  1. Thank you, men.

  2. Well, as Matthew takes a little bit of time off,

  3. word on the street is he's coming up to a big responsibility soon.

  4. So he's taking a little bit of time off and seeing family.

  5. And because we are Presbyterian,

  6. we believe that we're all ordained men who can bring the word of God.

  7. So it fell to me this morning.

  8. So I have a question for you this morning.

  9. What did you get for Christmas?

  10. Was it something good?

  11. Was it something that you're really planning on enjoying?

  12. Or is it something that you just can't wait to re-gift?

  13. And as I was thinking about this,

  14. this will kind of give you a little bit of an insight into my brain

  15. and how I work, and y'all can pray for my wife.

  16. As I was thinking about gifts and good gifts,

  17. I started thinking about exercise equipment.

  18. And one of the reasons that I started thinking about exercise equipment

  19. is I've never been to a Goodwill or to a used sports store

  20. that didn't have a plethora of used treadmills, elliptical machines.

  21. And I just happened to be watching TV,

  22. and I saw this commercial for this exercise bike.

  23. And this woman goes into the storeroom

  24. and sees the exercise bike that her husband has bought for her.

  25. And she starts sneaking around behind his back

  26. to go use it before Christmas morning.

  27. And at one point, wakes up at 2 o'clock in the morning,

  28. puts on her exercise clothes,

  29. runs out, exercises on it,

  30. and then comes and gets back in bed.

  31. And on Christmas morning is just so surprised

  32. that she has gotten this exercise bike.

  33. So I don't understand if that's the case for these exercise bikes,

  34. why do so many of them end up at Goodwill,

  35. used sports stores, in basements holding hanging clothes.

  36. Don't raise your hands.

  37. What is it about a good gift

  38. that we love on Christmas morning,

  39. but by February is holding boxes in dirty clothes?

  40. Our passage this morning,

  41. and it is from the New Testament,

  42. not the Old Testament,

  43. is Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2:22–38

  44. verses 22 through 38.

  45. So turn in or turn on your Bible

  46. and follow along with me

  47. or follow in your worship guide.

  48. This is Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2:22–38

  49. verses 22 through 38.

  50. And when the time came for their purification,

  51. according to the law of Moses,

  52. they brought him up to Jerusalem

  53. to present him to the Lord,

  54. as it is written in the law of the Lord,

  55. every male who opens the womb

  56. shall be called holy to the Lord.

  57. And to offer a sacrifice,

  58. according to what it is said

  59. in the law of the Lord,

  60. a pair of turtle doves,

  61. or two young pigeons.

  62. Now there was a man in Jerusalem

  63. whose name was Simeon.

  64. And this man was righteous and devout,

  65. waiting for the consolation of Israel.

  66. And the Holy Spirit was upon him.

  67. And it had been revealed to him

  68. by the Holy Spirit

  69. that he would not see death

  70. before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

  71. And he came in the Spirit

  72. into the temple.

  73. And when the parents brought in the child Jesus

  74. to do for him,

  75. according to the custom of the law,

  76. he took him up in his arms

  77. and blessed God and said,

  78. Lord, now you are letting your servant

  79. depart in peace,

  80. according to your word.

  81. For my eyes have seen your salvation

  82. that you have prepared

  83. in the presence of all peoples,

  84. a light for revelation to the Gentiles

  85. and for glory to your people Israel.

  86. Verse 33.

  87. And his father and mother marveled

  88. at what was said about him.

  89. And Simeon blessed them

  90. and said to Mary his mother,

  91. Behold, this child is appointed

  92. for the fall and rising

  93. of many in Israel

  94. and for a sign that is to be opposed.

  95. And a sword will pierce your own soul also,

  96. so that thoughts from many hearts

  97. may be revealed.

  98. And there was a prophetess, Anna,

  99. the daughter of Phanuel,

  100. of the tribe of Asher.

  101. She was advanced in years,

  102. having lived with her husband

  103. seven years from when she was a virgin

  104. and then as a widow until she was 84.

  105. She did not depart from the temple,

  106. worshiping with fasting and prayer

  107. night and day.

  108. And coming up at that very hour,

  109. she began to give thanks to God

  110. and to all.

  111. Father, we thank you for the gift of your word

  112. as we study it corporately this morning.

  113. I pray that you would remove me

  114. from the equation

  115. so that as we read and study,

  116. the only thing that we see

  117. is your son, Jesus Christ,

  118. revealed to us through the Holy Spirit.

  119. Father, open our hearts

  120. and renew our minds this morning

  121. as we read and study your word.

  122. Amen.

  123. So we see three different responses

  124. to Jesus' appearance at the temple.

  125. We see Mary and Joseph's devotion to the law.

  126. We see Simeon's reaction

  127. as he is waiting for the consolation of Israel.

  128. And we're presented with Anna's overflowing praise.

  129. So if you're keeping score,

  130. we're going to look at

  131. Jesus and Mary's piety,

  132. Simeon's prophecy,

  133. and Anna's praise.

  134. So first let's look at

  135. Mary and Joseph's piety.

  136. Mary and Joseph were indeed richly blessed.

  137. And it is vital that we understand

  138. their devotion to the law of God.

  139. And how it fits.

  140. Because if you get this wrong,

  141. you end up on a treadmill headed for hell.

  142. And some of you may think that's hyperbole,

  143. but it's not.

  144. We have to understand this rightly.

  145. When you look at verse 22,

  146. Mary and Joseph brought up to Jerusalem

  147. according to the law of Moses.

  148. Verse 24,

  149. they were obedient to the law of the Lord.

  150. Verse 39,

  151. which is outside of our reading.

  152. They did not depart

  153. until they had completed everything

  154. according to the law.

  155. Their obedience

  156. looks a lot like the Pharisees.

  157. But it's different.

  158. And the difference is,

  159. Mary and Joseph's obedience

  160. is rooted in humility

  161. and in gratitude.

  162. We know this because

  163. if you flip back to the previous chapter

  164. in what's called The Magnificent,

  165. when Mary prays,

  166. she says,

  167. verse 46 through 49,

  168. My soul magnifies the Lord

  169. and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

  170. For he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

  171. For behold,

  172. from now on all generations will call me blessed.

  173. For he who is mighty has done great things for me

  174. and holy is his name.

  175. These are not the words of someone

  176. who is trying to be obedient

  177. to earn something from God.

  178. You see,

  179. the Pharisees had taken the Ten Commandments

  180. and they had set them up

  181. to ensure that no one ever broke them.

  182. And then they went a step further

  183. and they said,

  184. we need rules around the Ten Commandments

  185. to make sure that we don't break the Ten Commandments.

  186. So, for example,

  187. you shall not work on the Sabbath.

  188. That became,

  189. you cannot wear shoes that have nails in them

  190. because if you are walking with shoes

  191. with nails in them,

  192. you're carrying nails

  193. and that's doing work.

  194. If you spit on the ground on the Sabbath,

  195. normally common courtesy is you cover it up,

  196. but you can't do that on the Sabbath

  197. because you would be moving dirt

  198. and that would be tantamount to plowing

  199. on the Sabbath.

  200. But wait,

  201. there's 613 do's and do not's

  202. in the Old Testament.

  203. That's more rules.

  204. Let's set up some rules around them.

  205. So now you have so many rules,

  206. you have to have one thing more

  207. because nobody can track all these rules.

  208. You need referees

  209. that you can go ask.

  210. If you're about to break one of these rules,

  211. whether or not it's okay.

  212. And we're going to call these referees lawyers.

  213. And that way you can go and ask a lawyer.

  214. And what they did was they created

  215. a system where people just went around

  216. and looked for loopholes.

  217. How do I get around this?

  218. So the majority of the questions to the lawyers were,

  219. how do I get around this?

  220. How do I get past this?

  221. It reminds me of W.C. Fields

  222. was an actor in the old-timey Hollywood

  223. in black and white films

  224. and he led a life of great excess.

  225. And at the end of his life,

  226. one of his friends saw him in the garden

  227. reading his Bible.

  228. And the friend said to him,

  229. what are you doing?

  230. And his response was,

  231. I'm looking for loopholes.

  232. A modern example of this

  233. is a man by the name of Smokey Yunk.

  234. Now, many of us have never heard of this man,

  235. but during the 60s,

  236. he was the leading crew chief in NASCAR.

  237. And the NASCAR officials hated Smokey

  238. because his cars would go so much further

  239. than anybody else's cars.

  240. And they would test his cars

  241. and they would fill them up with fuel

  242. and they would hold exactly the right amount of fuel.

  243. Well, the reason is because Smokey would

  244. inflate basketballs in the gas tank.

  245. And that way they would hold the exact amount of gas

  246. and then he would deflate the basketballs

  247. and pour more gas into them.

  248. So they wrote a rule called the Smokey Rule

  249. that you could not have anything else in the gas tank.

  250. But his cars were still going so much further

  251. than everybody else's cars.

  252. So they wanted to inspect the car.

  253. They brought it in.

  254. They removed the gas tank.

  255. And in my favorite Smokey story,

  256. Smokey gets in and starts up the car

  257. and drives off even though it has no gas tank.

  258. Because Smokey had discovered

  259. if you put enough fuel line from the gas tank to the engine,

  260. you could hold an extra five gallons of fuel.

  261. He was so prolific

  262. at working around and finding loopholes

  263. if you drove to church this morning,

  264. there is a good chance you used one of his loopholes.

  265. He had 12 patents when he finally retired from NASCAR.

  266. I tell you this because

  267. this is how the Pharisees thought

  268. about the law of God,

  269. not the rules of NASCAR.

  270. How do we get around?

  271. Mary and Joseph were humble.

  272. The Pharisees prayed to be admired.

  273. This is the difference.

  274. You see, if you are trying to manipulate God through obedience

  275. to get better kids,

  276. a better marriage,

  277. a better job.

  278. What do you do when the wheels come off?

  279. And the wheels will come off

  280. because we live in a fallen world.

  281. Some false prophets will say,

  282. well, you just need to do more.

  283. You just need to give more.

  284. You just need to sacrifice more.

  285. That is a lie from the pit of hell.

  286. You can't sacrifice enough

  287. to earn God's favor.

  288. What are you going to give God

  289. that He doesn't already have?

  290. What are you going to do for God

  291. that He can't do for Himself?

  292. Joseph and Mary were pious.

  293. And they were devoted to the law.

  294. But it was not to earn God's favor.

  295. It was because what God had already done for them.

  296. C.S. Lewis says it this way,

  297. and he has a way of saying things

  298. very clearly and succinctly.

  299. God does not love you because you are good.

  300. God makes you good because He loves you.

  301. You understand the distinctive there?

  302. They followed God's law

  303. because God's word said to.

  304. And He is a loving Father

  305. who wants what's best for them.

  306. God's love for you.

  307. God's love for you.

  308. God's love for you.

  309. God's love for you.

  310. So that's Mary and Joseph's piety.

  311. Simeon's prophecy

  312. is the next thing I'd like to look at.

  313. We're told that He was a man of Jerusalem,

  314. that He was righteous,

  315. that He was devout.

  316. We're also told that He was waiting

  317. on the consolation of Israel.

  318. Or another way of saying this,

  319. He was looking for the salvation of Israel.

  320. I think sometimes when we picture this scene

  321. of Simeon waiting for Mary and Joseph,

  322. we tend to think these are the only two people

  323. in the temple.

  324. And that's not accurate.

  325. I think a better way to think of it

  326. is a busy market,

  327. or even better, a mall at Christmas.

  328. And there's no crowd control devices.

  329. People are just a sea of humanity

  330. going back and forth and back and forth.

  331. And Simeon, over years of waiting,

  332. has a good vantage point.

  333. And he's watching.

  334. And the Holy Spirit,

  335. the third member of the Trinity,

  336. has said,

  337. Simeon, today's the day.

  338. Something good is going to happen.

  339. You're going to see the second member of the Trinity.

  340. The salvation of Israel.

  341. So Simeon, at a good vantage point,

  342. head on a swivel,

  343. looking back and forth across the crowd

  344. and looking around

  345. and waiting

  346. as he's waited for so long.

  347. And finally,

  348. he sees Mary and Joseph.

  349. Joseph more than likely

  350. has now secured the two birds

  351. and he's clutching them.

  352. Because if they get away,

  353. he's got to go buy more

  354. and he doesn't have enough money

  355. for more birds.

  356. Mary is clutching Jesus.

  357. And Simeon is making his way

  358. through the crowd.

  359. The sea of humanity.

  360. And he approaches Mary

  361. and probably just holds out his hands.

  362. And Mary,

  363. Joseph, unable to let the birds go,

  364. really can't step in front and say no.

  365. Mary now seeing,

  366. she's seen the shepherds appear.

  367. She's had Gabriel come in.

  368. She's just,

  369. just miraculous things are happening.

  370. And she just hands Simeon her baby.

  371. And Simeon,

  372. what does Simeon do?

  373. He says,

  374. now I can die.

  375. Now I can go.

  376. Old Testament prophets have been,

  377. this is not the first Old Testament prophet

  378. to ask to die.

  379. Elijah asked to die

  380. because he wanted to escape his pursuers.

  381. Moses wanted to die

  382. because he wanted to escape his responsibilities.

  383. Simeon is the first one that says,

  384. I have seen the salvation of Israel.

  385. I can go now.

  386. I am complete.

  387. I am full.

  388. And then,

  389. he sings.

  390. As Matthew told us last week,

  391. singing is the thing that,

  392. the one thing that connects your heart

  393. and your head

  394. and your soul.

  395. And Simeon sings

  396. and praises the Lord with these words,

  397. Lord,

  398. now you are letting your servant depart in peace

  399. according to your word.

  400. For my eyes have seen your salvation

  401. that you have prepared

  402. in the presence of all peoples

  403. a light for the revelation

  404. to the Gentiles

  405. and for glory

  406. to your people Israel.

  407. Now this is a radical song.

  408. I mean,

  409. if this had been playing over the loudspeakers

  410. at the temple,

  411. it would have been banned.

  412. And that's the reason why we know

  413. it's from the Holy Spirit.

  414. This is not something that he picked up

  415. at the temple.

  416. Salvation was for the Jews,

  417. not the Gentiles.

  418. He then turns and prophesies to Mary.

  419. We're told in verse 33

  420. that Mary marveled

  421. at these words.

  422. Mary has been witnessing miraculous event

  423. after miraculous event.

  424. And when she recounts these words

  425. to the beloved Dr. Luke,

  426. who is writing this down for us,

  427. she recalls these words,

  428. Behold,

  429. this child is appointed

  430. for the fall and rising

  431. of many in Israel

  432. and for a sign that is opposed.

  433. A sword will pierce through

  434. your own soul also,

  435. so that thoughts from many hearts

  436. may be revealed.

  437. Simeon tells her

  438. that not only is your son

  439. going to be opposed,

  440. but some of this opposition

  441. is going to spill over

  442. onto you.

  443. Simeon's prophecy

  444. is as true today

  445. as it was

  446. when Simeon uttered it.

  447. As I drive around

  448. Colorado Springs,

  449. I see lots of the little fishes

  450. on the back of cars.

  451. I also see

  452. the little fish

  453. with the feet

  454. coming out of it

  455. with Darwin written

  456. in the middle of it.

  457. I've seen the little fish

  458. taken away on UFOs.

  459. I saw one fish

  460. in the mouth

  461. of a Tyrannosaurus Rex

  462. with Evolution

  463. written on the side of it.

  464. I don't see

  465. the Muslim

  466. or the Islamic scales

  467. treated that way.

  468. It's because

  469. Simeon's prophecy is

  470. Christ will be opposed,

  471. not Muhammad.

  472. And if you don't think

  473. that Christ is oppressed

  474. even today,

  475. please see me

  476. after the sermon

  477. so I can inform you

  478. of what's going on

  479. in China.

  480. Christ is opposed

  481. even today.

  482. And as Mary

  483. is thinking

  484. as she's telling Luke

  485. and Luke is writing

  486. this down

  487. and she's remembering

  488. these words

  489. that Simeon

  490. has told her

  491. about how Christ

  492. is going to be opposed

  493. and it's even

  494. going to pierce

  495. her soul.

  496. At the time

  497. it would have been

  498. like taking

  499. your infant child

  500. to the doctor

  501. and the doctor

  502. saying,

  503. yes,

  504. there's something wrong.

  505. We'll just have

  506. to wait and see.

  507. And the anxiety

  508. that that carries

  509. with it.

  510. But don't you think

  511. as she is relating

  512. this to Luke

  513. after the resurrection,

  514. the twinkle in her eye

  515. as she has been comforted

  516. by her resurrected son,

  517. the Savior of the world,

  518. don't you think

  519. that she had

  520. a little bit

  521. of a grin

  522. as she is recounting

  523. this to Luke?

  524. So,

  525. we've looked at

  526. Mary and Joseph's

  527. obedience.

  528. We've looked at

  529. Simeon's prophecy

  530. and his psalm.

  531. Anna.

  532. So,

  533. now we turn

  534. our attention

  535. to the fifth

  536. character of this

  537. story,

  538. Anna.

  539. In these three

  540. verses,

  541. we're told about

  542. Anna's lineage.

  543. We're told that

  544. she was the daughter

  545. of Phanuel,

  546. of the tribe

  547. of Asher.

  548. We're told that

  549. she was old.

  550. Not that it matters,

  551. but I tend to side

  552. with I.H.

  553. Marshall on this

  554. that the 84 years

  555. means that she

  556. was a widow

  557. for 84.

  558. It's not important

  559. other than

  560. she's between

  561. 84 and 103

  562. years old.

  563. She's old.

  564. And at this time,

  565. that's not unheard

  566. of,

  567. but not common.

  568. So,

  569. if you and I

  570. were walking

  571. down the streets

  572. of Jerusalem

  573. and I said

  574. the old woman

  575. at the temple,

  576. more than likely,

  577. we both knew

  578. who we were

  579. talking about.

  580. And you have

  581. to ask yourself,

  582. why are all

  583. these details

  584. in here?

  585. And the reason

  586. that,

  587. because they don't

  588. move the narrative

  589. forward,

  590. they don't move

  591. the story forward,

  592. why are these

  593. details here?

  594. And the answer

  595. is,

  596. Luke doesn't

  597. want to entertain

  598. us,

  599. he wants to

  600. be accurate

  601. with the

  602. information.

  603. When you see

  604. details like this

  605. in here,

  606. it's proof that

  607. the Bible is

  608. true.

  609. So,

  610. Anna,

  611. confronted with

  612. the Christ

  613. child,

  614. the Savior,

  615. the Messiah,

  616. her response

  617. is different.

  618. Her response

  619. is,

  620. the same

  621. response that

  622. we all have

  623. when we

  624. encounter

  625. something that

  626. moves us.

  627. We want to

  628. tell people

  629. about it.

  630. If you eat

  631. a meal at a

  632. good restaurant

  633. downtown,

  634. some of us

  635. take a picture

  636. of it and

  637. post it on

  638. Facebook.

  639. If you hear

  640. a song that

  641. just moves you,

  642. you download it

  643. and email it

  644. to people.

  645. When you

  646. take a picture

  647. that just

  648. excites you,

  649. you put it

  650. on Instagram,

  651. Anna is

  652. not any

  653. different.

  654. The only

  655. thing different

  656. is the

  657. technology.

  658. She immediately

  659. rushes out to

  660. those people

  661. that are waiting

  662. on the redemption

  663. of Jerusalem

  664. and says,

  665. guess what?

  666. He's here.

  667. her.

  668. She's excited.

  669. So here we

  670. are, five

  671. days after

  672. Christmas.

  673. Presents have

  674. been unwrapped.

  675. You're hopefully

  676. enjoying them.

  677. But did

  678. Christmas this

  679. year live up

  680. to the hype?

  681. Was it

  682. everything that

  683. you thought it

  684. would be?

  685. You see,

  686. when we get

  687. angry or we

  688. get frustrated

  689. or we're sad,

  690. it's because of

  691. unrealized

  692. expectations.

  693. We set up in

  694. our minds

  695. how the

  696. event or the

  697. activity or

  698. the holiday is

  699. going to go.

  700. And if things

  701. don't go exactly

  702. the way that we

  703. have them laid

  704. out in our

  705. mind, we tend

  706. to go,

  707. yeah, it was

  708. great.

  709. It just didn't

  710. go the way I

  711. thought it

  712. would.

  713. Anna and

  714. Simeon were

  715. waiting with

  716. expectation for

  717. the Messiah.

  718. They were

  719. waiting on the

  720. Savior and they

  721. were open to

  722. God's provision.

  723. Anna and

  724. Simeon placed

  725. their hope in

  726. God.

  727. Those that had

  728. gathered at the

  729. temple looking

  730. for the

  731. Redeemer of

  732. Jerusalem were

  733. putting their

  734. hope into a

  735. warrior, not a

  736. five-week-old

  737. infant.

  738. The people

  739. gathered there

  740. at the temple

  741. were paying

  742. attention.

  743. They were

  744. waiting expectantly,

  745. just like Anna and

  746. Simeon.

  747. But they put

  748. their hope in

  749. the wrong

  750. thing.

  751. They missed

  752. it because

  753. Jesus wasn't

  754. what they were

  755. expecting.

  756. Anna and

  757. Simeon point

  758. to the one

  759. thing that you

  760. can put your

  761. hope in that

  762. will not

  763. disappoint.

  764. There is

  765. someone who

  766. will not let

  767. you down.

  768. He is the

  769. gift of the

  770. world.

  771. Christmas is the

  772. holiday that

  773. marks when he

  774. came in the

  775. flesh.

  776. As we sing at

  777. Christmas,

  778. incarnate.

  779. He came to

  780. this earth as

  781. a real person

  782. because it

  783. takes a real

  784. person to

  785. save real

  786. people.

  787. He lived the

  788. perfect sinless

  789. life that we

  790. cannot.

  791. He died on a

  792. cross to pay

  793. for all of our

  794. sins.

  795. Let that sink

  796. in.

  797. He paid for

  798. every sin

  799. that you

  800. ever committed

  801. and every

  802. sin that you

  803. are ever

  804. going to

  805. commit.

  806. Everything that

  807. you're going

  808. to do wrong

  809. or that you

  810. should have

  811. done right

  812. died with

  813. Christ on

  814. that cross.

  815. If you are

  816. in Christ

  817. Jesus,

  818. your account

  819. is now

  820. marked

  821. paid in

  822. full.

  823. And the

  824. reason we

  825. know that

  826. the check

  827. cleared is

  828. because on

  829. the third

  830. day he set

  831. aside the

  832. grave clothes,

  833. moved the

  834. rock, and

  835. stepped out

  836. of the tomb.

  837. This is the

  838. Messiah Simeon

  839. and Anna were

  840. waiting on.

  841. This is the

  842. Messiah they

  843. had placed their

  844. hope in.

  845. gift.

  846. This is why

  847. when they

  848. encountered

  849. Christ they

  850. sang and

  851. they rejoiced.

  852. This is the

  853. gift that they

  854. could not wait

  855. to share with

  856. others.

  857. Christmas is

  858. over and we

  859. have received

  860. the greatest

  861. gift ever.

  862. And I

  863. implore you,

  864. I beg you,

  865. enjoy him.

  866. Let's pray.

  867. Father, we

  868. thank you,

  869. especially during

  870. this season,

  871. for the gift of

  872. your son,

  873. Jesus Christ.

  874. Your son,

  875. the servant who

  876. appeared not in

  877. power or as a

  878. warrior or as a

  879. conqueror.

  880. He came in the

  881. form of a

  882. helpless babe,

  883. born in

  884. humility to

  885. proclaim peace.

  886. The servant who

  887. set aside the

  888. honor due him

  889. in his name,

  890. came to

  891. redeem us.

  892. Not because of

  893. anything we had

  894. done, no,

  895. while we were

  896. still sinners and

  897. even worse,

  898. enemies of God.

  899. Christ suffered

  900. and went to the

  901. cross for us.

  902. Such was the

  903. Father, Son, and

  904. Holy Spirit's love

  905. for us.

  906. This is the true

  907. story of Christmas

  908. that we love to

  909. hear season after

  910. season.

  911. That the Father

  912. loved us so much,

  913. he sent his

  914. son in human

  915. form to do

  916. what Adam could

  917. not, to live a

  918. perfect life, to

  919. die on our

  920. behalf, and to

  921. say on the cross,

  922. it is finished.

  923. Amen.
