  1. Well, what we've been seeing in Ephesians over the past number of weeks is who the church is

  2. ! From God's perspective, not from ours.

  3. What we've seen is the church is central to God's plan for history, to unite all things under Jesus Christ.

  4. It's a plan that he achieves through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

  5. It's a plan that's, in fact, being worked out right now through time and space, through his church,

  6. as both Jews and Gentiles, people from every tribe, language and nations, are united together under the Lord Jesus.

  7. That's really the summary of the first three chapters.

  8. What we're starting to see now is that Christianity isn't about giving ourselves a little boost to live a better life,

  9. a better version of the life that we're currently living.

  10. What we're seeing is that Christianity is nothing less than being a Christian,

  11. is nothing less than a sweeping revolution that changes every aspect of life.

  12. And this is what Paul is addressing in the opening verse in our section today,

  13. which is what he's already been doing since the beginning of chapter 4,

  14. where he says,

  15. What our topic today is, Paul's calling us here, is to be transformed.

  16. That is, to be who we already are.

  17. So, four points, which is going to be our progression today.

  18. First of all, already transformed.

  19. Now, the key to this whole section, and I'm really covering right through to chapter 5, verse 21,

  20. the key to the section is verses 22 and 24, putting off the old self and putting on the new self.

  21. Now, I need to get a little bit technical here for a moment, so just bear with me,

  22. because it's really, really important.

  23. I'm going to talk linguistics and language, and particularly in the original language of the New Testament,

  24. the Greek language, both verse 22 and 24 is in what is called the aorist tense.

  25. The verb there, to put on to put off, is in the aorist tense.

  26. Now, the aorist tense is not something the English language, or virtually any other language, understands.

  27. It doesn't, the aorist tense doesn't exist for English language.

  28. But what it means, what the aorist tense means for Greek language,

  29. is it's a single action that's happened in the past, that's finalised,

  30. but has ongoing implications for my very present.

  31. That's what the aorist tense means.

  32. And what that means is, when you look at verse 22 and verse 24, putting on and putting off,

  33. the Ephesians have already put off and have already put on.

  34. That's what it means.

  35. It's already happened.

  36. And what it means is, in the past, there's been a conscious, decisive decision that they've made.

  37. And it's been a decision to turn away from the old life, to take off the old life, like an old piece of garment,

  38. and to put on a new self.

  39. And what they've turned away from is described in verses 17 to 19.

  40. You must no longer live, as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.

  41. They are darkening their understanding and separated from the life of God,

  42. because of the ignorance that is in them, due to the hardening of their hearts,

  43. having lost all sensitivity.

  44. They have given themselves over to sensuality, so as to indulge in every kind of impurity.

  45. And they are full of greed.

  46. Now, what we have here in these verses is Paul's psychology of unbelief, of life without God.

  47. This is how our minds and our hearts work when they are separated from what Paul says here is the life in God,

  48. the life of God.

  49. It's a life that is marked by futility and vanity.

  50. It's a sense, if you like, of doing life, of an awful lot of work, doing an awful lot of things,

  51. and not actually getting anywhere.

  52. Of all of those things, still having a sense of hollowness to it all,

  53. not accomplishing anything.

  54. And this futility leads to verse 19.

  55. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality,

  56. so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

  57. This futility in life means that eventually we give ourselves over to things.

  58. Now, they are things like pleasures and activities and indulgences in life.

  59. They are things that, on the surface, might appear to be harmful and good for us,

  60. but all of those things are designed to soothe this sense of futility and vanity in life.

  61. They are things, you know, you might say things like, well, you know, life might be futile,

  62. but maybe it'd be better if I could run a marathon under three hours.

  63. And so that becomes the driving force of my life, or if I'm financially secure in retirement,

  64. or I've got more than 2,000 friends on Facebook, or I get an ATAR over 98,

  65. or my kids are happy, or I've got a career that I'm validated in,

  66. or that I've got the ability to have holidays wherever and whenever I want.

  67. And what it says here, all of those things become the markers for who we are,

  68. and it's designed to soothe this sense that my life is futile and a vanity.

  69. And then eventually it says we give ourselves to them.

  70. That is, we give ourselves over to them.

  71. In other words, that they become the controlling things in our life.

  72. They become the advantages of our life.

  73. And we need it more and more and more.

  74. I've achieved three hours marathon.

  75. Maybe two and a half would be better now.

  76. And it's a sense of I'm now controlled by the futility of life.

  77. And that goes on, and I get busier and busier and busier

  78. to try and hide the loud noise of futility that sits in my soul.

  79. Until something forces me to stop and be confronted with the vanity of my life.

  80. And that's what happened to the Ephesians in verses 20 and 22.

  81. That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ

  82. and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.

  83. You were taught with regard to your former way of life to put off your old self,

  84. which has been corrupted by its deceitful desires.

  85. Now, again, there are three, another three verbs in there that are also in the aorist tense.

  86. Decisive action in the past that's finished that is consequences for my present right now.

  87. And what Paul's saying there is they lived in the futility of their life until a radical decision happened

  88. and a radical change happened in their life.

  89. In Christian circles, we call it conversion.

  90. God calls it recreation.

  91. He calls it new birth.

  92. That's what Paul's referring to here.

  93. It revolves the rejection of our former self, a life without God,

  94. and the starting of an entire new life under and in God and under the lordship of Jesus.

  95. And verse 20, the three verbs are,

  96. you learned Christ, you heard Christ, and you were taught the truth that is in Christ.

  97. What happened to them in the past is that they heard about Christ.

  98. And then they heard the voice of Christ.

  99. And in so doing, they discovered the truth that is Jesus.

  100. And they turned from the old life to the new life.

  101. They discovered the truth of who he is and what he has done for them.

  102. And so what Paul's doing here in this first section is he's reminding the Ephesians here of their conversion,

  103. of the moment that they took off their old self and they put on their new self,

  104. when the truth of Jesus broke into their lives.

  105. And he says,

  106. you're already transformed.

  107. But notice that in verses 25 and onwards,

  108. and if you read to the end of chapter 5,

  109. and in fact,

  110. keep going really into chapter 6,

  111. there are various moral actions and behaviours

  112. that Paul is calling the Ephesian church,

  113. in fact,

  114. some to put off and equally others to put on.

  115. He's still calling them to put off and put on.

  116. But crucially,

  117. we need to understand that before you get to verse 25,

  118. verses 17 and 20 to 24 are there.

  119. They come first.

  120. Verses 22 and 24 talk about putting off the old self and putting on the new self,

  121. not about putting off old behaviours and putting on new behaviours.

  122. It's talking about the self,

  123. the person.

  124. Christianity,

  125. this is essential

  126. because way too many people get this wrong

  127. in the church and outside the church.

  128. Christianity is about being someone

  129. before it's doing something.

  130. First and foremost,

  131. it's about becoming a whole new self.

  132. It is a comprehensive revolution

  133. that changes who you are

  134. before it revolutionarily changes what you do and how you live.

  135. That's possibly the biggest

  136. and most common mistake people make about Christianity.

  137. morality

  138. is not Christianity.

  139. Even biblical morality

  140. is not Christianity.

  141. Christianity is not about becoming more moral.

  142. This is how most people look at it.

  143. And to be honest with you,

  144. I've,

  145. over more than three decades,

  146. I've had this conversation

  147. so many times with people

  148. and I'm confident

  149. that in my old life,

  150. I asked exactly the same questions.

  151. It goes something like this.

  152. Look, I'm interested in becoming a Christian,

  153. but I'm just wondering,

  154. if I do become a Christian,

  155. do I need to stop having sex

  156. with my married co-worker?

  157. Like, will I need to do that?

  158. I'm just weighing up here,

  159. you know,

  160. will I have to give money away?

  161. Do I need to do that?

  162. Do I need to come to church at all?

  163. Do I have to forgive my parents

  164. for not giving me the Porsche

  165. on my 18th birthday?

  166. Because I haven't spoken to them for 10 years.

  167. Like, do I need to do that?

  168. Now,

  169. the answer is,

  170. well,

  171. yes,

  172. ultimately,

  173. in fact,

  174. you'll see all of those behaviours

  175. mentioned,

  176. not in the details I just gave,

  177. but you'll see them there

  178. eventually,

  179. but let me just say,

  180. you've asked me the wrong questions

  181. and you've got in Christianity

  182. entirely wrong.

  183. Entirely wrong.

  184. Becoming a Christian

  185. is about becoming a new person

  186. before you live

  187. with a new set of behaviours

  188. and attitudes.

  189. You haven't understood

  190. what Christianity actually is

  191. in asking those questions.

  192. That's the first point.

  193. Already transformed.

  194. Secondly,

  195. verse 25 says,

  196. it starts with,

  197. therefore.

  198. And so what follows

  199. is the implications

  200. of the very fact

  201. that they have already

  202. taken off

  203. and have put on.

  204. Therefore,

  205. because you have made

  206. the decision

  207. to throw off

  208. your old self

  209. once and for all,

  210. you must now

  211. put on

  212. all conduct.

  213. so you must continue

  214. to put off

  215. all conduct

  216. that belongs

  217. to the old self.

  218. Throw it away.

  219. And the point here

  220. as we move on

  221. is this new self

  222. that we have taken on,

  223. all of its behaviours

  224. and attitudes,

  225. you do not

  226. naturally

  227. drift

  228. into it.

  229. doesn't just happen.

  230. We must actively

  231. put it on.

  232. Chapter 4,

  233. verse 1,

  234. which Ash

  235. took us to last week,

  236. calls us,

  237. the Christian,

  238. to live worthy

  239. of the kingdom

  240. that we've been

  241. called into.

  242. Verse 17 says,

  243. stop living

  244. the old life.

  245. Chapter 5,

  246. verse 3

  247. refers to the old life

  248. being in brother

  249. for God's people.

  250. Instead,

  251. he calls us

  252. in chapter 5,

  253. verse 1 and 2,

  254. follow God's example

  255. therefore

  256. as dearly loved children

  257. and walk

  258. in the way

  259. of love

  260. just as Christ

  261. loved us

  262. and gave himself

  263. up for us

  264. as a fragrant

  265. offering and sacrifice

  266. to God.

  267. Ephesians 2,

  268. which I was,

  269. took us there

  270. a number of weeks

  271. ago now,

  272. says that

  273. the very essence

  274. of the old life

  275. of sin

  276. is a life

  277. which is centered

  278. entirely on me.

  279. It's a life

  280. where everything

  281. exists for my glory,

  282. where my heart

  283. is curved

  284. towards myself.

  285. It's a life

  286. fundamentally

  287. that is selfish,

  288. no matter how

  289. we cover it up

  290. and make it look good.

  291. That's the old self

  292. and what we see here,

  293. the new self

  294. and all its behaviors

  295. and attitudes

  296. is the exact opposite.

  297. it's a life

  298. as chapter 5

  299. tells us there,

  300. a life of love.

  301. It's a life

  302. of personal

  303. sacrifice,

  304. of giving

  305. and serving

  306. and forgiving.

  307. In fact,

  308. everything

  309. that's listed here

  310. is about

  311. building

  312. relationships,

  313. loving

  314. others.

  315. Third point,

  316. how do we do that

  317. then?

  318. How to be transformed,

  319. how to continue

  320. to be transformed.

  321. I want to spend

  322. a bit of time

  323. on this one

  324. because,

  325. frankly,

  326. we all want

  327. to change

  328. and

  329. it's one of the

  330. preoccupations,

  331. in fact,

  332. of our

  333. society

  334. and yet

  335. we always

  336. struggle

  337. to change.

  338. It's one of the

  339. things we kick

  340. ourselves for,

  341. how quickly

  342. we have

  343. New Year's Eve

  344. resolutions

  345. and

  346. 90-something

  347. percent

  348. fail

  349. before the

  350. end of January.

  351. Struggle

  352. to change.

  353. So,

  354. the first thing

  355. we need to do,

  356. there's three points

  357. here,

  358. and the first thing

  359. is we need

  360. a new motive,

  361. a different motive

  362. to change.

  363. that is what

  364. it's saying

  365. is that

  366. the reason

  367. why we

  368. do things

  369. is critical.

  370. It matters

  371. critically.

  372. Why we do

  373. the things

  374. we do

  375. absolutely

  376. matters.

  377. It matters

  378. so much

  379. because it's

  380. in fact

  381. possible

  382. to do

  383. the entirely

  384. right things

  385. to do,

  386. to even

  387. live with

  388. Christian morality

  389. and to

  390. do it

  391. for the

  392. wrong

  393. reasons.

  394. For

  395. instance,

  396. let's

  397. take

  398. raising

  399. children.

  400. And you

  401. want to

  402. raise your

  403. child to

  404. be truthful.

  405. The main

  406. ways that

  407. we raise

  408. children

  409. ethically

  410. and say,

  411. for instance,

  412. in the issue

  413. of truth,

  414. the main

  415. ways we

  416. do that

  417. is through

  418. fear

  419. or pride.

  420. Fear or

  421. pride,

  422. or maybe

  423. a combination

  424. of both.

  425. Fear says

  426. something like

  427. this,

  428. you better

  429. tell the

  430. truth or

  431. I'll

  432. punish you.

  433. Liars,

  434. or God

  435. will be

  436. angry with

  437. you,

  438. or even

  439. take it

  440. even further,

  441. all liars

  442. go to

  443. hell.

  444. Or you're

  445. going to get

  446. found out,

  447. and if you

  448. get found

  449. out, people

  450. won't trust

  451. you, they

  452. won't like

  453. you.

  454. That's

  455. fear.

  456. pride says

  457. something like,

  458. oh, awful

  459. people lie.

  460. Awful, awful

  461. people lie.

  462. Truthful people

  463. are good

  464. people, but

  465. awful people

  466. are bad,

  467. bad people.

  468. God will

  469. bless you if

  470. you tell the

  471. truth.

  472. truth.

  473. And so

  474. what happens

  475. in that

  476. moment is

  477. an external

  478. pressure for

  479. fear or

  480. pride.

  481. Fear, I

  482. don't want to

  483. get caught, I

  484. don't want to

  485. be punished.

  486. Pride, I

  487. don't want to

  488. be like the

  489. awful people,

  490. and if I'm

  491. not like the

  492. awful people,

  493. therefore I'm

  494. a good

  495. person.

  496. Fear and

  497. pride.

  498. External

  499. pressures to

  500. tell the

  501. truth.

  502. And the

  503. reason

  504. the reason

  505. I will

  506. tell the

  507. truth is

  508. because I'm

  509. motivated by

  510. self-interest.

  511. That's the

  512. reason I do

  513. it.

  514. It's about

  515. me.

  516. It's got

  517. nothing to

  518. do with

  519. damaging the

  520. life of the

  521. person that I'm

  522. lying to.

  523. It's got

  524. nothing to

  525. do with

  526. whether it

  527. honors God

  528. or not.

  529. It's about

  530. me.

  531. And it's

  532. no different

  533. than Ephesians

  534. 2 and my

  535. life being

  536. curved in

  537. on myself.

  538. And so I

  539. pursue

  540. Christian

  541. morality for

  542. my sake.

  543. And that

  544. works for a

  545. little while.

  546. But then

  547. there's a

  548. time when

  549. telling the

  550. truth doesn't

  551. work for me

  552. because there's

  553. something else

  554. that's even

  555. more valuable

  556. to me in my

  557. identity.

  558. And that

  559. might be,

  560. for instance,

  561. being rich.

  562. rich.

  563. And so

  564. when the

  565. opportunity

  566. presents

  567. itself,

  568. I will

  569. lie,

  570. I will

  571. falsify,

  572. I will

  573. embezzle.

  574. And if I

  575. ever get

  576. caught out in

  577. that moment

  578. for doing

  579. those things,

  580. I go,

  581. I don't know

  582. what happened

  583. to me.

  584. This is not

  585. who I am.

  586. I'm not a

  587. liar.

  588. I was not

  589. brought up

  590. to be a

  591. liar.

  592. And the

  593. answer to

  594. that is,

  595. well,

  596. of course

  597. you are.

  598. Of course

  599. you were

  600. brought up

  601. to lie.

  602. You were

  603. brought up

  604. to make

  605. everything about

  606. you,

  607. and that is

  608. why you've

  609. embezzled.

  610. It's why

  611. you've lied.

  612. It's why

  613. you're

  614. falsified.

  615. You've been

  616. practicing

  617. new self

  618. behaviors out

  619. of an old

  620. self heart.

  621. And it's

  622. been working

  623. for a little

  624. while.

  625. But ultimately

  626. it doesn't.

  627. And there

  628. are churches

  629. all over

  630. this country

  631. right now,

  632. like this

  633. one,

  634. meeting,

  635. and there

  636. are people

  637. sitting beside

  638. each other

  639. in those

  640. churches,

  641. living with

  642. the same

  643. moral frameworks,

  644. but doing

  645. it for

  646. entirely

  647. different

  648. reasons.

  649. Entirely

  650. different

  651. reasons.

  652. There are

  653. those who

  654. are doing

  655. it because

  656. they hope

  657. God approves

  658. of them in

  659. the end,

  660. or because

  661. it makes

  662. them feel

  663. superior to

  664. those who

  665. are not

  666. living the

  667. way they're

  668. living,

  669. fear and

  670. pride.

  671. And there

  672. are those

  673. who are

  674. doing it

  675. simply out

  676. of gratitude.

  677. for God's

  678. grace

  679. in Jesus

  680. Christ,

  681. taking them

  682. from darkness

  683. to light,

  684. from death

  685. to life,

  686. from the

  687. old self

  688. to the

  689. new self,

  690. and so

  691. they're doing

  692. the life

  693. they're doing,

  694. they're living

  695. the life,

  696. they have the

  697. behaviours,

  698. they're just

  699. out of joy,

  700. out of joy.

  701. So that's

  702. the first

  703. thing we

  704. need to

  705. change,

  706. to really

  707. change,

  708. and that's

  709. a different

  710. motive from

  711. the heart,

  712. an internal

  713. motive as

  714. opposed to

  715. external

  716. compliance.

  717. The second

  718. source of

  719. this new,

  720. and the

  721. second thing,

  722. and I think

  723. it's the

  724. source of

  725. this new

  726. motive,

  727. is we need

  728. a new

  729. identity.

  730. We've seen

  731. that we've

  732. been made

  733. an entirely

  734. new person

  735. in Jesus

  736. Christ.

  737. Chapter 5,

  738. verse 1,

  739. is the

  740. Christian's

  741. new identity.

  742. Follow God's

  743. example,

  744. therefore,

  745. as dearly

  746. loved

  747. children.

  748. Verse 3,

  749. his holy

  750. people.

  751. Verse 8,

  752. you are his

  753. children.

  754. Light

  755. in the

  756. Lord,

  757. which means

  758. in

  759. Christ,

  760. you are

  761. light,

  762. not dark.

  763. You've

  764. been

  765. forgiven

  766. and made

  767. new in

  768. him.

  769. That is,

  770. God has

  771. loved us,

  772. he has

  773. chosen us,

  774. he has

  775. called us,

  776. he has

  777. forgiven us,

  778. he's

  779. redeemed us,

  780. he's filled

  781. us,

  782. he's changing

  783. us,

  784. and one

  785. day he

  786. will glorify

  787. us.

  788. The

  789. almighty

  790. God,

  791. who alone

  792. is holy,

  793. who is

  794. all-powerful,

  795. who is

  796. perfect,

  797. he has

  798. set his

  799. unconditional,

  800. undeserved,

  801. sacrificial,

  802. adopting,

  803. redeeming love,

  804. on you,

  805. the Christian.

  806. And it

  807. is

  808. all a

  809. gift.

  810. Not one

  811. moral act

  812. on your

  813. behalf

  814. has caused

  815. him to

  816. turn his

  817. face towards

  818. you.

  819. Not one

  820. positive good

  821. thing that

  822. you've done

  823. has made

  824. him approve

  825. of you.

  826. it is

  827. all about

  828. him and

  829. his

  830. perfection

  831. and

  832. desiring

  833. to impute

  834. it to

  835. us,

  836. to give

  837. it to

  838. us as

  839. a gift.

  840. And he

  841. knows

  842. already

  843. the darkness

  844. of the

  845. heart,

  846. the hardness

  847. of the

  848. heart,

  849. the greed,

  850. the debauchery,

  851. the impurity.

  852. He knows

  853. it all.

  854. And yet

  855. he's still

  856. set his

  857. face towards

  858. us,

  859. designed

  860. to love

  861. and to

  862. take us

  863. from old

  864. to new.

  865. And it's

  866. because of

  867. who the

  868. gift giver

  869. is,

  870. in his

  871. sovereign

  872. grace,

  873. what he

  874. has set

  875. his face

  876. towards us,

  877. his love

  878. in determining

  879. us that we

  880. are his

  881. children,

  882. that will

  883. never

  884. change.

  885. That will

  886. never

  887. change.

  888. As I

  889. said to my

  890. group on

  891. Friday night,

  892. there is

  893. no sin

  894. so small

  895. that it's

  896. not eternally

  897. damnable.

  898. And there

  899. is no sin

  900. so great

  901. that it's

  902. not eternally

  903. forgivable.

  904. you see,

  905. deep and

  906. enduring

  907. change in

  908. life comes

  909. from an

  910. internal

  911. motive,

  912. and the

  913. only

  914. energizing

  915. motive is

  916. an entirely

  917. new

  918. identity.

  919. And as

  920. we grow to

  921. understand who

  922. we are as

  923. his children,

  924. it will

  925. shape our

  926. hearts in

  927. such a

  928. way,

  929. change our

  930. motives in

  931. such a

  932. way that we

  933. will take

  934. on his

  935. new

  936. framework of

  937. life in

  938. determining what

  939. is right and

  940. what is wrong,

  941. what is good and

  942. what is bad for

  943. my life.

  944. And we will

  945. live into

  946. that.

  947. so where do

  948. you get your

  949. ethical framework

  950. from?

  951. Where does it

  952. come from?

  953. TV,

  954. family,

  955. your culture,

  956. friends,

  957. social media,

  958. maybe it's just

  959. a vibe,

  960. a feeling.

  961. Like Donald

  962. Trump said,

  963. the war in Iran

  964. will end when I,

  965. he said,

  966. I'll feel it

  967. in my bones.

  968. Maybe that's

  969. it.

  970. It feels the

  971. right thing to

  972. do.

  973. I mean,

  974. I laugh at

  975. that,

  976. but that is

  977. the current

  978. young generation.

  979. It feels like

  980. the right thing

  981. to do.

  982. Or is it

  983. God and

  984. his word?

  985. You see,

  986. it's not

  987. until the

  988. source of

  989. right and

  990. wrong shifts

  991. to God's

  992. word do we

  993. actually change.

  994. And it shifts

  995. because of our

  996. new identity.

  997. identity.

  998. Our new

  999. identity

  1000. is shading

  1001. a new

  1002. motive.

  1003. There's a

  1004. parallel passage

  1005. to this,

  1006. Ephesians

  1007. passage,

  1008. in the

  1009. book of

  1010. Colossians.

  1011. Paul also

  1012. wrote that.

  1013. Chapter 3,

  1014. verse 16,

  1015. Paul writes,

  1016. let the word

  1017. of God dwell

  1018. in you

  1019. richly.

  1020. Now,

  1021. what he's

  1022. saying there

  1023. in Colossians

  1024. 3.16,

  1025. it's not

  1026. just,

  1027. oh,

  1028. you know,

  1029. read the

  1030. Bible.

  1031. He's not

  1032. just simply

  1033. saying here,

  1034. read the

  1035. Bible,

  1036. you know,

  1037. a chapter

  1038. a day will

  1039. keep the

  1040. devil away

  1041. kind of

  1042. stuff,

  1043. keep God

  1044. happy.

  1045. It's in

  1046. fact having

  1047. God's

  1048. word imminently

  1049. !

  1050. present in

  1051. your heart,

  1052. the driving

  1053. center of

  1054. your life

  1055. through your

  1056. mind.

  1057. It's pushing

  1058. the reality

  1059. of God's

  1060. word down

  1061. into the

  1062. very center

  1063. and the

  1064. driving

  1065. being of

  1066. my life.

  1067. So let's

  1068. go back

  1069. to Ephesians

  1070. now.

  1071. Remember

  1072. I said

  1073. Ephesians

  1074. verse 22

  1075. and 24

  1076. were in

  1077. the what

  1078. tense?

  1079. The

  1080. aorist

  1081. tense.

  1082. A single

  1083. past action

  1084. that's

  1085. completed

  1086. with present

  1087. consequences.

  1088. I've already

  1089. taken off

  1090. the old

  1091. self,

  1092. already put

  1093. on the

  1094. new

  1095. self.

  1096. In the

  1097. middle of

  1098. verses 22

  1099. and 24

  1100. logically is

  1101. verse 23

  1102. as it

  1103. happens.

  1104. And

  1105. verse 23

  1106. is how

  1107. we consistently

  1108. take off

  1109. the old

  1110. and put

  1111. on the

  1112. new.

  1113. Verse 23

  1114. is how

  1115. it happens.

  1116. And

  1117. verse 23

  1118. is not

  1119. in the

  1120. aorist

  1121. tense.

  1122. It's

  1123. in,

  1124. for those

  1125. with pens

  1126. you might

  1127. want to

  1128. write this

  1129. down,

  1130. don't,

  1131. because it

  1132. probably won't

  1133. mean anything

  1134. to you

  1135. anyway.

  1136. Verse 23

  1137. is in

  1138. what is

  1139. called the

  1140. present

  1141. middle

  1142. infinitive

  1143. tense

  1144. of a

  1145. verb.

  1146. And let

  1147. me tell

  1148. you what

  1149. that

  1150. means.

  1151. It

  1152. means

  1153. putting

  1154. on

  1155. and

  1156. putting

  1157. off

  1158. is a

  1159. continuous

  1160. action

  1161. that you

  1162. do

  1163. while it's

  1164. being done

  1165. to you.

  1166. That's

  1167. what that

  1168. means.

  1169. And a

  1170. good way

  1171. to read

  1172. verse

  1173. 23

  1174. is

  1175. something

  1176. like this.

  1177. Constantly

  1178. be made

  1179. new

  1180. in the

  1181. spirit

  1182. of your

  1183. thinking.

  1184. be made

  1185. new.

  1186. So in

  1187. other words

  1188. you are

  1189. being made

  1190. new.

  1191. That is

  1192. something

  1193. that's

  1194. being done

  1195. to you

  1196. while you

  1197. were doing

  1198. it.

  1199. Now

  1200. what he's

  1201. saying there

  1202. is he

  1203. didn't just

  1204. say because

  1205. he'd been

  1206. made renewed

  1207. as you

  1208. read the

  1209. Bible.

  1210. Or as

  1211. you think.

  1212. He didn't

  1213. just say

  1214. as you

  1215. think.

  1216. It's

  1217. literally

  1218. the spirit

  1219. of your

  1220. thinking

  1221. which is

  1222. a very

  1223. unusual

  1224. term.

  1225. for Paul.

  1226. It's

  1227. more than

  1228. rational

  1229. thought.

  1230. It is

  1231. more

  1232. the spirit

  1233. of your

  1234. thinking

  1235. is more

  1236. like the

  1237. idea of

  1238. the direction

  1239. of your

  1240. thinking.

  1241. It is

  1242. the state

  1243. of your

  1244. mind.

  1245. It is

  1246. the inner

  1247. life of

  1248. your

  1249. thinking.

  1250. To have

  1251. or as

  1252. some

  1253. commentators

  1254. have put it

  1255. it is

  1256. be renewed

  1257. by having

  1258. your

  1259. imagination

  1260. being taken

  1261. captive.

  1262. By what?

  1263. Verse 20

  1264. and 21

  1265. again.

  1266. That however

  1267. is not the

  1268. way of life

  1269. you learned

  1270. when you

  1271. were heard

  1272. about Christ

  1273. were taught

  1274. in him

  1275. in accordance

  1276. with the

  1277. truth that

  1278. is in

  1279. Jesus.

  1280. The way

  1281. to be

  1282. constantly

  1283. renewed

  1284. in the

  1285. spirit of

  1286. our

  1287. thinking

  1288. is not

  1289. to focus

  1290. on

  1291. Christian

  1292. morality

  1293. or Christian

  1294. principles

  1295. or Christian

  1296. ethics

  1297. or even

  1298. dare I

  1299. say

  1300. key

  1301. doctrines.

  1302. It is

  1303. to focus

  1304. not on a

  1305. principle

  1306. not on a

  1307. dogma

  1308. but on a

  1309. person.

  1310. It's to

  1311. focus on a

  1312. person.

  1313. not even

  1314. on a

  1315. title

  1316. but on a

  1317. person.

  1318. And the

  1319. reason I

  1320. say that

  1321. interesting

  1322. again

  1323. verse 21

  1324. is the

  1325. only time

  1326. in all

  1327. of Ephesians

  1328. where Paul

  1329. doesn't use

  1330. the term

  1331. Jesus

  1332. Christ

  1333. Christ

  1334. Jesus

  1335. or simply

  1336. Christ

  1337. he says

  1338. Jesus.

  1339. It's the

  1340. only time

  1341. he says

  1342. Jesus.

  1343. That's

  1344. what he

  1345. writes.

  1346. And normally

  1347. in Ephesians

  1348. he's

  1349. emphasizing the

  1350. lordship of

  1351. Christ over

  1352. all things

  1353. and here

  1354. he draws

  1355. their attention

  1356. to the

  1357. man

  1358. Jesus.

  1359. Why?

  1360. Because

  1361. the key

  1362. the key

  1363. to being

  1364. transformed

  1365. from the

  1366. inside out

  1367. giving us

  1368. a new

  1369. identity

  1370. and a

  1371. new

  1372. motive

  1373. and all

  1374. its

  1375. behaviors

  1376. you know

  1377. taking off

  1378. the old

  1379. self

  1380. with all

  1381. its

  1382. behaviors

  1383. and putting

  1384. on the

  1385. new

  1386. self

  1387. with all

  1388. of its

  1389. characteristics

  1390. and behaviors

  1391. becoming

  1392. more loving

  1393. more selfless

  1394. more forgiving

  1395. is to be

  1396. captivated by

  1397. the man

  1398. Jesus.

  1399. You see

  1400. the Christian

  1401. life

  1402. and what

  1403. Paul's

  1404. calling us

  1405. to here

  1406. Christian

  1407. ethics

  1408. Christian

  1409. behavior

  1410. Christian

  1411. morality

  1412. makes

  1413. absolutely

  1414. no sense

  1415. at all

  1416. unless

  1417. they are

  1418. seen

  1419. through the

  1420. lens of

  1421. the person

  1422. Jesus.

  1423. No

  1424. sense.

  1425. That's

  1426. why when

  1427. the person

  1428. says you

  1429. know do

  1430. I need

  1431. to stop

  1432. gossiping

  1433. and become

  1434. a Christian?

  1435. You know

  1436. well I need

  1437. to stop

  1438. that life

  1439. of slander

  1440. and gossip

  1441. in order

  1442. to be

  1443. a Christian

  1444. you've

  1445. not

  1446. understood

  1447. Christianity.

  1448. You're

  1449. focusing on

  1450. a behavior

  1451. not a

  1452. person

  1453. and when

  1454. you see

  1455. the person

  1456. you'll

  1457. understand

  1458. that gossiping

  1459. and slanderous

  1460. is damnable

  1461. to hell

  1462. because of

  1463. who Jesus

  1464. is.

  1465. And what

  1466. specifically

  1467. are we

  1468. meant to

  1469. see?

  1470. We're

  1471. meant to

  1472. see Jesus

  1473. moving in

  1474. the opposite

  1475. direction that

  1476. we've been

  1477. moving.

  1478. We've

  1479. taken off

  1480. the old

  1481. and put on

  1482. the new.

  1483. He was

  1484. already new

  1485. and he put

  1486. on our

  1487. old.

  1488. We need

  1489. to see

  1490. that

  1491. happening.

  1492. We can

  1493. only take

  1494. off the

  1495. old

  1496. corrupt

  1497. self

  1498. of

  1499. darkness

  1500. and

  1501. death

  1502. and

  1503. decay

  1504. and

  1505. eternal

  1506. destruction

  1507. and put

  1508. on the

  1509. new

  1510. self

  1511. of

  1512. life

  1513. and

  1514. life

  1515. and

  1516. renewal

  1517. and

  1518. glory

  1519. because

  1520. Jesus

  1521. went

  1522. the

  1523. opposite

  1524. for

  1525. us.

  1526. Ephesians

  1527. 2 says

  1528. he was

  1529. equal

  1530. with God

  1531. with all

  1532. his

  1533. perfect

  1534. love

  1535. and

  1536. splendor

  1537. and

  1538. majesty

  1539. and

  1540. glory

  1541. but he

  1542. laid

  1543. it

  1544. aside

  1545. and

  1546. he

  1547. entered

  1548. took

  1549. on

  1550. human

  1551. flesh

  1552. he

  1553. entered

  1554. all

  1555. the

  1556. suffering

  1557. the

  1558. darkness

  1559. the

  1560. evil

  1561. the

  1562. sin

  1563. the

  1564. corruption

  1565. of

  1566. this

  1567. world

  1568. he

  1569. identified

  1570. with us

  1571. and he

  1572. traded

  1573. places

  1574. with us

  1575. when he

  1576. went to

  1577. the cross

  1578. he

  1579. bore

  1580. !

  1581. Human

  1582. history's

  1583. entire

  1584. old

  1585. self

  1586. on

  1587. himself

  1588. and

  1589. where it

  1590. says in

  1591. chapter 5

  1592. God's

  1593. wrath

  1594. gets poured

  1595. out

  1596. on

  1597. such

  1598. sin

  1599. he

  1600. allowed

  1601. God's

  1602. wrath

  1603. to be

  1604. poured

  1605. out

  1606. on

  1607. him

  1608. instead

  1609. he

  1610. took

  1611. on

  1612. our

  1613. old

  1614. self

  1615. so

  1616. we

  1617. could

  1618. have

  1619. his

  1620. perfect

  1621. self

  1622. he

  1623. took

  1624. on

  1625. the

  1626. corruption

  1627. so

  1628. that

  1629. we

  1630. could

  1631. have

  1632. his

  1633. holiness

  1634. he

  1635. was

  1636. hated

  1637. so

  1638. that

  1639. we

  1640. could

  1641. be

  1642. loved

  1643. he

  1644. was

  1645. put

  1646. to

  1647. death

  1648. so

  1649. that

  1650. we

  1651. could

  1652. have

  1653. life

  1654. and

  1655. when

  1656. we

  1657. are

  1658. captivated

  1659. by

  1660. Jesus

  1661. doing

  1662. the

  1663. opposite

  1664. for

  1665. us

  1666. captivate

  1667. we

  1668. actually

  1669. start

  1670. to

  1671. see

  1672. that

  1673. what

  1674. he

  1675. outlines

  1676. here

  1677. in

  1678. the

  1679. Christian

  1680. life

  1681. makes

  1682. entire

  1683. sense

  1684. as

  1685. we're

  1686. captivated

  1687. by

  1688. him

  1689. the

  1690. new

  1691. identity

  1692. grows

  1693. and so

  1694. does

  1695. the

  1696. internal

  1697. motive

  1698. of

  1699. wanting

  1700. to

  1701. please

  1702. him

  1703. and

  1704. be

  1705. like

  1706. him

  1707. in

  1708. everything

  1709. so

  1710. finally

  1711. and

  1712. really

  1713. quickly

  1714. there

  1715. is

  1716. a

  1717. fourth

  1718. point

  1719. and

  1720. I'm

  1721. going

  1722. to

  1723. brush

  1724. over

  1725. this

  1726. real

  1727. fast

  1728. what

  1729. does

  1730. it

  1731. look

  1732. like

  1733. what

  1734. might

  1735. be

  1736. the

  1737. signs

  1738. of

  1739. such

  1740. transformation

  1741. how

  1742. can

  1743. I

  1744. tell

  1745. whether

  1746. I'm

  1747. truly

  1748. being

  1749. transformed

  1750. or

  1751. if

  1752. I'm

  1753. just

  1754. taking

  1755. on

  1756. certain

  1757. behaviours

  1758. first

  1759. of

  1760. all

  1761. this

  1762. is

  1763. a

  1764. summary

  1765. of

  1766. verses

  1767. 5

  1768. to

  1769. 14

  1770. the

  1771. transforming

  1772. Christian

  1773. knows

  1774. their

  1775. sin

  1776. and

  1777. they

  1778. walk

  1779. in

  1780. obedience

  1781. they

  1782. know

  1783. their

  1784. sin

  1785. they

  1786. don't

  1787. minimise

  1788. their

  1789. sin

  1790. as

  1791. the

  1792. Christian

  1793. grows

  1794. they

  1795. have

  1796. a

  1797. growing

  1798. sense

  1799. of

  1800. just

  1801. how

  1802. comprehensive

  1803. and

  1804. evil

  1805. their

  1806. sin

  1807. is

  1808. and

  1809. comprehensive

  1810. in the

  1811. sense

  1812. of the

  1813. power

  1814. that it

  1815. has

  1816. over

  1817. their

  1818. hearts

  1819. the

  1820. guilt

  1821. of

  1822. their

  1823. sin

  1824. the

  1825. guilt

  1826. that

  1827. is

  1828. required

  1829. of

  1830. their

  1831. sin

  1832. and

  1833. also

  1834. the

  1835. forgiveness

  1836. of

  1837. sin

  1838. the

  1839. forgiveness

  1840. of

  1841. sin

  1842. that is

  1843. what

  1844. they're

  1845. doing

  1846. is

  1847. as a

  1848. Christian

  1849. grows

  1850. they

  1851. grow

  1852. deeper

  1853. and

  1854. deeper

  1855. and

  1856. deeper

  1857. in

  1858. grieving

  1859. and being

  1860. aware

  1861. of

  1862. their

  1863. sin

  1864. and

  1865. higher

  1866. and

  1867. higher

  1868. and

  1869. higher

  1870. of

  1871. understanding

  1872. if

  1873. that's

  1874. how

  1875. deep

  1876. my

  1877. sin

  1878. is

  1879. that's

  1880. how

  1881. great

  1882. God's

  1883. forgiveness

  1884. is

  1885. you

  1886. do

  1887. both

  1888. they

  1889. correspond

  1890. to

  1891. both

  1892. and

  1893. they

  1894. hold

  1895. it

  1896. in

  1897. balance

  1898. there

  1899. is

  1900. no

  1901. sin

  1902. so

  1903. small

  1904. that

  1905. it's

  1906. not

  1907. damnable

  1908. and

  1909. there's

  1910. no

  1911. sin

  1912. so

  1913. great

  1914. that

  1915. it's

  1916. not

  1917. forgivable

  1918. secondly

  1919. in

  1920. verses

  1921. 15

  1922. to

  1923. 17

  1924. the

  1925. growing

  1938. the

  1943. that

  1944. obedience

  1945. is

  1946. not

  1947. simply

  1948. obeying

  1949. rules

  1950. but

  1951. it's

  1952. about

  1953. living

  1954. life

  1955. rightly

  1956. under

  1957. the

  1958. lordship

  1959. of

  1961. for

  2166. could

  2167. have

  2168. done

  2169. that

  2170. couldn't

  2171. he

  2172. why

  2173. not

  2174. do

  2175. that

  2176. well

  2177. it's

  2178. because

  2179. of

  2180. verses

  2181. like

  2182. this

  2183. in

  2184. the

  2185. Bible

  2186. 104

  2187. verse

  2188. 15

  2189. wine

  2190. the

  2191. glad

  2192. and

  2193. human

  2194. heart

  2195. judges

  2196. 9

  2197. 13

  2198. should

  2199. I

  2200. give

  2201. up

  2202. my

  2203. wine

  2204. which

  2205. cheers

  2206. both

  2207. God

  2208. and

  2209. humans

  2210. Zechariah

  2211. 10

  2212. 7

  2213. their

  2214. hearts

  2215. will

  2216. be

  2217. glad

  2218. as

  2219. with

  2220. wine

  2221. and

  2222. so

  2223. see

  2224. the

  2225. theme

  2226. here

  2227. one

  2228. of the

  2229. markers

  2230. of this

  2231. new

  2232. self

  2233. is

  2234. joy

  2235. joy

  2236. not

  2237. duty

  2238. but

  2239. joy

  2240. despite

  2241. the

  2242. circumstances

  2243. of my

  2244. life

  2245. instead

  2246. of

  2247. wine

  2248. soothing

  2249. the

  2250. futility

  2251. of my

  2252. life

  2253. the

  2254. spirit

  2255. now

  2256. is

  2257. working

  2258. through

  2259. the

  2260. word

  2261. of

  2262. God

  2263. to

  2264. fill

  2265. my

  2266. heart

  2267. with

  2268. hope

  2269. and

  2270. purpose

  2271. and

  2272. joy

  2273. in

  2274. such

  2275. a

  2276. way

  2277. that

  2278. it

  2279. overflows

  2280. with

  2281. songs

  2282. of

  2283. praise

  2284. to

  2285. God

  2286. there

  2287. is

  2288. something

  2289. not

  2290. right

  2291. about

  2292. the

  2293. consistently

  2294. miserable

  2295. Christian

  2296. the

  2297. grumblers

  2298. read the

  2299. book of

  2300. numbers

  2301. and see

  2302. the

  2303. grumblers

  2304. grumbling

  2305. grumbling

  2306. grumbling

  2307. joy

  2308. grows

  2309. as we

  2310. are

  2311. captivated

  2312. by

  2313. Jesus

  2314. because

  2315. you

  2316. see

  2317. more

  2318. and

  2319. more

  2320. that

  2321. you

  2322. can

  2323. lose

  2324. everything

  2325. in

  2326. life

  2327. and

  2328. still

  2329. have

  2330. absolutely

  2331. everything

  2332. in

  2333. him

  2334. and

  2335. so

  2336. let

  2337. me

  2338. just

  2339. say

  2340. very

  2341. briefly

  2342. by way

  2343. of

  2344. application

  2345. all

  2346. of

  2347. our

  2348. seven

  2349. rhythms

  2350. at

  2351. this

  2352. church

  2353. our

  2354. rhythms

  2355. of

  2356. grace

  2357. exist

  2358. to

  2359. get

  2360. us

  2361. into

  2362. the

  2363. habit

  2364. of

  2365. being

  2366. captivated

  2367. by

  2368. Jesus

  2369. that's

  2370. why

  2371. they

  2372. exist

  2373. to

  2374. be

  2375. captivated

  2376. by

  2377. Jesus

  2378. that

  2379. he

  2380. might

  2381. feel

  2382. our

  2383. imaginations

  2384. and

  2385. our

  2386. lives

  2387. and

  2388. that

  2389. we

  2390. might

  2391. change

  2392. that

  2393. we

  2394. might

  2395. become

  2396. more

  2397. confident

  2398. of

  2399. our

  2400. forgiveness

  2401. that

  2402. we

  2403. might

  2404. become

  2405. more

  2406. wise

  2407. that

  2408. we

  2409. become

  2410. more

  2411. joyful

  2412. and so

  2413. make

  2414. a

  2415. decisive

  2416. choice

  2417. now

  2418. to

  2419. take

  2420. your

  2421. next

  2422. step

  2423. to

  2424. become

  2425. transformed

  2426. because

  2427. Christian

  2428. you are

  2429. transformed

  2430. a

  2431. ending

  2432. ending

  2433. ending

  2434. ending

  2435. ending

  2436. ending

  2437. ending

  2438. ending

  2439. ending

  2440. ending
