  1. In Pastor Steve's opening sermon to this series called In Christ, he said,

  2. ! If we misunderstand our relationship with Jesus, then we entirely misunderstand what it means to live the Christian life.

  3. ! What it means to live the Christian life.

  4. What it means to be a Christian determines how we live as a Christian.

  5. God gives Christians this understanding in the Bible and in many places.

  6. So we're going to explore some of these passages in this season so that anyone here or tuning in can get a true picture of what a Christian is and of their new life in Christ.

  7. So pray with me and let these words be your own words.

  8. Lord God, from your word, would you reveal all that Christ has done for me?

  9. Please give me a greater confidence in your grace to me, a deeper assurance of my hope in Jesus, and strength from your spirit to live my new life in Christ.

  10. Amen.

  11. Imposter syndrome.

  12. Most of us know what the feeling of imposter syndrome is, even if we don't know the phrase.

  13. It's when we are out of our depth or we feel like a fraud.

  14. You might be performing on stage.

  15. You might be one of a couple who are bringing a newborn baby home for the first time.

  16. And there's no manuals with babies.

  17. You might be writing a report or an essay or a sermon.

  18. At any moment, someone might realize that you don't know what you're doing, that you don't belong.

  19. That feeling can come at any time and in any group in your life, that feeling of being an imposter.

  20. And back when I was first calling myself a Christian, I felt like an imposter.

  21. I was 15 and I was watching my youth leaders live out their lives thinking, I don't live like that.

  22. I must not yet be good enough at being a Christian.

  23. They seemed to never struggle with sins like I did.

  24. I worried that I wasn't really saved.

  25. Whenever I counted my sins, I thought sin still ruled me and not Jesus.

  26. I felt like a Christian imposter.

  27. This misunderstanding is dealt with in Romans 6.

  28. Today's passage in front of us.

  29. It answers the question, what should Christians do about their sin in their life in Christ?

  30. What should Christians do about the sin that persists as they live as Christians?

  31. There are two extreme reactions to this.

  32. Should Christians be just anti-all rules?

  33. If Christians are saved by the unending, unearned grace of God through faith,

  34. then can't they just ignore sin going on in their life or even embrace it?

  35. But Paul starts off Romans 6 by shouting,

  36. by no means!

  37. See, I told you I'd get loud.

  38. By no means!

  39. Shall we go on sinning?

  40. Every Christian in their life has softened a sin that they are aware of

  41. or refused to find sin and root it out in their life.

  42. And we may discover that we've defined ourselves by our sins and our feelings rather than Christ.

  43. That is not allegiance to Christ.

  44. It is giving him our momentary attention while remaining in allegiance to ourselves,

  45. our sins and our feelings.

  46. But what if Christians, at the other extreme,

  47. were only saved through obeying all the rules kind of Christians?

  48. Anti-grace, legalistic believers.

  49. That is not faith at all.

  50. Paul, at the end of our verse,

  51. shouts again,

  52. you are not under the law,

  53. but under grace.

  54. Christians need to be ruled by grace,

  55. not Christian rules.

  56. feeling controlled or mastered by sin leads to despair.

  57. How can I call myself a Christian if I don't act enough like one?

  58. This is not an acceptance of grace.

  59. This is a desire to just get a little bit of help from Christ

  60. and will earn the rest of the way to God.

  61. Have you embraced a Christian identity

  62. that is just about living a little less sinful?

  63. Or is Christ your new identity?

  64. The gospel doesn't support either of these two extreme perspectives.

  65. But as we open the word and go through it in detail,

  66. think about which of those two extremes or misunderstandings

  67. you might be allowing to dismantle the confidence

  68. that you could have being in Christ

  69. like I did when I was first a Christian.

  70. In recent weeks,

  71. we've heard about salvation

  72. and forgiveness in Christ

  73. and justification

  74. with righteousness credited to us

  75. in Christ.

  76. But what do we do about the persisting sin

  77. in our life

  78. while we are in Christ?

  79. What is God's alternative

  80. to Christian imposter syndrome?

  81. Well, Romans 6 is going to show us

  82. that the presence of sin

  83. does not dismantle our salvation,

  84. doesn't rip it up and throw it in a bin,

  85. but that our salvation

  86. dismantles the rule

  87. of sin over us.

  88. So here are my two points

  89. that are going to help us explain

  90. and apply this.

  91. In Christ, our sin is dead

  92. and we have new life.

  93. Point one.

  94. Point two.

  95. Counting sin dead

  96. in our new life

  97. in Christ.

  98. So, point one.

  99. In Christ, our sin is dead

  100. and we have new life.

  101. In our community group in this season,

  102. we have decided to read

  103. the book of Luke,

  104. same as Vox

  105. is going to be opening up

  106. in a few weeks.

  107. Luke is,

  108. as the Vox video said,

  109. it's a historical account

  110. written by a non-Jew

  111. from eyewitness accounts.

  112. And in our community group,

  113. we wanted to see

  114. the life of Jesus

  115. if it's relevant to us

  116. as a group of,

  117. small group of non-Jews

  118. 2,000 years later.

  119. And in Luke 3,

  120. the prophet John

  121. was baptizing

  122. repentant people

  123. in the wilderness

  124. to ready them

  125. to meet their Christ,

  126. their saving King,

  127. the one who could

  128. forgive their sins.

  129. The repentant were sinners

  130. and they knew it.

  131. They were on the extremes

  132. of society

  133. like the tax collectors

  134. and the soldiers

  135. ruling over the people.

  136. But they came asking,

  137. what shall I do?

  138. What should I do

  139. about my sin?

  140. But their answer came

  141. in a person

  142. who asked to be baptized.

  143. Jesus came to be baptized

  144. alongside repentant sinners.

  145. even though he was not

  146. a sinner.

  147. And when Jesus was baptized,

  148. the proof that he was not

  149. a sinner came

  150. from heaven.

  151. A voice came from heaven

  152. and said,

  153. you are my son

  154. whom I love.

  155. With you,

  156. I am well pleased.

  157. Jesus wanted to be baptized

  158. to align himself

  159. with repentant sinners

  160. a hint

  161. to how he would

  162. forgive their sin

  163. by being baptized again

  164. but in a different way.

  165. That's what Romans 6

  166. helps us get into.

  167. I don't know

  168. if you've been baptized.

  169. You've stood in front of people

  170. and been baptized

  171. and declared your faith

  172. amongst us.

  173. A couple of Fridays ago,

  174. one of our youth

  175. was baptized at youth.

  176. It was an amazing thing

  177. to witness

  178. and be a part of.

  179. It's a symbol

  180. of going from death

  181. to life.

  182. We go down,

  183. dunked into the tank

  184. of water

  185. to show our desire

  186. to die

  187. to our old way

  188. of life

  189. but we don't stay

  190. under the water.

  191. We come out

  192. of the water

  193. set free

  194. to live a new life.

  195. And so,

  196. let's have a look

  197. of Romans 6

  198. in verse 3,

  199. Paul used

  200. the baptism practice

  201. of Christians

  202. to show us

  203. something deeper

  204. about

  205. what being

  206. a Christian

  207. is.

  208. He says,

  209. all of us

  210. who were baptized

  211. into Christ Jesus

  212. were baptized

  213. into

  214. his death.

  215. All Christians

  216. were

  217. baptized

  218. into Christ

  219. the moment

  220. we decided

  221. to follow Jesus.

  222. Now,

  223. just as an aside,

  224. that doesn't mean

  225. all Christians

  226. have to be

  227. baptized

  228. or dunked

  229. underwater

  230. or splashed

  231. on the forehead.

  232. When we come

  233. to faith,

  234. this baptism

  235. happened.

  236. Verse 4,

  237. we were

  238. therefore

  239. buried

  240. with him

  241. through

  242. baptism

  243. into

  244. death

  245. in order

  246. that

  247. just

  248. as

  249. Christ

  250. was

  251. raised

  252. from the

  253. dead

  254. through

  255. the

  256. glory

  257. of

  258. the

  259. Father,

  260. we too

  261. might

  262. have

  263. life.

  264. Jesus'

  265. death

  266. and his

  267. resurrection

  268. were a

  269. kind of

  270. baptism.

  271. Jesus

  272. was

  273. dunked

  274. under

  275. and

  276. drowned

  277. under

  278. the ocean

  279. of the

  280. sin

  281. of all

  282. mankind.

  283. And when

  284. that sin

  285. was justly

  286. punished

  287. on the

  288. cross.

  289. But on

  290. the third

  291. day,

  292. Jesus

  293. was

  294. raised

  295. out of

  296. the

  297. water

  298. to

  299. everlasting

  300. life.

  301. To

  302. pledge

  303. allegiance

  304. to

  305. Christ

  306. is to

  307. join

  308. in his

  309. baptism

  310. of

  311. death

  312. and

  313. new

  314. life.

  315. In a

  316. similar

  317. way to

  318. Jesus

  319. choosing

  320. baptism

  321. in Luke

  322. 3,

  323. but with

  324. the

  325. rolls

  326. completely

  327. backwards.

  328. Because when

  329. we go under

  330. the waters

  331. of Jesus'

  332. death and

  333. declaring our

  334. faith in

  335. him,

  336. as he

  337. took our

  338. sin and

  339. died for

  340. it,

  341. we are

  342. raised to

  343. a declaration

  344. from heaven,

  345. God is

  346. pleased

  347. with us.

  348. What a

  349. grace.

  350. Look at

  351. verse 6.

  352. verse 6.

  353. We see

  354. that just

  355. like our

  356. symbolic

  357. church

  358. baptisms,

  359. this

  360. spiritual

  361. baptism

  362. in Christ

  363. is the

  364. moment,

  365. happens at

  366. the very

  367. second,

  368. when we

  369. turn from

  370. our own

  371. way of

  372. life to

  373. follow

  374. Christ.

  375. It says,

  376. for we

  377. know that

  378. our old

  379. self was

  380. crucified

  381. with him,

  382. so that

  383. the body

  384. ruled by

  385. sin might

  386. be done

  387. away with.

  388. In a

  389. way,

  390. when you

  391. come to

  392. Christ,

  393. you are

  394. baptized,

  395. and that

  396. moment is

  397. your funeral.

  398. Baptism

  399. was your

  400. funeral,

  401. in a way.

  402. When you

  403. followed

  404. Christ,

  405. you said,

  406. I die

  407. to my

  408. old way

  409. of living.

  410. I die

  411. and I

  412. turn to

  413. God and

  414. live for

  415. him in

  416. all I

  417. do.

  418. It's a

  419. moment of

  420. death where

  421. every old

  422. allegiance is

  423. dead,

  424. killed,

  425. so that

  426. we may

  427. follow

  428. Christ.

  429. Another

  430. way of

  431. putting it

  432. might be

  433. that the

  434. eye of

  435. the

  436. Christian

  437. died with

  438. Christ and

  439. was replaced

  440. with Christ

  441. in me.

  442. When

  443. Christ

  444. died,

  445. my sin

  446. was killed.

  447. Verse 7,

  448. anyone who

  449. has died

  450. has been

  451. set free

  452. from sin.

  453. That's how

  454. sin works.

  455. When the

  456. person who

  457. committed the

  458. sins dies,

  459. the sin is

  460. paid for and

  461. dealt with.

  462. It's gone.

  463. So if our

  464. sin goes to

  465. Christ and

  466. his death

  467. has already

  468. died,

  469. then our

  470. sin is

  471. completely

  472. gone.

  473. When Jesus

  474. died,

  475. the sinner's

  476. death,

  477. their sin

  478. died with

  479. him.

  480. sin is no

  481. longer our

  482. master.

  483. In our

  484. new life in

  485. Christ,

  486. verse 6,

  487. we should no

  488. longer be

  489. slaves to

  490. sin.

  491. sin.

  492. When sin

  493. once reigned

  494. over us,

  495. our

  496. enslavement

  497. from sin

  498. is over

  499. and we

  500. are freed

  501. spiritually,

  502. completely,

  503. once and

  504. for all

  505. in Christ.

  506. Sin is

  507. no longer

  508. our

  509. master,

  510. for we

  511. have a

  512. new

  513. allegiance.

  514. We are

  515. in sin

  516. no more,

  517. but we

  518. are in

  519. Christ.

  520. That's

  521. why Paul's

  522. shouting at

  523. the beginning,

  524. like in

  525. verse 2,

  526. is so

  527. strongly

  528. worded,

  529. we are

  530. those who

  531. have died

  532. to sin,

  533. how can

  534. we live

  535. in it

  536. any longer?

  537. Well,

  538. one answer

  539. might be

  540. that like

  541. a reflex,

  542. sometimes we

  543. continue to

  544. hear and

  545. respond to

  546. the voice

  547. of our

  548. old

  549. master.

  550. Now,

  551. when I was

  552. a child,

  553. the first

  554. movie,

  555. I think

  556. the first

  557. movie I

  558. ever went

  559. to see

  560. at the

  561. movies,

  562. in the

  563. small town

  564. where I

  565. grew up,

  566. in the

  567. one

  568. room

  569. theater

  570. in my

  571. small town,

  572. was the

  573. movie

  574. Aladdin.

  575. I don't

  576. know if

  577. you've

  578. ever seen

  579. it,

  580. it's a

  581. very old

  582. Disney

  583. film,

  584. it's

  585. one of

  586. the

  587. best

  588. films

  589. ever,

  590. in my

  591. opinion,

  592. I

  593. love

  594. it.

  595. And in

  596. that

  597. movie,

  598. there is

  599. a

  600. genie.

  601. He lives

  602. in a

  603. lamp,

  604. and Aladdin

  605. finds the

  606. lamp,

  607. tries to

  608. clean it

  609. up,

  610. and the

  611. genie

  612. comes out.

  613. The

  614. genie must

  615. grant three

  616. wishes to

  617. anyone who

  618. finds his

  619. lamp.

  620. The genie

  621. is a

  622. prisoner

  623. to the

  624. lamp,

  625. and a

  626. prisoner

  627. to the

  628. will of

  629. his

  630. master.

  631. Genie

  632. says,

  633. phenomenal

  634. cosmic

  635. powers,

  636. itty

  637. be

  638. living

  639. space.

  640. He wears

  641. these gold

  642. shackles on

  643. his wrists

  644. to show us

  645. that he's

  646. a slave.

  647. He may

  648. only grant

  649. wishes and

  650. then disappear,

  651. unless,

  652. unless his

  653. master uses

  654. one of those

  655. three wishes

  656. to set him

  657. free.

  658. Of course,

  659. no one ever

  660. had.

  661. It would have

  662. been thousands

  663. of years,

  664. according to

  665. genie,

  666. that he'd

  667. been in

  668. slavery.

  669. And why

  670. would anyone

  671. do that?

  672. Why would

  673. anyone give

  674. up one of

  675. three wishes?

  676. Have you ever

  677. played the game,

  678. if you had

  679. three wishes,

  680. what would

  681. you do?

  682. And you

  683. can't wish

  684. for more

  685. wishes.

  686. It's really

  687. hard to

  688. only think

  689. of three

  690. things,

  691. isn't it?

  692. I wish I

  693. had five,

  694. I wish I

  695. had ten,

  696. I wish I

  697. had twenty

  698. wishes.

  699. You're not

  700. going to

  701. burn one

  702. on setting

  703. the genie

  704. free.

  705. But,

  706. spoiler alert,

  707. Aladdin

  708. does.

  709. Genie,

  710. I wish

  711. for your

  712. freedom.

  713. Immediately,

  714. Genie is

  715. kind of

  716. overpowered

  717. and his

  718. shackles

  719. fall off,

  720. powerless,

  721. on the

  722. floor.

  723. And as

  724. if to

  725. test his

  726. new freedom,

  727. looking down

  728. at his

  729. wrists,

  730. and then

  731. at Aladdin,

  732. he grabs

  733. Aladdin and

  734. says,

  735. wish for

  736. anything,

  737. say,

  738. I wish

  739. for the

  740. Nile,

  741. wish for

  742. the

  743. Nile.

  744. And

  745. Aladdin

  746. says,

  747. I wish

  748. for the

  749. Nile?

  750. No way!

  751. Ha ha ha!

  752. And he

  753. laughs in

  754. his face.

  755. Because he's

  756. free.

  757. He's

  758. truly free.

  759. But imagine

  760. if that movie

  761. ended with

  762. Genie getting

  763. back in the

  764. lamp.

  765. Why would

  766. the Genie

  767. get back

  768. in the

  769. lamp?

  770. Genie was

  771. no longer

  772. enslaved

  773. by his

  774. old

  775. master.

  776. That is

  777. how dead

  778. our sin

  779. is against

  780. God.

  781. The

  782. shackles

  783. are gone

  784. and we

  785. are dead

  786. to sin.

  787. Sin is

  788. no longer

  789. our master

  790. once our

  791. allegiance

  792. is in

  793. Christ.

  794. But so

  795. often Christians

  796. live like

  797. their

  798. shackles

  799. are still

  800. on.

  801. So what

  802. does this

  803. new life

  804. in Christ

  805. look like

  806. without

  807. shackles

  808. on?

  809. There is

  810. a new

  811. life to

  812. be lived.

  813. Look at

  814. chapter

  815. verse 8.

  816. Now if

  817. we died

  818. with Christ

  819. we believe

  820. that we

  821. will also

  822. live

  823. with him.

  824. Paul's

  825. logic is

  826. this.

  827. Jesus

  828. was bodily

  829. raised from

  830. the dead

  831. and cannot

  832. die again.

  833. Unlike

  834. Lazarus who

  835. Jesus did

  836. raise from

  837. the dead

  838. but who

  839. did die

  840. again.

  841. This proves

  842. that the

  843. consequences

  844. of our

  845. sin,

  846. our death,

  847. has been

  848. died along

  849. with all

  850. our sin.

  851. Even the

  852. sin from

  853. after we

  854. believed in

  855. Christ for

  856. all of the

  857. rest of

  858. our life.

  859. Christ

  860. already

  861. died it

  862. dead on

  863. the cross.

  864. Verse 10,

  865. the death

  866. he died,

  867. he died to

  868. sin once

  869. for all.

  870. But unlike

  871. the death

  872. of our

  873. sin,

  874. the life

  875. we are

  876. to live

  877. in Christ

  878. is in

  879. the present

  880. and ongoing.

  881. Our sin

  882. has been

  883. dealt

  884. with,

  885. that our

  886. life and

  887. being alive

  888. in Christ

  889. is now

  890. and into

  891. the future

  892. and then

  893. beyond the

  894. grave.

  895. For

  896. Jesus,

  897. the life

  898. he lives,

  899. he lives

  900. to God,

  901. lives,

  902. lives,

  903. happening

  904. now.

  905. As we

  906. are unified

  907. with Christ,

  908. his baptism

  909. of death

  910. and

  911. resurrection,

  912. we are

  913. made

  914. dead

  915. to sin

  916. and we

  917. are

  918. raised

  919. from the

  920. dead,

  921. verse 4,

  922. raised from

  923. the dead

  924. through the

  925. glory of

  926. the Father,

  927. we too

  928. may live

  929. a new

  930. life.

  931. The

  932. resurrected

  933. life of a

  934. Christian

  935. has

  936. already

  937. started.

  938. While we

  939. will die

  940. one day,

  941. our

  942. relationship

  943. with God

  944. will not.

  945. In

  946. Christ,

  947. our

  948. life

  949. is

  950. Christ's.

  951. To

  952. another

  953. church,

  954. Paul said

  955. that we

  956. should think

  957. of Jesus

  958. as

  959. Christ,

  960. who is

  961. your

  962. life.

  963. It's

  964. hard for

  965. someone

  966. claiming to

  967. be a

  968. Christian

  969. to hold

  970. on to

  971. the

  972. ownership

  973. of the

  974. choices

  975. of their

  976. life,

  977. choosing to

  978. live in

  979. line with

  980. their

  981. feelings,

  982. or their

  983. desires,

  984. or their

  985. sins,

  986. or their

  987. plans,

  988. any longer

  989. because

  990. their life

  991. is no

  992. longer

  993. theirs

  994. to live

  995. but

  996. Christ's.

  997. My second

  998. point is

  999. counting sin

  1000. dead in

  1001. our new

  1002. life with

  1003. Christ.

  1004. This is

  1005. what we do

  1006. about it.

  1007. Spiritually,

  1008. we are no

  1009. longer slaves

  1010. to sin,

  1011. and yet,

  1012. the living

  1013. experience of

  1014. a Christian,

  1015. every single

  1016. Christian,

  1017. is a

  1018. continued

  1019. struggle

  1020. with sin.

  1021. Sin has

  1022. no

  1023. spiritual

  1024. hold on

  1025. us.

  1026. So while

  1027. it remains

  1028. in our

  1029. life,

  1030. how might

  1031. we take

  1032. hold of

  1033. it?

  1034. In the

  1035. same way,

  1036. Paul says,

  1037. count yourselves

  1038. dead to

  1039. sin,

  1040. but alive

  1041. to God

  1042. in Christ

  1043. Jesus.

  1044. That's a

  1045. verse in

  1046. your Bible

  1047. worth

  1048. highlighting.

  1049. Verse 11.

  1050. Count

  1051. yourselves as

  1052. dead to

  1053. sin,

  1054. but alive

  1055. to God

  1056. in Christ

  1057. Jesus.

  1058. Paul suggests

  1059. that we

  1060. choose to

  1061. witness the

  1062. death and

  1063. resurrection of

  1064. Christ like

  1065. the ticking

  1066. seconds hand

  1067. on a

  1068. watch or

  1069. a clock,

  1070. counting

  1071. the proof

  1072. that sin

  1073. is dead.

  1074. Paul doesn't

  1075. expect you

  1076. to live

  1077. without

  1078. sinning

  1079. anymore

  1080. or command

  1081. you to

  1082. be dead

  1083. to sin.

  1084. Instead,

  1085. he says,

  1086. count your

  1087. sin dead.

  1088. And there

  1089. are two

  1090. ways that

  1091. Paul

  1092. encourages us

  1093. to do

  1094. this counting.

  1095. He says,

  1096. let sin

  1097. reign in

  1098. you no

  1099. more,

  1100. in any

  1101. part of

  1102. you.

  1103. We're to

  1104. be

  1105. Christians

  1106. who resist

  1107. the power

  1108. of sin

  1109. over us,

  1110. yet without

  1111. despair.

  1112. Do not

  1113. let sin

  1114. reign in

  1115. your mortal

  1116. body so

  1117. that you

  1118. obey its

  1119. evil desires.

  1120. Do not

  1121. offer any

  1122. part of

  1123. yourself to

  1124. sin as

  1125. an instrument

  1126. of wickedness.

  1127. We're to

  1128. pay internal

  1129. and external

  1130. attention

  1131. to the

  1132. avoidance,

  1133. rejection,

  1134. fleeing from,

  1135. repenting of,

  1136. and talking

  1137. openly with

  1138. other Christians

  1139. about our

  1140. ongoing,

  1141. yet dead,

  1142. sin.

  1143. Internally,

  1144. we must

  1145. battle our

  1146. desires towards

  1147. sin,

  1148. as if our

  1149. old master

  1150. sin is

  1151. still directing

  1152. our reflexes,

  1153. our longings.

  1154. We can

  1155. still hear

  1156. and feel

  1157. sin's

  1158. voice.

  1159. Almost like

  1160. we are

  1161. addicts

  1162. who hate

  1163. and flee

  1164. from their

  1165. old behaviour,

  1166. yet cannot

  1167. stop leaning

  1168. back on it,

  1169. yearning

  1170. for another

  1171. hit.

  1172. It is

  1173. good that

  1174. there is

  1175. infinite

  1176. grace for

  1177. those who

  1178. sin.

  1179. But

  1180. externally,

  1181. we must

  1182. not let

  1183. our bodies

  1184. be wicked

  1185. instruments

  1186. of sin.

  1187. Look at

  1188. your hands,

  1189. hold them

  1190. in front of

  1191. your face.

  1192. Do it.

  1193. There's still

  1194. some crossed

  1195. arms, pull

  1196. your hands

  1197. out.

  1198. I want

  1199. you to do

  1200. this.

  1201. Yeah.

  1202. These hands

  1203. can hold

  1204. another's,

  1205. in comfort.

  1206. But they

  1207. can also

  1208. strike

  1209. in violence.

  1210. Now move

  1211. your tongue

  1212. around in

  1213. your mouth.

  1214. Mm-hmm.

  1215. Your tongue

  1216. creates your

  1217. words.

  1218. They can

  1219. heal.

  1220. They can

  1221. bring joy.

  1222. They can

  1223. even carry

  1224. the words

  1225. of God.

  1226. But they

  1227. can also

  1228. lie and

  1229. lead away

  1230. from Christ.

  1231. Do even

  1232. more damage.

  1233. It does

  1234. not follow

  1235. logic and

  1236. is not

  1237. good that

  1238. our lives

  1239. in Christ

  1240. be called

  1241. new without

  1242. a constant

  1243. set-free

  1244. battle

  1245. against sin

  1246. being openly

  1247. waged alongside

  1248. others in

  1249. community,

  1250. alongside

  1251. others who

  1252. are living

  1253. that new

  1254. life alongside

  1255. you.

  1256. It's not

  1257. in my

  1258. script.

  1259. But that

  1260. young kid

  1261. who thought

  1262. himself a

  1263. Christian

  1264. imposter,

  1265. when I got

  1266. to uni,

  1267. I found

  1268. two others.

  1269. We

  1270. together

  1271. felt like

  1272. imposters and

  1273. we went to

  1274. the Bible

  1275. together and

  1276. saw that our

  1277. sin was dead.

  1278. But without

  1279. their help,

  1280. I would not

  1281. have seen

  1282. it.

  1283. Their actions

  1284. and their

  1285. words led

  1286. me to the

  1287. grace of God

  1288. in Christ.

  1289. So the

  1290. alternative then

  1291. is to,

  1292. verse 13,

  1293. rather offer

  1294. yourselves to

  1295. God and to

  1296. those who have

  1297. been brought

  1298. from death to

  1299. life and

  1300. offer every

  1301. part of

  1302. yourself to

  1303. him as an

  1304. instrument of

  1305. righteousness.

  1306. We want

  1307. Christ to

  1308. reign in

  1309. every part of

  1310. us, inside

  1311. and out.

  1312. To offer

  1313. ourselves to

  1314. God is not

  1315. just to give

  1316. him

  1317. only our

  1318. attention

  1319. sometimes,

  1320. or when it

  1321. suits you,

  1322. or when you

  1323. feel like it,

  1324. when you've

  1325. finally answered

  1326. all your

  1327. emails and

  1328. your task

  1329. list is

  1330. completed,

  1331. when you've

  1332. answered all

  1333. your text

  1334. messages and

  1335. you've got

  1336. every response

  1337. in return.

  1338. No.

  1339. To offer

  1340. yourselves is

  1341. worship language.

  1342. It's whole

  1343. body and

  1344. life sacrifice.

  1345. It's full

  1346. allegiance as

  1347. if Christ

  1348. was living

  1349. your life

  1350. now.

  1351. Galatians,

  1352. another church

  1353. that Paul

  1354. wrote to,

  1355. he wrote

  1356. this in

  1357. verse 20

  1358. chapter 2,

  1359. I, Paul,

  1360. a Christian,

  1361. I have

  1362. been crucified

  1363. with Christ

  1364. and I no

  1365. longer live,

  1366. but Christ

  1367. lives in me.

  1368. The life I

  1369. live in the

  1370. body, I

  1371. live by faith

  1372. in the Son

  1373. of God.

  1374. So if

  1375. someone asked

  1376. you, what

  1377. is being a

  1378. Christian about?

  1379. What does it

  1380. mean to be a

  1381. Christian?

  1382. Would you

  1383. say, I

  1384. no longer

  1385. live, but

  1386. Christ lives

  1387. in me?

  1388. Our

  1389. offering of

  1390. ourselves to

  1391. Christ is to

  1392. be complete,

  1393. or we are

  1394. not living in

  1395. Christ.

  1396. If we are

  1397. to be

  1398. instruments,

  1399. of

  1400. righteousness.

  1401. For

  1402. instruments

  1403. make noise,

  1404. don't they?

  1405. Like my

  1406. guitar this

  1407. morning.

  1408. Instruments

  1409. make noise

  1410. for all to

  1411. hear.

  1412. We are to

  1413. be instruments

  1414. of righteousness.

  1415. We must

  1416. count ourselves

  1417. as dead to

  1418. sin and

  1419. alive to

  1420. God,

  1421. alive to

  1422. Him,

  1423. and alive

  1424. to

  1425. righteousness.

  1426. Now that

  1427. train of

  1428. thought,

  1429. Paul continues

  1430. in the rest

  1431. of chapter 6,

  1432. and we don't

  1433. have time to

  1434. go through

  1435. that this

  1436. morning.

  1437. I

  1438. encourage you

  1439. to read

  1440. it.

  1441. In light

  1442. of hearing

  1443. about verses

  1444. 1 to 14.

  1445. But next

  1446. week we're

  1447. going to

  1448. hear about

  1449. how allegiance

  1450. to Christ,

  1451. how being

  1452. in Christ

  1453. inspires a

  1454. grace-born

  1455. desire for

  1456. holiness.

  1457. Count

  1458. yourself as

  1459. dead to

  1460. sin and

  1461. alive to

  1462. God in

  1463. Christ Jesus.

  1464. Christians

  1465. receive God's

  1466. grace through

  1467. faith.

  1468. God's grace

  1469. through faith

  1470. in a

  1471. relationship

  1472. with Christ.

  1473. And it's a

  1474. relationship that

  1475. is dynamic

  1476. and it's

  1477. living.

  1478. And it's

  1479. formed once

  1480. for all by

  1481. the saving

  1482. worth of

  1483. Jesus on

  1484. the cross,

  1485. proven at

  1486. His

  1487. resurrection.

  1488. salvation.

  1489. And it

  1490. includes the

  1491. gift of

  1492. Christ's

  1493. righteous

  1494. life when

  1495. we are

  1496. justified in

  1497. Him.

  1498. But now we

  1499. must add

  1500. to that

  1501. what a

  1502. Christian is

  1503. and does

  1504. counts

  1505. themselves

  1506. dead to

  1507. sin but

  1508. alive to

  1509. God in

  1510. Christ Jesus.

  1511. So if you

  1512. feel like

  1513. a Christian

  1514. living with

  1515. imposter

  1516. syndrome

  1517. or you've

  1518. stopped

  1519. caring about

  1520. the sin in

  1521. your life as

  1522. you follow

  1523. Jesus,

  1524. let me say

  1525. that whoever

  1526. you once

  1527. were,

  1528. you no

  1529. longer are

  1530. if you

  1531. follow Jesus.

  1532. Whatever sin

  1533. characterized

  1534. your life

  1535. in your

  1536. past,

  1537. no longer

  1538. characterizes

  1539. your life

  1540. and your

  1541. present.

  1542. In Christ,

  1543. sin is

  1544. dead.

  1545. A Christian

  1546. who sins

  1547. experiences

  1548. their

  1549. dependence

  1550. on Christ

  1551. in a way

  1552. that keeps

  1553. them coming

  1554. back to

  1555. Him.

  1556. Look for

  1557. your sin.

  1558. Repent

  1559. of your

  1560. sin.

  1561. talk to

  1562. others about

  1563. your struggles

  1564. because in

  1565. Christ,

  1566. sin is

  1567. the imposter,

  1568. not you.

  1569. The presence

  1570. of sin

  1571. does not

  1572. dismantle

  1573. your salvation

  1574. but Christ's

  1575. salvation

  1576. dismantles

  1577. its effect

  1578. on you.

  1579. So count.

  1580. count.

  1581. In verse

  1582. 11,

  1583. the word

  1584. count,

  1585. in different

  1586. English

  1587. translations

  1588. it's

  1589. translated

  1590. as

  1591. reckon,

  1592. consider,

  1593. regard,

  1594. look at,

  1595. count.

  1596. They're all

  1597. an action

  1598. that we

  1599. are to

  1600. do in

  1601. rhythm.

  1602. They're for

  1603. you to do

  1604. repeatedly.

  1605. Count,

  1606. reckon,

  1607. consider what

  1608. being a

  1609. Christian really

  1610. is.

  1611. Start by

  1612. exploring

  1613. Scripture

  1614. in

  1615. rhythm

  1616. as

  1617. often

  1618. and as

  1619. regularly

  1620. as you

  1621. can

  1622. because no

  1623. single

  1624. Christian

  1625. ought to

  1626. stop

  1627. counting

  1628. the

  1629. graces

  1630. of

  1631. Christ

  1632. towards

  1633. us.

  1634. The Bible

  1635. is thick

  1636. with

  1637. unending

  1638. joys for

  1639. the

  1640. Christian,

  1641. fuel for

  1642. our

  1643. righteousness

  1644. and grace

  1645. for our

  1646. struggles

  1647. with sin

  1648. on every

  1649. page.

  1650. You will

  1651. never get

  1652. away

  1653. from your

  1654. daily

  1655. need

  1656. for

  1657. counting

  1658. your

  1659. faith

  1660. in

  1661. Christ.

  1662. Paul wrote

  1663. Romans 6

  1664. because he

  1665. knew or

  1666. was witnessing

  1667. or even

  1668. experienced

  1669. himself how

  1670. prone we

  1671. are to

  1672. forget

  1673. to count

  1674. our

  1675. blessings

  1676. in

  1677. Christ.

  1678. That's

  1679. why this

  1680. service is

  1681. on

  1682. weekly.

  1683. we're

  1684. counting

  1685. together

  1686. in

  1687. corporate

  1688. worship

  1689. who

  1690. we've

  1691. been made

  1692. to be

  1693. in

  1694. Christ.

  1695. And if

  1696. you're

  1697. struggling

  1698. to open

  1699. the Bible

  1700. on your

  1701. own

  1702. and do

  1703. that,

  1704. take

  1705. the example

  1706. of me

  1707. as a

  1708. young kid,

  1709. open the

  1710. Bible with

  1711. other

  1712. people.

  1713. Weekly

  1714. we have

  1715. community

  1716. groups on

  1717. where we

  1718. open the

  1719. Bible and

  1720. we see

  1721. how it

  1722. is shone

  1723. onto our

  1724. lives so

  1725. that we

  1726. can see

  1727. the sin

  1728. in our

  1729. life and

  1730. wrestle with

  1731. it, even

  1732. as we are

  1733. in Christ

  1734. and it

  1735. is dead.

  1736. Join a

  1737. community

  1738. group.

  1739. If you're

  1740. here today

  1741. or you're

  1742. watching online

  1743. and you

  1744. are not

  1745. in a

  1746. regular

  1747. pattern of

  1748. coming to

  1749. be a

  1750. part of

  1751. a service,

  1752. stick it in

  1753. your diary,

  1754. make it a

  1755. priority above

  1756. everything else

  1757. in your

  1758. week,

  1759. over your

  1760. work,

  1761. over your

  1762. rest,

  1763. over everything

  1764. and gather

  1765. with God's

  1766. people and

  1767. count the

  1768. grace of

  1769. God every

  1770. week together.

  1771. But if

  1772. you're not

  1773. yet a

  1774. Christian,

  1775. consider

  1776. reading the

  1777. Bible with

  1778. someone else.

  1779. There are

  1780. people in

  1781. this room

  1782. who long

  1783. and are

  1784. excited to

  1785. read the

  1786. Bible with

  1787. you.

  1788. so come

  1789. speak to

  1790. me and

  1791. I will

  1792. connect you

  1793. to them

  1794. or I

  1795. will read

  1796. the Bible

  1797. with you.

  1798. There's a

  1799. time and a

  1800. place that

  1801. suits.

  1802. Can you put

  1803. up verse 11

  1804. on the screen,

  1805. Dean?

  1806. What we're

  1807. going to do

  1808. is we're

  1809. going to sing

  1810. a response

  1811. to God.

  1812. It's a

  1813. prayer,

  1814. very much

  1815. in line

  1816. and in

  1817. a helpful

  1818. way,

  1819. reflecting on

  1820. Romans chapter

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  1821. 6 and

  1822. everything that

  1823. I've just

  1824. shared.

  1825. Before we

  1826. do,

  1827. take one

  1828. minute to

  1829. reflect on

  1830. this verse

  1831. and be

  1832. thankful for

  1833. all you have

  1834. in Christ.

  1835. For you are

  1836. dead to sin

  1837. and alive to

  1838. God in

  1839. Christ Jesus.
