  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the assistant pastor here at Shine Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you this morning.

  4. Special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  5. We're glad you're here, and we're glad you're here not because you are filling a seat,

  6. but because, as I say every Sunday, we are following after Jesus together as one community,

  7. and we are convinced as we follow after him that there is no one so good that they don't need God's grace,

  8. and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  9. And so we're glad that you're here because God has something to say to everyone,

  10. and everyone needs to hear what God has to say in his word.

  11. And so that's why we spend this time looking at everything that God has to say to us.

  12. Now, I know that many of you have faced an incredible challenge this past week,

  13. and that was the incredible challenge of cooking a turkey.

  14. Now, if you cook turkeys, you know there's lots of things that can go wrong.

  15. You can undercook them and make some of your guests sick.

  16. You don't want to do that. You don't want a dirty bird.

  17. Or you can overcook them and give your guests the unpleasant experience of eating dry bird.

  18. And there's lots of different tricks that you can use to try to make sure you're hitting the right spot,

  19. but there's only one real fail-safe.

  20. There's only one way to know exactly and precisely whether you've cooked your bird enough,

  21. but not too much.

  22. And that is the great modern miracle of the instant reed thermometer,

  23. which you can use.

  24. And, of course, you have to know the right places to put it in the turkey, right?

  25. You have to have some skill in using this.

  26. But if you know what you're doing,

  27. this is your fail-safe method of making sure you don't mess up your turkey.

  28. Now, we are in the book of Philippians.

  29. And if you've been with us, you know we've been going through it for a while.

  30. And we are now at the very end.

  31. We're in the last section.

  32. This is our last sermon on Philippians.

  33. And we have covered a lot of ground.

  34. If you've been with us, you know that we've talked a lot about the gospel.

  35. We've talked a lot about the partnership that comes with the gospel.

  36. And then last week, really two weeks ago,

  37. we talked about the joy that comes from the gospel.

  38. And these are all the things that Paul wants to emphasize.

  39. He wants to tell this church in Philippi over and over again.

  40. And we've talked about the fact that this is a letter.

  41. It's a letter that's written from Paul, who's in prison at the time,

  42. and it's written to a church.

  43. And this church is very much like our church.

  44. And we have talked once before about the logistics of this letter.

  45. So when we talked about Timothy and Epaphroditus,

  46. remember Epaphroditus was a man who was in the Philippian church,

  47. and he visited Paul.

  48. And he visited Paul for two reasons.

  49. One was just to help him, to assist him.

  50. Paul is under house arrest.

  51. He can use all the help he can get.

  52. It's great for him to have a companion, someone to be with him.

  53. But the other reason he came was to deliver a financial gift.

  54. These folks in Philippi had learned that Paul was under house arrest.

  55. They knew his needs.

  56. They were concerned for his needs.

  57. And so they took up a collection of money,

  58. and presumably some other things,

  59. and sent them to him because they cared about him.

  60. They wanted him to know how much they cared about him,

  61. and they also wanted him to be provided for.

  62. They wanted him to have everything that he needed.

  63. And so as we come to the very end of this book,

  64. we're going to find Paul's thank you note.

  65. This is his thank you note to the Philippians for what they've done for him,

  66. what they've given to him, and the ways they've sacrificed.

  67. And so Paul, as he always does, never just says something or thanks someone,

  68. but he uses it as a chance to teach.

  69. And so in this very end, Paul is going to teach about money.

  70. And what we're going to find out is that money is the instant read thermometer of our spiritual lives.

  71. There's many different ways we can try to understand where we are spiritually.

  72. But it's money that Paul presents here as a great test,

  73. a great way to know instantly what is true of our hearts.

  74. This is what we saw in our preparation for worship when we read from the Gospel of Matthew,

  75. that we can have treasure in heaven or treasure on earth.

  76. And so we're going to see three tests here of money.

  77. First, we're going to see a test of our joy.

  78. Second, a test of our partnership.

  79. And third, a test of the Gospel.

  80. A test of our joy, a test of our partnership, and a test of the Gospel.

  81. We're in Philippians chapter 4, and we're starting at verse 10.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  82. Remember that this is God's Word.

  83. And God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold,

  84. even the finest gold,

  85. and that it is sweeter than honey,

  86. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  87. And so please read with me now, starting at verse 10.

  88. I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me.

  89. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.

  90. Not that I am speaking of being in need,

  91. for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.

  92. Verse 12.

  93. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound.

  94. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger,

  95. abundance and need.

  96. Verse 13.

  97. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

  98. Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble.

  99. And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the Gospel,

  100. when I left Macedonia,

  101. no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving except you only.

  102. Verse 16.

  103. Even in Thessalonica, you sent me help for my needs once and again.

  104. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit.

  105. I have received full payment and more.

  106. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent.

  107. A fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God.

  108. Verse 19.

  109. And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Jesus Christ.

  110. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever.

  111. Amen.

  112. Greet every saint in Christ Jesus.

  113. The brothers who are with me greet you.

  114. All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar's household.

  115. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

  116. Lord, please pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  117. Dear Father in heaven,

  118. we thank you that you do strengthen us

  119. and that you do provide everything that we need in Christ Jesus.

  120. And so we ask that you would do that for us this morning.

  121. That you would help us as we listen to your word.

  122. You'd help me as I try to speak your words.

  123. That all of us would hear from you and be changed by you.

  124. We ask this in the name of your son.

  125. Amen.

  126. If you remember from two weeks ago,

  127. we talked about joy and the fact that it is the strike anywhere match of the Christian.

  128. And so it's something that we should be able to have regardless of our circumstances.

  129. Happiness is tied to our circumstances.

  130. Joy is tied to what is not our circumstances.

  131. Things that cannot change.

  132. It's tied to everything that we have in God through Christ.

  133. And so Paul starts out with this again.

  134. Remember in verse 4 he had said,

  135. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  136. And now in verse 10 he says,

  137. I rejoice in the Lord not always this time but greatly

  138. that now at length you have revived your concern for me.

  139. You were indeed concerned for me but you had no opportunity.

  140. And so Paul brings up this topic of joy again.

  141. And his joy it seems at first comes because the Philippians have sent him this gift.

  142. But there's a problem because if his joy comes from the sending of the gift,

  143. it means it must be tied to his circumstances in some way.

  144. And so Paul eager to make sure that the Philippians know that his joy is not rooted in money

  145. gives an immediate qualification here in verses 11 through 13.

  146. Yes, I rejoice.

  147. But it's not because of the money.

  148. I rejoice because you were concerned for me.

  149. And then in verse 14 because they share his trouble.

  150. And the reason he doesn't take joy in the money

  151. is because he has learned a secret.

  152. He's learned this secret in verse 11 of being able to handle multiple circumstances.

  153. That there's this skill when it comes to having money.

  154. That a skill that applies not just to not having enough

  155. but having more than enough.

  156. That being rich is in some ways just as challenging as being poor.

  157. Because we can either trust God or we can trust money.

  158. If we trust God, we'll manage and control our money.

  159. If we trust money, our money will manage and control us.

  160. If we trust money, our money will manage and control us.

  161. If we trust God, we will manage and control our money.

  162. And so in the midst of this gift, Paul wants them to know

  163. that regardless of their circumstances, money is not the source of their joy.

  164. There's a skill.

  165. There's a skill for the rich and for the poor.

  166. Paul has experienced both, we find out.

  167. He's been brought low and he's abounded.

  168. He's had plenty and he's been hungry.

  169. But in all of those circumstances, he hasn't let his joy rest on what his financial state is.

  170. He's learned this secret and he knows that it's a challenge for everyone.

  171. This is an instant read thermometer,

  172. not just for people who have a lot of money,

  173. but people who don't have enough.

  174. It's a challenge for everyone to not find joy in the resources that we have,

  175. but the joy in what God has given us that we cannot lose.

  176. I have a friend who immediately after he graduated from college became a ski instructor

  177. here at Keystone in Summit County here in Colorado.

  178. So this was his first job out of college and his paycheck week to week was dependent on

  179. who signed up for lessons, you know, whether it was a private lesson,

  180. which he would make more money on, whether it was a group lesson.

  181. He had to figure out living expenses in this ski town.

  182. And so he had a lot of variables from week to week financially about how things would go for him.

  183. And one day he had a big break.

  184. So there was a group of executives.

  185. There was a CEO and all his executive team, his vice presidents,

  186. who came to Keystone and they decided this was going to be their business retreat.

  187. They were going to spend all this time together.

  188. This would be a time for them to bond and plan.

  189. And they were going to spend the entire morning all taking private ski lessons.

  190. And they would then meet back up in the afternoon to debrief, have time together.

  191. They were going to actually have time with their ski instructors

  192. and do the business that they had before them.

  193. Now my friend, his name was Camper.

  194. Camper was assigned vice president of a company.

  195. This was at the time a billion dollar company.

  196. And he had a bad feeling right away.

  197. This vice president was an older man.

  198. He was not in great shape.

  199. He had never skied before.

  200. And so Camper thought to himself,

  201. here's this powerful man who has everything.

  202. And I'm going to ask him to put really slick things on his feet

  203. and then ask him to get on a slick surface.

  204. And so they got out and started the lesson.

  205. And this man became instantly frustrated.

  206. He became angry.

  207. And about 20 minutes into the lesson,

  208. he just rips his skis off and he throws them down on the ground.

  209. Just says, I am finished.

  210. His wife is standing there, by the way, just completely embarrassed.

  211. And so he walks away, but he walks up to my friend first

  212. and he takes a $100 bill and he shoves it into his hand.

  213. He said, here, this is for you.

  214. My friend said, I can't accept this.

  215. You didn't enjoy it.

  216. You only spent 20 minutes of your three-hour lesson.

  217. And I'm going to get to ski by myself on the slips for the next three hours.

  218. And I'm still going to get paid.

  219. So I can't accept your money.

  220. You take it.

  221. You didn't enjoy the lesson.

  222. You go.

  223. So the man looks at him and he said,

  224. when you have as much money as I do,

  225. then you can say no.

  226. And he shoved the $100 bill in his hand and walked away.

  227. And so on the one hand,

  228. we have someone who knows how to abound, who has plenty.

  229. And yet there's security.

  230. Their worth, their identity is found in their money.

  231. This is someone who, though they have no need,

  232. they don't know what Paul talks about here.

  233. They don't know how to be content in every situation.

  234. They don't know how to do all things through him who strengthens them.

  235. Instead, this is someone whose money was where they tried to find their joy,

  236. their meaning, and their identity.

  237. And so when anything challenged that, a ski lesson that went wrong,

  238. a ski instructor who didn't want to say yes to their tip,

  239. that was what they turned back to, their money.

  240. On the other hand, you had someone whose income would fluctuate week to week,

  241. who could really use $100 to buy groceries

  242. as he's trying to figure out his post-college life

  243. being a ski instructor here in Colorado.

  244. And yet this is someone, my friend, who has great faith.

  245. And so he's not willing to take this $100 because that's not the source of his joy.

  246. Even as he's trying to figure out how he's going to support himself

  247. and make it week to week,

  248. that is not what he looks to for his security.

  249. And so Paul here is speaking both to those who have a lot of money

  250. and those who do not.

  251. Both the man who shoves the $100 bill into someone else's hands

  252. and says, you don't get to say no to that,

  253. and the person who takes it.

  254. There's a skill to knowing that our joy

  255. doesn't come from our material circumstances.

  256. It comes from God.

  257. And so that's why Paul says he rejoiced in the Lord greatly.

  258. He's grateful for this gift that the Philippians give to him,

  259. but it is not the source of his joy.

  260. And so both the rich and the poor have the challenge

  261. of taking confidence in their things rather than God.

  262. If you're rich, you have the temptation to be confident in things rather than God

  263. should make you smug and numb and insulated.

  264. If you're poor, you have the temptation to take confidence in things rather than God,

  265. making you anxious and fearful and grasping for money.

  266. But Paul here is telling us that there is a different way,

  267. that there is joy that comes in trusting in God and others.

  268. And it's not just something that people outside the church need to learn and grow in,

  269. but us inside the church as well.

  270. So my friend Camper, he went skiing for the next three hours,

  271. but he still had to show up at this lunch.

  272. So there was a lunch where the ski instructors and this executive suite

  273. were going to get together at the bottom of the hill.

  274. And so he went, he had his time skiing, felt terrible.

  275. This man had just completely belittled him, dehumanized him.

  276. And so he walks into the lunchroom.

  277. And the vice president makes a beeline for him.

  278. And he said,

  279. Camper,

  280. I treated you terribly earlier.

  281. I was frustrated because I couldn't ski,

  282. but I shouldn't have talked to you that way.

  283. I shouldn't have treated you like that.

  284. Will you forgive me?

  285. My friend said,

  286. he said,

  287. yes, I'll forgive you.

  288. And then this man said,

  289. I believe in Jesus.

  290. And he's been doing a great work in my life.

  291. My friend said,

  292. yes, I believe in Jesus too.

  293. And he's doing a great work in my life as well.

  294. And so both the rich and the poor

  295. were able to reconcile there

  296. and walk away with a joy that they did not have before.

  297. The man who took confidence in his wealth,

  298. even he was someone who was following after Jesus,

  299. but he still struggled with what Paul is talking about here.

  300. He struggled with the skill of,

  301. as we see in verse 12,

  302. knowing how to abound.

  303. He was still learning how to have a lot of money.

  304. And my friend,

  305. Camper,

  306. was still learning the skill of how to be brought low.

  307. But both of them together had access to God's grace.

  308. This Christ president was not so bad

  309. that he couldn't have God's grace.

  310. And my friend,

  311. Camper,

  312. wasn't so good that he didn't need it.

  313. But both of them needed to grow

  314. and were growing

  315. in learning this secret,

  316. the test of joy.

  317. That their joy comes not from their

  318. financial circumstances,

  319. but from their status in Christ.

  320. And so that's what Paul is telling us in verse 13

  321. when he says,

  322. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

  323. This is a widely abused verse.

  324. There's a,

  325. Stephen Curry you may know

  326. as the most valuable player

  327. at several points in the NBA.

  328. And he's famous for having Philippians 4.13

  329. written on his sneakers.

  330. In fact,

  331. I believe the story is

  332. that Nike refused to take his sneaker deal

  333. because of it.

  334. So he went to Under Armour

  335. and then Under Armour went to the bank.

  336. This passage

  337. is not about shooting basketballs.

  338. Philippians 4.13

  339. is not about being able to drop threes.

  340. But instead,

  341. Paul is saying

  342. that he can do all things

  343. through God who strengthens him.

  344. In other words,

  345. he can do everything

  346. that we've seen in the last two verses.

  347. He can face

  348. every circumstance

  349. because it's God

  350. that strengthens him.

  351. He knows how to handle wealth

  352. and he also knows

  353. how to handle poverty.

  354. And so his joy

  355. does not come from either one.

  356. In other words,

  357. I can find joy in all things

  358. through him who strengthens me.

  359. I can bear up

  360. under any circumstance

  361. through him who strengthens me.

  362. That is not the source

  363. of my joy.

  364. And so joy comes from,

  365. as we talked about two weeks ago,

  366. trusting God and others.

  367. Trusting God and others here

  368. rather than money.

  369. And so money is the test

  370. of our joy.

  371. It's also the test

  372. of our partnership.

  373. You notice that Paul says here

  374. in verses 10

  375. and then in 14,

  376. he finds joy

  377. in their concern for him.

  378. In verse 14,

  379. it was kind of you

  380. to share my trouble.

  381. And you, Philippians,

  382. verse 15,

  383. yourselves know that

  384. in the beginning of the gospel,

  385. when I left Macedonia,

  386. no church entered

  387. into partnership with me

  388. in giving and receiving

  389. except you only.

  390. Even in Thessalonica,

  391. you sent me help

  392. for my needs

  393. once and again.

  394. In other words,

  395. this is a partnership

  396. kind of church

  397. and they have shown

  398. their partnership

  399. by partnering financially

  400. with Paul.

  401. We find out in a different letter

  402. that Paul wrote

  403. in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9

  404. that this church,

  405. the churches in Macedonia,

  406. and he's probably talking

  407. about the Philippian church,

  408. at least includes

  409. the Philippian church,

  410. it might include others,

  411. is known for their generosity.

  412. He uses them as an example

  413. for other churches.

  414. Look at these Philippians

  415. who know how to be generous.

  416. Be like them.

  417. And so,

  418. they are practicing

  419. everything that we saw

  420. in Philippians 2.

  421. Remember in Philippians 2,

  422. Paul deals with their disunity

  423. by saying,

  424. look not only

  425. to the interest of others.

  426. Excuse me,

  427. look not only

  428. to your own interest

  429. but also to the interest of others.

  430. Do what Jesus did.

  431. And we applied that then

  432. to the problem of unity,

  433. but here it applies

  434. financially as well.

  435. The church in Philippi

  436. did not look

  437. only to their own interest

  438. financially,

  439. but they were looking out

  440. for the interest

  441. of others as well.

  442. They were looking out

  443. for the interest of Paul.

  444. And so here they're modeling

  445. being question people

  446. rather than answer people.

  447. The church in Philippi

  448. is asking.

  449. They're trying to figure out

  450. what Paul's needs are

  451. and then seeking to meet them

  452. and we find out

  453. they've more than met them

  454. later in this passage.

  455. But then Paul,

  456. and we'll talk about this

  457. in a minute in verse 17,

  458. is not interested

  459. in the money

  460. they're giving them.

  461. He's interested

  462. in their spiritual growth.

  463. And so Paul and this church

  464. are a beautiful model

  465. of each of them

  466. looking out

  467. for the needs

  468. of each other.

  469. But we're also

  470. seeing a key truth here

  471. which is that finances

  472. are part of our partnership.

  473. Paul thanks them

  474. for their partnership

  475. at various times

  476. in the letter,

  477. sometimes for their partnership

  478. just in suffering

  479. and being with him,

  480. their partnership

  481. in working side by side.

  482. But here their partnership

  483. is explicitly financial.

  484. They are giving him

  485. what's most precious to them.

  486. They're giving him

  487. some of their financial resources.

  488. They're giving him gifts.

  489. And so if we are,

  490. as we talked about

  491. in our very first

  492. sermon on Philippians,

  493. if we are seeking

  494. after the treasure

  495. together,

  496. then we're also willing

  497. to give some of our treasure.

  498. If we're seeking

  499. after the treasure together,

  500. the great treasure

  501. of the gospel,

  502. then we're also going

  503. to be willing

  504. to give our treasure

  505. to others along the way.

  506. I had a friend

  507. who in his senior year

  508. of college,

  509. there's lots of college

  510. stories here,

  511. year after college,

  512. year of senior year

  513. of college,

  514. he went to a conference

  515. with a bunch of other

  516. college students

  517. and he listened

  518. to a speaker

  519. and this speaker

  520. was at the time

  521. near the top

  522. of one of the largest

  523. consulting firms

  524. in the nation,

  525. if not the world.

  526. And this man

  527. was a Christian believer

  528. and so he was giving

  529. a talk about

  530. finding joy

  531. in God

  532. rather than money.

  533. And he was very open

  534. during this talk

  535. at various points.

  536. He said,

  537. you know,

  538. if you want afterwards

  539. you can come up

  540. and you can ask me anything.

  541. My friend listening

  542. to this talk

  543. was very cynical.

  544. He thought,

  545. this man has nothing

  546. to tell me

  547. about finding joy

  548. in God

  549. rather than money.

  550. He works for a major

  551. consulting firm.

  552. He has all the money

  553. he could ever need.

  554. What do I have to learn

  555. from this man?

  556. He has nothing to say to me.

  557. And so my friend

  558. was very bold

  559. and he went up

  560. after the talk.

  561. He said,

  562. well,

  563. this man said

  564. we can ask him anything

  565. so I'm going to

  566. take him up on the offer.

  567. And so he started out

  568. with a very light

  569. and easy question.

  570. He said,

  571. you said we could

  572. ask you anything

  573. so I just want to know

  574. how much money

  575. do you make a year?

  576. This man said,

  577. yes.

  578. I did say you could

  579. ask me anything

  580. so I'll tell you.

  581. It varies year to year

  582. based on how

  583. our firm performs

  584. but I make

  585. usually it's high

  586. six figures,

  587. low seven figures.

  588. So this man was averaging

  589. about a million dollars

  590. a year.

  591. So my friend said,

  592. okay,

  593. I'm going to ask you

  594. another question.

  595. How much of that

  596. do you give away?

  597. The man said,

  598. well,

  599. I'm going to start

  600. with how much

  601. my wife and I

  602. live off of.

  603. We have a house,

  604. we've paid it off.

  605. We have two cars,

  606. we've paid it off.

  607. We've put our kids

  608. through college.

  609. You know,

  610. we're near the end

  611. of our career.

  612. So we live off

  613. about $30,000 to $40,000

  614. a year.

  615. And so my friend

  616. then asked him,

  617. okay,

  618. well,

  619. how much do you

  620. give away?

  621. He said,

  622. we give away

  623. the rest of it.

  624. My friend,

  625. thinking that he

  626. was going to

  627. show this man

  628. for the scam

  629. that he was

  630. and reveal that he

  631. had nothing to share

  632. about money,

  633. actually walked away

  634. not just humbled

  635. but encouraged

  636. and he thought

  637. as he walked away,

  638. I wish that there

  639. was a way of knowing

  640. that there are more

  641. people like that

  642. in the world.

  643. And then as he

  644. watched this man

  645. for the rest of the

  646. weekend,

  647. he said,

  648. I could tell that

  649. this was a man

  650. who was filled

  651. with joy

  652. because he

  653. trusted God

  654. rather than money

  655. and so he managed

  656. and controlled his money

  657. rather than letting it

  658. manage and control

  659. him.

  660. Now,

  661. most of us don't make

  662. high six figures

  663. to low seven figures

  664. a year,

  665. but the point is this,

  666. this man knew

  667. the secret

  668. of looking not only

  669. to his own interests

  670. but also to the interests

  671. of others.

  672. He wasn't going to the

  673. poor house over his giving

  674. but he also wasn't

  675. taking his money

  676. and using it to find

  677. his security

  678. and his worth.

  679. He wasn't storing

  680. all of it away

  681. as a way

  682. of investing everything

  683. in case something

  684. went wrong.

  685. I'm sure this man

  686. had saved

  687. for retirement.

  688. I'm sure he had

  689. what he needed

  690. set aside

  691. but this was a

  692. partnership kind of man.

  693. This was a man

  694. who looked not only

  695. to his own interests

  696. but also

  697. to the interests

  698. of others

  699. and so that's what

  700. Paul is telling us

  701. here as well

  702. that our money

  703. is not just

  704. the test,

  705. not just the instant

  706. read thermometer

  707. on our joy

  708. but it's also

  709. the test

  710. of our partnership.

  711. If we are truly

  712. going after

  713. the partnership

  714. with one another,

  715. going after the treasure

  716. then we will share

  717. our treasure as well.

  718. And so money

  719. is our test

  720. of our joy,

  721. a test of our partnership

  722. but it's also a test

  723. of the gospel.

  724. Paul tells us

  725. in verse 17

  726. that he doesn't

  727. seek the gift

  728. primarily.

  729. It is useful

  730. for him.

  731. They have met

  732. needs of his

  733. but that's not

  734. his primary interest

  735. in their giving to him.

  736. Instead,

  737. he seeks what he calls

  738. the fruit

  739. that increases

  740. to your credit.

  741. This again

  742. is what we talked

  743. about in chapter 1

  744. of Philippians

  745. that they would

  746. increase and grow

  747. that their faith

  748. and their love

  749. would abound

  750. more and more.

  751. And then he tells us

  752. that he has received

  753. full payment

  754. that this

  755. has been a fragrant

  756. offering to God

  757. that this giving

  758. is a sign

  759. that the gospel

  760. has been at work

  761. in their lives.

  762. Not only does it show

  763. that they're finding

  764. their joy

  765. in the right place,

  766. not only does it show

  767. that they're partnering

  768. fully,

  769. but it shows

  770. that they understand

  771. the gospel

  772. at a fundamental level.

  773. These are people

  774. who have understood

  775. the fact

  776. that God provides

  777. for them.

  778. They know

  779. what Paul tells us

  780. in verses 13 and 19.

  781. They know

  782. that they can do

  783. all things

  784. through God

  785. who strengthens them.

  786. And then they know

  787. in verse 19

  788. that God will supply

  789. every need of theirs

  790. according to his riches

  791. and glory

  792. in Christ Jesus.

  793. And so because

  794. these people

  795. have had trust

  796. in God,

  797. that has resulted

  798. in them.

  799. The fruit

  800. of their trust

  801. in him

  802. is that they've given.

  803. And so the point

  804. is not

  805. that we need

  806. to give more

  807. to God

  808. or others

  809. to prove something

  810. to him

  811. or earn something

  812. from him.

  813. Instead,

  814. the point is

  815. the more

  816. that we understand

  817. that we have

  818. nothing to prove

  819. to God

  820. and nothing

  821. that we can earn

  822. from him,

  823. the more

  824. we will find

  825. ourselves

  826. naturally

  827. being generous

  828. to others.

  829. That as Paul

  830. looks at the lives

  831. of the people

  832. in Philippi,

  833. he sees this giving

  834. as fruit

  835. of God's work

  836. in their lives.

  837. And so it reveals

  838. what is already true,

  839. that they understand

  840. the gospel,

  841. they understand

  842. what God is doing

  843. and what he's done

  844. for them,

  845. and so it frees them up

  846. because they trust God

  847. rather than money,

  848. because they manage

  849. and control their money

  850. rather than letting

  851. their money manage

  852. and control them,

  853. the very natural,

  854. intuitive,

  855. logical next step

  856. is simply that they

  857. would be generous

  858. with the people

  859. around them.

  860. Many of you

  861. have probably already

  862. gone out

  863. and bought Christmas trees,

  864. and those of you

  865. who haven't

  866. will probably do so soon.

  867. And the one thing

  868. I find fascinating

  869. about Christmas trees

  870. is that they always

  871. look so symmetrical.

  872. I'm not sure

  873. how they do that

  874. on Christmas tree farms,

  875. but if you go out

  876. in nature,

  877. if you're out

  878. in the wilderness,

  879. you will be

  880. very challenged

  881. to find a symmetrical tree.

  882. If you haven't

  883. thought about that before,

  884. the next time you're out

  885. somewhere that's not

  886. in a well-manicured

  887. neighborhood

  888. or a Christmas tree farm,

  889. just go out

  890. in the wilderness

  891. and look at a tree

  892. and see if you can find

  893. one that's exactly

  894. the same on either side.

  895. And if you do,

  896. just go onto a different side

  897. and you'll realize

  898. you were wrong.

  899. Now there's a lot

  900. of reasons that trees

  901. grow differently

  902. on different sides,

  903. but one of the primary

  904. reasons is the way

  905. that the sun works.

  906. So the sun is brightest

  907. when it's in the southern sky.

  908. We know that.

  909. That's why people like

  910. to get out early

  911. in the morning

  912. before it's too hot.

  913. And if the sun is brightest

  914. in the southern sky,

  915. then it only makes sense

  916. that the branches

  917. of the tree

  918. that are on the southern side

  919. are going to be

  920. longer and fuller.

  921. Because the tree

  922. knows what's right.

  923. It knows that the sun

  924. is the source

  925. of its life.

  926. And so it knows

  927. that the more

  928. it points itself

  929. towards that,

  930. the more it's going

  931. to be able to grow.

  932. And the more it grows,

  933. the more it points

  934. itself towards that.

  935. And so what Paul

  936. is telling us here,

  937. and he tells us

  938. that this is the fruit,

  939. is that the more

  940. that we know

  941. that God

  942. is the source

  943. of our life,

  944. the more we know

  945. the truth

  946. of verse 19,

  947. the more we will

  948. find ourselves

  949. growing towards him.

  950. And the more

  951. that we find ourselves

  952. growing towards him,

  953. the natural result,

  954. the natural growth,

  955. the natural fruit

  956. will result

  957. in our generosity

  958. to others.

  959. And so Paul

  960. is not

  961. preaching a

  962. prosperity gospel

  963. here.

  964. He's not saying

  965. the more you give,

  966. the more you'll get.

  967. In fact,

  968. he's telling us

  969. that he's experienced

  970. poverty before.

  971. But instead,

  972. he's telling us

  973. the more

  974. that we understand

  975. God

  976. and his provision

  977. for us,

  978. the more that we know

  979. that not a hair

  980. can fall from our heads

  981. without him knowing,

  982. the more we will

  983. look to him

  984. and the less

  985. we will look to money.

  986. And so Paul

  987. ends

  988. where he began

  989. in this letter.

  990. Remember,

  991. he began by telling them

  992. he wished them

  993. to have grace

  994. and peace.

  995. Grace,

  996. the forgiveness

  997. that comes from God

  998. because Jesus died

  999. even though he didn't sin

1000. so that we could live

  1001. even though we do.

  1002. And then he ends

  1003. in the same way

  1004. in verse 23,

1005. the grace of the Lord

  1006. Jesus Christ

  1007. be with your spirit.

  1008. And so God

1009. has looked out for you

1010. not only in the past,

1011. not only in the grace

  1012. that he gives you

  1013. by what Jesus did

  1014. when he died

  1015. on the cross,

  1016. but that means

  1017. he's also looking out

1018. for you in the present.

1019. And so you can hope

  1020. and trust in him

  1021. as we wait now

  1022. for the future.

  1023. We can trust him

  1024. with our lives

  1025. because he looks out

  1026. for us,

1027. not just in the past,

1028. not just in the future,

  1029. but in the present.

1030. And so we can grow

  1031. more and more

1032. as we look to him

1033. as our source of life.

  1034. Please pray with me.

  1035. Dear Father in heaven,

  1036. we thank you

  1037. that not a hair

1038. can fall from our heads

  1039. without you knowing,

  1040. that you are

1041. the source of our life,

  1042. that you provide

  1043. everything that we need.

  1044. We ask that you

1045. remind us of it again,

  1046. that you'd pour out

  1047. your spirit on us,

  1048. that you'd grow us,

  1049. that we would grow

  1050. more and more

  1051. towards you

  1052. and also grow more

  1053. in our generosity

  1054. towards others.

1055. We ask all these things

1056. in the name of your son.

  1057. Amen.
