  1. Well, good morning everyone.

  2. I've not met you before, my name's Steve.

  3. ! Lee passed here at St. Paul's and we're starting a series, as we've said, on marriage.

  4. ! Marriage is finding that one special person that you want to annoy for the rest of your life.

  5. That's one definition of marriage.

  6. Love is blind, but marriage is the great eye-opener.

  7. Love is one long, sweet dream, and marriage is the alarm clock.

  8. My husband and I have agreed to never go to bed angry with each other,

  9. and so far we've been awake for the last three days.

  10. If you're married, you'll resonate with some of those sort of short quips, if you like.

  11. The interesting thing is, though, you don't need to be married for that,

  12. to see some of it from that perspective, because we all see marriage through a distorted lens.

  13. And that distorted lens is our own experience of it.

  14. If your experience is parents who had a fantastic marriage,

  15. that may cause you to see marriage as something that is relatively easy.

  16. And you may get a profound shock when yourself are married

  17. and discover how hard it is to forge a great marriage.

  18. If you have experienced a troubled marriage or a divorce,

  19. either as a child or now as an adult,

  20. your view of marriage may be wary, pessimistic even.

  21. You may be entering marriage, particularly if you grew up in a bad marriage,

  22. you may be entering marriage expecting of relationship problems,

  23. or when they appear, you're very quickly to go,

  24. ah, here we go, this is exactly what I anticipated.

  25. You see, any experience of marriage we've had would cause us,

  26. in one way or another, to be unprepared for it.

  27. Marriage, as we see there in verse 32 of Ephesians 5,

  28. is a profound mystery.

  29. It's unlike any other relationship in the world.

  30. And so we're going to spend this term trying to unravel,

  31. if you like, this profound mystery.

  32. The plan is to give both the married and the unmarried people amongst us here

  33. a biblical vision of marriage according to the Bible,

  34. according to Christianity.

  35. And so this series is for the approximately 59% of us who are married

  36. in our church family.

  37. And the hope will be it will correct mistaken views

  38. and mistaken views that may be right now harming your marriage

  39. and hopefully bring you to a perspective of grace.

  40. When Nat and I got married 9,962 days ago today,

  41. not that anyone's counting,

  42. we were like most young modern couples.

  43. We found marriage to be much harder than we expected it to be.

  44. Marriage is, in reality, the union of two people

  45. who come together with life's baggage.

  46. And so marriage is glorious, but it's also profoundly hard.

  47. It is a burning joy and strength,

  48. and yet it is also blood, sweat, and tears.

  49. There are multitudes of humbling defeats and exhausting victories at the same time.

  50. No marriage, I know, that is more than a few weeks old

  51. could be described as a fairy trail come true.

  52. Often, however, in the church, we don't talk like that.

  53. We project an unhelpful view of marriage.

  54. The thing is, I don't recall anyone saying to Nat and I

  55. how hard it will be until one young couple said to us about,

  56. asked us about 12 months into marriage,

  57. how's your first 12 months been?

  58. Because for us, it was a nightmare.

  59. And you've been now married 20-odd years,

  60. and it's like no one had ever said that to us.

  61. Everyone talked about the honeymoon period.

  62. That's all they talked about.

  63. So it's for the marriage amongst us.

  64. Secondly, we're doing this series for the 41% approximately

  65. of unmarried people in our church family,

  66. and hoping it will deal with any unhelpful over-desiring of marriage

  67. or deal with any unhelpful, pessimistic dismissing of marriage.

  68. Hopefully going to do that as well.

  69. You see, single people need to...

  70. They need a brutally realistic and yet glorious vision

  71. of what marriage actually is and also what it can be.

  72. And thirdly, we're doing this series,

  73. and I must say primarily because of what we discovered

  74. in Ephesians' last term.

  75. We're actually doing this series because Ash said we should,

  76. told me we should.

  77. And he was right in that we got to the series in Ephesians

  78. and we skipped over this one in one sermon,

  79. and there's so much to unpack here

  80. because the book of Ephesians reveals the position

  81. and job description of the church

  82. in affecting God's grand plan for all time and eternity.

  83. And all of God's plans for eternity,

  84. to make a people for himself,

  85. to enjoy forever in his presence,

  86. in unity through the Lord Jesus Christ,

  87. is worked out in time and space through the church,

  88. which the Bible describes as the bride of Christ.

  89. I mentioned it many times last term.

  90. The American pastor and theologian Jonathan Edwards said

  91. that God created the entire universe

  92. that the eternal Son of God might attain a spouse.

  93. And so therefore, marriage, as we see it in the Bible,

  94. is deeply connected to God's purposes for all things

  95. and all time.

  96. It's not a side point here.

  97. It's not just a change of subject in Ephesians.

  98. In Ephesians 5, we have the longest, most famous,

  99. and, dare I say, controversial passage in the Bible on marriage.

  100. And it's one that we can't just skip over.

  101. And so I'm thankful to Ash for pushing me on this one.

  102. And so the primary purpose, as we unpack this series,

  103. is not tips on marriage.

  104. It's not 10 takeaways to make your marriage a little bit healthier.

  105. This is primarily theological.

  106. It's primarily theological in understanding who God is

  107. because that is what marriage does.

  108. It helps us understand who God is.

  109. And in understanding God, it helps us understand marriage.

  110. That's where we're headed in the next number of weeks.

  111. And you're probably going to have a bunch of questions,

  112. and I may not answer any of them as we go through.

  113. It's not marriage counselling, even though I dare say it should be helpful,

  114. as even in my own preparation has been helpful for me.

  115. So here's the three points for today.

  116. We're going to look at, you know, it's really introductory, this sermon,

  117. looking at marriage, broadly speaking, as it's shifted over time,

  118. looking at the Bible's perspective,

  119. and then finally we'll land on the mystery,

  120. the profound mystery of marriage.

  121. Okay, so first of all, marriage made over time.

  122. In Western civilisations, there's been several competing views

  123. as to what marriage is, what it should be.

  124. Traditionally, over the centuries,

  125. there's been the Catholic and the Protestant perspectives.

  126. They're similar but different.

  127. Similar in the sense that both taught that the purpose of marriage

  128. was, or the institution of marriage,

  129. was a lifelong devotion and love between a husband and a wife.

  130. It was a solemn bond,

  131. designed to help each other,

  132. to subordinate individual impulses and interests

  133. in favour of the union.

  134. The Catholic Church, the Roman Catholic Church,

  135. emphasised marriage as a sacrament of God's love.

  136. Protestants understood marriage to be given by God,

  137. not merely for Christians,

  138. but in fact for the benefit of the entire of humanity.

  139. Marriage was designed to build character

  140. by bringing a male and a female together

  141. into a binding partnership.

  142. Now, these older traditional culture views,

  143. and generally not just the Western civilisation,

  144. but more traditional cultures have a similar view on this,

  145. they taught that their members

  146. to find meaning in duty

  147. by embracing their assigned social roles

  148. and carrying them out faithfully.

  149. So personal meaning

  150. was found through self-denial,

  151. giving up one's freedoms,

  152. and binding oneself to the duties

  153. of marriage and family and society.

  154. That's the traditional view.

  155. That started to shift

  156. in the 18th and 19th century,

  157. particularly in Western civilisation,

  158. which is now permeating most of the world

  159. because we've got Hollywood and things like that.

  160. It started to shift,

  161. particularly being triggered

  162. during the time of the Enlightenment.

  163. The meaning of marriage in that season

  164. came to be the freedom of the individual

  165. to choose the life that most fulfils them personally.

  166. That's the view that started to shift

  167. in the 18th, 19th century.

  168. And so marriage, with that view,

  169. was being redefined

  170. as finding emotional and sexual fulfilment

  171. and self-actualisation.

  172. That became the purpose of marriage.

  173. And this new approach to marriage

  174. saw marriage as a contract

  175. between two parties

  176. for mutual individual growth and satisfaction.

  177. That is,

  178. you married for yourself,

  179. not for God,

  180. not for society,

  181. not for the other.

  182. And spouses should, therefore,

  183. this is the view,

  184. be allowed to conduct their marriage

  185. in any way they consider beneficial

  186. for them personally.

  187. And so broadly speaking,

  188. what happened in the time of the Enlightenment

  189. is this new perspective of marriage

  190. privatised marriage.

  191. It took it from the public sphere

  192. to privatising it.

  193. And it redefined its purpose

  194. as individual gratification.

  195. I can't tell you the number of couples

  196. that are prepared for marriage

  197. and you ask the question

  198. about expectations

  199. from broader families and so on,

  200. and the vast majority say,

  201. what does it matter?

  202. We're the ones getting married.

  203. It's our marriage after all.

  204. It privatised marriage.

  205. And so slowly but surely,

  206. this newer understanding

  207. of the meaning of marriage

  208. became the dominant view in society,

  209. which is what it is now.

  210. It used to be a public institution

  211. for the common good

  212. and now it's a private arrangement

  213. for the satisfaction of the individual.

  214. Marriage used to be about us,

  215. now it's about me.

  216. And ironically,

  217. one of the reasons for this shift

  218. is the proponents of the new version of marriage,

  219. the new view of marriage,

  220. saw the old view of marriage

  221. as being oppressive.

  222. It's an oppressive view of marriage

  223. and of life.

  224. And the irony is

  225. that this new view of marriage

  226. actually puts a crushing burden

  227. of expectations on marriage

  228. and on spouses

  229. in a way that more traditional understanding

  230. of marriage never did.

  231. And the particular burden

  232. that is there nowadays

  233. in the modern view of marriage

  234. is this new idea

  235. which arose out of the enlightenment,

  236. the new idea of the compatible soulmate

  237. that out there in the world

  238. is the one.

  239. The one.

  240. And that concept is a,

  241. the concept of compatibility

  242. and the concept of a soulmate

  243. is a very, very new development

  244. in the institution of marriage.

  245. And it creates an extreme idealism

  246. that in turn leads to a deep pessimism.

  247. You see, the new view of marriage

  248. as self-realisation

  249. has caused people

  250. to first of all

  251. want too much out of marriage

  252. and yet also at the same time

  253. not nearly enough out of marriage.

  254. Men and women today

  255. want a marriage

  256. in which they can receive

  257. emotional

  258. and sexual satisfaction

  259. from someone

  260. who will simply

  261. let them be

  262. themselves.

  263. They want a spouse

  264. who is

  265. fun,

  266. intellectually stimulating,

  267. sexually attractive,

  268. where you've got

  269. many common interests

  270. and who on top of all of that

  271. is entirely supportive

  272. of your personal goals

  273. and of the way

  274. you are currently living

  275. right now.

  276. And that search,

  277. looking for that person,

  278. goes on and on

  279. and on and on

  280. trying to find them.

  281. It takes

  282. years.

  283. Or in Nat's case,

  284. it was pretty quick.

  285. It does lead to a deep pessimism

  286. in life

  287. and for this concept

  288. of marriage.

  289. You see,

  290. if your desire

  291. is for a spouse

  292. who will not demand

  293. a lot of change

  294. from you,

  295. then you are looking

  296. for a spouse

  297. who is almost

  298. completely together,

  299. very low maintenance

  300. and with virtually

  301. no personal problems

  302. at all,

  303. you're looking for someone

  304. who will not require

  305. change

  306. or demand

  307. change.

  308. not only

  309. someone

  310. who is

  311. completely together

  312. themselves,

  313. but you're looking

  314. for someone

  315. who's prepared

  316. to put up

  317. with you

  318. being not

  319. completely together

  320. yourself.

  321. You are searching

  322. therefore

  323. for the ideal person,

  324. happy,

  325. healthy,

  326. interesting,

  327. stable,

  328. wise,

  329. content,

  330. attractive,

  331. together in life,

  332. fully together

  333. in life

  334. and under 30.

  335. Good luck

  336. with that.

  337. You see,

  338. the assumption

  339. that there is

  340. someone out there

  341. who is just

  342. right for me

  343. to marry

  344. fails to

  345. appreciate

  346. the fact

  347. that everyone

  348. who gets

  349. married

  350. always,

  351. everyone,

  352. always

  353. marries

  354. the wrong

  355. person.

  356. They're going to be

  357. doing it.

  358. Did I just say that?

  359. Yes,

  360. I did just say that.

  361. Every single

  362. person

  363. who marries

  364. everyone,

  365. they always

  366. marry

  367. the wrong

  368. person.

  369. And that's

  370. because

  371. we think

  372. we know

  373. the person

  374. that we are

  375. marrying

  376. on that wedding

  377. day,

  378. but we

  379. actually

  380. don't.

  381. Marriage

  382. is a

  383. journey

  384. of

  385. discovering

  386. who

  387. that

  388. person

  389. is.

  390. What you

  391. do when

  392. you say

  393. I do

  394. is you

  395. are marrying

  396. a stranger.

  397. Because even

  398. when you

  399. think you've

  400. married the

  401. right person,

  402. it is just

  403. a matter

  404. of months

  405. and they

  406. will

  407. change.

  408. Because

  409. marriage

  410. brings you

  411. into a

  412. more

  413. intense

  414. proximity

  415. to another

  416. human being

  417. than any

  418. other

  419. relationship.

  420. And the

  421. moment you

  422. marry

  423. someone

  424. who

  425. you think

  426. you know,

  427. by its

  428. actual

  429. definition,

  430. marriage

  431. begins to

  432. change who

  433. they are

  434. in profound

  435. ways.

  436. There's not

  437. a single

  438. person who

  439. can predict

  440. the future.

  441. There's not

  442. a single

  443. person who

  444. on their

  445. wedding day

  446. knows how

  447. their spouse

  448. will change.

  449. And so

  450. the quest

  451. for a

  452. compatible

  453. soulmate,

  454. sorry,

  455. compatible,

  456. not

  457. compatible,

  458. you get

  459. that anyway,

  460. so compatible

  461. soulmate is

  462. an impossibility.

  463. It's an

  464. impossibility.

  465. And so

  466. we're faced

  467. with a

  468. problem with

  469. the modern

  470. view of

  471. marriage.

  472. Our

  473. culture makes

  474. individual

  475. freedom,

  476. personal

  477. autonomy,

  478. fulfillment,

  479. the very

  480. highest

  481. values.

  482. And the

  483. reality is

  484. every single

  485. love

  486. relationship.

  487. But very

  488. specifically

  489. married

  490. relationship

  491. means the

  492. loss of

  493. those things.

  494. And yet

  495. choosing

  496. to not

  497. lose those

  498. things and

  499. therefore not

  500. to commit

  501. yourself to

  502. another person

  503. means you

  504. lose yourself.

  505. I think

  506. no one put it

  507. any clearer

  508. than C.S.

  509. Lewis in his

  510. book,

  511. The Four

  512. Loves.

  513. Love

  514. anything and

  515. your heart

  516. will certainly

  517. be wrung

  518. and possibly

  519. broken.

  520. If you want

  521. to make sure

  522. of keeping

  523. it intact,

  524. you must give

  525. your heart

  526. to no one,

  527. not even to

  528. an animal.

  529. Wrap it up

  530. carefully,

  531. round with

  532. hobbies and

  533. little luxuries.

  534. Avoid all

  535. entanglements.

  536. Lock it up

  537. safe in the

  538. casket or the

  539. coffin of your

  540. selfishness.

  541. But in that

  542. casket,

  543. safe,

  544. dark,

  545. motionless,

  546. airless,

  547. it will

  548. change.

  549. It will

  550. not be

  551. broken,

  552. it will

  553. become

  554. unbreakable,

  555. impenetrable,

  556. irredeemable.

  557. The alternative

  558. is tragedy

  559. or at least

  560. to the risk

  561. of tragedy

  562. is damnation.

  563. So which

  564. do we

  565. choose?

  566. This brings

  567. me to the

  568. biblical view,

  569. what the

  570. Bible says

  571. of our

  572. marriage.

  573. The

  574. Bible begins

  575. with the

  576. wedding of

  577. Adam and

  578. Eve.

  579. It ends

  580. in the

  581. book of

  582. Revelation

  583. with the

  584. wedding of

  585. Christ and

  586. his church.

  587. And there's

  588. an awful

  589. lot of

  590. teaching in

  591. the pages

  592. in between

  593. and examples

  594. in the

  595. pages in

  596. between of

  597. marriage.

  598. And so the

  599. beginning of

  600. the Bible

  601. records God

  602. creating the

  603. universe and

  604. towards the

  605. end of that

  606. process of

  607. creation,

  608. we have

  609. God saying

  610. this,

  611. let us

  612. make man

  613. in our

  614. image.

  615. This is

  616. the, if you

  617. like, the

  618. earliest glimpse

  619. of what is

  620. the Christian

  621. teaching on the

  622. Trinity of God.

  623. That is,

  624. there is one

  625. God,

  626. Father,

  627. Son,

  628. and Holy

  629. Spirit.

  630. God's

  631. God's

  632. plurality is

  633. the thing

  634. that's

  635. It was

  636. St. Augustine

  637. who said that

  638. the Trinity is

  639. the only version of God

  640. and the only version of

  641. God and the only version of

  642. ultimate reality that has

  643. personal relationship,

  644. intimate personal

  645. relationship at its very

  646. core.

  647. Only the God of

  648. Christianity is a

  649. God of community.

  650. God is a, in

  651. himself, a

  652. self-sufficient,

  653. self-sustaining

  654. community.

  655. The technical term

  656. is perichoresis,

  657. a mutual

  658. indwelling of

  659. mutual

  660. sacrificial love.

  661. That is at the

  662. core of

  663. ultimate reality.

  664. unity.

  665. Three persons

  666. delighting in

  667. and loving

  668. each other.

  669. You see,

  670. if God were a

  671. singular being,

  672. monotheistic

  673. view,

  674. then

  675. love and

  676. relationship

  677. would be entirely

  678. secondary to

  679. God.

  680. It would be

  681. secondary to

  682. ultimate reality.

  683. That is,

  684. love,

  685. relationship,

  686. community

  687. would be

  688. derived from,

  689. not at the

  690. center of.

  691. And that's

  692. the only way

  693. that we can

  694. come to

  695. terms with

  696. Genesis

    Genesis 2:18

  697. chapter 2

  698. verse 18

  699. which says,

  700. the Lord God

  701. said,

  702. it is not

  703. good for

  704. the man

  705. to be

  706. alone.

  707. Every single

  708. thing in the

  709. creation account

  710. up to this

  711. point,

  712. God said

  713. is good.

  714. This is the

  715. only time

  716. where he says

  717. something is

  718. not good.

  719. God.

  720. And the

  721. missing piece

  722. is Adam,

  723. the man,

  724. is made in

  725. the image of

  726. a God who

  727. is us,

  728. not me.

  729. He was

  730. made in the

  731. image of an

  732. eternal

  733. community.

  734. And so

  735. personal

  736. relationships are

  737. the essence of

  738. humanity.

  739. Deep

  740. relationship with

  741. God,

  742. deep relationship

  743. with other

  744. human beings

  745. and particularly

  746. deep relationship

  747. with other

  748. human beings

  749. who are

  750. different than

  751. us.

  752. And so

  753. God creates

  754. woman.

  755. And the

  756. last thing we

  757. see in the

  758. creation account

  759. is that God

  760. officiates at

  761. the first

  762. wedding in

  763. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  764. 2.

  765. And when the

  766. man sees the

  767. woman, like

  768. him but

  769. different than

  770. him, he

  771. breaks out in

  772. poetry and

  773. exclaims,

  774. oh boy,

  775. wow,

  776. wow,

  777. at last,

  778. this is it.

  779. And so we

  780. are meant to

  781. conclude that

  782. marriage to

  783. our relationship

  784. with God is

  785. the most

  786. profound

  787. relationship in

  788. all of

  789. created order.

  790. It reflects

  791. the God who

  792. made us.

  793. God

  794. reflects his

  795. eternal

  796. purposes to

  797. bring humanity

  798. into relationship

  799. with himself and

  800. be united with

  801. himself through

  802. the Lord Jesus

  803. Christ forever.

  804. So the

  805. Bible doesn't

  806. see marriage

  807. as a human

  808. institution that

  809. is shaped by

  810. culture as we

  811. choose to shape

  812. it.

  813. It sees

  814. marriage as

  815. something that

  816. is invented

  817. by God

  818. to display

  819. something of

  820. God and

  821. his purposes

  822. for humanity.

  823. It sits

  824. above culture.

  825. Now, having

  826. said that,

  827. it's also a

  828. human institution

  829. and it reflects

  830. the character

  831. and the

  832. particular human

  833. culture in which

  834. it's embedded.

  835. But having

  836. said that,

  837. the Bible,

  838. its teaching

  839. on marriage,

  840. does not

  841. reflect a

  842. particular

  843. perspective of

  844. any one

  845. culture at

  846. any one

  847. time.

  848. And so we

  849. will unpack

  850. this as we

  851. go through

  852. the rest of

  853. Ephesians 5

  854. and some of

  855. the more

  856. controversial

  857. bits.

  858. Controversial

  859. bits because

  860. of culturally

  861. for our

  862. time.

  863. We're reading

  864. it through a

  865. lens of a

  866. culture, not

  867. through God's

  868. purposes.

  869. And so the

  870. Bible challenges

  871. our contemporary

  872. Western culture's

  873. narrative of

  874. individual freedom

  875. as the only

  876. way to be

  877. happy.

  878. It also

  879. critiques how

  880. traditional

  881. cultures perceive

  882. the unmarried

  883. adult to be

  884. less than a

  885. fully formed

  886. human being.

  887. Genesis

  888. critiques the

  889. institution of

  890. polygamy.

  891. It records it.

  892. It doesn't

  893. endorse it.

  894. Because even

  895. in the times of

  896. Genesis, it

  897. was accepted

  898. cultural practice.

  899. and so what

  900. Genesis does

  901. for us, it

  902. records the

  903. misery and

  904. the havoc it

  905. plays in

  906. family relationships

  907. and the

  908. pain that it

  909. caused and

  910. particularly for

  911. women.

  912. The New

  913. Testament writers

  914. lift up long

  915. term singleness

  916. as a legitimate

  917. way to live in

  918. a way that is

  919. countercultural to

  920. our day and

  921. countercultural to

  922. traditional

  923. communities and

  924. societies.

  925. And so what we

  926. can't do is we

  927. can't write off

  928. the biblical view

  929. of marriage as

  930. being one

  931. dimensional, as

  932. being regressive

  933. and culturally

  934. obsolete.

  935. You can't do

  936. that.

  937. The Bible also

  938. tells us that

  939. sin is the

  940. source of all

  941. relational

  942. breakdown.

  943. Because straight

  944. after the first

  945. wedding of Adam

  946. and Eve, these

  947. newlyweds rejected

  948. God's rule over

  949. their life.

  950. They disobeyed

  951. his commands,

  952. went down the

  953. path of self

  954. realisation,

  955. living for

  956. themselves.

  957. And what

  958. happened in that

  959. moment with Adam

  960. and Eve was

  961. immediately, it

  962. was profound.

  963. They went from

  964. the wow,

  965. unity,

  966. they went from

  967. total transparency

  968. and vulnerability

  969. to immediately

  970. wanting to cover

  971. themselves up,

  972. to immediately

  973. wanting to hide

  974. themselves from

  975. the one who

  976. moments earlier

  977. they went,

  978. wow.

  979. and so the main

  980. reason no one

  981. ever marries the

  982. right person

  983. is because all

  984. of us since

  985. that day

  986. are broken

  987. by sin

  988. and we are

  989. all profoundly

  990. self-centred.

  991. And so the

  992. Bible's view of

  993. marriage explains

  994. why it is so

  995. good and

  996. important

  997. and it

  998. teaches

  999. us

  1000. sin

  1001. is the

  1002. reason why

  1003. it makes

  1004. it so

  1005. hard.

  1006. That's the

  1007. biblical

  1008. perspective of

  1009. holding both

  1010. of those things

  1011. together.

  1012. So let's

  1013. jump very

  1014. quickly to

  1015. Ephesians 5

  1016. and the

  1017. mystery of

  1018. marriage.

  1019. That phrase,

  1020. if you like,

  1021. verse 32 is

  1022. the pinnacle

  1023. of

  1024. Ephesians 5

  1025. and this

  1026. passage on

  1027. marriage.

  1028. And the

  1029. one that I

  1030. think many

  1031. married people

  1032. can relate

  1033. to is

  1034. verse 32.

  1035. This is a

  1036. profound

  1037. mystery.

  1038. The Greek

  1039. word that

  1040. Paul uses

  1041. there is

  1042. mysterion

  1043. and it

  1044. has a

  1045. range of

  1046. meanings

  1047. including

  1048. the idea

  1049. of secret,

  1050. the idea

  1051. of a

  1052. secret.

  1053. And in

  1054. the Bible

  1055. the word

  1056. secret

  1057. means a

  1058. wondrous

  1059. unlooked

  1060. for truth

  1061. that God

  1062. is making

  1063. known through

  1064. his spirit.

  1065. We're not

  1066. looking for

  1067. it but God's

  1068. revealing it

  1069. through his

  1070. spirit.

  1071. That's what

  1072. the idea

  1073. is.

  1074. And this is

  1075. how he

  1076. describes

  1077. marriage.

  1078. In verse

  1079. 31 he

  1080. quotes the

  1081. final verse

  1082. of the

  1083. Genesis

  1084. account of

  1085. the first

  1086. marriage.

  1087. A man

  1088. shall leave

  1089. his father

  1090. and mother

  1091. and be

  1092. united to

  1093. his wife

  1094. and the

  1095. two shall

  1096. become one

  1097. flesh.

  1098. and then

  1099. he adds

  1100. this is

  1101. a profound

  1102. mystery or

  1103. quite literally

  1104. this is a

  1105. mega

  1106. mysterion.

  1107. It's an

  1108. extraordinarily

  1109. great,

  1110. wonderful and

  1111. profound

  1112. truth that

  1113. can be

  1114. understood

  1115. only with

  1116. the help

  1117. of God's

  1118. spirit.

  1119. what is the

  1120. secret of

  1121. marriage?

  1122. What is the

  1123. mystery, the

  1124. profound

  1125. mystery?

  1126. Paul

  1127. immediately

  1128. adds it.

  1129. I am

  1130. talking about

  1131. Christ and

  1132. the church.

  1133. That's the

  1134. mystery of

  1135. marriage.

  1136. And when he

  1137. says about

  1138. that, what

  1139. he's referring

  1140. to is verse

  1141. 25.

  1142. A husband,

  1143. love your

  1144. wives just

  1145. as Christ

  1146. loved the

  1147. church and

  1148. gave himself

  1149. up for

  1150. her.

  1151. See, the

  1152. profound

  1153. mystery is

  1154. not marriage

  1155. per se.

  1156. The profound

  1157. mystery is

  1158. what husbands

  1159. should do for

  1160. their wives

  1161. is what

  1162. Jesus has

  1163. already done

  1164. to bring us

  1165. into union

  1166. with the

  1167. God who's

  1168. created us.

  1169. That's the

  1170. profound

  1171. mystery.

  1172. Jesus gave

  1173. himself up

  1174. for us.

  1175. the profound

  1176. mystery is

  1177. that every

  1178. marriage is

  1179. a snapshot

  1180. of the

  1181. union

  1182. between

  1183. God

  1184. and his

  1185. spouse,

  1186. his people,

  1187. the church.

  1188. Every

  1189. marriage.

  1190. Jesus,

  1191. God the

  1192. son,

  1193. though equal

  1194. with the

  1195. father,

  1196. gave up

  1197. his glory,

  1198. humbled

  1199. himself,

  1200. took on

  1201. our human

  1202. nature.

  1203. He

  1204. willingly

  1205. lowered

  1206. himself

  1207. further

  1208. down even

  1209. still by

  1210. dying on a

  1211. Roman cross,

  1212. paying the

  1213. penalty for

  1214. our sin of

  1215. rejecting God

  1216. and pursuing

  1217. self-actualization.

  1218. And in doing

  1219. so, he removes

  1220. our guilt and

  1221. our condemnation

  1222. so that we

  1223. can be united

  1224. with him and

  1225. take on his

  1226. glorious nature.

  1227. He gave up

  1228. his infinite

  1229. glory.

  1230. He broke an

  1231. eternal

  1232. relationship and

  1233. became a

  1234. slave.

  1235. He died to

  1236. his own

  1237. self-interest

  1238. and looked

  1239. to our

  1240. interests

  1241. instead.

  1242. Jesus'

  1243. sacrificial

  1244. service to

  1245. us has

  1246. brought us

  1247. into a

  1248. deep union

  1249. with him

  1250. and he

  1251. with us.

  1252. And Paul

  1253. says that

  1254. the key to

  1255. not only

  1256. understanding

  1257. marriage,

  1258. but living

  1259. marriage,

  1260. is that.

  1261. as one

  1262. commentator

  1263. put it,

  1264. when God

  1265. designed the

  1266. original marriage,

  1267. he already

  1268. had Christ

  1269. and the

  1270. church in

  1271. mind.

  1272. This is

  1273. one of

  1274. God's great

  1275. purposes in

  1276. marriage,

  1277. to picture

  1278. the relationship

  1279. between Christ

  1280. and his

  1281. redeeming people

  1282. forever.

  1283. It's like

  1284. God had

  1285. planned out

  1286. the grand

  1287. plan.

  1288. The grand

  1289. plan was to

  1290. bring a

  1291. people,

  1292. unite his

  1293. son to

  1294. his spouse,

  1295. the bride

  1296. of Christ,

  1297. the church,

  1298. for all of

  1299. eternity,

  1300. in his

  1301. presence,

  1302. where they

  1303. would enjoy

  1304. the presence

  1305. of God,

  1306. they would

  1307. enjoy a

  1308. relationship,

  1309. a mutual

  1310. love,

  1311. for all of

  1312. eternity,

  1313. and they're

  1314. like,

  1315. okay,

  1316. so in the

  1317. meantime,

  1318. how do we

  1319. reveal something

  1320. of that so

  1321. that people can

  1322. grasp that

  1323. which is

  1324. profoundly

  1325. ungraspable,

  1326. graspable,

  1327. whatever that

  1328. word is.

  1329. How do we

  1330. do that?

  1331. Marriage,

  1332. between a

  1333. man or

  1334. woman.

  1335. That'll be

  1336. the picture

  1337. that will

  1338. reveal the

  1339. reality.

  1340. Marriage,

  1341. as the

  1342. Bible

  1343. describes it,

  1344. because of

  1345. Christ and

  1346. what he has

  1347. done for us,

  1348. is not

  1349. inherently

  1350. oppressive at

  1351. all.

  1352. Paul shows

  1353. us that even

  1354. on earth,

  1355. Jesus did

  1356. not use his

  1357. power to

  1358. oppress us,

  1359. but he

  1360. sacrificed

  1361. everything to

  1362. bring us

  1363. into union

  1364. with him.

  1365. This deeply,

  1366. deeply impacts

  1367. marriage on a

  1368. practical level.

  1369. If God

  1370. had the

  1371. gospel of

  1372. salvation through

  1373. Jesus in

  1374. mind when he

  1375. established

  1376. marriage,

  1377. then marriage

  1378. flourishes

  1379. to the

  1380. degree it

  1381. follows that

  1382. pattern of

  1383. God's

  1384. self-giving

  1385. love in

  1386. Christ.

  1387. What Paul

  1388. is saying

  1389. is that

  1390. marriage is

  1391. not inherently

  1392. oppressive and

  1393. restrictive,

  1394. nor are its

  1395. demands

  1396. overwhelming.

  1397. Feeling stuck

  1398. in your

  1399. marriage?

  1400. or Paul

  1401. says,

  1402. you do

  1403. for your

  1404. spouse

  1405. what God

  1406. did for

  1407. you in

  1408. Jesus and

  1409. the rest

  1410. will follow.

  1411. The mystery

  1412. of marriage

  1413. is that the

  1414. gospel of

  1415. Jesus and

  1416. marriage actually

  1417. explain one

  1418. another.

  1419. When God

  1420. invented

  1421. marriage,

  1422. he already

  1423. had the

  1424. saving work

  1425. of Jesus

  1426. in mind.

  1427. So is

  1428. the purpose

  1429. of marriage

  1430. to deny

  1431. your interest

  1432. for the

  1433. good of

  1434. your family

  1435. and society

  1436. at large,

  1437. or is it

  1438. to assert

  1439. your interest

  1440. for the

  1441. fulfillment

  1442. of yourself?

  1443. Which one

  1444. is it?

  1445. Because

  1446. traditional

  1447. and modern

  1448. marriages

  1449. puts a

  1450. choice

  1451. between

  1452. those two

  1453. things.

  1454. The Bible

  1455. does not

  1456. present

  1457. marriage

  1458. as a

  1459. choice

  1460. between

  1461. fulfillment

  1462. and

  1463. sacrifice.

  1464. Christianity

  1465. sees marriage

  1466. as mutual

  1467. fulfillment

  1468. through

  1469. mutual

  1470. sacrifice.

  1471. Jesus

  1472. humbled

  1473. himself,

  1474. lay

  1475. aside

  1476. his

  1477. glory

  1478. and

  1479. gave

  1480. himself

  1481. over

  1482. to

  1483. death

  1484. to

  1485. save

  1486. us

  1487. and

  1488. to

  1489. make

  1490. us

  1491. his.

  1492. And

  1493. now

  1494. we

  1495. give

  1496. ourselves

  1497. up.

  1498. We

  1499. die

  1500. to

  1501. ourselves

  1502. first

  1503. when we

  1504. repent

  1505. and believe

  1506. the gospel

  1507. and later

  1508. as we

  1509. submit to

  1510. his

  1511. will

  1512. day

  1513. by

  1514. day.

  1515. You

  1516. see

  1517. when we

  1518. give

  1519. ourselves

  1520. to

  1521. Jesus

  1522. completely

  1523. surrender

  1524. ourselves

  1525. to

  1526. Jesus

  1527. we

  1528. discover

  1529. it's

  1530. radically

  1531. safe

  1532. radically

  1533. safe

  1534. because

  1535. he has

  1536. already

  1537. shown

  1538. us

  1539. that

  1540. he

  1541. is

  1542. willing

  1543. to

  1544. go

  1545. to

  1546. hell

  1547. and

  1548. back

  1549. for

  1550. us.

  1551. Surrending

  1552. oneself

  1553. to

  1554. Jesus

  1555. does

  1556. not

  1557. mean

  1558. losing

  1559. yourself

  1560. at

  1561. all.

  1562. It

  1563. means

  1564. in

  1565. fact

  1566. gaining

  1567. yourself.

  1568. His

  1569. love

  1570. is

  1571. unconditional

  1572. and

  1573. so

  1574. what

  1575. the

  1576. mystery

  1577. of

  1578. marriage

  1579. does

  1580. is

  1581. it

  1582. reveals

  1583. the

  1584. beauty

  1585. and

  1586. the

  1587. depths

  1588. of

  1589. the

  1590. gospel

  1591. to

  1592. you

  1593. and

  1594. marriage

  1595. will

  1596. drive

  1597. you

  1598. further

  1599. into

  1600. reliance

  1601. on

  1602. it.

  1603. Marriage

  1604. is a

  1605. major

  1606. vehicle

  1607. for the

  1608. gospel's

  1609. remaking

  1610. of your

  1611. heart

  1612. from the

  1613. inside

  1614. out

  1615. and of

  1616. your

  1617. life

  1618. from the

  1619. ground

  1620. up.

  1621. the

  1622. reason

  1623. that

  1624. marriage

  1625. is so

  1626. painful

  1627. and yet

  1628. so

  1629. wonderful

  1630. is

  1631. because

  1632. it

  1633. reflects

  1634. the

  1635. gospel

  1636. which

  1637. is

  1638. both

  1639. painful

  1640. and

  1641. wonderful

  1642. at

  1643. the

  1644. same

  1645. time.

  1646. The

  1647. gospel

  1648. declares

  1649. to all

  1650. of us

  1651. that we

  1652. are more

  1653. sinful

  1654. and evil

  1655. and selfish

  1656. than we

  1657. would ever

  1658. ever

  1659. imagine

  1660. or allow

  1661. us to

  1662. even

  1663. think of

  1664. ourselves

  1665. in that

  1666. way.

  1667. and yet

  1668. at the

  1669. very

  1670. same

  1671. time

  1672. we

  1673. are

  1674. more

  1675. loved

  1676. and

  1677. accepted

  1678. in

  1679. Jesus

  1680. Christ

  1681. than

  1682. we

  1683. ever

  1684. dreamed

  1685. that

  1686. we

  1687. would

  1688. ever

  1689. be

  1690. loved.

  1691. And

  1692. that's

  1693. the

  1694. only

  1695. kind

  1696. of

  1697. relationship

  1698. that

  1699. will

  1700. ultimately

  1701. transform

  1702. us

  1703. because

  1704. love

  1705. without

  1706. truth

  1707. of who

  1708. we

  1709. are

  1710. is

  1711. actually

  1712. weak.

  1713. It

  1714. affirms

  1715. us

  1716. in all

  1717. of our

  1718. faults

  1719. in all

  1720. of our

  1721. failings

  1722. and there's

  1723. no

  1724. change.

  1725. Truth

  1726. without

  1727. love

  1728. is

  1729. harsh

  1730. because

  1731. it gives

  1732. us

  1733. information

  1734. we just

  1735. frankly

  1736. do not

  1737. want to

  1738. hear

  1739. and

  1740. can't

  1741. hear.

  1742. And so

  1743. it

  1744. crushes

  1745. us.

  1746. But

  1747. God's

  1748. saving

  1749. love

  1750. in

  1751. Christ

  1752. is

  1753. marked

  1754. by

  1755. both

  1756. radical

  1757. truthfulness

  1758. about

  1759. who

  1760. we

  1761. are

  1762. and

  1763. yet

  1764. also

  1765. radical

  1766. unconditional

  1767. love

  1768. commitment

  1769. to us

  1770. even

  1771. though

  1772. we

  1773. are

  1774. who

  1775. we

  1776. are.

  1777. The

  1778. merciful

  1779. commitment

  1780. strengthens

  1781. us to

  1782. see the

  1783. truth about

  1784. ourselves

  1785. and to

  1786. change.

  1787. The

  1788. conviction

  1789. and

  1790. repentance

  1791. moves us

  1792. to cling

  1793. to and

  1794. rest in

  1795. God's

  1796. mercy

  1797. and

  1798. grace

  1799. and

  1800. love.

  1801. And so

  1802. the hard

  1803. times of

  1804. marriage

  1805. drive us

  1806. to experience

  1807. more of

  1808. this

  1809. transforming

  1810. love of

  1811. God

  1812. and a

  1813. good

  1814. marriage

  1815. will always

  1816. be a

  1817. place

  1818. where we

  1819. experience

  1820. this kind

  1821. of transforming

  1822. love.

  1823. We'll

  1824. experience

  1825. both.

  1826. The gospel

  1827. can fill

  1828. our hearts

  1829. with God's

  1830. love so

  1831. that we can

  1832. handle it

  1833. when our

  1834. spouse fails

  1835. to love us

  1836. as we think

  1837. they should

  1838. love us

  1839. or when

  1840. they point

  1841. out the

  1842. falls and

  1843. the

  1844. failures.

  1845. You see

  1846. the security

  1847. of God's

  1848. love means

  1849. that we

  1850. can speak

  1851. to our

  1852. spouse's

  1853. sins and

  1854. flaws

  1855. while also

  1856. loving and

  1857. accepting them

  1858. fully because

  1859. we are already

  1860. loved and

  1861. accepted fully

  1862. in Jesus.

  1863. And when

  1864. our spouse

  1865. experiences that

  1866. same kind

  1867. of truthfulness

  1868. but also

  1869. commitment to

  1870. us,

  1871. it enables

  1872. them to

  1873. show us

  1874. that same

  1875. kind of

  1876. transforming

  1877. love when

  1878. it's their

  1879. time for

  1880. it too.

  1881. That's the

  1882. profound mystery

  1883. of marriage.

  1884. It helps

  1885. us understand

  1886. the gospel

  1887. in a profound

  1888. and a deep

  1889. way.

  1890. And that's

  1891. the bedrock,

  1892. that's the

  1893. foundation,

  1894. that's the

  1895. pinnacle,

  1896. and that

  1897. foundation

  1898. then gets

  1899. unpacked in

  1900. profound ways

  1901. in the coming

  1902. weeks.

  1903. And next week

  1904. we'll look at

  1905. the power

  1906. that is

  1907. needed to

  1908. live such

  1909. a marriage

  1910. relationship.
