  1. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the assistant pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian

  2. Church, and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you are new with us or you're visiting.

  4. We're glad you're here.

  5. And we're glad you're here, as I say every week, not because we are trying to fill seats,

  6. but because we are following Jesus together as one community.

  7. And we're convinced that there is no one so good that they don't need God's grace, and

  8. no one's so bad that they can't have it.

  9. And so we're convinced that God has something to say to everyone, and that everyone needs

  10. to hear what God has to say.

  11. Whether you called yourself a Christian for 10 years or your whole life, or whether you

  12. don't call yourself a Christian.

  13. Maybe you have questions or doubts or objections about Christianity.

  14. God, in his word, speaks so powerfully that he's willing to speak to all of those things.

  15. He's willing to speak to our faith, but also to our doubts and our questions.

  16. If you've been with us, you know that we're starting a series in the book of Philippians.

  17. And if you remember from last week, Philippians is a letter.

  18. It's a letter that's written to a church, and that church is much like our church.

  19. Now, that church in Philippi, it's a Roman city in Macedonia, would have been abound for

  20. about 10 years at the time that this letter was written.

  21. We've been around a little over 20, so it's a little bit different.

  22. But we're both still churches that are relatively young, still trying to unify and figure out

  23. how exactly we're going to move forward together in our community for the gospel.

  24. This church also had deacons and elders and saints, just like we do.

  25. We saw that in the very first verse.

  26. But this church also has struggles, and they're struggles like our struggles.

  27. This church has living in a culture that worships the emperor as king rather than Jesus.

  28. And so the congregants in it, these saints and deacons and elders, have to face opposition

  29. because of that.

  30. It's a church where, while everyone agrees about Jesus, they don't agree about how to pursue

  31. him.

  32. There's disagreement about the best way to do ministry, the best way to move forward.

  33. We're going to see that especially in chapter 2.

  34. And so this is a church like our church that's in difficult circumstances.

  35. And if that weren't enough, this church happens to be in a city like our city.

  36. Remember that Philippi was known for its military history, and it had a large number of military

  37. retirees and military families because of the tremendous benefits that were offered to them

  38. in that city that were not available in other parts of Macedonia.

  39. And that is because it was granted status as a Roman colony where other cities were not.

  40. And so Roman citizens and soldiers had special rights and privileges that they would not

  41. have had access to in other areas.

  42. And so in the midst of all these difficult circumstances, we saw last week that Paul places the accent

  43. mark on partnership in the gospel.

  44. That the gospel, which is the news about Christ's death and resurrection, not only in the past,

  45. but the power that it brings now, has to be joined with our partnership as we pursue

  46. it together.

  47. And so that great treasure of the gospel is what binds us together as one community.

  48. As we follow Jesus together as one community, that's the treasure that keeps us together.

  49. If you remember from last week, I said that the beginning of Paul's letters often function

  50. as a movie trailer.

  51. They tell us everything that's going to come later in the letter.

  52. And we're not done with the trailer.

  53. We only watched the first half last week.

  54. So we're going to be in the second half of the trailer this week in Philippians 1, verses

    Philippians 1:7–11

  55. 7 through 11.

  56. And if we saw last week the importance of what Paul tells us in verse 5, the importance of

  57. partnership for the gospel, this next section is going to answer the question for us, if

  58. that's so important, if a partnership in the gospel is so important, how do we know that

  59. we have a true partnership in the gospel?

  60. What does true partnership look like?

  61. What are its characteristics?

  62. Its results.

  63. And so that's my question for you if you call yourself a Christian.

  64. If you don't call yourself a Christian, then the question could be this, why is the gospel

  65. true?

  66. Why should I believe it?

  67. Why is it something that I should seriously consider?

  68. So we're going to ask that as we come now to Philippians chapter 1.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  69. We're going to start in verse 7.

  70. Remember that this is God's word.

  71. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold.

  72. Even the finest gold.

  73. And that it is sweeter than honey.

  74. Even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  75. And so we're going to turn to it now.

  76. We're in Philippians chapter 1 starting at verse 7.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  77. Verse 9.

  78. Please pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  79. Dear Father in heaven, we thank you that you, as Jesus tells us in the gospel of John, have

  80. not left us as orphans in a merciless universe.

  81. You haven't left us alone.

  82. But you've formed us together as a partnership.

  83. You've sent your son to pay the price for our sin.

  84. But even more than that, you speak to us.

  85. And you speak to us through your word in ways and words that we can actually understand.

  86. And so we ask for that understanding this morning that you would help us.

  87. That you would open our eyes and unstop our ears.

  88. That you'd soften our hearts and you'd give us clear minds that we could hear and see and understand and believe.

  89. Everything that is written about you in your word.

  90. And we ask all of this in the name of your son.

  91. Amen.

  92. If you remember from last week, Paul is filled with lots of emotions.

  93. He's filled with thankfulness in verse 3.

  94. And then in verse 4, his thankfulness moves to joy.

  95. And even more than that, in verse 6, we saw that he was sure.

  96. He had this confidence.

  97. He was sure that, as he says here,

  98. And so he seems to have a tremendous amount of confidence, of sureness, of joy, of thanksgiving in this partnership that he sees in the gospel between him and the Philippians.

  99. What is the basis of this joy for Paul?

  100. Why is he so sure that this is something that he can give thanksgiving for?

  101. Why is he convinced, in verse 6, that God is bringing this work to completion?

  102. Why is he convinced that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead isn't just work in generally in Christians,

  103. but it's work specifically in this congregation in Philippi?

  104. Even as they're in the midst of conflict and disagreement.

  105. Well, we find out in verse 7.

  106. He says,

  107. In other words, Paul is sure.

  108. He's confident.

  109. He's joyful.

  110. He's thankful.

  111. Because this congregation has stuck with him, both in the good times and in the bad times.

  112. Both in his imprisonment.

  113. Remember, Paul writes this letter from a Roman prison.

  114. Philippi was a city where he was in prison back in Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  115. And that's where we have the famous story of him singing in prison with Silas.

  116. The Philippian jailer is converted.

  117. That jailer is probably one of the recipients of this letter.

  118. They meet a woman named Lydia.

  119. Her and her whole family are converted to follow after Jesus.

  120. She's actually, Lydia's very wealthy, we find out.

  121. And so when we leave the church in Philippi in Acts,

  122. we find out that they're meeting in her house.

  123. She probably has a house large enough to fit all of them.

  124. And they stuck with him then.

  125. They stuck with him when things were going really well.

  126. Prison bars were being destroyed.

  127. He could have left the prison if he'd wanted to because God was doing a miracle there.

  128. He'd set them free.

  129. People were coming to faith.

  130. They had Paul, the great apostle, with them.

  131. Everything seemed to be going well despite opposition.

  132. Things were exciting.

  133. Things were good.

  134. And so, of course, it would make sense during that time that people would stick with Paul.

  135. That they'd want to be with him.

  136. Who wouldn't want to be with someone who wasn't such a powerful communicator?

  137. Who wasn't clearly demonstrating the power of God at work in the city of Philippi?

  138. It would make sense, right?

  139. That these people would be with him during that time.

  140. Ten years ago, they were his.

  141. He had them in his hand.

  142. And so, Paul gives thanks not because of that, but because they've still stuck with him even when he's in prison.

  143. They've stayed with him even when things weren't going well.

  144. Even when things weren't exciting.

  145. When prison bars weren't being opened anymore, the church in Philippi stuck with him.

  146. In fact, we'll find out later that they're so concerned about him that they've sent a man named Epaphroditus.

  147. And they sent him to go check in on Paul to see how he's doing.

  148. So the point is this.

  149. People come to the church for all sorts of things.

  150. Some people want to be a part of the partnership in the gospel because they want to be important.

  151. They want influence.

  152. They figured out that the church is a really good place to do that.

  153. If you know enough theology, if you have enough money, people will pay attention to you.

  154. And so it's a good place to feel like you're powerful.

  155. You have something to offer.

  156. Some people come to the church because they just want the partnership.

  157. They realize the church is a great place to meet people.

  158. It's a great place to find community.

  159. It's a great place to make friends.

  160. Some people come to the church because they love being right.

  161. And if you have a book that's inspired by God and you know it really well,

  162. it's a great place to tell other people what to believe.

  163. It's a great place to have confidence, to say things strongly.

  164. And so people come to the church for all sorts of things that have nothing really at heart to do with the gospel.

  165. All sorts of reasons people come through our doors.

  166. And so the real test comes when things are hard.

  167. If someone comes to the church for power and influence, when they're told,

  168. no, we're not going to follow your brilliant plan.

  169. No, we're not going to promote you into leadership.

  170. If that person's goal and motivation is power and influence, they're not going to stay.

  171. They're going to leave.

  172. If someone's goal in coming to the church is simply to find community,

  173. but they're there for the partnership and not the gospel,

  174. when things get hard in the culture for Christians, they're not going to stay either.

  175. When their friends that they are so close to leave the church,

  176. they may stop attending church as well.

  177. Because they were there for the partnership and not for the gospel.

  178. Some people come to church for a man.

  179. They come for a preacher.

  180. They're not interested in the partnership.

  181. They believe they're interested in the gospel.

  182. They are mesmerized by someone's speaking ability or their wit or their stories.

  183. But when that preacher leaves, so do they.

  184. And so Paul's thanksgiving, his confidence,

  185. his sureness that God is at work in this congregation

  186. is because they have done none of those things.

  187. They have stuck with him, even when he's in prison.

  188. Even when he's not performing miracles for them.

  189. He's far away from them.

  190. He's expensive to them.

  191. Epaphroditus is bringing an offering that they've made.

  192. And this is apparently not necessarily everyone in this congregation is rich,

  193. but they've all given what they can to help Paul.

  194. And so Paul sees that they have stuck with the gospel.

  195. That their partnership is real.

  196. That they've proven it.

  197. They've proven it by staying even when things were hard.

  198. And so how do we know that we have a true gospel partnership?

  199. How do we know that's the basis of our partnership?

  200. Well, one way that we know is that we stick with it when things are hard.

  201. We're committed to the partnership even when things don't go well.

  202. That we come for the gospel.

  203. Next week we're going to see that God can use anything to advance the gospel.

  204. He's going to use Paul's imprisonment.

  205. He's going to use people who are selfish within the church.

  206. He's going to use all of it for his glory.

  207. That God does not need what we want.

  208. And so as we are here at Cheyenne Mountain, you see in verse 8,

  209. Paul says,

  210. For God is my witness how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.

  211. That's the affection that we can have for one another.

  212. Because we at this church are in difficult circumstances as well.

  213. It was this Sunday, the second Sunday of September last year,

  214. that our previous senior pastor announced that he was leaving to take another call.

  215. And it was this summer that we thought we had another candidate, but we didn't.

  216. And that we discovered that we had mold in our building.

  217. But it's not just this past year.

  218. If you're familiar with the history of our church,

  219. the past 20 years, those of you who have been here know

  220. that there have been good times and bad times.

  221. There have been times that perhaps we got close to closing our doors,

  222. times we were unsure of what God was doing.

  223. And so we can say in verse 8 to each other,

  224. For God is my witness how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.

  225. Because you are still here.

  226. Those of you who have been here the past year,

  227. and those of you who have been here the past couple decades,

  228. the families who helped start this church,

  229. Ken and Nancy O'Connell,

  230. Paul and David Johnson,

  231. we can have the affection of Christ Jesus for them

  232. because they've proven their partnership in the gospel

  233. by being here not just when things are going well,

  234. but when they're going poorly.

  235. Not just when the circumstances are good,

  236. but when they're difficult.

  237. And Paul is sticking with this as well,

  238. and Paul is sticking with this even though he's in prison.

  239. And so if you're not a Christian,

  240. if you have doubts or questions or objections,

  241. I'd ask you this question.

  242. Why is it that Paul sticks with things when they're difficult?

  243. Why is he willing to stay when he's in prison?

  244. He had everything as a religious, a Jewish religious leader.

  245. He was influential.

  246. He was powerful.

  247. He's going to tell us all about that in chapter 3.

  248. And yet he gives all of it up and sits in a prison.

  249. Why is he giving up everything?

  250. Well, it's because Paul is convinced of the historical reality

  251. that Jesus died, and then he was raised again from the dead.

  252. Paul tells us in a different letter in 1 Corinthians 15

  253. that there were over 500 people who saw Jesus

  254. after he was raised from the dead,

  255. including a man, he refers to a man named Cephas,

  256. which is a reference to Peter.

  257. So Paul knows, he has tremendous confidence,

  258. not just that God is at work in this congregation,

  259. but that Jesus really did rise from the dead.

  260. And so the success of Christianity that it's had,

  261. it's not because it's a good life philosophy.

  262. The reason it's been able to make it through thick and thin

  263. is because of Jesus.

  264. Remember we talked last week that the gospel is the news

  265. about Jesus' death and his resurrection.

  266. And so we know our partnership is true

  267. when we stick through thick and thin,

  268. but we can also know that the gospel is true

  269. because we look back to people who lived

  270. when those events happened

  271. and they stuck with it through thick and thin.

  272. They suffered things that would have made no sense

  273. did they not actually believe in Jesus' death

  274. and his resurrection.

  275. And so that's the kind of power

  276. that we have with a gospel partnership.

  277. Now if you had a friend

  278. and they told you about their church,

  279. it was in this place called Philippi,

  280. and they were going through difficult circumstances.

  281. There was some fighting going on in the church.

  282. There were actually some teachers

  283. who were teaching not because they loved Christ,

  284. but because they loved themselves.

  285. They loved to hear themselves talk.

  286. And on top of that,

  287. they were in a culture that didn't like them.

  288. What would be your number one prayer request for them?

  289. What would you pray for for them

  290. more than anything else?

  291. What does Paul choose to pray for

  292. more than anything else?

  293. For people who are trying to have partnership in the gospel.

  294. Did you see verse nine?

  295. And it is my prayer

  296. that your love may abound more and more

  297. with knowledge and all discernment,

  298. so that you may approve what is excellent

  299. and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

  300. filled with the fruit of righteousness

  301. that comes through Jesus Christ

  302. to the glory and praise of God.

  303. Paul does not pray for a change in their circumstances.

  304. Paul doesn't pray that the Roman government

  305. would suddenly have favor on them.

  306. And Paul doesn't immediately pray

  307. for the resolution of all their problems.

  308. No, instead he prays that their love

  309. would abound more and more.

  310. That it's something that's there,

  311. but it's also something that's growing.

  312. And he speaks about it as fruit in verse 11.

  313. Now, my housemates and I

  314. made a decision this past summer

  315. that we were going to

  316. plant a little garden in our backyard,

  317. and we haven't been the best garden caretakers,

  318. so I'm not sure if it was a great idea.

  319. But I bought several mint plants,

  320. and I made a mistake,

  321. so I bought,

  322. this is my advice to you,

  323. my pastoral advice,

  324. don't buy your mint plants

  325. from a grocery store.

  326. Buy them from a place

  327. that actually specializes in plants.

  328. So I bought several mint plants,

  329. and most of them died except for one.

  330. But the one that didn't die,

  331. if you know anything about mint plants,

  332. you know that they abound more and more.

  333. Because they're a weed.

  334. I mean, it's a weed that you eat.

  335. So this mint plant has just been growing and growing

  336. all summer.

  337. When I see it,

  338. there's more and more fruit on it.

  339. I haven't taken advantage of all of that,

  340. but that is the idea here that Paul has,

  341. that this love is just growing.

  342. It's love that's already there,

  343. so he's not saying you need to

  344. do something that's not there,

  345. but he wants it to be more and more.

  346. This goes back to his vision

  347. of the Christian life from verse 6,

  348. that God who began a good work

  349. will bring it to completion.

  350. That the good things that are at work

  351. in this congregation will grow more and more.

  352. But this also raises a question for us,

  353. because what in the world does Paul mean by love?

  354. There are all sorts of definitions

  355. for love in our world right now.

  356. For some people,

  357. I might say I really love pizza.

  358. It could be I enjoy something.

  359. For other people,

  360. love means not questioning

  361. someone else's choices in their life.

  362. No matter what they do,

  363. you approve of it because you love them.

  364. For some people,

  365. love is an emotion.

  366. So what is it here

  367. that's supposed to abound more and more?

  368. What is Paul's definition of love?

  369. I'm going to jump around a little bit here

  370. between verses 9 and 11,

  371. but we're going to cover it all.

  372. Let's look first at the result.

  373. The result of this love

  374. is that it would be pure,

  375. they would be pure and blameless

  376. for the day of Christ.

  377. So whatever this love is,

  378. it has to result in being pure and blameless.

  379. Now, we might think here

  380. that Paul is talking about perfection,

  381. that these people are somehow

  382. going to reach perfection in this life.

  383. That is not what he's saying.

  384. We'll see that later in chapter 3.

  385. He'll make it clear

  386. that he has not reached perfection.

  387. He doesn't think he's going to ever become perfect,

  388. but he's working towards

  389. the goal of growing,

  390. of abounding more and more.

  391. These words here,

  392. they're less,

  393. they're not the legal words

  394. that we would expect

  395. in other parts of Paul's letters.

  396. These are more relational words.

  397. And so this word pure,

  398. one way we could translate it

  399. is sincere.

  400. Paul's going to speak

  401. in the next chapter

  402. about people who are not sincere.

  403. They're preaching the gospel,

  404. actually in the next section,

  405. they're preaching the gospel

  406. because they're selfish,

  407. not because they're interested in Christ.

  408. And so the purity here

  409. is a purity in motive.

  410. That you,

  411. in what you do,

  412. would be interested in other people,

  413. not yourself.

  414. Remember,

  415. he's writing this to a church

  416. that has division.

  417. That you would be interested,

  418. that your motives would be pure,

  419. you'd be sincere in what you're doing.

  420. And blameless here,

  421. we could take it as

  422. not causing other people to stumble.

  423. In other words,

  424. if there's been a conflict,

  425. we're able to say,

  426. that person had no part in it.

  427. They didn't contribute to the conflict.

  428. Parents, you know this,

  429. if you have two children come to you

  430. and one's complaining about the other,

  431. often your first move is to ask,

  432. well, what part did you play in it?

  433. There's usually no one

  434. who's blameless in these sorts of things.

  435. There's usually no one who's pure.

  436. I got to see this a lot

  437. when I was teaching.

  438. You know, students would,

  439. Colin's laughing.

  440. Students will come and complain

  441. about another student

  442. and you'll quickly find out

  443. that they're not telling you

  444. the whole story.

  445. Oh, they hit you

  446. after you kicked them in the leg.

  447. Okay, I got it.

  448. And so Paul is speaking about a love.

  449. Not an emotion primarily,

  450. but a selflessness.

  451. He's asking these people

  452. to grow as they're with one another

  453. in a congregation,

  454. that they grow in their selflessness,

  455. that they would be pure,

  456. that their greatest desire

  457. would be for other people's good,

  458. and that they would be blameless,

  459. that nothing they would do

  460. would cause other people to stumble,

  461. that they would not be

  462. the cause of division.

  463. And how are they going to do this?

  464. Well, this is a specific kind of love.

  465. It's love with knowledge

  466. and all discernment,

  467. so that you may approve

  468. what is excellent.

  469. This knowledge here

  470. is knowing the right way

  471. and then the discernment

  472. is being able to act on it.

  473. And so this love

  474. is something that's informed

  475. by their knowledge of the gospel.

  476. As they prioritize the gospel,

  477. as they understand the gospel

  478. and what it means for their lives,

  479. they realize that the example of Christ

  480. is their example as well.

  481. And so they can continue

  482. in this partnership

  483. because they don't always

  484. have to be right.

  485. and they don't always

  486. have to be in power and control.

  487. That they're willing

  488. to be in this church

  489. that's not their perfect church

  490. and still work

  491. with the other people

  492. beside them for the gospel.

  493. They're willing

  494. to keep pushing forward.

  495. I've made jokes

  496. with a few of you

  497. a few times

  498. about a church,

  499. and this church is called

  500. Matthew Presbyterian Church.

  501. And at this church,

  502. everything is done

  503. exactly the way

  504. I would like it to be done.

  505. All my preferences are met.

  506. All my convictions

  507. about small things

  508. that aren't important,

  509. those are met to a T.

  510. Matthew Presbyterian Church

  511. is a really great place.

  512. And it would also be

  513. a really terrible place

  514. because all of my

  515. personality flaws,

  516. all of my weaknesses,

  517. all of my sin patterns

  518. would be amplified

  519. throughout that entire church.

  520. church.

  521. And you know,

  522. I've been to

  523. a lot of churches

  524. in my life,

  525. I've grown up in the church,

  526. and I've never,

  527. I've never actually

  528. found a church

  529. that's Matthew Presbyterian Church.

  530. I don't understand.

  531. But I would imagine

  532. for many of us

  533. that all of us

  534. have a perfect church

  535. in our minds.

  536. a church where

  537. everything's done

  538. exactly the way

  539. we want it to.

  540. And what Paul

  541. is telling us here

  542. is that we push

  543. not for our preferences,

  544. but we push together

  545. for the gospel.

  546. That we would be

  547. pure and blameless.

  548. That we would be able

  549. to know what is

  550. actually important.

  551. That's the knowledge

  552. and discernment here.

  553. We would approve

  554. what's excellent.

  555. That as we work together

  556. for the gospel,

  557. we'd be able to figure out

  558. what matters

  559. and what doesn't.

  560. what we need to fight over

  561. and what we don't need

  562. to fight over.

  563. By the way,

  564. Paul is certainly

  565. willing to fight.

  566. In chapter 3,

  567. he's going to refer

  568. to certain people

  569. as dogs and mutilators.

  570. So if you think

  571. that Paul is unafraid

  572. of conflict,

  573. that's certainly not true.

  574. And if you think

  575. he's not willing

  576. to draw lines

  577. over certain things,

  578. that's not true as well.

  579. He's going to start

  580. throwing some names

  581. around in chapter 3.

  582. But he's saying here,

  583. as you're moving

  584. forward together,

  585. as you love one another,

  586. you would know

  587. what's important,

  588. what matters.

  589. You would put it all

  590. in light of the gospel,

  591. in light of Jesus' death

  592. and his resurrection,

  593. but also in light

  594. of the good work

  595. that he's doing.

  596. So that verse 11,

  597. you would be filled

  598. with the fruit

  599. of righteousness

  600. that comes through

  601. Jesus Christ

  602. to the glory

  603. and praise of God.

  604. So that they would be

  605. these plants

  606. that are growing

  607. and abounding

  608. more and more.

  609. so that they would

  610. stand on the day

  611. of Christ.

  612. Remember,

  613. we talked about last week

  614. that the day of Christ

  615. is the day of Jesus'

  616. second coming,

  617. the day that he's going

  618. to come with judgment

  619. on the world.

  620. His first judgment

  621. focused on salvation,

  622. his first coming

  623. focused on salvation

  624. but included judgment.

  625. His second coming

  626. will focus on judgment

  627. but include salvation.

  628. salvation.

  629. And so,

  630. these saints,

  631. these saints

  632. and elders

  633. and deacons

  634. are all in

  635. God's garden.

  636. And if they're

  637. in God's garden,

  638. they're producing

  639. fruit together,

  640. the kind of fruit

  641. that he brings.

  642. And that's how Paul

  643. knows that there's

  644. so much confidence.

  645. That's how he has

  646. this sureness,

  647. this joy,

  648. and this thanksgiving.

  649. And so,

  650. how do we know

  651. that we have

  652. a true gospel partnership?

  653. First,

  654. we saw that we know

  655. we have a true

  656. gospel partnership

  657. if we stick through

  658. things in thick and thin

  659. and the hard

  660. and the good times.

  661. But we also know

  662. we have a true

  663. gospel partnership

  664. if there's the fruit

  665. of righteousness.

  666. If we see that

  667. we are abounding

  668. in love more and more.

  669. Remember,

  670. I asked you last week,

  671. I said we could

  672. ask you how you

  673. became a Christian

  674. but we could also

  675. ask you how you

  676. are becoming a Christian.

  677. How is God

  678. not just bringing

  679. theological truths

  680. into your mind

  681. but combining it

  682. with knowledge

  683. and discernment

  684. that you're approving

  685. what's excellent?

  686. That you would have

  687. love, joy, peace,

  688. patience, goodness,

  689. kindness, faithfulness,

  690. gentleness,

  691. and self-control.

  692. And so,

  693. we know that we're

  694. a true partnership

  695. as we see those things

  696. springing up

  697. in our church.

  698. As we see those things

  699. springing up

  700. in our lives.

  701. And so,

  702. we should be asking,

  703. how am I different

  704. than when I became

  705. a Christian?

  706. how have I changed?

  707. Maybe it's I,

  708. I used to be

  709. angry,

  710. but now I lose

  711. my temper less.

  712. It used to be

  713. that I hoarded money,

  714. that my security

  715. is more important

  716. than anything else,

  717. but now I realize

  718. that God

  719. is in charge

  720. of my life

  721. and so I can be

  722. generous with those

  723. around me.

  724. Whatever it is,

  725. we should be able

  726. to look back

  727. on our lives

  728. and see God at work

  729. bearing fruit.

  730. If you're not

  731. a Christian,

  732. how do we know

  733. the gospel is true?

  734. Well,

  735. I hope that as you

  736. get to know us,

  737. as you see us

  738. in our lives,

  739. not that you would

  740. see perfect people,

  741. but that you would

  742. see people who have

  743. the fruit of righteousness,

  744. you wouldn't see

  745. people who always

  746. get it right,

  747. but that you'd see

  748. people who are growing.

  749. And so if you're

  750. a Christian,

  751. ask yourself,

  752. how am I growing?

  753. If you're not a Christian,

  754. you should feel free

  755. to ask any one of us,

  756. how have you changed

  757. since you became

  758. a Christian?

  759. How are you

  760. changing now?

  761. Where do you see

  762. the fruit of righteousness

  763. in your life?

  764. Now this fruit

  765. isn't something

  766. that we ourselves

  767. generate or make,

  768. we see that it is

  769. through Jesus Christ

  770. in verse 11.

  771. I told you that we've

  772. been planting a garden

  773. in my backyard

  774. and we have this

  775. diagram,

  776. this map

  777. on our refrigerator

  778. that my housemate

  779. Rory drew

  780. and it shows

  781. where each plant

  782. is in the garden

  783. so we can remember

  784. where we planted things.

  785. But we don't really

  786. need that map

  787. anymore

  788. because all the fruit

  789. has come out.

  790. I know whether

  791. the mint plant

  792. is a mint plant,

  793. whether the diagram

  794. says it or not

  795. because it has mint leaves.

  796. All I have to do

  797. is break them

  798. and smell them.

  799. And I know

  800. whether the tomato plant

  801. is a tomato plant

  802. because it has

  803. tomatoes on it.

  804. And so our partnership

  805. is true

  806. when the fruit

  807. is produced

  808. and yet it's not,

  809. it's not something

  810. the plant

  811. makes itself.

  812. That mint plant

  813. produces mint leaves

  814. because it's a mint plant.

  815. And if it didn't

  816. it's because it isn't.

  817. But it doesn't

  818. water itself.

  819. Rory put in

  820. this irrigation system,

  821. kind of an entry level

  822. irrigation system

  823. but it's one of those

  824. under the mulch

  825. kind of hose tubes

  826. that you put in.

  827. And so he turns

  828. on the water

  829. and makes sure

  830. the plants get

  831. what they need.

  832. And the son

  833. comes and gives them

  834. the energy

  835. that they need.

  836. And that is my prayer

  837. for us every week

  838. as I prepare to preach.

  839. That God would send

  840. his Holy Spirit

  841. on us

  842. to give us growth.

  843. Because it's not growth

  844. that we can do ourselves.

  845. It's not something

  846. we generate it

  847. but it's something

  848. that he does.

  849. So our partnership

  850. is true

  851. when we stick

  852. through the thick and thin

  853. and it's true

  854. when we produce

  855. the fruit.

  856. And it's fruit

  857. that God is producing.

  858. He is the great gardener.

  859. He's tending his plants

  860. and if we're in his garden

  861. we'll see that growth.

  862. We'll see it coming

  863. and we'll see it

  864. as we're working together.

  865. And so last week

  866. we saw that we're

  867. in partnership

  868. because we are pursuing

  869. the treasure

  870. of the gospel together.

  871. That we're willing

  872. to put up with differences

  873. because we all agree

  874. that that is the most

  875. worthy thing.

  876. But here it's a little

  877. bit different.

  878. It's not

  879. it's a different angle.

  880. We are

  881. in partnership together

  882. growing fruit together.

  883. We're not just pursuing

  884. the same goal

  885. in the end

  886. but we're pursuing

  887. fruit together now

  888. as we work

  889. as a church

  890. as a partnership.

  891. filled with the fruit

  892. of righteousness

  893. that comes through

  894. Jesus Christ

  895. to the glory

  896. and praise of God.

  897. And so it's God

  898. who is gardening

  899. and feeding

  900. and bringing out

  901. this fruit in his people

  902. in his garden.

  903. And that

  904. is not what earns

  905. our salvation

  906. but it's the fruit.

  907. It shows that we belong

  908. to God.

  909. That Christians

  910. produce fruit

  911. just like mint plants

  912. produce mint leaves.

  913. because they're weeds

  914. and that's what they do

  915. when there's water

  916. and sun.

  917. And God's people

  918. produce fruit

  919. when they're in

  920. his people

  921. in his partnership

  922. receiving

  923. the food

  924. of his word

  925. working together

  926. their love

  927. abounding more

  928. and more.

  929. I read an article

  930. this spring

  931. there's been some

  932. research

  933. that's shown

  934. what people suspected

  935. for a long time.

  936. And some people

  937. who suspected

  938. suspected this

  939. others thought

  940. they were crazy

  941. but now there's proof.

  942. And it's proof

  943. of the fact

  944. that plants

  945. actually talk

  946. to each other.

  947. So it's been proven

  948. that plants

  949. can communicate

  950. with each other

  951. not just mechanically

  952. not just when their

  953. leaves touch each other

  954. we all know

  955. they're climbing plants

  956. right

  957. they can feel

  958. the environment

  959. around them

  960. but they're actually

  961. secretions

  962. that they give out

  963. sometimes through

  964. their roots

  965. to let each other

  966. know how close

  967. they are to each other

  968. so that they can

  969. adjust accordingly

  970. whether they're

  971. going to grow high

  972. to get more sun

  973. based on the plants

  974. around them

  975. or they'll grow out

  976. plants have to make

  977. these sorts of decisions

  978. to produce fruit

  979. and they're all

  980. helping each other

  981. they're sending out

  982. signals to let each

  983. other know

  984. how close they are

  985. so they can make

  986. the right decision

  987. to grow the right

  988. amount of fruit

  989. and even more

  990. than that

  991. they'll actually

  992. communicate with each

  993. other about predators

  994. you can search this

  995. on Google

  996. if there's a

  997. predatory insect

  998. that's coming

  999. at one plant

  1000. that plant will

  1001. send out signals

  1002. to all the other

  1003. plants to let them

  1004. know

  1005. that there's a

  1006. danger coming

  1007. and so if we're

  1008. tempted to believe

  1009. that we are

  1010. isolated Christians

  1011. growing our own

  1012. fruit just between

  1013. us and God

  1014. Paul is telling us

  1015. here no

  1016. that our fruit

  1017. is something that

  1018. abounds more and

  1019. more as we're

  1020. together in God's

  1021. garden

  1022. that we are plants

  1023. helping each other

  1024. communicating with

  1025. each other and

  1026. growing together

  1027. each for the other

  1028. giving each other

  1029. the information and

  1030. the help that we

  1031. need that we can

  1032. all grow

  1033. that we can all

  1034. bear fruit and so

  1035. that we can all

  1036. stand for the day

  1037. of Christ

  1038. and God is doing

  1039. that now

  1040. he's doing that

  1041. for all of his

  1042. children who are

  1043. in the partnership

  1044. of his gospel

  1045. everyone

  1046. who is here

  1047. following after

  1048. them

  1049. he's watering us

  1050. he's providing us

  1051. with sun

  1052. so that we can

  1053. grow

  1054. and he's doing

  1055. it with us

  1056. together because

  1057. he is the great

  1058. gardener

  1059. so would you pray

  1060. with me

  1061. dear father in

  1062. heaven

  1063. we thank you for

  1064. planting us in this

  1065. garden and this

  1066. church

  1067. we thank you that

  1068. you're the one who

  1069. produces the fruit

  1070. and the growth

  1071. we ask that you

  1072. would encourage us

  1073. with it

  1074. that you would

  1075. continue to sustain

  1076. us

  1077. not just in the

  1078. good times

  1079. but in the bad

  1080. times

  1081. and that you

  1082. would continue

  1083. to grow us

  1084. more and more

  1085. in love

  1086. for you

  1087. and for one

  1088. another

  1089. we ask all

  1090. these things

  1091. in the name

  1092. of your son

  1093. amen
