  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church

  3. and it's our joy to have you with us today.

  4. Special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  5. We are glad you're here.

  6. And we're glad you're here not because we are trying to fill seats

  7. but because we are following after Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow after Jesus we are convinced that there's no one so good

  9. that they don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  10. And so God has something to say to everyone in his word

  11. and everyone needs to hear what God has to say to us.

  12. If you've been with us you know that we have recently started the book of Nehemiah

  13. and the book of Nehemiah is a book first about a man who's named Nehemiah.

  14. It's a man who lived in the 5th century in the Old Testament

  15. the time when God's people was known as the nation of Israel.

  16. And as we saw in chapter 1 this man came to a place of great repentance

  17. because he saw the ways in which God's people had abandoned God's mission.

  18. Nehemiah repented of his involvement in that his failures

  19. as well as the failures of the people he led

  20. because he saw that the city that God had given to his people

  21. the city of Jerusalem which was meant to show the entire world

  22. what it was like when God's people lived according to God's ways

  23. had instead become broken down in a shame.

  24. And so in chapter 1 he repented of that.

  25. In chapter 2 he began to work and act and pray

  26. to return to the mission that God had given him.

  27. And so just as we talked about in our confession of faith this morning

  28. and repentance it's not just turning away from sin and our failures

  29. but turning back to everything that God has called us to.

  30. And so we're going to continue the story of Nehemiah

  31. and his turning back to God's calling

  32. but we're going to read not so much about Nehemiah this morning

  33. as we are about all the different people who are involved in the rebuilding.

  34. And here it's going to be specifically the rebuilding of the wall that's around Jerusalem.

  35. There's another book in the Bible called Ezra

  36. that deals with the rebuilding of the temple.

  37. And this book is going to be part of that greater story

  38. the rebuilding of the wall around Jerusalem.

  39. And as I think about chapter 3 it makes me think about coffee.

  40. There was, if you know and have followed

  41. you know as we've gone through the last couple decades

  42. there's been a shift in the way that people consume and think about coffee.

  43. It used to be that you would just simply go to the store

  44. and you would think about

  45. and maybe you still think about this way

  46. there's actually two generational ways of thinking about coffee.

  47. If you are an older generation

  48. you think about coffee in terms of price per pound.

  49. If you are a younger generation

  50. your tendency is going to think about coffee in price per cup.

  51. Which means that the way you think about coffee

  52. is going to change what you're going to be willing to pay for it.

  53. And part of this changing from pound to cup

  54. is the involvement of what we all know as the K-cups

  55. the Keurig machines or pod coffee.

  56. Where you can not necessarily share one pot

  57. that you make with other people

  58. but each person gets to pick their own flavor.

  59. Whether they want tea or coffee or something else.

  60. And so there was an article recently

  61. when I say recently now

  62. I guess it's been about five or six years

  63. that came out in the New York Times

  64. called The High Price of Individualism.

  65. And it broke down the price per pound

  66. of bagged coffee versus pod coffee.

  67. And so you know if you go to the grocery store

  68. and you buy cheaper coffee

  69. it might cost you five to six dollars per pound.

  70. If you buy slightly better coffee

  71. it might be ten to twelve dollars per pound.

  72. And then this article

  73. and this has gone up since then

  74. but at the time

  75. the very finest coffee that you could buy

  76. would be about twenty dollars per pound.

  77. And now that's gone up

  78. in the last five or six years

  79. you can now buy very nice coffee

  80. here in Colorado Springs

  81. for twenty-five or twenty-six dollars a pound

  82. if you want.

  83. But they then after that

  84. calculated the price of coffee

  85. that came in pods.

  86. They figured out how much it was per cup

  87. compared to a bag.

  88. And you don't have to say out loud

  89. but I do want you to think for a second

  90. and guess how much does coffee cost per pound

  91. if you buy it in pods rather than a bag.

  92. Instead of the most expensive bag coffee

  93. which was about twenty dollars

  94. at the time

  95. the calculated price of pod coffee

  96. was fifty

  97. or fifty-one dollars a pound.

  98. In other words

  99. more than twice as much

  100. as the finest coffee

  101. you could buy per bag.

  102. And so the point is

  103. is partially this

  104. that the title

  105. of the article was correct

  106. when it said

  107. the high price

  108. of individualism.

  109. But as we come to this passage

  110. and by the way

  111. I mean to cast no aspersions

  112. or shame

  113. for anyone who uses pod coffee

  114. I've used pod coffee before

  115. that's not my point

  116. in bringing all this up.

  117. But as we come to a list

  118. of names and people

  119. doing work

  120. in Nehemiah chapter three

  121. we're going to encounter

  122. two types of people.

  123. We are going to encounter

  124. coffee pot people

  125. and we're going to encounter

  126. cake up people.

  127. We're going to hear about

  128. different types of people

  129. from all different kinds

  130. of groups

  131. and some people

  132. are going to be

  133. different people

  134. that join one mission

  135. and then we're going

  136. to come across

  137. different people

  138. with different missions.

  139. We'll see different people

  140. with one mission

  141. and different people

  142. with different missions.

  143. In other words

  144. we'll have pot people.

  145. People who are different

  146. in age and generation

  147. but they're willing

  148. to drink the same brew

  149. from the same pot.

  150. And then we'll encounter

  151. people who come

  152. from different generations

  153. and vocations

  154. and stages

  155. but they're one

  156. to insist

  157. on their own way.

  158. And so as we read

  159. this chapter

  160. I'm going to just name

  161. what's about to happen.

  162. We are going to read

  163. a lot of names.

  164. And so if you're tempted

  165. to shut down

  166. and turn off your mind

  167. as we read through them

  168. my challenge to you

  169. is this.

  170. See if you can find

  171. the cake up people

  172. as we read along.

  173. Now I'll tell you

  174. I'll let it out of the bag

  175. a little bit.

  176. Most of the people

  177. in this chapter

  178. are coffee pot people.

  179. The cake up people

  180. show up in one half

  181. of one verse.

  182. So it's not a hard needle

  183. to find

  184. but it is a needle.

  185. So my challenge to you

  186. is as we read along

  187. to see if you can

  188. pick out

  189. who the cake up people are.

  190. Again no shame

  191. if you use cake cups

  192. that's not the point.

  193. Right?

  194. But it's different people

  195. on one mission

  196. versus different people

  197. with different missions.

  198. And so with that

  199. we're in Nehemiah chapter 3.

    Nehemiah 3 chapter mention

  200. As we come to chapter 3

  201. remember that this is

  202. God's word.

  203. And God tells us

  204. that his word

  205. is a lamp to our feet

  206. and a light to our path.

  207. In other words

  208. God has not left us alone

  209. to stumble in the dark

  210. but instead

  211. he's given us

  212. his word

  213. to show us

  214. how we should go.

  215. And so we're in

  216. Nehemiah chapter 3

    Nehemiah 3 chapter mention

  217. starting at verse 1.

  218. Then Eliashib the high priest

  219. rose up

  220. with his brothers

  221. the priests

  222. and they built

  223. the sheep gate.

  224. They consecrated

  225. and set its doors.

  226. They consecrated it

  227. as far

  228. as the tower

  229. of the hundred.

  230. As far as

  231. the tower

  232. of Hananel.

  233. And next to him

  234. the men of Jericho

  235. built.

  236. And next to them

  237. Zachar the son

  238. of Emri built.

  239. The sons of Hassanah

  243. its bolts

  244. and its bars.

  272. They laid its beams

  548. and to the

  550. of the corner.

  551. And between

  552. the upper

  553. chamber of the

  554. corner and

  555. the sheep gate

  556. the goldsmiths

  557. and the

  558. merchants

  559. repaired.

  560. Please pray

  561. with me as we

  562. come to this

  563. portion of

  564. God's word.

  565. Dear Father

  566. in heaven

  567. we thank you

  568. that you've

  569. given us your

  570. word.

  571. That you

  572. speak to us.

  573. You don't

  574. leave us alone

  575. to figure things

  576. out on our

  577. own.

  578. And so we ask

  579. that you would

  580. do that now.

  581. That you would

  582. use this part

  583. of your word

  584. to shape us

  585. and form us

  586. into the people

  587. you want us

  588. to be.

  589. We ask all

  590. these things

  591. in the name

  592. of your son.

  593. Amen.

  594. If you remember

  595. from last week

  596. the very end

  597. of chapter 2

  598. Nehemiah

  599. tells everyone

  600. in verse 18

  601. to rise up

  602. and build.

  603. And so that

  604. same phrase

  605. is repeated

  606. here at the

  607. beginning of

  608. chapter 3

  609. just as he

  610. told them

  611. in chapter 2

  612. to rise up

  613. and build

  614. then we hear

  615. in verse 1

  616. the high priest

  617. rose up

  618. with his brothers

  619. the priests.

  620. They rose up.

  621. And so we begin

  622. to see people

  623. doing exactly

  624. what Nehemiah

  625. had asked them

  626. to do

  627. and as we see

  628. it there's

  629. all kinds

  630. of different

  631. groups and

  632. individuals.

  633. We have the

  634. priests

  635. in verse 1.

  636. And so we have

  637. people that

  638. have a specific

  639. calling working

  640. together to rebuild

  641. the wall.

  642. Then we have

  643. tradesmen.

  644. We see different

  645. guilds in verse 8

  646. with the goldsmiths

  647. and the perfumers.

  648. They're working

  649. together as a group.

  650. People who are

  651. bound together

  652. by a trade

  653. and a vocation.

  654. There's also

  655. individuals.

  656. We see later on

  657. in verse 23

  658. and other parts

  659. that the people

  660. who are building

  661. walls close to

  662. the houses

  663. are individuals.

  664. And one man

  665. if you caught it

  666. in verse 12

  667. I should have

  668. actually made you

  669. watch for this one

  670. as well.

  671. One man comes out

  672. with all his

  673. daughters to rebuild.

  674. And so this is

  675. someone presumably

  676. who did not have

  677. any sons to help him

  678. but he still

  679. he and his family

  680. wanted to take part

  681. in the work.

  682. Not only are there

  683. different people

  684. but there's all kinds

  685. of different abilities.

  686. If you were listening

  687. carefully you know

  688. that there were parts

  689. where we heard about

  690. another section.

  691. For example in verse 4

  692. we met Merrimoth

  693. the son of Uriah.

  694. And I know that you all

  695. were keeping extremely

  696. close track of all

  697. these names.

  698. And so all of you

  699. noticed in verse 21

  700. when Merrimoth

  701. the son of Uriah

  702. showed up again.

  703. Not telling you

  704. anything you didn't

  705. see already.

  706. You notice in verse 21

  707. it says Merrimoth

  708. the son of Uriah

  709. repaired another section.

  710. And so we have

  711. people of different

  712. groups and backgrounds

  713. coming together

  714. but also people

  715. of different abilities.

  716. Some people are able

  717. to build more sections

  718. than other people.

  719. There's different interests.

  720. The priests

  721. repair the sheep gate

  722. which is how we started

  723. in the beginning

  724. and ended in this chapter.

  725. Now why would the priests

  726. repair the sheep gate?

  727. That's going to be

  728. the place where the

  729. sacrifices are brought in

  730. for their work.

  731. We don't know for sure

  732. but some scholars

  733. believe that the section

  734. that the tradesmen

  735. are repaying

  736. are sections that

  737. were close to their shops.

  738. And we know that

  739. the sections that

  740. the individuals repaired

  741. are close to their houses.

  742. And so in this building

  743. not everyone is expected

  744. to be the same.

  745. There are different groups

  746. working together.

  747. And yet they're working

  748. together towards

  749. the same goal.

  750. And so not every person

  751. is the same.

  752. Not every group

  753. is the same

  754. but their mission

  755. is.

  756. Not every person

  757. is the same.

  758. Not every group

  759. is the same

  760. but their mission

  761. is.

  762. They are all

  763. different kinds of people

  764. from different places

  765. and different backgrounds

  766. and yet they choose

  767. to drink

  768. from the same pot.

  769. And so what's true

  770. of God's people

  771. in the Old Testament

  772. of these folks

  773. in Jerusalem

  774. rebuilding the wall

  775. around their city

  776. is true of us as well.

  777. We have different groups

  778. in our church.

  779. We have military

  780. service members.

  781. We have widows.

  782. We have young families

  783. and we have retirees.

  784. We have families

  785. who homeschool

  786. and families that do not.

  787. And so just like

  788. every church

  789. or group

  790. we have different

  791. kinds of people.

  792. We have people

  793. with different interests

  794. different abilities.

  795. People who come

  796. from different backgrounds

  797. who if we were in Jerusalem

  798. we might live

  799. in different parts

  800. of the city.

  801. And that's not the part

  802. that's surprising, right?

  803. Any group that you find

  804. there's going to be people

  805. with different interests

  806. and what is surprising here

  807. is not that there are groups.

  808. That's not unusual.

  809. What's unusual

  810. is that these are groups

  811. that are working together.

  812. And so while the people

  813. are different

  814. the mission is the same.

  815. While the people

  816. are different

  817. the mission is the same.

  818. We can imagine

  819. that there were probably

  820. disagreements going on

  821. about how things

  822. should be done

  823. and who should repair what.

  824. And what we find

  825. in this chapter

  826. is all of these people

  827. not hearing about

  828. their disagreements

  829. except for our K-cup people

  830. which we'll get to

  831. in a minute.

  832. Not hearing about

  833. their disagreements

  834. but hearing about

  835. all the ways

  836. that they lifted

  837. their hands and work.

  838. They did what Nehemiah

  839. called them to do

  840. in chapter 2

  841. to rise up and build.

  842. And throughout

  843. this whole chapter

  844. that's what we see

  845. people rising up

  846. to build.

  847. And so they don't stop

  848. being part of their groups.

  849. Nehemiah doesn't

  850. tell the priests

  851. that they have to join

  852. with the perfumers.

  853. He doesn't tell

  854. the individuals

  855. that they need to join

  856. the goldsmiths.

  857. He lets each group

  858. work together

  859. for their interests.

  860. All he asks here

  861. all that we see

  862. that's required

  863. is that they're working

  864. together for the common goal.

  865. And so this is similar

  866. to what we saw

  867. in Philippians.

  868. In Philippians

  869. we talked about

  870. looking out

  871. not for our own interests

  872. but for the interests

  873. of others.

  874. Being question people

  875. rather than answer people

  876. looking to understand

  877. what it is other groups

  878. of people in the church

  879. need.

  880. And here it's similar

  881. but slightly different.

  882. Instead of looking

  883. to others' interests

  884. ahead of our own

  885. we see these groups

  886. looking to the interests

  887. of the mission

  888. ahead of their own.

  889. If you remember

  890. last week

  891. I defined God's mission

  892. as the part

  893. of the Lord's Prayer

  894. where we ask

  895. that God's kingdom

  896. would come on earth

  897. just as it is in heaven.

  898. And so these groups

  899. are not looking

  900. to put the interests

  901. necessarily of another group

  902. above their own

  903. like we talked about

  904. in Philippians

  905. but they're looking

  906. to put the interests

  907. of God's mission

  908. ahead of their own.

  909. They're looking to

  910. in this case

  911. put the interests

  912. of Jerusalem.

  913. Jerusalem being a city

  914. that could actually

  915. show God's goodness

  916. and his love

  917. and his justice

  918. to the world.

  919. It's the mission

  920. that they're pursuing

  921. that gives them joy.

  922. It's the mission

  923. that allows them

  924. to work together

  925. as different types

  926. and kinds of people.

  927. It's the mission

  928. that allows them

  929. to put aside

  930. their interests

  931. and perhaps

  932. even their abilities.

  933. My guess is that

  934. the priests

  935. were not great

  936. wall builders

  937. and the perfumers

  938. may not have been

  939. either.

  940. Maybe the goldsmiths

  941. had some advantages.

  942. But that wasn't

  943. what mattered.

  944. It wasn't their

  945. backgrounds that mattered

  946. their abilities.

  947. What mattered

  948. was coming together

  949. for one mission.

  950. They put aside

  951. their own preferences,

  952. their own happiness.

  953. These are people

  954. who have chosen

  955. to drink from the coffee pot

  956. even if what they

  957. would prefer

  958. at that moment

  959. would be herbal tea

  960. or some hot cocoa.

  961. And so that's what

  962. brings them

  963. and joins them

  964. all together.

  965. There was an article

  966. a few years ago

  967. in Forbes magazine

  968. about working

  969. with employees

  970. as a business

  971. and the article

  972. was titled

  973. Why Employee Happiness

  974. is the Wrong Goal.

  975. And the point

  976. of the article

  977. was that many companies

  978. are trying to do

  979. everything to meet

  980. the preferences

  981. of their employees

  982. to satisfy

  983. and cater to

  984. little things

  985. that they want

  986. or need

  987. and yet in doing that

  988. they're pursuing

  989. the wrong thing.

  990. Instead they should be

  991. pointing people together

  992. towards one mission

  993. and so the author

  994. of this article

  995. a woman named Liz Ryan

  996. says this

  997. let's imagine

  998. a person

  999. completely immersed

1000. in his or her work.

  1001. We'll use

  1002. the greatest violin maker

  1003. in the world

  1004. as our example.

  1005. I don't know

  1006. who makes

  1007. the greatest violins

  1008. in the world

  1009. but we'll imagine

  1010. that it's an Italian

  1011. violin maker

  1012. named Franco

  1013. and that Franco

  1014. has a studio

  1015. where 15 or 20

  1016. apprentice and journeyman

  1017. violin makers

  1018. work alongside Franco

  1019. making the most

  1020. exquisite violins

  1021. in the world.

  1022. Is Franco happy?

  1023. He is alternately ecstatic

  1024. frustrated

  1025. transported

  1026. confused

  1027. exhausted

1028. and lost in the zone.

  1029. He and his work

  1030. are inextricable

  1031. from one another.

  1032. No one would say

  1033. about Franco

  1034. or his employees

  1035. they are happy.

  1036. Instead people

  1037. in Franco's town

  1038. would say

  1039. those guys

  1040. live and breathe

  1041. violins

  1042. and people

  1043. around the world

  1044. rejoice.

1045. when we as a church

  1046. embrace

  1047. bringing God's kingdom

  1048. here on earth

1049. as it is in heaven

  1050. it will not necessarily

  1051. make us happy.

  1052. It will not necessarily

  1053. meet all our preferences

  1054. and priorities.

  1055. We will be

  1056. alternately ecstatic

  1057. frustrated

  1058. transported

  1059. confused

  1060. exhausted

  1061. and lost

  1062. in the zone.

  1063. And our hope

  1064. is that people here

  1065. in southwest

  1066. Colorado Springs

  1067. would say

  1068. that church

  1069. lives and breathes

  1070. God's kingdom

  1071. so that people

  1072. around the world

  1073. can rejoice.

  1074. We can be

  1075. different people

  1076. with one mission

  1077. or different people

  1078. with different missions.

1079. But only when we are

  1080. different people

  1081. with one mission

  1082. will people

  1083. around the world

  1084. rejoice.

  1085. now I asked you

  1086. to look for

  1087. the K-cup people

  1088. I would be really

  1089. impressed if you

  1090. found them

  1091. because they are

  1092. hidden in one

  1093. half of one verse

  1094. Susie has it

  1095. she is giving me

  1096. the sign

  1097. it is verse 5

  1098. the Techoites

1099. are going to go down

  1100. as infamous

1101. in the book of Nehemiah

  1102. for this one verse

  1103. chapter 3

  1104. verse 5

  1105. Now lord here

  1106. is in the singular

1107. you may have a note

  1108. in your Bible

  1109. saying it could also

  1110. be the plural

  1111. lords

  1112. what most likely

  1113. is being referred to

  1114. is either Nehemiah

  1115. as a person here

  1116. or just supervisors

  1117. in general

  1118. and this language

  1119. here of stooping

  1120. to serve

  1121. is language of

  1122. these group of

  1123. nobles being too

  1124. proud to take part

  1125. in building the wall

  1126. I mentioned earlier

  1127. that probably not

  1128. everyone agreed

  1129. about everything

  1130. we don't know

  1131. why exactly

  1132. these nobles

  1133. were upset

  1134. it could be

  1135. that they had

  1136. a different plan

  1137. for building the wall

  1138. maybe they wanted

  1139. to mix the groups

  1140. up we don't know

  1141. maybe they were

  1142. upset that they

  1143. had been living

  1144. in Jerusalem

  1145. for a while

  1146. and this upstart

  1147. Nehemiah

  1148. and his friends

  1149. came in

  1150. to tell them

  1151. how to rebuild

  1152. someone who'd

  1153. been living

  1154. in the Persian

  1155. empire of all

  1156. places

  1157. as a cupbearer

  1158. maybe it's

  1159. that they thought

  1160. that building

  1161. a wall

  1162. was beneath them

  1163. but for whatever

  1164. the reason

  1165. these nobles

  1166. decided they

  1167. were not going

  1168. to take part

  1169. and it wasn't

  1170. because they

  1171. weren't part

  1172. of God's people

  1173. clearly these

  1174. were part

  1175. of the remnant

  1176. that God

  1177. had preserved

  1178. from the exile

  1179. they'd returned

  1180. to Jerusalem

  1181. they understood

  1182. God's mission

  1183. and the importance

  1184. of Jerusalem

  1185. and yet

  1186. for whatever reason

  1187. their pride

  1188. got in the way

  1189. what was being

  1190. served up here

1191. was a pot of coffee

  1192. and these nobles

  1193. wanted to drink

  1194. something different

  1195. they didn't want

  1196. to take part

  1197. in the mission

  1198. and so what they

  1199. did is they let

  1200. their own preferences

  1201. and their pride

  1202. get in the way

  1203. of God

  1204. and his kingdom

  1205. as we can imagine

  1206. with any

  1207. endeavor

  1208. that's worth

  1209. anything

  1210. there's lots

  1211. of ideas

  1212. and opinions

  1213. about what

  1214. should be done

  1215. lots of people

  1216. working together

  1217. I imagine

  1218. there's probably

  1219. lots of struggles

  1220. that we don't

  1221. hear about

  1222. in this chapter

  1223. maybe the perfumers

  1224. and the goldsmiths

  1225. borrowed tools

  1226. from each other

  1227. and then didn't

  1228. give them back

  1229. maybe someone

  1230. built a little short

1231. and didn't go as far

  1232. as they were supposed

  1233. to and they

  1234. left someone else

1235. to pick up the slack

  1236. there'd be all kinds

  1237. of reasons

  1238. to not stoop

  1239. to serve the mission

  1240. and so the Techoites

  1241. here serve for us

  1242. their nobles

  1243. serve as a negative

  1244. example

  1245. while we have

  1246. different groups

  1247. coming together

  1248. for one mission

  1249. we have one group

  1250. that decided

  1251. to put their pride

  1252. and their preferences

  1253. above everything

  1254. that God had

  1255. for them

  1256. in his holy city

  1257. and so this chapter

  1258. is both an encouragement

  1259. to us

  1260. and a warning

  1261. it's an encouragement

1262. that we would come together

  1263. as people

  1264. who are very

  1265. very different

  1266. and we would pursue

  1267. one mission together

  1268. but it's also a warning

  1269. that if we put

  1270. our own pride

  1271. and our preferences

  1272. ahead of God's mission

  1273. not only will we

  1274. impede it

1275. but we will lose out

  1276. on everything

  1277. that God has

  1278. for us

1279. because it's in this mission

  1280. it's in this work

  1281. that God brings

  1282. his joy

  1283. to his people

  1284. it's no fun

1285. to live in a city

  1286. with broken down walls

1287. but it's in the rebuilding

  1288. of Jerusalem

  1289. that God has given

  1290. his people

  1291. an opportunity

  1292. to come back

  1293. from all the reasons

  1294. that they were sent

  1295. into exile

  1296. to return to him

  1297. and his purposes

1298. and to find his mission

  1299. and their purpose

  1300. as they work together

  1301. side by side

  1302. the other thing

  1303. we see here

  1304. is that Nehemiah

  1305. does not rebuild

  1306. the wall

  1307. on his own

  1308. as we come together

  1309. with different groups

  1310. on one mission

  1311. it means that

  1312. different groups

  1313. are coming together

  1314. the book is named

  1315. after Nehemiah

  1316. because he leads

  1317. and yet Nehemiah's name

  1318. only appears once

  1319. in this chapter

  1320. and it's unclear

  1321. whether it's even

  1322. the same Nehemiah

  1323. while Nehemiah

  1324. is the one

  1325. who has led

  1326. the people in repentance

1327. and has done the research

  1328. it's with the efforts

  1329. of the entire people

  1330. that the wall

  1331. is rebuilt

1332. and so as we are

  1333. one

  1334. different people

  1335. with one mission

  1336. the same is

  1337. true of us

  1338. it's not just

  1339. that everyone

  1340. is working together

  1341. but that everyone

  1342. is working

  1343. we read verses

  1344. from the New Testament

  1345. earlier in our service

  1346. this morning

  1347. about the many

  1348. different gifts

  1349. that God gives

  1350. to his people

  1351. and the fact

  1352. that we need

  1353. everyone

  1354. pushing forward

  1355. for us to do

  1356. the work

  1357. that God

  1358. has given us

  1359. here

  1360. our limitation

  1361. here as a church

  1362. is not primarily

  1363. financial

  1364. our limitations

  1365. are ones of us

  1366. being willing

  1367. to come together

  1368. all as one group

  1369. one church

  1370. to push forward

  1371. everything that God

  1372. has for us

  1373. it's true of the

  1374. things that we

  1375. need inside the

  1376. church and outside

  1377. the church

  1378. inside the church

  1379. we have many

  1380. places in the wall

1381. that need to be built

  1382. we have nursery

  1383. workers that we

  1384. need to come

  1385. alongside and help

  1386. us as we disciple

  1387. our children

  1388. we are always

  1389. looking for more

  1390. people to help

  1391. us with our

  1392. sound in the back

  1393. we are always

  1394. in need of people

  1395. to help disciple

  1396. our children

  1397. but the point

  1398. of building

  1399. Jerusalem

  1400. is not just

  1401. so that it

  1402. would be a place

  1403. for God's people

  1404. and their comfort

  1405. but remember

  1406. that the purpose

  1407. was always

  1408. that it would

  1409. be something

  1410. that would

  1411. show God

  1412. to the entire

  1413. world

  1414. and so our

  1415. need to build

  1416. and work together

  1417. towards one mission

  1418. is not just

  1419. that we would

  1420. be a good

  1421. community here

  1422. inside the church

  1423. but that we

  1424. would reach

  1425. people outside

  1426. the church

  1427. as well

  1428. and so we

  1429. need help

  1430. and people

  1431. we are not

  1432. without many

  1433. opportunities

  1434. to reach

  1435. Fort Carson

  1436. in fact

  1437. there's so many

  1438. opportunities

  1439. to reach them

  1440. that we could

  1441. not do all

  1442. of it as one

  1443. church

  1444. and yet as we

  1445. come together

  1446. and work together

  1447. that's going to

  1448. be the way

  1449. that we're able

  1450. to reach

  1451. soldiers

  1452. with the good

  1453. news of the

  1454. gospel

  1455. we need all

  1456. kinds of

  1457. different groups

  1458. coming together

  1459. to invite our

  1460. neighbors here

  1461. to join us

  1462. I only have

  1463. a limited number

  1464. of neighbors

  1465. but you have

  1466. neighbors as

  1467. well

  1468. and if the

  1469. goldsmiths

  1470. and the

  1471. perfumers

  1472. and the

  1473. priests

  1474. all exert

  1475. their influence

  1476. their areas

  1477. of influence

  1478. to invite

  1479. people

  1480. not just

  1481. into a

  1482. relationship

  1483. with God

  1484. but a

  1485. relationship

  1486. to his

  1487. people

  1488. that is

  1489. when God's

  1490. kingdom

  1491. is going

  1492. to come

  1493. more and

  1494. more on

  1495. earth

  1496. here at

  1497. Cheyenne

  1498. Mountain

  1499. our

  1500. thanksgiving

  1501. baskets

  1502. this past

  1503. year

  1504. went better

  1505. than they

  1506. have ever

  1507. gone

  1508. because we

  1509. had so many

  1510. different people

  1511. with so many

  1512. different gifts

  1513. coming alongside

  1514. we had people

  1515. who were gifted

  1516. in welcoming

  1517. and greeting

  1518. who made people

  1519. who visited our

  1520. church feel at

  1521. home

  1522. we had people

  1523. with gifts

  1524. of service

  1525. who were willing

  1526. to drive around

  1527. and drop off

  1528. baskets to

  1529. people whose

  1530. cars were broken

  1531. down and they

  1532. weren't able to

  1533. come pick them

  1534. up

  1535. we had people

  1536. whose gifts

  1537. were in

  1538. administration

  1539. and were able

  1540. to organize

  1541. and make sure

  1542. the details

  1543. were set

  1544. right

  1545. we heard

  1546. from Autumn

  1547. last Sunday

  1548. about all the

  1549. opportunities

  1550. that we have

  1551. to serve

  1552. with Life

  1553. Network

  1554. and help

  1555. women and

  1556. men who

  1557. are in

  1558. crisis

  1559. and so

  1560. God's

  1561. mission is

  1562. before us

  1563. he has

  1564. given us

  1565. tremendous

  1566. opportunities

  1567. to serve

  1568. him

  1569. to bring

  1570. his kingdom

  1571. here on

  1572. earth as it

  1573. is in

  1574. heaven

  1575. and so

  1576. that's where

  1577. we find

  1578. our unity

  1579. as a people

  1580. that's where

  1581. we come

  1582. together

  1583. not the

  1584. same

  1585. as people

  1586. with many

  1587. different

  1588. gifts

  1589. many different

  1590. abilities

  1591. but we

  1592. come together

  1593. with one

  1594. heart

  1595. one goal

  1596. one desire

  1597. and the

  1598. desire is

  1599. not that

  1600. this would

  1601. be a place

  1602. where

  1603. everything

  1604. that we

  1605. want

  1606. happens

  1607. but where

  1608. everything

  1609. that God

  1610. wants

  1611. we pursue

  1612. it's not

  1613. a place

  1614. where

  1615. everything

  1616. we want

  1617. happens

  1618. but it's

  1619. a place

  1620. where

  1621. everything

  1622. that God

  1623. wants

  1624. we pursue

  1625. we find

  1626. our unity

  1627. in our

  1628. mission

  1629. and we

  1630. find it

  1631. there

  1632. because

  1633. that is

  1634. where

  1635. God

  1636. has found

  1637. his unity

  1638. first

  1639. God

  1640. God

  1641. God

  1642. had a

  1643. unified

  1644. mission

  1645. within

  1646. the

  1647. Trinity

  1648. to this

  1649. world

  1650. before he

  1651. ever called

  1652. us to do

  1653. anything with

  1654. him and

  1655. for him

  1656. God sent

  1657. his son

  1658. as part

  1659. of his

  1660. mission

  1661. and they

  1662. were united

  1663. in that

  1664. Jesus tells

  1665. us in

  1666. John chapter

    John 10 chapter mention

  1667. 10 that he

  1668. and the

  1669. father are

  1670. one

  1671. and yet

  1672. they have

  1673. different roles

  1674. in the way

  1675. they accomplish

  1676. it

  1677. God

  1678. the father

  1679. sent his

  1680. son

  1681. Jesus

  1682. the son

  1683. died

  1684. and he

  1685. died

  1686. for our

  1687. sins

  1688. he died

  1689. to redeem

  1690. people who

  1691. had rebelled

  1692. against him

  1693. but he

  1694. didn't just

  1695. redeem us

  1696. from sin

  1697. he redeemed

  1698. us to

  1699. all the

  1700. work that

  1701. he has

  1702. for us

  1703. everything

  1704. that he

  1705. has to

  1706. redeem

  1707. and bring

  1708. back

  1709. what's been

  1710. ruined

  1711. and broken

  1712. by sin

  1713. and so

  1714. Jesus has

  1715. a mission

  1716. as well

  1717. he says

  1718. in Luke

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1719. chapter

  1720. 19 that

  1721. he came

  1722. to seek

  1723. and save

  1724. the lost

  1725. and so

  1726. Jesus'

  1727. mission

  1728. to us

  1729. is the

  1730. mission

  1731. that enables

  1732. us to

  1733. also join

  1734. with him

  1735. he came

  1736. to seek

  1737. and save

  1738. us so

  1739. that we

  1740. could be

  1741. part of

  1742. his mission

  1743. here on

  1744. earth

  1745. so we

  1746. follow him

  1747. in doing

  1748. what he's

  1749. already done

  1750. to bring

  1751. his kingdom

  1752. on earth

  1753. just as

  1754. it is

  1755. in heaven

  1756. it's a

  1757. mission

  1758. that Jesus

  1759. started

  1760. and it's

  1761. a mission

  1762. that he

  1763. gives to

  1764. us

  1765. as well

  1766. and so

  1767. the question

  1768. is not

  1769. whether we

  1770. are different

  1771. because we

  1772. are

  1773. the question

  1774. is whether

  1775. we will

  1776. join together

  1777. in our

  1778. differences

  1779. because Jesus

  1780. has already

  1781. joined together

  1782. with us

  1783. and so

  1784. we're going to

  1785. sing about that

  1786. now

  1787. we're going to

  1788. sing about

  1789. the church

  1790. arising and

  1791. doing the

  1792. work that

  1793. God's given

  1794. us

  1795. because of

  1796. the work

  1797. that he

  1798. has already

  1799. done

  1800. for us

  1801. and so

  1802. please pray

  1803. with me

  1804. as we

  1805. come to

  1806. that portion

  1807. of our

  1808. service

  1809. dear father

  1810. in heaven

  1811. we thank

  1812. you

  1813. for your

  1814. mission

  1815. to us

  1816. we thank

  1817. you for

  1818. sending

  1819. your son

  1820. so that

  1821. he could

  1822. bear the

  1823. weight of

  1824. your full

  1825. and complete

  1826. justice

  1827. so that

  1828. we would

  1829. not have

  1830. to

  1831. thank you

  1832. for redeeming

  1833. us from

  1834. sin so that

  1835. you could

  1836. redeem us

  1837. to righteousness

  1838. to work

  1839. together

  1840. as one

  1841. community

  1842. as one

  1843. church

  1844. following

  1845. after you

  1846. together

  1847. we ask

  1848. that you'd

  1849. send your

  1850. spirit

  1851. and you'd

  1852. help us

  1853. to do

  1854. that now

  1855. we ask

  1856. all these

  1857. things in

  1858. the name

  1859. of your

  1860. son

  1861. amen
