  1. Well, good morning, friends. It's 2026. The first month of 2026 is gone already. We're into

  2. ! Month two, how fast it goes. And this year marks 125 years since this church here, St. Paul's

  3. ! Chastwood was started. And so this term, as Nick has said, we are launching our vision for the next

  4. five to 10 years of what our life and ministry will be together in this place. And as we get into

  5. those details of those plans and what we're hoping to do under God, it's crucial that we understand

  6. that it is built on a foundation of who we are. Who is the church? It's not often the way that we

  7. think about church, though, is it? Who is the church? We normally think of it in terms of an

  8. institution or things like a denomination or a building. The church is a building.

  9. Or people say it's a lovely church, which they're referring to the building. Or it's the place,

  10. it's a destination. I'm going to church this morning. When we think of the church, we think

  11. of plans, we think of methodologies, we think of vision, we think of structures, we think of programs,

  12. we think of budgets, we think of all those things. And they all have a place. But first and foremost,

  13. we must understand who the church is. Not what the church is, but who the church is.

  14. You see, the Bible overflows with powerful imagery of God's affection and his love for his church.

  15. Imagery of the family, the body of Christ. And the one that we often maybe don't talk about

  16. is the church being the bride of Christ. That is, the church reflects God's eternal beauty and glory.

  17. And I wish I could unpack this one in just a sermon by itself. But the great English preacher,

  18. Charles Spurgeon, called the church the dearest place on earth.

  19. Not often the way we think of the church, the dearest place on earth. And so what we have in the

  20. Apostle Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus, the Ephesians here, which is what we're going to be

  21. working through this term, is the grand vision of the church's cosmic role as the body of Christ,

  22. Christ as the bride of Christ in God's eternal plans. That's what we have in the book Ephesians. You

  23. won't find anywhere else in the Bible so clear about the vision that God has for his church,

  24. the bride of his son, Jesus. The Ephesians reveals the position and the job description of the church

  25. in effecting God's grand plan for all time and eternity. In fact, the church is central to God's plans.

  26. The 18th century American pastor and theologian, Jonathan Edwards, emphasized this point in a sermon

  27. where he said that so centralism. He said, God created the entire universe for one main end.

  28. And that end was to obtain a spouse for his beloved son.

  29. And so as you read through the Bible, what you see reflected again and again is the language of God's

  30. love and affection for his church.

  31. When he looks at his church, he doesn't look at the things that we look for,

  32. the programs, the timing, the people, the buildings, the air conditioners, whether they're working or not,

  33. which one of them isn't working this morning. He doesn't look at that.

  34. He sees the beauty of his bride for his son, beautified by the blood of his son.

  35. And he longs for the day, as Revelation tells us, where the buyer is beautifully prepared

  36. and ready for the marriage feast.

  37. That's his church.

  38. And so as we look ahead for our plans for our next phase of life and ministry together,

  39. my prayer is that our affections would be awakened for his church

  40. and why we exist.

  41. And that that would transform our lives.

  42. To quote Spurgeon again, nothing in the world is dearer to God's heart than his church.

  43. Therefore, being his, let us belong to it, that by our prayers, our gifts, and our labours,

  44. we may support and strengthen it.

  45. May that be the outcome.

  46. So the first thing I want us to see this morning is that who we are, we are blessed.

  47. And I've got three points, which you can get on the St. Paul's app as we go through.

  48. So first of all, God has a plan.

  49. Now, no English translation of the New Testament is able to capture fully Ephesians 3 to 14.

  50. Because in the original language, the Greek language, that is one sentence.

  51. Verses 3 to 14 is one sentence.

  52. 202 words in one sentence.

  53. And to get to the meaning of a sentence, as you would know,

  54. I had to Google this, but you probably don't need to Google this.

  55. But to get to the meaning of a sentence, you need really to find two things.

  56. You need to find the subject of a sentence, and you need to find the predicate of a sentence.

  57. And then you capture the what is the sentence about.

  58. The subject and the predicate.

  59. So for those of you in basic English, you might want to write that bit down.

  60. So the subject tells us who or the what the sentence is about.

  61. And the predicate tells us what the subject does.

  62. And in this very long sentence, it's very clear the subject is God.

  63. And the predicate in the English language is a little bit harder to spot.

  64. Because there's a number of little, you know, predicates in this sentence, in the English language.

  65. God is doing many things in this.

  66. But in the original language, in the Greek, the predicate is very clear.

  67. And it's in verses 9 to 11.

  68. And it is very simply, particularly verses 8 and 9.

  69. With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will,

  70. according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ.

  71. And verse 10.

  72. Everything in history is in his plan.

  73. To be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment.

  74. And Jesus is the point of the plan.

  75. The second half of verse 10.

  76. To bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

  77. Subject is God.

  78. And the predicate is what God is doing through all of history is to bring everything unified under Christ.

  79. That is what God is doing through all of history.

  80. And his church is central to that plan.

  81. Which means, having read that from Ephesians, Bertrand Russell was wrong.

  82. Bertrand Russell's view, which is basically the secular view of our time,

  83. is that there is no plan for time and space.

  84. In his book, The Free Man's Worship, he wrote,

  85. Man, humanity, is the product of causes which have no prevision of the end that they were achieving.

  86. That is, that his origin, his growth, his hopes and fears, his loves and his beliefs,

  87. are but the outcome of accidental collocation of atoms.

  88. That no fire, no heroism, no intensity of thought and feeling,

  89. can preserve an individual life beyond the grave.

  90. In other words, Russell was absolutely convinced, as our secular age is,

  91. that everything is an accident.

  92. There's no plan, there's no creator, there's no purpose, there's no meaning.

  93. And he goes on to say,

  94. Therefore, there's no heroism, no sacrifice, no human achievement,

  95. no human advancement at all, will ultimately make any difference in the long run.

  96. It might in the short term, but in the long run,

  97. it'll make absolutely no difference whatsoever.

  98. And so Russell concluded that the best way to live life,

  99. to embrace life, the only safe way to live life,

  100. is to embrace despair.

  101. Now, to be honest with you,

  102. Bertrand Russell was more courageous than the average secular person.

  103. Ephesians here says,

  104. There is a plan.

  105. Verse 11,

  106. And absolutely everything in history is in that plan.

  107. Everything is in that plan.

  108. And because that raised a big question for us.

  109. Is everything therefore determined or do humans have free will?

  110. You know, that's a question that's been in history since,

  111. well, as far back as you can record in history.

  112. Are we free or is there a plan that we can't escape in any kind of way?

  113. And the Bible's answer to that question is very simple.

  114. Yes.

  115. Yes.

  116. That's because the Bible is way more nuanced than any philosophy in life.

  117. You see, one view says that everything is absolutely fixed,

  118. our choices don't matter,

  119. and whatever you choose in life is ultimately going to be overridden by the fixed plan.

  120. And what that does,

  121. if it's just that,

  122. what that does is it entirely saps a person of any hope at all.

  123. The other view says that your future,

  124. which is more common nowadays,

  125. that your future is whatever you make it.

  126. All of your choices determine your destiny,

  127. so make sure that you make the right choices in life.

  128. And if that's the case,

  129. if absolutely everything in your life is determined by the choices you make,

  130. the best choice you can make is don't get out of bed in the morning.

  131. Much safer.

  132. You can see because that view of history just loads people up with fear.

  133. And you can see it worked out in the younger generation nowadays,

  134. sucked into a culture of expressive individualism,

  135. and you make all the right choices,

  136. you be who you are.

  137. The Bible says that both of those views are wrong and right.

  138. The Bible says our choices matter,

  139. and God will hold us accountable to them.

  140. But ultimately,

  141. God is in charge,

  142. and his plan will advance,

  143. and his plan is to bless.

  144. It means that we can be absolutely alert,

  145. and at peace at the same time.

  146. It means that.

  147. God is sovereign,

  148. and we get to choose.

  149. Think about this.

  150. How many of your decisions,

  151. for you older people,

  152. how many of your decisions in your 20s

  153. that you desperately felt you needed in order to live life,

  154. that never came to fruition,

  155. that you look back now and go,

  156. geez, I'm glad that never happened?

  157. When I was in my mid-20s,

  158. I was desperately trying to get a young lady to marry me,

  159. praying God would sovereignly overrule,

  160. blah, blah, blah.

  161. And it never happened.

  162. And instead,

  163. this week,

  164. Nat and I celebrate 27 years of marriage.

  165. Yeah,

  166. I mean,

  167. that's goodwill there.

  168. So,

  169. you know,

  170. like,

  171. after 27 years,

  172. I'm glad that my plans never came to fruition.

  173. Back in those days.

  174. Ephesians 1 tells us that God has a plan for all things.

  175. Jesus is the center of God's plan,

  176. and it's a plan to bless.

  177. Verses 1 to 3 is the summary verse of this chapter,

  178. and it's an astonishing claim.

  179. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  180. who has blessed us in the heavenly realms

  181. with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

  182. Has blessed us.

  183. It's already happened.

  184. With every spiritual blessing,

  185. which is absolute language.

  186. Nothing is lacking here.

  187. Nothing is overlooked.

  188. Nothing is held back from God.

  189. I sign off my emails on most cases

  190. with,

  191. you know,

  192. with things like,

  193. you know,

  194. regards,

  195. kind regards.

  196. But most often,

  197. I think,

  198. particularly when I'm

  199. communicating

  200. to Christians,

  201. excuse me,

  202. with Christians,

  203. I often use

  204. blessings,

  205. or many blessings from Steve.

  206. You know,

  207. it means,

  208. in our culture,

  209. to wish someone well.

  210. But that's not what it means here.

  211. God's not wishing us well.

  212. In the New Testament,

  213. the word blessed

  214. is closer to the Hebrew word shalom.

  215. It means to have every joy

  216. and benefit of your heart

  217. and soul

  218. and every longing

  219. for your being fulfilled.

  220. That's what the word blessed means here.

  221. A Christian is someone

  222. who has already

  223. been blessed.

  224. How's that possible?

  225. Well,

  226. the key to it

  227. is right at the end of verse 3,

  228. in Christ.

  229. Verse 4,

  230. God chose us in him.

  231. Verse 5,

  232. we are adopted

  233. through Christ Jesus.

  234. Verse 6,

  235. in the one he loves.

  236. Verse 7,

  237. in him we have redemption.

  238. Verse 9,

  239. God purposed those things

  240. in Christ.

  241. Verse 11,

  242. in him

  243. we were chosen.

  244. You see,

  245. to become a Christian

  246. is not simply

  247. to get Jesus

  248. as your Lord

  249. to obey,

  250. although he is that,

  251. or

  252. a model

  253. to follow in life,

  254. although he is that,

  255. or as a saviour

  256. to be grateful for,

  257. although

  258. you should do that.

  259. A Christian

  260. is someone

  261. who has been put

  262. in Christ,

  263. the theological language of it,

  264. you have union

  265. with Christ.

  266. It's a marriage union.

  267. In such a way

  268. that everything

  269. that belongs to Christ

  270. is now yours.

  271. You are united

  272. to Jesus Christ,

  273. and we are united

  274. to Jesus legally.

  275. Imagine the scenario

  276. of a very poor person

  277. marrying

  278. an extremely

  279. wealthy person

  280. without any

  281. prenuptial agreements.

  282. In that moment,

  283. when you are legally married,

  284. everything

  285. that is owned

  286. by the wealthy person

  287. is shared

  288. with you legally.

  289. You share it

  290. legally.

  291. You have a right

  292. to it

  293. through

  294. legal union.

  295. And so

  296. what it says here,

  297. everything

  298. that belongs

  299. to Jesus,

  300. every single thing

  301. that he has accomplished

  302. belongs

  303. to the Christian.

  304. but we're also

  305. united to him

  306. vitally.

  307. The Holy Spirit

  308. comes into the life

  309. of the Christian

  310. and the life

  311. of the church,

  312. and it brings

  313. character change.

  314. The Spirit brings

  315. character change

  316. into the likeness

  317. !

  318. of the bridegroom.

  319. So the bride

  320. reflects the bridegroom

  321. until eventually

  322. on the final day

  323. at the wedding feast,

  324. we are glorified.

  325. we will be

  326. who we are now

  327. in every sense,

  328. perfected,

  329. flawless,

  330. sin-free,

  331. suffering-free,

  332. existence forever

  333. on that final day.

  334. A Christian

  335. is in Christ

  336. with all

  337. his benefits,

  338. even though

  339. it may take

  340. a lifetime

  341. to work those benefits

  342. out into our lives

  343. until we are

  344. finally glorified.

  345. All Christians,

  346. all Christians

  347. have every

  348. spiritual blessing

  349. in Christ.

  350. They're not two

  351. categories of Christian,

  352. the more spiritual

  353. and the less spiritual.

  354. Either you are a Christian

  355. or you're not a Christian.

  356. and every Christian

  357. has every

  358. spiritual blessing.

  359. If you're not a Christian,

  360. you have

  361. no

  362. spiritual

  363. blessings

  364. and all

  365. those blessings

  366. come from

  367. union with Christ,

  368. connected to Christ.

  369. Now,

  370. there's an interesting

  371. incident

  372. that happened

  373. during the

  374. Paris

  375. Peace Conference

  376. at the end

  377. of World War I.

  378. It went from

  379. 1919

  380. to 1920

  381. as they divided

  382. up the world,

  383. basically.

  384. The delegates

  385. which came

  386. from Arabia

  387. were astonished

  388. when they were

  389. staying in the

  390. hotel rooms

  391. in Paris.

  392. They were astonished

  393. by the instant

  394. and endless

  395. supply

  396. of water

  397. that came

  398. from these

  399. taps

  400. in the hotel

  401. rooms.

  402. They'd never

  403. experienced

  404. anything like

  405. that

  406. in the desert

  407. of Arabia.

  408. And so,

  409. as they prepared

  410. to leave

  411. the peace

  412. conference,

  413. some members

  414. of the delegation

  415. from Arabia

  416. were found

  417. trying to

  418. remove the

  419. taps

  420. from their

  421. hotel rooms

  422. to take them

  423. back and

  424. attach them

  425. to their

  426. tents

  427. in Arabia.

  428. and they

  429. thought

  430. that the

  431. magic of

  432. instant and

  433. endless water

  434. came from

  435. these taps.

  436. And T.E.

  437. Lawrence,

  438. Lawrence of

  439. Arabia,

  440. for those who

  441. don't know,

  442. he was acting

  443. as advisor

  444. and translator

  445. for the

  446. delegation.

  447. He had to

  448. explain to

  449. them that

  450. the taps

  451. themselves

  452. have no,

  453. there's no

  454. water that

  455. comes instantly

  456. from the

  457. taps.

  458. They are

  459. connected

  460. through pipes

  461. and reservoirs

  462. in order to

  463. get to the

  464. water.

  465. And friends,

  466. we have no

  467. spiritual blessing

  468. unless we are

  469. connected to

  470. Jesus by

  471. faith.

  472. United to

  473. Christ,

  474. union with

  475. Christ,

  476. in Christ,

  477. is who the

  478. Christian is.

  479. And every

  480. spiritual blessing

  481. flows from

  482. that and

  483. continues to

  484. flow from

  485. that.

  486. The word

  487. every means

  488. it would in

  489. fact to be

  490. impossible

  491. to list

  492. all of

  493. those blessings.

  494. Although Paul

  495. does mention

  496. some in

  497. this sentence,

  498. even this

  499. list is

  500. overwhelming

  501. in its

  502. implications.

  503. Verse 5,

  504. verse 7,

  505. verse 8,

  506. adopted,

  507. forgiveness,

  508. lavish with

  509. wisdom and

  510. understanding,

  511. the mystery of

  512. the Holy

  513. Spirit,

  514. guaranteed,

  515. every one of

  516. those blessings

  517. is staggering,

  518. staggering enough

  519. in its

  520. richness by

  521. itself.

  522. And they

  523. have many

  524. arms to

  525. them,

  526. each one.

  527. For instance,

  528. verse 5,

  529. let me just

  530. have a couple

  531. here,

  532. adoption to

  533. sonship.

  534. In Jesus

  535. Christ,

  536. God becomes

  537. our father

  538. as we are

  539. included into

  540. his family.

  541. family.

  542. And one

  543. implication of

  544. that fatherhood

  545. is that we

  546. have access to

  547. him as his

  548. much-loved

  549. children.

  550. There's one

  551. very famous

  552. photo of

  553. John F.

  554. Kennedy when

  555. he was

  556. president of

  557. the United

  558. States.

  559. His young

  560. son,

  561. John Junior,

  562. was playing

  563. under his

  564. desk, the

  565. resolute desk,

  566. in the Oval

  567. Office while he

  568. was meeting

  569. with officials

  570. in the Oval

  571. Office.

  572. I'm not

  573. allowed to

  574. do that

  575. with Donald

  576. Trump.

  577. Not that

  578. necessarily I

  579. want to,

  580. but no one's

  581. allowed to do

  582. that.

  583. Of course,

  584. Donald Trump

  585. went and

  586. redid that

  587. photo with

  588. his grandson

  589. under the

  590. desk, just

  591. so that he

  592. can go down

  593. to history

  594. as well.

  595. But if I

  596. just decide

  597. to do

  598. that, I'd

  599. be stopped.

  600. If I ran

  601. towards the

  602. president, I'd

  603. be shut if

  604. the Secret

  605. Service is

  606. working.

  607. As a

  608. child of

  609. God, we

  610. have access

  611. to God

  612. without

  613. appointments,

  614. free access

  615. to the

  616. creator of

  617. the universe,

  618. and we

  619. can boldly

  620. run into

  621. his arms.

  622. He is our

  623. father.

  624. Adoption

  625. also means

  626. inheritance,

  627. which is

  628. why here

  629. in this

  630. verse,

  631. it's

  632. why the

  633. emphasis

  634. is

  635. specific

  636. that we

  637. are being

  638. adopted

  639. as

  640. sons of

  641. God.

  642. Not sons

  643. and daughters,

  644. sons.

  645. You know,

  646. Paul,

  647. a bit more

  648. inclusive

  649. language.

  650. The word

  651. sons is

  652. inclusive

  653. language.

  654. In the

  655. culture that

  656. Paul is

  657. writing into

  658. here,

  659. only sons

  660. could be

  661. heirs and

  662. inherit the

  663. estate of

  664. the

  665. father.

  666. And what

  667. it's saying

  668. here is

  669. that as

  670. adopted,

  671. all people,

  672. male,

  673. female,

  674. know who

  675. you are,

  676. whatever

  677. culture you

  678. are,

  679. as you

  680. adopted

  681. into the

  682. family,

  683. as you

  684. inherit the

  685. family,

  686. you are

  687. co-heirs of

  688. the future

  689. with Christ.

  690. Whoever you

  691. are,

  692. co-heirs.

  693. We don't know

  694. completely what

  695. that means,

  696. but Jesus

  697. says the

  698. meek will

  699. inherit the

  700. earth.

  701. Adoption also

  702. means security.

  703. If you're an

  704. employee,

  705. how long does

  706. an employer

  707. put up with

  708. your bad

  709. behaviour and

  710. your failures?

  711. Everyone has

  712. their limit,

  713. I suppose.

  714. But how long

  715. does a parent

  716. put up with

  717. the waywardness

  718. of a child?

  719. Kind of

  720. forever in

  721. one way or

  722. another.

  723. Carried in

  724. their heart

  725. all of their

  726. life.

  727. God is

  728. our father

  729. and we

  730. are secure

  731. in his

  732. love.

  733. That's

  734. adoption to

  735. sons and

  736. you could

  737. just unpack

  738. that more

  739. and more.

  740. But the

  741. pride of

  742. place here

  743. is redemption.

  744. In verse

  745. seven we are

  746. told,

  747. in him we

  748. have

  749. redemption.

  750. Now

  751. redemption

  752. is a

  753. loaded

  754. word.

  755. It's

  756. interchangeable

  757. with the

  758. word

  759. ransom,

  760. which is

  761. a little

  762. bit more

  763. than

  764. paying a

  765. debt.

  766. Redemption

  767. is a

  768. little bit

  769. more than

  770. paying a

  771. debt.

  772. For

  773. instance,

  774. in New

  775. South

  776. Wales,

  777. there are

  778. certain

  779. violations

  780. that you

  781. could do

  782. which would

  783. mean that

  784. your car

  785. would be

  786. impounded.

  787. Certain

  788. violations.

  789. Your car

  790. would be

  791. towed and

  792. locked away

  793. and it

  794. would be

  795. locked away

  796. until you

  797. paid the

  798. fines.

  799. And when

  800. you pay

  801. the fine,

  802. whatever is

  803. owed,

  804. when you

  805. pay the

  806. fine,

  807. your car

  808. gets released

  809. from

  810. captivity.

  811. It's not

  812. just paying

  813. a debt,

  814. it's paying

  815. the debt

  816. so that you

  817. might be

  818. released from

  819. captivity.

  820. You

  821. liberate it.

  822. Now,

  823. Indian

  824. lawyer and

  825. activist

  826. Mahatma Gandhi

  827. said that,

  828. quite interestingly,

  829. and I would

  830. agree with him

  831. on this,

  832. that both

  833. Eastern and

  834. Western

  835. religions

  836. agree that

  837. every human

  838. being is

  839. not free.

  840. All

  841. humanity

  842. is

  843. enslaved.

  844. And Gandhi

  845. said,

  846. we are

  847. slaves to

  848. selfishness

  849. and the

  850. ego,

  851. which is a

  852. great description

  853. of what the

  854. Bible calls

  855. sin.

  856. We are

  857. always

  858. grasping at

  859. things because

  860. our egos

  861. are so

  862. needy.

  863. We're

  864. grasping at

  865. power and

  866. money and

  867. beauty and

  868. status and

  869. popularity and

  870. recognition because

  871. our egos are

  872. so needy.

  873. And Gandhi

  874. went on to

  875. say that

  876. Christianity

  877. helps because

  878. in Jesus,

  879. and Gandhi was

  880. not a

  881. Christian at

  882. all,

  883. Christianity

  884. helps because

  885. he says,

  886. in Jesus,

  887. we have a

  888. way to be

  889. free from

  890. the selfishness

  891. and egocentricity

  892. that enslaves

  893. us purely

  894. by the

  895. example of

  896. Jesus.

  897. And so

  898. for him,

  899. the Sermon

  900. of the

  901. Mount was

  902. the pinnacle

  903. of Christian

  904. teaching.

  905. And so

  906. for him,

  907. Jesus was

  908. the ultimate

  909. example of

  910. nonviolence to

  911. which he

  912. modelled his

  913. life on.

  914. He's the

  915. ultimate

  916. example of

  917. giving up a

  918. power and

  919. wealth and

  920. influence and

  921. the ultimate

  922. example of

  923. sacrificial service

  924. of others.

  925. And he

  926. suggested that

  927. when we see

  928. Jesus

  929. forgiving,

  930. loving,

  931. serving,

  932. dying for

  933. others,

  934. it will move

  935. us and

  936. liberate us

  937. from our

  938. selfishness and

  939. our ego.

  940. Now,

  941. with all due

  942. respect to

  943. Gandhi for

  944. his accomplishments

  945. in life and

  946. I respect

  947. them,

  948. he missed

  949. Christianity.

  950. He missed

  951. the point of

  952. it all.

  953. You see,

  954. seeing the

  955. amazing life

  956. of Jesus

  957. and trying

  958. to live up

  959. to that,

  960. it will crush

  961. you,

  962. make you feel

  963. worse than you

  964. already feel about

  965. yourself.

  966. Trying to

  967. be him

  968. would end up

  969. crushing us

  970. under the

  971. weight of

  972. expectations that

  973. we can never

  974. meet.

  975. We would be

  976. cursed,

  977. not blessed.

  978. We don't

  979. need someone to

  980. live up to,

  981. we need someone

  982. to liberate us,

  983. to redeem us,

  984. to set us

  985. free.

  986. and that

  987. is at the

  988. centre of

  989. God's plan

  990. to bless.

  991. And the

  992. key that

  993. unlocks

  994. every

  995. spiritual

  996. blessing

  997. is verse

  998. seven.

  999. In him

  1000. we have

  1001. redemption

  1002. through his

  1003. blood,

  1004. the forgiveness

  1005. of sins.

  1006. You see,

  1007. if I see

  1008. Jesus Christ

  1009. loving,

  1010. forgiving,

  1011. serving,

  1012. dying,

  1013. not for

  1014. others,

  1015. but for

  1016. me,

  1017. doing all

  1018. of that

  1019. in my

  1020. place,

  1021. that's

  1022. entirely

  1023. different.

  1024. Jesus

  1025. Christ,

  1026. God the

  1027. Son,

  1028. came to

  1029. earth and

  1030. took on

  1031. human flesh.

  1032. He sided

  1033. with us

  1034. so that

  1035. he could

  1036. represent us

  1037. to God.

  1038. not only

  1039. took on

  1040. our

  1041. identity,

  1042. he took

  1043. on our

  1044. sin.

  1045. He died

  1046. on a

  1047. Roman cross

  1048. to pay

  1049. the debt

  1050. that we

  1051. owe to

  1052. God for

  1053. our

  1054. egocentricity.

  1055. The debt

  1056. that keeps

  1057. us enslaved

  1058. to ourselves,

  1059. captive to

  1060. ourselves.

  1061. And in

  1062. paying that

  1063. debt he

  1064. has set us

  1065. free,

  1066. he's

  1067. redeemed

  1068. us,

  1069. he has

  1070. ransomed

  1071. us back

  1072. into

  1073. relationship

  1074. with God,

  1075. part of

  1076. his bride

  1077. for his

  1078. son,

  1079. his church,

  1080. his plan.

  1081. The

  1082. limitless

  1083. God

  1084. became

  1085. limited

  1086. to human

  1087. flesh,

  1088. nailed

  1089. fast

  1090. to a

  1091. Roman

  1092. cross,

  1093. enclosed

  1094. in a

  1095. tomb

  1096. to set

  1097. us

  1098. free.

  1099. to pay

  1100. our

  1101. debt

  1102. he

  1103. was

  1104. cursed

  1105. so that

  1106. we might

  1107. be blessed.

  1108. And why

  1109. would he

  1110. bother to

  1111. do that?

  1112. Why?

  1113. Because we

  1114. were the

  1115. best option

  1116. as a bride

  1117. for his

  1118. son when

  1119. he looked

  1120. at all

  1121. of humanity?

  1122. No.

  1123. Verse 4,

  1124. in love

  1125. he

  1126. predestines

  1127. us.

  1128. Verse 7,

  1129. we have

  1130. redemption

  1131. in accordance

  1132. with the

  1133. riches of

  1134. his grace.

  1135. Verse 9,

  1136. he may

  1137. know to

  1138. us the

  1139. mystery of

  1140. his will

  1141. according

  1142. to his

  1143. good

  1144. pleasure.

  1145. All

  1146. because of

  1147. his love,

  1148. his grace,

  1149. his pleasure.

  1150. which brings

  1151. me to

  1152. us and

  1153. where we

  1154. are and

  1155. as we

  1156. think about

  1157. our future

  1158. together.

  1159. Receiving

  1160. every

  1161. spiritual

  1162. blessing in

  1163. God's

  1164. grace to

  1165. us in

  1166. the Lord

  1167. Jesus has

  1168. a profound

  1169. impact on

  1170. your life.

  1171. You spend

  1172. the rest of

  1173. your life

  1174. realizing

  1175. this blessing

  1176. by working

  1177. it into

  1178. your heart

  1179. until it

  1180. shapes

  1181. who you

  1182. are by

  1183. conforming

  1184. you to

  1185. the image

  1186. of the

  1187. bridegroom.

  1188. And these

  1189. verses give

  1190. us one

  1191. important way

  1192. that it

  1193. changes us.

  1194. One important

  1195. way.

  1196. We're going

  1197. to see more

  1198. changes as we

  1199. go through

  1200. the rest of

  1201. Ephesians.

  1202. But

  1203. verse 6,

  1204. to the

  1205. praise of

  1206. his glorious

  1207. grace.

  1208. Verse 12,

  1209. for the

  1210. praise of

  1211. his glory.

  1212. Verse 14,

  1213. for the

  1214. praise of

  1215. his glory.

  1216. When

  1217. you have

  1218. every

  1219. spiritual

  1220. blessing

  1221. through

  1222. Jesus

  1223. in

  1224. Christ,

  1225. you don't

  1226. just

  1227. assent to

  1228. believe that

  1229. in your

  1230. mind.

  1231. It

  1232. becomes

  1233. glorious

  1234. to you.

  1235. It

  1236. becomes

  1237. praiseworthy

  1238. to you.

  1239. In other

  1240. words,

  1241. you move

  1242. from

  1243. praising

  1244. and seeking

  1245. the glory

  1246. of self

  1247. and your

  1248. egocentricity,

  1249. working for

  1250. that,

  1251. and you

  1252. turn beyond

  1253. yourself to

  1254. praise his

  1255. glorious grace.

  1256. God

  1257. in other

  1258. words,

  1259. what it

  1260. means is

  1261. as

  1262. God

  1263. looks at

  1264. his

  1265. church,

  1266. the bride

  1267. for his

  1268. son,

  1269. and says,

  1270. it is

  1271. beautiful

  1272. to me,

  1273. you

  1274. look to

  1275. God

  1276. and his

  1277. son and

  1278. you say,

  1279. he is

  1280. beautiful

  1281. to me.

  1282. He

  1283. has

  1284. captured

  1285. my

  1286. heart.

  1287. He

  1288. captures

  1289. my

  1290. imagination.

  1291. You

  1292. praise

  1293. his

  1294. grace,

  1295. you

  1296. lift

  1297. your

  1298. voice

  1299. and

  1300. you

  1301. sing.

  1302. You

  1303. see,

  1304. this is

  1305. not just

  1306. evidence

  1307. of having

  1308. received

  1309. every

  1310. spiritual

  1311. blessing,

  1312. but it's

  1313. also the

  1314. way that

  1315. every

  1316. spiritual

  1317. blessing

  1318. works its

  1319. way into

  1320. your

  1321. life.

  1322. Praising

  1323. the glory

  1324. of his

  1325. grace

  1326. in every

  1327. aspect of

  1328. life.

  1329. Is there

  1330. nothing more

  1331. beautiful?

  1332. Is there

  1333. nothing more

  1334. captivating for

  1335. the human

  1336. heart?

  1337. Nothing

  1338. more glorious?

  1339. Nothing

  1340. more powerful?

  1341. Nothing

  1342. more moving?

  1343. than someone

  1344. giving their

  1345. life for

  1346. others.

  1347. It's

  1348. in whatever

  1349. culture you

  1350. come from,

  1351. that is the

  1352. most powerful

  1353. narrative of

  1354. life.

  1355. We're

  1356. amazed by

  1357. the acts

  1358. of those

  1359. who intervened

  1360. at grace

  1361. risk to

  1362. their own

  1363. life to

  1364. save others

  1365. in the

  1366. recent

  1367. Bondi

  1368. massacre.

  1369. I'm amazed

  1370. by those who

  1371. jumped in the

  1372. water,

  1373. bloody water

  1374. to rescue

  1375. a shark,

  1376. attack

  1377. victim.

  1378. Amazed

  1379. by those

  1380. people who

  1381. do those

  1382. things.

  1383. And what

  1384. Jesus done

  1385. for us

  1386. to bless

  1387. us,

  1388. it was

  1389. not a

  1390. rush of

  1391. adrenaline.

  1392. It wasn't

  1393. a thoughtless

  1394. act.

  1395. It was

  1396. planned

  1397. before the

  1398. creation of

  1399. the world.

  1400. There is

  1401. no more

  1402. powerful

  1403. narrative

  1404. structure,

  1405. there is

  1406. no more

  1407. powerful

  1408. moral

  1409. beauty

  1410. than

  1411. sacrificial

  1412. love.

  1413. Especially

  1414. a patient

  1415. plan flowing

  1416. from the

  1417. heart of

  1418. God in

  1419. what Jesus

  1420. done for

  1421. us before

  1422. he even

  1423. created

  1424. anything.

  1425. Jesus

  1426. did all

  1427. of it

  1428. to secure

  1429. us for

  1430. the

  1431. eternal

  1432. blessing,

  1433. glory,

  1434. and love

  1435. that is

  1436. his,

  1437. that we

  1438. might share

  1439. in it.

  1440. And those

  1441. blessings

  1442. change the

  1443. driving center

  1444. of your

  1445. life.

  1446. It will

  1447. move you

  1448. so that the

  1449. things you

  1450. used to find

  1451. captivating no

  1452. longer drive

  1453. you,

  1454. no longer

  1455. captivate

  1456. you.

  1457. His

  1458. glorious

  1459. grace will

  1460. captivate

  1461. you,

  1462. capture

  1463. you,

  1464. it will

  1465. lift your

  1466. heart to

  1467. praise.

  1468. And you

  1469. will start

  1470. to see that

  1471. his plan to

  1472. work all

  1473. things through

  1474. his church

  1475. is beautiful.

  1476. And you'll

  1477. start to see

  1478. his church,

  1479. his bride,

  1480. in a

  1481. different way.

  1482. It will

  1483. become beautiful

  1484. to you in

  1485. such a way

  1486. that you'll

  1487. give yourself

  1488. to it.

  1489. Now one

  1490. gift the

  1491. Lord Jesus

  1492. has given

  1493. to his

  1494. body,

  1495. his bride,

  1496. his church,

  1497. was what we

  1498. call the

  1499. Lord's

  1500. Supper.

  1501. And in

  1502. the Lord's

  1503. Supper,

  1504. what it

  1505. does is it

  1506. reminds us

  1507. of the

  1508. cross of

  1509. Christ as

  1510. the place

  1511. of deliverance

  1512. for us,

  1513. the place

  1514. of redemption

  1515. for our

  1516. sin,

  1517. our death,

  1518. and from

  1519. hell.

  1520. It reminds

  1521. us of

  1522. God's

  1523. loving

  1524. plan

  1525. for us.

  1526. I'm going

  1527. to invite

  1528. those who

  1529. are serving

  1530. to distribute

  1531. that now

  1532. as I

  1533. continue.

  1534. You see,

  1535. when Jesus

  1536. celebrated his

  1537. last supper

  1538. with his

  1539. disciples,

  1540. what they

  1541. were celebrating

  1542. was the

  1543. Passover,

  1544. which God

  1545. had instituted

  1546. in the Old

  1547. Testament for

  1548. his people

  1549. to continue

  1550. celebrating.

  1551. and the

  1552. Passover

  1553. meal was

  1554. about

  1555. temporal

  1556. redemption,

  1557. temporal

  1558. deliverance

  1559. from captivity.

  1560. The

  1561. Lord's

  1562. Supper

  1563. in Jesus

  1564. points to

  1565. eternal

  1566. deliverance.

  1567. The

  1568. Passover

  1569. lamb had

  1570. to be

  1571. slaughtered

  1572. every year.

  1573. The

  1574. Lord's

  1575. Supper

  1576. points us

  1577. to the

  1578. Lord Jesus

  1579. who died

  1580. a sufficient

  1581. death for

  1582. all people

  1583. for all

  1584. time to

  1585. set us

  1586. free.

  1587. And so

  1588. what the

  1589. Lord's

  1590. Supper

  1591. does is

  1592. it radiates

  1593. with the

  1594. glory of

  1595. Christ

  1596. in his

  1597. flesh and

  1598. his blood.

  1599. And what it

  1600. does is it

  1601. causes us,

  1602. his bride,

  1603. to reflect

  1604. back to

  1605. when our

  1606. sins were

  1607. atoned

  1608. for

  1609. by our

  1610. bridegroom,

  1611. God's

  1612. spotless

  1613. lamb,

  1614. while also

  1615. looking forward,

  1616. causing us to

  1617. look forward

  1618. to the

  1619. great

  1620. marriage

  1621. supper of

  1622. the lamb

  1623. when we

  1624. shall

  1625. bask

  1626. together

  1627. in the

  1628. resplendent

  1629. glory of

  1630. the Father.

  1631. And these

  1632. simple elements

  1633. of these

  1634. wafers and

  1635. the juice

  1636. that we're

  1637. having this

  1638. morning,

  1639. as we

  1640. participate in

  1641. this and

  1642. as we

  1643. remember

  1644. Christ,

  1645. they become

  1646. a beautifying

  1647. influence on

  1648. us as it

  1649. demonstrates the

  1650. importance of

  1651. our remembering,

  1652. the importance

  1653. of our loving,

  1654. and the

  1655. importance of

  1656. our examining.

  1657. The Apostle

  1658. Paul repeated

  1659. the words of

  1660. Jesus when he

  1661. instructed the

  1662. Corinthian church

  1663. in the

  1664. Lord's

  1665. Supper,

  1666. do this

  1667. as often

  1668. as you

  1669. drink it

  1670. in remembrance

  1671. of me.

  1672. In other

  1673. words,

  1674. the supper

  1675. becomes a

  1676. path to

  1677. congregational

  1678. beauty as

  1679. we come

  1680. together and

  1681. remember our

  1682. bridegroom.

  1683. people.

  1684. And he

  1685. reminds the

  1686. Corinthians

  1687. again,

  1688. because there

  1689. is one

  1690. bread,

  1691. we who

  1692. are many

  1693. are one

  1694. body,

  1695. for we

  1696. all partake

  1697. in the

  1698. one bread.

  1699. What the

  1700. early church

  1701. did,

  1702. which we've

  1703. sort of

  1704. shut down

  1705. since COVID

  1706. unfortunately,

  1707. but what the

  1708. early church

  1709. did was they

  1710. passed around

  1711. one loaf of

  1712. bread amongst

  1713. the church,

  1714. and each

  1715. would pinch

  1716. off a small

  1717. piece of

  1718. bread to

  1719. celebrate the

  1720. Lord's

  1721. supper.

  1722. And through

  1723. that physical

  1724. representation,

  1725. the Apostle

  1726. Paul was

  1727. reminding you,

  1728. you are one

  1729. body, and

  1730. your body is

  1731. connected to

  1732. the bread of

  1733. life, Jesus,

  1734. your bridegroom.

  1735. And for this

  1736. type of mutual

  1737. love and

  1738. reconciliation to

  1739. be present in

  1740. the life of

  1741. the church,

  1742. that's what

  1743. we're doing as

  1744. we participate

  1745. in Christ.

  1746. And also,

  1747. it's also

  1748. calling us to

  1749. examine ourselves.

  1750. When he said

  1751. to the church

  1752. of Corinth,

  1753. whoever

  1754. therefore eats

  1755. the bread or

  1756. drinks the

  1757. cup of the

  1758. Lord in an

  1759. unmerthy manner

  1760. will be guilty

  1761. concerning the

  1762. body and blood

  1763. of the Lord.

  1764. So let's just

  1765. spend a moment

  1766. to examine

  1767. our hearts.

  1768. And I wonder

  1769. whether the

  1770. quote of Spurgeon

  1771. might be helpful

  1772. here once again.

  1773. Nothing in the

  1774. world is dearer

  1775. to God's heart

  1776. than his

  1777. church.

  1778. Therefore,

  1779. being his,

  1780. let us belong

  1781. to it,

  1782. that by our

  1783. prayers, our

  1784. gifts, and our

  1785. labours, we may

  1786. support and

  1787. strengthen it.

  1788. Is God's

  1789. plan in his

  1790. church beautiful

  1791. to you?

  1792. And is that

  1793. reflected in

  1794. your life?

  1795. Is his

  1796. church beautiful?

  1797. Thank you.
