  1. For giving me this opportunity to be with you all today.

  2. And it's a wonderful pleasure and to say thank you for your continuous partnership and support.

  3. !

  4. Today what I want to share with you is something about my own story,

  5. about what I have been through.

  6. In my own journey as a teenager.

  7. So that goes back to almost 30, 35 years before.

  8. So it's my own story.

  9. Before we open what God has placed in my heart, I would like to pray with you.

  10. Let's quickly pray.

  11. Dear loving God, as we gather this morning to worship and reflect your word,

  12. help us to understand what you are teaching us.

  13. Show us how to respond with love, without limits.

  14. As we think about the familiar story of Samaritan, teach us this morning how to respond.

  15. Thank you, Lord, for our church, this church.

  16. And for the partnership you have given us here, help us to work together in unity, in love, serving others as one body.

  17. Guide us so that we don't just listen, but be changed, be challenged, becoming your people who share your grace with everyone we meet.

  18. In your holy name.

  19. Amen.

  20. Again, church, as I said earlier, thank you for this opportunity that I can stand with you today to share God's word.

  21. My theme of message, today's message is, who is my neighbor?

  22. When the lawyer or the expert in the law asked the question, who is my neighbor?

  23. He wanted to know the limits of responsibility.

  24. What is the limit?

  25. He was asking the right question, but he was asking how far I have to go.

  26. What is the distance I have to go?

  27. Who must I love and who can I ignore?

  28. Who are the people I could love, who are the people I could ignore?

  29. But Jesus did not answer his question.

  30. Jesus was asking a question from him.

  31. And then he simply says to the man, go and do likewise.

  32. So Jesus didn't answer his question directly.

  33. It was a good question.

  34. Before I go further, I want to share a bit of my own story, my own life.

  35. I get asked by churches and people who meet me often what I do and why I do the work I'm involved.

  36. And in short, my story, one of the chapters, starts in this point, 1990, June.

  37. My journey begins in one of the darkest moments of the Sri Lankan Civil War.

  38. If you have known Sri Lanka, the history of Sri Lankan Civil War and internal displacement has been one of the major disasters and man-made disasters of that nation.

  39. In 1990, June, there was a major internal displacement.

  40. Hundreds of thousands were forced from their homes to flee.

  41. Many didn't survive.

  42. Many of my friends didn't survive.

  43. Bombings, shelling, that followed that particular week, starting from June 14th.

  44. My family and I were among those who fled on that night.

  45. I want to take a moment to share with you my own story, in a way.

  46. In a very difficult time of my teenage years, in my journey, there were seven churches along the way of fleeing of around 300 kilometers.

  47. Seven churches who stepped up, making an impact in my life.

  48. I may not agree with the doctrines of these churches.

  49. I don't agree with those certain doctrines those churches shared.

  50. But their actions and their response was profound.

  51. The church has the responsibility and the unique ability, even today in Australia,

  52. to stand with those who have lost everything.

  53. They have lost the people who have lost their hope.

  54. People have lost everything.

  55. The church has the ability to make a difference.

  56. Their actions are part of why I now walk alongside with those who are forcibly displaced

  57. or those who have become refugees.

  58. And I've been involved in refugee ministry since I left my high school, I don't know, 30 years ago, 32 years ago.

  59. And since I left, I've been involved in refugee work.

  60. And when I talk about these seven churches in my journey, I want to start talking about the church one.

  61. When we fled and we walked probably around 15 kilometers and we came to a small Pentecostal congregation in a village.

  62. And I still remember the pastor opened their home and they fed us on that day.

  63. We were complete strangers to them.

  64. And they opened their home and they fed us on that day, on that night when we were praying.

  65. And the devotional reading was from Isaiah 43, verse 2.

    Isaiah 43:2

  66. Verse 2, when you walk through the fire, you will not be burned.

  67. And those words became very real when we heard that our home was completely burned down.

  68. My parents lost their business, our home, everything we lost on that night.

  69. The second church was a pastor who journeyed with us who also fled.

  70. And we came to a point where it was so dangerous for us to go further in our displacement.

  71. And the only way we could do is to cross a particular waterway through sea, the sea waterway.

  72. And we were around 30 of us.

  73. We have to cross.

  74. And many of the young people didn't have any financial means to do that.

  75. And the pastor and his wife, that was their first wedding anniversary.

  76. And the pastor and wife took off their wedding rings and gave it to the boatman and said,

  77. take these young people, save the show.

  78. And that was the second church.

  79. The third church, when we arrived on the other side of the show, it was a Catholic parish in the local area.

  80. And when these people coming by boat in hundreds, these Catholic church on the show,

  81. they rallied the community around, the people around the church area.

  82. And they cooked a meal for that day.

  83. And they served, they didn't have plates, they didn't have any fancy equipments.

  84. And they served us in this big teak leaves.

  85. They served the meal on that day.

  86. It was a very simple meal.

  87. Even today, I sort of wonder if I could taste the same thing.

  88. And I feel that was a life-saving meal for me on that day.

  89. And my life became sort of as a family wandering in that district for a few months.

  90. And I also remember one morning stepping into another congregation, an apostolic church.

  91. That's what their name.

  92. And the pastor and the wife invited me.

  93. And because I was 16 and I was so frustrated at that day.

  94. And he gave me a New Testament in my hand.

  95. And he said, Jude, you need to start reading the scriptures.

  96. And that New Testament spared my life.

  97. Because that's the time the young teenagers got dragged into becoming child soldiers.

  98. So Sri Lanka had this issue of child soldiers.

  99. And the conversation with that pastor and he sort of giving me that New Testament in my hand

  100. sort of saved me from that temptation of going through this hopelessness and say,

  101. no, I also need to take my arms and fight.

  102. And that point saved me.

  103. And continuing to talk about the other churches.

  104. And another church, complete strangers, they came and gave some money to my dad and say,

  105. on your next leg of your travel to go to the capital, here you are.

  106. And we never knew them.

  107. We never met them.

  108. And they're just complete strangers.

  109. When we came to what we call the military-controlled area,

  110. and we were housed in a school hall, a Christian school hall,

  111. the priest of that school made arrangement for us to sleep in the school hall and made meals.

  112. And to tell you that anyone houses any young people in a strange place like that,

  113. they are subject to military actions.

  114. Because it is a risk that priest took that night to house these young people,

  115. and my family to be safe on that night.

  116. If you have stayed on the street, or if you are outside somewhere,

  117. our life would have been, I would not stand in front of you today to share this.

  118. And then the final about the seventh church,

  119. and we managed to come to the city, and we were there.

  120. And in this particular city, I attended a service,

  121. and then they were glorifying the military actions,

  122. and they prayed for the military.

  123. And I was kind of confused.

  124. And here, one side of the military is killing the people,

  125. and here the church is sort of praying and supporting the whole actions.

  126. But there were individuals and leaders who journeyed with me,

  127. supported me, protected me, where I could stand with you today.

  128. This is my, not a short story.

  129. I thought it would be a short story, but it has become a long story.

  130. Right?

  131. So this is my story.

  132. Right?

  133. So when I want to open the story with you,

  134. what Jesus was sharing,

  135. he was sharing about the lawyer's question.

  136. Right?

  137. And it was a good question.

  138. The intention was good.

  139. The parable in Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  140. begins with the lawyer standing there to test Jesus.

  141. It was not, it was a good question,

  142. but the intention behind the question was not good.

  143. He was actually trying to test Jesus.

  144. He says, teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  145. On the surface, it sounds good,

  146. and Luke's important question,

  147. but Luke's tells us in the passage that he was trying to test.

  148. And Jesus continues.

  149. He responds with a question.

  150. Instead of direct answer,

  151. the lawyer knew the law from A to Z.

  152. And he says,

  153. he responds to Jesus,

  154. love the Lord your God,

  155. love your neighbor as yourself.

  156. And then he asks the question from Jesus,

  157. who is my neighbor?

  158. This reveals the struggle even for us today.

  159. We all, the people know the law.

  160. Even the lawyer knew the law,

  161. but he didn't know the application of the law.

  162. People know the scripture well.

  163. People struggle with the application of the scripture.

  164. People ask good questions based on scriptures.

  165. And one of the questions we all ask about,

  166. today's major question is about migration,

  167. and who comes to this country,

  168. who are they,

  169. and all those questions.

  170. Those are good questions.

  171. The problem is,

  172. are we really looking for the truth,

  173. or we are looking for limits?

  174. And it's easier to look for

  175. what is the limit we can place on things.

  176. But what is the truth is the question.

  177. And based on the parable,

  178. I would like to bring three small reflections for you,

  179. for you to continue to ponder.

  180. The first one is,

  181. the first character is the man on the road.

  182. Most of the time when we read this story,

  183. I think as from our childhood,

  184. we would have read this story a thousand times.

  185. A thousand times we would have read this story.

  186. But,

  187. I would really love you taking a turn,

  188. not to focus on the Samaritan,

  189. but let's start focusing on the other characters.

  190. The man on the road,

  191. Jesus replied,

  192. a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho,

  193. and he fell among robbers,

  194. who stripped him and beat him and departed,

  195. leaving him half dead.

  196. The stranger in need,

  197. Jesus in his story simply said,

  198. a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho.

  199. The man has no name,

  200. there's no name,

  201. there is no ethnic or religious label for this man.

  202. Jesus removes every detail that could be used as an excuse.

  203. He removes all the details of this man.

  204. We only know that man was injured and he was half dead.

  205. The man is suffering and he needed help.

  206. That's all we know from the scripture.

  207. And the pain does not come to a person with permission.

  208. And it doesn't come with a label.

  209. And because I belong to this,

  210. I am suffering.

  211. The pain and suffering to people,

  212. it comes when it comes.

  213. Our focus here is to look at the structure of this parable,

  214. especially the way Jesus removes every identify marker from the man on the road.

  215. Jesus deliberately strips away anything that could be used as an excuse.

  216. The people whom we see,

  217. people whom we journey with,

  218. that most of the time we tend to journey with them

  219. or choose to love them

  220. or choose to support them based on their identity.

  221. And Jesus removes that identity here.

  222. The second group of people we see in the scripture

  223. is the priest and the Levite.

  224. The scripture says,

  225. now by chance a priest was going down that road

  226. and when he saw him,

  227. he passed by on the other side.

  228. So likewise,

  229. a Levite,

  230. when he came to the place

  231. and saw him

  232. and passed on the other side.

  233. And Jesus speaks about this Levite and the priest.

  234. And the scripture very clearly says

  235. they were going down.

  236. They were not going up.

  237. So if you really look at

  238. Jerusalem and Jericho,

  239. Jerusalem is in a higher ground.

  240. It's around 750 meters high.

  241. And Jericho is in the lowest point near the Dead Sea.

  242. And if you read the passage

  243. and if you try to understand the law,

  244. the numbers, chapter 19, verse 11 says,

    Numbers 19:11

  245. whoever touches a dead body

  246. still be unclean for seven days.

  247. That's the scripture says.

  248. The man who knows the law,

  249. the Levite and the priest,

  250. he sees this half dead man

  251. and if he goes and touches

  252. that particular person,

  253. if that body is a dead body

  254. or if that person is a dead man,

  255. he will be defiled.

  256. He will be defiled for seven days.

  257. And if he was going from Jericho to Jerusalem,

  258. the Levite and the priest

  259. will be going over there

  260. to do their religious duties,

  261. to serve in the church

  262. or serve in the temple.

  263. And it was a classic example,

  264. a classic excuse to say,

  265. no, I don't want to touch this person

  266. because if I touch,

  267. I can't go and do my religious duties

  268. in the church, in the temple.

  269. I can't do this.

  270. By law, I cannot do this.

  271. And they were not going to serve

  272. in the temple

  273. because they were coming down.

  274. They were coming from the temple.

  275. They were coming down.

  276. Helping that person

  277. would not stop their service

  278. at the temple

  279. because they have already completed

  280. their part of the work.

  281. And it is, even today,

  282. it's a similar thing.

  283. We kind of come to a place

  284. that we say by law,

  285. by scripture,

  286. by certain limitation,

  287. by policies,

  288. by compliance,

  289. we cannot act,

  290. we cannot do something.

  291. The priest and the Levite

  292. weren't stopped by the law.

  293. They were stopped

  294. by the way they interpreted the law

  295. and used it,

  296. used that particular law

  297. as their excuse.

  298. They were already among,

  299. they were already coming

  300. down from Jerusalem.

  301. Their duties have finished,

  302. their rituals are finished,

  303. so Jesus removes

  304. the law excuse.

  305. It reminds us

  306. today,

  307. even good laws

  308. and traditions

  309. can block you and me

  310. from being compassionate

  311. to the people

  312. who are in need.

  313. The third person

  314. in the story

  315. is a character

  316. we mostly talk about.

  317. But in that also

  318. we leave

  319. some details.

  320. Here,

  321. Jesus talks about

  322. the Samaritan.

  323. The Samaritan journeyed,

  324. came where he was,

  325. and when he saw,

  326. I'm reading from

  327. chapter 10,

  328. verses 33 to 35,

  329. he went to him

  330. and bound

  331. up his wounds,

  332. pouring on oil

  333. and wine,

  334. then set him

  335. on his own animal

  336. and brought him

  337. to an inn

  338. and took care of him.

  339. And the next day,

  340. he took out

  341. two denarii

  342. and gave them

  343. to the innkeeper

  344. saying,

  345. take care of him

  346. and whatever

  347. more you spend,

  348. I will repay you

  349. when I come back.

  350. Jesus introduces

  351. the Samaritan.

  352. This is very shocking

  353. why he has to

  354. introduce a Samaritan.

  355. Why not a Roman?

  356. Because the Romans

  357. were living there.

  358. Why not another

  359. Canaanite person?

  360. Someone else?

  361. Why Jesus has to

  362. use a Samaritan

  363. in this story?

  364. And the Samaritans

  365. and Jews,

  366. they were brothers

  367. centuries ago.

  368. They lived together.

  369. They were under

  370. one kingdom.

  371. They were together.

  372. But the rivalry

  373. grew.

  374. And when you,

  375. after the

  376. Assyrian conquest

  377. of 722 BC,

  378. the rivalry grew

  379. and they

  380. separated.

  381. And Jews

  382. believed

  383. the only

  384. proper place

  385. to worship

  386. was

  387. the temple

  388. in Jerusalem.

  389. And Samaritans

  390. believed

  391. the true place

  392. to worship

  393. is one of the

  394. mountains

  395. in Samaria.

  396. Not in Jerusalem.

  397. The tension

  398. between these

  399. two

  400. became a

  401. theological

  402. division,

  403. theological

  404. arguments.

  405. It turned

  406. violent at times.

  407. They fought

  408. with each other.

  409. Jews

  410. destroyed

  411. the Samaritan

  412. temple

  413. on the

  414. mount

  415. around

  416. 150 years

  417. before

  418. Jesus

  419. told this

  420. story.

  421. And also

  422. Samaritans

  423. also

  424. disrupted

  425. when the

  426. Jews

  427. traveling

  428. to

  429. Jerusalem

  430. for their

  431. pilgrimages,

  432. their

  433. rituals.

  434. When

  435. Jesus

  436. brought

  437. the

  438. Samaritans

  439. in this

  440. story,

  441. Jesus

  442. brings

  443. the story

  444. of compassion

  445. in action.

  446. And the

  447. Bible

  448. says

  449. the

  450. Samaritan,

  451. he

  452. saw him,

  453. he sees

  454. him,

  455. he had

  456. compassion,

  457. and he

  458. went to

  459. him.

  460. I just

  461. want to

  462. underline

  463. these three

  464. things.

  465. And what

  466. we fail

  467. to do

  468. most of

  469. the time,

  470. even in

  471. my life,

  472. in my

  473. walk

  474. with people,

  475. I refuse

  476. to see

  477. what's going

  478. on,

  479. because I

  480. refuse to

  481. see,

  482. I cannot

  483. feel what

  484. they are

  485. going through,

  486. I cannot

  487. move by

  488. compassion,

  489. and because

  490. I can't

  491. see and

  492. feel,

  493. I don't

  494. go to

  495. them.

  496. I stay

  497. out of

  498. that place

  499. because I

  500. refuse to

  501. see it,

  502. I refuse

  503. to move,

  504. and so

  505. I don't

  506. go to

  507. them.

  508. He does

  509. not,

  510. when he

  511. goes to

  512. him,

  513. he did

  514. not ask

  515. the question

  516. about the

  517. ethnicity of

  518. the person

  519. injured,

  520. he did

  521. not ask

  522. the race

  523. of that

  524. person who

  525. is injured,

  526. and he

  527. did not

  528. ask the

  529. question of

  530. the religious

  531. or politics.

  532. And the

  533. scripture says

  534. he acts,

  535. it was not

  536. a triple

  537. zero call

  538. and then

  539. to walk

  540. away,

  541. right?

  542. Today,

  543. if I see

  544. somebody in

  545. need,

  546. and my

  547. easiest

  548. option is

  549. to make

  550. a triple

  551. zero call.

  552. This is

  553. not the

  554. narration

  555. of the

  556. secular

  557. media

  558. today

  559. saying

  560. a good

  561. Samaritan's

  562. act.

  563. When somebody

  564. calls a triple

  565. zero,

  566. today you

  567. will hear

  568. in a secular

  569. media saying

  570. that was

  571. an act

  572. of a good

  573. Samaritan.

  574. So it

  575. was not

  576. that easy

  577. at that

  578. point.

  579. And the

  580. Bible

  581. says he

  582. goes there,

  583. he bandages

  584. the wound,

  585. uses oil

  586. and wine,

  587. puts the

  588. man on

  589. his own

  590. animal,

  591. in his

  592. own donkey,

  593. takes him

  594. to the

  595. inn,

  596. and the

  597. Bible says

  598. he stayed

  599. with him

  600. and cared

  601. for him.

  602. And on

  603. the next

  604. day,

  605. pays

  606. two

  607. denarii.

  608. And if

  609. you really

  610. look at

  611. it,

  612. it's a lot

  613. of money.

  614. It is a lot

  615. of money

  616. in today's

  617. terms.

  618. It's

  619. probably

  620. around two

  621. days of

  622. wages.

  623. And for

  624. the

  625. Samaritan,

  626. that's

  627. a lot

  628. of money.

  629. And he

  630. says,

  631. in the

  632. last part

  633. it says,

  634. promises to

  635. return and

  636. pay if

  637. you have

  638. spent more,

  639. willing to

  640. reimburse.

  641. This is

  642. a costly

  643. ongoing

  644. commitment.

  645. It is

  646. not

  647. something

  648. that you

  649. fix and

  650. run away.

  651. It is an

  652. ongoing

  653. commitment.

  654. This

  655. parable

  656. gives

  657. us

  658. the

  659. love

  660. that we

  661. show

  662. without

  663. limits.

  664. And

  665. faith

  666. is

  667. proven

  668. when it

  669. is

  670. not

  671. safe.

  672. My

  673. faith

  674. is

  675. proven

  676. when it

  677. is

  678. not

  679. safe.

  680. The

  681. faith

  682. is

  683. proven

  684. when it

  685. is

  686. really

  687. costly.

  688. And I

  689. leave

  690. this

  691. part

  692. of

  693. that

  694. in my

  695. conclusion.

  696. When

  697. Jesus

  698. says,

  699. go and

  700. do

  701. likewise,

  702. I want

  703. you to

  704. remember

  705. that

  706. unless

  707. I

  708. see

  709. it,

  710. I

  711. will

  712. not

  713. be

  714. moved.

  715. Unless

  716. I

  717. see

  718. and

  719. moved,

  720. I

  721. will

  722. not

  723. be

  724. able

  725. to

  726. act.

  727. Thank

  728. you.

  729. Thank

  730. you for

  731. giving me

  732. this

  733. opportunity.

  734. Thank you.
