  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Jeff Kreisel.

  3. For those who haven't met me before, I'm the RUF campus minister at the Air Force Academy.

  4. I'm also an Army Reserve chaplain out here at Fort Carson.

  5. It's my joy to be here this morning to bring God's word to God's people here at Cheyenne

  6. Mountain Presbyterian Church and on the first Sunday of 2019.

  7. So happy new year.

  8. You know, everyone approaches the new year very differently.

  9. Some people throw parties.

  10. They pop champagne.

  11. They put on those cheesy New Year's glasses, you know, like the ones that are made with

  12. the numbers.

  13. They're so cheesy.

  14. Don't wear those.

  15. Other people, they're indifferent.

  16. They head to bed at 9 p.m.

  17. They open a book.

  18. They put on their reading glasses.

  19. They don't really care so much for the party.

  20. Some people are really optimistic.

  21. Some people are really pessimistic.

  22. Some people go into the new year knowing pretty much exactly what to expect.

  23. Other people, they have no idea what the next year will hold.

  24. I think of the soldiers here at Fort Carson that are deploying this next month.

  25. Some for the first time.

  26. They have no idea what this next year will hold.

  27. Some people love to make idealistic New Year's resolutions.

  28. Like, this year I'm going to lose 100 pounds.

  29. I'm going to swim with dolphins.

  30. I'm going to climb Mount Everest or maybe Pikes Peak or something.

  31. I'm like, all right, buddy.

  32. We'll see.

  33. Other people don't make resolutions.

  34. They are completely content with their familiar routines.

  35. They are thinking, if it ain't broke, why fix it?

  36. And finally, there are some people who treat the New Year as like their year of atonement.

  37. They treat it as like their fresh start.

  38. As if like the mere shift from one year to the next has the power to cover your sins and cover all of your burdens.

  39. They think to themselves, I really made a mess out of my life in 2018.

  40. But now I have a blank slate.

  41. I have a fresh start.

  42. 2019.

  43. Yes.

  44. In 2019, all of my 2018 mistakes are behind me.

  45. They're gone.

  46. Others, on the other hand, they view the New Year as their year of judgment.

  47. They think to themselves, my good luck is going to run out in 2019.

  48. They think to themselves, this is the year that I'm exposed.

  49. This is the year that people find out who I really am.

  50. This is the year that I'm exposed as a poor spouse or a bad parent or a dishonest employee or a hypocritical Christian.

  51. This is the year.

  52. In 2019, all of my 28 mistakes are going to be revealed.

  53. And far too often, we view these two approaches as our only options as we head into the New Year.

  54. We either treat the New Year as our savior.

  55. And so we try to put all of our mistakes and our burdens on its back.

  56. Burdens that a year can't handle, that a year can't carry.

  57. Or we treat the New Year as a judge.

  58. So we try to hide our sins from the bench of the New Year.

  59. But once again, these are sins that a year cannot judge.

  60. Our passage this morning gives us a third option.

  61. A better option.

  62. An option that invites us to follow the savior and the judge of every year.

  63. The one who sees our sins from the bench, yet bore our burdens on the cross.

  64. The one who changes our New Year's resolutions.

  65. And the one who changes our daily Christian rhythm.

  66. Okay.

  67. So we'll be looking at Luke 5, verses 1-11.

    Luke 5:1–11

  68. And if you are willing and able, I invite you to stand for the reading of God's holy, inspired, and sufficient word for us this morning.

  69. Luke 5, verses 1-11.

    Luke 5:1–11

  70. And let's read about this rhythm.

  71. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,

  72. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.

  73. And Simon answered,

  74. Master, we toiled all night and took nothing.

  75. But at your word, I will let down the nets.

  76. And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish.

  77. And their nets were breaking.

  78. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.

  79. And they came and filled both the boats so that they began to sink.

  80. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying,

  81. Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

  82. For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken.

  83. And so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.

  84. And Jesus said to Simon,

  85. Do not be afraid.

  86. From now on you will be catching men.

  87. And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

  88. Let me pray.

  89. Gracious and good Heavenly Father,

  90. we pray that your Holy Spirit will move in our midst this morning,

  91. that you will convict us where we need to be convicted.

  92. Teach us what we don't know.

  93. Encourage us where we need to be encouraged.

  94. We pray, Lord, that you will evangelize the deepest parts of our hearts

  95. that need to be reached with the gospel.

  96. Thank you for Jesus, for his work on the cross.

  97. And it's through his name we pray. Amen.

  98. You may be seated.

  99. In our family, there is no clear line between religion and fishing.

  100. This is the first sentence in one of my favorite books of all time,

  101. A River Runs Through It.

  102. Or if you're a movie fan, in 1992, Brad Pitt.

  103. It's an awesome movie.

  104. If you haven't seen it, go see it.

  105. A River Runs Through It.

  106. It's by a guy named Norman Maclean.

  107. It's a semi-autobiographical book.

  108. The book is about two rebellious brothers named Norman and Paul.

  109. And these two boys, they just happen to be the sons of the town's Presbyterian minister.

  110. And so, like every good Presbyterian child here this morning,

  111. these boys spent a great deal of their time memorizing and reciting the Westminster Shorter Catechism.

  112. So much fun, right?

  113. But between their study sessions, their father would give them a different sort of instruction.

  114. He would take them to the nearest river, and he would fly fish with his boys.

  115. On the banks of the big Blackfoot River in western Montana, these wild boys,

  116. they learned their father's four-count fly fishing rhythm as he clapped his hands behind their head

  117. like a dance choreographer.

  118. One, two, three, four, while they fish.

  119. You see, their father was a master fisherman.

  120. And he was teaching his sons his master fishing rhythm.

  121. But their dad wasn't only a master fisherman.

  122. He was also a master Presbyterian.

  123. So he knew that his boys were by nature a complete mess.

  124. Their hearts were corrupt.

  125. They were stubborn.

  126. They were full of pride.

  127. They thought they knew what was best.

  128. And so their father knew that his sons would try to create their own rhythm.

  129. And that's exactly what they did.

  130. The boys thought they could fish however they wanted to fish.

  131. They could create their own rhythm.

  132. However, they soon found out that their rhythm didn't result in many fish.

  133. And so day after day, Norman and Paul, they would fail to catch any fish.

  134. And they would get frustrated.

  135. They would get irritated with both their father and the fish.

  136. You see, without their father's four-count fishing rhythm, fishing wasn't fun.

  137. It wasn't fun.

  138. It brought them no joy.

  139. In fact, fishing became a burden to the boys.

  140. But over time, they began to follow their father's instruction.

  141. And soon enough, his four-count rhythm became their four-count rhythm.

  142. And they, too, became master fishermen, just like their dad.

  143. In our passage this morning, Luke takes us to the banks of the Sea of Galilee.

  144. And he teaches us the four-count fishing rhythm of our Heavenly Father for the Christian life.

  145. But like Norman and Paul, we think we know best.

  146. We're stubborn.

  147. We're full of pride.

  148. We think that we can create our own rhythm instead.

  149. And as a result, we begin to grow impatient.

  150. We begin to grow impatient with our Heavenly Father.

  151. And we become increasingly irritated with all the fish.

  152. We think to ourselves,

  153. I'm trying.

  154. I really want to be a witness to others.

  155. I want to make disciples of all nations.

  156. I want to be a fisher of men.

  157. I want to see the gospel go out.

  158. But it's not working.

  159. Why would God providentially place all of these people in my life,

  160. whether at home, at work, where I play,

  161. why would he place these people in my life if they don't care about the gospel?

  162. They don't even want to listen.

  163. They don't seem to care.

  164. They don't want to be caught by God's grace.

  165. When a Christian starts to feel like evangelism,

  166. like the Christian life as a whole is more of a burden than a life-giving privilege,

  167. they will try to make their own rhythm instead.

  168. They'll try to come up with their own strategies.

  169. They'll try to come up with their own plans.

  170. And my friends,

  171. in our family,

  172. the church,

  173. the Christian family,

  174. there is no clear line between religion and fishing.

  175. In fact,

  176. I would argue that there is no line at all

  177. between religion and fishing.

  178. To follow means to fish,

  179. and to fish means to follow.

  180. You can't follow Jesus and refuse to fish.

  181. Here's the thing.

  182. You can't fish however you want.

  183. The Christian life has a foundational,

  184. God-given rhythm.

  185. Okay?

  186. And this rhythm must become our rhythm in 2019

  187. if we are to become master fishermen like Jesus in the new year.

  188. All right,

  189. so the one count of this fishing rhythm is to hear God's word.

  190. This is the one count of the Christian rhythm.

  191. We are to be a people who take the same posture as these people,

  192. these Israelites in Luke 5,

  193. people who are pressing into Jesus.

  194. They're pressing into him to hear Jesus speak.

  195. These are people who are hungry for God's word.

  196. They craved it.

  197. They were desperate to be close to Jesus.

  198. So much,

  199. in fact,

  200. that they push Jesus onto a boat.

  201. Jesus has to get on a boat

  202. in order to create some distance,

  203. some separation,

  204. so he can teach them effectively.

  205. These folks were desperate for God's word.

  206. Is this your posture as you head into 2019?

  207. Are you pressing into Jesus?

  208. Is this a part of your daily rhythm?

  209. Do you hunger for God's word?

  210. Are you desperate to be near him?

  211. Do you think that's a part of your life?

  212. Do you think that's a part of your life?

  213. The Christian rhythm always starts with hearing God's word.

  214. Just think back on your conversion, okay?

  215. We live in Colorado Springs.

  216. There's beautiful mountains right behind us.

  217. You didn't come to faith

  218. by simply looking at these beautiful mountains,

  219. and then all of a sudden,

  220. you just came to your senses

  221. and put your faith in a Savior

  222. you had never heard about.

  223. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  224. Those mountains declare the glory of God.

  225. But they are not sufficient to save.

  226. You had to hear God's word first.

  227. You also didn't come to faith

  228. by simply watching another Christian,

  229. be it a parent or a friend,

  230. a sibling, a neighbor,

  231. live this beautiful Christian life.

  232. And it caught your attention.

  233. It caught your attention.

  234. You noticed something about them.

  235. They were living differently.

  236. Maybe you noticed their hospitality

  237. or their generosity

  238. or their purity.

  239. Or maybe you noticed their joy

  240. or their hope.

  241. You noticed something about them,

  242. and it was attractive to you.

  243. And so you came,

  244. and you wanted to start a conversation.

  245. You see, all of those great attributes,

  246. I call it the beautiful life.

  247. The Christian life and the beautiful life

  248. are synonymous terms, by the way.

  249. The Christian life is the beautiful life.

  250. But those attributes that make it beautiful,

  251. they aren't sufficient to save, either,

  252. for brothers just to see it.

  253. They are good conversation starters,

  254. but the conversation still has to happen.

  255. You have to hear God's word.

  256. As Paul writes in Romans 10,

  257. he says,

  258. How are they to believe in him

  259. whom they have never heard,

  260. and how are they to hear

  261. without someone preaching?

  262. Faith comes from hearing,

  263. and hearing through the word of God.

  264. The Christian rhythm always starts

  265. with hearing God's word.

  266. And my friends,

  267. this rhythm is certainly a weekly rhythm.

  268. It is a Sunday rhythm.

  269. We begin our week with God's word,

  270. but it is also a daily rhythm.

  271. And Sunday worship is vitally important.

  272. But what about Monday through Saturday?

  273. You see, in Luke 5,

  274. it was business as usual.

  275. The Sea of Galilee is booming.

  276. There's commerce going on.

  277. In other words,

  278. it most likely was not the Sabbath.

  279. It was an ordinary day.

  280. So here's Jesus,

  281. and he met these folks

  282. where they were,

  283. at their places of work.

  284. He came to them,

  285. and he preached God's word.

  286. So what does that mean for you and me?

  287. It means that we are to be a people

  288. who press into Jesus on a Monday.

  289. When we have a week full of responsibilities

  290. hanging over our head,

  291. we feel like we're drowning.

  292. We are to press into Jesus on a Wednesday

  293. when we feel beat down.

  294. We're to press into Jesus on a Friday

  295. instead of going home

  296. and kicking our shoes off,

  297. sitting on the couch

  298. and vegging out until Sunday morning.

  299. We're to be a people

  300. who press into Jesus Sunday through Saturday

  301. because this one count

  302. is our Christian rhythm.

  303. We are to hear God's word.

  304. Now I want you to imagine for a second

  305. being a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee.

  306. This was the center of the economy,

  307. this sea.

  308. And so the sea was always packed

  309. with fishermen, rain or shine.

  310. Archaeologists have discovered

  311. that there were about 16 ports

  312. on the Sea of Galilee.

  313. And they estimate that there was

  314. anywhere from 150 to 200 fishing boats

  315. on the sea every evening.

  316. In other words, in Luke 5,

  317. Peter wasn't fishing by himself

  318. and he wasn't fishing to have some fun.

  319. This was his livelihood.

  320. He had a family to feed.

  321. He had employees to pay.

  322. This was a big deal.

  323. He didn't catch any fish the night before.

  324. And so you can hear Peter's frustration

  325. when Jesus, this guy that he doesn't really even know,

  326. comes up to him and says,

  327. hey, go fishing again.

  328. But go fish at the worst time of day.

  329. He says, master, but we toiled all night

  330. and we caught nothing.

  331. In other words, he's saying, come on, Jesus.

  332. We're tired.

  333. We're exhausted.

  334. We've been going at this all night

  335. and we haven't caught anything.

  336. And we're experienced fishermen.

  337. And you're a carpenter.

  338. What do you know about fishing?

  339. Have you ever realized or noticed

  340. how strange this little exchange is?

  341. It's really bizarre.

  342. Jesus is a carpenter

  343. and he's from landlocked Nazareth.

  344. Okay?

  345. No seas in sight.

  346. Fishing is not a part of that economy.

  347. And he is now here at the Sea of Galilee

  348. and he's telling these seasoned,

  349. experienced fishermen how to do their jobs.

  350. And it's not like Peter knew Jesus up to this point.

  351. Like up to Luke 5,

  352. Peter and Jesus have had very,

  353. very little interaction with one another.

  354. So just imagine for a second

  355. if someone came into your work,

  356. came into your office,

  357. someone you don't even really know,

  358. and they told you how to do your job.

  359. When I was in the Air Force,

  360. I was an air traffic controller

  361. and I would often give tours

  362. of my air traffic control tower

  363. to various groups

  364. to like build community relations.

  365. Usually it was like Boy Scouts.

  366. Now if I were giving a plane

  367. a control instruction

  368. and one of these visitors

  369. were to say,

  370. you know what?

  371. I really think you should turn that plane

  372. left instead of right.

  373. I probably would have laughed

  374. and then told that visitor

  375. to sit down and keep quiet.

  376. But that's not how Peter responds.

  377. Clearly Peter already knows

  378. that Jesus is different,

  379. that he's more than a carpenter.

  380. And there are many reasons for this,

  381. but perhaps it's because

  382. Peter's current teacher,

  383. John the Baptist,

  384. has told him that he said,

  385. behold the Lamb of God

  386. who takes away the sins of the world.

  387. Or maybe it was because

  388. his brother Andrew

  389. was already convinced

  390. that Jesus was the Messiah.

  391. Or perhaps it was because

  392. he saw Jesus miraculously

  393. heal his mother-in-law.

  394. I'm sure all of these factors

  395. played a part,

  396. but ultimately it came down

  397. to one thing.

  398. Peter heard Jesus' voice.

  399. The incarnate word of God spoke.

  400. And Peter listened and obeyed.

  401. And he says,

  402. at your word,

  403. I will let down the nets.

  404. You see,

  405. it is one thing

  406. to hear

  407. and obey God's word

  408. when it addresses

  409. the areas of your life

  410. that you're not very good at,

  411. that you know you need to improve.

  412. But it is quite another

  413. thing to hear

  414. and obey God's word

  415. in the areas

  416. that you think you know best.

  417. the areas that you excel.

  418. Like how you do your job,

  419. how you treat your employees,

  420. how you raise your kids,

  421. how you have fun.

  422. When Jesus speaks

  423. into these areas of our life,

  424. we are prone to tell him

  425. to sit down and keep quiet.

  426. But my friends,

  427. Jesus is the creator

  428. of all things.

  429. And so he speaks

  430. authoritatively

  431. into every single area

  432. of our life

  433. without exception.

  434. So I urge you

  435. this new year

  436. to press into Jesus

  437. in 2019

  438. like these Israelites

  439. in Luke 5.

  440. Press into his word

  441. every day

  442. and let this become

  443. your one count

  444. of your Christian rhythm

  445. in 2019.

  446. The two count,

  447. repent and believe.

  448. After hearing

  449. the voice of Jesus,

  450. Peter and Andrew,

  451. they let down their nets.

  452. And what happens?

  453. They catch

  454. a miraculous number

  455. of fish,

  456. a crazy number of fish.

  457. So many fish

  458. that their boats

  459. are full.

  460. So they call,

  461. the boat fills,

  462. so they call their buddies

  463. John and James over.

  464. And John and James

  465. start filling up their boat.

  466. And the next thing you know,

  467. their boats are so full

  468. that they're beginning

  469. to sink.

  470. That's a lot of fish.

  471. If this were me,

  472. I think I'd be celebrating

  473. after a night

  474. of catching nothing.

  475. I'd be hooting

  476. and hollering.

  477. I'd be giving high fives.

  478. I'd be doing

  479. that floss thing

  480. that those kids

  481. are doing nowadays.

  482. I'd be like

  483. making plans

  484. to go buy

  485. that new boat

  486. I've been eyeballing.

  487. I'd probably even

  488. offer Jesus a job.

  489. But that's not

  490. how Peter responds.

  491. Peter's mind

  492. wasn't on the fish

  493. or the new boat.

  494. Peter doesn't give

  495. Jesus high fives.

  496. He doesn't offer

  497. Jesus a job.

  498. Instead,

  499. Peter falls

  500. on his face

  501. at the feet

  502. of Jesus

  503. and he cries out,

  504. depart from me

  505. for I am

  506. a sinful man,

  507. O Lord.

  508. That's a shocking

  509. response

  510. to something

  511. so great

  512. as catching

  513. all of these fish.

  514. Is this how

  515. you would respond?

  516. You see,

  517. Peter realized

  518. that the infinitely

  519. powerful

  520. and holy

  521. Son of God

  522. was standing

  523. in his boat.

  524. He was standing

  525. in his boat.

  526. And he realized

  527. that Jesus

  528. was responsible

  529. for catching

  530. every single

  531. one of those fish.

  532. and he also

  533. realized

  534. that he deserved

  535. to be punished.

  536. That he deserved

  537. to die

  538. for his sins

  539. and this makes sense

  540. in the Old Testament

  541. they were expecting

  542. a military Messiah

  543. who was going

  544. to come

  545. and judge.

  546. But on this day

  547. Peter doesn't

  548. find judgment.

  549. He finds

  550. the friend

  551. of sinners.

  552. He finds

  553. the man

  554. who dines

  555. with tax collectors.

  556. He finds

  557. the man

  558. who touches

  559. unclean leopards.

  560. Who hugs

  561. the hopeless.

  562. Who communes

  563. with cripples.

  564. Who heals

  565. the deaf

  566. and the blind.

  567. Who pursues

  568. the outcasts.

  569. And who even

  570. loves

  571. ordinary

  572. middle class

  573. fishermen

  574. like Peter.

  575. As Peter

  576. discovered

  577. on that boat

  578. Jesus

  579. is the friend

  580. of sinners.

  581. But as he

  582. would find out

  583. over the course

  584. of his time

  585. with Jesus

  586. he also

  587. found that

  588. Jesus

  589. does not

  590. absolve

  591. our need

  592. for repentance.

  593. Remember

  594. Jesus is the man

  595. who began

  596. his public

  597. ministry

  598. with the words

  599. repent

  600. for the kingdom

  601. of heaven

  602. is at hand.

  603. The friend

  604. of sinners

  605. does not

  606. absolve

  607. our need

  608. for repentance.

  609. In fact

  610. increased faith

  611. actually produces

  612. increased repentance.

  613. Your repentance

  614. is a reflection

  615. of your faith

  616. and vice versa.

  617. The two

  618. go hand in

  619. hand.

  620. Faith and

  621. repentance

  622. they cannot

  623. be separated.

  624. Faith produces

  625. genuine repentance

  626. and repentance

  627. produces

  628. deeper faith.

  629. So this semester

  630. I'll be preaching

  631. through the book

  632. of John

  633. the gospel

  634. of John

  635. with my students.

  636. So excited.

  637. I love

  638. the book

  639. of John.

  640. It's one

  641. of my favorites

  642. and one

  643. of the reasons

  644. why I love

  645. this gospel

  646. is that

  647. the theme

  648. verb

  649. is this word

  650. believe.

  651. It's John's

  652. favorite verb

  653. in the entire

  654. gospel.

  655. He uses

  656. this verb

  657. 98 times.

  658. It's the third

  659. most used

  660. word in the

  661. gospel behind

  662. Jesus and God.

  663. If you compare

  664. this to the

  665. other gospels

  666. Matthew uses

  667. the word

  668. 14 times

  669. Mark uses

  670. it 11 times

  671. and Luke

  672. uses the word

  673. believe

  674. 9 times.

  675. John uses

  676. this word

  677. four times

  678. as much

  679. as the other

  680. three gospels

  681. combined.

  682. Why does he

  683. focus so much

  684. on this word?

  685. According to

  686. John

  687. believing

  688. in Jesus

  689. is the most

  690. important thing

  691. a person

  692. can do.

  693. It is the

  694. height of

  695. humanity

  696. is belief

  697. in Christ.

  698. Just look

  699. at John's

  700. purpose statement

  701. in John

    John 20 chapter mention

  702. chapter 20.

  703. John

  704. wrote that

  705. if you

  706. were to

  707. take all

  708. the

  709. libraries

  710. in the

  711. entire

  712. world

  713. and put

  714. them

  715. together

  716. they

  717. couldn't

  718. contain

  719. all of

  720. the

  721. signs

  722. and

  723. miracles

  724. that

  725. Jesus

  726. performed

  727. on

  728. earth.

  729. There

  730. aren't

  731. enough

  732. books.

  733. After he

  734. says this

  735. he says

  736. he writes

  737. but these

  738. things are

  739. written

  740. so that

  741. you may

  742. believe

  743. that

  744. Jesus

  745. is the

  746. Christ

  747. the

  748. son

  749. of

  750. God

  751. and

  752. that

  753. by

  754. believing

  755. you

  756. may

  757. have

  758. life

  759. in

  760. his

  761. name.

  762. Belief

  763. in

  764. Jesus

  765. changes

  766. everything.

  767. It changes

  768. everything

  769. as we head

  770. into the

  771. new year.

  772. It changes

  773. our

  774. resolutions.

  775. It changes

  776. our

  777. rhythm.

  778. It is my

  779. prayer that the

  780. Holy Spirit

  781. will press

  782. this truth

  783. into us

  784. this year.

  785. Because here's

  786. the thing.

  787. I know

  788. that 2019

  789. there will

  790. be days

  791. when believing

  792. is hard.

  793. There will

  794. be days

  795. when we

  796. are ridiculed

  797. for our

  798. faith.

  799. There will

  800. be days

  801. when it

  802. would be

  803. easier to

  804. stay silent.

  805. There will

  806. be days

  807. when the

  808. valley seems

  809. so deep

  810. and the

  811. mountain

  812. seems

  813. unreachable.

  814. There will

  815. be days

  816. when your

  817. only prayer

  818. is I

  819. believe

  820. help my

  821. unbelief.

  822. There will

  823. be days

  824. in 2019

  825. where we

  826. struggle

  827. to believe

  828. and this

  829. is why

  830. the two

  831. count

  832. of the

  833. Christian

  834. rhythm

  835. is so

  836. important.

  837. Repent

  838. and believe.

  839. This is

  840. our rhythm.

  841. It's not

  842. a one and

  843. done thing.

  844. You see

  845. if repentance

  846. and belief

  847. are not

  848. your two

  849. count,

  850. if they're

  851. not a

  852. part of

  853. your

  854. rhythm,

  855. you'll

  856. start to

  857. fish like

  858. Norman and

  859. Paul.

  860. Norman and

  861. Paul thought

  862. they were

  863. really great

  864. fishermen,

  865. all the while

  866. failing to

  867. catch any

  868. fish.

  869. Even when

  870. things were

  871. great,

  872. even when

  873. his boat

  874. was sinking

  875. with fish,

  876. Peter repented

  877. and he turned

  878. to Jesus

  879. in faith.

  880. This is our

  881. rhythm in

  882. 2019.

  883. The three

  884. count,

  885. embrace

  886. your

  887. commission.

  888. So here

  889. is Peter,

  890. his face

  891. is on

  892. the floor

  893. at the

  894. feet of

  895. Jesus

  896. and Peter

  897. is given

  898. a new

  899. mission.

  900. He's given

  901. a new

  902. purpose in

  903. life.

  904. Jesus

  905. says to

  906. Peter,

  907. he says,

  908. from now

  909. on you

  910. will be

  911. catching

  912. men.

  913. You see,

  914. Peter was

  915. commissioned

  916. by Jesus

  917. to go

  918. fishing.

  919. So one

  920. of the

  921. unique

  922. aspects of

  923. working at

  924. the Air

  925. Force Academy

  926. is that

  927. when my

  928. students

  929. graduate,

  930. they all

  931. receive a

  932. presidential

  933. commission.

  934. They become

  935. commissioned

  936. officers.

  937. They become

  938. second

  939. lieutenants.

  940. Now this

  941. word,

  942. commission,

  943. it comes

  944. from two

  945. Latin words

  946. and it

  947. literally

  948. means to

  949. send

  950. with.

  951. To send

  952. with.

  953. So when

  954. my cadets

  955. graduate,

  956. they are

  957. literally

  958. being sent

  959. with the

  960. authority of

  961. another.

  962. They are

  963. being sent

  964. with another's

  965. authority.

  966. They are

  967. being entrusted

  968. with another's

  969. authority.

  970. You see,

  971. in and of

  972. themselves,

  973. there isn't a

  974. single officer

  975. in the United

  976. States military

  977. that has any

  978. power in and

  979. of themselves.

  980. It is a

  981. derived

  982. authority.

  983. Due to

  984. their commission,

  985. they are able

  986. to command

  987. others.

  988. because of

  989. the president's

  990. authority

  991. entrusted

  992. to them.

  993. And the

  994. same is

  995. true for

  996. you and

  997. I as

  998. Christians,

  999. but at

  1000. an infinitely

  1001. higher scale.

  1002. We're not

  1003. talking about

  1004. a presidential

  1005. commission.

  1006. We're talking

  1007. about a

  1008. commission

  1009. from the

  1010. God of

  1011. the universe.

  1012. That is a

  1013. humbling

  1014. reality.

  1015. That's a

  1016. humbling

  1017. commission

  1018. to receive.

  1019. Just like

  1020. Peter,

  1021. every Christian

  1022. throughout human

  1023. history has

  1024. been commissioned

  1025. by Christ

  1026. to go

  1027. fishing.

  1028. Jesus says,

  1029. from now

  1030. on you,

  1031. all of you,

  1032. from now

  1033. on you,

  1034. we'll be

  1035. catching men.

  1036. my friends,

  1037. you have been

  1038. commissioned by

  1039. Christ to

  1040. go fishing.

  1041. And as a

  1042. result, you

  1043. are sent with

  1044. his authority.

  1045. You're entrusted

  1046. with his

  1047. authority to

  1048. make disciples

  1049. of all nations,

  1050. to go fishing

  1051. for men.

  1052. Practically

  1053. speaking, what does

  1054. this mean?

  1055. What does this look

  1056. like as we head

  1057. into the new

  1058. year?

  1059. Well, in my

  1060. humble opinion,

  1061. far too many

  1062. Christians

  1063. overcomplicate

  1064. evangelism.

  1065. We make it

  1066. way harder

  1067. than it actually

  1068. is.

  1069. Many think

  1070. that they have

  1071. to take an

  1072. apologetics

  1073. course,

  1074. or they have

  1075. to have a

  1076. seminary degree,

  1077. or they have

  1078. to be a

  1079. Christian for

  1080. a certain

  1081. period of

  1082. time,

  1083. blah,

  1084. blah,

  1085. blah,

  1086. blah,

  1087. blah.

  1088. All those

  1089. things are

  1090. important,

  1091. don't get

  1092. me wrong.

  1093. But what I've

  1094. found is that

  1095. many Christians

  1096. use these

  1097. things and

  1098. other things

  1099. as like a

  1100. wall to

  1101. hide behind.

  1102. We'll find

  1103. any excuse

  1104. not to pursue

  1105. evangelism.

  1106. And I get it.

  1107. I have fallen

  1108. into that

  1109. snare a lot.

  1110. Evangelism

  1111. really isn't

  1112. that complicated.

  1113. You can read

  1114. all the evangelism

  1115. books in the

  1116. world.

  1117. But it really

  1118. is not that

  1119. complicated.

  1120. Here's the

  1121. thing,

  1122. when you

  1123. love something,

  1124. when you

  1125. really love

  1126. something,

  1127. evangelism is

  1128. just the

  1129. natural overflow.

  1130. It just

  1131. pours out.

  1132. And this

  1133. goes for more

  1134. than just the

  1135. Christian faith,

  1136. for Christian

  1137. evangelism,

  1138. this goes for

  1139. everything.

  1140. Everyone is an

  1141. evangelist for

  1142. something.

  1143. Everyone,

  1144. with no

  1145. exceptions.

  1146. Be it their

  1147. favorite sports

  1148. team,

  1149. be it their

  1150. political party,

  1151. be it their

  1152. essential oils,

  1153. they're like,

  1154. goodness.

  1155. Oh,

  1156. CrossFit,

  1157. holy smokes,

  1158. you want to see

  1159. some good

  1160. evangelism?

  1161. Meet a

  1162. CrossFitter.

  1163. Those guys

  1164. know evangelism

  1165. because they

  1166. love it.

  1167. Evangelism

  1168. comes really

  1169. easy.

  1170. When the

  1171. message you

  1172. love,

  1173. you want

  1174. others to

  1175. have an

  1176. experience as

  1177. well.

  1178. Last year,

  1179. the movie

  1180. Black Panther,

  1181. it became

  1182. the second

  1183. highest grossing

  1184. four-day

  1185. opening in

  1186. movie history.

  1187. It racked in

  1188. $242 million

  1189. in only four

  1190. days.

  1191. And I did

  1192. some research,

  1193. I was just

  1194. wondering,

  1195. why did this

  1196. movie,

  1197. I mean,

  1198. it was great,

  1199. I loved it,

  1200. but why did

  1201. this movie do

  1202. so well?

  1203. And in a

  1204. word,

  1205. evangelism.

  1206. people in

  1207. droves were

  1208. coming out of

  1209. the movie

  1210. theater and

  1211. they couldn't

  1212. help but tell

  1213. their friends

  1214. and family

  1215. about how

  1216. great this

  1217. movie was and

  1218. that they had

  1219. to go see

  1220. it.

  1221. They felt

  1222. compelled to

  1223. proclaim the

  1224. good news of

  1225. this movie,

  1226. Black Panther,

  1227. with the hope

  1228. that others

  1229. would go see

  1230. it and

  1231. experience the

  1232. same joy.

  1233. As Christians,

  1234. we have the

  1235. greatest news

  1236. to share with

  1237. the world.

  1238. It doesn't get

  1239. any better than

  1240. the gospel.

  1241. This news is so

  1242. much better than

  1243. any movie,

  1244. than any

  1245. essential oil or

  1246. CrossFit gym or

  1247. political party or

  1248. sports team,

  1249. all the things

  1250. that we are

  1251. naturally evangelists

  1252. for.

  1253. The gospel is so

  1254. much better

  1255. here.

  1256. Jesus defeated

  1257. sin, death, and

  1258. the devil for

  1259. you.

  1260. Because of

  1261. Jesus, God has

  1262. adopted you into

  1263. his family and

  1264. he calls you his

  1265. child.

  1266. Through faith in

  1267. Christ, God

  1268. loves you and

  1269. he's for you.

  1270. And nothing can

  1271. separate you from

  1272. the love of God

  1273. in Christ Jesus.

  1274. Nothing.

  1275. My friends,

  1276. there is nothing

  1277. that will give

  1278. your friends and

  1279. family more joy

  1280. than the gospel.

  1281. So don't

  1282. overcomplicate it.

  1283. Just give him

  1284. Jesus.

  1285. You'll fail.

  1286. Let the Holy

  1287. Spirit do his

  1288. thing.

  1289. Listen,

  1290. Christians who

  1291. wait for the

  1292. perfect moment

  1293. to evangelize,

  1294. to share their

  1295. faith, they will

  1296. likely never share

  1297. their faith.

  1298. There's no perfect

  1299. moments.

  1300. Christians who

  1301. wait for the

  1302. most effective

  1303. strategy to

  1304. share their

  1305. faith, they'll

  1306. likely never

  1307. share their

  1308. faith.

  1309. There's no

  1310. perfect strategy.

  1311. And Christians

  1312. who are waiting

  1313. to reach some

  1314. elusive degree

  1315. of sanctification,

  1316. like they have

  1317. to hit some

  1318. holiness mark,

  1319. they'll likely

  1320. never share their

  1321. faith because

  1322. you'll never be

  1323. fully sanctified in

  1324. this life.

  1325. My friends, the

  1326. best evangelists

  1327. are those who

  1328. love the gospel.

  1329. people.

  1330. In 2019, don't

  1331. overcomplicate

  1332. evangelism.

  1333. Through faith in

  1334. Christ, you have

  1335. already been

  1336. commissioned by

  1337. God to go

  1338. fishing.

  1339. You've already

  1340. been entrusted

  1341. with his

  1342. authority.

  1343. We are to

  1344. joyfully and

  1345. eagerly embrace

  1346. this commission

  1347. in 2019 because

  1348. this is our

  1349. three count.

  1350. This is our

  1351. rhythm.

  1352. All right, our

  1353. four count,

  1354. leave everything

  1355. and follow Jesus.

  1356. In the book,

  1357. a river runs

  1358. through it.

  1359. The four count

  1360. is described as

  1361. the hardest

  1362. count in the

  1363. entire rhythm.

  1364. And it's the

  1365. rhythm that, it's

  1366. the count that

  1367. throws off the

  1368. entire rhythm, if

  1369. you don't do it

  1370. correctly.

  1371. In the book, to

  1372. perform the four

  1373. count, you had to

  1374. muster like all of

  1375. your strength and

  1376. you had to propel

  1377. your rod forward

  1378. with everything you

  1379. got.

  1380. You had to give

  1381. it your all.

  1382. And I think the

  1383. four count of the

  1384. Christian rhythm is

  1385. also the hardest

  1386. count.

  1387. It's the count that

  1388. throws us off.

  1389. It throws off the

  1390. entire rhythm.

  1391. You see, we may

  1392. have heard God's

  1393. word, we repent

  1394. and believe, we

  1395. embrace our

  1396. commission, but when

1397. it comes time to go

  1398. fishing, we just

  1399. give it a little

  1400. wrist flick.

  1401. We don't put our

  1402. all into it.

  1403. Our passage this

  1404. morning, this last

  1405. sentence, it ends in

  1406. such a radical way.

  1407. Such a radical way,

  1408. it should shock us

  1409. out of complacency,

  1410. out of the

  1411. temptation to be

  1412. complacent.

  1413. It should shock us.

  1414. It says, and when

  1415. they had brought

  1416. their boats to land,

  1417. they left everything

  1418. and followed Jesus.

  1419. You see, the four

  1420. count, it demands

  1421. your all.

  1422. It doesn't just

  1423. demand some of

  1424. your all.

  1425. The text doesn't

  1426. say, and they

  1427. left almost

  1428. everything and

  1429. followed Jesus.

  1430. And that's why this

  1431. is such a difficult

  1432. count.

  1433. Paul writes in

  1434. Philippians 3,

    Philippians 3:8

  1435. verse 8, he says,

  1436. I count everything

  1437. as loss because of

  1438. the surpassing

  1439. worth of knowing

  1440. Jesus Christ my

  1441. Lord.

1442. For his sake I have

  1443. suffered the loss

  1444. of all things and

  1445. count them as

  1446. rubbish in order

  1447. that I may gain

  1448. Christ and be found

  1449. in him.

  1450. Brothers and

  1451. sisters, the

  1452. Christian life is

  1453. not easy.

  1454. Leaving everything

  1455. and following Jesus

  1456. is not easy.

  1457. And here's why.

  1458. Christianity is

  1459. unlike any other

  1460. religion.

  1461. religion.

  1462. Every other

  1463. religion says

  1464. give some or

  1465. give much.

  1466. Maybe even

  1467. they'll go as

  1468. far as saying

  1469. give most.

  1470. Christianity

  1471. says give all.

  1472. Give all.

  1473. Christianity

  1474. says leave

  1475. everything and

  1476. follow Jesus.

  1477. And I know

  1478. this is a

  1479. daunting reality.

  1480. This is an

  1481. intimidating

  1482. charge to leave

  1483. everything to

  1484. follow Jesus.

  1485. To leave, for me

  1486. in particular, to

  1487. leave all of the

  1488. counterfeit gods that

  1489. I think love me.

1490. To leave all of the

  1491. idols of my heart

  1492. that I think I love.

  1493. To leave my

  1494. self-centric pursuit

  1495. of comfort and

  1496. security,

  1497. which I often use

  1498. at the expense of

  1499. others.

  1500. to leave my

  1501. pursuit of glory to

  1502. proclaim God's

  1503. glory.

  1504. There's nothing

  1505. easy about this.

  1506. Yet there's nothing

  1507. more life-giving.

1508. For in the midst of

  1509. our doubt and our

  1510. fear,

  1511. Jesus gives us the

  1512. same comforting words

  1513. that he gave to

  1514. Peter in Luke 5.

  1515. He says to each

  1516. one of us,

  1517. he says,

  1518. don't be afraid.

  1519. He says,

  1520. don't be afraid.

  1521. I'm with you

  1522. and I'm for you

  1523. in 2019.

  1524. Don't be afraid.

  1525. I will never leave

  1526. you or forsake you.

  1527. Don't be afraid.

  1528. I know you'll fail.

  1529. I know you won't

  1530. leave everything.

  1531. And that's why I

  1532. left everything for you.

  1533. I gave all to

  1534. redeem you from

  1535. the power of sin

  1536. and death.

  1537. I gave all to

  1538. free you from the

  1539. bondage of sin.

  1540. I gave all to

  1541. free you from your

  1542. guilt and shame.

  1543. I gave all to

  1544. reconcile you to

  1545. your heavenly

  1546. father.

  1547. I did it.

  1548. I gave everything.

  1549. I gave all so

  1550. that you could go

  1551. fishing.

  1552. I gave all to

  1553. you.

  1554. He said,

  1555. don't be afraid.

  1556. To follow Jesus

  1557. means to fish for

  1558. Jesus.

  1559. And therefore,

  1560. God's rhythm

  1561. must become our

  1562. rhythm in 2019.

  1563. This is a rhythm

  1564. of hearing God's

  1565. word,

  1566. repenting and

  1567. believing the

  1568. gospel,

  1569. embracing our

  1570. commission to fish

  1571. for souls,

  1572. and a rhythm of

  1573. leaving everything

  1574. to follow Jesus.

  1575. This is our

  1576. rhythm.

  1577. So welcome to

  1578. 2019.

  1579. Let's make it a

  1580. year that we

  1581. fish.

  1582. Amen.

  1583. Heavenly Father,

  1584. thank you for your

  1585. word this morning.

  1586. Thank you for Luke

  1587. 5.

  1588. Thank you for our

  1589. commission.

  1590. We don't take it

  1591. lightly.

  1592. We know that you

  1593. have entrusted to

  1594. us a great deal,

  1595. and we pray,

  1596. Lord, that we

  1597. will boldly tell

  1598. others of our

  1599. faith, of the

  1600. good news of

  1601. Jesus Christ,

  1602. that the joy of

  1603. the gospel will

  1604. overflow, that we

  1605. will be unable to

  1606. contain our joy for

  1607. the gospel.

  1608. We pray, Lord,

  1609. that you will use

  1610. these words for your

  1611. infinite purposes.

  1612. Thank you.

  1613. Amen.

  1614. Amen.

  1615. Amen.

  1616. Amen.

  1617. Amen.

  1618. Amen.

  1619. Amen.

  1620. Amen.

  1621. Amen.

  1622. Amen.

  1623. Amen.

  1624. Amen.

  1625. Amen.

  1626. Amen.

  1627. Amen.

  1628. Amen.

  1629. Amen.

  1630. Amen.

  1631. Amen.

  1632. Amen.

  1633. Amen.
