  1. Imagine, if you can, Christ's church attempting to live faithfully and surrounded by these circumstances.

  2. There's an intrusive government, and it's taxing people excessively,

  3. and it spends the tax money on unjust and murderous causes.

  4. Marriage comes under attack as promiscuity and sexual immorality become more and more mainstream.

  5. The makeup of the society was diverse in ethnicities, nationalities, and religions,

  6. but there was an anything-goes culture that threatened to cause many to abandon any sort of sense of right and wrong.

  7. Political corruption, bribery, blackmail, and cover-up seemed like everyday news.

  8. Economic and social classes were at war with one another.

  9. The top 1% had the ability to buy influence and justice,

  10. and it seemed like they lorded their power over the other 99%.

  11. And the nation's lawmakers were aware of the injustice,

  12. but they were either incapable or unwilling to do anything about it.

  13. Sound familiar?

  14. Of course, I'm talking about Rome in the first century.

  15. What were you thinking of?

  16. As someone famous once said,

  17. history doesn't always repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

  18. I like that.

  19. History doesn't always repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

  20. And so the words of Romans 13 are as much for this time as they were for the Christians of Rome in the first century.

  21. And God's word here brings us a comfort in the circumstances that we recognize

  22. that are similar to the circumstances of Rome.

  23. And as it often does, it brings a challenge with that comfort as well.

  24. The Lord has a way of doing these things simultaneously,

  25. challenging while he comforts and comforts while he challenges.

  26. He did this very thing in the middle of the greatest persecution in history,

  27. the Roman persecution.

  28. And the simultaneity of this comfort and challenge is summed up well

  29. as Paul closes chapter 12 of the book to the church in Rome.

  30. He says,

  31. As if to say,

  32. evil will not overcome you.

  33. There's a comfort there.

  34. All you have to do is overcome evil with good.

  35. The challenge in the midst of the comfort.

  36. To overcome evil with good.

  37. So Paul goes on from there in Romans 13

  38. to describe the calling of Christians

  39. in the midst of this unjust human rule.

  40. And he says something that's a little bit frustrating.

  41. He says,

  42. Just pay them.

  43. Pay what's owed to them.

  44. Taxes to whom taxes are owed.

  45. Revenue to whom revenue is owed.

  46. Respect to whom respect is owed.

  47. And honor to whom honor is owed.

  48. And we might say honor.

  49. Honor to corrupt officials.

  50. If I was a believer in the church in Rome,

  51. I might be saying,

  52. Paul, give me something practical.

  53. Practical to stand up under injustice.

  54. To do something to reverse it.

  55. And Paul, you're telling me just to submit to it.

  56. Even enable it, we might say.

  57. But I hope we see,

  58. as we examine the passage today,

  59. that Paul's challenge and his comfort

  60. is a much higher calling than we would have imagined.

  61. Would be our duty in the present corruption of the world.

  62. So let's go into the passage for,

  63. the New Testament passage for this morning,

  64. which is Romans chapter 13,

    Romans 13:8

  65. verses 8 and 10.

  66. 8 to 10.

  67. This is the word of God.

  68. He says,

  69. O no one anything except to love each other.

  70. For the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

  71. For the commandments,

  72. you shall not commit adultery,

  73. you shall not murder,

  74. you shall not steal,

  75. you shall not covet,

  76. and any other commandment are summed up in this word.

  77. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  78. Love does no wrong to a neighbor.

  79. Therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.

  80. Lord, by your Holy Spirit,

  81. will you shed light on your gospel

  82. through the preaching

  83. and the careful hearing of the word today.

  84. Amen.

  85. So love is the fulfillment of the law.

  86. There's the bedrock.

  87. This is where Paul goes to guide Christians

  88. who are frustrated with evil and injustice.

  89. He doesn't give you practical advice

  90. for redeeming the culture.

  91. He doesn't give the people instructions

  92. on how to organize politically.

  93. He just moves from the first section of Romans 13,

  94. which talks about honoring our civil magistrate,

  95. the government officials,

  96. our elected officials in our case.

  97. He moves from honoring your government leaders

  98. to the broader principle of loving your neighbor.

  99. So let's start from verse 8

  100. and see why Paul would land on this theme

  101. as a response to evil.

  102. He says,

  103. O no one anything except to love each other.

  104. And now the first thing to understand about this

  105. is it's not a command forbidding any sort of debt

  106. when he says,

  107. O no one anything.

  108. Debt's an abiding reality of this world.

  109. Even in Romans 13, 7,

  110. the seventh verse of the passage,

  111. Paul is talking about paying debts

  112. to whom they are owed,

  113. specifically to the government.

  114. And if you are,

  115. we all pay taxes, right?

  116. If you are a business owner,

  117. you live in a perpetual state of debt, right?

  118. You pay your taxes after they are owed quarterly or yearly.

  119. You are continually owing taxes to your government.

  120. If you are an employee,

  121. you have taxes that you pay at the end of the year

  122. and the government owes you, right?

  123. There's this relationship of debt

  124. that just exists perpetually among us,

  125. particularly to our government.

  126. So Paul's words are,

  127. O no one anything.

  128. But we shouldn't understand that

  129. to mean a blanket prohibition of any kind of debt.

  130. Matthew 5, 42 specifically,

  131. where Jesus says,

  132. Give to the one who begs from you

  133. and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

  134. And so there Jesus actually commands us

  135. to be involved in debt,

  136. if you think about it.

  137. And he commands specifically

  138. that we would lend to others compassionately.

  139. I like the way Jesus puts it in Luke,

  140. Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  141. He says,

  142. Love your enemies,

  143. do good and lend,

  144. expecting nothing in return,

  145. and your reward will be great.

  146. And you will be sons of the Most High,

  147. for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

  148. So there are kinds of debt,

  149. debts that are monetary and otherwise,

  150. that bring God glory.

  151. And how do we understand

  152. what kind of debt brings God glory?

  153. The principle that we extract

  154. from these scriptures is twofold.

  155. Good debt occurs,

  156. God-glorifying debt occurs,

  157. when the lender lends compassionately.

  158. That's the first principle.

  159. And not for gain.

  160. Think about how many relationships,

  161. how many friends and families

  162. have been broken by money.

  163. Why do you suppose that is?

  164. Because when most people lend,

  165. they tie up their relationship

  166. with their return on their investment.

  167. When you lend money to another,

  168. the temptation is to expect that back,

  169. and when it doesn't come back,

  170. your relationship is severed.

  171. You've tied up your relationship

  172. with the money that was owed.

  173. And relationships are ruined.

  174. So when we lend,

  175. we ought to do it compassionately.

  176. And we don't expect our reward,

  177. Jesus says,

  178. to be payment in kind.

  179. We expect nothing in return.

  180. We lend out of a heart of compassion.

  181. The second principle of godly debt

  182. is when the debtor shows honor

  183. by discharging the debt promptly and joyfully.

  184. When the lender lends compassionately

  185. and expects nothing in return,

  186. and then the debt is returned,

  187. the debtor is now freely honoring

  188. the one who gave by giving it back.

  189. So the debtor's obligation

  190. was not the money in the first place,

  191. but the honor due

  192. to a friend who showed compassion.

  193. And likewise,

  194. the lender's reward

  195. is not a return on an investment,

  196. but honor.

  197. Honor for the compassion they showed.

  198. The Lord offers his reward

  199. to those who lend compassionately

  200. and to debtors who show honor

  201. by discharging their debts promptly.

  202. This is the meaning of Paul's words,

  203. owe nothing to anybody.

  204. The Christians in Rome, like we do,

  205. have ever-present debts to pay

  206. to the evil and to the ungrateful.

  207. And when they paid those debts honorably,

  208. they reflected God's own love.

  209. Because he is kind

  210. to the ungrateful and to the evil.

  211. So the commandment is,

  212. demonstrate your love,

  213. demonstrate your love to God

  214. by discharging your debts quickly.

  215. Taxes to whom taxes are owed.

  216. Revenue to whom revenue is owed.

  217. Honor to whom honor.

  218. Respect to whom respect.

  219. And we are to discharge all these debts,

  220. except the one that can never be fully paid up.

  221. And that debt is to love one another.

  222. To love each other,

  223. in the words of Romans 8, 14,

  224. or 13, 8.

  225. I'm reading from the ESV.

  226. What is it to love each other,

  227. in verse 8?

  228. Is it the Christians we're in fellowship with,

  229. here today,

  230. or is it all mankind?

  231. And it would be nice if we could just say

  232. this applies only to the household of faith,

  233. to love each other,

  234. which would be a difficult enough command

  235. to obey well.

  236. But it's not.

  237. The context is God's law.

  238. And as we know,

  239. God's law is not just for God's people.

  240. God's law is the standard of living,

  241. righteous living for all men.

  242. So in the context of God's law,

  243. this loving each other

  244. must also be as broad as the law itself,

  245. applying to all mankind.

  246. It's neighbor love,

  247. in the way that Jesus showed us

  248. what neighbor love is,

  249. in the parable of the Good Samaritan.

  250. But does Paul mean to tell us

  251. that this neighbor love is a kind of debt?

  252. Think about that for a second.

  253. If love is a debt,

  254. doesn't that take away some of the freeness

  255. of our expressions to love,

  256. to each other?

  257. Doesn't that reduce acts of love

  258. to just mere transactions?

  259. I'd like you to think about it this way.

  260. There's a knock on your door

  261. in the middle of the night,

  262. and it's your close neighbor,

  263. the neighbor you love,

  264. asking to borrow your car

  265. because her mother's having a seizure

  266. and she needs to take her to the hospital.

  267. What is it that you do?

  268. You love your neighbor,

  269. so what are you going to do?

  270. You won't have to think about

  271. what you're going to do.

  272. You're going to help your neighbor

  273. in her time of need.

  274. In fact, even though it's the middle of the night

  275. and all you want to do

  276. is go back to bed,

  277. you won't even ask

  278. the basic practical questions.

  279. What's wrong with your car?

  280. Why don't you just call an ambulance?

  281. Practical questions, right?

  282. I'm not unreasonable

  283. for wondering that in my mind,

  284. but what am I doing in that moment?

  285. If I love my neighbor,

  286. I don't even ask them.

  287. My neighbor has a need,

  288. and that need

  289. has created a debt.

  290. It's created a debt

  291. because I love them.

  292. So I don't ask those questions

  293. in that moment

  294. because I absolutely know

  295. the debt that I have

  296. towards my neighbor

  297. is to fulfill her request

  298. out of neighbor love.

  299. I could expand that illustration

  300. from this morning.

  301. My tire pressure is fatally low.

  302. I give a call to John Alpeter.

  303. What does John Alpeter do?

  304. There's probably taxis in the area, right?

  305. Just get here.

  306. But I don't

  307. because the neighbor love in John says,

  308. I see a need.

  309. I've been asked to supply it.

  310. That's my duty.

  311. I do it not out of a sense of duty,

  312. but because the love

  313. has created that duty in me.

  314. So does the debt,

  315. the fact that love is a debt,

  316. take away from the freedom

  317. involved in works of compassion?

  318. No.

  319. The fact that we sense

  320. that this reality is a debt

  321. is evidence of our compassion

  322. for one another

  323. because love produced in us

  324. that sense of debt.

  325. Jesus explained to us this

  326. when he was teaching

  327. his disciples to pray.

  328. This is from Luke 11.

  329. He said to them,

  330. Which one of you who has a friend

  331. will go to him at midnight

  332. and say to him,

  333. Friend, lend me three loaves,

  334. for a friend of mine

  335. has arrived on a journey

  336. and I have nothing to set before him.

  337. And he will answer from within,

  338. Don't bother me.

  339. The door is now shut

  340. and my children are with me in bed.

  341. I cannot get up

  342. and give you anything.

  343. I tell you,

  344. though he will not get up

  345. and give him anything

  346. because he is his friend,

  347. yet because of his impudence

  348. he will rise and give him

  349. whatever he needs.

  350. And Jesus' point is to say

  351. that even a mediocre friend

  352. will answer the request

  353. of a neighbor

  354. based on an earnest plea.

  355. You might call this

  356. the parable of the terrible lazy friend.

  357. A mediocre friend

  358. you can count on to do this

  359. if you are earnest

  360. and plea earnestly.

  361. They will sense that debt to you,

  362. though their love is weak.

  363. So the passage that you heard

  364. in Proverbs

  365. tells you the same thing.

  366. I'll read it again,

  367. Proverbs 3, 27 to 28.

  368. Do not withhold good

  369. from those to whom it is due

  370. when it is in your power

  371. to do it.

  372. Do not say to your neighbor,

  373. Go and come again.

  374. Tomorrow I will give it

  375. when you have it with you.

  376. Because the love

  377. that fulfills the law

  378. is our response

  379. to the debt

  380. that love creates

  381. towards those in need.

  382. So what's this law

  383. of neighbor love

  384. teaching us?

  385. If your neighbor

  386. asks for help

  387. and you have the ability,

  388. you have the power,

  389. you incurred a debt

  390. because you love them.

  391. Because, as Proverbs says,

  392. you have it with you.

  393. When you have it with you

  394. to supply your neighbor's need

  395. and your neighbor asks,

  396. there's nothing else love does

  397. but supplies the need.

  398. not from unwillingness

  399. but from love

  400. that proceeds

  401. from our relationships.

  402. So there are three simple things

  403. that create this debt

  404. of love for us.

  405. Three things that love creates

  406. in us

  407. that equate to a debt.

  408. Number one,

  409. it's the need.

  410. If there's a need present

  411. in another.

  412. And number two,

  413. there's the opportunity.

  414. The opportunity

  415. or our occasion

  416. to supply that need.

  417. And maybe the occasion

  418. is just the occasion

  419. of being asked.

  420. We have the opportunity

  421. because there are a need

  422. and we're asked to supply it.

  423. And the ability.

  424. Do we have the ability

  425. to supply the need?

  426. The need,

  427. the opportunity,

  428. and the ability.

  429. These create

  430. the debt of love

  431. between us

  432. as believers,

  433. between us and unbelievers.

  434. It's a mark

  435. of the Christian life

  436. that the Lord

  437. will frequently bring

  438. the needs of others

  439. in contact

  440. with our ability

  441. and our opportunity.

  442. That's how the Lord works.

  443. It's a debt

  444. that we will never

  445. fully discharge

  446. and therefore

  447. we can owe no one anything

  448. but our debt of love

  449. will always remain with us.

  450. The love that fulfills

  451. the law

  452. is a love

  453. that seeks to apply

  454. our abilities

  455. to others' needs

  456. and it is never

  457. fully completed.

  458. Anytime we look

  459. at God's law now,

  460. we should not only look

  461. at how we should obey

  462. the spirit of it

  463. but also what it teaches us

  464. about the God we serve.

  465. We know that every one

  466. of God's laws

  467. was given to us

  468. because it expresses

  469. something about

  470. his many perfections,

  471. about his nature

  472. in other words.

  473. And love for the other

  474. is integral

  475. to God's very being.

  476. How do we know this?

  477. Well, let's ask ourselves

  478. the reason

  479. why we ought to obey

  480. this command

  481. to love each other.

  482. We need to obey

  483. because God commanded it.

  484. That's true.

  485. But that's not

  486. the most true.

  487. The most true reason

  488. I will assert

  489. that we obey

  490. this command

  491. is because

  492. God is doing it.

  493. not because God

  494. said it merely.

  495. We obey the command

  496. because God

  497. does it.

  498. God

  499. was loving each other

  500. before the world

  501. was created.

  502. Think about that.

  503. Before we were all here,

  504. before there was anything,

  505. God existed

  506. in a relationship

  507. of love

  508. to each other.

  509. The Father

  510. loves the Son,

  511. loves the Holy Spirit,

  512. and back and forth.

  513. God was an eternal community,

  514. is an eternal community,

  515. of love

  516. toward the other.

  517. God loves

  518. his neighbor.

  519. And he did it

  520. before there was creation.

  521. So we love

  522. our neighbor

  523. not out of

  524. a respect

  525. for a command,

  526. though that is part of it,

  527. but out of a love

  528. for God

  529. and who he is,

  530. that we would seek

  531. to emulate his nature.

  532. As a matter of fact,

  533. God's love

  534. for one another

  535. is one of the things

  536. that Jesus longed for

  537. when he was on earth,

  538. to ascend again

  539. and share the glory

  540. that he had

  541. with the Father

  542. before the world was.

  543. That's from John 17, 5,

  544. where Jesus says,

  545. And now, Father,

  546. glorify me

  547. in your own presence

  548. with the glory

  549. that I had with you

  550. before the world existed.

  551. Christ,

  552. in his dwelling

  553. here on earth

  554. in flesh,

  555. longed for

  556. the fellowship

  557. that he had

  558. with God

  559. from eternity,

  560. the love that he shared

  561. with his Father.

  562. So God loves the other

  563. perfectly within himself,

  564. and then

  565. he brought forth

  566. a creation

  567. to share in that love.

  568. And ultimately,

  569. God met our need

  570. with his ability.

  571. The first time

  572. the Lord told his people,

  573. love your neighbor

  574. as yourself,

  575. that wasn't in Matthew

  576. that we just read.

  577. It was way back

  578. in Leviticus,

  579. Leviticus 19, 18.

  580. God said,

  581. here's the command

  582. I give you,

  583. you shall love your neighbor

  584. as yourself.

  585. And he gave them

  586. this reason.

  587. He said,

  588. you shall love your neighbor

  589. as yourself.

  590. I am the Lord.

  591. What's the reason given?

  592. That God asked us

  593. to love our neighbors

  594. as ourselves?

  595. Because I'm the Lord.

  596. I'm the one who does it.

  597. Do what I do.

  598. That's the heart

  599. of all of his commandments.

  600. And once God said this

  601. to his people,

  602. the wheels were set in motion.

  603. Once the people of God

  604. knew that God's nature

  605. was to love his neighbor,

  606. we could be certain,

  607. we could take it

  608. to the bank

  609. that God will supply

  610. his people's need.

  611. And what was the need

  612. that God's people

  613. were going to have?

  614. The need of God's people

  615. was that their guilt

  616. kept them distant

  617. and its penalty

  618. was too much to bear.

  619. We had a death sentence

  620. and we needed escape.

  621. That was our need.

  622. And that's what God

  623. decreed from eternity

  624. that he would supply.

  625. And that decree

  626. is expressed

  627. in Leviticus 19.

  628. You shall love

  629. your neighbor as yourself.

  630. I am the Lord.

  631. I am the one

  632. who does it.

  633. So it was clear

  634. once God said this,

  635. if we were paying attention,

  636. that he will certainly

  637. save his people

  638. who were in need.

  639. So the need was expressed.

  640. We had guilt.

  641. We had a death sentence

  642. upon us.

  643. God had an ability.

  644. What's the ability of God?

  645. Well, the scripture says

  646. to do far more abundantly

  647. than we ask or think.

  648. And there was an opportunity.

  649. The opportunity

  650. that God alone created.

  651. A decree for eternity

  652. that we are given

  653. in Ephesians 1.

  654. I'll read this

  655. starting from the first

  656. of the chapter.

  657. Blessed be the God

  658. and Father

  659. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  660. who has blessed us

  661. in Christ

  662. with every spiritual blessing

  663. in the heavenly places

  664. even as he chose us in him

  665. before the foundation

  666. of the world

  667. that we should be holy

  668. and blameless before him.

  669. That decree resulted

  670. in a debt

  671. or if you'd rather

  672. an oath

  673. to meet his people's need

  674. through a sacrifice

  675. of infinite worth.

  676. Think about that.

  677. The debt that God

  678. creates for himself.

  679. Paul goes on

  680. in Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:15

  681. verse 15.

  682. He says,

  683. What did he do?

  684. He broke down

  685. the dividing wall

  686. of hostility

  687. by abolishing

  688. the law of commandments

  689. expressed in ordinances

  690. that he might create

  691. in himself

  692. one new man

  693. in place of the two

  694. and so making peace

  695. and he might reconcile

  696. us both to God

  697. in one body

  698. through the cross

  699. thereby killing

  700. the hostility.

  701. How can God

  702. in Christ

  703. abolish those commandments?

  704. By living them out.

  705. By living them out

  706. in neighbor love

  707. and giving us

  708. the example

  709. and creating us

  710. the spirit

  711. to live by it.

  712. Jesus taught us

  713. that our father

  714. binds himself

  715. to this sort of debt

  716. but that debt

  717. isn't to us.

  718. That debt's

  719. to his own nature.

  720. He made a decree

  721. and he must

  722. by his own nature

  723. complete it.

  724. So we will assuredly

  725. receive our help

  726. in our time of need

  727. because of the debt

  728. incurred by his love

  729. for us.

  730. Specifically

  731. what he did

  732. is he took

  733. the righteous law

  734. that separated him

  735. from an unrighteous people

  736. and he created

  737. in himself

  738. the one new man

  739. in the place of the two.

  740. The one new man

  741. in the likeness of Adam

  742. and in the likeness of God

  743. right?

  744. Which is our likeness now.

  745. We have the likeness

  746. of Adam remaining

  747. but what unifies us

  748. to Christ

  749. it is the likeness

  750. of God in us

  751. the Holy Spirit

  752. indwelling us.

  753. He created in us

  754. first in Christ

  755. and then in us

  756. the one new man

  757. the one new woman

  758. in place of the two

  759. and thereby

  760. he made peace

  761. between man and God

  762. through Christ

  763. on the cross.

  764. In John 3.16

  765. the familiar verse

  766. God loved

  767. each other.

  768. God loved the world

  769. in John 3.16

  770. but what is he speaking of?

  771. He's speaking of God

  772. who loves

  773. his neighbor

  774. his neighbor

  775. within the Godhead

  776. and his neighbor

  777. his creation.

  778. That loving each other

  779. is God simply telling us

  780. what he does

  781. so that those who love him

  782. can be like him.

  783. So we see the mystery

  784. of this truth

  785. now coming full circle.

  786. One, the law exists

  787. to explain to us

  788. how we can love

  789. our neighbor

  790. and then

  791. if we have loved

  792. our neighbor

  793. we have fulfilled

  794. the law.

  795. Though that fulfillment

  796. resides in us

  797. still

  798. we remain ever bound

  799. to discharge

  800. the debt

  801. of love to others.

  802. And in a more broader

  803. and a broader

  804. and more perfect way

  805. Christ fulfilled the law

  806. once for all

  807. through his life

  808. and through his death.

  809. And intrinsic

  810. to that fulfillment

  811. is the fact

  812. that he sits

  813. at the right hand

  814. of God

  815. ever binding himself

  816. to meet our need

  817. out of the debt

  818. of love

  819. that he created

  820. for us.

  821. Remember Jesus'

  822. illustration

  823. in the parable

  824. of the terrible

  825. lazy friend?

  826. He told us

  827. that story

  828. to explain

  829. how much more

  830. we should be sure

  831. that God

  832. who is better

  833. than a mediocre friend

  834. whose love surpasses

  835. the kind

  836. that we find

  837. in any friend

  838. will assuredly

  839. supply our need.

  840. He finishes

  841. that story

  842. in Luke 11 verse 9

    Luke 11:9

  843. and he says

  844. I start in verse 8

  845. I tell you though

  846. that neighbor

  847. he will not get up

  848. and give him anything

  849. because he is his friend

  850. yet because of his impudence

  851. he will rise

  852. and give him

  853. whatever he needs

  854. and I tell you

  855. ask

  856. and it will be given you

  857. seek

  858. and you will find

  859. knock

  860. and it will be open

  861. to you.

  862. In Christ

  863. God perfectly

  864. and completely

  865. fulfilled

  866. all points

  867. of the law

  868. which means

  869. he has demonstrated

  870. the epitome

  871. of neighbor love

  872. rescuing us

  873. out of our deepest

  874. and most desperate need

  875. namely our own

  876. death sentence.

  877. So we love each other

  878. not merely because

  879. God said it

  880. but because

  881. God does it.

  882. He creates in us

  883. the same love

  884. as well.

  885. The one who loves

  886. another

  887. the end of verse 8

  888. in our passage

  889. has fulfilled the law.

  890. Paul uses the words

  891. has fulfilled

  892. in the perfect sense

  893. and he doesn't merely say

  894. he has obeyed the law

  895. he has fulfilled the law

  896. the one who loves

  897. his neighbor.

  898. That has a fuller

  899. and deeper meaning

  900. than simply obeyed.

  901. If I just obey the law

  902. by loving one another

  903. the rest of the commandments

  904. remain to be obeyed

  905. but if I have fulfilled the law

  906. there is nothing lacking

  907. if I have loved my neighbor.

  908. John Murray

  909. summarizes that

  910. by saying this

  911. the law has received

  912. the full measure

  913. of that which it requires

  914. in loving our neighbor.

  915. That fulfilling

  916. means the law

  917. has received

  918. the full measure

  919. of that which it requires.

  920. It's not saying

  921. love has replaced the law.

  922. It's not that

  923. it's a better thing

  924. to love

  925. rather than

  926. obey the law.

  927. It's that the law

  928. itself

  929. fulfills

  930. in a way that

  931. the law

  932. rightly obeyed

  933. brings the fruits

  934. of love to others.

  935. Again John Murray

  936. has a great summary

  937. and this is worth

  938. writing down.

  939. John Murray says

  940. love fills to the brim

  941. the cup

  942. which the law

  943. puts into our hands.

  944. Love fills to the brim

  945. the cup

  946. which the law

  947. puts into our hands.

  948. It's as if we have a cup

  949. and that cup's giving shape

  950. to what we're about

  951. to put in it

  952. and we are

  953. given the cup

  954. in order to fill it

  955. and what we fill it with

  956. is love

  957. at the first drop

  958. every drop in between

  959. down to the last drop.

  960. There's nothing else

  961. that fulfills the law

  962. but the love

  963. that we put in it

  964. and there's no other

  965. commandment

  966. there's no other

  967. principle of God's law

  968. that fills the cup.

  969. Those are commandments

  970. and ordinances

  971. they teach us

  972. we become

  973. schooled

  974. by the ordinances

  975. so that we might

  976. love well

  977. and love effectively.

  978. Going on to verse 9

  979. for the commandments

  980. you shall not

  981. commit adultery

  982. you shall not murder

  983. you shall not steal

  984. you shall not covet

  985. and any other commandment

  986. are summed up

  987. in this word

  988. you shall love your neighbor

  989. as yourself.

  990. Now those who would say

  991. you talk about God's laws

  992. that's fine

  993. I just want to love

  994. as Jesus loved.

  995. When you hear that

  996. we understand

  997. that that person

  998. doesn't really understand

  999. what the love of God is

  1000. to say that

1001. don't tell me about the law

1002. I just want to love

  1003. as Jesus loved.

  1004. I don't need the law

  1005. in order to love

  1006. I just love instinctively.

  1007. That person doesn't

  1008. understand what God

  1009. did in us

1010. what he does in us

  1011. to produce neighbor love.

  1012. I thank God

  1013. for the Pharisees

  1014. they give us such

  1015. great examples

  1016. of perfect villains

  1017. yet they also give

  1018. the challenge

1019. that pokes at our heart

  1020. in our own hypocrisy

1021. and I'm going to read

  1022. this passage

  1023. from Matthew 23

  1024. where Jesus speaks

  1025. to the Pharisees

  1026. he says

  1027. woe to you

  1028. scribes and Pharisees

  1029. hypocrites

  1030. for you tithe

  1031. mint and dill

  1032. and cumin

  1033. and have neglected

  1034. the weightier matters

  1035. of the law

  1036. justice and mercy

  1037. and faithfulness

1038. these you ought to have done

  1039. without neglecting the others

  1040. you blind guides

  1041. straining out a nad

  1042. and swallowing a camel

  1043. woe to you

  1044. scribes and Pharisees

  1045. hypocrites

1046. for you clean the outside

  1047. of the cup

  1048. and the plate

  1049. but inside

  1050. they're full of greed

  1051. and self-indulgence

  1052. you blind Pharisee

  1053. first clean the inside

  1054. of the cup

  1055. and the plate

  1056. that the outside

  1057. may also be clean

  1058. woe to you

  1059. scribes and Pharisees

  1060. hypocrites

  1061. for you are like

  1062. whitewashed tombs

  1063. which outwardly appear beautiful

  1064. but within are full

  1065. of dead people's bones

  1066. and all uncleanness

  1067. so also you outwardly

  1068. appear righteous

  1069. to others

  1070. but within

  1071. you're full of hypocrisy

  1072. and lawlessness

  1073. right

1074. now to call a Pharisee

  1075. a hypocrite

  1076. was one thing

1077. but to call a Pharisee

  1078. lawless

1079. that was beyond the pale

  1080. the Pharisees

1081. at least by their own lips

  1082. loved the law

  1083. they loved God's law

1084. they loved it so much

1085. that they expanded on it

1086. and they taught the people

  1087. to do things beyond

  1088. God's law

  1089. but the trouble

  1090. with the Pharisees

1091. was not that they practiced

  1092. the law too minutely

1093. and knew it too well

1094. the problem with the Pharisees

  1095. is they didn't understand

  1096. the law at all

  1097. they appeared righteous

  1098. to others

1099. but they were really full

  1100. of unlawlessness

  1101. of lawlessness

  1102. they would strain out

  1103. a gnat

  1104. the mint

  1105. the dill

  1106. the cumin

  1107. things that Jesus said

  1108. yes do those

1109. but they swallowed a camel

  1110. because works without

  1111. works of the law

  1112. without neighbor love

  1113. are empty deeds

1114. this is what the person

  1115. is reacting to

  1116. when they say

  1117. you have the law

  1118. talk about the law

  1119. that's fine

  1120. I don't

  1121. I love

  1122. right

  1123. that's the hypocrisy

  1124. they're reacting to

  1125. they see that works

  1126. of the law

  1127. without love

  1128. are just empty deeds

  1129. like Paul says

  1130. in 1 Corinthians

  1131. if I give away

  1132. all I have

  1133. and I deliver up

1134. my body to be burned

1135. but I have not love

  1136. I gain nothing

1137. but on the other hand

  1138. to love without

  1139. the law

  1140. is just impotent

  1141. sentimentality

  1142. John

  1143. the apostle John

  1144. is a great person

  1145. to go to

  1146. who by the spirit

  1147. answers

  1148. what true love is

  1149. and he gives us

  1150. it's all the way

  1151. through 1 John

  1152. I'm going to read

  1153. 1 John chapter 5

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  1154. this is John

  1155. the apostle

  1156. telling us

  1157. what love is

  1158. by this we know

  1159. that we love

  1160. the children of God

  1161. when we love

  1162. and obey

  1163. when we love God

  1164. and obey his commandments

  1165. verse 3

  1166. for this is

  1167. the love of God

  1168. that we keep

  1169. his commandments

  1170. so there's no room

  1171. in scripture

  1172. for us to say

1173. I just want to love

  1174. my neighbor

  1175. I don't need

  1176. to be taught

  1177. by the law

  1178. don't give me law

  1179. give me love

  1180. because the law

  1181. is the shape

  1182. right

  1183. John Murray's

  1184. example of the cup

1185. the law is the shape

  1186. that love fills

  1187. you don't understand

  1188. love

  1189. if you haven't been

  1190. taught

  1191. by God's law

  1192. because as

  1193. Romans 13 says

  1194. and the ten commandments

  1195. show

  1196. love does no wrong

  1197. to a neighbor

  1198. therefore love

  1199. is the fulfilling

  1200. or the fulfillment

  1201. of the law

1202. the law is the shape

  1203. of love

1204. we work toward each other

  1205. it's the cup

  1206. that we fill

  1207. with works of love

  1208. without the law

  1209. without God's law

  1210. our works

  1211. are formless

  1212. our love is formless

  1213. it has no place

  1214. to abide

  1215. and without love

  1216. we just hold on

  1217. to an empty cup

  1218. we have a law

  1219. that's empty

  1220. and we're hopeless

  1221. to truly obey it

  1222. we're Pharisees

  1223. we have ordinances

  1224. but we don't have

  1225. the law

  1226. what God

  1227. Christ abolished

  1228. was the law

  1229. of commandments

  1230. and ordinances

  1231. the law remained

  1232. but without love

  1233. it is merely ordinances

  1234. without love

  1235. we hold on

  1236. to a law

  1237. that's empty

  1238. and then when you

  1239. look around

  1240. your neighborhoods

1241. or you look at CNN

  1242. and you can't help

  1243. but see evil

  1244. and corruption

  1245. and ingratitude

  1246. we remember

  1247. that our Lord's way

  1248. is to be kind

  1249. to the ungrateful

  1250. and to the evil

  1251. because we were also

  1252. ungrateful

  1253. and hostile toward God

1254. and what did Christ do
