  1. Good morning. It's my joy to bring God's Word to you again today. A reminder that we're in a series on the book of Ruth,

  2. and we are going to be starting here again in Ruth chapter 1, finishing the chapter at verses 19 through 22.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  3. I was reminded this week as I spoke with several of you, you shared with me how challenging it is at times to listen to the story of Ruth.

  4. Because as we've talked about, it's a book about suffering, and so for many of us, it brings up memories that are hard and sometimes difficult,

  5. perhaps memories that we would rather not think about if we didn't have to.

  6. And it also got me thinking that some of us grew up in families where hard things were never talked about.

  7. And I was reminded that here, as God's family, we have to talk about hard things.

  8. We have to talk about suffering and the things that happen to us in this world because that is the reality of life.

  9. It's the reality of life in a world that has been broken by sin.

  10. That we live in a place that is bleeding and broken because of the results of our rebellion against God.

  11. And so we want to talk about hard things, not because we enjoy them, but because we know, remember,

  12. we've talked about that God, as a loving Father, longs for us to be wise.

  13. He longs for us to be wise and prepared for the things that will face us as we walk as his children in this world.

  14. And so if you're suffering right now, remember that this book is for you.

  15. It's a reminder of how God thinks about suffering.

  16. And it's a reminder of his steadfast love to us in the midst of it.

  17. And if you're not suffering, remember that if you live in this world long enough, you will one day.

  18. And if you're not suffering right now, all you need to do is look around the room, people beside you and in front of you and behind you.

  19. And you will see people that are suffering right now.

  20. And so as God's people together, as one community, as one family, we want to be able to talk about hard things.

  21. Because God has given us the opportunity to do that in his word.

  22. And so again, we're in Ruth chapter 1, starting at verse 19.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  23. Remember that God tells us that his word is more precious than gold.

  24. Even the finest gold.

  25. And that it is sweeter than honey.

  26. Even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  27. And so we're going to go there right now.

  28. We're in Ruth chapter 1, starting at verse 19.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  29. So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem.

  30. And when they came to Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them.

  31. And the women said,

  32. Is this Naomi?

  33. She said to them,

  34. Do not call me Naomi.

  35. Call me Mara.

  36. For the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

  37. I went away full.

  38. And the Lord has brought me back empty.

  39. Why call me Naomi when the Lord has testified against me?

  40. And the Almighty has brought calamity upon me.

  41. So Naomi returned.

  42. And Ruth, the Moabite, her daughter-in-law with her, who returned from the country of Moab.

  43. And they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.

  44. Please pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  45. Dear Father in heaven,

  46. We thank you that you are a good and loving Heavenly Father.

  47. And so you haven't left us alone as orphans in a merciless universe.

  48. But you've come and you've spoken to us

  49. in words and ways that we can actually understand.

  50. And so we ask that you would come and help us this morning.

  51. That you would clear our minds.

  52. That you would open our eyes.

  53. That you would unstop our ears.

  54. And that you would soften our hearts.

  55. That we could see and hear and believe and understand

  56. everything that is written about you in your word.

  57. We ask this in the name of your Son.

  58. Amen.

  59. If you remember several years ago in February of 2015,

  60. if you were watching popular culture even a little bit,

  61. you are familiar with what is now known as the dress.

  62. And if you remember the dress,

  63. it was an image that showed up on the internet of this one dress from Europe

  64. that was unlike any other picture of any other dress.

  65. Because depending on who you were,

  66. you saw one of two different things.

  67. When some people looked at the dress,

  68. they saw a dress that was blue and black.

  69. And when other people looked at the very same picture,

  70. they saw a dress that was white and gold.

  71. And so it became this internet fascination

  72. as people tweeted and retweeted and posted

  73. about which of the two they could actually see.

  74. And there was debate about

  75. which was the true color of the dress.

  76. And why was it that people were so confused?

  77. About 70% of people would see,

  78. I believe it was the blue and the black,

  79. 30% the white or the gold.

  80. I might have that backwards.

  81. You might have to flip that number.

  82. But it wasn't even half and half.

  83. And so it was even more confusing

  84. why some people would see one and some the other.

  85. The story highlights an issue

  86. that we're going to see in this passage as well,

  87. that we can look at the very same thing.

  88. Two people can look at the same event,

  89. the same situation, the same facts,

  90. and come up with a very, very different interpretation.

  91. We can look at the same situation

  92. and come up with a very, very different interpretation.

  93. And if you follow the story of the dress,

  94. which became its own hashtag,

  95. if you want to look it up,

  96. you can just search hashtag the dress.

  97. And scientists tried to figure out

  98. why it was that people saw such different things.

  99. And I don't think it's completely conclusive even now,

  100. but part of it is that this picture was unique

  101. because it was challenging to understand the circumstances.

  102. Was the picture taken outside or inside?

  103. Was it taken in natural light or fluorescent light?

  104. And because it wasn't clear,

  105. different people's minds answered that question

  106. in different ways.

  107. And based on the assumptions,

  108. based on the interpretations that were made,

  109. your mind, without even realizing it,

  110. came to a conclusion.

  111. Took incomplete data and came to a complete conclusion.

  112. We're going to see the same issue happening with Naomi.

  113. Naomi has a set of very challenging circumstances

  114. in front of her.

  115. And she's not completely sure what's going on.

  116. In fact, we might even say she's decided

  117. based on incomplete information what is going on.

  118. She doesn't know the whole story.

  119. She doesn't know exactly what's happening,

  120. why it's happening,

  121. but she has decided to come to a conclusion.

  122. We see in the past,

  123. we know that she had left her homeland.

  124. She left the land of Israel to go to the land of Moab

  125. because there had been a famine.

  126. And while there,

  127. she had lost not only her husband,

  128. but her two sons.

  129. And so we saw in our first week,

  130. in verses 1 through 6,

  131. that even when tragedy strikes,

  132. God is still in charge.

  133. And then we saw last week in verses 6 through 18

  134. that when tragedy strikes,

  135. it's the responsibility of God's people

  136. to come alongside each other.

  137. But here the question is a little bit different.

  138. It's not the question of whether God's in charge.

  139. And it's not the question of whether or how

  140. we should come along those who are suffering.

  141. But instead it's the question of whether God is good.

  142. Whether he's loving.

  143. Whether he's still with us in the midst of suffering

  144. or he's abandoned us.

  145. And so it's not a question about his control,

  146. about what he can do.

  147. In fact, Naomi's going to refer to him here in verse 21

  148. as the Almighty.

  149. She knows that God has all the power.

  150. The question is,

  151. why has he not used it

  152. in a different way?

  153. She comes back to the town of Bethlehem in verse 19.

  154. Remember we saw in our very first week in Ruth

  155. that Naomi had heard that the famine

  156. that had caused her to leave her homeland was over.

  157. And she was heading back with her daughters-in-law

  158. in hopes that there would actually be a place

  159. for food there in her homeland.

  160. And as she comes back,

  161. remember we know that she's been gone for over 10 years.

  162. Because we found out in verse 4

  163. that after the marriage of her sons,

  164. they lived in Moab 10 years before their death.

  165. And so we can understand the surprise and the shock

  166. of other women in the town in verse 18 and 19.

  167. As she comes back, they say,

  168. is this actually Naomi?

  169. It's been over a decade since they've seen her.

  170. And they're experiencing the same reality that she is,

  171. that when she left,

  172. she had a husband.

  173. And when she came back,

  174. she did not.

  175. And so is this the same person

  176. with such a dramatic change in circumstances?

  177. Is this Naomi?

  178. We talked a couple weeks ago

  179. about the importance of names.

  180. Remember the name of Elimelech meant,

  181. my God is king.

  182. The name of Naomi

  183. means pleasant.

  184. It's another irony of names

  185. in the midst of this story.

  186. And she says,

  187. do not call me Naomi,

  188. so do not call me pleasant.

  189. Call me Mara.

  190. Because she no longer feels pleasant,

  191. instead she feels

  192. the meaning of Mara.

  193. You might see a note in your Bible there

  194. that it means bitter.

  195. And so because of the circumstances in her life,

  196. she who was pleasant

  197. is now bitter.

  198. Her response

  199. to the events

  200. is one of bitterness.

  201. And we find out why

  202. in that same verse,

  203. in verse 20.

  204. For the Almighty has dealt

  205. very bitterly with me.

  206. I went away full,

  207. and the Lord has brought me back empty.

  208. Why call me Naomi

  209. when the Lord has testified against me,

  210. and the Almighty has brought

  211. calamity upon me.

  212. So don't call me pleasant.

  213. Call me bitter.

  214. Because once I was full,

  215. but now I'm empty.

  216. Have you ever felt like

  217. you have gone from

  218. full

  219. to empty?

  220. It might be

  221. a photo album

  222. emptiness.

  223. For some of us,

  224. when we look back

  225. at photo albums,

  226. we see pictures of

  227. people who are

  228. no longer with us.

  229. Maybe it's pictures

  230. that are not even

  231. in photo albums,

  232. but frames in our house

  233. that remind us

  234. of what once was,

  235. but isn't anymore.

  236. Maybe it's not pictures

  237. of people who were

  238. once with us,

  239. maybe it's pictures

  240. of people that are.

  241. Maybe you're a parent,

  242. and you look back

  243. at pictures of your children

  244. when they were young,

  245. and you see smiles

  246. on their faces,

  247. and you see them

  248. playing so well together,

  249. and you wonder,

  250. where did those smiles go?

  251. And why can't they

  252. get along anymore?

  253. Why two decades,

  254. three decades later,

  255. have things changed

  256. so much?

  257. Maybe you have

  258. pictures together

  259. of you as a family,

  260. and you used to spend

  261. time in holidays,

  262. and you see those,

  263. and then you think,

  264. why now?

  265. Why now do I only

  266. receive an email

  267. sometimes?

  268. And even then,

  269. it's not always

  270. a kind one.

  271. Maybe it's not

  272. a photo album

  273. emptiness.

  274. Maybe you once

  275. had work that you

  276. felt was purposeful

  277. and powerful.

  278. people called you

  279. with questions,

  280. and they wanted

  281. answers,

  282. but your phone

  283. doesn't ring anymore.

  284. Maybe it's a

  285. financial fullness.

  286. Maybe when things

  287. broke in your house,

  288. there was a time

  289. when you would

  290. just fix it.

  291. You would just

  292. buy a new one.

  293. You wouldn't ask

  294. any questions

  295. because it wasn't

  296. a problem.

  297. But now you wonder

  298. how you're going

  299. to scrape together

  300. the money that you

  301. need for the

  302. problems that you

  303. have.

  304. Maybe it's your body.

  305. You used to be able

  306. to do all sorts of

  307. things and all kinds

  308. of energy you had.

  309. And now you wonder,

  310. where did all that

  311. energy go?

  312. Where am I going

  313. to get the energy

  314. that I need for the

  315. tasks that are ahead

  316. of me?

  317. Wherever you are

  318. in life,

  319. I think many of us

  320. can resonate

  321. with Naomi here.

  322. There's places

  323. where we have felt

  324. full that we are

  325. now empty.

  326. And so that's

  327. where the dress

  328. becomes so important.

  329. How do we

  330. interpret

  331. going from

  332. full to

  333. empty

  334. when we don't

  335. have all the

  336. information?

  337. how are we

  338. going to

  339. interpret

  340. going from

  341. full to

  342. empty?

  343. We see the

  344. answer that

  345. Naomi has

  346. here.

  347. Remember I

  348. noted last week

  349. that she could

  350. have had a

  351. career as a

  352. lawyer.

  353. She does the

  354. same thing

  355. in verse

  356. 21.

  357. You notice

  358. the nouns

  359. and the verbs

  360. here.

  361. I went

  362. away

  363. full.

  364. full.

  365. But the

  366. Lord

  367. brought me

  368. back empty.

  369. I went

  370. away full

  371. but the

  372. Lord brought

  373. me back

  374. empty.

  375. So the

  376. fullness

  377. Naomi is

  378. giving to

  379. herself

  380. but the

  381. emptiness

  382. to the

  383. Lord.

  384. And there's

  385. a sense

  386. in which

  387. she's right

  388. in the

  389. sense that

  390. God is

  391. sovereign over

  392. everything.

  393. He controls

  394. the whole

  395. world.

  396. But she

  397. goes beyond

  398. that because

  399. she uses

  400. legal language

  401. here.

  402. the Lord

  403. has testified

  404. against me

  405. and the

  406. Almighty has

  407. brought calamity

  408. on me.

  409. And so it

  410. seems as if

  411. Naomi is

  412. giving an

  413. indirect accusation

  414. against God

  415. here.

  416. That somehow

  417. he has brought

  418. her to court.

  419. He's testified

  420. against her

  421. and he's

  422. decided that

  423. she has been

  424. found wanting.

  425. That he's

  426. going to bring

  427. suffering into

  428. her life

  429. perhaps because

  430. of some

  431. way that she's

  432. failed.

  433. Something she's

  434. done that

  435. is wrong.

  436. She believes

  437. that God

  438. is against

  439. her.

  440. There was a

  441. time when

  442. God was

  443. perhaps for

  444. her but

  445. now he's

  446. dealt her

  447. this hand and

  448. he's dealt

  449. it to her

  450. in such a

  451. way that she

  452. can't even

  453. address him.

  454. You notice

  455. that she

  456. doesn't cry

  457. out to God.

  458. She doesn't

  459. even say

  460. what the

  461. psalmist

  462. says in

  463. Psalm 13.

  464. She doesn't

  465. say how

  466. long oh

  467. Lord.

  468. She doesn't

  469. say why

  470. God.

  471. She speaks

  472. about him

  473. in the

  474. third

  475. person that

  476. he has

  477. done this

  478. to her.

  479. It sounds

  480. in a sense

  481. that either

  482. she believes

  483. that God

  484. has given

  485. her what

  486. she doesn't

  487. deserve or

  488. he has

  489. given her

  490. what she

  491. does deserve

  492. but she

  493. doesn't

  494. know why.

  495. There was

  496. a courtroom

  497. there was

  498. a scene

  499. in which

  500. she was

  501. tried but

  502. she wasn't

  503. even there

  504. to defend

  505. herself.

  506. She wasn't

  507. there to

  508. know what

  509. her crime

  510. was.

  511. So she

  512. fills in

  513. the blanks.

  514. She

  515. fills in

  516. the blanks

  517. for the

  518. information

  519. that she

  520. doesn't

  521. know.

  522. And we

  523. do the

  524. same thing

  525. as well

  526. do we

  527. not?

  528. Perhaps

  529. we've

  530. experienced

  531. suffering

  532. and we

  533. believe that

  534. like Naomi

  535. God is

  536. actually

  537. against us.

  538. That we

  539. have some

  540. secret sin

  541. that we're

  542. unaware of

  543. he's

  544. opposed us

  545. for it.

  546. And it's

  547. important at

  548. this point

  549. to differentiate

  550. between different

  551. types of

  552. suffering.

  553. There is

  554. suffering in

  555. this world

  556. that is the

  557. result of

  558. sin.

  559. There are

  560. times where

  561. we suffer

  562. direct

  563. consequences

  564. for things

  565. that we

  566. have done.

  567. There's

  568. times we

  569. suffer for

  570. things that

  571. other people

  572. have done.

  573. And then

  574. there's times

  575. we suffer

  576. just from

  577. the general

  578. sin and

  579. brokenness

  580. that is in

  581. this world.

  582. And there's

  583. no indication

  584. here in this

  585. passage that

  586. Naomi has

  587. done anything

  588. wrong.

  589. There's no

  590. indication that

  591. she has

  592. sinned in

  593. some way to

  594. bring this

  595. on her.

  596. But instead

  597. this is a

  598. child of

  599. God who

  600. is struggling

  601. to understand,

  602. struggling to

  603. interpret what

  604. is going on

  605. in her world.

  606. And so

  607. perhaps some

  608. of us have

  609. decided that,

  610. that God's

  611. against us.

  612. There are

  613. some of us

  614. who have

  615. decided perhaps

  616. this means

  617. that God

  618. doesn't exist

  619. anymore.

  620. Or that if

  621. he does,

  622. he's not worth

  623. worshiping.

  624. He's not worth

  625. coming to church

  626. for.

  627. That if God

  628. has taken us

  629. from full

  630. to empty,

  631. then why

  632. should we

  633. sing his

  634. praises?

  635. perhaps some

  636. of us

  637. have decided

  638. that God

  639. is sovereign

  640. and so we're

  641. not allowed

  642. to grieve.

  643. We're Romans

  644. 828 kind of

  645. people.

  646. We say God

  647. works all

  648. things together

  649. for good.

  650. And so I'm

  651. not going to

  652. try to interpret

  653. this.

  654. I'm just going

  655. to move on.

  656. And there's

  657. some truth to

  658. that.

  659. That's true.

  660. But we also

  661. need to balance

  662. Romans 828

  663. with Psalms

  664. like Psalm 13

  665. where the

  666. psalmist cries

  667. out and says,

  668. how long,

  669. O Lord?

  670. How long

  671. are you going

  672. to forget

  673. me?

  674. That it's

  675. right to

  676. cry out to

  677. God and

  678. tell him

  679. that we're

  680. in pain.

  681. We need

  682. to balance

  683. Romans 828

  684. with Psalm

  685. 88,

  686. which is the

  687. psalm of lament

  688. where the

  689. psalmist cries

  690. out to God

  691. and it's the

  692. one psalm of

  693. lament that

  694. doesn't end

  695. with crying

  696. out praises.

  697. Instead it

  698. ends with

  699. friends forgetting

  700. and abandoning.

  701. There's all

  702. kinds of

  703. different ways

  704. that we

  705. respond to

  706. suffering.

  707. So don't

  708. hear what I'm

  709. not saying.

  710. God is

  711. sovereign and

  712. in control

  713. and we

  714. take comfort

  715. in that.

  716. But it's

  717. also good

  718. and right

  719. to cry

  720. out to

  721. him,

  722. to argue

  723. with him,

  724. to ask

  725. him why.

  726. Here Naomi

  727. seems to have

  728. already decided.

  729. Perhaps we

  730. respond like

  731. Naomi in

  732. that we're

  733. bitter.

  734. Bitterness

  735. is deciding

  736. that what

  737. has happened

  738. to us

  739. is unjust.

  740. We don't

  741. deserve it.

  742. And that is

  743. going to be

  744. the focus

  745. of the rest

  746. of our

  747. life.

  748. You can

  749. spot a

  750. bitter person

  751. from a

  752. mile away

  753. not just

  754. because they

  755. lack joy

  756. but because

  757. their bitterness

  758. has become

  759. the thing

  760. that is most

  761. true about

  762. them.

  763. When you

  764. meet them

  765. they're quick

  766. to tell you

  767. about every

  768. bad thing

  769. that's happened

  770. to them.

  771. when they

  772. walk around

  773. all they

  774. can repeat

  775. to themselves

  776. is what's

  777. been done

  778. to them.

  779. Every

  780. unjust

  781. thing that's

  782. happened

  783. and we

  784. see that

  785. becomes

  786. this self

  787. focus.

  788. Naomi

  789. shows this

  790. to us.

  791. She can't

  792. see anything

  793. else that's

  794. going on

  795. around her

  796. because this

  797. bitterness

  798. has consumed

  799. her completely.

  800. It's all

  801. about me

  802. for Naomi

  803. in this

  804. moment.

  805. and it

  806. would be

  807. tempting

  808. to just

  809. criticize her

  810. for that.

  811. And yet

  812. any of us

  813. who have

  814. suffered

  815. something

  816. like this

  817. know how

  818. challenging

  819. it is

  820. in the

  821. moment

  822. to focus

  823. on anything

  824. else.

  825. Maybe

  826. for some

  827. of us

  828. it's not

  829. an

  830. interpretation

  831. but a

  832. lack

  833. of

  834. interpretation.

  835. We've

  836. decided

  837. we're

  838. never

  839. going to

  840. look at

  841. photo albums

  842. again.

  843. so that

  844. we don't

  845. have to

  846. think

  847. about it

  848. and we

  849. don't

  850. have to

  851. face it.

  852. Maybe

  853. we bury

  854. ourselves

  855. in

  856. activities.

  857. We keep

  858. ourselves

  859. so busy

  860. that we

  861. don't have

  862. to think

  863. about it.

  864. We don't

  865. have to

  866. contemplate

  867. going from

  868. full

  869. to empty.

  870. Maybe

  871. for some

  872. of us

  873. we found

  874. ways

  875. to numb

  876. it.

  877. It's

  878. easier

  879. to

  880. have

  881. another

  882. drink,

  883. to take

  884. a drug,

  885. worse

  886. than it

  887. is to

  888. face

  889. the

  890. pain

  891. of

  892. this

  893. world.

  894. And so

  895. this question

  896. of interpretation

  897. stands before

  898. all of us.

  899. When tragedy

  900. strikes,

  901. how are we

  902. going to

  903. make sense

  904. of it?

  905. How do we

  906. interpret

  907. what feels

  908. like at times

  909. swirling

  910. waters

  911. around us?

  912. Remember

  913. we asked

  914. before,

  915. is God

  916. still the

  917. king?

  918. is he

  919. still in

  920. charge?

  921. When the

  922. land of

  923. bread has

  924. no bread

  925. and God

  926. is my

  927. king,

  928. is dead.

  929. We saw

  930. yes,

  931. God is

  932. still the

  933. king,

  934. he's still

  935. in charge.

  936. But here

  937. is God

  938. still good?

  939. Is he

  940. against me?

  941. Has he

  942. forgotten

  943. me?

  944. Is he a

  945. king that's

  946. still in

  947. charge,

  948. but a

  949. king that

  950. is distant

  951. and removed

  952. and far

  953. away?

  954. And so

  955. maybe that's

  956. our response,

  957. that's our

  958. interpretation,

  959. it's anger

  960. at God.

  961. We've

  962. decided that

  963. it wasn't

  964. fair,

  965. it's not

  966. the way

  967. our life

  968. was supposed

  969. to go,

  970. and so

  971. we have

  972. this belief

  973. that God

  974. owes us

  975. something,

  976. and he

  977. hasn't

  978. delivered.

  979. I believe

  980. the dress

  981. was actually

  982. blue and

  983. black.

  984. that there

  985. were some

  986. people who

  987. saw the

  988. correct

  989. interpretation

  990. and some

  991. who saw

  992. the wrong

  993. one,

  994. based on

  995. what they

  996. filled in

  997. with the

  998. data.

  999. One

  1000. interesting

  1001. thing that

  1002. I read

  1003. was that

  1004. people who

  1005. are night

  1006. owls and

  1007. people who

  1008. are early

  1009. morning people

  1010. have a

  1011. tendency to

  1012. see it

  1013. differently.

  1014. Early

  1015. risers have

  1016. a tendency

  1017. to see it

  1018. as white

  1019. and gold,

  1020. and people

  1021. who stay

  1022. up late

  1023. at night

  1024. have a

  1025. tendency to

  1026. see it

  1027. as blue

  1028. and black,

  1029. because those

  1030. people have

  1031. trained their

  1032. eyes to

  1033. different types

  1034. of light.

  1035. So if you

  1036. get up early

  1037. in the morning

  1038. you're more

  1039. likely to

  1040. assume that

  1041. light is

  1042. natural light,

  1043. and if you

  1044. stay up at

  1045. night you're

  1046. more likely

  1047. to assume

  1048. it's not.

  1049. And based

  1050. on what your

  1051. mind assumes

  1052. you're going

  1053. to fill in

  1054. that data.

  1055. And so

  1056. the question

  1057. is what's

  1058. true and

  1059. what's false?

  1060. false.

  1061. Let's look

  1062. again at

  1063. Naomi's

  1064. statements

  1065. here in

  1066. this passage.

  1067. What's

  1068. true and

  1069. what's

  1070. false?

  1071. What's

  1072. true is

  1073. verse 20.

  1074. God is

  1075. almighty.

  1076. God is

  1077. in charge

  1078. and in

  1079. control of

  1080. all things.

  1081. Naomi gets

  1082. one thing

  1083. right,

  1084. and the

  1085. one thing

  1086. she gets

  1087. right is

  1088. that God

  1089. is in

  1090. control of

  1091. everything.

  1092. He is

  1093. the almighty.

  1094. But she

  1095. gets a lot

  1096. wrong as

  1097. well.

  1098. She says

  1099. here that

  1100. God is

  1101. against her,

  1102. that he

  1103. has dealt

  1104. bitterly with

  1105. her, and

  1106. that he

  1107. has brought

  1108. her back

  1109. empty.

  1110. And yet

  1111. what else

  1112. does Naomi

  1113. have?

  1114. Remember

  1115. we saw

  1116. in verse

  1117. six that

  1118. coincidentally,

  1119. or maybe

  1120. not so

  1121. coincidentally,

  1122. just as she

  1123. needed to

  1124. return,

  1125. that's when

  1126. the famine

  1127. ended in

  1128. Israel.

  1129. And even

  1130. though she

  1131. told her

  1132. daughters-in-law

  1133. to go

  1134. back,

  1135. God

  1136. provided

  1137. Ruth for

  1138. her.

  1139. That God

  1140. in his

  1141. never stopping,

  1142. never giving

  1143. up, always

  1144. and forever

  1145. love,

  1146. had provided

  1147. Ruth to

  1148. show that

  1149. same love

  1150. to her.

  1151. And so

  1152. when she

  1153. comes back,

  1154. she's not

  1155. coming back

  1156. by herself.

  1157. We see

  1158. even more

  1159. hints here

  1160. as well,

  1161. because it

  1162. tells us

  1163. in verse

  1164. 22,

  1165. so Naomi

  1166. returned,

  1167. and Ruth,

  1168. the Moabite,

  1169. her daughter-in-law,

  1170. with her,

  1171. who returned

  1172. from the

  1173. country of

  1174. Moab.

  1175. Remember

  1176. Ruth?

  1177. She was a

  1178. Moabite,

  1179. not an

  1180. Israelite.

  1181. and yet

  1182. she returned

  1183. with Naomi.

  1184. And Naomi

  1185. has two

  1186. problems,

  1187. one that

  1188. she is

  1189. defenseless,

  1190. but another

  1191. that she's

  1192. without food.

  1193. And how

  1194. does this

  1195. chapter

  1196. end?

  1197. And they

  1198. came to

  1199. Bethlehem,

  1200. the house

  1201. of bread,

  1202. at the

  1203. beginning

  1204. of barley

  1205. harvest.

  1206. of all

  1207. the times

  1208. that Naomi

  1209. could have

  1210. come back,

  1211. a woman

  1212. without

  1213. resources

  1214. for food,

  1215. she comes

  1216. back by

  1217. God the

  1218. Almighty's

  1219. providence

  1220. in a time

  1221. when food

  1222. is plentiful.

  1223. And as we'll

  1224. see in the

  1225. next chapter,

  1226. this is the

  1227. time and the

  1228. opportunity

  1229. when widows

  1230. would be able

  1231. to glean

  1232. and gather

  1233. food from

  1234. the fields

  1235. without charge.

  1236. And so Naomi

  1237. has experienced

  1238. tremendous

  1239. tragedy,

  1240. but she

  1241. is not

  1242. completely

  1243. empty.

  1244. And God

  1245. is not

  1246. against her.

  1247. In fact,

  1248. it is God

  1249. in the midst

  1250. of all of

  1251. this who is

  1252. providing and

  1253. guiding and

  1254. leading Naomi.

  1255. And in the

  1256. midst of her

  1257. self-focus,

  1258. and in the

  1259. midst of her

  1260. bitterness,

  1261. God meets

  1262. her not

  1263. with the

  1264. curse she

  1265. expects.

  1266. He meets

  1267. her not

  1268. with a

  1269. word of

  1270. rebuke

  1271. for her

  1272. unbelief.

  1273. He meets

  1274. her not

  1275. with turning

  1276. his face

  1277. away from

  1278. her.

  1279. But God

  1280. meets Naomi

  1281. in the midst

  1282. of her

  1283. suffering

  1284. with his

  1285. grace.

  1286. Because God

  1287. is not

  1288. against her,

  1289. but for

  1290. her.

  1291. he hasn't

  1292. given up

  1293. on her,

  1294. but he's

  1295. remembered

  1296. her.

  1297. Even

  1298. when she

  1299. can't

  1300. see it.

  1301. When I was

  1302. growing up,

  1303. my,

  1304. remember I

  1305. started a couple

  1306. weeks ago by

  1307. asking,

  1308. why do your

  1309. parents tell

  1310. you stories?

  1311. stories.

  1312. When I was

  1313. growing up,

  1314. my dad would

  1315. tell us stories

  1316. about his

  1317. time as a

  1318. Boy Scout.

  1319. And the

  1320. one that

  1321. stuck with me

  1322. maybe the

  1323. most is he

  1324. shared with us

  1325. about the

  1326. time when he

  1327. had to get

  1328. his lifeguard

  1329. merit badge,

  1330. his water

  1331. merit badge.

  1332. And he

  1333. learned about

  1334. the reality

  1335. of trying

  1336. to rescue

  1337. someone who's

  1338. drowning.

  1339. And he

  1340. told us that

  1341. when someone

  1342. is drowning,

  1343. their perception

  1344. of reality

  1345. is skewed.

  1346. And that

  1347. when you try

  1348. to rescue

  1349. them,

  1350. they'll push

  1351. you away.

  1352. In their

  1353. flailing,

  1354. in their

  1355. desperation,

  1356. they're

  1357. tempted to

  1358. believe that

  1359. the lifeguard

  1360. is not for

  1361. them,

  1362. but against

  1363. them.

  1364. And so if

  1365. you want to

  1366. be an

  1367. effective

  1368. lifeguard,

  1369. you actually

  1370. have to

  1371. approach from

  1372. behind so

  1373. that someone

  1374. who's drowning

  1375. can't see

  1376. you.

  1377. Because

  1378. otherwise,

  1379. what may

  1380. happen is

  1381. that both

  1382. you and

  1383. them will

  1384. go down.

  1385. Because they're

  1386. not going to

  1387. help you in

  1388. the midst of

  1389. that.

  1390. Because

  1391. overwhelmed by

  1392. the threat

  1393. that's in

  1394. front of them

  1395. and the

  1396. struggle that's

  1397. right before

  1398. them, in

  1399. the middle

  1400. of them,

  1401. they're

  1402. surrounded by

  1403. water.

  1404. That's all

  1405. they can see.

  1406. they can't

  1407. understand that

  1408. this person

  1409. who's come

  1410. to them is

  1411. trying to

  1412. help them.

  1413. Brothers and

  1414. sisters,

  1415. when it

  1416. feels like we

  1417. are drowning

  1418. in life,

  1419. it is our

  1420. temptation to

  1421. push God

  1422. away from

  1423. us.

  1424. But God,

  1425. in the middle

  1426. of all of it,

  1427. showing us

  1428. his grace,

  1429. is actually

  1430. the one

  1431. coming to

  1432. help us

  1433. reach the

  1434. top.

  1435. God is

  1436. the one

  1437. who is

  1438. coming to

  1439. rescue,

  1440. even when

  1441. it seems

  1442. like it's

  1443. the opposite.

  1444. And so we

  1445. began with

  1446. this question,

  1447. is God

  1448. still good

  1449. in the midst

  1450. of suffering?

  1451. is he still

  1452. for us?

  1453. One pastor

  1454. asks this

  1455. very question

  1456. and he

  1457. answers it

  1458. this way.

  1459. He says,

  1460. we don't

  1461. know why

  1462. God allows

  1463. these things

  1464. to happen,

  1465. but we

  1466. know why

  1467. not.

  1468. We know

  1469. it's not

  1470. because he's

  1471. given up on

  1472. us.

  1473. And we

  1474. know it's

  1475. not because

  1476. he doesn't

  1477. love us.

  1478. And the

  1479. reason we

  1480. know is

  1481. that when

  1482. we doubt,

  1483. we can

  1484. look and

  1485. see that

  1486. he put

  1487. his very

  1488. son on

  1489. the cross

  1490. to die

  1491. the death

  1492. that we

  1493. deserved

  1494. and to

  1495. endure more

  1496. suffering

  1497. than he

  1498. will ever

  1499. ask us

  1500. to do.

  1501. And so

  1502. when we're

  1503. drowning,

  1504. when it

  1505. feels like

  1506. everything around

  1507. us is sinking,

  1508. we can

  1509. know and

  1510. believe and

  1511. trust that

  1512. it is God

  1513. who is

  1514. helping us

  1515. come to

  1516. the top.

  1517. Please pray

  1518. with me.

  1519. Dear

  1520. Father in

  1521. heaven,

  1522. we thank

  1523. you that

  1524. in the

  1525. midst of

  1526. our

  1527. temptation

  1528. to

  1529. bitterness

  1530. and our

  1531. temptation

  1532. to despair,

  1533. fear,

  1534. that you

  1535. don't hold

  1536. it against

  1537. us,

  1538. and that

  1539. even when

  1540. we take

  1541. our eyes

  1542. off of

  1543. you,

  1544. you never

  1545. take your

  1546. eyes off

  1547. of us.

  1548. We ask

  1549. that you'd

  1550. remind us

  1551. of it,

  1552. you'd

  1553. encourage

  1554. us,

  1555. and you'd

  1556. enable us

  1557. more and

  1558. more to

  1559. see you

  1560. and to

  1561. praise you

  1562. and to

  1563. know you,

  1564. even in

  1565. the midst

  1566. of difficult

  1567. circumstances.

  1568. We ask

  1569. all these

  1570. things in

  1571. the name

  1572. of your

  1573. son.

  1574. Amen.

  1575. Amen.

  1576. Amen.
