  1. Well, good morning, everyone. Welcome to church this morning. My name is Steve. I've not met you before. Lead pastor here at St. Paul's. I'd be grateful if you had your Bibles open at that point at Matthew 1.

  2. As we enter into this Christmas season, a season of presents and joy and Christmas pageants. In fact, I read the story this past week of a boy who was desperate to play Joseph in the Sunday school pageant for his church.

  3. And he sort of planned for it. I think he'd been working on it for a little bit and he figured he was the prime candidate to be Joseph.

  4. But instead, the head of the Sunday school cast him as the landlord of the inn in Bethlehem, you know, with one line. That's it.

  5. And so this, you know, poor boy was just so, so disappointed. He protested, you know, the fact that he had this role and he should in fact be Joseph.

  6. But to no avail, he was stuck being the landlord of the inn. And all, he was really disappointed, but he really didn't let it show too much due to all the rehearsals.

  7. So, you know, when it came time for his little bit, he would say his famous line, you know, with a bunch of enthusiasm.

  8. No, there is no room in the inn for him.

  9. However, on the day of the Christmas pageant, he got his revenge.

  10. So, packed house. And when it got to his moment in the spotlight, Mary and Joseph, you know, knocked on the door, asked if there was any room.

  11. And the boy smiled and said, yes, we have lots of room in the inn tonight.

  12. And apparently, it was just pause.

  13. You know, everyone was just silent.

  14. The Sunday school, you know, director was all like, big gasp in the room.

  15. Everyone was shocked.

  16. And then awkward silence until all of a sudden the audience erupted.

  17. We laughed because Mary and Joseph, look around, what do we do now?

  18. Anyway, I suppose if you want to, if you're a male and you want to party at a Christmas pageant,

  19. you know, Joseph is the guy who, on one level, has more of a spotlight on him than anyone else.

  20. Even though, on the most part, he's sort of sitting there in the background.

  21. He doesn't say too many things at all.

  22. Although, he is at the centre of the action.

  23. What is a bit unusual, though, is that in the biblical text, we see a slightly different picture.

  24. And it is a little bit odd, if you like, that in a patriarchal society like first century Palestine,

  25. Joseph, on the most part, plays a passive role in all the biblical narratives and the Christmas narrative in particular.

  26. In fact, once we are clear of the Christmas scenes, Joseph is hardly mentioned at all in the New Testament.

  27. And yet, an angel did come to Joseph and told Joseph something that, in fact, only Joseph was told this.

  28. Only Joseph.

  29. And that is because Joseph, as the male, had naming rights to the child.

  30. And the angel said, verse 23, the child is to be called Emmanuel, God with us.

  31. And so, here's what we learn from the name Emmanuel.

  32. Well, three things, it's on the St. Paul's app, which you can download, if you haven't got it.

  33. But on the St. Paul's app, Jesus is God, Jesus is human, and Jesus is with us.

  34. And that's our trajectory today.

  35. So, first thing we learn is that Jesus is God.

  36. In verse 20, the angel tells Joseph that the human life growing inside of Mary has come not from any human being,

  37. but from God, from the Heavenly Father.

  38. And Joseph will be Jesus' father, if you like, in a secondary sense.

  39. That is, God is the real father of this child.

  40. However, the most direct statement of Jesus' identity comes in that verse 23.

  41. And in that, Matthew is quoting, himself a Jew, is quoting from Isaiah chapter 7, verse 14.

    Isaiah 7:14

  42. The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Emmanuel, which means God with us.

  43. Now, for centuries leading up to this moment, ever since Isaiah wrote those words,

  44. that Jewish scholars had known about it, but they had never thought to take those words literally.

  45. And so, what is promised here in Matthew 1, what is declared here, is greater than anyone would imagine,

  46. even for Jewish scholars.

  47. Jesus Christ, this baby in this manger, is God with us.

  48. And that statement is absolutely startling for the Jewish worldview.

  49. In fact, for any worldview.

  50. Eastern religions believed God was an impersonal, infinite force,

  51. which permeated all things in the created order.

  52. It wasn't unusual for Eastern religions, and still isn't today,

  53. to regard some human beings as being particularly great manifestations of the divine,

  54. such as Buddha, a manifestation of the divine.

  55. Western religions, on the other hand,

  56. and believes that gods could disguise themselves as human beings for their own purposes.

  57. And so, they believed in a personal God on one level.

  58. And therefore, a personal God in the Western religion could appear to a degree,

  59. in some form, momentarily, amongst human life.

  60. And so, there is references throughout Greek religions in the past,

  61. the Greek history, that this particular person was a manifestation,

  62. or potentially, it was Zeus amongst us for just this moment.

  63. Jews, on the other hand, were neither Eastern or Western,

  64. but they believed that God was both personal and infinite.

  65. God was not a being within the universe,

  66. but was that God was outside of the universe and the source of the universe.

  67. And so, the Hebrew worldview was, in fact, against the idea

  68. that a human being, in any way, could be God.

  69. In fact, Jews would not even use the name of God.

  70. They still don't to this day.

  71. Won't even spell it.

  72. And yet, Jesus Christ, by a Jew, by his life, by his claims,

  73. by his resurrection, managed to convince his closest Jewish followers

  74. that he was much more than a prophet telling them about God,

  75. how to find God,

  76. but that he was, in fact, God himself,

  77. come to find us.

  78. He blew the categories of Eastern, Western, and Jewish worldview.

  79. And, in fact, all of his main Jewish followers

  80. declared it in his lifetime.

  81. And, of course, the opinions of these authors

  82. would not mean a whole lot at all

  83. if Jesus hadn't declared himself his divine identity

  84. all through the biographical accounts,

  85. which is what sets Jesus apart from the likes of Buddha.

  86. Buddha never declared that he himself,

  87. even though characteristics of the divine

  88. never declared himself to be divine,

  89. whereas Jesus did.

  90. And what we have with Jesus

  91. is his constantly forgiving sin,

  92. which the Jews knew that only God could do,

  93. and he also claims,

  94. I'm going to come back and I'm going to judge the earth,

  95. and they also knew that only God could do that.

  96. And so, at many times and in various ways,

  97. Jesus Christ, a Jewish man,

  98. declared to his Jewish audience,

  99. I am God.

  100. And thousands, thousands believed him

  101. and came to worship him as God.

  102. Acts chapter 2, verse 41.

    Acts 2:41

  103. And so, every Christmas,

  104. people all over the world give lip service

  105. to that reality without actually thinking through

  106. what the implications are for it.

  107. What does it mean?

  108. We've just sung it just then.

  109. What does it mean?

  110. If Jesus really is God,

  111. what does it actually mean for us practically?

  112. So, first, it's an intellectual turning point.

  113. Now, some have argued that the supreme miracle

  114. of Christianity is not the resurrection of Jesus,

  115. but the incarnation of Jesus,

  116. the coming of God into his world as a human being.

  117. So, the late theologian J.I. Packer puts it like this,

  118. God became man, the divine son became a Jew,

  119. the almighty appeared on earth as a helpless human baby,

  120. unable to do more than just lie and stare

  121. and wriggle and make noises,

  122. needing to be fed and changed and taught to talk

  123. like any other child.

  124. The more you think about it,

  125. the more staggering it gets.

  126. Nothing in fiction is so fantastic as this.

  127. The only way that we can know God

  128. is as if God comes and writes himself

  129. into the story of history

  130. so that the rest of us,

  131. the characters of history,

  132. could know the author of the story.

  133. The claim of Christmas,

  134. the claim of Christianity,

  135. is that God is not the author of history,

  136. but he's also written himself

  137. into the storyline of history

  138. so that we might know the unknowable.

  139. And so, the claim that Jesus is God

  140. is an intellectual turning point,

  141. but it also causes a personal crisis.

  142. You see, whenever you see Jesus

  143. acting in the Gospels,

  144. what he does is he evokes

  145. extreme responses from people.

  146. People are so furious with him at points

  147. that they want to throw him off a cliff.

  148. They plot to kill him.

  149. Others are so terrified by his presence,

  150. they tell him to depart,

  151. get away from me.

  152. Others fall down before him

  153. and worship him as God.

  154. What you have here with Jesus

  155. is extreme reactions recorded.

  156. And those extreme reactions

  157. are not because of the good things he does.

  158. Like telling people to love their neighbour

  159. as you might love yourself.

  160. Those extreme reactions are always

  161. because of who he claims to be.

  162. He claims to be the God

  163. who created all things,

  164. the source of all life,

  165. the one who defines all reality.

  166. And if he is,

  167. then what that means is

  168. it's all about him.

  169. And it means that our lives,

  170. as he is our creator,

  171. are defined by him

  172. and our life must be centred on him.

  173. However, if Jesus is not who he says he is,

  174. if he's not God,

  175. then he's not someone to be admired at all

  176. in any way.

  177. He is someone to be hated.

  178. He is someone to run away from,

  179. to escape,

  180. because he is the greatest fraud in history

  181. and he is extremely dangerous for your life.

  182. What we see in the Gospels

  183. on the claim of who Jesus is

  184. is not this passive middle area

  185. where we can just admire the guy.

  186. That category does not exist.

  187. He is either God or he isn't.

  188. He's either crazy and dangerous

  189. or he is infinitely wonderful to be worshipped.

  190. That's the only two responses.

  191. And it's a personal crisis for us all.

  192. But,

  193. thirdly,

  194. the claim that Jesus is God

  195. gives us the greatest possible hope.

  196. You see,

  197. the one who creates,

  198. the one who determines,

  199. the one who defines all reality

  200. says that our world

  201. is not all that there is.

  202. That there are a life

  203. and there is love

  204. after death

  205. and that evil and suffering

  206. will one day end.

  207. And that is the hope

  208. that we need

  209. in 2025.

  210. Hope in a world

  211. with all its unending problems

  212. and hope for you and me

  213. with all our unending failings.

  214. That's what makes

  215. Christianity so unique

  216. and it's what makes

  217. the biblical accounts of Jesus

  218. and what he says

  219. so crucial

  220. that we do not redefine it.

  221. That we make God

  222. something different

  223. in our minds

  224. and in our hearts.

  225. You see,

  226. a God who was,

  227. a God who's just perfect,

  228. a God who's just

  229. all about justice,

  230. a God who's gonna

  231. smite evil

  232. and make everything right

  233. that's wrong.

  234. You know,

  235. the God who is

  236. a hard taskmaster

  237. would not have come down to us

  238. this God would not have arrived.

  239. He would have simply demanded

  240. that we pull ourselves together,

  241. do a bunch of moral good,

  242. obey a bunch of laws

  243. and earn the right

  244. to be loved by him.

  245. On the other hand,

  246. a God

  247. that was

  248. an all accepting,

  249. God of all accepting love

  250. would not have come down

  251. to us either.

  252. Would never have arrived.

  253. You know,

  254. the God of the modern

  255. Western imagination

  256. would have just,

  257. there's no point of him

  258. coming into his world

  259. because he's just gonna

  260. overlook every sin

  261. and every wrong

  262. and every evil

  263. and just embrace us

  264. for who we are

  265. and just let us

  266. do our thing.

  267. Neither of those gods

  268. would have bothered

  269. with Christmas.

  270. The biblical God,

  271. however,

  272. is infinitely good

  273. and perfect

  274. and so our sin

  275. could not just be

  276. shrugged off

  277. as if it doesn't matter

  278. but he's also

  279. infinitely loving

  280. and he knows

  281. that we could never

  282. ever climb up

  283. to him.

  284. We could never be good enough

  285. to get to him

  286. and so he had to come to us.

  287. God had to come down

  288. and do what we cannot do

  289. and so Christmas

  290. is full of hope

  291. for us.

  292. The second thing we see here

  293. that Jesus is human.

  294. This interaction

  295. between Joseph

  296. and the angel

  297. reveals the humanity

  298. of Jesus

  299. and what difference

  300. does that make

  301. in the way that we live?

  302. Let me just quote Packer

  303. again on this one.

  304. For the Son of God

  305. to empty himself

  306. and become poor

  307. meant a laying aside

  308. of glory,

  309. a voluntary restraint

  310. of power,

  311. an acceptance

  312. of hardship,

  313. isolation,

  314. ill treatment,

  315. malice

  316. and misunderstanding.

  317. Finally,

  318. a death

  319. that involves

  320. such agony,

  321. spiritual

  322. even more than physical

  323. that his mind

  324. nearly broke

  325. under the prospect

  326. of it.

  327. It meant love

  328. to the utmost

  329. for unlovely people.

  330. And so,

  331. the Christmas spirit

  332. does not shine out

  333. in the Christian snob.

  334. For the Christmas spirit

  335. is a spirit

  336. of those

  337. who like their master

  338. live their whole lives

  339. on the principle

  340. of making themselves poor,

  341. spending

  342. and being spent

  343. to enrich

  344. their fellow humans

  345. giving time,

  346. trouble,

  347. care

  348. and concern

  349. to do good

  350. to others

  351. and not just

  352. their own friends

  353. in whatever way

  354. there seems need.

  355. You see,

  356. the fact that

  357. God

  358. became human

  359. and emptied

  360. himself

  361. of his glory

  362. means

  363. that we should

  364. not want

  365. to hang out

  366. just with people

  367. who are going

  368. to enrich us

  369. and advance us

  370. in some way.

  371. People who are

  372. just going to

  373. open the doors

  374. for us.

  375. We need

  376. to be willing

  377. to go

  378. to the

  379. people

  380. without the power,

  381. without the beauty,

  382. without the money

  383. all because

  384. God

  385. became

  386. one

  387. of us.

  388. And the fact

  389. that

  390. he became

  391. one of us

  392. human

  393. it means

  394. that

  395. there's

  396. infinite

  397. comfort

  398. in our

  399. suffering

  400. right now.

  401. Hebrews

    Hebrews 2:17

  402. chapter 2

  403. verse 17

  404. says that

  405. Jesus

  406. made like us

  407. fully human

  408. in every way

  409. and the very

  410. next verse

  411. tells us

  412. what that

  413. means for us

  414. because he

  415. himself

  416. suffered

  417. when he

  418. was

  419. tried

  420. and tested

  421. he is

  422. able

  423. to help

  424. those

  425. who are

  426. being

  427. tried

  428. and

  429. tested.

  430. You see

  431. when something

  432. bad happens

  433. and real

  434. suffering

  435. comes to

  436. us

  437. one of

  438. the

  439. consequences

  440. of

  441. suffering

  442. in our

  443. world

  444. is this

  445. a deep

  446. sense of

  447. loneliness

  448. that comes

  449. with it.

  450. You know

  451. as if I'm

  452. walking this

  453. myself

  454. no one's

  455. been on this

  456. journey

  457. the way

  458. that I've

  459. been on

  460. this

  461. journey

  462. and what

  463. happens

  464. in the

  465. midst

  466. of

  467. suffering

  468. is that

  469. people

  470. around us

  471. express

  472. some

  473. level of

  474. sympathy

  475. but deep

  476. down

  477. it doesn't

  478. seem to

  479. help a

  480. lot.

  481. it's

  482. great to

  483. know that

  484. people are

  485. there and

  486. they're

  487. acknowledging

  488. your pain

  489. but it

  490. doesn't

  491. seem to

  492. help a

  493. lot

  494. but then

  495. we meet

  496. someone

  497. who's been

  498. through a

  499. similar thing

  500. that we've

  501. been through

  502. and we

  503. pour our

  504. heart out

  505. to that

  506. person

  507. and they

  508. listen

  509. they

  510. listen

  511. there's a

  512. connection

  513. and we

  514. start to

  515. listen to

  516. their

  517. opinions

  518. because

  519. they've

  520. been

  521. through

  522. the

  523. same

  524. thing

  525. it's

  526. like

  527. you

  528. journey

  529. with

  530. them

  531. in

  532. that

  533. moment

  534. the

  535. coming

  536. of

  537. God

  538. into

  539. this

  540. world

  541. ultimately

  542. means

  543. that

  544. he

  545. suffered

  546. and

  547. that

  548. he

  549. in

  550. fact

  551. triumphed

  552. through

  553. suffering

  554. and

  555. therefore

  556. he

  557. has

  558. infinite

  559. power

  560. to

  561. comfort

  562. the

  563. sufferer

  564. this

  565. God

  566. is

  567. unlike

  568. the

  569. God

  570. of

  571. any

  572. other

  573. faith

  574. in

  575. this

  576. world

  577. so

  578. have

  579. you

  580. been

  581. betrayed

  582. do you

  583. feel

  584. abandoned

  585. and

  586. lonely

  587. have

  588. you

  589. been

  590. destitute

  591. facing

  592. death

  593. even

  594. so

  595. has

  596. he

  597. he's

  598. been

  599. through

  600. it

  601. all

  602. Jesus

  603. has

  604. been

  605. all

  606. the

  607. places

  608. that

  609. you

  610. are

  611. right

  612. now

  613. including

  614. mental

  615. health

  616. his

  617. mind

  618. nearly

  619. broke

  620. in the

  621. garden of

  622. Gethsemane

  623. he's

  624. been

  625. in

  626. the

  627. darkness

  628. that

  629. you

  630. are

  631. now

  632. and

  633. much

  634. more

  635. he

  636. has

  637. suffered

  638. and

  639. he

  640. has

  641. the

  642. power

  643. to

  644. comfort

  645. he

  646. has

  647. the

  648. power

  649. to

  650. strengthen

  651. and

  652. he

  653. has

  654. the

  655. power

  656. to

  657. bring

  658. you

  659. through

  660. it

  661. because

  662. thirdly

  663. he's

  664. with

  665. us

  666. not

  667. just

  668. momentarily

  669. but

  670. he

  671. is

  672. with

  673. us

  674. you

  675. see

  676. God's

  677. plans

  678. were

  679. infinitely

  680. greater

  681. than

  682. a

  683. short

  684. visit

  685. gifting

  686. us

  687. with a

  688. good

  689. example

  690. of how

  691. to live

  692. life

  693. and

  694. a

  695. bunch

  696. of

  697. helpful

  698. teaching

  699. his

  700. plan

  701. in

  702. becoming

  703. human

  704. was

  705. to

  706. always

  707. be

  708. human

  709. and

  710. to

  711. always

  712. be

  713. with

  714. us

  715. Jesus

  716. chose

  717. a

  718. 12

  719. apostles

  720. disciples

  721. initially

  722. and

  723. appointed

  724. them

  725. so that

  726. they

  727. would

  728. be

  729. with

  730. him

  731. chosen

  732. to be

  733. in

  734. his

  735. presence

  736. conversing

  737. with

  738. him

  739. learning

  740. from

  741. him

  742. having

  743. his

  744. comfort

  745. moment

  746. by

  747. moment

  748. you

  749. see

  750. in

  751. Jesus

  752. the

  753. unapproachable

  754. God

  755. becomes

  756. a

  757. human

  758. being

  759. who

  760. can

  761. be

  762. known

  763. and

  764. loved

  765. and

  766. frankly

  767. that

  768. reality

  769. does not

  770. stun us

  771. as much

  772. as it

  773. should

  774. moment

  775. by

  776. moment

  777. you see

  778. in the

  779. Old

  780. Testament

  781. God

  782. appears

  783. to

  784. Abraham

  785. as a

  786. smoking

  787. furnace

  788. to

  789. Israel

  790. his

  791. people

  792. as a

  793. pillar

  794. of

  795. fire

  796. to

  797. Job

  798. as a

  799. hurricane

  800. and

  801. when

  802. Moses

  803. asked

  804. to

  805. see

  806. the

  807. face

  808. of

  809. God

  810. he

  811. was

  812. told

  813. if

  814. I

  815. showed

  816. myself

  817. to

  818. you

  819. it

  820. would

  821. kill

  822. you

  823. so

  824. great

  825. and

  826. high

  827. and

  828. holy

  829. is

  830. and

  831. unproachable

  832. is

  833. God

  834. and

  835. yet

  836. the

  837. message

  838. of

  839. Christmas

  840. means

  841. that

  842. through

  843. Jesus

  844. you

  845. can

  846. see

  847. God

  848. you

  849. can

  850. meet

  851. God

  852. you

  853. can

  854. know

  855. him

  856. personally

  857. without

  858. any

  859. terror

  860. at

  861. all

  862. when

  863. God

  864. showed

  865. up

  866. in

  867. Jesus

  868. Christ

  869. he

  870. was

  871. a

  872. baby

  873. this

  874. time

  875. he

  876. came

  877. not

  878. to

  879. bring

  880. judgment

  881. but

  882. in

  883. fact

  884. to

  885. bear

  886. judgment

  887. to

  888. pay

  889. the

  890. penalty

  891. for

  892. our

  893. sin

  894. to

  895. take

  896. away

  897. the

  898. barrier

  899. between

  900. humanity

  901. and

  902. God

  903. so

  904. that

  905. when

  906. humanity

  907. faced

  908. God

  909. if

  910. that

  911. barrier

  912. stayed

  913. we

  914. would

  915. be

  916. obliterated

  917. Jesus

  918. is

  919. God

  920. with

  921. us

  922. and

  923. so

  924. I

  925. ask

  926. you

  927. are

  928. you

  929. really

  930. with

  931. him

  932. do

  933. you

  934. know

  935. him

  936. or

  937. just

  938. about

  939. him

  940. !

  941. God

  942. there

  943. is

  944. one

  945. crucial

  946. trait

  947. necessary

  948. for

  949. having

  950. a

  951. personal

  952. relationship

  953. with

  954. Jesus

  955. one

  956. crucial

  957. trait

  958. and

  959. in

  960. actual

  961. fact

  962. it's

  963. probably

  964. the

  965. trait

  966. that

  967. is

  968. most

  969. overlooked

  970. an

  971. intimate

  972. relationship

  973. with

  974. Jesus

  975. always

  976. requires

  977. courage

  978. courage

  979. we

  980. cannot

  981. know

  982. Jesus

  983. personally

  984. as

  985. I've

  986. just

  987. outlined

  988. it

  989. here

  990. unless

  991. we

  992. have

  993. the

  994. courage

  995. to

  996. admit

  997. that

  998. we

  999. are

  1000. sinners

  1001. morally

  1002. flawed

  1003. admit

  1004. that

  1005. we

  1006. have

  1007. chosen

  1008. to

  1009. live

  1010. life

  1011. rejecting

  1012. our

  1013. creator

  1014. God

  1015. and

  1016. live

  1017. life

  1018. our

  1019. way

  1020. you

  1021. see

  1022. Jesus

  1023. entire

  1024. mission

  1025. is

  1026. summed

  1027. up

  1028. there

  1029. in

  1030. verse

  1031. 21

  1032. he's

  1033. Emmanuel

  1034. God

  1035. with

  1036. us

  1037. why

  1038. he

  1039. will

  1040. save

  1041. his

  1042. people

  1043. from

  1044. their

  1045. sins

  1046. you

  1047. see

  1048. first

  1049. and

  1050. foremost

  1051. that's

  1052. what

  1053. he

  1054. came

  1055. for

  1056. he

  1057. took

  1058. on

  1059. human

  1060. flesh

  1061. to

  1062. forgive

  1063. us

  1064. and

  1065. so

  1066. it's

  1067. courage

  1068. it

  1069. takes

  1070. a lot

  1071. of

  1072. courage

  1073. to

  1074. admit

  1075. I

  1076. am

  1077. a

  1078. moral

  1079. failure

  1080. I

  1081. don't

  1082. love

  1083. God

  1084. with

  1085. all

  1086. my

  1087. heart

  1088. my

  1089. soul

  1090. and

  1091. my

  1092. strength

  1093. and

  1094. my

  1095. mind

  1096. I

  1097. don't

  1098. love

  1099. my

  1100. neighbor

  1101. as

  1102. myself

  1103. and

  1104. therefore

  1105. I

  1106. am

  1107. guilty

  1108. and

  1109. I

  1110. need

  1111. forgiveness

  1112. and

  1113. pardon

  1114. before

  1115. anything

  1116. else

  1117. that's

  1118. what I

  1119. need

  1120. from

  1121. God

  1122. God

  1123. it

  1124. takes

  1125. an

  1126. enormous

  1127. amount

  1128. of

  1129. courage

  1130. to

  1131. admit

  1132. those

  1133. things

  1134. it

  1135. means

  1136. throwing

  1137. out

  1138. the

  1139. old

  1140. self

  1141. image

  1142. that

  1143. you've

  1144. made

  1145. for

  1146. yourself

  1147. and

  1148. getting

  1149. a new

  1150. one

  1151. through

  1152. Jesus

  1153. and

  1154. that

  1155. admission

  1156. that I

  1157. am

  1158. morally

  1159. flawed

  1160. and I

  1161. need

  1162. Jesus

  1163. as

  1164. my

  1165. savior

  1166. is

  1167. the

  1168. very

  1169. foundation

  1170. for

  1171. all

  1172. the

  1173. other

  1174. things

  1175. that

  1176. this

  1177. God

  1178. wants

  1179. to

  1180. bring

  1181. into

  1182. your

  1183. life

  1184. all

  1185. the

  1186. comfort

  1187. all

  1188. the

  1189. hope

  1190. all

  1191. the

  1192. joyful

  1193. humility

  1194. and

  1195. everything

  1196. else

  1197. the

  1198. only

  1199. way

  1200. that

  1201. we

  1202. would

  1203. have

  1204. such

  1205. courage

  1206. the

  1207. only

  1208. way

  1209. we

  1210. would

  1211. get

  1212. the

  1213. strength

  1214. to be

  1215. courageous

  1216. and

  1217. admit

  1218. that

  1219. is

  1220. by

  1221. looking

  1222. to

  1223. Jesus

  1224. himself

  1225. he's

  1226. the

  1227. only

  1228. source

  1229. of

  1230. that

  1231. courage

  1232. he's

  1233. not

  1234. just

  1235. the

  1236. source

  1237. of

  1238. our

  1239. comfort

  1240. and

  1241. our

  1242. salvation

  1243. and

  1244. our

  1245. hope

  1246. but

  1247. he

  1248. is

  1249. the

  1250. source

  1251. of

  1252. the

  1253. courage

  1254. you

  1255. see

  1256. if

  1257. it

  1258. takes

  1259. courage

  1260. to

  1261. be

  1262. with

  1263. him

  1264. consider

  1265. consider

  1266. that

  1267. it

  1268. took

  1269. infinitely

  1270. more

  1271. courage

  1272. for

  1273. him

  1274. to

  1275. be

  1276. with

  1277. us

  1278. infinitely

  1279. more

  1280. courage

  1281. apart

  1282. from

  1283. Christianity

  1284. no

  1285. other

  1286. religion

  1287. says

  1288. that

  1289. one

  1290. of

  1291. the

  1292. attributes

  1293. of

  1294. the

  1295. divine

  1296. is

  1297. courage

  1298. he

  1299. became

  1300. mortal

  1301. he

  1302. became

  1303. vulnerable

  1304. so

  1305. that

  1306. he

  1307. could

  1308. suffer

  1309. be

  1310. betrayed

  1311. and

  1312. killed

  1313. he

  1314. faced

  1315. our

  1316. darkness

  1317. so

  1318. that

  1319. we

  1320. can

  1321. have

  1322. the

  1323. light

  1324. of

  1325. life

  1326. and

  1327. that

  1328. means

  1329. that

  1330. because

  1331. he's

  1332. done

  1333. that

  1334. for

  1335. us

  1336. it

  1337. enables

  1338. us

  1339. to

  1340. face

  1341. any

  1342. darkness

  1343. ourselves

  1344. and

  1345. still

  1346. have

  1347. the

  1348. light

  1349. of

  1350. hope

  1351. and

  1352. he

  1353. did

  1354. it

  1355. all

  1356. willingly

  1357. for

  1358. us

  1359. it's

  1360. there

  1361. actually

  1362. in the

  1363. Christmas

  1364. carol

  1365. we haven't

  1366. sung it

  1367. well I'm

  1368. sure we're

  1369. going to

  1370. sing in

  1371. the next

  1372. few

  1373. weeks

  1374. but

  1375. the

  1376. Christmas

  1377. carol

  1378. hark

  1379. the

  1380. herald

  1381. angels

  1382. sing

  1383. there's

  1384. a line

  1385. in

  1386. that

  1387. carol

  1388. which

  1389. where we

  1390. sing

  1391. mild

  1392. he lays

  1393. his glory

  1394. by

  1395. what that

  1396. means

  1397. is

  1398. he

  1399. voluntarily

  1400. did it

  1401. he

  1402. willingly

  1403. did it

  1404. he

  1405. lovingly

  1406. did it

  1407. no one

  1408. forced him

  1409. to lay

  1410. his glory

  1411. aside

  1412. to come

  1413. into this

  1414. world

  1415. and love

  1416. us

  1417. he faced

  1418. unimaginable

  1419. pain

  1420. and death

  1421. and darkness

  1422. out of love

  1423. for humanity

  1424. and so

  1425. why did

  1426. Jesus have

  1427. the courage

  1428. to do

  1429. what he

  1430. did for

  1431. us

  1432. love

  1433. how do

  1434. we get

  1435. the courage

  1436. to admit

  1437. that we're

  1438. sinners

  1439. and we

  1440. need his

  1441. forgiveness

  1442. and a

  1443. relationship

  1444. with him

  1445. exactly

  1446. the same

  1447. way

  1448. by looking

  1449. to him

  1450. and seeing

  1451. all that

  1452. he has

  1453. done

  1454. for us

  1455. that

  1456. consistently

  1457. looking at

  1458. him

  1459. and what

  1460. it cost

  1461. him

  1462. will

  1463. draw

  1464. out

  1465. love

  1466. for him

  1467. and then

  1468. we will

  1469. have the

  1470. courage

  1471. to put

  1472. him

  1473. into the

  1474. centre

  1475. of our

  1476. lives

  1477. and then

  1478. he will

  1479. be

  1480. with you

  1481. and you

  1482. with him

  1483. that's

  1484. Christmas

  1485. and so

  1486. two

  1487. really quick

  1488. implications

  1489. for us

  1490. this morning

  1491. if you're

  1492. someone

  1493. here

  1494. and you

  1495. don't

  1496. know

  1497. Jesus

  1498. I want

  1499. to call

  1500. you to

  1501. be

  1502. courageous

  1503. this

  1504. morning

  1505. he has

  1506. come to

  1507. you

  1508. come to

  1509. him

  1510. this

  1511. morning

  1512. admit

  1513. that you're

  1514. a moral

  1515. failure

  1516. come to

  1517. him

  1518. and find

  1519. in him

  1520. mercy

  1521. and grace

  1522. and love

  1523. and forgiveness

  1524. secondly

  1525. if you're

  1526. someone

  1527. who does

  1528. know

  1529. Jesus

  1530. you've

  1531. already

  1532. come to

  1533. him

  1534. I want

  1535. to call

  1536. you to

  1537. have

  1538. courage

  1539. this

  1540. Christmas

  1541. I want

  1542. you to

  1543. have

  1544. courage

  1545. to pray

  1546. for someone

  1547. that they

  1548. might

  1549. come to

  1550. Jesus

  1551. this

  1552. Christmas

  1553. and courage

  1554. to follow

  1555. through with

  1556. that

  1557. personally

  1558. and invite

  1559. them to

  1560. church

  1561. and so

  1562. we've got

  1563. the Christmas

  1564. invites

  1565. out there

  1566. on the

  1567. Christmas

  1568. station

  1569. near the

  1570. kitchen

  1571. and can

  1572. also

  1573. there's a

  1574. little

  1575. basket

  1576. there

  1577. these are

  1578. feet

  1579. by the

  1580. way

  1581. it's a

  1582. bit hard

  1583. to cut

  1584. the toes

  1585. out

  1586. so

  1587. what I'd

  1588. encourage

  1589. you to

  1590. do

  1591. is to

  1592. have

  1593. courage

  1594. and to

  1595. go there

  1596. get one

  1597. of these

  1598. and put

  1599. the name

  1600. of the

  1601. person

  1602. just their

  1603. first name

  1604. or a

  1605. you know

  1606. whatever

  1607. a friend

  1608. of mine

  1609. and put

  1610. their name

  1611. and just

  1612. stick it

  1613. on the

  1614. wall

  1615. this is the

  1616. person that

  1617. I'm praying

  1618. for for

  1619. Christmas

  1620. this is the

  1621. person I'm

  1622. going to

  1623. invite this

  1624. Christmas

  1625. so do that

  1626. after the

  1627. service

  1628. let's pray

  1629. invite the

  1630. band up

  1631. gracious

  1632. loving

  1633. heavenly

  1634. father

  1635. we thank

  1636. you for

  1637. sending

  1638. your one

  1639. and only

  1640. son

  1641. the

  1642. Lord

  1643. Jesus

  1644. Christ

  1645. we thank

  1646. you for

  1647. his love

  1648. his mercy

  1649. his forgiveness

  1650. we thank

  1651. you

  1652. that you're a

  1653. God not

  1654. just of

  1655. justice

  1656. but a

  1657. God of

  1658. deep mercy

  1659. and forgiveness

  1660. and so

  1661. if there are

  1662. any here

  1663. this morning

  1664. who are

  1665. wavering

  1666. with that

  1667. courage

  1668. to come

  1669. to you

  1670. Holy

  1671. Spirit

  1672. send the

  1673. light of

  1674. life

  1675. into their

  1676. hearts right

  1677. now and

  1678. bring them

  1679. to you

  1680. and for

  1681. those of us

  1682. who do

  1683. know you

  1684. help us

  1685. to courageously

  1686. take our

  1687. next step

  1688. leading into

  1689. your love

  1690. this Christmas

  1691. and we ask

  1692. it for your

  1693. sake

  1694. Amen
