  1. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to St Paul's. My name's Steve. I've never met you before.

  2. ! I'm the lead pastor here. In this last couple of weeks, as you probably realise, maybe,

  3. that we've been in our Christmas season here at St Paul's. And I began this season by quoting

  4. the late theologian James Packer, who suggested that what Christianity claims

  5. regarding Christmas is so outrageous that nothing in all of fiction has anything like it. In other

  6. words, what he's saying there is that there is no worldview that comes even close to the outrageous

  7. claims of what the Bible declares around Christmas and other things. And so what we've been doing

  8. in the last couple of weeks is really exploring some of those claims and whether or not you can

  9. actually believe what the Bible says about Christmas, or whether it's just much better just to keep it

  10. as a holiday at the end of the year and with a great deal of light and joy and so on. The claim

  11. of Christmas in the Christian faith is the claim that the infinite God who made all things became

  12. a human being, a limited human being, a Jew, a helpless human baby, unable to do more than lie and stare

  13. and wriggle and make noises, needing to be fed and changed and taught to talk like any other child.

  14. And if that wasn't enough in terms of just the claims of Christmas, the claim that the Almighty became a

  15. baby, but also the fact that the author of life came into this world to die on a cross for humanity.

  16. It claims, the Bible claims that Jesus performed miracles, that he was raised from the dead,

  17. and that he is now present with his followers by his Holy Spirit through his word.

  18. It claims that he will, Jesus will come back to earth one day as universal judge and ruler of all things.

  19. Extraordinary claims.

  20. Not just the claims of Christmas, but extraordinary claims.

  21. And we need some serious evidence to believe any of those claims.

  22. And that's kind of what we've been looking at the last couple of weeks through our Christmas season.

  23. And if you've just joined us, there's a couple of really short resources to do with Christmas and whether or not it's believable.

  24. Just on the other side of the wall, you can take these and continue on yourself.

  25. Extraordinary claims.

  26. And yet, billions of people from all different culture groups and different socioeconomic educational stages of life and other things like that have come to believe those claims.

  27. In fact, some of the smartest people in the world today believe those claims.

  28. And throughout history believe that the claims of the Bible are true and that they are, in fact, not just true, but have authority over my life in every aspect of my life.

  29. And so, as we, you know, come to the close of our Christmas season and, you know, if you're already thinking ahead, if you're like me, people with ADHD, you're always thinking of something else forward.

  30. You know, the New Year's there, New Year's resolutions are there.

  31. And so, I want to put the claims of the Christian faith and specifically the reliability of the Bible in front of us and an encouragement for you to pick it up and to read it as you look into the year ahead and explore those claims and what they mean for your life.

  32. And, in fact, that's really what we're going to be doing as we move into January as well.

  33. Just looking a bit more about the reliability of the claims of the Christian faith, why you'd want to believe it in 2026 and why you'd want to shape your life around those claims.

  34. So, what I want to do today really is just really simply, very quickly propose that the Bible is true and reliable for everything in life and faith.

  35. And I want to say really that the Bible is historically, culturally and personally reliable.

  36. Okay, so that's kind of our journey today.

  37. So, one of the common accusations today is that the Bible and particularly the New Testament accounts about Jesus and what are written there were written by the winners in history, if you like.

  38. The claim that he did miracles, that he was, that Jesus was divine and that he rose again were all written much later in time by church leaders who were trying to get Christianity to spread and to be the dominant religion in the world.

  39. And so, what those church leaders did was they fudged things a little bit to kind of make it, to make it more effective, if you like.

  40. They just sort of fudged a little bit of the accusations, prop Jesus up a little bit more to make him what he was than what he wasn't actually.

  41. Now, there are many reasons why those accusations, people might want to grab hold of them, but also why they fundamentally are not right at all.

  42. But let me look briefly at three reasons why you can trust what the Bible says about Jesus.

  43. And I'm referring here particularly about the New Testament, what it says about Jesus.

  44. Firstly, the New Testament accounts about Jesus were written far too early for them to be legends.

  45. Take the beginning of Luke.

  46. The angels read out to us, Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  47. Luke was written as a biography of Jesus and he points out to his readers there in verses 2 and 3,

  48. So here's Luke.

  49. Luke is writing this gospel that Andrew just read out to us.

  50. He's writing it 30 to 40 years, only 30 to 40 years after Jesus.

  51. And he makes the point there that lots of people who saw Jesus are still alive right now.

  52. And so you can check the facts with those people.

  53. And writing even closer to those events than Luke here was Paul.

  54. And Paul wrote his letters only 15 to 20 years after the events of Jesus' life.

  55. And he says this in 1 Corinthians 15 verse 6 about the resurrection of Jesus.

    1 Corinthians 15:6

  56. He appeared to more than 500 of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living.

  57. So what that means is Paul could not have possibly written a public document promoting Christianity,

  58. a statement like that, unless it was in fact the case.

  59. Or in Philippians chapter 2, Paul quotes a hymn of Jesus' divinity.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  60. And if Philippians is written so close to the events of Jesus' life,

  61. and Paul is quoting something here that's written earlier about Jesus,

  62. then what it says in Philippians 2 is that the very earliest Christians worshipped Jesus as God.

  63. The very earliest Christians worshipped him as God,

  64. which stands opposed to the claims that Christians didn't worship him as God

  65. until 300 to 400 years later under Constantine.

  66. Absolute rubbish.

  67. They worshipped him as God from the very beginning.

  68. The documents of the New Testament are way too early for people to say whatever they wanted about Jesus,

  69. while thousands of people who witnessed him in person were still alive.

  70. Secondly, documents of the New Testament are too counterproductive to be legends.

  71. Remember, the accusation is that the Bible is what the early,

  72. the New Testament is what the early church leaders wanted people to believe had happened,

  73. because this helped them to consolidate their power

  74. and to grow the Christian faith throughout the Roman Empire.

  75. So imagine you're a church leader living 70 to 80 years after Jesus,

  76. and so what you've decided to do to consolidate your power

  77. is to make up a heap of stories about him.

  78. Would you put in those stories

  79. that Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane

  80. asking the Father to get out of his plan?

  81. If there's any other way of doing this,

  82. please come up with another plan.

  83. Would you put that story in it?

  84. Not in the Roman Empire, you wouldn't.

  85. In fact, it was the Garden of Gethsemane

  86. and the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross

  87. that resulted in the Nazi Party rejecting Christianity

  88. because they would not believe in a God who was so weak.

  89. That was the fundamental issue for Adolf Hitler.

  90. Christianity is about humility and about sacrifice,

  91. and that is weak.

  92. And that's the Roman Empire.

  93. Would you put Jesus on a cross asking God

  94. why he had forsaken him?

  95. Jesus looks weak.

  96. Would you include in your first century stories

  97. that all of your very first eyewitnesses

  98. to the historical fact of the resurrection were women

  99. at a time when women's evidence

  100. was not even permissible, admissible in court

  101. because of their low social status?

  102. And all the gospel accounts say

  103. that the original eyewitnesses were women.

  104. If you're trying to fudge things,

  105. why would you put that in there?

  106. Not only that,

  107. but when you get into the New Testament,

  108. you see the apostles don't come across

  109. as glowing historic, heroic figures in any way.

  110. They're cowardly.

  111. They're slow to believe,

  112. and they are fundamentally self-interested.

  113. So why include any of it

  114. if they were in fact making it up?

  115. They are in fact totally counterproductive

  116. for consolidating power

  117. for the early Christian leaders

  118. of the Christian movement.

  119. And thirdly,

  120. they are too detailed.

  121. The New Testament accounts are too detailed

  122. to be legends.

  123. Ancient myths and novels

  124. were never written like this.

  125. Modern novels might have,

  126. if you like,

  127. familiar characteristics to the New Testament,

  128. but not ancient ones.

  129. The New Testament accounts of Jesus

  130. don't have the form of legends.

  131. They are written too early to be legends,

  132. and they are too counterproductive to be legends.

  133. And so you can trust them.

  134. Now, that's just really brief.

  135. I haven't touched on the Old Testament.

  136. I haven't got time to delve into all of that as well.

  137. But briefly,

  138. if you can trust what the New Testament says about Jesus,

  139. then you can trust what Jesus says

  140. about the Old Testament.

  141. And his view was that the Old Testament,

  142. the Jewish Bible,

  143. was God's word,

  144. it was true,

  145. and it had authority.

  146. Historically reliable New Testament.

  147. Secondly,

  148. it's culturally reliable.

  149. Now,

  150. I think it's pretty much true to say

  151. that modern people

  152. care less about the historical reliability of the Bible

  153. because, really,

  154. in our Western world,

  155. particularly at the moment,

  156. we're more troubled about the cultural aspects of the Bible.

  157. And in our progressive cultural society at the moment,

  158. we consider many aspects of the Bible offensive,

  159. primitive,

  160. and backward.

  161. The Bible offends Sidneysiders in many ways,

  162. in certain ways.

  163. Of course,

  164. the offense might have a long list,

  165. but the offense is a constantly moving offense,

  166. and the list constantly changes.

  167. So here's three considerations

  168. for any bit of the Bible

  169. that you regard offends you right now,

  170. that, you know,

  171. you want to read it with a pair of scissors

  172. and cut that bit out,

  173. keep these bits,

  174. but cut those bits out.

  175. Three considerations.

  176. Firstly,

  177. consider the possibility

  178. it isn't teaching

  179. what you think it's teaching.

  180. For instance,

  181. I could never understand

  182. why some of the great spiritual heroes

  183. of the Old Testament

  184. had so many wives.

  185. until I realized

  186. that the Bible

  187. in no way

  188. was endorsing it.

  189. It was recording it,

  190. not endorsing it.

  191. And in fact,

  192. the Bible

  193. in every instance

  194. in those moments

  195. is actually subverting it.

  196. In every case

  197. where polygamy was practiced,

  198. it goes bad

  199. for those people.

  200. Families break down,

  201. lives are ruined,

  202. physically,

  203. spiritually,

  204. emotionally,

  205. relationally,

  206. in every single instance.

  207. You see,

  208. if the Bible

  209. is a recording of history,

  210. it doesn't just record

  211. the successful bits.

  212. It records

  213. all the evil

  214. and the carnage

  215. and the difficulty

  216. and the sin.

  217. The Bible shows us,

  218. in fact,

  219. how bad it is.

  220. The Bible

  221. wasn't endorsing

  222. what I thought

  223. it was endorsing.

  224. It was simply

  225. recording it.

  226. Secondly,

  227. please consider

  228. the possibility

  229. that you are

  230. misunderstanding

  231. what the Bible

  232. teaches

  233. because

  234. of your own

  235. cultural blind spots,

  236. which we all bring

  237. to the Bible.

  238. in Luke 24

    Luke 24:20

  239. verses 20,

  240. 21,

  241. again,

  242. Anne read this out

  243. to us.

  244. On the road to Emmaus,

  245. we see these early

  246. disciples

  247. had misunderstood

  248. the prophecies

  249. about the Messiah.

  250. You see,

  251. as Jews,

  252. they were really

  253. only thinking

  254. about the redemption

  255. of Israel,

  256. currently under

  257. occupation

  258. by the Roman Empire.

  259. They weren't thinking

  260. in terms of the redemption

  261. of the whole human race.

  262. They had a cultural

  263. blind spot

  264. that meant

  265. they misread

  266. Scripture

  267. and therefore

  268. they misread

  269. Jesus.

  270. And the modern person

  271. does the same.

  272. In many ways,

  273. for instance,

  274. a common one nowadays

  275. is that on slavery,

  276. one accusation is

  277. the Bible condones

  278. slavery

  279. and we all know

  280. nowadays

  281. that slavery is wrong.

  282. If it is wrong

  283. on that moral issue,

  284. then it's quite possibly

  285. it's wrong

  286. on every other

  287. moral issue as well.

  288. And I've heard

  289. that argument

  290. played out

  291. even in the press

  292. over the last

  293. five to ten years

  294. on multiple occasions

  295. whenever a moral issue

  296. is raised.

  297. And so does

  298. the Bible

  299. condone slavery.

  300. For instance,

  301. there's parts

  302. of the New Testament

  303. when Paul tells

  304. slaves to obey

  305. their masters

  306. and as soon as

  307. we read that

  308. we go,

  309. well,

  310. there you go.

  311. You know,

  312. there it is right there.

  313. Condoning of slavery.

  314. In fact,

  315. in one New Testament

  316. letter,

  317. Paul is addressing

  318. a relationship

  319. between a master

  320. and his slave

  321. and it's clear

  322. from that letter

  323. it's not the kind

  324. of relationship

  325. that we would

  326. in fact call

  327. modern slavery

  328. at all.

  329. You see,

  330. when we read

  331. the word slave

  332. in the Bible

  333. we automatically

  334. import

  335. 17th,

  336. 18th

  337. and 19th

  338. century

  339. thinking,

  340. experience,

  341. history

  342. and modern

  343. slavery

  344. into the Bible

  345. which is

  346. in those

  347. the 16th

  348. through to the

  349. 19th century

  350. slavery

  351. is race-based

  352. and ethnic

  353. minority slavery.

  354. when we read

  355. the Bible

  356. with those

  357. cultural blinders

  358. on

  359. we are not

  360. understanding

  361. what the Bible

  362. is teaching

  363. and we're not

  364. actually allowing

  365. it to sit

  366. in its historical

  367. context.

  368. In the Greco-Roman

  369. world of the

  370. New Testament

  371. slaves were not

  372. distinguishable

  373. from anyone

  374. else

  375. by their

  376. race

  377. by the way

  378. that they

  379. spoke

  380. or by the

  381. clothing

  382. that they

  383. wore.

  384. They looked

  385. and lived

  386. like everyone

  387. else

  388. and they

  389. were not

  390. segregated

  391. off

  392. as a

  393. different

  394. segment

  395. of society.

  396. Slaves

  397. were often

  398. quite well

  399. educated

  400. and they

  401. held high

  402. managerial

  403. roles.

  404. Slaves

  405. also made

  406. the same

  407. wages

  408. as free

  409. labourers

  410. and therefore

  411. over time

  412. they were

  413. able to

  414. pay off

  415. the debt

  416. that resulted

  417. them being

  418. into slavery

  419. in the first

  420. place

  421. and to buy

  422. themselves

  423. out of that

  424. scenario.

  425. Much like

  426. the very

  427. early convicts

  428. of Australia

  429. who at the

  430. end of their

  431. day

  432. went home

  433. to their

  434. homes

  435. and their

  436. families

  437. and their

  438. houses.

  439. Slavery

  440. was never

  441. a permanent

  442. status.

  443. The average

  444. slave worked

  445. for a master

  446. for about

  447. 10 years

  448. and this

  449. is very

  450. different

  451. than new

  452. world slavery

  453. of the past

  454. 300 years

  455. or so.

  456. So those

  457. who have

  458. used the

  459. Bible

  460. to defend

  461. their

  462. practice

  463. of kidnapping

  464. and slavery

  465. in the

  466. slave trade

  467. in the past

  468. several hundred

  469. years

  470. have read

  471. the Bible

  472. through their

  473. cultural

  474. blind spots

  475. and those

  476. who use

  477. it today

  478. to reject

  479. the Bible

  480. are you

  481. reading it

  482. through their

  483. cultural

  484. blind spots?

  485. Thirdly,

  486. consider the

  487. possibility

  488. that you're

  489. being offended

  490. by the

  491. Bible

  492. because of

  493. assumption

  494. that your

  495. cultural

  496. moment,

  497. our cultural

  498. moment,

  499. is superior

  500. to all

  501. other

  502. cultural

  503. moments.

  504. Often

  505. that

  506. assumption

  507. has actually

  508. in fact

  509. never been

  510. tested

  511. or

  512. acknowledged.

  513. The reason

  514. we are

  515. offended by

  516. some

  517. biblical

  518. passages

  519. is because

  520. it's

  521. culturally

  522. offensive

  523. in our

  524. own

  525. cultural

  526. moment.

  527. But in

  528. other

  529. cultural

  530. moments

  531. today,

  532. right,

  533. today,

  534. in other

  535. parts of

  536. the world,

  537. and also

  538. historically

  539. in the

  540. past,

  541. they have

  542. absolutely

  543. no problem

  544. with the

  545. same

  546. passage of

  547. the Bible.

  548. On the

  549. other hand,

  550. the passages

  551. that we

  552. think are

  553. totally fine

  554. for us

  555. and appropriate

  556. for our

  557. cultural

  558. moment,

  559. others in

  560. the past

  561. and in

  562. other parts

  563. of the

  564. world

  565. are

  566. fundamentally

  567. appalled

  568. by those

  569. passages.

  570. For

  571. instance,

  572. in our

  573. progressive,

  574. individualistic

  575. Western

  576. society,

  577. what the

  578. Bible says

  579. about

  580. sexual

  581. relationships,

  582. we go,

  583. you know,

  584. like,

  585. that is

  586. pre-1950s,

  587. it's

  588. so narrow-minded,

  589. and you

  590. get on a

  591. plane and

  592. you go to

  593. the Middle

  594. East and

  595. they go,

  596. yeah,

  597. absolutely,

  598. what the

  599. Bible says

  600. about sex,

  601. totally

  602. appropriate.

  603. That's

  604. exactly right,

  605. that's

  606. exactly how

  607. it should

  608. be.

  609. And yet,

  610. we,

  611. in our

  612. cultural

  613. moment here,

  614. we read

  615. what the

  616. Bible says

  617. about forgiveness

  618. of someone

  619. who has

  620. wronged you,

  621. about doing

  622. good for

  623. other people,

  624. and we

  625. go,

  626. yes,

  627. that is

  628. absolutely

  629. appropriate,

  630. it is

  631. good and

  632. it's

  633. right,

  634. and again,

  635. you get

  636. on a

  637. plane and

  638. you fly

  639. the Middle

  640. East and

  641. they say

  642. what the

  643. Bible says

  644. about

  645. forgiveness,

  646. that is

  647. absolutely

  648. offensive,

  649. totally

  650. inappropriate.

  651. We love

  652. forgiveness

  653. and hate

  654. justice,

  655. whereas

  656. 14 hours

  657. away on

  658. an

  659. airplane,

  660. and they

  661. love justice

  662. and hate

  663. forgiveness.

  664. If we

  665. are offended

  666. by something

  667. in the

  668. Bible,

  669. why should

  670. our cultural

  671. sensibilities

  672. trump everyone

  673. else's cultural

  674. sensibilities?

  675. Why should

  676. we say

  677. we've got it

  678. right and

  679. they've got it

  680. wrong?

  681. That's a bit

  682. arrogant,

  683. isn't it?

  684. a bit

  685. narrow-minded,

  686. isn't it?

  687. Why get

  688. rid of the

  689. Bible?

  690. Because it

  691. offends

  692. our culture

  693. only at

  694. certain

  695. points.

  696. And if

  697. you haven't

  698. worked that

  699. one out,

  700. bear in

  701. mind that

  702. all of

  703. your

  704. great

  705. grandchildren

  706. are going

  707. to find

  708. a lot

  709. of what

  710. you think

  711. today to

  712. be

  713. incredibly

  714. embarrassing.

  715. where you

  716. think your

  717. cultural

  718. moment is

  719. progressive

  720. and right,

  721. your

  722. great

  723. grandchildren

  724. are going

  725. to think,

  726. my goodness,

  727. my great

  728. grandparents

  729. were

  730. narrow-minded.

  731. don't miss

  732. out on

  733. all that

  734. the

  735. Bible

  736. and the

  737. Christian

  738. faith

  739. has to

  740. offer

  741. you

  742. just

  743. because

  744. you

  745. can't

  746. get

  747. over

  748. one

  749. aspect

  750. of

  751. your

  752. so-called

  753. cultural

  754. truth,

  755. your

  756. cultural

  757. moment,

  758. that in

  759. fact,

  760. your

  761. cultural

  762. moment

  763. will in

  764. fact be

  765. considered

  766. a joke

  767. within

  768. 50

  769. years.

  770. If the

  771. Bible

  772. really is

  773. God

  774. revealing

  775. himself

  776. to

  777. his

  778. creation

  779. and

  780. it's

  781. not

  782. just

  783. a

  784. byproduct

  785. of

  786. any

  787. specific

  788. culture,

  789. then what

  790. that means

  791. is it

  792. will

  793. contradict

  794. every

  795. culture

  796. at some

  797. point.

  798. It

  799. will

  800. offend

  801. every

  802. culture

  803. and every

  804. cultural

  805. moment

  806. at

  807. some

  808. point.

  809. And so

  810. if you

  811. read it

  812. and find

  813. some

  814. things

  815. beautiful

  816. and other

  817. bits

  818. offensive,

  819. then it's

  820. probably

  821. true

  822. and it's

  823. from God.

  824. But

  825. lastly,

  826. the Bible

  827. is personally

  828. reliable.

  829. A

  830. completely,

  831. a completely,

  832. that is a

  833. totally

  834. authoritative

  835. Bible

  836. is in

  837. fact

  838. the

  839. prerequisite

  840. for a

  841. warm

  842. personal

  843. relationship

  844. with God.

  845. It is

  846. not the

  847. enemy

  848. of it.

  849. Have a

  850. look there

  851. at Luke

  852. 24 that

  853. Anne read

  854. out for

  855. us,

  856. verse 32.

  857. The

  858. disciples

  859. are reflecting

  860. back on

  861. their journey

  862. over the

  863. last previous

  864. days as

  865. they walk

  866. in their

  867. road to

  868. Emmaus

  869. with Jesus

  870. and it

  871. says,

  872. were not

  873. our hearts

  874. burning

  875. within us

  876. while he

  877. talked with

  878. us on

  879. the road

  880. and opened

  881. the scriptures

  882. to us?

  883. So in

  884. the Bible,

  885. the heart

  886. is not

  887. the muscle

  888. pumping the

  889. blood through

  890. the system.

  891. The heart

  892. is the

  893. centre of

  894. the whole

  895. person.

  896. It's the

  897. driving centre

  898. of the

  899. person,

  900. not just

  901. the emotions,

  902. it's the

  903. driving centre

  904. of the

  905. desires of

  906. the person.

  907. And the

  908. hearts

  909. burning

  910. here means

  911. a full

  912. life-changing

  913. personal

  914. encounter

  915. with God.

  916. That's what

  917. it means

  918. here in

  919. Luke 24.

  920. They

  921. experienced

  922. something on

  923. that road

  924. to Emmaus

  925. with Jesus

  926. that they

  927. had never

  928. experienced

  929. before.

  930. When?

  931. When did

  932. they experience

  933. it?

  934. when the

  935. Bible and

  936. its meaning

  937. was properly

  938. opened up

  939. to them.

  940. When they

  941. understood

  942. what it

  943. had meant.

  944. And that

  945. is the

  946. key to

  947. this deep

  948. personal

  949. relationship.

  950. Notice how

  951. it happens.

  952. Verses

  953. 20-21,

  954. they say

  955. Jesus died,

  956. but we

  957. had hoped

  958. that he

  959. would be

  960. the one

  961. who would

  962. save us.

  963. that's

  964. what they

  965. had hoped.

  966. Their

  967. cultural

  968. blinders

  969. were on.

  970. He's the

  971. Messiah

  972. of Israel.

  973. We had

  974. hoped he

  975. would save

  976. us.

  977. And Jesus

  978. calls them

  979. out for

  980. being foolish

  981. and so

  982. slow to

  983. believe the

  984. scriptures.

  985. What did

  986. they not

  987. understand?

  988. Keys

  989. verse 27.

  990. beginning

  991. with

  992. Moses

  993. and all

  994. the

  995. prophets,

  996. he

  997. explained

  998. to them

  999. what was

  1000. said in

  1001. all the

  1002. scriptures

  1003. concerning

  1004. himself.

  1005. That's the

  1006. key to it

  1007. right there.

  1008. What Jesus

  1009. is saying

  1010. here is

  1011. that everything

  1012. in the

  1013. Bible

  1014. is about

  1015. him.

  1016. It's all

  1017. about

  1018. him.

  1019. He

  1020. way too

  1021. many people

  1022. have walked

  1023. away from

  1024. the Christian

  1025. faith and

  1026. ultimately from

  1027. the Bible

  1028. because they've

  1029. misunderstood

  1030. that crucial

  1031. central point.

  1032. If we

  1033. think the

  1034. Bible is

  1035. about us

  1036. and what

  1037. we must

  1038. do,

  1039. then what

  1040. that means

  1041. is we

  1042. don't need

  1043. a saviour.

  1044. We don't

  1045. need a

  1046. Messiah

  1047. dying for

  1048. us.

  1049. All we

  1050. need is a

  1051. bunch of

  1052. rules and

  1053. a code of

  1054. conduct to

  1055. live by.

  1056. That's what

  1057. it means

  1058. if we think

  1059. it's about

  1060. us.

  1061. You see,

  1062. there are

  1063. only two

  1064. ways to

  1065. read the

  1066. Bible.

  1067. Read it

  1068. as if it's

  1069. all about

  1070. me and

  1071. what I

  1072. must do

  1073. or we

  1074. can read

  1075. every part

  1076. of it as

  1077. if it's

  1078. about him,

  1079. God,

  1080. and what

  1081. he has

  1082. done for

  1083. us.

  1084. And the

  1085. whole Bible,

  1086. the whole

  1087. lot of

  1088. it,

  1089. Old Testament

  1090. included,

  1091. points us

  1092. to Jesus

  1093. and it

  1094. explains

  1095. Jesus and

  1096. everything that

  1097. Jesus has

  1098. achieved for

  1099. us in

  1100. dying in

  1101. our place

  1102. for our

  1103. sin.

  1104. And the

  1105. Christmas

  1106. message is

  1107. exactly that,

  1108. that God

  1109. entered

  1110. history for

  1111. that purpose.

  1112. You see,

  1113. when the

  1114. Bible is

  1115. all about

  1116. Jesus and

  1117. what he's

  1118. achieved for

  1119. us out of

  1120. purely out of

  1121. love for

  1122. us because

  1123. of our

  1124. incapability to

  1125. do it

  1126. ourselves,

  1127. that all of

  1128. a sudden is

  1129. when it

  1130. becomes

  1131. personal,

  1132. relational.

  1133. It's when the

  1134. Bible starts to

  1135. become an

  1136. encounter with

  1137. him.

  1138. Now,

  1139. my conviction

  1140. from both

  1141. personal

  1142. experience over

  1143. 30-odd

  1144. years and

  1145. also from the

  1146. teaching of the

  1147. Bible itself,

  1148. more importantly,

  1149. is that the

  1150. most effective

  1151. means for

  1152. bolstering

  1153. confidence in

  1154. the Bible is

  1155. not to do

  1156. what I've

  1157. just done in

  1158. the last 20-odd

  1159. minutes,

  1160. giving you

  1161. arguments as

  1162. to why you

  1163. should believe

  1164. it.

  1165. They have a

  1166. place about

  1167. its authority

  1168. and its

  1169. truthfulness and

  1170. its reliability,

  1171. but in actual

  1172. fact, to spend

  1173. time in the

  1174. Bible, reading

  1175. the Bible,

  1176. with Jesus at

  1177. the centre of

  1178. it as a

  1179. supernatural

  1180. activity.

  1181. very simply,

  1182. God, if you

  1183. exist and

  1184. this is your

  1185. word, then

  1186. you need to

  1187. revere yourself

  1188. to me.

  1189. Let me put it

  1190. like this.

  1191. I could

  1192. tell you

  1193. that honey,

  1194. which I'm

  1195. assuming you're

  1196. all familiar

  1197. with,

  1198. honey is a

  1199. substance that

  1200. is made by

  1201. a species of

  1202. insects called

  1203. bees, not

  1204. by all bees,

  1205. but by several

  1206. species of

  1207. bees.

  1208. Bees produce

  1209. honey by

  1210. gathering and

  1211. then refining

  1212. the sugary

  1213. excretions of

  1214. plants and

  1215. the secretions,

  1216. in fact, of

  1217. other insects.

  1218. And this

  1219. refining

  1220. process takes

  1221. place within

  1222. individual

  1223. bees through

  1224. regurgitation

  1225. and the

  1226. enzymatic

  1227. activity that

  1228. happens in

  1229. that process

  1230. where they

  1231. vomit it and

  1232. do stuff

  1233. with it.

  1234. I could also

  1235. tell you that

  1236. honey is

  1237. sweet.

  1238. Like, it's

  1239. sweet because

  1240. it's sweet

  1241. because of

  1242. its high

  1243. concentration

  1244. sugar and

  1245. sugar.

  1246. It's a

  1247. simple

  1248. sugar.

  1249. It's a

  1250. sugar of

  1251. fructose and

  1252. glucose.

  1253. It's about the

  1254. same relative

  1255. sweetness as

  1256. white sugar

  1257. interchangeably.

  1258. So one

  1259. standard teaspoon

  1260. of honey provides

  1261. around 120

  1262. kilojoules of

  1263. food energy.

  1264. honey.

  1265. And I

  1266. could go on

  1267. and break

  1268. down the

  1269. chemical

  1270. components that

  1271. make up

  1272. honey and

  1273. tell you from

  1274. all that

  1275. information,

  1276. you should be

  1277. able to

  1278. deduce that

  1279. honey is

  1280. sweet.

  1281. If you're a

  1282. chemist.

  1283. It's all

  1284. true.

  1285. but the

  1286. best thing I

  1287. could do

  1288. for you is

  1289. not tell you

  1290. that honey is

  1291. sweet but to

  1292. actually get

  1293. some onto a

  1294. teaspoon and

  1295. shove it in

  1296. your mouth.

  1297. That's when

  1298. you go,

  1299. oh, I

  1300. get what

  1301. you're talking

  1302. about now.

  1303. You see,

  1304. and if in

  1305. that moment

  1306. that I put

  1307. it on a

  1308. teaspoon and

  1309. shove it in

  1310. your mouth,

  1311. if you don't

  1312. get it then

  1313. no amount

  1314. of explanation,

  1315. no more

  1316. argumentation

  1317. will in

  1318. any way

  1319. come through

  1320. for you

  1321. at all.

  1322. And so

  1323. as 2025

  1324. draws to a

  1325. close and

  1326. we move

  1327. forward into

  1328. 2026,

  1329. I want

  1330. to do,

  1331. to invite

  1332. you to do

  1333. what

  1334. King David

  1335. invited others

  1336. to do and

  1337. to join him

  1338. in in

  1339. Psalm 34

    Psalms 34:8

  1340. verse 8,

  1341. to taste

  1342. and see

  1343. that the

  1344. Lord is

  1345. good in

  1346. 2026.

  1347. You see,

  1348. the best way

  1349. for you to

  1350. build confidence

  1351. in the

  1352. reliability of

  1353. the scriptures

  1354. is to

  1355. actually read

  1356. it.

  1357. And to

  1358. read it

  1359. regularly

  1360. and ask

  1361. God to

  1362. work in

  1363. you as

  1364. you read

  1365. it,

  1366. to reveal

  1367. himself.

  1368. You see,

  1369. God himself

  1370. promises to

  1371. bless the

  1372. reading and

  1373. teaching of

  1374. his word.

  1375. The word

  1376. of God

  1377. itself is

  1378. more than

  1379. enough to

  1380. accomplish the

  1381. work of God

  1382. in the people

  1383. of God.

  1384. And there is

  1385. no better

  1386. way to

  1387. understand and

  1388. to come to

  1389. embrace the

  1390. truth of

  1391. the Bible

  1392. than, in

  1393. fact, than

  1394. to open it

  1395. up and to

  1396. let it

  1397. into your

  1398. life, as

  1399. a regular

  1400. habit in

  1401. your life.

  1402. And so I

  1403. commend it to

  1404. you that

  1405. you might

  1406. not just

  1407. know it,

  1408. but that

  1409. you might

  1410. taste and

  1411. see in

  1412. 2026 that

  1413. the Lord

  1414. is good.

  1415. Amen.
