  1. it's my joy to be with you all again to bring God's word to you we're going to be starting a

  2. new sermon series in the book of Ruth and that's all I'm going to say at this moment before I

  3. introduce the book I want to start with a question this question is specifically for the kids among

  4. us now this is a silent question so I'm just asking you to think you don't have to say anything

  5. out loud but my question is this why do your parents read out loud to you

  6. why do your parents read out loud to you why do they take time sometimes to share stories with

  7. you some that are old from their own childhood and some perhaps that are new that they didn't know

  8. when they were your age there's a lot of different answers we could think of perhaps some of it's just

  9. the joy of being together and sharing a quiet time outside of all the rush of life perhaps some of it's

  10. the excitement that we get from the idea of a journey and a challenge but I hope among all of

  11. that there's another reason as well and it's true both for children and adults who read stories and

  12. it's this that when we read a story we get to experience things that we ourselves have never done

  13. and especially when we're young it's an opportunity for us to learn about places and people and things

  14. that otherwise we wouldn't know about and most importantly it's a chance for us to become wise

  15. that as your parents read stories to you they're hoping that as you hear about the mistakes of a

  16. character you are learning without having to suffer the consequences yourselves and that as you read about

  17. their successes you are able to see the result of things like hard work and perseverance and so it's out of

  18. your parents love for you that they want you to become wise wiser than your years that they read stories to you

  19. now we as adults often read stories for the same reason it's important for us to know things about

  20. people and cultures that we would not otherwise encounter but as we grow we sometimes read stories

  21. not to know about people who've experienced things differently than us but to read about people who've

  22. experienced the same thing so that we know as we go through something in life that we're not alone

  23. we're not the only person who has seen or done or heard the things that we've gone through in our

  24. lives as we come to the book of ruth someone asked me recently why is it that we're studying the book of

  25. ruth and it's for those same reasons the book of ruth is going to touch on suffering and so there's some of us

  26. in this room who have not experienced a lot of suffering in our lives and there's some of us who have

  27. it's a book about widows it's going to be a book about two widows in particular and there are many

  28. among us here today who are widows

  29. it's a book about people who have to live in a place that they weren't born

  30. and there's many here this morning who live in a place where they were not born

  31. and it's a book about suffering and there's many of us who have not experienced the things

  32. that we encounter in this book but it's a book for everyone who lives in a world that is broken

  33. and bleeding from the results of sin and so that is all of us here and so god

  34. like a good and gracious father or mother wants those of us who have walked through suffering

  35. to know that we're not the only ones

  36. and he wants those of us who have not walked through the kind of suffering that we'll see

  37. in this book to learn and become wise

  38. if you've not suffered the things that we're going to talk about this morning and in the book of ruth

  39. there are two things we need to keep in mind

  40. one if we're not suffering now we're surrounded by people who are

  41. that all you need to do is look around the room and you can see people and faces here among us

  42. who have walked through incredibly difficult things and are walking through some of them right now

  43. and the other thing to keep in mind is that if you're not suffering right now

  44. if the lord gives you the grace to live long enough one day you will

  45. and so god like a loving father wants to prepare us

  46. he wants us to know and understand and be prepared for the things that come along in our lives

  47. and so like a loving father or a loving mother he wants to tell us a story

  48. and so we're going to see that as we come to the book of ruth

  49. i'm going to say two other things as we we start

  50. first of all as we're talking about suffering it's something that's incredibly complicated

  51. complex and it's incredibly messy

  52. and so i am not going to say everything about suffering this morning

  53. if we were to say everything that could be said we would be here into the afternoon

  54. we would skip the announcement from the pulpit search committee and we would be here into the evening

  55. and then we would have to come back again on monday morning to continue

  56. and so i'm not going to say everything but we will just begin and say something

  57. not everything but something

  58. second i know that as we talk about some of these things those of us who have walked through them

  59. it will bring up memories for us

  60. and so i want to remind you as i have before that most importantly as that happens

  61. the lord is for you and he is with you

  62. and of much less importance i am for you and with you as well

  63. and so with that we're going to turn to the book of ruth

  64. we're starting in ruth chapter 1 at verse 1

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  65. remember that this is god's word

  66. and god tells us that his word is more precious than gold

  67. even the finest gold

  68. and it is sweeter than honey

  69. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb

  70. and so we're going to read it now starting in verse 1

  71. in the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land

  72. and a man of bethlehem in judah went to sojourn in the country of moab

  73. he and his wife and his two sons

  74. the name of the man was a limeleck and the name of his wife naomi

  75. and the names of his two sons were malin and chilian

  76. they were aetherophytes from bethlehem in judah

  77. they went into the country of moab and remained there

  78. verse 3

  79. but a limeleck the husband of naomi died

  80. and she was left with her two sons

  81. these took moabite wives

  82. the name of the one was orpah

  83. and the name of the other ruth

  84. they lived there about 10 years

  85. and both malin and chilian died

  86. so that the woman was left

  87. without her two sons

  88. and her husband

  89. verse 6

  90. then she arose with her daughters-in-law

  91. to return from the country of moab

  92. for she had heard in the fields of moab

  93. that the lord had visited his people

  94. and given them food

  95. please pray with me as we come to this portion of god's word

  96. dear father in heaven

  97. we thank you that you are a loving father

  98. that you want to teach us and instruct us

  99. you want us to become wise

  100. you want to comfort us and encourage us

  101. and you need to challenge us

  102. so we ask that you would do all of those things for us this morning

  103. that you would send your holy spirit among us

  104. so that our eyes would be opened

  105. our ears unstopped

  106. our minds clear

  107. and our hearts would be softened

  108. so that we would see and hear and believe

  109. everything that is written about you

  110. in your word

  111. amen

  112. when i had first

  113. graduated from college

  114. had a few months off

  115. because i of course had the summer break

  116. but i quickly got a job teaching at a small school

  117. in eastern virginia

  118. and one of the first people i met as i began teaching there was a woman whose name was alice chidzero

  119. alice had had a very long history in her life

  120. she was originally from zimbabwe

  121. she had grown up in the british colony of rudicia

  122. during the time when the freedom fighters were fighting for them to be free

  123. and fully become part of zimbabwe

  124. and i didn't know her whole story

  125. but i knew enough to know that she was a woman who had suffered tremendously

  126. and as i started at the school

  127. she was the one who told me on my first day

  128. or second day of helping with the car line

  129. that i was 22 fresh out of college

  130. in her words a kidult

  131. which i wore with honor and as a badge of honor in some ways

  132. as i began to know a little bit more about alice and her story

  133. and she would share sometimes in our chapel services at school

  134. and she would tell dramatic stories about the way that god had provided for her

  135. and his faithfulness to her

  136. and this past january

  137. many of alice's students she had taught at the school for a while

  138. encouraged her over and over again

  139. that she had to write a book to tell her story

  140. and so she didn't consider herself a writer

  141. but after a lot of trepidation and work and struggle she finally did

  142. and so i was able to get a hold of a copy of her book called when the brook runs dry

  143. my journey from africa to america and back a few times

  144. just came out this january and i've been reading it as i prepared for this sermon series

  145. and alice goes through many of the things that we learn just in these first five verses about ruth and naomi

  146. and yet she spends a whole book going through them

  147. her experiences and the things that she felt as she walked through times of tremendous difficulty

  148. and so i'm just going to read you a few quotes as we begin

  149. first of all alice suffers the death of her father and her young daughter

  150. her young daughter has a blood infusion that goes terribly wrong

  151. and so as she thinks through both of those she says this

  152. the nightmare just seemed to be growing bleaker

  153. everything around me felt black

  154. there were no grays

  155. later on alice is going to travel all the way from zimbabwe to the united states

  156. which is where i met her

  157. long before i met her though while she was in the united states

  158. her husband developed a tumor in his brain and he was given only six months to live

  159. after he passed she was unable with her family to afford to ship his body back to zimbabwe

  160. and so after his cremation friends of hers in the united states gathered around to buy a suitcase for her

  161. so that the ashes of her husband could be taken back to his home country

  162. and so in one of the most tragic scenes in the book her her son is walking with her through the airport carrying this suitcase

  163. she says this

  164. it was heartbreaking to think that my son would soon carry his father's remains from the usa to africa

  165. we would fly out of boston on january 11th

  166. now that we were about ready to board the plane i was nervous about going home

  167. i dreaded facing my family and my late husband's family all alone

  168. i felt stripped of my covering

  169. since leaving zimbabwe in 1996 felix that's her husband

  170. had been unable to return home

  171. now we were bringing him home in the form of ashes

  172. of course i knew it was not my fault

  173. but i still felt responsible for not bringing my husband home alive

  174. i think i know

  175. how naomi felt

  176. once again it felt as though i were dreaming

  177. and i would wake up

  178. at some point

  179. the brook had grown dry

  180. and i couldn't fathom how i'd get through the next day

  181. not to mention

  182. the rest of my life

  183. after a while my response seemed mechanical

  184. aside from the times i broke down and wept

  185. two days later jet lagged and weary

  186. and simply filled with grief

  187. we held felix's funeral and his ashes

  188. were buried

  189. if only i could lie down and sleep

  190. and wake up to find that i had dreamt everything

  191. that had happened over the last few months

  192. as a mother of a two-year-old however

  193. i had no choice

  194. but to pull myself

  195. together

  196. i won't ruin the rest of the story for you

  197. but i bring that to us not

  198. out of a sense of just wanting to find the most tragic situation

  199. but to highlight what's happening here in very fast time

  200. in verses one through six

  201. much like alice

  202. ruth and naomi are experiencing the same thing

  203. especially for naomi

  204. she's in a country that's not her own

  205. a country where she's not been born

  206. and in quick succession

  207. she too experiences tremendous loss

  208. and she comes

  209. like alice as well

  210. from a country that knows

  211. its own history of turmoil

  212. we're told in verse one

  213. that this is in the days when the judges ruled

  214. if you remember from the story of the bible

  215. you know that the time of the judges

  216. was after the exodus from egypt

  217. it was after god's dramatic deliverance of his people

  218. after their time in the wilderness

  219. but it was before the reign of the kings

  220. it was before david and solomon and saul

  221. were in israel

  222. and it was a time that was tumultuous

  223. israel was often under the rule of other nations

  224. it was a time of rebellion

  225. where they were constantly going from god

  226. and returning to him

  227. and as you read the book of judges

  228. you notice that

  229. the world around them continues to unravel

  230. as things become more and more chaotic

  231. to the point that there's this question

  232. near the end of the book

  233. this statement that in israel there was no king

  234. which raises a question of

  235. where is the king

  236. and on top of that we see in verse one

  237. there was a famine

  238. and so there's chaos in the home country

  239. and a famine

  240. forcing them to go to a new land

  241. they go from judah to sojourn in the country of moab

  242. now remember the moabites were the people that were descended from lot

  243. lot in genesis was

  244. i believe the nephew of abraham

  245. and he had chosen to

  246. go to the land that was rich and plentiful

  247. rather than the land that god had promised

  248. and so this was now a land where people worship

  249. not yahweh not the one true god

  250. but they worshiped false gods

  251. like baal and chemosh

  252. and so here we have god's people

  253. in god's land

  254. having to leave for a foreign country

  255. for the sake of food

  256. by the way

  257. do you know what the city bethlehem

  258. bethlehem do you know what that word means

  259. means house of bread

  260. and so in the house of bread

  261. there is no bread

  262. and so god's people

  263. are leaving

  264. we find out the name of the husband in verse two

  265. the name is elimelech

  266. and the name of his wife naomi

  267. and then they have these two sons

  268. and they go and they dwell

  269. in moab

  270. by the way the sons names roughly in hebrew

  271. translate to weakling one

  272. and weakling two

  273. and then in verse three

  274. much like we heard from the testimony of alas chidzero

  275. but elimelech the husband of naomi died

  276. and she was left with her two sons

  277. these two took moabite wives

  278. the name of the one was orpah

  279. and the name of the other ruth

  280. they lived there about ten years

  281. and both malin and chilian died

  282. so that the woman was

  283. left

  284. without her two sons

  285. and her husband

  286. and the author is intentional here

  287. in verses three and five

  288. of using that word twice

  289. the word of left

  290. by the way

  291. just as a teaser

  292. for the rest of our series

  293. we won't talk about this anymore today

  294. but there are many words

  295. in the book of ruth

  296. that only appear twice

  297. and the first occurrence

  298. and the second occurrence

  299. will have great significance

  300. that's all i'm going to say

  301. okay

  302. and so we see this great tragedy

  303. the emotions that alas shares

  304. in her story

  305. we can imagine what's going on

  306. for naomi especially

  307. she's returning to a land

  308. with no sons

  309. and no husband

  310. she's too old

  311. to have more children

  312. to provide for her

  313. most likely her parents have died

  314. unable to remarry

  315. and probably without

  316. any kind of skill

  317. to provide for herself

  318. and so she finds herself here

  319. in the midst

  320. of tremendous

  321. and intense

  322. grief

  323. but much like alas said

  324. naomi too

  325. has to keep moving

  326. and so we see in verse six

  327. then she arose

  328. with her daughters-in-law

  329. to return from the country

  330. of moab

  331. for she had heard

  332. in the fields of moab

  333. that the lord had visited

  334. his people

  335. and given them food

  336. now as i've thought about

  337. this sermon

  338. and this sermon series

  339. and talking about suffering

  340. as i mentioned before

  341. it's it's an overwhelming

  342. topic to think about

  343. and to talk about

  344. because there's so many things

  345. we can and do

  346. and could and should say

  347. and so with this passage

  348. before us

  349. to be able to say

  350. not everything

  351. but something

  352. we're going to have

  353. one question

  354. and one answer

  355. from these six verses

  356. one question

  357. and one answer

  358. i mentioned the names

  359. of some of these characters

  360. but i did not tell you

  361. the name of a limelight

  362. what it meant

  363. the l at the beginning

  364. is the same l

  365. that shows up

  366. in god's name

  367. el shaddai

  368. which means god the almighty

  369. and so the l means god

  370. the melech shows up

  371. in other biblical names

  372. that we see

  373. like a bimelech

  374. and it means king

  375. and so elimelech

  376. literally translates

  377. to god

  378. is my king

  379. god

  380. is

  381. king

  382. and so indirectly

  383. this text

  384. is asking us

  385. a question

  386. if the house

  387. of bread

  388. has no bread

  389. and god's people

  390. have a famine

  391. but the pagans

  392. don't

  393. and if god

  394. is my king

  395. is dead

  396. is god

  397. still

  398. the king

  399. if god

  400. is my king

  401. is dead

  402. is god

  403. still

  404. the king

  405. is god

  406. still

  407. at work

  408. in the dark

  409. it's a question

  410. that naomi and ruth

  411. have to ask

  412. and it's a question

  413. that we ask

  414. as well

  415. is god

  416. still the king

  417. if my spouse

  418. and i both said

  419. i do

  420. and then a decade

  421. later

  422. one of us

  423. says

  424. i don't

  425. is god

  426. still

  427. the king

  428. if the relationship

  429. that i

  430. hoped and dreamed

  431. would end in marriage

  432. ends in heartbreak

  433. instead

  434. is god

  435. still the king

  436. if a father

  437. has a daughter

  438. and he grows

  439. up with dreams

  440. of walking

  441. her down

  442. the aisle

  443. and he has

  444. to bury her

  445. instead

  446. is god

  447. still

  448. the king

  449. if it feels

  450. like my life

  451. is filled

  452. completely

  453. with scheduling

  454. and attending

  455. doctor's appointments

  456. is god

  457. still the king

  458. if someone

  459. who should have

  460. protected me

  461. and watched out

  462. for me

  463. hurt me

  464. instead

  465. is god

  466. still the king

  467. if i get up

  468. in the morning

  469. and i cry

  470. and i go to bed

  471. at night

  472. and i cry

  473. and i know

  474. all too well

  475. why

  476. or perhaps

  477. even more

  478. frighteningly

  479. i don't know

  480. why

  481. is god

  482. still the king

  483. when my mom

  484. or my dad

  485. has to go off

  486. for another

  487. deployment

  488. and is god

  489. still the king

  490. if a chaplain

  491. comes

  492. and knocks

  493. on my door

  494. and it's a question

  495. that if we're honest

  496. about the reality

  497. of living in this world

  498. that every single

  499. one of us

  500. if we have not

  501. had to answer it

  502. will have to answer it

  503. one day

  504. so that is why

  505. god has given us

  506. here

  507. his word

  508. is god

  509. at work

  510. in the dark

  511. it's a question

  512. that we ask here

  513. in this room

  514. inside the church

  515. and it's a question

  516. that people outside

  517. the church

  518. are asking as well

  519. i've met folks

  520. in this city

  521. and other cities

  522. who

  523. when it seemed

  524. that things were dark

  525. they decided

  526. that god

  527. was not the king

  528. and so they walked

  529. away from him

  530. and his church

  531. can there be

  532. hope

  533. in the dark

  534. i told you

  535. there was going

  536. to be one

  537. question

  538. and one answer

  539. that's our question

  540. but this very same

  541. text is going

  542. to provide us

  543. with our answer

  544. as well

  545. we're going to

  546. go back to verse 1

  547. in the days

  548. when the judges

  549. ruled there was

  550. a famine

  551. in the land

  552. there's only

  553. two other times

  554. that that phrase

  555. appears in the bible

  556. there was a famine

  557. in the land

  558. and both of them

  559. are in the book

  560. of genesis

  561. genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  562. and genesis chapter 26

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  563. speaking of abraham

  564. and isaac

  565. who had to leave

  566. where they were

  567. because of a famine

  568. and if you're familiar

  569. with those stories

  570. you know that god

  571. took them there

  572. and then he brought

  573. them out

  574. with even more

  575. than they originally

  576. had

  577. and so as an israelite

  578. is listening

  579. he's hearing those

  580. phrases and thinking

  581. what is god going

  582. to do

  583. with this famine

  584. we've seen his

  585. faithfulness

  586. in the past

  587. we've seen the way

  588. that god works

  589. that famines

  590. are something

  591. that he often uses

  592. to bring blessing

  593. on his people

  594. we also see

  595. an inability

  596. to have children

  597. the author doesn't

  598. state this

  599. but we're told

  600. that there was

  601. ten years

  602. that passed

  603. and so the question

  604. that is not

  605. explicitly raised

  606. is where are

  607. naomi's

  608. grandchildren

  609. why did they

  610. not appear

  611. and the original

  612. hearers would have

  613. thought again

  614. back to genesis

  615. of sarah

  616. who was unable

  617. to have children

  618. and yet god

  619. used for a great

  620. lineage

  621. and so we're

  622. seeing small

  623. notes here

  624. of god being

  625. at work

  626. in the midst

  627. of this tragedy

  628. as we hear

  629. echoes

  630. of stories

  631. that have

  632. come before

  633. but then

  634. what is implicit

  635. becomes explicit

  636. in verse 6

  637. then she arose

  638. with her daughters

  639. in law

  640. to return

  641. from the country

  642. of mohab

  643. for she had

  644. heard in the

  645. fields of moab

  646. that who

  647. the lord

  648. had visited

  649. his people

  650. and given

  651. them food

  652. she heard

  653. in the fields

  654. of moab

  655. that the lord

  656. had visited

  657. his people

  658. and given

  659. them food

  660. and so we see

  661. that even

  662. in the midst

  663. of tragedy

  664. god

  665. is still

  666. at work

  667. even in the

  668. darkest of times

  669. god is still

  670. providing for

  671. his people

  672. and protecting

  673. them

  674. he's providing

  675. for ruth

  676. and naomi

  677. as he brings

  678. food to their

  679. homeland

  680. and he's also

  681. guiding them

  682. ruth and naomi

  683. know

  684. what their

  685. next step

  686. is

  687. and so

  688. indirectly

  689. god's

  690. providence

  691. is leading

  692. them back

  693. to the

  694. land

  695. of israel

  696. so we

  697. have our

  698. question

  699. is god

  700. still

  701. the king

  702. the answer

  703. is yes

  704. even

  705. in the

  706. darkest

  707. of times

  708. god

  709. is still

  710. at work

  711. the answer

  712. is yes

  713. even

  714. in the

  715. darkest

  716. of times

  717. god

  718. is still

  719. at work

  720. he's at

  721. work

  722. leading

  723. his people

  724. he's at

  725. work

  726. providing

  727. for them

  728. and he

  729. is at

  730. work

  731. guiding

  732. them

  733. that doesn't

  734. mean that

  735. he's going

  736. to remove

  737. every obstacle

  738. it doesn't

  739. mean that

  740. everything

  741. in this

  742. life is

  743. going

  744. to be

  745. made

  746. whole

  747. but god

  748. is leading

  749. and guiding

  750. and providing

  751. even

  752. when life

  753. goes dark

  754. god is

  755. leading

  756. and guiding

  757. and providing

  758. even

  759. when life

  760. goes dark

  761. the readers

  762. of this story

  763. would not

  764. only know

  765. about god's

  766. acts in the

  767. past in the

  768. book of

  769. genesis

  770. the way

  771. that he

  772. works

  773. and the

  774. patterns

  775. that have

  776. been laid

  777. down in

  778. their stories

  779. but they

  780. would also

  781. remember

  782. that he

  783. was the

  784. god

  785. of the

  786. covenant

  787. now

  788. covenant

  789. is a

  790. big word

  791. there are

  792. many different

  793. ways to

  794. define it

  795. but the way

  796. i'm going to

  797. define it

  798. this morning

  799. is this

  800. the covenant

  801. is god's

  802. promise

  803. it's his

  804. promise that he

  805. made in places

  806. like ezekiel 37

  807. and leviticus 26

  808. and his promise

  809. is this

  810. i will be

  811. your god

  812. and you

  813. will be

  814. my people

  815. and i

  816. will dwell

  817. with you

  818. forever

  819. forever

  820. you

  821. i will

  822. be your

  823. god

  824. you

  825. will be

  826. my people

  827. and i

  828. will dwell

  829. with you

  830. forever

  831. and so we

  832. see here

  833. that same

  834. god

  835. in the

  836. midst of

  837. the death

  838. of loved

  839. ones

  840. coming

  841. and remaining

  842. faithful

  843. to his

  844. people

  845. and so we

  846. as well

  847. can look

  848. to god

  849. knowing

  850. that he

  851. has not

  852. given up

  853. on us

  854. if we

  855. are part

  856. of god's

  857. family

  858. then the

  859. presence

  860. of tragedy

  861. in our

  862. lives

  863. does not

  864. mean that

  865. god

  866. is absent

  867. the presence

  868. of tragedy

  869. in our

  870. lives

  871. does not

  872. mean

  873. that god

  874. is absent

  875. the characters

  876. of this

  877. original story

  878. could look

  879. to the

  880. character

  881. of god

  882. they could

  883. look to

  884. the ways

  885. that he

  886. had provided

  887. in the

  888. past

  889. and they

  890. could look

  891. as well

  892. to verse

  893. six here

  894. that the

  895. lord had

  896. visited

  897. his people

  898. brothers and

  899. sisters

  900. the lord

  901. has visited

  902. us

  903. in a

  904. much more

  905. great

  906. dramatic

  907. and miraculous

  908. way

  909. because unlike

  910. those in the

  911. old testament

  912. who looked

  913. back to god's

  914. redemption

  915. from exodus

  916. we can

  917. look now

  918. and know

  919. even more

  920. about his

  921. character

  922. than they

  923. did

  924. because we

  925. know that

  926. his promise

  927. to be our

  928. god

  929. and be

  930. with us

  931. was fulfilled

  932. in christ

  933. that it was

  934. christ who

  935. came and

  936. took on

  937. the body

  938. of a man

  939. and lived

  940. among his

  941. people

  942. we just

  943. finished the

  944. gospel of

  945. matthew

  946. you remember

  947. in the very

  948. first chapter

  949. of matthew

  950. jesus is given

  951. a name

  952. do you remember

  953. what it is

  954. it's emmanuel

  955. which means

  956. god is

  957. with us

  958. and so we

  959. now can see

  960. even greater

  961. proof

  962. and a down

  963. payment on

  964. god's goodness

  965. and his

  966. love

  967. and like a

  968. good leader

  969. jesus was

  970. willing to

  971. suffer

  972. more

  973. than us

  974. and so the

  975. question of

  976. why

  977. god allows

  978. suffering

  979. is going to

  980. go unanswered

  981. but instead

  982. we have the

  983. assurance that

  984. in the midst

  985. of suffering

  986. he is with

  987. us

  988. he is with

  989. us and we

  990. know that we

  991. can trust him

  992. we know that we

  993. can trust him

  994. because he

  995. and his

  996. providence has

  997. ordained suffering

  998. but he ordained

  999. the most

  1000. for himself

  1001. that as

  1002. painful as it

  1003. is to be

  1004. separated from

  1005. someone that

  1006. you've been

  1007. intimately connected

  1008. with for decades

  1009. imagine how

  1010. painful it is to

  1011. be separated from

  1012. someone that

  1013. you've been

  1014. perfectly connected

  1015. to from all

  1016. eternity

  1017. and so that

  1018. christ in his

  1019. sufferings is the

  1020. greater and

  1021. fuller revelation

  1022. of god visiting

  1023. us as he did

  1024. the people of

  1025. israel

  1026. when i was

  1027. growing up

  1028. i was at a

  1029. small church

  1030. in this

  1031. denomination

  1032. and i knew a

  1033. family there

  1034. they had a

  1035. farm a long

  1036. way away and

  1037. that was where

  1038. i i believe i

  1039. rode a horse

  1040. for the first

  1041. time and got

  1042. to experience a

  1043. different life

  1044. than a general

  1045. suburban life

  1046. that i grew up

  1047. in and that

  1048. family had had

  1049. a very difficult

  1050. past there was a

  1051. time before i

  1052. met them where

  1053. they experienced

  1054. a traumatic car

  1055. accident so the

  1056. mother and the

  1057. children the father

  1058. was at home

  1059. and when the

  1060. police informed

  1061. him of what had

  1062. happened they

  1063. said your family

  1064. has been in a

  1065. devastating car

  1066. accident and we

  1067. have sent them to

  1068. two separate

  1069. hospitals because

  1070. there's no one

  1071. hospital that would

  1072. be able to save

  1073. all of them

  1074. and when we put

  1075. them in the

  1076. ambulance they

  1077. were alive but

  1078. we cannot give

  1079. you any guarantees

  1080. of how they're

  1081. doing now and

  1082. taking that news

  1083. the father had no

  1084. idea what to do

  1085. he would share his

  1086. testimony many times

  1087. and he said that

  1088. at that moment he

  1089. was unsure whether

  1090. to visit his wife

  1091. whom he'd vowed to

  1092. forsake all others

1093. for or to visit the

  1094. hospital that his

  1095. children were in

  1096. because they were

  1097. without a parent

  1098. and he was afraid

  1099. at the same time

  1100. that he would visit

  1101. the wrong one

1102. that he would go to

  1103. the one with the

  1104. dead and not the

  1105. living and in that

  1106. moment he felt

  1107. lonelier and more

  1108. isolated than he had

  1109. ever been and he

  1110. realized that there

1111. was no one in the

  1112. whole world who knew

1113. what he was facing at

  1114. that moment and there

  1115. was no one who

  1116. understood and then

  1117. the next thing he

  1118. remembered and thought

  1119. was that Jesus

  1120. understood remember

  1121. that Jesus had given

  1122. up even more and

  1123. suffered even more

1124. than he was even in

  1125. that moment and he

  1126. remembered that Jesus

  1127. loved him and had

1128. died for him and in

  1129. that moment that was

1130. the only thing he had

  1131. that Jesus was faithful

1132. to him and in that

  1133. moment while no one

  1134. else understood Jesus

  1135. was with him caring

  1136. for him providing for

  1137. him and guiding him

  1138. and that Jesus

  1139. understood when no one

  1140. else did

  1141. brothers and sisters

1142. Jesus is our great and

1143. mighty king and so we

1144. can follow him and we

1145. can trust him even in the

  1146. darkest of times

  1147. please pray with me

  1148. dear father in heaven

1149. we thank you that you

1150. are the king of kings

1151. and the lord of lords

1152. we thank you that in

  1153. your sovereignty you

  1154. gave yourself the greatest

  1155. suffering in this world

1156. and so even when we don't

1157. know why we know that you

  1158. are with us

  1159. that you're guiding us

  1160. you're protecting us and

  1161. you're providing for us

1162. we ask that you would

1163. remind us of that now

  1164. here this morning we

1165. ask all of this not

  1166. because we have earned

1167. it but because your son

1168. has earned it on our

1169. behalf and so we ask it

  1170. in his name amen

  1171. god

  1172. you
