  1. Well, good morning, everyone. If you'd like to keep your Bibles open there, that would be fantastic.

  2. We have, as John has said, we are partway through, quite a way through actually, our series on marriage, where we're looking at Ephesians 5, 21 to 33.

  3. We've seen the mystery of the marriage, the profound mystery of marriage, is that the gospel of Jesus Christ and marriage explain each other.

  4. There are things we would not know about marriage if it was not for the gospel, and there are things about the gospel we wouldn't know if it wasn't for marriage.

  5. Marriage, as I've said a number of times, is a human relationship, but it is the penultimate relationship.

  6. It points to the eternal marriage of Christ and his church.

  7. One of the things I've also said early in this series is that everything that Ephesians 5 says about marriage comes after he tells us about the power that we need in order to be married as God describes it.

  8. And that is, what we need is the indwelling work of the Holy Spirit, pointing us consistently to the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, who surrendered his will for our sake.

  9. And so Ephesians 5, 21, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ, is really the foundational verse before the rest of that gets unpacked in the marriage relationship.

  10. And so what I've been saying consistently is that we need to be captivated by Christ or struck by his selflessness,

  11. because self-centeredness, our self-centeredness, the human heart, is the main havoc-wreaking problem in many marriages,

  12. and is certainly the ever-present enemy in every marriage.

  13. And that's certainly the case with the issue that we're addressing today on the topic of the structure of marriage.

  14. The subject of gender roles in marriage is contentious.

  15. It is certainly controversial.

  16. But more importantly than it being intellectually contentious or culturally contentious and controversial,

  17. it is an issue which for some is deeply personal,

  18. which is why we wanted to put the things we put up there just before Nick's announcement.

  19. It is deeply personal for some people and potentially for you sitting in the room now.

  20. And that is because verses like Ephesians 5 here have been used as weapons of both oppression and rebellion in marriages.

  21. Sin has infected every human culture, every human culture,

  22. in such a way that they have found a way,

  23. those cultures found a way to interpret headship and submission

  24. in a way that has marginalized and oppressed women.

  25. Too many women have suffered abuse at the hands of self-centered men

  26. with a sense of entitlement who have no desire to follow Christ,

  27. but take virtue of this and twist them

  28. and to form unbiblical definitions of headship and submission to pump up their egos.

  29. And in my time as a pastor,

  30. I've had the unpleasant task of confronting that scenario on numerous occasions.

  31. And it's something that we as a church take seriously

  32. and should never, ever put up with.

  33. But despite all of that,

  34. this issue must be explored because it's in Scripture.

  35. It's as God,

  36. God's communicating something that's very important here.

  37. And the other reason we must look at it from God's perspective

  38. is that every single one of us come into marriage

  39. with an idea of how a husband should behave towards his wife

  40. and a wife towards her husband.

  41. We bring that regardless of these verses.

  42. So I'm going to ask you to tune in

  43. and I'm going to ask you to stay with me.

  44. Whether you identify yourself as egalitarian,

  45. a feminist, a traditionalist, a complementarian,

  46. or any other variety of the interpretive spectrum,

  47. the differences between a man and a woman

  48. will become an unavoidable issue in marriage.

  49. You can't dodge it.

  50. And as we look into this issue of the structure of marriage and gender roles,

  51. we must begin with a look at the good that God intended

  52. and how men and women have corrupted that good

  53. and what Jesus has done to redeem it

  54. and therefore how we practice it.

  55. But it's only until we understand that core principles start with

  56. can we then move into the hazardous concepts of authority and submission

  57. and headships.

  58. So I'm leading us this morning into a minefield

  59. and you wait on the sidelines while I walk in there for a moment

  60. and throw myself on the grenades.

  61. So here's the structure for this morning as we go through.

  62. So the background to Ephesians 5 on marriage

  63. is the beginning of the Bible and God creating the material universe.

  64. The first mention of the Bible, of gender in the Bible,

  65. occurs with the very first mention of humanity itself.

  66. Genesis 1, 26, 28,

  67. God created mankind in his own image.

  68. In the image of God, he created them.

  69. Male and female, he created them.

  70. God blessed them and said to them,

  71. Be fruitful and increase in number.

  72. Fill the earth and subdue it.

  73. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky

  74. and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

  75. Now, I'm going to go over some territory.

  76. I've already been here just because it's just helpful to be reminded of it.

  77. The wording of verse 26 is very important.

  78. The words, let us, God saying, let us and our point to the plurality of God.

  79. It's the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

  80. It's the first glimpses of it we get.

  81. But, so God is plural, three in one,

  82. but the words image and likeness are both in the original Hebrew language in singular form.

  83. Plurality of God, but the image and the likeness of God is singular.

  84. The God of the Bible, in whose image humanity is created,

  85. is an eternal community.

  86. And that's the only way, as I said a couple of weeks ago,

  87. the only way you can come to terms with Genesis 2.18.

  88. The Lord God said,

  89. It is not good for a man to be alone.

  90. I will make a suitable helper for him.

  91. So Adam is alone and it's not good.

  92. It's the only thing in the creation account that's described as not good.

  93. That is, Adam is incomplete.

  94. This is before sin entered the world.

  95. And so God declares,

  96. I will make a helper suitable for him.

  97. Now, the woman is created differently than the way Adam was created.

  98. But she is created directly by God.

  99. And there's no sense in the biblical accounts at all

  100. that she is in any way inferior to the male,

  101. in any sense.

  102. Genesis 2.18 calls her a helper suitable for him.

  103. And the English word helper translates the Hebrew word.

  104. I've done this before.

  105. I want to go over it again.

  106. It translates the Hebrew word that is almost always used in the Bible

  107. to describe God's helping of Israel.

  108. The helper is someone who makes up for what is lacking in the other.

  109. In other words, if the word is used of God,

  110. there is no sense at all that God is in any way inferior to Israel.

  111. He is their savior, their rescue, their Lord.

  112. You see, the same word is used not just of God,

  113. but it's also used in the Old Testament to describe the military help.

  114. Like, for instance, military reinforcements of troops,

  115. which if they didn't get the reinforcements,

  116. the battle would be lost.

  117. So the woman is not a domestic assistant.

  118. The woman is a strong helper.

  119. She is a savior friend to the male, to the man.

  120. And so even right at the very beginning of Genesis,

  121. men and women are created with absolute equality.

  122. Both are made in the image of God.

  123. Both are equally blessed.

  124. Both are equally commissioned to have dominion of the earth,

  125. to exercise authority over the earth.

  126. Both.

  127. What this means is that men and women together,

  128. in full participation together,

  129. carry out God's mandate to rule the world.

  130. But God then tells them,

  131. straight after creating the man and male and female,

  132. he tells them to be fruitful and fill the earth.

  133. That is, that mandate there is a mandate to procreate,

  134. and it's a mandate that reflects God's own boundless,

  135. life-giving creativity.

  136. The God who is a source of life,

  137. his mandate is to reflect his life-giving creativity

  138. in the procreation of children.

  139. And it's a mandate,

  140. still to this day,

  141. whatever you think about views of gender,

  142. that we have to carry out in complementary union.

  143. None of us by ourselves have the ability

  144. to fulfil that mandate.

  145. So these verses strongly suggest

  146. that the sexes, male and female,

  147. are equal in dignity and worth,

  148. but also different,

  149. and they are complementary to one another.

  150. In fact, the word suitable,

  151. again, feels a bit weak.

  152. The word suitable there in Genesis,

  153. translate a phrase that is,

  154. you could kind of,

  155. you literally translate it as,

  156. like opposite him,

  157. which is another way of saying,

  158. God created woman

  159. who is just like the man,

  160. but also opposite to the man.

  161. And so when the woman is brought to the man

  162. in the first marriage ceremony,

  163. Adam doesn't go,

  164. whoa, humdinger.

  165. He actually,

  166. it's a poetry language of flesh of my flesh

  167. and bone of my bone.

  168. It's a language which goes,

  169. you are like me,

  170. and yet you're different than me.

  171. You are mysterious,

  172. but I'm drawn to you.

  173. If you like,

  174. they are two pieces of a puzzle.

  175. They fit together

  176. because they're not exactly alike,

  177. nor are they randomly different.

  178. They complete each other.

  179. And so what the Bible teaches us

  180. is that our gender

  181. is not incidental

  182. to our humanness,

  183. but it actually constitutes

  184. its very essence.

  185. It goes right down

  186. into the very core

  187. of who you are,

  188. into every cell of who you are.

  189. And what that means is

  190. we cannot understand ourselves

  191. if we try to ignore the way

  192. that God has designed us.

  193. Now, one of the first,

  194. ironically,

  195. one of the first feminist studies

  196. that argued for the irreducible

  197. gender indifference

  198. was Carol Gilligan's

  199. A Different Voice,

  200. 1980s,

  201. early 1980s,

  202. I think it was written.

  203. It's been described

  204. as a little book

  205. that started a revolution,

  206. translated in over 20 different languages,

  207. a New York Times bestseller,

  208. continues to be used today.

  209. Now, Gilligan,

  210. a Jewish feminist,

  211. argued against

  212. what was happening

  213. in her circle

  214. she was arguing

  215. against social theories

  216. that tried to emphasise

  217. a gender indifference,

  218. that if there was any differences,

  219. that they were only superficial differences,

  220. that really were superficial differences

  221. based on culture and social constructs.

  222. what she insisted,

  223. with science,

  224. with science,

  225. with research,

  226. that female psychology development,

  227. psychological development,

  228. their motivations

  229. and even moral reasoning

  230. were different than those of males.

  231. women

  232. were different than those of them.

  233. She said you could see it

  234. right from the get-go

  235. from before they could even speak.

  236. And she argued

  237. absolutely convincingly

  238. amongst other things

  239. that while men seek maturity

  240. by detaching themselves relationally,

  241. becoming independent,

  242. women see themselves maturing

  243. as they attach themselves

  244. and become interdependent

  245. relationally.

  246. She said that's the irreducible differences

  247. between the two

  248. in summary form.

  249. And I would have to say

  250. that what Gilligan,

  251. whether she realised it or not,

  252. observed about gender difference

  253. is clearly played out

  254. in Genesis 3,

  255. negatively,

  256. where man and woman,

  257. they rebel against God's design

  258. and his rule

  259. and the immediate

  260. and catastrophic

  261. change

  262. in their unity

  263. between them

  264. is just

  265. beyond comprehension.

  266. Immediately,

  267. rather than a oneness

  268. and a union

  269. and a complementing

  270. of one another,

  271. there is blame shifting

  272. and finger pointing

  273. and accusation.

  274. instead of

  275. the difference

  276. being a source

  277. of completion

  278. of one another

  279. and joy for one another,

  280. it becomes

  281. an occasion

  282. for oppression

  283. and exploitation.

  284. The woman

  285. remains

  286. dependent

  287. and desirous

  288. of her husband.

  289. Her curse,

  290. you might notice

  291. up there,

  292. is a relational curse.

  293. You will desire

  294. your husband

  295. but he will rule

  296. it over you

  297. and his protection

  298. and love

  299. becomes a selfish lust

  300. and an exploitation

  301. of her.

  302. He will dominate her.

  303. The man,

  304. his curse,

  305. a desire

  306. to detach himself

  307. from relationally

  308. and set his course

  309. as an independent person

  310. to dominate

  311. and rule the world,

  312. his curse is

  313. your work

  314. will be your burden.

  315. The thing

  316. that you think

  317. will be your salvation

  318. will exploit you

  319. and dominate you

  320. and likewise

  321. for the woman,

  322. the thing

  323. that you think

  324. will be your salvation

  325. will dominate you

  326. and exploit you.

  327. What,

  328. the whole point

  329. of this

  330. is to see

  331. the equality

  332. and the differences

  333. but also

  334. to see

  335. that

  336. the problem

  337. in marriage

  338. is not

  339. Ephesians 5.

  340. The problem

  341. is not

  342. God's design.

  343. The problem

  344. is sin.

  345. and the

  346. profound

  347. self-centeredness

  348. of the human heart

  349. that grabs

  350. hold

  351. of Ephesians 5

  352. and says

  353. I can use

  354. this as a weapon.

  355. So,

  356. let's unpack

  357. how we,

  358. therefore,

  359. if marriage

  360. is a picture,

  361. if it meant

  362. to display,

  363. reflect a greater glory,

  364. let's look

  365. at how we do

  366. that in marriage.

  367. Ephesians 5.

  368. tells us

  369. that this is,

  370. in fact,

  371. the profound

  372. mystery of marriage

  373. between a man

  374. and a woman.

  375. It's a living

  376. illustration

  377. of the relationship

  378. between,

  379. the saving

  380. relationship

  381. between

  382. Christ

  383. and his church.

  384. And so,

  385. when

  386. Ephesians 5

  387. talks about

  388. specific roles,

  389. what is happening

  390. here

  391. is it's

  392. revealing

  393. something

  394. magnificent

  395. and about

  396. God.

  397. And what

  398. we discover

  399. is that

  400. Jesus

  401. is the

  402. pattern

  403. for both

  404. genders

  405. and both

  406. roles.

  407. First of all,

  408. we see it

  409. in the submission

  410. of Jesus.

  411. Philippians 2,

    Philippians 2:5–11

  412. verses 5 to 11,

  413. celebrate

  414. that although

  415. Jesus was

  416. equal with

  417. God,

  418. he entered

  419. himself of

  420. his glory

  421. and took

  422. on the role

  423. of a servant.

  424. And these

  425. verses teach

  426. quite clearly

  427. the equality

  428. of the father

  429. and the son,

  430. but also

  431. the voluntary

  432. submission

  433. of the son

  434. to the

  435. father

  436. to secure

  437. our salvation

  438. for the

  439. glory of

  440. the father.

  441. Nowhere

  442. in the

  443. New Testament

  444. are we

  445. told in

  446. any way,

  447. hinted at

  448. in any

  449. way,

  450. the

  451. God,

  452. the

  453. father

  454. coerced,

  455. forced,

  456. manipulated,

  457. or subjugated

  458. the son

  459. in any

  460. way

  461. whatsoever.

  462. His

  463. submission,

  464. the submission

  465. of the

  466. son

  467. is wholly

  468. voluntary.

  469. It was

  470. his gift

  471. to his

  472. father.

  473. And the

  474. father

  475. accepts

  476. the gift

  477. according to

  478. Philippians

  479. to,

  480. and exalts

  481. the son

  482. to the

  483. highest

  484. place.

  485. In other

  486. words,

  487. what happens

  488. is each

  489. exists to

  490. please the

  491. other,

  492. to exalt

  493. the other,

  494. to love

  495. and honour

  496. the other.

  497. and so

  498. there's

  499. this

  500. reciprocal,

  501. the

  502. love and

  503. honour

  504. are given,

  505. they are

  506. accepted,

  507. and they

  508. are given

  509. again.

  510. And in

  511. no sense

  512. at all

  513. from

  514. Philippians

  515. 2,

  516. is the

  517. submission,

  518. the voluntary

  519. submission of

  520. Jesus,

  521. an assault

  522. on his

  523. dignity or

  524. his divinity

  525. in any way

  526. whatsoever.

  527. it was

  528. in fact

  529. the path,

  530. it was

  531. the path

  532. to the

  533. father giving

  534. him greater

  535. glory.

  536. This

  537. is the

  538. vibrant

  539. life of

  540. the

  541. trinity.

  542. The

  543. father and

  544. son

  545. relationship

  546. is a

  547. pattern of

  548. the

  549. relationship

  550. between

  551. the

  552. husband

  553. to

  554. wife.

  555. Submission

  556. in marriage

  557. is a

  558. gift

  559. offered

  560. by the

  561. wife

  562. to the

  563. husband

  564. for her

  565. greater

  566. glory.

  567. But

  568. Jesus is

  569. also the

  570. pattern for

  571. the husband.

  572. It would

  573. be a

  574. mistake,

  575. I think,

  576. it would be a

  577. mistake,

  578. and husbands,

  579. you need to

  580. hear this,

  581. it's a

  582. mistake to

  583. see that

  584. it takes

  585. an equal

  586. degree of

  587. submission

  588. for men

  589. to submit

  590. to their

  591. roles as

  592. servant

  593. leaders.

  594. Particularly

  595. if we

  596. see ourselves

  597. maturing by

  598. detachment

  599. and

  600. independence.

  601. you see,

  602. what Jesus

  603. does in

  604. his life,

  605. in his

  606. ministry,

  607. in his

  608. teaching,

  609. is he

  610. doesn't give

  611. us a

  612. different

  613. definition

  614. of

  615. leadership,

  616. he doesn't

  617. give us an

  618. alternative,

  619. what he

  620. does is he

  621. actually reveals

  622. the true

  623. definition

  624. of what

  625. leadership

  626. actually is

  627. in every

  628. sense,

  629. in all

  630. leadership,

  631. all

  632. leadership

  633. is.

  634. greatness is

  635. the one

  636. who is

  637. most

  638. self-effacing,

  639. most

  640. sacrificial,

  641. most

  642. devoted to

  643. the good

  644. of the

  645. other.

  646. A famous

  647. passage,

  648. John 13,

  649. Jesus

  650. washes

  651. these

  652. disciples'

  653. feet.

  654. servant,

  655. and what's

  656. famous about

  657. it is that

  658. the master,

  659. the one

  660. that they

  661. have become

  662. to know

  663. as the

  664. Lord,

  665. becomes

  666. the servant,

  667. takes on

  668. the role

  669. of the

  670. lowest

  671. activity

  672. of a

  673. servant

  674. in Jesus'

  675. culture,

  676. to wash

  677. the feet

  678. of those

  679. who were

  680. superior.

  681. And what

  682. he demonstrates

  683. here in the

  684. most dramatic

  685. way is that

  686. authority and

  687. leadership mean

  688. that you become

  689. the servant.

  690. You die to

  691. serve in

  692. order to

  693. love and

  694. to serve

  695. others.

  696. As Jesus

  697. tells us in

  698. Mark 10,

  699. he did not

  700. come to be

  701. served but

  702. to serve

  703. and to

  704. serve to

  705. the point

  706. of surrendering

  707. his life

  708. to death.

  709. That much

  710. of a

  711. sacrifice.

  712. And so

  713. what Jesus

  714. reveals

  715. directly from

  716. the God

  717. head,

  718. the design

  719. of creation

  720. is that

  721. all

  722. authority

  723. is

  724. servant

  725. authority.

  726. Not some

  727. of it,

  728. all

  729. authority

  730. is

  731. servant.

  732. There is

  733. no other

  734. definition

  735. except one

  736. that's

  737. redefined

  738. by sin.

  739. Any

  740. exercise

  741. of authority

  742. and power

  743. to please

  744. or advance

  745. yourself

  746. is in

  747. effect

  748. an

  749. abdication

  750. of

  751. authority

  752. and

  753. leadership.

  754. That's

  755. what it

  756. is.

  757. It's an

  758. abdication

  759. of authority

  760. and leadership.

  761. And so

  762. in Ephesians

  763. 5,

  764. the husband

  765. submits

  766. to the

  767. role of

  768. servant

  769. leader

  770. who uses

  771. his authority

  772. and his

  773. power

  774. to express

  775. a love

  776. that does

  777. not even

  778. stop

  779. at dying

  780. for his

  781. beloved.

  782. That's

  783. headship

  784. in

  785. Ephesians

  786. 5.

  787. In other

  788. words,

  789. when you

  790. step back

  791. and you

  792. look at

  793. Ephesians

  794. 5,

  795. both

  796. headship

  797. and

  798. submission,

  799. both husband

  800. and wife

  801. get to

  802. play the

  803. role of

  804. Jesus

  805. in their

  806. marriage.

  807. Jesus

  808. in his

  809. sacrificial

  810. submission

  811. or Jesus

  812. in his

  813. sacrificial

  814. authority

  815. to their

  816. spouse.

  817. So,

  818. how do

  819. we work

  820. against

  821. sin,

  822. which

  823. happened in

  824. the Garden

  825. of Eden,

  826. where the

  827. oneness,

  828. because of

  829. sin,

  830. there's

  831. separation

  832. and fear,

  833. lack of

  834. vulnerability,

  835. cover up.

  836. What does it

  837. look like in

  838. practice?

  839. What is this

  840. gender role

  841. and difference?

  842. What does it

  843. mean in

  844. actual

  845. practice?

  846. Now,

  847. without your

  848. pen and

  849. your paper,

  850. because,

  851. actually,

  852. don't do

  853. that,

  854. because I'm

  855. not going

  856. to give

  857. you a

  858. list at

  859. all.

  860. This is,

  861. in fact,

  862. where it's

  863. incredibly

  864. frustrating for

  865. those who

  866. want lists,

  867. for those who

  868. want rules,

  869. for those who

  870. want just a

  871. job description.

  872. You know,

  873. Steve,

  874. could you whip

  875. out a job

  876. description and

  877. just print one

  878. out and send

  879. us to it

  880. tomorrow and

  881. tell me what

  882. my role is.

  883. This is where

  884. the Bible

  885. gives us,

  886. I mean,

  887. it tells us

  888. this and

  889. doesn't give

  890. us any

  891. details.

  892. It's what

  893. it looks

  894. like.

  895. Nowhere,

  896. nowhere anywhere

  897. in the Bible

  898. does it say

  899. that a wife

  900. should stay

  901. at home,

  902. never have

  903. a career,

  904. be responsible

  905. for the

  906. childcare and

  907. the cooking.

  908. Neither does

  909. it say

  910. husbands are

  911. the breadwinners,

  912. they're to do

  913. the home

  914. maintenance,

  915. manage the

  916. finances and

  917. choose the

  918. family car.

  919. Nowhere at

  920. all does

  921. it say that,

  922. at all.

  923. Any such

  924. stereotypes

  925. are entirely

  926. culturally

  927. driven.

  928. They are

  929. not the

  930. definition of

  931. the

  932. traditional

  933. Christian

  934. marriage at

  935. all in

  936. any way.

  937. In fact,

  938. in Jesus'

  939. time,

  940. there's no

  941. way those

  942. cultural

  943. stereotypes

  944. would have

  945. worked.

  946. The cultural

  947. stereotypes that

  948. we think in

  949. Western

  950. civilisation are

  951. traditional

  952. cultural

  953. marriage,

  954. traditional

  955. Christian

  956. marriage,

  957. arose out

  958. of

  959. enlightenment

  960. and the

  961. industrialised

  962. age.

  963. We're

  964. flocking to

  965. the city

  966. and for

  967. the first

  968. time in

  969. history,

  970. the man

  971. gets up

  972. or someone

  973. gets up

  974. and has

  975. got to

  976. go to

  977. work in

  978. a factory.

  979. Well,

  980. who looks

  981. after the

  982. kids?

  983. You can't

  984. take them

  985. to the

  986. factory.

  987. Before

  988. the

  989. industrialised

  990. age,

  991. in an

  992. agrarian

  993. culture,

  994. both husband

  995. and wife

  996. were in

  997. the

  998. paddock,

  999. as you'll

  1000. find in

  1001. most farms

  1002. today.

  1003. They're both

  1004. in the

  1005. paddock.

  1006. They're both

  1007. doing,

  1008. well,

  1009. they didn't

  1010. have cars,

  1011. you know,

  1012. fixing the

  1013. cart or the

  1014. camel or

  1015. whatever it

  1016. is.

  1017. They're both

  1018. doing that

  1019. work.

  1020. You see,

  1021. the Bible

  1022. was written

  1023. for all

  1024. cultures

  1025. across the

  1026. centuries,

  1027. and so

  1028. any rigid

  1029. cultural

  1030. gender roles

  1031. have no

  1032. biblical

  1033. warrant at

  1034. all.

  1035. If you're

  1036. feeling guilty

  1037. at all

  1038. about any

  1039. of that

  1040. stuff,

  1041. you should

  1042. not.

  1043. The Bible

  1044. allows for

  1045. freedom in

  1046. the particulars

  1047. while still

  1048. upholding the

  1049. principle.

  1050. The basic

  1051. roles of

  1052. leader and

  1053. helper

  1054. are binding,

  1055. or if you

  1056. like,

  1057. the basic

  1058. function of

  1059. leader and

  1060. helper are

  1061. binding.

  1062. people

  1063. must work

  1064. out for

  1065. themselves

  1066. how this

  1067. is expressed

  1068. in their

  1069. marriage.

  1070. The very

  1071. process of

  1072. actually going

  1073. through that

  1074. is what I

  1075. think is part

  1076. of what it

  1077. means to

  1078. honour your

  1079. gender

  1080. differences.

  1081. rather than

  1082. just walking

  1083. into it,

  1084. which most

  1085. of us do,

  1086. walk into

  1087. marriage just

  1088. assuming the

  1089. roles that

  1090. we've inherited

  1091. without giving

  1092. it any thought

  1093. whatsoever as

  1094. to what the

  1095. biblical structure

  1096. of it might

  1097. be.

  1098. And so,

  1099. husbands, if I

  1100. can speak to

  1101. you,

  1102. some of

  1103. us may

  1104. need to

  1105. work on

  1106. the leader

  1107. part of

  1108. being a

  1109. servant

  1110. leader.

  1111. That is,

  1112. we're more

  1113. likely to

  1114. give in and

  1115. just go,

  1116. yeah,

  1117. whatever,

  1118. whatever,

  1119. whatever,

  1120. whatever.

  1121. And therefore,

  1122. when we do

  1123. that, we're

  1124. abdicating to

  1125. the wife to

  1126. make the

  1127. decision.

  1128. Dig down

  1129. our heart,

  1130. we just

  1131. don't want to

  1132. have to go

  1133. there.

  1134. We don't

  1135. want to take

  1136. the responsibility.

  1137. And so,

  1138. for some

  1139. of us,

  1140. that's what

  1141. we need

  1142. to do.

  1143. For me,

  1144. I've had to

  1145. work on

  1146. the servant

  1147. part of

  1148. the servant

  1149. leadership in

  1150. my marriage.

  1151. My

  1152. maleness is

  1153. that I

  1154. tend to

  1155. be, and

  1156. always have

  1157. been,

  1158. someone who

  1159. has looked

  1160. outward and

  1161. looked forward

  1162. in life.

  1163. I tend

  1164. to be quick

  1165. to step

  1166. stand on

  1167. principle,

  1168. to be

  1169. logical in

  1170. my problem

  1171. solving,

  1172. to planning

  1173. a course

  1174. of action

  1175. and getting

  1176. a job

  1177. done.

  1178. And those

  1179. gifts have

  1180. been affirmed

  1181. not just by

  1182. Nat, but

  1183. affirmed by

  1184. people in

  1185. life for me,

  1186. even in my

  1187. very first

  1188. job as a

  1189. 15-year-old.

  1190. gift.

  1191. But even

  1192. those gifts

  1193. must be

  1194. balanced

  1195. because,

  1196. as it

  1197. turns out,

  1198. I should

  1199. never have

  1200. locked in the

  1201. date and

  1202. venue for

  1203. our wedding

  1204. without

  1205. consulting

  1206. that.

  1207. And in

  1208. my

  1209. mildness,

  1210. I can't

  1211. even believe

  1212. it really,

  1213. that I

  1214. did it,

  1215. but in

  1216. my

  1217. mildness,

  1218. I was

  1219. genuinely

  1220. surprised that

  1221. she was

  1222. shocked and

  1223. not affirming

  1224. the decisiveness

  1225. of it.

  1226. Apparently,

  1227. I'm

  1228. frustratingly

  1229. masculine in

  1230. my

  1231. independence.

  1232. And yet,

  1233. Nat has

  1234. continued to

  1235. affirm my

  1236. gifting while

  1237. also on

  1238. many, many

  1239. occasions and

  1240. constantly leaning

  1241. into me to

  1242. help me to

  1243. see the

  1244. impact of

  1245. my giftedness,

  1246. my independence

  1247. on her and

  1248. others to

  1249. balance it

  1250. out.

  1251. And when

  1252. she leans

  1253. into that,

  1254. either

  1255. frustratingly

  1256. or really

  1257. kindly and

  1258. helpfully,

  1259. it doesn't

  1260. matter,

  1261. either way,

  1262. the reason

  1263. that I

  1264. need to

  1265. listen is

  1266. because Nat,

  1267. like no one

  1268. else, has

  1269. experienced the

  1270. negativity, the

  1271. sin, the

  1272. wickedness of

  1273. my unbalanced

  1274. maleness.

  1275. She sees it

  1276. in a way that

  1277. no one else

  1278. does.

  1279. and experience

  1280. it like no

  1281. one else

  1282. does.

  1283. And so she

  1284. could say to

  1285. me,

  1286. you need to

  1287. know how

  1288. this felt.

  1289. and so she

  1290. pushes me and

  1291. pushes me and

  1292. pushes me.

  1293. Can I

  1294. say,

  1295. this is my

  1296. fifth sermon,

  1297. I think, on

  1298. marriage that I've

  1299. done.

  1300. Are we up to

  1301. number six?

  1302. I can't remember.

  1303. Marriage number

  1304. six.

  1305. I think it's

  1306. five.

  1307. I've been doing

  1308. the reporting,

  1309. but Nat and I

  1310. both together

  1311. are behind

  1312. these messages.

  1313. She has

  1314. contributed.

  1315. I bring in the

  1316. Hebrew and the

  1317. biblical stuff,

  1318. but it is the

  1319. worked out

  1320. reality of it

  1321. that is not

  1322. just me and

  1323. my vocation

  1324. and education,

  1325. it is us,

  1326. even if I'm doing

  1327. the reporting.

  1328. so I just

  1329. want to make

  1330. that clear.

  1331. I, as a

  1332. male, have

  1333. needed all,

  1334. I need all

  1335. the help I

  1336. can get.

  1337. And that's

  1338. particularly so

  1339. because I've

  1340. got four people

  1341. who are opposite

  1342. to me in the

  1343. home.

  1344. And God knew

  1345. exactly what I

  1346. needed.

  1347. He knew

  1348. exactly what I

  1349. needed.

  1350. I need all the

  1351. help I can get.

  1352. And what is

  1353. incredible is

  1354. that after

  1355. nearly three

  1356. decades, I

  1357. think, with

  1358. Nat, I've

  1359. learnt to

  1360. look at life

  1361. from her

  1362. perspective.

  1363. Not in the

  1364. same way she

  1365. does, but I

  1366. will find

  1367. myself in

  1368. pastoral

  1369. scenarios and

  1370. a whole range

  1371. of things,

  1372. and I will

  1373. come quicker

  1374. to what

  1375. Nat's view

  1376. might be on

  1377. this scenario.

  1378. I did

  1379. something

  1380. recently

  1381. and I

  1382. listened to

  1383. my

  1384. maleness

  1385. and before

  1386. I got

  1387. home and

  1388. reported to

  1389. Nat, I

  1390. knew exactly

  1391. what I

  1392. should have

  1393. done because

  1394. I knew

  1395. exactly what

  1396. she would

  1397. say.

  1398. And she

  1399. did.

  1400. Of course,

  1401. then my

  1402. sinfulness

  1403. went into

  1404. self-justification

  1405. mode.

  1406. she has

  1407. been a

  1408. strong

  1409. helper to

  1410. save me

  1411. from drifting

  1412. into, on

  1413. the one

  1414. hand, toxic

  1415. masculinity,

  1416. and on the

  1417. other hand,

  1418. from abdicating

  1419. my masculinity

  1420. so that she

  1421. has to pick

  1422. up the

  1423. leadership role.

  1424. So husband

  1425. and wife are

  1426. there to

  1427. complement each

  1428. other.

  1429. And on a

  1430. deeper level,

  1431. we find out

  1432. who we

  1433. really are

  1434. because of

  1435. our spouse.

  1436. Because no

  1437. one can see

  1438. us the way

  1439. they see

  1440. us.

  1441. They see all

  1442. of our sins

  1443. and our

  1444. failings and

  1445. our faults

  1446. and our

  1447. weaknesses like

  1448. no other

  1449. one.

  1450. And they

  1451. experience it,

  1452. they are on

  1453. the receiving

  1454. end of it,

  1455. like no

  1456. other.

  1457. And so

  1458. in marriage,

  1459. as Nick

  1460. said last

  1461. week,

  1462. marriage a

  1463. truth,

  1464. loving

  1465. commitment

  1466. and grace,

  1467. a person

  1468. who is

  1469. like me

  1470. but opposite

  1471. me,

  1472. that person

  1473. is healing

  1474. me.

  1475. They're

  1476. shaping me.

  1477. And it

  1478. goes both

  1479. ways.

  1480. You know,

  1481. recently Nat

  1482. was frustrated

  1483. with an

  1484. issue and

  1485. to do,

  1486. I didn't

  1487. know what

  1488. the issue

  1489. was,

  1490. I actually

  1491. can't be

  1492. who it

  1493. was,

  1494. but there

  1495. was this

  1496. issue where,

  1497. I think it

  1498. was at work

  1499. where she

  1500. needed to

  1501. fire off an

  1502. email and

  1503. she actually

  1504. was so

  1505. passionate

  1506. about it,

  1507. she said,

  1508. I'm just

  1509. going to

  1510. send him

  1511. an email.

  1512. And I

  1513. said,

  1514. hang on a

  1515. bit,

  1516. maybe just

  1517. sleep on

  1518. it for a

  1519. bit.

  1520. Or maybe

  1521. just draft

  1522. something and

  1523. send it to

  1524. me and

  1525. then I'll

  1526. have a look

  1527. at it and

  1528. maybe send

  1529. it tomorrow.

  1530. And she

  1531. did.

  1532. I looked at

  1533. it,

  1534. I came up

  1535. with a few

  1536. edits,

  1537. sent it back

  1538. to her and

  1539. she said to

  1540. me,

  1541. I'm so glad

  1542. that you

  1543. said that to

  1544. me and

  1545. your edits

  1546. were just

  1547. the right

  1548. wording and

  1549. I sent it

  1550. off.

  1551. You see

  1552. what's

  1553. happened

  1554. there?

  1555. Nat

  1556. and I

  1557. swapped

  1558. roles.

  1559. That is,

  1560. she became

  1561. like me in

  1562. the first

  1563. instance and

  1564. I was like

  1565. her, she

  1566. taught me to

  1567. do that.

  1568. She taught

  1569. me to hang

  1570. on a bit,

  1571. sleep on

  1572. it.

  1573. I hope

  1574. I've given

  1575. her a little

  1576. bit more

  1577. than just

  1578. I'm going to

  1579. fire off an

  1580. email.

  1581. But hopefully

  1582. the decisiveness

  1583. at that point

  1584. or taking

  1585. initiative at

  1586. that point

  1587. might be a

  1588. helpful thing,

  1589. I don't know.

  1590. But it

  1591. goes both

  1592. ways.

  1593. Now let me

  1594. just say,

  1595. while the

  1596. practical

  1597. details are

  1598. missing in

  1599. Ephesians 5,

  1600. the principles

  1601. of how

  1602. authority and

  1603. submission

  1604. work out

  1605. are not

  1606. missing.

  1607. So I'm

  1608. going to

  1609. mention

  1610. four things

  1611. and I

  1612. want to

  1613. mention

  1614. them from

  1615. the negative

  1616. of what

  1617. submission and

  1618. headship and

  1619. authority are

  1620. not.

  1621. So first

  1622. of all,

  1623. the husband's

  1624. authority,

  1625. like the

  1626. authority of

  1627. Jesus over

  1628. his church,

  1629. is never

  1630. used to

  1631. please himself

  1632. but only to

  1633. serve the

  1634. interests of

  1635. his wife.

  1636. That is,

  1637. a headship

  1638. does not

  1639. mean a

  1640. husband simply

  1641. makes all

  1642. the decisions

  1643. and it

  1644. certainly

  1645. doesn't mean

  1646. he gets

  1647. his own

  1648. way in

  1649. every

  1650. disagreement.

  1651. Why?

  1652. Because Jesus

  1653. never did

  1654. anything to

  1655. please himself.

  1656. A servant

  1657. leader must

  1658. sacrifice his

  1659. wants and

  1660. his needs

  1661. and particularly

  1662. blokes for

  1663. your own

  1664. personal

  1665. advancement,

  1666. in order to

  1667. build up and

  1668. to please

  1669. your spouse.

  1670. Secondly,

  1671. a wife in

  1672. her submission

  1673. is never

  1674. meant to be

  1675. merely compliant

  1676. but is to

  1677. use her

  1678. resources to

  1679. empower.

  1680. She is to

  1681. be her

  1682. husband's

  1683. most trusted

  1684. friend,

  1685. counsellor,

  1686. and corrector

  1687. as he

  1688. is hers.

  1689. To

  1690. complement

  1691. each other

  1692. means

  1693. husband and

  1694. wife need

  1695. to hear

  1696. each other

  1697. out,

  1698. they need

  1699. to make

  1700. their

  1701. arguments,

  1702. and they

  1703. need to

  1704. discern a

  1705. way forward.

  1706. Now,

  1707. that's

  1708. hard.

  1709. It's

  1710. hard work

  1711. and it

  1712. involves

  1713. loving

  1714. disagreement

  1715. with

  1716. affection

  1717. until you

  1718. sharpen,

  1719. enrich,

  1720. and enhance

  1721. each other

  1722. on multiple

  1723. occasions

  1724. in our

  1725. life together.

  1726. The course

  1727. of action

  1728. that we

  1729. have gone

  1730. as a

  1731. couple

  1732. and that

  1733. I've

  1734. made the

  1735. call on

  1736. to go

  1737. on.

  1738. Nat

  1739. has

  1740. sharpened

  1741. that

  1742. decision,

  1743. hasn't

  1744. ultimately

  1745. changed the

  1746. direction,

  1747. but brought

  1748. so much

  1749. nuance and

  1750. sharpened

  1751. it in

  1752. such a

  1753. way that

  1754. the

  1755. actual,

  1756. if you

  1757. like,

  1758. execution of

  1759. the decision

  1760. has been

  1761. entirely

  1762. hers,

  1763. her making,

  1764. even if

  1765. the decision,

  1766. the direction

  1767. was mine.

  1768. You see,

  1769. the wife

  1770. must bring

  1771. every gift

  1772. and resource

  1773. that she

  1774. has to

  1775. the discussion

  1776. and the

  1777. husband must,

  1778. as any

  1779. wise leader

  1780. should,

  1781. know when

  1782. to allow

  1783. his wife's

  1784. expertise

  1785. to trump

  1786. his own

  1787. and his

  1788. own less

  1789. well-informed

  1790. opinion.

  1791. That is,

  1792. a servant

  1793. leader means,

  1794. and any

  1795. secular book

  1796. on this

  1797. will tell

  1798. you,

  1799. means to be

  1800. a servant

  1801. leader,

  1802. you cannot

  1803. always be

  1804. the smartest

  1805. man in

  1806. the room.

  1807. In fact,

  1808. you ought

  1809. not be.

  1810. Number three,

  1811. Ephesians 5

  1812. does not

  1813. mean a

  1814. wife is

  1815. not to

  1816. give a

  1817. husband

  1818. unconditional

  1819. obedience

  1820. when it

  1821. says the

  1822. words,

  1823. in

  1824. everything.

  1825. No

  1826. human being

  1827. should give

  1828. any other

  1829. human being

  1830. unconditional

  1831. obedience.

  1832. As Peter

  1833. says,

  1834. we must

  1835. obey God

  1836. rather than

  1837. man.

  1838. a wife,

  1839. let me be

  1840. clear on

  1841. this,

  1842. a wife

  1843. should not

  1844. obey or

  1845. aid a

  1846. husband in

  1847. doing things

  1848. that God

  1849. forbids,

  1850. such as

  1851. breaking the

  1852. law,

  1853. or obey

  1854. him in

  1855. abusing

  1856. her in

  1857. any way,

  1858. what's

  1859. safe,

  1860. or any

  1861. form

  1862. whatsoever.

  1863. For

  1864. example,

  1865. if a

  1866. husband

  1867. physically

  1868. abuses

  1869. his wife,

  1870. the strong

  1871. help that

  1872. you become

  1873. in that

  1874. moment,

  1875. that you

  1876. should exercise

  1877. as a

  1878. wife,

  1879. is to

  1880. love and

  1881. forgive your

  1882. husband in

  1883. your heart,

  1884. but you

  1885. should also

  1886. call the

  1887. police and

  1888. have him

  1889. arrested.

  1890. You

  1891. should do

  1892. both.

  1893. Absolutely

  1894. do both.

  1895. It is

  1896. never kind,

  1897. it is

  1898. never loving

  1899. to anyone

  1900. to make

  1901. any form

  1902. of excuse

  1903. for wrong

  1904. behaviour.

  1905. And there

  1906. is no

  1907. sense in

  1908. Ephesians 5

  1909. that the

  1910. husband can

  1911. in any

  1912. way,

  1913. shape,

  1914. form,

  1915. order his

  1916. wife around

  1917. in daily

  1918. life.

  1919. Nothing in

  1920. Ephesians 5

  1921. would lead

  1922. you to

  1923. conclude

  1924. that.

  1925. He has

  1926. no right

  1927. to order

  1928. her to

  1929. wash the

  1930. dishes.

  1931. no right

  1932. to order

  1933. her to

  1934. go to

  1935. work.

  1936. No right

  1937. to order

  1938. her to

  1939. stop

  1940. going to

  1941. work.

  1942. No right

  1943. to order

  1944. her not

  1945. to go to

  1946. church or

  1947. to a

  1948. community

  1949. group.

  1950. He has

  1951. no right

  1952. to order

  1953. her to

  1954. have sex.

  1955. No right

  1956. to order

  1957. her to

  1958. have

  1959. anything

  1960. at all,

  1961. do anything

  1962. at all.

  1963. That's

  1964. not what

  1965. headship

  1966. is.

  1967. Number

  1968. four,

  1969. husbands

  1970. assuming

  1971. the role

  1972. of

  1973. headship

  1974. is only

  1975. done

  1976. for

  1977. purposes

  1978. for

  1979. serving

  1980. your

  1981. wife

  1982. and

  1983. family.

  1984. Can we

  1985. understand

  1986. what

  1987. headship

  1988. is now?

  1989. Can we

  1990. understand

  1991. what the

  1992. authority

  1993. is?

  1994. It's

  1995. only for

  1996. the purpose

  1997. of serving.

  1998. It's

  1999. not for

  2000. dominating

  2001. in any

  2002. way

  2003. whatsoever.

  2004. Headship

  2005. means the

  2006. husband

  2007. can only

  2008. overrule

  2009. if he

  2010. spouse,

  2011. sorry,

  2012. overrule

  2013. his spouse

  2014. if he

  2015. is sure

  2016. that her

  2017. choice

  2018. would be

  2019. destructive

  2020. to her

  2021. or to

  2022. the

  2023. family.

  2024. And I

  2025. would say

  2026. in the

  2027. moment of

  2028. overruling

  2029. you would

  2030. do so

  2031. with the

  2032. counsel of

  2033. others

  2034. before you

  2035. overrule.

  2036. That is

  2037. headship

  2038. is never

  2039. to be used

  2040. selfishly

  2041. to get your

  2042. own way

  2043. about the

  2044. colour of

  2045. the car

  2046. that you're

  2047. going to

  2048. buy.

  2049. who gets

  2050. to hold

  2051. the

  2052. remote

  2053. for TV.

  2054. whether

  2055. you know

  2056. headship

  2057. doesn't

  2058. mean you

  2059. get to

  2060. choose

  2061. whether you

  2062. have the

  2063. night out

  2064. with the

  2065. boys or

  2066. whether you

  2067. should stay

  2068. home and

  2069. help the

  2070. wife with

  2071. the kids

  2072. and the

  2073. washing and

  2074. the kids

  2075. and whatever

  2076. else.

  2077. Headship

  2078. is an

  2079. important and

  2080. a practical

  2081. principle.

  2082. It is a

  2083. very practical

  2084. principle.

  2085. principle.

  2086. It is not

  2087. about

  2088. superiority

  2089. at all.

  2090. It is

  2091. just a

  2092. very

  2093. practical

  2094. principle

  2095. because

  2096. with the

  2097. equality

  2098. of husband

  2099. and wife

  2100. there is

  2101. only two

  2102. votes in

  2103. marriage.

  2104. So how

  2105. does a

  2106. stalemate

  2107. get broken?

  2108. With two

  2109. votes.

  2110. and two

  2111. votes

  2112. without

  2113. someone

  2114. having to

  2115. give way

  2116. and make

  2117. their vote

  2118. null and

  2119. void.

  2120. You see

  2121. in a

  2122. healthy

  2123. marriage

  2124. this

  2125. stalemate

  2126. scenario

  2127. are broken

  2128. because

  2129. each will

  2130. try to

  2131. give the

  2132. other his

  2133. or her

  2134. pleasure.

  2135. that's

  2136. how it's

  2137. broken in

  2138. a healthy

  2139. marriage.

  2140. And in

  2141. that sense

  2142. what it

  2143. means is

  2144. that what

  2145. you discover

  2146. is that

  2147. the more

  2148. that you

  2149. follow this

  2150. pattern

  2151. the whole

  2152. idea of

  2153. headship

  2154. becomes very

  2155. rare indeed.

  2156. in fact

  2157. I would

  2158. say that

  2159. in the

  2160. 27 and

  2161. a half

  2162. years I've

  2163. been married

  2164. this idea

  2165. of the

  2166. exercise of

  2167. my headship

  2168. in our

  2169. marriage

  2170. has happened

  2171. you could

  2172. count them

  2173. you could

  2174. count them

  2175. on two

  2176. hands

  2177. maybe

  2178. most likely

  2179. one hand

  2180. I've had to

  2181. exercise

  2182. headship.

  2183. That's all.

  2184. It's not

  2185. happening

  2186. Monday

  2187. to Sunday.

  2188. It's a

  2189. very rare

  2190. occasion.

  2191. And it's

  2192. an occasion

  2193. when Nat

  2194. and I

  2195. can't agree

  2196. but a

  2197. decision

  2198. must be

  2199. made.

  2200. And in

  2201. one such

  2202. case because

  2203. there are

  2204. some times

  2205. where you

  2206. can't agree

  2207. and you

  2208. can't not

  2209. make a

  2210. decision.

  2211. You know

  2212. like

  2213. husband and

  2214. wife are

  2215. at star

  2216. might

  2217. loggerheads

  2218. as to

  2219. the

  2220. education

  2221. of

  2222. their

  2223. children.

  2224. You

  2225. can't

  2226. not

  2227. make

  2228. a

  2229. decision.

  2230. At

  2231. some

  2232. point

  2233. you're

  2234. going to

  2235. get a

  2236. phone

  2237. call or

  2238. letter

  2239. from the

  2240. government.

  2241. Why are

  2242. your kids

  2243. not enrolled?

  2244. They're 17.

  2245. They haven't

  2246. been to

  2247. school.

  2248. You've

  2249. got to

  2250. make a

  2251. decision.

  2252. in one

  2253. such case

  2254. of that

  2255. stalemate

  2256. it resulted

  2257. in me

  2258. making a

  2259. decision

  2260. and it

  2261. was a

  2262. decision

  2263. that ultimately

  2264. was to

  2265. trust in

  2266. Nat's

  2267. superior

  2268. knowledge and

  2269. experience.

  2270. The stalemate

  2271. was broken

  2272. when I

  2273. went

  2274. actually

  2275. Nat's

  2276. got the

  2277. best

  2278. idea.

  2279. Now

  2280. you might

  2281. say

  2282. well hang

  2283. on a

  2284. bit

  2285. isn't

  2286. that

  2287. just

  2288. another

  2289. way of

  2290. saying

  2291. that the

  2292. stalemate

  2293. was

  2294. ended

  2295. because

  2296. Nat

  2297. made the

  2298. decision?

  2299. Not at

  2300. all.

  2301. Not at

  2302. all.

  2303. I made

  2304. the

  2305. decision

  2306. because

  2307. course

  2308. I did

  2309. not

  2310. change

  2311. my

  2312. view.

  2313. I

  2314. still

  2315. held

  2316. my

  2317. view

  2318. but I

  2319. said

  2320. for the

  2321. sake

  2322. of Nat

  2323. and in

  2324. fact our

  2325. kids at

  2326. this point

  2327. her view

  2328. is the

  2329. best way

  2330. forward.

  2331. It's the

  2332. best

  2333. exercise

  2334. of servant

  2335. leadership.

  2336. And

  2337. we

  2338. endorse

  2339. her

  2340. view

  2341. deciding

  2342. in her

  2343. way

  2344. I

  2345. took

  2346. full

  2347. responsibility

  2348. for that

  2349. decision

  2350. from that

  2351. moment.

  2352. And

  2353. at no

  2354. point

  2355. have I

  2356. ever

  2357. gone back

  2358. and said

  2359. told you

  2360. so.

  2361. Told

  2362. you

  2363. so.

  2364. The

  2365. husband

  2366. is to

  2367. weigh

  2368. the

  2369. wife's

  2370. argument

  2371. in the

  2372. stalemate

  2373. with

  2374. her.

  2375. Get

  2376. his

  2377. wife to

  2378. help

  2379. him

  2380. consider

  2381. and

  2382. primarily

  2383. blokes

  2384. you

  2385. need

  2386. your

  2387. spouse

  2388. to help

  2389. you.

  2390. You

  2391. need

  2392. your

  2393. wife

  2394. to

  2395. help

  2396. you

  2397. consider

  2398. your

  2399. motives

  2400. not

  2401. the

  2402. logic

  2403. of

  2404. your

  2405. arguments

  2406. because

  2407. the

  2408. motive

  2409. that's

  2410. deep

  2411. inside

  2412. of

  2413. your

  2414. heart

  2415. is

  2416. a

  2417. motive

  2418. that's

  2419. going

  2420. to

  2421. push

  2422. you

  2423. towards

  2424. independence

  2425. and

  2426. you

  2427. need

  2428. your

  2429. spouse

  2430. to

  2431. help

  2432. you

  2433. understand

  2434. your

  2435. motives.

  2436. And

  2437. then you

  2438. make a

  2439. decision

  2440. that

  2441. serves

  2442. your

  2443. wife and

  2444. your

  2445. family the

  2446. best.

  2447. So

  2448. servant

  2449. leadership

  2450. works to

  2451. complement

  2452. relational

  2453. independence.

  2454. Headship is

  2455. about sacrifice

  2456. and responsibility.

  2457. So I've

  2458. taken all

  2459. the time

  2460. and I

  2461. just want

  2462. to say

  2463. one last

  2464. thing.

  2465. Where do

  2466. we get

  2467. the power

  2468. for all

  2469. of this?

  2470. And

  2471. especially

  2472. if

  2473. right now

  2474. and I

  2475. can say

  2476. even if

  2477. your spouse

  2478. is not

  2479. on board

  2480. with you

  2481. for this

  2482. right now

  2483. you still

  2484. have the

  2485. power to

  2486. start moving

  2487. in the

  2488. direction

  2489. by God's

  2490. design

  2491. in your

  2492. marriage.

  2493. marriage

  2494. because the

  2495. power that

  2496. comes from

  2497. it is

  2498. ultimately

  2499. not just

  2500. embracing

  2501. each other

  2502. but by

  2503. being embraced

  2504. by the

  2505. ultimate

  2506. other.

  2507. The one

  2508. who is

  2509. ultimately

  2510. different

  2511. to us.

  2512. The

  2513. gender

  2514. differences

  2515. are

  2516. seismic.

  2517. The

  2518. sin in

  2519. our hearts

  2520. tends to

  2521. respond by

  2522. assigning

  2523. moral

  2524. significance

  2525. to those

  2526. differences

  2527. when the

  2528. differences

  2529. are really

  2530. deeply

  2531. temperamental.

  2532. And

  2533. Jesus

  2534. gives us

  2535. the pattern

  2536. to make

  2537. it work

  2538. but also

  2539. the power

  2540. to change

  2541. our hearts

  2542. towards each

  2543. other.

  2544. And that

  2545. power is

  2546. simply this.

  2547. It's the

  2548. gospel.

  2549. You should

  2550. have picked

  2551. this up in

  2552. Ephesians

  2553. when we're

  2554. in Ephesians

  2555. but Jesus

  2556. Christ

  2557. embraced

  2558. his church.

  2559. He

  2560. embraced

  2561. that which

  2562. was completely

  2563. other than

  2564. him.

  2565. Sinful

  2566. nature.

  2567. Sinful

  2568. humanity.

  2569. As

  2570. being

  2571. humans

  2572. we are

  2573. not

  2574. just

  2575. simply

  2576. different

  2577. from

  2578. him.

  2579. We are

  2580. fundamentally

  2581. opposed

  2582. to him

  2583. as

  2584. God.

  2585. And yet

  2586. he took

  2587. on human

  2588. flesh

  2589. and he

  2590. drew

  2591. close.

  2592. He

  2593. didn't

  2594. exclude

  2595. us by

  2596. simply

  2597. from the

  2598. heights

  2599. of heaven

  2600. casting

  2601. us away

  2602. consigning

  2603. us to

  2604. eternal

  2605. judgment

  2606. for

  2607. rebellion

  2608. against

  2609. him.

  2610. He

  2611. took

  2612. on

  2613. human

  2614. flesh

  2615. and

  2616. embraced

  2617. us

  2618. ultimately

  2619. by dying

  2620. on the

  2621. cross

  2622. in our

  2623. place

  2624. for our

  2625. sin.

  2626. For

  2627. Jesus

  2628. to

  2629. embrace

  2630. hostile

  2631. humanity

  2632. required of

  2633. him the

  2634. greatest

  2635. sacrifice

  2636. of all.

  2637. He had

  2638. to experience

  2639. the rejection

  2640. of his

  2641. father.

  2642. He was

  2643. excluded

  2644. so that

  2645. we could

  2646. be brought

  2647. in.

  2648. And

  2649. sometimes

  2650. maybe too

  2651. often

  2652. spouses

  2653. experience

  2654. betrayal

  2655. rejection

  2656. and attacks

  2657. and the

  2658. easiest thing

  2659. to do

  2660. in that

  2661. moment

  2662. is to

  2663. withdraw

  2664. and leave.

  2665. And in

  2666. some instances

  2667. for your own

  2668. safety you

  2669. do need

  2670. to.

  2671. But the

  2672. place that

  2673. you cling

  2674. to in

  2675. every instance

  2676. where that

  2677. happens

  2678. is the

  2679. knowledge that

  2680. Jesus never

  2681. did.

  2682. And he

  2683. never will.

  2684. He embraced

  2685. us, he

  2686. loves us and

  2687. still does.

  2688. And what that

  2689. means is it

  2690. enables us to

  2691. embrace rather

  2692. than exclude

  2693. our spouse

  2694. with all the

  2695. mysterious and

  2696. often infuriating

  2697. differences there

  2698. are between us.

  2699. in the

  2700. gospel of

  2701. Jesus Christ

  2702. we have

  2703. profound

  2704. security that

  2705. frees us

  2706. from the

  2707. natural human

  2708. impulse

  2709. that seeks

  2710. to despise

  2711. anyone who

  2712. is different

  2713. to us,

  2714. to negate

  2715. it,

  2716. to demean

  2717. it,

  2718. to put it

  2719. down.

  2720. and that's

  2721. especially the

  2722. case our

  2723. spouse.

  2724. Marriage is

  2725. often painful

  2726. and it is

  2727. always complicated

  2728. but it helps

  2729. us grow and

  2730. mature in

  2731. ways that no

  2732. other experience

  2733. in this world

  2734. can produce.

  2735. It also brings

  2736. about deep

  2737. oneness and

  2738. self-knowledge

  2739. and change

  2740. because of

  2741. the profound

  2742. complementarity

  2743. there is

  2744. between the

  2745. sexes.

  2746. The tender

  2747. serving

  2748. authority of

  2749. a husband's

  2750. headship

  2751. and the

  2752. strong

  2753. gracious

  2754. gift of

  2755. a wife's

  2756. submission

  2757. restore us

  2758. to who

  2759. we're meant

  2760. to be

  2761. at the

  2762. very

  2763. creation.

  2764. And by

  2765. accepting

  2766. our gender

  2767. roles and

  2768. operating within

  2769. them we are

  2770. able to

  2771. demonstrate

  2772. to the

  2773. world,

  2774. to the

  2775. unbelieving

  2776. world,

  2777. concepts that

  2778. are so

  2779. counterintuitive

  2780. as to be

  2781. virtually

  2782. completely

  2783. unintelligible

  2784. !

  2785. Concepts of

  2786. God,

  2787. of his

  2788. nature,

  2789. of who he

  2790. is in the

  2791. gospel,

  2792. completely

  2793. unintelligible

  2794. unless they

  2795. are lived

  2796. out by men

  2797. and women

  2798. in Christian

  2799. marriage.
