  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Gapone, and I'm the assistant pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you.

  4. A special welcome if you are new with us, you're visiting with us.

  5. We're glad you're here.

  6. And we're glad you're here, as I say every week, not because you are filling a seat,

  7. but because we are following Jesus together here as one community.

  8. And we're convinced that there's no one so good that they don't need God's grace,

  9. and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  10. And so God has something to say to everyone in his word.

  11. He has something to say to those of us who might say we've been Christians our entire lives.

  12. He has something to say to those of us who might say that we're not Christians,

  13. that we have questions or doubts or objections to Christianity.

  14. But God's word is powerful enough and good enough that he's willing to speak to us wherever we're at.

  15. If you remember, we are looking at the book of Philippians, and the book of Philippians is a letter.

  16. It's a letter that's written to a church that's very much like our church.

  17. That church is in a city very much like our city.

  18. Remember, we've been talking about the fact that this is a military city.

  19. It has a military history.

  20. It has special privileges in the province of Macedonia.

  21. And so people who are citizens, people who have served with Rome are given special privileges, special benefits.

  22. They have reduced taxes.

  23. They take pride in the fact that they belong to the Roman Empire.

  24. And so in a world that, in a city that takes pride in its Roman citizenship,

  25. we saw last week that Paul encourages his readers instead to take pride in their citizenship in the city of heaven,

  26. that they belong to God.

  27. And this is a book overall in the big picture about partnership in the gospel.

  28. So it's about our partnership together, that we are working side by side,

  29. that we have the same goal.

  30. We're seeking the same treasure together.

  31. And it's also about the gospel, that our treasure is the news about Jesus.

  32. It's the story of his life, but also the announcement, the news,

  33. that his life and his death and his resurrection did what we could not do.

  34. It took the punishment that we deserve for our sins and gave us the righteousness that Christ earned through his obedience.

  35. And so we're both working together and we're with the gospel,

  36. that we can't take those things and separate them.

  37. Last week we asked the question of how we can stand together,

  38. how we can have a partnership in the gospel together when we face opposition.

  39. And we saw that we can either go on a mission with each other or we can go on a mission against each other.

  40. That those are our two options.

  41. And Paul encourages and exhorts the people in Philippi to strive side by side for the gospel.

  42. That they have to pursue unity together and with one another.

  43. And so last week we saw the why.

  44. We saw that God builds us up, he confirms our faith and that we belong to him when we stand together.

  45. And this week we're going to see the how.

  46. How is it that we're able to strive side by side?

  47. It is one thing to join a church and another to get along with the people in it.

  48. It's one thing to take vows for better or for worse.

  49. And another to figure out how to actually live with your spouse.

  50. It's one thing to be excited about the school year that just started.

  51. And another to actually get along with the classmates around you.

  52. It's one thing to talk about people from both sides of the aisle listening to each other.

  53. And it's another thing to do it.

  54. And so our big question is this.

  55. How do we actually work together?

  56. What is it that we actually do?

  57. Because we know that it's easy to say and hard to do.

  58. It's something that we wish for.

  59. We know that there's few things in this life more satisfying than working with a team, with a group, towards a common goal.

  60. And yet if we've lived in this life for more than a few minutes, we know that there's also nothing that's more difficult.

  61. And so Paul is going to address that very thing in his letter to the Philippians today.

  62. We're in Philippians chapter 2, starting at the very beginning.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  63. We're going to start in verse 1.

  64. And remember that this letter is God's word.

  65. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  66. And that it is sweeter than honey.

  67. Even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  68. And so we're going to read it starting in verse 1 of chapter 2.

  69. Please read with me.

  70. So, if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,

  71. complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

  72. Verse 3.

  73. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit.

  74. But in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

  75. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

  76. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

  77. who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.

  78. Verse 7.

  79. But emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

  80. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

  81. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name.

  82. Verse 10.

  83. So that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

  84. And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

  85. Please pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  86. Dear Father in heaven,

  87. we confess as we read your word

  88. that it's impossible for us to hear from you unless you speak.

  89. And even if you speak, it's impossible for us to understand unless you send your spirit to work in our minds and our hearts.

  90. And so we ask simply that this morning, that you would send your Holy Spirit to us.

  91. That you would take what's dead in us and make it alive.

  92. That you would take what we can't understand and make it clear.

  93. And most of all, that you would take a spotlight and that you would put it on Jesus Christ

  94. so that we could see him for who he is.

  95. And we would respond to that.

  96. We ask all these things in the name of your son.

  97. Amen.

  98. Paul begins this section essentially by asking a question.

  99. Have you experienced anything good from the gospel?

  100. Verse 1, is there any encouragement in Christ?

  101. Do you take any encouragement from the fact that

  102. Jesus' death has paid for your sins and his life is credited to you?

  103. Does the gospel mean anything to you?

  104. But remember, this isn't just about the gospel.

  105. It's about the partnership.

  106. And so we also ask, does the partnership mean anything to you?

  107. Do you have any comfort from love?

  108. Any participation in the spirit?

  109. In other words, have you experienced even the smallest benefit from partnership in the gospel?

  110. Have you been able to catch the smallest glimpse, to see the smallest part of it, just a sliver of light?

  111. Have you been able to see even only a little bit?

  112. Have you been able to experience the love that comes from being part of this partnership?

  113. Has it affected you in any way?

  114. Has it piqued your curiosity in any way?

  115. If it has touched you in anything, in any part of your life,

  116. if you've been a part of this community,

  117. then he asks them to make it even more.

  118. Because he's appealing not just to their relationship with God,

  119. but also to their relationship with him and with others.

  120. Because in Paul's mind, this partnership is so important.

  121. And so that's why he says in verse 2,

  122. to complete my joy.

  123. Not only have you experienced something from your relationship with Christ,

  124. but have you experienced something with your relationship with me, Paul?

  125. He's appealing to the fact that he knows this church personally.

  126. It was 10 years ago that he was with them,

  127. and he was in prison for the sake of the gospel.

  128. And so he appeals to them like a father to his children.

  129. Have you experienced anything good in this family?

  130. Has it been a blessing to you?

  131. Do you want to stay in?

  132. Do you call yourself a Christian?

  133. Well, then you just have one choice.

  134. Have the same love.

  135. Be in full accord and of one mind.

  136. Verse 3.

  137. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit,

  138. but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

  139. And it's in verse 3 that we begin to see the answer to our question.

  140. How is it that we can actually work together?

  141. What is it that we actually do that allows us to strive side by side?

  142. And Paul gives us a simple answer.

  143. It's humility.

  144. Now, we could leave it there,

  145. but we wouldn't have any definition of humility.

  146. Thankfully, Paul's a precise thinker.

  147. He's a precise writer.

  148. And so he doesn't leave us to wonder what this kind of humility is.

  149. He's very clear.

  150. Humility here is the opposite of selfish ambition or conceit.

  151. And so we can do one of two things.

  152. We can either pursue things that make us look good or feel good,

  153. or we can pursue things that make other people,

  154. that go after other people's interests.

  155. We can either do things that make people look,

  156. ourselves look good or feel good.

  157. That's the conceit or the pride.

  158. Or we can focus on what's good for others.

  159. That's the first part of humility that he gives us,

  160. but that's not the end of it.

  161. Verse 4, he says,

  162. Now, I'm not going to take credit for this definition.

  163. I'm not sure where it comes from,

  164. but it's a common definition of humility,

  165. and it's simply this.

  166. Humility is not thinking less of yourself,

  167. but thinking of yourself less.

  168. It's not thinking less of yourself,

  169. but thinking of yourself less.

  170. In other words, the focus of your mind,

  171. the focus of your energy and your thoughts is on other people.

  172. It's on their needs.

  173. It's on their concerns,

  174. rather than on what makes you look good and feel good.

  175. That is Paul's answer here to how this partnership is going to work.

  176. What is going to have to happen

  177. if these Christians in Philippi

  178. are going to be able to achieve what we talked about last week?

  179. If they're going to be able to actually continue striving side by side

  180. for the sake of the gospel?

  181. If they're going to have any humility,

  182. any partnership, any unity,

  183. then the answer is humility.

  184. Now, don't hear what I'm not saying here.

  185. Paul is not saying that you should allow people to abuse you.

  186. He is not saying that you should live as a doormat.

  187. Remember, he's writing to a church that's in the middle of conflict.

  188. We are going to find out in chapter 4

  189. that there are people in the church

  190. that cannot figure out how to get along.

  191. And so he's saying in the middle of conflict,

  192. the answer is to figure out what other people need.

  193. And so in verse 4,

  194. I wish this word were even stronger.

  195. Let each of you look.

  196. We could say maybe look into.

  197. But a better word for this might be research.

  198. That this looking is an inquiring,

  199. it's an asking,

  200. it's a questioning.

  201. It's going and trying to figure out

  202. what other people need.

  203. And so it looks something like this.

  204. It looks like

  205. young families

  206. trying to figure out

  207. what is it that our widows in the church need.

  208. It's widows in the church

  209. being concerned,

  210. first and foremost,

  211. what do young single people in the church need?

  212. What are their concerns?

  213. What are their interests?

  214. People who were born in the U.S.,

  215. they make their primary concern

  216. trying to figure out

  217. what are the needs and the interests

  218. of people who are not born in the U.S.

  219. It's husbands who are making it their job

  220. to research and look into

  221. what are the needs and concerns

  222. of my wife and my children.

  223. That is my primary concern.

  224. And so there's a question challenge here for us.

  225. Because Paul is saying

  226. that the answer

  227. to our disunity in the church,

  228. our answer to conflict,

  229. is to become researchers.

  230. To become researchers

  231. about other people in the church.

  232. Our conflict in the situations

  233. that we find ourselves in,

  234. if we're not able to reach unity,

  235. this is his initial answer.

  236. And so when he says in verse 2,

  237. be of the same mind,

  238. having the same love,

  239. he does not mean

  240. that everyone in the church

  241. has to agree about everything.

  242. He's not saying

  243. that we're going to have a church meeting

  244. and at this church meeting

  245. we're going to write down

  246. ten questions of opinions

  247. and preferences.

  248. And at the end of the meeting

  249. all of us have to leave

  250. believing the same thing.

  251. Because the problem here

  252. is that not that people in the church

  253. believe different things,

  254. but that they can't get along

  255. with each other.

  256. They don't know how to work together.

  257. I had an acquaintance

  258. in college

  259. and I didn't know him very well,

  260. but at one point

  261. he came up in a conversation

  262. with someone else

  263. and I said,

  264. oh, do you know so-and-so?

  265. I don't even remember

  266. what we were talking about,

  267. but this person's answer

  268. has stuck with me

  269. ever since then

  270. for the last probably

  271. ten years or so.

  272. He said,

  273. yes,

  274. I know so-and-so.

  275. Let's say his name is John.

  276. His name's not John,

  277. but let's say his name is John.

  278. I know John.

  279. And then he sat and thought

  280. for a second

  281. and he said,

  282. John,

  283. John has a lot of answers,

  284. but he doesn't have any questions.

  285. He has a lot of answers,

  286. but he doesn't have any questions.

  287. And I thought about that for a second

  288. and I thought,

  289. yeah, that's true.

  290. I've interacted with John.

  291. John does have a lot of answers.

  292. For a 19-year-old,

  293. he knows a lot about the world.

  294. He knows more than the rest of us do,

  295. but I don't think I've ever heard him

  296. ask a question.

  297. What we see here in Philippians 2

  298. is that if we want to have unity

  299. in the church,

  300. we have to be question people,

  301. not answer people.

  302. We have to be question people,

  303. not answer people.

  304. And question people specifically

  305. about the needs and concerns

  306. of other people.

  307. You know, everyone has a list.

  308. Everyone has a list,

  309. whether it's in their marriage,

  310. whether it's in the church,

  311. whether it's in your job,

  312. whether it's in your friend group.

  313. Everyone has a list of things

  314. that would make,

  315. that need to change

  316. and would make life better for them.

  317. And so my challenge for us is this.

  318. What would it look like

  319. to have a list of things

  320. that would make things better

  321. for other people?

  322. And would cause us to lose something?

  323. What would it be like for us

  324. to have a list of things

  325. that would make a situation

  326. better for other people,

  327. but it would cause us

  328. to lose something?

  329. Now, we're going to have a chance

  330. to practice this a little bit

  331. in a few weeks.

  332. So you heard this morning

  333. from Mark

  334. that we're going to have a survey

  335. about what time

  336. the church should meet.

  337. Now, this is a simple thing.

  338. This is probably the simplest

  339. of things we could talk about.

  340. This doesn't involve

  341. our theological convictions,

  342. hopefully.

  343. But it involves our preferences,

  344. and I'm just going to say it.

  345. Someone's going to lose.

  346. If the time doesn't change

  347. and you wanted it to change,

  348. then you're going to lose.

  349. If you wanted the time

  350. to say the same

  351. and it changes,

  352. whatever happens,

  353. someone's not going

  354. to get their preference.

  355. And so we're seeking

  356. as deacons and elders

  357. to try to do

  358. what's going to be good

  359. for our whole community.

  360. And so if what happens

  361. is not your preference,

  362. if you're anything like me,

  363. if you're a normal human being

  364. in this world,

  365. you're probably going to say,

  366. you know,

  367. man, I wish it had been different.

  368. I wish it had been

  369. what I had voted for.

  370. Don't they understand

  371. that I have young kids?

  372. Or don't they understand

  373. that I wake up

  374. at 6 a.m. every morning

  375. and I have to wait

  376. three hours for service

  377. to start

  378. and now I have to wait four.

  379. But the response here,

  380. if we're listening to Paul,

  381. our response would be this,

  382. if we lose.

  383. Someone in the church

  384. must have really needed

  385. our time to change.

  386. And I'm glad we're doing

  387. what's in the interest

  388. of other people.

  389. I'm going to lose something,

  390. but I'm willing to do it.

  391. I'm willing to do it

  392. for the sake of our community.

  393. I'm willing to do it.

  394. Now, I don't mean to be trite

  395. in giving you that example.

  396. I'll say that is probably

  397. the least of things

  398. we could worry about.

  399. So if we can't pass that test

  400. as a church,

  401. we're in trouble.

  402. I'm confident that we'll pass it.

  403. I have a preference

  404. about which time

  405. we're going to change to

  406. or not change to.

  407. I'm not going to tell you.

  408. So then you can't hold me

  409. accountable

  410. if it doesn't go my way.

  411. But that's what Paul

  412. is telling us here.

  413. Be questioned people,

  414. not answer people.

  415. Be looking to the needs

  416. of other people.

  417. Be researchers.

  418. When you see that word,

  419. look in verse four,

  420. I want you to think,

  421. let each of you research

  422. not just his own interests,

  423. but really research

  424. the interests of other people.

  425. Don't be brainstorming answers,

  426. but be brainstorming questions.

  427. Think about what you don't know

  428. about other people

  429. in this situation.

  430. So our first question

  431. then to our,

  432. our first answer

  433. to our question is this.

  434. How do we have unity?

  435. How do we work together?

  436. We promote the good

  437. of other people

  438. even when it costs us.

  439. So we're not just researchers,

  440. we take action.

  441. We figure out

  442. the needs of other people.

  443. We're willing to put those needs

  444. above the needs of our own.

  445. We're willing to act.

  446. We're willing to lose.

  447. We're willing to lose something

  448. for the sake of others.

  449. And so when Paul tells the church

  450. to be of one mind,

  451. again, he doesn't mean

  452. you have to agree

  453. about everything except this.

  454. Agree that you're all

  455. going to have the one mind

  456. of pursuing what's best

  457. for other people.

  458. And when you do that,

  459. unity will not be

  460. a problem for you anymore.

  461. You might have disagreements.

  462. You might have friendly debates.

  463. But you won't have disunity.

  464. You won't have people

  465. fighting in factions.

  466. Instead, you'll have people

  467. fighting over

  468. how they can help other people,

  469. how they can promote

  470. other people and lift them up.

  471. Now this isn't some,

  472. just some trite

  473. self-help advice.

  474. It's more than that.

  475. It's actually impossible.

  476. So Paul asks us

  477. to do something

  478. that we are incapable

  479. of doing.

  480. If you were to run

  481. into some kind of strategy

  482. like this in a leadership book,

  483. it would ultimately

  484. be manipulative.

  485. Look out for the interests

  486. of others so that you can

  487. build their trust

  488. and then push your agenda

  489. through.

  490. But Paul's not saying that.

  491. Paul's saying,

  492. no, you're actually

  493. going to lose.

  494. This is not some

  495. leadership strategy

  496. that was published

  497. in the Harvard Business Review

  498. for people to figure out

  499. how to make their agendas

  500. happen faster.

  501. This is actually

  502. losing your agenda.

  503. It's completely dying.

  504. And so how are we going

  505. to do what is impossible,

  506. what we do not have

  507. the resources

  508. to accomplish?

  509. Well, Paul tells us

  510. that we do.

  511. We have the resources

  512. but only if we are in Christ.

  513. You see in verse 5,

  514. he says,

  515. have this mind

  516. among yourselves

  517. which is yours

  518. in Christ Jesus.

  519. In other words,

  520. the only way

  521. you are going to be able

  522. to do this

  523. is if you belong to Jesus

  524. and his spirit

  525. is at work in you.

  526. That's why he talked earlier

  527. about participation

  528. in the spirit

  529. in verse 1

  530. because that's the prerequisite

  531. for anything to happen.

  532. Anything of spiritual value

  533. or worth.

  534. That's how,

  535. remember we talked about

  536. we're one garden

  537. growing together.

  538. That's how the garden grows.

  539. It's because there is

  540. a great gardener.

  541. And then he goes on

  542. to tell us

  543. why this is ours

  544. in Christ Jesus.

  545. Because who,

  546. though he was

  547. in the form of God,

  548. did not count equality

  549. with a God

  550. a thing to be grasped

  551. but emptied himself

  552. by taking the form

  553. of a servant

  554. being born in the likeness

  555. of men

  556. and being found

  557. in human form

  558. he humbled himself

  559. by becoming obedient

  560. to the point of death

  561. even death

  562. on a cross.

  563. In other words,

  564. there is no one

  565. in the history

  566. of the world

  567. who has lost

  568. more than Jesus lost.

  569. There's no one

  570. in the history

  571. of the world

  572. who's lost

  573. more than Jesus lost

  574. and there is no one

  575. who is willing

  576. to lose more

  577. for the sake of others.

  578. Jesus didn't hang

  579. on to his personal

  580. interests.

  581. He didn't hang

  582. on to what was

  583. good for him.

  584. He gave up

  585. all the privileges

  586. that he had

  587. in heaven.

  588. And not only that,

  589. he took on

  590. the body

  591. of a human being

  592. with all its

  593. frailties,

  594. with all its

  595. inabilities,

  596. all its limitations.

  597. That he didn't just

  598. lose everything

  599. that he had

  600. but he took on

  601. something that would

  602. cause him to have

  603. tremendous suffering.

  604. And yet he was

  605. still God

  606. in the midst of it.

  607. He took off

  608. everything that

  609. would give him

  610. stature or power

  611. or status

  612. and took on

  613. the form

  614. of a human being.

  615. Now this passage

  616. here is primarily

  617. it's about church unity

  618. but it's become

  619. a point of debate

  620. in the church

  621. about the relationship

  622. between Christ's

  623. human nature

  624. and his divine nature.

  625. And so I'm going

  626. to tell you a story.

  627. The story is not

  628. my own.

  629. It's a famous story

  630. among preachers

  631. to explain this concept

  632. so I take no credit

  633. for it.

  634. But the story

  635. is about

  636. a tribe in Africa.

  637. And this tribe

  638. in Africa

  639. had a deep,

  640. deep well.

  641. And so to get water

  642. people would have

  643. to climb down

  644. a shaft

  645. and take their

  646. carrier and get

  647. the water

  648. and then they would

  649. have to come back up.

  650. And there was a chief

  651. in this tribe

  652. and this is a true story

  653. by the way.

  654. It's from missionaries

  655. in Africa.

  656. There was a chief

  657. in this tribe

  658. who had many honors

  659. and privileges.

  660. The reason he was

  661. the chief

  662. was because he was

  663. the strongest person

  664. in the whole tribe.

  665. And he had honors

  666. and glories

  667. that went along

  668. with being a chief

  669. so he had a great

  670. headdress.

  671. He had a great robe

  672. that he would always wear.

  673. And one day

  674. there was a man

  675. who went down

  676. to get his water

  677. and while he was down

  678. at the bottom

  679. of the well

  680. he broke his leg.

  681. And so he was

  682. unable

  683. to get back up.

  684. He was trapped

  685. at the bottom

  686. of the well.

  687. There was nothing

  688. he could do.

  689. And so they went

  690. to get the one man

  691. who was able

  692. to do anything

  693. the chief

  694. because the chief

  695. was the only person

  696. strong enough

  697. to go all the way down

  698. and lift this man

  699. up on his back

  700. and carry him up.

  701. But to go down

  702. the shaft

  703. of the well

  704. the chief

  705. could not do it

  706. with his headdress

  707. because it was so big.

  708. And he could not

  709. have his robe on

  710. because he would

  711. get in the way.

  712. And so he took

  713. off the headdress

  714. and he took

  715. off the robe

  716. and he climbed

  717. all the way down

  718. into the shaft

  719. and he was able

  720. to put this man

  721. on his back

  722. and carry him up.

  723. He got rid

  724. of everything

  725. that would give him

  726. glory or power.

  727. Everything that was

  728. his by right

  729. he took down

  730. for the interest

  731. of this man.

  732. And so did he

  733. stop being a chief?

  734. Of course not.

  735. He was still

  736. always the chief.

  737. But he took

  738. off all the things

  739. that gave him

  740. his status

  741. and his authority

  742. and his power

  743. for the sake

  744. of saving this man.

  745. And so did Jesus

  746. cease to become God

  747. when he became man?

  748. Of course not.

  749. He simply took

  750. off everything

  751. that gave him

  752. power and glory.

  753. We're told in Isaiah

  754. that there was

  755. nothing in him

  756. that would cause us

  757. to look at Jesus

  758. and be impressed

  759. with him.

  760. When people saw

  761. Jesus walking around

  762. they did not think

  763. there's a great leader.

  764. There's a man

  765. right there.

  766. No.

  767. There was nothing

  768. that would draw

  769. our attention to him.

  770. There was no beauty

  771. in him.

  772. And yet he laid

  773. it all down

  774. for our sake.

  775. And so Jesus

  776. first of all

  777. he's our model here.

  778. He shows us

  779. that he has lost

  780. more than anyone

  781. else ever lost.

  782. And so

  783. whatever we lose

  784. is less than that

  785. we can follow

  786. after him.

  787. But he's not

  788. just our model.

  789. If Jesus were

  790. just a model

  791. then he would

  792. also be the

  793. stupidest man

  794. who ever lived

  795. because he would

  796. have died

  797. for no reason.

  798. But remember

  799. Jesus is not

  800. just our model

  801. he's our reminder

  802. because as we

  803. look at him

  804. laying aside

  805. all his glory

  806. all his privileges

  807. all his rights

  808. we have to remember

  809. the reason why.

  810. And the reason

  811. he did it

  812. was to die

  813. for our sins.

  814. And you know

  815. that the cost

  816. of the remedy

  817. shows the severity

  818. of the illness

  819. Jesus' death

  820. the fact that he

  821. died for our sins

  822. shows us how

  823. bad off we are.

  824. That we're not

  825. just mistaken

  826. we're not just

  827. incorrect

  828. but we're deeply

  829. broken in every way.

  830. That God was

  831. pouring out

  832. his wrath

  833. on humanity

  834. and Jesus

  835. had to come

  836. and receive

  837. that wrath

  838. for our sake.

  839. And so Jesus

  840. is not just

  841. a model for us

  842. but he's a reminder

  843. a reminder

  844. that as we're

  845. struggling with unity

  846. as we're seeking

  847. the best of others

  848. we have to remember

  849. that our ideas

  850. are not as good

  851. as we think they are.

  852. Because

  853. the reality of sin

  854. doesn't just affect

  855. our emotions

  856. it doesn't just affect

  857. our will

  858. our desires

  859. it affects

  860. every part of us

  861. it affects our mind

  862. as well.

  863. So whatever we want

  864. whatever we're pushing for

  865. the cross

  866. has to give us

  867. a moment to pause

  868. because we have

  869. to remember

  870. how mistaken

  871. we are.

  872. We are so wrong

  873. that Jesus

  874. had to die for us.

  875. And so it causes

  876. us humility

  877. we don't just have

  878. humility

  879. as we follow

  880. after Jesus

  881. as our model

  882. but we have

  883. humility

  884. because he reminds

  885. us of how

  886. desperately

  887. in need of

  888. rescue we are.

  889. How desperately

  890. broken we are

  891. in every part.

  892. and so the gospel

  893. humbles us

  894. because it shows us

  895. that Jesus did

  896. more than we can do

  897. but it also

  898. humbles us

  899. because it shows us

  900. that we needed

  901. him to do it.

  902. There are few

  903. things stronger

  904. in this world

  905. than a person's

  906. need

  907. to be right.

  908. I'll say that again.

  909. There are few

  910. things stronger

  911. in this world

  912. few forces

  913. that are more

  914. powerful

  915. than an individual

  916. person's

  917. need to be

  918. right.

  919. Yet the gospel

  920. frees us from that

  921. because to accept

  922. the gospel

  923. we have to admit

  924. that we're wrong.

  925. To accept

  926. the gospel

  927. we have to

  928. admit

  929. that we're wrong

  930. because Jesus

  931. is not just

  932. our model

  933. but our savior.

  934. And so we can

  935. put the interests

  936. of others

  937. above our own

  938. not just

  939. because we have

  940. the Holy Spirit

  941. working in us

  942. not just because

  943. of Jesus'

  944. example to us

  945. but also

  946. of the reminder

  947. that whatever

  948. we think

  949. whatever we know

  950. whatever we feel

  951. strongly about

  952. none of it

  953. not all of it

  954. can be 100%

  955. correct.

  956. And we know

  957. that our desires

  958. and our

  959. wants and our needs

  960. our temptation

  961. is always

  962. to make them

  963. bigger than

  964. they should be

  965. and less

  966. than they need

  967. to be.

  968. And so the gospel

  969. the story

  970. of Jesus

  971. his life

  972. and his death

  973. and his resurrection

  974. and the news

  975. that he gives us

  976. both empowers us

  977. as we seek

  978. the good of others

  979. and it also

  980. humbles us

  981. that if we admit

  982. our need for him

  983. we have to realize

  984. that we are not

  985. right

  986. even as our desire

  987. to be right

  988. can feel overwhelming

  989. at times.

  990. But it doesn't

  991. end there.

  992. We still have

  993. verses 9 and 11.

  994. Jesus gave up

  995. but then he gains.

  996. In other words

  997. Jesus was willing

  998. to lose everything

  999. for the sake

  1000. of others

  1001. and God gave him

  1002. everything

  1003. in return.

  1004. Jesus didn't

  1005. earn those things

  1006. something didn't

  1007. become true

  1008. of him

  1009. that wasn't

  1010. true before

  1011. but instead

  1012. now we know

  1013. he has the name

  1014. above every other

  1015. name

  1016. because now

  1017. humanity

  1018. is aware

  1019. mankind

  1020. is aware

  1021. of the fact

  1022. that he is

  1023. the one

  1024. who showed us

  1025. what God is like

  1026. he's the one

  1027. that is willing

  1028. to give up

  1029. everything

  1030. for the sake

  1031. of others

  1032. and so it

  1033. doesn't just

  1034. stay in his

  1035. humiliation

  1036. we don't just

  1037. stick with the fact

  1038. that Jesus died

  1039. but it ends

  1040. in his exaltation

1041. it ends in the fact

  1042. that he's risen

  1043. from the dead

  1044. that he's sitting

  1045. at the right hand

  1046. of the father

  1047. and so by losing

  1048. everything

  1049. Jesus gained

  1050. everything

  1051. because God

  1052. gave it to him

  1053. and so Jesus

  1054. isn't just

  1055. our model

  1056. but he's also

  1057. our encouragement

  1058. if we're united

  1059. with him

  1060. if we have

  1061. participation

  1062. in the spirit

  1063. that we see

  1064. in verse 1

  1065. if we have

  1066. his mind

  1067. in verse 5

  1068. then his future

  1069. is our future

  1070. as well

  1071. and so that

  1072. when we lose

  1073. for the sake

  1074. of others

  1075. when we lose

  1076. for the sake

  1077. of Christ

  1078. we also know

  1079. that we will

  1080. gain with him

  1081. we will gain

  1082. everything with him

  1083. that his story

  1084. is our story

  1085. his exaltation

  1086. will ultimately

  1087. result in ours

  1088. when he returns

  1089. in his second coming

  1090. and so his model

  1091. and his story

  1092. belongs to us

  1093. that we can lose

  1094. for the sake

  1095. of others

  1096. because Jesus did

  1097. and we will win

  1098. with him

  1099. because he won

  1100. as well

  1101. but it will look

  1102. like the path

  1103. that he's given us

  1104. a path

  1105. of suffering

  1106. and then glory

  1107. Jesus models

  1108. this for us

  1109. in John 13

  1110. you remember

  1111. in Mark 10

  1112. we had James

  1113. and John

  1114. and they asked

  1115. Jesus if they

  1116. could be great

  1117. if they could be

  1118. the first

  1119. if they could sit

  1120. at his right hand

  1121. in the kingdom

  1122. and Jesus said

  1123. it's not for me

  1124. to give

  1125. but my path

  1126. is the path

  1127. of a servant

  1128. and a slave

  1129. and then he demonstrates

  1130. it in John 13

  1131. by washing

  1132. their feet

  1133. it says

  1134. when Jesus

  1135. had washed

  1136. their feet

  1137. and put on

  1138. his outer garment

  1139. and resumed

  1140. his place

  1141. he said to them

  1142. do you understand

  1143. what I have done

  1144. to you

  1145. you call me

  1146. teacher and Lord

  1147. and you are right

  1148. for so I am

  1149. if I then

  1150. your Lord

  1151. and teacher

  1152. have washed

  1153. your feet

  1154. you also

  1155. ought to wash

  1156. one another's feet

  1157. for I have given

  1158. you an example

  1159. that you also

  1160. do just as I

  1161. have done

  1162. to you

  1163. truly truly

  1164. I say to you

  1165. a servant

  1166. is not greater

  1167. than his master

  1168. nor is a messenger

  1169. greater than

  1170. the one

  1171. who sent him

  1172. if you know

  1173. these things

  1174. blessed are you

  1175. if you do them

  1176. so as the master

  1177. walks

  1178. so walk

  1179. his disciples

  1180. both in his

  1181. giving up

  1182. losing everything

  1183. for our sake

  1184. but also

  1185. in his gaining

  1186. because we

  1187. follow him

  1188. in his suffering

  1189. and his victory

  1190. please pray

  1191. with me

  1192. dear father

  1193. in heaven

  1194. we thank you

  1195. that you

  1196. were willing

  1197. to lose

  1198. everything

  1199. for our sake

  1200. for us

  1201. to gain

  1202. to gain

  1203. life

  1204. because without

  1205. you

  1206. we have

  1207. nothing

  1208. but death

  1209. so we

  1210. thank you

  1211. for that

  1212. we ask

  1213. that you

  1214. would make

  1215. it real

  1216. in our

  1217. lives

  1218. that you

  1219. would give

  1220. us the

  1221. humility

  1222. that comes

  1223. from that

  1224. knowledge

  1225. and you'd

  1226. give us

  1227. the humility

  1228. that comes

  1229. from your

  1230. example

  1231. that you'd

  1232. move in

  1233. us

  1234. that we

  1235. would be

  1236. researchers

  1237. looking out

  1238. for the

  1239. interests of

  1240. others

  1241. above our

  1242. own

  1243. we confess

  1244. that we

  1245. can't do

  1246. it by

  1247. ourselves

  1248. and so we

  1249. ask that you

  1250. would do it

  1251. for us

  1252. we ask all

  1253. these things

  1254. in the name

  1255. of your

  1256. son

  1257. amen
