and

  791. determiners of

  792. what is right

  793. and wrong.

  794. That's the

  795. nature of the

  796. very first

  797. sin of

  798. lawlessness

  799. in the

  800. garden of

  801. Eden.

  802. And all

  803. destruction in

  804. our life

  805. flows from

  806. it and

  807. yet we

  808. justify it

  809. consistently.

  810. The second

  811. step to

  812. disempowering

  813. deception is

  814. to do the

  815. same thing

  816. that overcomes

  817. the man of

  818. lawlessness

  819. here in

  820. verse 8.

  821. What is it

  822. that destroys

  823. the man of

  824. lawlessness?

  825. The splendour

  826. of his

  827. coming.

  828. I talked

  829. about this

  830. last week.

  831. It is the

  832. splendour.

  833. Not just

  834. his coming.

  835. It is the

  836. splendour of

  837. his coming.

  838. In other

  839. words, look

  840. to the

  841. splendour of

  842. Jesus Christ.

  843. He is

  844. better than

  845. any offer

  846. of righteousness.

  847. What he

  848. offers us

  849. in life,

  850. in life in

  851. him right

  852. now is

  853. fundamentally

  854. better than

  855. anything that

  856. we think that

  857. we could build

  858. for this world

  859. can offer.

  860. Look at the

  861. splendour of

  862. the mystery

  863. of God's

  864. grace to

  865. me, a

  866. sinner in

  867. Jesus Christ.

  868. Marvel at

  869. the gospel of

  870. Jesus Christ

  871. and all its

  872. implications.

  873. His life

  874. for mine.

  875. He died

  876. that I

  877. might live.

  878. Marvel at

  879. the gospel

  880. that declares

  881. that the

  882. Christian is

  883. because of

  884. Jesus Christ.

  885. They are

  886. loved by

  887. God.

  888. We are

  889. not

  890. lovable

  891. because of

  892. any of the

  893. lovability

  894. but because

  895. it was his

  896. initiative

  897. to choose

  898. to set

  899. his love

  900. for us

  901. in the

  902. person of

  903. Jesus Christ

  904. by Jesus

  905. giving his

  906. life for

  907. ours.

  908. And it's

  909. in that

  910. gospel of

  911. Jesus Christ

  912. the sprinkling

  913. the shedding

  914. of his

  915. blood that

  916. fulfills

  917. all the

  918. law of

  919. God.

  920. It's because

  921. of that and

  922. his act that

  923. we are

  924. declared to

  925. be his

  926. much-loved

  927. children.

  928. That in

  929. despite

  930. this is

  931. in fact

  932. that you

  933. are his

  934. much-loved

  935. children

  936. despite the

  937. ongoing

  938. presence that

  939. we have

  940. inside of

  941. us of

  942. lawlessness.

  943. Holy Spirit

  944. is sanctifying

  945. us through

  946. belief in

  947. that truth.

  948. To

  949. disempower the

  950. deceiver,

  951. to stand

  952. firm in

  953. the truth,

  954. to grow in

  955. confidence in

  956. the gospel

  957. and stable

  958. in life,

  959. verse 5

  960. calls us to

  961. hold fast to

  962. the teaching

  963. of God's

  964. word.

  965. 15 holds us

  966. to hold fast

  967. to the teaching

  968. of God's

  969. word.

  970. That is

  971. the only

  972. way to

  973. disempower

  974. deception

  975. and the key

  976. instrument to

  977. disempower

  978. deception is

  979. to marvel

  980. at the

  981. splendour

  982. of the

  983. gospel

  984. in God's

  985. word.

  986. God's

  987. word is

  988. the key

  989. instrument

  990. and it's

  991. unfortunate that

  992. this South

  993. African pastor

  994. chose to

  995. believe a

  996. dream

  997. and set

  998. his hopes

  999. on a

  1000. dream

  1001. rather than

  1002. the authority

  1003. of God's

  1004. word.

  1005. Because if

  1006. he did,

  1007. he would

  1008. know,

  1009. as we've

  1010. already seen,

  1011. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4:16

  1012. chapter 4

  1013. verses 16

  1014. and 17

  1015. are the

  1016. only verses

  1017. in the

  1018. entire Bible

  1019. that refers

  1020. in any

  1021. vague form

  1022. to this

  1023. idea of

  1024. a rapture

  1025. as it's

  1026. understood

  1027. in its

  1028. modern idea

  1029. by a

  1030. very small

  1031. group of

  1032. Christians.

  1033. A very

  1034. small group

  1035. of Christians.

  1036. It's a

  1037. recent

  1038. doctrine

  1039. out of

  1040. dispensationalism

  1041. that didn't

  1042. exist before

  1043. the 1800s.

  1044. And those

  1045. verses in

  1046. 1 Thessalonians

  1047. 4 are

  1048. about a

  1049. meeting of

  1050. Jesus and

  1051. his faithful

  1052. ones to

  1053. encourage them

  1054. because their

  1055. friends had

  1056. died.

  1057. And had

  1058. they missed

  1059. out,

  1060. they are

  1061. about the

  1062. dead in

  1063. Christ not

  1064. missing out,

  1065. so keep

  1066. living,

  1067. trusting God

  1068. now in

  1069. the gospel.

  1070. and in

  1071. 1 Thessalonians

  1072. 4 there

  1073. is no

  1074. further

  1075. information on

  1076. any direction

  1077. of travel once

  1078. that meeting

  1079. has happened.

  1080. there is no

  1081. evidence in

  1082. the scriptures

  1083. at all

  1084. if you're a

  1085. rapture talk

  1086. person

  1087. that you

  1088. then go

  1089. with him.

  1090. Nothing.

  1091. It's all

  1092. about the

  1093. meeting and

  1094. you're not

  1095. lost, you're

  1096. not forgotten.

  1097. Crucially

  1098. though, even

  1099. more crucially,

  1100. a few verses

  1101. later Paul

  1102. writes to

  1103. the

  1104. Thessalonians

  1105. and

  1106. emphasises

  1107. something that

  1108. Jesus has

  1109. already said.

  1110. He will

  1111. come back

  1112. like a

  1113. thief in

  1114. the night

  1115. and we

  1116. do not

  1117. know the

  1118. time or

  1119. the dates

  1120. and that

  1121. even Jesus

  1122. does not

  1123. know the

  1124. time or

  1125. the dates.

  1126. And so

  1127. if you

  1128. have a

  1129. dream,

  1130. even a

  1131. vivid

  1132. dream of

  1133. Jesus telling

  1134. you the

  1135. date of

  1136. his return,

  1137. you are

  1138. being

  1139. deceived.

  1140. Because

  1141. Jesus

  1142. already said

  1143. in his

  1144. word, I

  1145. don't know

  1146. the time

  1147. and the

  1148. dates.

  1149. How can

  1150. he tell

  1151. you what

  1152. he does

  1153. not know

  1154. himself?

  1155. It will

  1156. just happen

  1157. when the

  1158. father tells

  1159. him to do

  1160. it now.

  1161. So to

  1162. live with

  1163. confident

  1164. hope,

  1165. hope, and

  1166. I feel

  1167. for those

  1168. who have

  1169. been brought

  1170. into this

  1171. latest lie

  1172. of deception,

  1173. to live

  1174. with confident

  1175. hope so

  1176. that we

  1177. grow in

  1178. trust of

  1179. God and

  1180. love for

  1181. all people,

  1182. we need

  1183. to know

  1184. our

  1185. Bible.

  1186. And with

  1187. the gospel

  1188. of the

  1189. Lord Jesus

  1190. is the

  1191. central

  1192. interpreting

  1193. principle

  1194. of it.

  1195. Paul's

  1196. desire,

  1197. his whole

  1198. plan, is

  1199. for you to

  1200. grow

  1201. confidently

  1202. in the

  1203. gospel.

  1204. And that

  1205. is our

  1206. desire here.

  1207. In

  1208. 1987, a

  1209. pilot was

  1210. flying an

  1211. empty plane

  1212. in the

  1213. US when

  1214. he heard a

  1215. noise at

  1216. the back

  1217. of the

  1218. plane.

  1219. So he

  1220. left a

  1221. co-pilot

  1222. to fly the

  1223. plane while

  1224. he went

  1225. and investigated

  1226. he discovered

  1227. a door that

  1228. would have

  1229. been sort

  1230. of left

  1231. ajar.

  1232. While

  1233. trying to

  1234. close the

  1235. door, he

  1236. fell out.

  1237. And so

  1238. the co-pilot

  1239. saw what

  1240. happened,

  1241. radioed

  1242. Coast Guard,

  1243. said, hey,

  1244. search area,

  1245. pilot's fallen

  1246. out over the

  1247. Atlantic Ocean.

  1248. And when

  1249. the plane,

  1250. which made

  1251. an emergency

  1252. landing,

  1253. when it

  1254. landed,

  1255. the emergency

  1256. service discovered

  1257. that the

  1258. pilot was

  1259. hanging on

  1260. to the

  1261. railing of

  1262. the stairs.

  1263. emergency

  1264. service said

  1265. he was

  1266. hanging on

  1267. so tight

  1268. they literally,

  1269. he did not

  1270. let go

  1271. when he

  1272. landed.

  1273. They literally

  1274. had to peel

  1275. his hands

  1276. off those

  1277. steps by

  1278. extreme

  1279. force

  1280. because he

  1281. would not

  1282. let go.

  1283. do not

  1284. be deceived

  1285. now or

  1286. in the

  1287. future.

  1288. Hold

  1289. tight,

  1290. so tight

  1291. to God's

  1292. word with

  1293. the gospel

  1294. of the

  1295. Lord Jesus

  1296. as its

  1297. centre and

  1298. its focus.

  1299. That is

  1300. how we

  1301. stand firm

  1302. with hope

  1303. and grow

  1304. in faith

  1305. and love

  1306. in the

  1307. face of

  1308. lawlessness.

  1309. each.

  1310. Stop

  1311. Thank you.
