  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  4. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  5. We are glad you're here.

  6. And we're glad you're here not because you are filling a seat,

  7. but because we are following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And so we're convinced that as we follow Jesus together,

  9. that there is no one so good that they don't need God's grace.

  10. And no one so bad they can't have it.

  11. And so God has something to say to every one of us in His Word,

  12. and every one of us needs to hear what God has to say.

  13. If you've been with us, you know that we are going through the book of Nehemiah.

  14. The book of Nehemiah is a book about a man named Nehemiah

  15. who lived during the 5th century B.C.

  16. And it's a story about him realizing the ways that Israel,

  17. God's people in the Old Testament, had abandoned God and His ways,

  18. and that had been shown through many things.

  19. But one of the ways it had been shown was that God's city, Jerusalem,

  20. which God had set to make a light to the nations for everyone in the world

  21. to see what it's like when God's people follow God's ways,

  22. God's people had neglected and abandoned Jerusalem.

  23. And even though they'd been back from exile for almost 100 years,

  24. the wall around Jerusalem was in shambles.

  25. We met Nehemiah in chapter 1,

  26. and he was weeping and crying and fasting and praying in repentance

  27. over the ways that God's people had abandoned His city.

  28. And then in chapter 2 and 3,

  29. we saw God's people returning to the work of rebuilding the wall.

  30. And last week, we saw the opposition that happens

  31. when we return to God's mission.

  32. And now we come to Nehemiah chapter 5,

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  33. and we have a problem that's a different problem than the wall.

  34. It's been exciting so far.

  35. We've seen God's people coming together,

  36. working hard, putting aside their differences

  37. so that they can have one mission despite their differences.

  38. But now they're going to face a different struggle,

  39. a different problem.

  40. Not opposition from the outside,

  41. but problems on the inside.

  42. Now, as some of you know,

  43. one of my brothers is in the reserves.

  44. He's in the Army Reserves.

  45. He used to be in the Army National Guard.

  46. And so he was only working part-time in that way,

  47. and so he tried to find out

  48. what it was he was going to do for his full-time job,

  49. what he was going to do during the week

  50. when he wasn't a weekend warrior.

  51. And he finally settled on doing military contracting,

  52. and so that's his work that he pursues.

  53. But while he was trying to figure it out,

  54. there were a lot of different options that he looked at.

  55. And one of them was becoming a state trooper.

  56. And so as he explored this opportunity,

  57. he became friends with some state troopers,

  58. and he decided to do what's called a ride-along,

  59. where you join a state trooper for their shift,

  60. you ride along in the car,

  61. you get to see the different things

  62. that they handle and experience.

  63. And he had one man in particular

  64. who taught him a lot of things,

  65. and one of the things he taught him was this.

  66. If someone's car is a mess,

  67. their life is also a mess as well.

  68. And I don't mean that you have a messy car.

  69. Many of us have messy cars.

  70. But he's talking about the fact

  71. that if you're driving along

  72. and you see someone's license plate

  73. and it's been expired for several years,

  74. or they're not able to keep up

  75. basic maintenance on their car,

  76. there's often something else that's going on as well.

  77. I-95, which is a major highway in the East Coast,

  78. is a huge route for drug trafficking.

  79. And there's millions of dollars of cocaine

  80. that's taken back and forth on that road.

  81. And so as my brother explained it to me,

  82. he said,

  83. if you are taking millions of dollars of cocaine

  84. up the highway,

  85. you don't really have time

  86. to worry about your taillight.

  87. In fact, the biggest cocaine bust

  88. in Charles County, Maryland,

  89. happened with, I believe,

  90. this officer that my brother knew.

  91. It was because of a taillight pullover.

  92. And so police know this truth

  93. that physical problems

  94. often point to spiritual problems as well.

  95. You pull someone over

  96. for a physical problem with their car,

  97. a lack of registration,

  98. or a mechanical failure,

  99. and you find out

  100. that they have a warrant for their arrest,

  101. for failure to pay child support,

  102. a warrant for failure to appear in court.

  103. Or perhaps they're smuggling

  104. large amounts of cocaine

  105. from south to north and north to south.

  106. And that's the issue that we see here

  107. as we come to Nehemiah chapter 5.

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  108. On the one hand,

  109. God's people have abandoned his wall.

  110. And that was the repentance

  111. that Nehemiah had in chapter 1.

  112. But they have not just abandoned God's wall,

  113. they've also abandoned God's ways.

  114. They haven't just abandoned God's wall,

  115. they've also abandoned his ways.

  116. And so this physical ruin of the wall

  117. points to a much deeper spiritual ruin

  118. that has happened in Israel.

  119. And so physical ruin

  120. and spiritual ruin are paired.

  121. As the police know,

  122. it's often things that travel together,

  123. often things that travel along.

  124. And so we're going to look

  125. at Nehemiah chapter 5,

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  126. and we're going to see

  127. not the external problems

  128. of their enemies coming in

  129. and threatening them

  130. and attacking them,

  131. not the physical problem

  132. of the wall that's broken down

  133. and shameful,

  134. but the internal spiritual problem

  135. as God's people,

  136. while they're on the one hand

  137. rebuilding something that's physical,

  138. they have deep problems

  139. that are spiritual,

  140. and the two are related.

  141. They have chosen to value

  142. possessions over people,

  143. property over people,

  144. profit over people.

  145. And that's what we're going to encounter

  146. as we come to Nehemiah chapter 5.

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  147. I'm going to be reading

  148. starting at verse 1.

  149. If you have your worship guide,

  150. you'll find Nehemiah chapter 5

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  151. printed there,

  152. or you can follow along

  153. in your Bible.

  154. Remember that as we come

  155. to this passage,

  156. this is God's word.

  157. And God tells us

  158. that his word is a hammer

  159. that breaks a rock into pieces.

  160. In other words,

  161. God's word is so powerful

  162. that there is nothing

  163. that can stand against it.

  164. And so I'm going to read

  165. starting with Nehemiah chapter 5,

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  166. starting at verse 1.

  167. Please read with me.

  168. Now there arose

  169. a great outcry of the people

  170. and of their wives

  171. against their Jewish brothers.

  172. For there were those who said,

  173. With our sons and our daughters

  174. we are many,

  175. so let us get grain

  176. that we may eat

  177. and keep alive.

  178. There were also those who said,

  179. We are mortgaging our fields,

  180. our vineyards,

  181. and our houses

  182. to get grain

  183. because of the famine.

  184. And there were those who said,

  185. We have borrowed money

  186. for the king's tax

  187. on our fields and our vineyards.

  188. Now our flesh

  189. is as the flesh

  190. of our brothers,

  191. our children

  192. are as their children.

  193. Yet we are forcing

  194. our sons and our daughters

  195. to be slaves.

  196. And some of our daughters

  197. have already been enslaved.

  198. But it is not in our power

  199. to help it,

  200. for other men

  201. have our fields

  202. and our vineyards.

  203. Verse 6.

  204. I was very angry

  205. when I heard their outcry

  206. in these words.

  207. I took counsel with myself

  208. and I brought charges

  209. against the nobles

  210. and the officials.

  211. I said to them,

  212. You are exacting interest,

  213. each from his brother.

  214. And I held a great assembly

  215. against them

  216. and said to them,

  217. We, as far as we are able,

  218. have bought back

  219. our Jewish brothers

  220. who have been sold

  221. to the nations.

  222. But you even sell your brothers

  223. that they may be sold to us.

  224. They were silent

  225. and could not find

  226. a word to say.

  227. Verse 9.

  228. So I said,

  229. The thing that you are doing

  230. is not good.

  231. Ought you not to walk

  232. in the fear of our God

  233. to prevent the taunts

  234. of the nations,

  235. our enemies?

  236. Moreover,

  237. I and my brothers

  238. and my servants

  239. are lending them

  240. money and grain.

  241. Let us abandon

  242. this exacting of interest.

  243. Return to them

  244. this very day

  245. their fields,

  246. their vineyards,

  247. their olive orchards,

  248. and their houses.

  249. And the percentage of money

  250. grain,

  251. wine,

  252. and oil

  253. that you have been

  254. exacting from them.

  255. Verse 12.

  256. Then they said,

  257. We will restore these

  258. and require nothing from them.

  259. We will do as you say.

  260. And I called the priests

  261. and made them swear to do

  262. as they had promised.

  263. I also shook out

  264. the fold of my garment

  265. and said,

  266. So may God shake out

  267. every man from his house

  268. and from his labor

  269. who does not keep this promise.

  270. So may he be shaken out

  271. and emptied.

  272. And all the assembly

  273. said amen

  274. and praised the Lord.

  275. And the people did

  276. as they had promised.

  277. Verse 14.

  278. Moreover,

  279. from the time

  280. that I was appointed

  281. to be their governor

  282. in the land of Judah,

  283. from the twentieth year

  284. to the thirty-second year

  285. of Artaxerxes the king,

  286. twelve years,

  287. neither I nor my brothers

  288. ate the food allowance

  289. of the governor.

  290. The former governors

  291. who were before me

  292. laid heavy burdens

  293. on the people

  294. and took from them

  295. for their daily ration

  296. forty shekels of silver.

  297. Even their servants

  298. lorded it over the people.

  299. But I did not do so

  300. because of the fear of God.

  301. Verse 16.

  302. I also persevered

  303. in the work on this wall

  304. and we acquired no land.

  305. And all my servants

  306. were gathered there

  307. for the work.

  308. Moreover,

  309. there were at my table

  310. a hundred and fifty men,

  311. Jews and officials,

  312. besides those who came to us

  313. from the nations

  314. that were around us.

  315. Now what was prepared

  316. at my expense

  317. for each day

  318. was one ox

  319. and six choice sheep

  320. and birds

  321. and every ten days

  322. all kinds of wine

  323. in abundance.

  324. Yet for all this

  325. I did not demand

  326. the food allowance

  327. of the governor

  328. because the service

  329. was too heavy

  330. on this people.

  331. Remember for my good,

  332. oh my God,

  333. all that I have done

  334. for this people.

  335. Please pray with me

  336. as we come

  337. to this portion

  338. of God's word.

  339. Dear Father in Heaven,

  340. we thank you

  341. and praise you

  342. that you haven't

  343. left us alone.

  344. You do not allow us

  345. to stay

  346. in our spiritual ruin,

  347. but you've come to us

  348. in Christ

  349. to meet us

  350. with your grace.

  351. We ask that you

  352. would do that right now,

  353. that you would send

  354. your Holy Spirit

  355. to help us,

  356. that we would be able

  357. to hear

  358. and believe

  359. and understand

  360. and follow everything

  361. that you have for us

  362. in your word.

  363. We ask this

  364. in Jesus' name.

  365. Amen.

  366. If you remember

  367. from last week,

  368. things were exciting

  369. as God's people

  370. came together

  371. and they put aside

  372. their differences

  373. so that they could

  374. work together

  375. as one community,

  376. even as their enemies

  377. came up against them.

  378. God's hand was with them.

  379. Things were moving forward

  380. and yet at the very end

  381. we have this one verse,

  382. verse 22,

  383. chapter 4.

  384. Where Nehemiah asks

  385. everyone to spend

  386. the night

  387. in the city of Jerusalem.

  388. This seems like

  389. a great idea

  390. and it was

  391. because they make sure

  392. that they do not give in

  393. to the voices around them

  394. that are encouraging them

  395. to abandon the work

  396. and yet this has created

  397. a problem.

  398. If all the men

  399. are sleeping in the city

  400. and if they've been

  401. working for months now

  402. on the wall,

  403. what have they not

  404. been doing?

  405. There's no indication

  406. that Nehemiah

  407. has been paying them

  408. on the one hand

  409. and yet on the other hand

  410. they have not been

  411. working their fields.

  412. All this has been

  413. great so far.

  414. It was, remember,

  415. April when Nehemiah

  416. came back to Jerusalem.

  417. He's recruited all these

  418. Israelites to work

  419. diligently.

  420. But now as it comes

  421. near the end of the summer

  422. and the beginning

  423. of the fall,

  424. this is harvest season.

  425. And not only is it

  426. harvest season,

  427. it's even worse than that

  428. because at the end

  429. of the harvest season

  430. is when debtors

  431. would have to pay

  432. their debts.

  433. And so it's all

  434. fun and games

  435. until the debt collector

  436. comes.

  437. It's wonderful

  438. to work on God's wall

  439. on the one hand

  440. except when you've

  441. abandoned your family

  442. fields on the other.

  443. And so there's a real

  444. physical need

  445. that's arisen among

  446. these people

  447. and as they come

  448. to the time

  449. when they have to

  450. pay their debts

  451. they realize

  452. what they're up against.

  453. There's a reason

  454. most likely in verse

  455. one of chapter five

  456. that the wives

  457. especially are upset

  458. about this

  459. because they're the ones

  460. who were left at home.

  461. The men have been

  462. working hard

  463. having great success

  464. and yet it's their wives

  465. who know that the harvest

  466. has not been brought in

  467. in the way it needs to.

  468. They've been faithful

  469. to God's commands

  470. to be fruitful

  471. and multiply

  472. in verse two

  473. but yet that's created

  474. a problem.

  475. They have many sons

  476. and daughters

  477. which means they have

  478. many mouths to feed.

  479. These brothers

  480. that they're complaining

  481. against in verse one

  482. are the rich brothers.

  483. And so there's

  484. those in Jerusalem

  485. who have the resources

  486. to be able to feed

  487. their family

  488. and continue working

  489. on the wall

  490. and then there's those

  491. who do not have

  492. those resources.

  493. And so the poor

  494. have been taken advantage

  495. of by the rich.

  496. There's a variety

  497. of people

  498. in different situations.

  499. So in verse three

  500. we see that there are people

  501. who have mortgaged

  502. their property

  503. to get the food

  504. that they need

  505. for their family.

  506. In verse four

  507. we have people

  508. that have a different problem.

  509. They have tremendous taxes

  510. that the Persian government

  511. is putting on them

  512. that they need to pay.

  513. And in verse five

  514. we meet the worst situation

  515. of all.

  516. There are people

  517. in Israel and Jerusalem

  518. to feed their family

  519. to be able to keep

  520. their property.

  521. They've even been putting

  522. out their children

  523. as slaves

  524. not to the nations.

  525. They've had to put out

  526. their children

  527. to work for other families

  528. so that they can pay

  529. their debts

  530. and continue to have

  531. the food on the table

  532. that they need.

  533. What's happening

  534. is that we have

  535. rich people

  536. who are taking advantage

  537. of this situation

  538. and taking what

  539. the poor people have.

  540. Rather than helping them out

  541. rather than trying

  542. to be there

  543. when they need them

  544. there are Israelites here

  545. who care much more

  546. about profit

  547. and possessions

  548. than they care about people.

  549. They see this problem

  550. this building of the wall

  551. as an opportunity

  552. for them to become rich

  553. rather than an opportunity

  554. to watch out

  555. for their family members.

  556. And this is the scandal

  557. that Nehemiah confronts.

  558. It's why in verse 6

  559. we find out

  560. that he was very angry

  561. because he looks out

  562. on what God's people

  563. are doing to each other

  564. and he sees

  565. not them bringing

  566. God's kingdom

  567. on earth

  568. as it is in heaven

  569. but instead

  570. he sees them using this

  571. as an opportunity

  572. for their profit.

  573. But Nehemiah knows

  574. that God

  575. cares much more

  576. about people

  577. than he does

  578. about possessions

  579. or property.

  580. Nehemiah knows

  581. that God

  582. cares so much more

  583. about people

  584. than he does

  585. about possessions

  586. and property.

  587. And yet he also knows

  588. in this passage

  589. remind us

  590. that our temptation

  591. as people

  592. under sin

  593. who struggle with sin

  594. our temptation

  595. is to instead

  596. care more about

  597. property than people.

  598. Nehemiah knows

  599. that God

  600. cares more

  601. about people

  602. than property

  603. and yet the people

  604. are tempted

  605. to care more

  606. about their property

  607. than people.

  608. Now we're going to

  609. talk in a minute

  610. about specifically

  611. what's going on here.

  612. This is specifically

  613. about predatory lending

  614. and yet generally

  615. we have the principle

  616. of people

  617. over everything else.

  618. I had the chance

  619. a few years ago

  620. to be at someone's house

  621. they were hosting

  622. a time

  623. for a breakfast

  624. there were friends

  625. that were together

  626. gathered to enjoy

  627. some food

  628. and tea

  629. and coffee together

  630. and they were all

  631. working together

  632. to help make this happen.

  633. And at one point

  634. the host asked

  635. one of his friends

  636. would you heat the water

  637. for us

  638. so that we can

  639. make the drinks

  640. that we need

  641. and so this guest

  642. it was early in the morning

  643. he had not fully woken up

  644. he didn't have

  645. all his senses with him

  646. and so he took

  647. the electric tea kettle

  648. off of the electric charger

  649. and he put it

  650. on the stove

  651. the gas stove

  652. and then he turned

  653. on the burner

  654. after he'd put water in it

  655. and so this

  656. tea kettle began

  657. to slowly melt

  658. into the gas burner

  659. and by the time

  660. this had happened

  661. it was too late

  662. for that tea kettle.

  663. Someone realized

  664. there was a

  665. scramble

  666. a shuffle

  667. someone quickly

  668. turned off the oven

  669. pulled the tea kettle

  670. off

  671. the smell

  672. of burned rubber

  673. was filling

  674. the breakfast room

  675. and of course

  676. this half asleep man

  677. was just so embarrassed

  678. and devastated

  679. trying to apologize

  680. offering to buy

  681. a new kettle

  682. repaying

  683. and the host

  684. simply said this

  685. he said

  686. I bought this

  687. tea kettle

  688. and the reason

  689. I bought it

  690. was because

  691. I wanted to have

  692. friends in my house

  693. and so this

  694. tea kettle

  695. has served

  696. its purpose

  697. I would rather

  698. have you here

  699. in my house

  700. with me

  701. having breakfast

  702. with me

  703. than have that

  704. tea kettle

  705. and if I had

  706. to choose

  707. between having

  708. a perfect tea kettle

  709. and having you

  710. here with me

  711. in your friendship

  712. I would choose

  713. you every time

  714. as a friend

  715. tried to

  716. offer to

  717. replace

  718. this tea kettle

  719. the host

  720. just refused

  721. said no

  722. I have these

  723. possessions

  724. for the sake

  725. of this community

  726. I have them

  727. here for people

  728. and so I've

  729. gotten more

  730. than my money's

  731. worth

  732. out of this

  733. tea kettle

  734. because I was

  735. able to have

  736. you in this

  737. house

  738. Nehemiah knows

  739. that God

  740. cares more

  741. about people

  742. than possessions

  743. he knows

  744. that God's

  745. heart

  746. is for the

  747. community

  748. and that

  749. profit is not

  750. the bottom line

  751. that he calls

  752. the people

  753. who follow him

  754. to

  755. Nehemiah's

  756. outrage

  757. is justified

  758. and so he

  759. comes

  760. not just

  761. with anger

  762. but with

  763. charges

  764. in verse

  765. 7

  766. they are

  767. using this

  768. opportunity

  769. to gain

  770. money

  771. rather than

  772. showing

  773. mercy

  774. and so

  775. Nehemiah

  776. points out

  777. the shame

  778. of this

  779. situation

  780. you are

  781. exacting

  782. verse 7

  783. interest

  784. each from

  785. his brother

  786. and then he

  787. reminds them

  788. that they've

  789. been doing

  790. all this

  791. work to

  792. buy their

  793. brothers

  794. back from

  795. slavery

  796. to the

  797. other

  798. nations

  799. and so

  800. what they're

  801. doing

  802. with one

  803. hand

  804. they're undoing

  805. with the

  806. other

  807. Nehemiah

  808. doesn't

  809. mention

  810. this

  811. here

  812. but if

  813. you're

  814. familiar

  815. with

  816. Old Testament

  817. Israel

  818. you know

  819. that it

  820. was actually

  821. forbidden

  822. for Israelites

  823. to exact

  824. interest

  825. from each

  826. other

  827. now the

  828. context of

  829. these laws

  830. in Deuteronomy

  831. and Leviticus

  832. was mainly

  833. focused around

  834. protecting people

  835. who were in

  836. great need

  837. people who were

  838. in poverty

  839. from being

  840. taken advantage

  841. of

  842. so commercial

  843. lending

  844. wasn't forbidden

  845. it was typically

  846. practiced

  847. not within the

  848. Israelite community

  849. but they would

  850. have commercial

  851. lending with other

  852. communities

  853. other nations

  854. outside of it

  855. but the goal

  856. the point

  857. of these laws

  858. was for

  859. the poor

  860. to be protected

  861. people who were

  862. in dangerous

  863. situations

  864. who were in

  865. need

  866. would be able

  867. to get the

  868. resources they

  869. needed without

  870. someone using

  871. that as a chance

  872. to extract

  873. even more money

  874. from them

  875. but what we see

  876. here is that

  877. instead of

  878. following the

  879. rules about

  880. not charging

  881. interest for

  882. fellow Israelites

  883. they are doing

  884. participating in

  885. what we would

  886. call today

  887. predatory lending

  888. they are lending

  889. in such a way

  890. that the very

  891. children of their

  892. brothers and

  893. sisters

  894. are having to

  895. work off the

  896. debt

  897. they are lending

  898. in such a way

  899. that the very

  900. lands that these

  901. people need to

  902. support themselves

  903. are being taken

  904. away

  905. and when Nehemiah

  906. brings this in

  907. front of them

  908. they realize that

  909. he is right

  910. it says in verse

  911. 8 because of

  912. their shame here

  913. it says they were

  914. silent and could

  915. not find a word

  916. to say

  917. they know that

  918. Nehemiah's

  919. rebuke his

  920. correction is

  921. correct

  922. and so he

  923. commands them

  924. there to return

  925. their fields

  926. and in verse 12

  927. everyone turns

  928. back and says

  929. we will restore

  930. these and require

  931. nothing from them

  932. we will do as you

  933. say

  934. they are not just

  935. breaking even here

  936. instead they are

  937. turning away from

  938. sin and turning back

  939. to righteousness

  940. they are not just

  941. ceasing to gain

  942. money from the

  943. poor

  944. but these lenders

  945. are now actually

  946. going to lose

  947. money

  948. they are giving

  949. back everything

  950. that they had

  951. loaned

  952. and they are not

  953. going to make

  954. any money off of

  955. it

  956. they are giving

  957. back the land

  958. they are giving

  959. back the interest

  960. that was charged

  961. and what was

  962. originally given

  963. as a loan

  964. is now going

  965. to be given

  966. as a gift

  967. we saw Nehemiah

  968. in chapter 1

  969. turning back

  970. from sin

  971. and turning

  972. towards God

  973. and we see

  974. here that that's

  975. not something

  976. that just happens

  977. once

  978. it's not just

  979. something that

  980. happens over

  981. the wall

  982. but it's

  983. something that

  984. God's people

  985. do over

  986. and over

  987. again

  988. this is not

  989. going to be

  990. this is not

  991. the first time

  992. we've seen

  993. God's people

  994. repent

  995. in the book

  996. of Nehemiah

  997. and it's far

  998. away from the

  999. last time

  1000. we're going

  1001. to see them

  1002. repent

  1003. but they're

  1004. taking part

  1005. in the process

  1006. of turning

  1007. away from

  1008. sin

  1009. and turning

  1010. back to

  1011. God

  1012. and they're

  1013. also highlighting

  1014. this principle

  1015. not just

  1016. that as we've

  1017. already seen

  1018. God cares more

  1019. about people

  1020. than profit

  1021. but there's

  1022. a second

  1023. principle here

  1024. a principle

  1025. against predatory

  1026. lending

  1027. that accumulation

  1028. of wealth

  1029. is never

  1030. something that

  1031. should happen

  1032. at the expense

  1033. of other people

  1034. accumulation

  1035. is wealth

  1036. is not something

  1037. that we do

  1038. to take advantage

  1039. of the poor

  1040. now the Bible

  1041. is very clear

  1042. God is

  1043. eager for his

  1044. people to work

  1045. hard

  1046. to save money

  1047. to have

  1048. private property

  1049. he's just

  1050. not eager

  1051. for them

  1052. to do

  1053. that at

  1054. the expense

  1055. of people

  1056. who are

  1057. downtrodden

  1058. and so

  1059. what we see

  1060. here

  1061. the principle

  1062. in today

  1063. would be

  1064. that places

  1065. like pawn

  1066. shops

  1067. payday loans

  1068. even certain

  1069. types of

  1070. credit cards

  1071. are instruments

  1072. that the rich

  1073. use to take

  1074. advantage of

  1075. the poor

  1076. God is not

  1077. opposed to

  1078. people making

  1079. profit

  1080. he's not

  1081. opposed to

  1082. people lending

  1083. he's not

  1084. even opposed

  1085. to interest

  1086. but his

  1087. bottom line

  1088. is people

  1089. his bottom

  1090. line is

  1091. people over

  1092. profit

  1093. every single

  1094. time

  1095. and so

  1096. what we see

  1097. here is that

  1098. previously we

  1099. had people

  1100. gaining from

  1101. others losses

  1102. and now we

  1103. see as they

  1104. turn away from

  1105. their sin and

  1106. back to repentance

  1107. they are losing

  1108. so that other

  1109. people can gain

  1110. they're not

  1111. gaining from

  1112. others losses

  1113. they're now

  1114. losing so that

  1115. other people can

  1116. gain

  1117. because they

  1118. know that in

  1119. God's economy

  1120. and God's

  1121. world

  1122. God cares so

  1123. much more

  1124. about the

  1125. people he's

  1126. made in his

  1127. image than

  1128. anything they

  1129. can accumulate

  1130. at each

  1131. other's cost

  1132. Nehemiah

  1133. doesn't just

  1134. call out the

  1135. nobles around

  1136. him

  1137. he doesn't

  1138. just try to

  1139. return to

  1140. God's ways

  1141. and his

  1142. mercy

  1143. but then he

  1144. sets an

  1145. example in

  1146. the rest of

  1147. this chapter

  1148. we're told

  1149. about his

  1150. generosity in

  1151. verses 14

  1152. through 19

  1153. and we

  1154. find out that

  1155. Nehemiah has

  1156. an allowance

  1157. that he's

  1158. allowed to

  1159. collect

  1160. he's actually

  1161. a governor

  1162. he's been

  1163. given a

  1164. political position

  1165. in the

  1166. Persian Empire

  1167. remember we

  1168. talked in

  1169. chapters 1

  1170. and 2

  1171. about the

  1172. fact that he

  1173. was a

  1174. cup bearer

  1175. which was

  1176. an incredibly

  1177. powerful position

  1178. in the

  1179. Persian Empire

  1180. he goes from

  1181. one political

  1182. position to

  1183. another

  1184. and as a

  1185. Persian official

  1186. and as an

  1187. Israelite he

  1188. has the

  1189. right to

  1190. take a certain

  1191. allowance from

  1192. the people

  1193. and it's not

  1194. even an allowance

  1195. that's for his

  1196. good it's not

  1197. an allowance that

  1198. he's going to

  1199. use for his

  1200. own profit

  1201. it's actually an

  1202. allowance that's

  1203. there for his

  1204. responsibilities

  1205. we find out that

  1206. he's responsible for

  1207. serving all kinds

  1208. of people

  1209. he's responsible for

  1210. providing dinner

  1211. for those who

  1212. serve under him

  1213. and then he's

  1214. responsible for

  1215. entertaining diplomats

  1216. and foreign

  1217. dignitaries who

  1218. come into town

  1219. so this is a

  1220. right allowance

  1221. that he has

  1222. there's nothing

  1223. wrong with a

  1224. government giving

  1225. one of their

  1226. officials the

  1227. resources they

  1228. need to carry

  1229. out their job

  1230. in fact some of

  1231. you have this at

  1232. your jobs as well

  1233. you have expense

  1234. accounts so that

  1235. you can do

  1236. business and not

  1237. take it out of

  1238. your family budget

  1239. but Nehemiah

  1240. chooses to do

  1241. something very

  1242. different

  1243. knowing the

  1244. poverty of the

  1245. people around

  1246. him

  1247. knowing their

  1248. struggle to feed

  1249. their own

  1250. families

  1251. let alone feed

  1252. these dignitaries

  1253. he decides to

  1254. take it out of

  1255. his own bank

  1256. account

  1257. so Nehemiah

  1258. takes the money

  1259. that he's given

  1260. the money that

  1261. gets direct

  1262. deposited into

  1263. his checking

  1264. account

  1265. it's already been

  1266. taxed

  1267. he's already

  1268. paid the

  1269. IRS

  1270. and he decides

  1271. he has enough

  1272. that he's going

  1273. to be able to

  1274. support all these

  1275. tasks that are

  1276. before him

  1277. not because he

  1278. has the right

  1279. to

  1280. but because he's

  1281. so eager

  1282. to know that his

  1283. brothers and

  1284. sisters are not

  1285. coming into

  1286. greater poverty

  1287. because of this

  1288. we find out here

  1289. that Nehemiah

  1290. must be extremely

  1291. wealthy

  1292. there's indications

  1293. previously in the

  1294. chapter that he

  1295. comes from an

  1296. influential family

  1297. that may be why

  1298. he ended up

  1299. being a cupbearer

  1300. and so he chooses

  1301. here to

  1302. use his wealth

  1303. for the sake of

  1304. the poor

  1305. uses his wealth

  1306. to care

  1307. for those who

  1308. would not otherwise

  1309. be able to feed

  1310. their families

  1311. and so he takes

  1312. it out of his

  1313. very own

  1314. his very own

  1315. bank account

  1316. the author of

  1317. Nehemiah is making

  1318. clear to us that

  1319. God cares about

  1320. people he cares

  1321. about the poor

  1322. and as we come

  1323. against the sin

  1324. that Israel

  1325. struggled with

  1326. there's another

  1327. reality that is

  1328. sobering

  1329. and that's the

  1330. reality of sin

  1331. within God's

  1332. people

  1333. there's a

  1334. tempting belief

  1335. that some people

  1336. have called the

  1337. myth of Christendom

  1338. that if somehow

  1339. we can separate

  1340. ourselves from

  1341. all the non-Christians

  1342. in the world

  1343. if somehow we can

  1344. get away from all

  1345. those sinners out

  1346. there then we will

  1347. be free of polluting

  1348. influences we'll be

  1349. able to be free

  1350. from sin finally

1351. if we can just keep

  1352. ourselves and our

  1353. families away from

  1354. people who have

  1355. wrong behavior and

  1356. wrong ideas then

  1357. we'll be safe

  1358. and yet here in

  1359. Nehemiah chapter 5

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  1360. we have the remnant

  1361. we have those who

  1362. did not rebel against

1363. God who made it out

  1364. of exile those who

  1365. have returned to

  1366. God's cities and

  1367. separated themselves

  1368. from the nations

  1369. and yet the reality

1370. of sin and greed is

  1371. still in their

  1372. hearts they've not

  1373. been able to escape

  1374. sin just by escaping

  1375. people who are not

  1376. Israelites what we'll

  1377. have already seen in

  1378. the book of Nehemiah

  1379. and what we will

  1380. continue to see is

  1381. sin is not something

1382. that is outside of us

1383. that gets in but sin

  1384. is something that is

  1385. inside of us that

1386. gets out sin is not

  1387. something that is

  1388. outside of us that

1389. gets in but it is

  1390. something inside of

1391. us that gets out and

  1392. so separating ourselves

  1393. from other people is

1394. not going to be our

  1395. solution it's not going

  1396. to be our redemption

  1397. and there are reformed

  1398. people who claim to

  1399. believe in original sin

1400. that still fall prey to

1401. this way of thinking that

  1402. somehow sin is these

  1403. other people out there

1404. that we need to escape

1405. and yet if that were

  1406. true then Jesus would

1407. not have needed to come

1408. and die if all God's

1409. people needed to do is

1410. get out of Babylon and

1411. get back to God's city so

1412. they could be safe from

  1413. sin then there would

1414. have been no need for a

1415. savior to come and help

1416. them and so the cure for

  1417. our selfishness the cure

1418. for our temptation to put

1419. profit ahead of people is

  1420. not to separate ourself

  1421. from selfish people

1422. because that in and of

  1423. itself is selfish but

  1424. instead it's to understand

1425. and realize our need for

1426. the gospel our need for

1427. God and his grace to

  1428. come and change our

  1429. hearts that we would

  1430. actually care about what

1431. he cares about that we

  1432. would care about people

  1433. more than profit that

1434. would be our bottom line

  1435. I mentioned earlier the

  1436. laws in Deuteronomy and

  1437. Leviticus that for

  1438. forbid the charging of

  1439. interest to fellow

  1440. Israelites the laws don't

1441. just talk about interest in

  1442. Israelites and how they're

1443. going to behave as one

  1444. community together but it

  1445. also in Deuteronomy chapter

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

1446. 17 talks about the king

1447. that's going to one day

1448. come to Israel and it

  1449. outlines the qualifications

1450. for this king what has to

1451. be true about him there's

1452. many things we find out

1453. he's not going to collect

1454. horses from Egypt but the

1455. very last thing that this

1456. king will not do is he's

1457. not going to amass silver

1458. and gold he's not going to

1459. use his position and power

  1460. to accumulate wealth for

  1461. himself instead this king

1462. that's going to come the

1463. king that's going to rule

1464. Israel is going to be a

1465. king that looks out for the

1466. good of the people above

1467. himself we see some of that

1468. with the Israelite kings who

1469. come along and yet they also

1470. fail some of them do

  1471. accumulate wealth for

1472. themselves most of them do

  1473. rather than using their

  1474. wealth to serve the

  1475. community God's given them

1476. to lead and so the ideal

  1477. king that Deuteronomy 17

1478. looks forward to the ideal

1479. king that God's people here

1480. need and the ideal king that

1481. we celebrate as well is Jesus

1482. he's the king who had all

1483. wealth all power he had

1484. everything and no reason to

1485. give it up and yet he lost

1486. all of it he did not just

  1487. refuse to acquire excessive

1488. silver and gold as Deuteronomy

1489. 17 forbids but he actually gave

1490. up everything he gave up

1491. everything to live life as a

1492. real man in this in this world in

1493. time and space in history and

1494. rather than coming and having

1495. wealth he grew up without without

1496. much of anything he's famous for

1497. being born in a stable and then he

1498. goes on not just to give up his

1499. wealth but everything else so that

1500. he can die and take the punishment

1501. that we deserve the punishment that

1502. we deserve for valuing profit over

1503. people so that he could one day lead

1504. us that we could value people over

1505. profit as we look at this passage

1506. and we see the challenge of our

1507. hearts the challenge that doesn't

1508. come from the world around us but

1509. the sin that's in us there is only

1510. one hope for us we cannot simply

1511. drag ourselves up by our bootstraps

1512. and decide to become more generous

1513. that will simply make us more

  1514. self-righteous we can't find a

1515. 12-step program to overcome our our

1516. greed and ignoring the people around

1517. us but instead the only way that we

1518. will be able to have the generosity

1519. here that nehemiah has is when we

1520. understand and know and believe how

1521. much we are in poverty and have needed

1522. Jesus to come and save us in the past

1523. and continue to save us now and when

1524. we understand that God has rescued us

1525. that he has refused to charge interest

1526. on us then we will be able to lose so

1527. that other people can gain in 2007

1528. there was a everyday marriage that

1529. happened just like people marry every

1530. weekend in this nation and yet this

1531. marriage made it all the way into

1532. national news it was in Michigan and a

1533. woman named Christine and a man named

1534. Kyle decided they were going to they were

1535. going to marry each other and that's

1536. normal but they decided to do

1537. something that was not normal

1538. rather than simply feeding their

1539. guests who came to join them they

1540. decided they were going to put their

1541. guests to work Christine and Kyle had

1542. met at this church in the neighborhood

  1543. they'd met through a neighborhood

1544. outreach ministry and so they were

1545. serving side by side this church was

1546. actually a church that administered to

1547. them as well Christine was a single

1548. mom with two kids Kyle had been

1549. through struggles with addictions and

1550. they met each other in this ministry

1551. and they decided we want to not just

1552. serve our guests but we want to serve

1553. this neighborhood and so instead of

1554. having our guests come and sit down at

1555. long tables what we're going to have

1556. them do is actually serve food to

1557. people outside of the wedding people

1558. in the neighborhood families that need

1559. food to feed to eat to survive and so

1560. they spread the word silently quietly

1561. through the neighborhood that people

1562. would know when to show up at the

1563. church and after the wedding was over

1564. they put on bride and groom cooking

1565. aprons and they went outside and they

1566. served everyone through the line now I

1567. am not saying that if you have a

1568. wedding you need to do this what I am

1569. saying is that what God told Abraham in

1570. Genesis 12 that he was going to bless

1571. him so that he could be a blessing is

1572. true of us as well our great hope is we

1573. look forward to Jesus second coming is

1574. that we would sit around his marriage

1575. feast what's called in Revelation the

1576. marriage feast of the lamb but it's not

1577. just a marriage feast that God has done

1578. for our good but it's also for his

1579. glory and so he invites his people not

1580. just to save us from sin but to save us

1581. to his mission saving us to be that

1582. blessing that he has given to the world

1583. Kyle and Christine understood that God

1584. had rescued them they'd experienced in

1585. their own lives they were experiencing

1586. it as they were marrying each other and

1587. their pastor said this people who haven't

1588. seen them for a while that is wedding

1589. guests will recognize them by the way

1590. they look on the outside but they won't

1591. recognize them on the inside when we know

1592. and understand and believe that God has

1593. rescued us from poverty we will have no

1594. choice but to look to those who are losing

1595. and lose so that they can gain because that

1596. is what Jesus has done for us please pray

1597. with me dear father in heaven we thank you

1598. for your word that reminds us of the way

1599. to go it reminds us of the way of life we

1600. ask that you'd help us today you'd show us

1601. the places where we're tempted to choose

1602. people over profit profit over people and

1603. that you'd move in our hearts that we would

1604. choose people over profit we ask that you do

1605. this not because we desire to prove

1606. something to you or earn something from you

1607. but because we know that we can't and you

1608. have and so we ask these things in Jesus

  1609. name amen
