  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  4. Special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  5. We are glad you're here, and we're glad you're here not because we are trying to fill seats,

  6. but we are glad you're here because we are following after Jesus together as one community.

  7. And as we follow after Jesus, we are convinced that there is no one so good that they don't need God's grace,

  8. and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  9. And that means that God has something to say to everyone in his word,

  10. and everyone needs to hear what God has to say.

  11. And so that's what we do at this portion of our worship service.

  12. We look at God's word so that we can hear from him.

  13. If you've been with us, you know we're in the book of Nehemiah.

  14. The book of Nehemiah is about a man named Nehemiah.

  15. It takes place in the Old Testament.

  16. So it's about God's people before Jesus' first coming.

  17. And in this portion of the Old Testament, we're in the 5th century B.C.

  18. It's around 446, 445.

  19. God's people have been in exile, and now they've returned.

  20. But even though they're returning to the city of Jerusalem,

  21. the city that God had given them with the purpose of being a light to the nations,

  22. they've neglected God's city and God's ways.

  23. As we saw in chapter 1, the wall around Jerusalem had fallen down,

  24. and so Nehemiah, so discouraged in seeing the sin of God's people,

  25. repented with tears and fasting and prayer.

  26. And so he turned away from sin.

  27. Then we saw in chapter 2 that Nehemiah did not just turn away from sin,

  28. but he turned back to God and his mission.

  29. He returned to Jerusalem and began leadership in rebuilding the wall.

  30. And then last week in chapter 3, we saw the tremendous impact that happened

  31. when it was not just Nehemiah working,

  32. but also all of God's people coming together,

  33. each contributing whatever they could,

  34. putting aside their preferences and their differences

  35. to work together towards one mission.

  36. And so we saw that we can have different people with different missions

  37. or different people with one mission,

  38. and the impact that happened in chapter 3

  39. when there was different people with one mission was tremendous.

  40. Now, if I were to ask any one of you,

  41. or you were to go to any church

  42. that is seeking to be active and vibrant,

  43. you would hear people say that they want to have an impact.

  44. In fact, I would be surprised if there was someone

  45. who told me they were uninterested in having an impact.

  46. They did not want to have any impact.

  47. But there's a problem with impact.

  48. As one man has said, impact and opposition go together.

  49. Impact and opposition go together.

  50. You cannot change something without overcoming a force.

  51. Even if this is something destructive, right,

  52. you can't change a wall or a building without moving things,

  53. without taking things that would oppose you.

  54. You cannot rebuild a wall like they're doing here

  55. without opposition as well.

  56. And so as we see the excitement from chapter 3,

  57. the excitement of God's people going out on God's mission,

  58. trying to have an impact and rebuild,

  59. we should expect nothing less

  60. than for them to experience opposition.

  61. And that's what we're going to see here in chapter 4.

  62. And so the question that we have is,

  63. what happens when opposition comes?

  64. We know that it's going to happen

  65. if we have an impact.

  66. We know that we're going to face it

  67. if we want an impact.

  68. And so how do we prepare?

  69. What do we know and do when opposition comes?

  70. It's with that that we are in Nehemiah chapter 4.

    Nehemiah 4 chapter mention

  71. You can turn there with me in your Bibles.

  72. It's also printed in the very end of your worship guide.

  73. As we come to this chapter,

  74. remember that this is God's word.

  75. And God tells us in Jeremiah

  76. that his word is a hammer

  77. that breaks a rock into pieces.

  78. In other words,

  79. there is no opposition

  80. that can stand up against the impact of God's word.

  81. And so that's why we turn to it now,

  82. starting in Nehemiah chapter 4 in verse 1.

    Nehemiah 4 chapter mention

  83. Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall,

  84. he was angry and greatly enraged,

  85. and he jeered at the Jews.

  86. And he said in the presence of his brothers

  87. and of the army of Samaria,

  88. what are these feeble Jews doing?

  89. Will they restore it for themselves?

  90. Will they sacrifice?

  91. Will they finish up in a day?

  92. Will they revive the stones

  93. out of the heaps of rubbish

  94. and burned ones at that?

  95. Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him,

  96. and he said,

  97. Yes.

  98. What are they building?

  99. If a fox goes up on it,

  100. he will break down their stone wall.

  101. Verse 4.

  102. Hear, O our God,

  103. for we are despised.

  104. Turn back their taunt on their own heads

  105. and give them up to be plundered

  106. in a land where they are captives.

  107. Do not cover their guilt

  108. and let not their sin

  109. be blotted out from your sight,

  110. for they have provoked you to anger

  111. in the presence of the builders.

  112. So we built the wall,

  113. and all the wall was joined together

  114. to half its height,

  115. for the people had a mind to work.

  116. Verse 7.

  117. But when Sanballat and Tobiah

  118. and the Arabs and the Ammonites

  119. and the Ashdodites

  120. heard that the repairing of the walls

  121. of Jerusalem was going forward

  122. and that the breaches were beginning

  123. to be closed,

  124. they were very angry.

  125. And they all plotted together

  126. to come and fight against Jerusalem

  127. and to cause confusion in it.

  128. And we prayed to our God

  129. and set a guard as protection

  130. against them day and night.

  131. In Judah it was said,

  132. the strength of those

  133. who bear the burdens is failing.

  134. There is too much rubble.

  135. By ourselves we will not be able

  136. to rebuild the wall.

  137. Verse 11.

  138. And our enemies said,

  139. they will not know or see

  140. till we come among them

  141. and kill them and stop the work.

  142. At that time the Jews

  143. who lived near them

  144. came from all directions

  145. and said to us ten times,

  146. you must return to us.

  147. So in all the lowest parts

  148. of the space behind the wall,

  149. in open places,

  150. I stationed the people

  151. by their clans

  152. with their swords,

  153. their spears,

  154. and their bows.

  155. And I looked and arose

  156. and said to the nobles

  157. and to the officials

  158. and to the rest of the people,

  159. do not be afraid of them.

  160. Remember the Lord

  161. who is great and awesome

  162. and fight for your brothers,

  163. your sons,

  164. your daughters,

  165. your wives,

  166. and your homes.

  167. Verse 15.

  168. When our enemies heard

  169. that it was known to us

  170. and that God had frustrated

  171. their plan,

  172. we all returned to the wall,

  173. each to his work.

  174. From that day on,

  175. half of my servants

  176. worked on construction

  177. and half held the spears,

  178. shields, bows,

  179. and coats of mail.

  180. And the leaders stood behind

  181. the whole house of Judah

  182. who were building on the wall.

  183. Those who carried burdens

  184. were loaded in such a way

  185. that each labored on the work

  186. with one hand

  187. and held his weapon

  188. with the other.

  189. Verse 18.

  190. And each of the builders

  191. had his sword strapped

  192. at his side

  193. which he built

  194. while he built.

  195. The man who sounded

  196. the trumpet

  197. was beside me.

  198. And I said to the nobles

  199. and to the officials

  200. and to the rest of the people,

  201. the work is great

  202. and widely spread

  203. and we are separated

  204. on the wall

  205. far from one another.

  206. In the place

  207. where you hear

  208. the sound of the trumpet

  209. rally to us there,

  210. our God will fight for us.

  211. Verse 21.

  212. So he labored at the work

  213. and half of them

  214. held the spears

  215. from the break of dawn

  216. until the stars came out.

  217. I also said to the people

  218. at that time,

  219. Let every man

  220. and his servants

  221. pass the night

  222. within Jerusalem

  223. that they may be a guard

  224. for us by night

  225. and may labor by day.

  226. So neither I

  227. nor my brothers

  228. nor my servants

  229. nor the men of the guard

  230. who followed me,

  231. none of us

  232. took off our clothes.

  233. Each kept his weapon

  234. at his right hand.

  235. Please pray with me

  236. as we come to this portion

  237. of God's word.

  238. Dear Father in heaven,

  239. we thank you

  240. that your word

  241. is a hammer

  242. that breaks a rock

  243. into pieces.

  244. We thank you

  245. that it's powerful,

  246. brought things to life

  247. at the beginning

  248. of your creation.

  249. It brings us

  250. to life now.

  251. And so we ask

  252. that you would do that

  253. by your spirit

  254. this morning.

  255. That you would send

  256. your spirit

  257. to help us

  258. as we hear from you.

  259. That you would

  260. speak to us

  261. things that we can

  262. understand

  263. and apply

  264. and know

  265. and love about you.

  266. Most of all,

  267. we ask that you would

  268. cast a spotlight

  269. on Jesus

  270. so that we could

  271. see him as

  272. more beautiful

  273. than anything else.

  274. We ask all these things

  275. in the name of your son.

  276. Amen.

  277. If you remember

  278. from chapter 2,

  279. that was the first time

  280. that we met

  281. these opponents

  282. of Nehemiah

  283. and I mentioned

  284. that we were going

  285. to talk more

  286. about them later.

  287. Because in chapter 2,

  288. all they had to do

  289. was question Nehemiah.

  290. They were confident

  291. that he was not

  292. going to succeed.

  293. And then if you remember

  294. at the very end

  295. of the chapter,

  296. they asked him

  297. if he was trying

  298. to rebel against the king.

  299. And he had his

  300. famous answer

  301. in which he did not

  302. actually tell them

  303. what they wanted to hear.

  304. He did not talk

  305. about the king at all

  306. but instead said

  307. that God was going

  308. to fight for them.

  309. Now after chapter 3,

  310. with the tremendous

  311. building that happened

  312. with God's people,

  313. we see that as the

  314. impact that they're having

  315. increases, so does

  316. the opposition.

  317. It was small opposition

  318. in chapter 2

  319. because Nehemiah

  320. had small impact.

  321. And now that he's

  322. had big impact,

  323. large impact,

  324. it is big and large

  325. opposition.

  326. We start out here

  327. with essentially

  328. an ancient Near Eastern

  329. Twitter thread

  330. with the mocking

  331. from these leaders.

  332. First of all,

  333. in verse 1,

  334. they're enraged

  335. and jeering.

  336. we can imagine

  337. them posting

  338. quick,

  339. small character

  340. posts about

  341. the ridiculousness

  342. of these Israelites

  343. who are trying

  344. to rebuild the wall.

  345. He calls them

  346. feeble in verse 2

  347. and then he mocks

  348. them for their

  349. spirituality.

  350. He says,

  351. will they sacrifice?

  352. In other words,

  353. are they going to use

  354. a spiritual solution

  355. to a physical problem?

  356. Don't they understand

  357. that this is a wall?

  358. These silly Jews.

  359. The resources

  360. that they have,

  361. the tools that they have,

  362. have nothing to do

  363. with the problem

  364. that's in front of them.

  365. In fact,

  366. if you look at

  367. chapter 3,

  368. they know that

  369. they're having

  370. priests build the wall.

  371. So what are these

  372. priests doing?

  373. They're just sacrificing,

  374. trying to rebuild.

  375. And then the mocking

  376. gets even worse

  377. with Tobiah the Ammonite.

  378. We can imagine him

  379. posting an animated

  380. picture of a fox.

  381. He says,

  382. if a fox goes up on it,

  383. he will break down

  384. their stone wall.

  385. And so what starts

  386. out with mocking,

  387. however,

  388. continues to become

  389. even worse than that.

  390. Because in verse 11,

  391. we find out

  392. that these enemies

  393. are not just making fun

  394. of God's people.

  395. They're not just

  396. mocking their methods.

  397. They're not just

  398. talking about how foolish

  399. they are.

  400. They actually have

  401. a real plan.

  402. And our enemy said,

  403. verse 11,

  404. they will not know

  405. or see till we come

  406. among them and kill them

  407. and stop the work.

  408. We saw before that

  409. in verse 7 and 8

  410. that there was

  411. a real plan.

  412. They're plotting

  413. in verse 8

  414. to come together

  415. and fight against Jerusalem

  416. and cause confusion in it.

  417. And if this sounds

  418. like an idle threat,

  419. this is one of the places

  420. where what the Bible

  421. tells us is also

  422. attested to

  423. in other ancient documents.

  424. And so we know

  425. that these leaders

  426. were very powerful.

  427. This Arab leader

  428. is not just the leader

  429. of one group.

  430. He's actually the leader

  431. of multiple tribes.

  432. The Ammonites

  433. would have been

  434. a powerful Jewish family

  435. with great political influence.

  436. And Sambalot,

  437. who we've met

  438. a couple times before,

  439. was the governor

  440. of Samaria.

  441. Geographically,

  442. they would have represented

  443. an area that would have

  444. surrounded all of Jerusalem.

  445. And so these are

  446. not just idle,

  447. mocking threats,

  448. but these are

  449. very powerful

  450. political figures

  451. who are coming up

  452. against God's people.

  453. It would be

  454. completely understandable

  455. for them to be afraid

  456. and confused

  457. and worried

  458. about what was going

  459. to happen.

  460. And so what we see first

  461. is that God

  462. has real enemies.

  463. Deciding it as it is

  464. to talk about

  465. returning to God's ways

  466. and His mission,

  467. if we return

  468. to God's ways

  469. and His mission,

  470. we are going to get

  471. to meet His enemies.

  472. God has real enemies

  473. that hate His ways.

  474. They want to destroy

  475. His people

  476. and His mission.

  477. That's why 1 Peter

  478. tells us to be

  479. sober-minded

  480. because the devil

  481. prowls around

  482. like a roaring lion

  483. seeking someone

  484. to devour.

  485. Now in this chapter here,

  486. we see actual death threats.

  487. If you are a Christian

  488. in certain parts

  489. of the world,

  490. you'll face that.

  491. So this is not unknown

  492. from what Christians

  493. today are facing.

  494. That's not what we face

  495. here in the United States.

  496. So the last time

  497. I checked,

  498. I don't think

  499. necessarily killing.

  500. We don't see people

  501. put in prison.

  502. But we do see

  503. an awful lot

  504. of lies

  505. and we see

  506. an awful lot

  507. of lawsuits.

  508. We see lies

  509. and lawsuits

  510. in the U.S.

  511. We see people

  512. on both ends

  513. of the political spectrum

  514. who are opposed

  515. to God and His ways,

  516. who are enemies

  517. of God.

  518. We see people

  519. who oppress the poor.

  520. which is a group

  521. that God loves.

  522. We see groups

  523. that are fighting

  524. to devalue human life,

  525. which God says

  526. was made in His image.

  527. We see groups

  528. that are seeking

  529. to divide people

  530. along racial lines

  531. when it was God

  532. who made the nations.

  533. Christians.

  534. We see groups

  535. that are looking

  536. to distort

  537. and destroy marriage,

  538. which God gave

  539. as one of His greatest

  540. gifts to humanity.

  541. And then we just see

  542. people who are

  543. spreading lies

  544. about God

  545. and His people.

  546. Not speaking

  547. what is true,

  548. but instead

  549. making up stories

  550. about what's

  551. actually going on.

  552. And so I said

  553. at the beginning

  554. as I say every Sunday

  555. that there is

  556. no one so good

  557. they don't need

  558. God's grace

  559. and no one so bad

  560. they can't have it.

  561. But the harsh reality

  562. is that while there is

  563. no one so bad

  564. they can't have

  565. God's grace.

  566. There are many people

  567. who are not open to it.

  568. Martin Luther

  569. had a friend of his,

  570. his barber asked him

  571. for advice about prayer.

  572. This man wasn't sure

  573. where to start

  574. and so he knew

  575. Martin Luther was a theologian

  576. and he said

  577. I really want some help.

  578. I need some help

  579. praying to God.

  580. And so Martin Luther

  581. wrote something

  582. that's become

  583. very famous now

  584. called A Simple Way

  585. to Pray

  586. which was something

  587. he wrote.

  588. He prays that God

  589. would convert people

  590. who are open

  591. to His grace

  592. but he would also

  593. restrain

  594. and it might be

  595. divisive or destructive.

  596. And so as we offer

  597. God's grace to everyone

  598. we're fighting against

  599. God and His ways.

  600. And so what happens

  601. when God's enemies

  602. show up?

  603. First of all

  604. we see what's

  605. completely natural

  606. among God's people

  607. that there's great

  608. discouragement and fear.

  609. In verse 10

  610. they decide

  611. that they're actually

  612. not going to be able

  613. to do this.

  614. They say by ourselves

  615. we will not be able

  616. to rebuild the wall.

  617. And in a sense

  618. they're right.

  619. By themselves

  620. they're not going

  621. to be able to.

  622. But then they don't

  623. just face discouragement

  624. they face criticism

  625. from their own people.

  626. There are other Jews

  627. who are watching

  628. what's going on

  629. and they believe

  630. that this is too dangerous

  631. to continue.

  632. And so in verse 12

  633. the Jews who lived

  634. near them

  635. came from all directions

  636. and said to us

  637. not just once

  638. how many times?

  639. They said ten times

  640. you must return to us.

  641. And so when we face

  642. God's enemies

  643. when we meet

  644. God's enemies

  645. discouragement is real.

  646. We'll be tempted

  647. to believe

  648. that we are not

  649. powerful enough

  650. to face

  651. what's been brought

  652. against us.

  653. We will believe

  654. and be tempted

  655. to believe that

  656. the best thing

  657. we can do

  658. is retreat

  659. and give up.

  660. The devil has

  661. different strategies.

  662. C.S. Lewis

  663. is famous

  664. for talking about

  665. these

  666. in his Mere Christianity.

  667. One of his strategies

  668. is to do

  669. what we talked

  670. about last week

  671. to convince people

  672. that there is

  673. nothing more important

  674. than their comforts

  675. and their convenience.

  676. That's one of

  677. our enemy's

  678. most effective strategies

  679. in North America.

  680. But when that strategy

  681. doesn't work

  682. the other strategy

  683. is to resort

  684. to all out war.

  685. And so when God's

  686. people had overcome

  687. the temptation

  688. to go after

  689. their own ways

  690. and comforts

  691. and preferences

  692. in chapter 3

  693. the enemy

  694. is left

  695. with only one option

  696. and that's this

  697. to come at them

  698. with tremendous

  699. opposition.

  700. In the mini-series

  701. Band of Brothers

  702. which follows

  703. a company

  704. of paratroopers

  705. involved in D-Day

  706. there's a scene

  707. near the end

  708. where Lieutenant

  709. Dick Winters

  710. is with his people

  711. it's the Battle

  712. of the Bulge

  713. and as they show up

  714. they meet

  715. all these soldiers

  716. who are coming back

  717. from the front lines.

  718. They know that

  719. they need ammunition

  720. so if you know

  721. this scene

  722. this is the one

  723. where they're

  724. trying to

  725. easy companies

  726. trying to take

  727. the ammunition

  728. that these

  729. retreating soldiers

  730. have

  731. because they need

  732. as much as they can.

  733. And as they

  734. go back

  735. and they're passed

  736. by all these men

  737. one man stops

  738. to talk to

  739. Dick Winters

  740. and he says this

  741. it looks like

  742. you guys are going

  743. to be surrounded

  744. and without

  745. missing a beat

  746. and with a

  747. straight face

  748. and a monotone

  749. Dick simply says

  750. we're paratroopers

  751. Lieutenant

  752. we are supposed

  753. to be surrounded

  754. as we follow

  755. God

  756. and return

  757. from sin

  758. to everything

  759. that he's called

  760. us to

  761. we are supposed

  762. to be surrounded

  763. if we are not

  764. facing opposition

  765. then we are not

  766. having any impact

  767. and so rather

  768. than being

  769. discouraged

  770. we should not

  771. be surprised

  772. it's naive

  773. to believe

  774. that we can go

  775. on God's mission

  776. with him

  777. and not face

  778. great opposition

  779. it's naive

  780. to believe

  781. that we can go

  782. on God's mission

  783. and not face

  784. discouragement

  785. and so as we

  786. know that we're

  787. going to be

  788. surrounded

  789. as we know

  790. that we're going

  791. to face

  792. God's enemies

  793. coming up

  794. against us

  795. what can we

  796. do

  797. to have the

  798. strength

  799. and courage

  800. to keep

  801. moving

  802. we see two

  803. things that

  804. Nehemiah leads

  805. his people in

  806. first

  807. they pray

  808. this is the

  809. same thing we

  810. saw in chapter

  811. two that prayer

  812. and action

  813. go together

  814. and so in

  815. verse four

  816. after this

  817. mocking happens

  818. the very first

  819. thing they do

  820. is cry out

  821. to God

  822. hear oh our

  823. God for we

  824. are despised

  825. turn back

  826. their taunt

  827. on their own

  828. heads and

  829. give them up

  830. to be plundered

  831. in a land

  832. where they are

  833. captives

  834. if this sounds

  835. harsh

  836. remember two

  837. things

  838. first

  839. Nehemiah is

  840. not taking

  841. justice into

  842. his own

  843. hands

  844. he's not

  845. attacking these

  846. people

  847. he's not

  848. taking a role

  849. that belongs

  850. to God

  851. and giving

  852. it to himself

  853. instead he's

  854. calling out

  855. for God

  856. to do what

  857. God always

  858. does to be

  859. a great

  860. and good

  861. judge

  862. and second

  863. of all he

  864. is asking

  865. here for

  866. God to do

  867. to these

  868. people what

  869. he has

  870. already done

  871. to his

  872. own people

  873. remember that

  874. Israel is

  875. returning now

  876. from exile

  877. and being

  878. in exile

  879. meant that

  880. they had

  881. been plundered

  882. and been in

  883. a land where

  884. they were

  885. captives

  886. and so

  887. Nehemiah and

  888. his people

  889. are crying

  890. out to God

  891. for justice

  892. saying when

  893. we turned

  894. away from

  895. your ways

  896. you took

  897. us into

  898. exile and

  899. you let

  900. us be

  901. plundered

  902. will you

  903. not at

  904. least do

  905. as much

  906. for your

  907. enemies

  908. it's like

  909. a child

  910. coming to

  911. a parent

  912. saying

  913. you punished

  914. me in such

  915. a way

  916. when I

  917. did this

  918. why won't

  919. you punish

  920. my sibling

  921. why do

  922. I not

  923. get away

  924. with this

  925. but they

  926. do

  927. of course

  928. the answer

  929. is you're

  930. the oldest

  931. they're

  932. the youngest

  933. so it's

  934. different

  935. just kidding

  936. but first

  937. of all

  938. they pray

  939. they cry

  940. out to

  941. God

  942. for his

  943. help

  944. but they

  945. don't just

  946. pray

  947. they work

  948. just as we

  949. saw before

  950. prayer and

  951. action go

  952. together

  953. and so on

  954. the one

  955. hand they

  956. don't just

  957. work they

  958. don't just

  959. put swords

  960. in their

  961. hands and

  962. station guards

  963. but they

  964. also pray

  965. and on

  966. the other

  967. hand they

  968. don't just

  969. pray but

  970. they also

  971. work in

  972. station guards

  973. and so

  974. before we

  975. saw that

  976. prayer and

  977. action go

  978. together in

  979. general when

  980. we return to

  981. God's ways

  982. and here we

  983. see not just

  984. in general that

  985. they go

  986. together but

  987. that they go

  988. together specifically

  989. when we face

  990. opposition

  991. that rather than

  992. give in to

  993. discouragement

  994. and fear

  995. we can cry

  996. out to God

  997. for justice

  998. as they do

  999. here

  1000. and then we

  1001. can turn back

  1002. to the work

  1003. he's given

  1004. us

  1005. we don't

  1006. turn back

  1007. as an act

  1008. simply of

  1009. blind faith

  1010. because not

  1011. only do we

  1012. pray and we

  1013. act

  1014. but we also

  1015. know what

  1016. we've seen

  1017. before in

  1018. this book

  1019. that when we

  1020. follow God

  1021. when we are

  1022. pursuing him

  1023. and his

  1024. kingdom

  1025. when we are

  1026. looking to

  1027. bring God's

  1028. kingdom here

  1029. on earth

  1030. just as it

  1031. is in heaven

  1032. God's very

  1033. presence is

  1034. with us

  1035. Nehemiah

  1036. does not

  1037. just pray

  1038. but he

  1039. reminds people

  1040. in verse 14

  1041. that as they

  1042. face God's

  1043. enemies

  1044. God and his

  1045. character are

  1046. much much

  1047. greater

  1048. and I

  1049. looked and

  1050. arose and

  1051. said to the

  1052. nobles and

  1053. to the officials

  1054. and to the

  1055. rest of the

  1056. people do

  1057. not be afraid

  1058. of them

  1059. remember the

  1060. Lord who

  1061. is great

  1062. and awesome

  1063. we're not

  1064. just praying

  1065. and acting

  1066. but as we

  1067. face

  1068. vicious dogs

  1069. coming after

  1070. us

  1071. we know that

  1072. God has

  1073. them on a

  1074. leash

  1075. and as we

  1076. face opposition

  1077. we know that

  1078. we don't do

  1079. it alone

  1080. but God's

  1081. power and

  1082. his presence

  1083. are with us

  1084. because that

  1085. is what he's

  1086. promised

  1087. and so

  1088. that's the

  1089. same thing

  1090. we see

  1091. in verse 20

  1092. in the place

  1093. where you hear

  1094. the sound of

  1095. the trumpet

  1096. rally to us

  1097. there

  1098. our God

  1099. will fight

  1100. for us

  1101. this is not

  1102. blind faith

  1103. that he says

  1104. because he's

  1105. already seen

  1106. it in verse 15

  1107. when our enemies

  1108. heard that it

  1109. was known to

  1110. us and that

  1111. God had

  1112. frustrated

  1113. their plan

  1114. God's

  1115. presence

  1116. with his

  1117. people is

  1118. not just a

  1119. pie in the

  1120. sky presence

  1121. it's not

  1122. just a

  1123. hallmark card

  1124. encouragement

  1125. but it is

  1126. real intervention

  1127. God does

  1128. not take

  1129. away opposition

  1130. from his

  1131. people

  1132. but he is

  1133. there with

  1134. them as

  1135. we go

  1136. through it

  1137. and when we

  1138. know that he

  1139. is great and

  1140. powerful

  1141. it puts

  1142. everything else

  1143. in perspective

  1144. if you are

  1145. a Star Wars

  1146. fan you're

  1147. familiar with

  1148. the first

  1149. scene of a

  1150. new hope

  1151. Luke is

  1152. in the

  1153. Death Star

  1154. trench

  1155. and he's

  1156. trying to

  1157. save the

  1158. rebellion

  1159. he's being

  1160. chased by

  1161. Darth Vader

  1162. however

  1163. and it

  1164. seems that

  1165. all hope

  1166. is going

  1167. to be

  1168. quickly

  1169. lost

  1170. Darth Vader

  1171. is flying

  1172. behind him

  1173. he's already

  1174. taken out

  1175. many of the

  1176. rebel fighters

  1177. there's not

  1178. much hope

  1179. left

  1180. and then

  1181. out of

  1182. nowhere

  1183. Han Solo

  1184. shows up

  1185. in the

  1186. Millennium Falcon

  1187. Han Solo

  1188. takes out

  1189. everyone who

  1190. is helping

  1191. Darth Vader

  1192. and sends

  1193. Darth Vader

  1194. and his

  1195. ships

  1196. careening

  1197. off

  1198. into space

  1199. and so

  1200. as Luke

  1201. pulls out

  1202. Han Solo

  1203. tells him

  1204. you're all

  1205. clear kid

  1206. let's blow

  1207. this thing

  1208. and go

  1209. home

  1210. when we

  1211. face God's

  1212. enemies

  1213. we are

  1214. facing real

  1215. evil

  1216. but God

  1217. is great

  1218. and awesome

  1219. and so

  1220. his power

  1221. is more

  1222. devastating

  1223. it is more

  1224. secure

  1225. it is more

  1226. reliable

  1227. than anything

  1228. that our

  1229. enemies have

  1230. to offer

  1231. now we've

  1232. talked about

  1233. God and

  1234. his enemies

  1235. the fact

  1236. that we

  1237. will meet

  1238. them

  1239. that they

  1240. oppose us

  1241. but the

  1242. hard truth

  1243. is that

  1244. we

  1245. if we

  1246. are in

  1247. Christ

  1248. if we

  1249. are following

  1250. after Jesus

  1251. we're once

  1252. God's

  1253. enemies

  1254. and if we

  1255. are not

  1256. a Christian

  1257. if we have

  1258. questions or

  1259. doubts or

  1260. objections to

  1261. Christianity

  1262. we are

  1263. still

  1264. enemies

  1265. of God

  1266. and so

  1267. the story

  1268. and the

  1269. hope that

  1270. we hold

  1271. out is

  1272. not that

  1273. we are

  1274. the good

  1275. guys

  1276. fighting

  1277. against

  1278. the bad

  1279. guys

  1280. it is

  1281. not that

  1282. we are

  1283. somehow

  1284. better

  1285. than everyone

  1286. else around

  1287. us

  1288. it's not

  1289. that we're

  1290. smarter

  1291. that we

  1292. understand

  1293. God's

  1294. ways

  1295. we're

  1296. able to

  1297. face

  1298. God's

  1299. enemies

  1300. we're

  1301. able to

  1302. know his

  1303. greatness

  1304. and his

  1305. power

  1306. enemies

  1307. because God

  1308. is the

  1309. one who

  1310. has taken

  1311. his enemies

  1312. and made

  1313. them his

  1314. friends

  1315. it's because

  1316. of Jesus

  1317. death

  1318. that he

  1319. took the

  1320. punishment

  1321. that we

  1322. deserve

  1323. that he

  1324. justified

  1325. us as we

  1326. talked about

  1327. earlier in

  1328. this service

  1329. his presence

  1330. is with us

  1331. not because

  1332. we are good

  1333. people but

  1334. because Jesus

  1335. was willing

  1336. to let his

  1337. enemies crush

  1338. him

  1339. and so

  1340. when we

  1341. face God's

  1342. enemies

  1343. we do

  1344. it

  1345. because God

  1346. wins against

  1347. his enemies

  1348. for us

  1349. because he

  1350. was willing

  1351. to let

  1352. God's

  1353. enemy

  1354. crush

  1355. him

  1356. and so

  1357. as we

  1358. talk about

  1359. the gospel

  1360. as good

  1361. news

  1362. it's not

  1363. good news

  1364. that we

  1365. are asking

  1366. other people

  1367. to be good

  1368. like we're

  1369. good

  1370. but it's

  1371. the good

  1372. news that

  1373. no one is

  1374. good

  1375. only Jesus

  1376. is good

  1377. and so

  1378. God's

  1379. presence

  1380. and his

  1381. power

  1382. are with

  1383. us

  1384. because

  1385. not because

  1386. we are

  1387. better than

  1388. others

  1389. but because

  1390. God chose

  1391. through Christ

  1392. to make

  1393. his enemies

  1394. his people

  1395. and so

  1396. that's why

  1397. Paul tells

  1398. us in

  1399. Romans chapter

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  1400. 5 that

  1401. it was

  1402. while we

  1403. were enemies

  1404. that Christ

  1405. died for us

  1406. and so

  1407. that's our

  1408. hope

  1409. and our

  1410. encouragement

  1411. it's what

  1412. we cling

  1413. to

  1414. as we

  1415. go out

  1416. on God's

  1417. mission

  1418. because we

  1419. know that

  1420. as we

  1421. seek to

  1422. have impact

  1423. as we

  1424. follow after

  1425. Jesus

  1426. it's because

  1427. of him

  1428. and his

  1429. death

  1430. that we

  1431. are able

  1432. to face

  1433. the opposition

  1434. that comes

  1435. against us

  1436. and so

  1437. that's our

  1438. great hope

  1439. and our

  1440. prayer

  1441. and our

  1442. dream

  1443. please pray

  1444. with me

  1445. dear father

  1446. in heaven

  1447. we

  1448. just thank

  1449. you for

  1450. the opportunity

  1451. to belong

  1452. to you

  1453. thank you

  1454. that you

  1455. allow us

  1456. to be

  1457. a part

  1458. of your

  1459. work

  1460. and your

  1461. mission

  1462. in this

  1463. world

  1464. we know

  1465. we don't

  1466. deserve it

  1467. we haven't

  1468. earned it

  1469. but you

  1470. give us

  1471. the privilege

  1472. of doing

  1473. it

  1474. so we

  1475. thank you

  1476. we ask

  1477. that you

  1478. would use

  1479. that to

  1480. encourage

  1481. us

  1482. even as

  1483. we face

  1484. obstacles

  1485. and enemies

  1486. as we

  1487. pursue

  1488. your will

  1489. and your

  1490. ways

  1491. we ask

  1492. all these

  1493. things in

  1494. the name

  1495. of your

  1496. son

  1497. amen

  1498. you

  1499. and

  1500. you

  1501. you

  1502. you

  1503. you

  1504. you
