  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  4. If you are new or visiting with us, welcome.

  5. We're glad that you're here.

  6. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we are following after Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow after Jesus, we've become convinced that there's no one so good that they don't need God's grace,

  9. and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  10. And it's for that reason that we come every Sunday to look at God's word,

  11. because we believe that God has something to say to us.

  12. And that's what we're doing now.

  13. If you have been with us, you know that we're in the book of Psalms.

  14. And as I told you last Sunday, we will not be in the book of Psalms for the next three years.

  15. We're in the book of Psalms through the end of the summer.

  16. And then we're going to start a series on 1 Peter.

  17. So don't be afraid, even when you see these early number of Psalms.

  18. And if you know, there's 150 Psalms.

  19. So fear not.

  20. I've given you a lot of different categories to think about the Psalms.

  21. One of them is that they're the standard operating procedure for the Christian life.

  22. They give us the way to act when we encounter all sorts of situations and circumstances.

  23. I've told you that they're poems.

  24. They make complicated things simple.

  25. They take things that maybe are hard to understand and they boil them down.

  26. I told you recently that they're also a guide to prayer.

  27. The Psalms teach us how to pray.

  28. And we've seen all sorts of varieties of Psalms.

  29. We've seen Psalms of Lament.

  30. Those were some of the first Psalms that we looked at this summer.

  31. We looked at an imprecatory Psalm, a Psalm that prays for God's justice in Psalm 5.

  32. We looked most recently, last week, at a penitential Psalm, a Psalm praying for God's grace and His forgiveness.

  33. And we're going to come to a new category of Psalm today.

  34. New for the summer.

  35. We actually looked at it in December when we looked at the Psalms during Advent.

  36. And this is a Psalm of praise.

  37. And Psalms of praise introduce another category for us of what the Psalms do.

  38. So if you are a parent, one of the things that you want for your child is you want them to love and celebrate certain things.

  39. And you want them to grieve and mourn and hate other things.

  40. And one of the things that's most heartbreaking is if you have a child and they love and celebrate things that you grieve.

  41. And they grieve things that you celebrate.

  42. So what you want to do as you're raising them and nurturing them and training them is you want them to grow in their emotions.

  43. You want them to understand what's good and beautiful in the world.

  44. And you want them to love that.

  45. And you also want them to understand what's dangerous and terrible in the world.

  46. And you want them to grieve and stay away from that.

  47. And what the Psalms do for us, besides all these other things that we've looked at, is the Psalms shape our emotions.

  48. The Psalms teach us what it is that God wants us to love and celebrate.

  49. And what it is he wants us to grieve and mourn.

  50. And that's what happens when we look at a psalm of praise, which is this Psalm 8 before us.

  51. Psalms of praise are ones that talk to us about how it is and why it is that we love and celebrate God and what he's done.

  52. Now, praise is a difficult concept, I think, to wrap our heads around.

  53. Because it's not a word that I hear used outside of the church very often.

  54. And so sometimes it can feel like something that's maybe a little corny or cheesy when people talk about praise.

  55. But I'm going to submit to you today that praise is an essential part of being human, number one.

  56. And second, it's something that we do all the time.

  57. So if you're anything like me, anytime you buy something or purchase something,

  58. and it used to be when you purchased something online, but now it could even be when you purchase something in person,

  59. you're almost certainly going to receive an email.

  60. And this email says,

  61. Sing praises to us.

  62. It doesn't actually say that.

  63. What it does say is,

  64. Would you please write us a review?

  65. And so every time someone sends you asking you for a review,

  66. what they're asking for is your praise.

  67. And if you're like me,

  68. most of the time you ignore it because you don't have time to praise people's products online.

  69. You have more important things to do.

  70. But if it's someone or something that you really care about,

  71. someone that you have a personal relationship with,

  72. you do.

  73. You want to praise them.

  74. So many of you know that I recently bought a house,

  75. and my realtor asked for my review.

  76. And of course, there was nothing I'd want to do more, right?

  77. Because I loved my realtor.

  78. And I thought she had done such a fantastic job and helped me in so many ways.

  79. And so the first thing I did was go and immediately write a song of praise.

  80. I wrote a review telling everyone how great my realtor is.

  81. And so praise is not something that's just for those inside of the church.

  82. It's not just for Christians.

  83. Praise is something that's part of our lives.

  84. It's part of what it means to be human.

  85. C.S. Lewis, I mentioned this in December.

  86. When he first became a Christian, he struggled with praise.

  87. But then he came to realize, what we're talking about now,

  88. that this is something that's essential.

  89. And he realized that people who do not praise,

  90. and he says this,

  91. are like people who've never been in love.

  92. They're like people who can't hear music.

  93. And they're like people who have never read a good book.

  94. In other words, praise is what we do for anything that we care about.

  95. And so when God asks for our praise,

  96. he's commanding us to do what we would do for anything else.

  97. And yet he's much more worthy of our praise.

  98. Now me explaining all of these things to you,

  99. and explaining how praise is part of our lives,

  100. does not make praise any easier.

  101. Praise is still a challenging and difficult concept.

  102. If you're like me, you don't necessarily wake up every Sunday morning,

  103. and your first thought when your alarm goes off is,

  104. I just can't wait until I can begin praising God.

  105. Now if you are one of those people,

  106. I'm glad for you.

  107. That's what God wants for all of us,

  108. and yet it's not something that's natural.

  109. We don't always find ourselves walking around in this world

  110. moved by praise for God.

  111. And so that's why God's given us these psalms.

  112. All the psalms of praise are answering the question of why God is so great.

  113. And they're also helping us understand how it is that we can stir up our hearts

  114. that we're filled with love and praise for God.

  115. I've talked a lot recently in previous psalms

  116. about having hope and trust and faith and confidence in God.

  117. These psalms certainly have that,

  118. but they're more about how we have love and celebration of God.

  119. How do we stir up praise for God

  120. so we appreciate Him and understand His greatness more than anything else?

  121. That's what this psalm is going to present to us.

  122. I've talked also in the past,

  123. it's been a while,

  124. but about the importance of bookends in the Bible.

  125. If you're reading a passage of Scripture

  126. and you see the same thing appear

  127. at the beginning and the end,

  128. Jesus does this in His parables sometimes,

  129. this is a way of saying this is the point of this passage.

  130. So I'm not going to bury the lead in Psalm 8.

  131. There's one point,

  132. it shows up in verses 1 and verse 9,

  133. very beginning and the very end,

  134. and it says,

  135. O Lord, our Lord,

  136. how majestic is Your name in all the earth.

  137. That's the bread to the sandwich of the psalm.

  138. And everything else is going to help us understand

  139. why God's name is majestic.

  140. This is like,

  141. if we come across psalms of praise,

  142. because there's many of them,

  143. it's like different reviews of the same product.

  144. If you go and look at something online,

  145. you might read many reviews,

  146. some of them are going to say the same thing over and over,

  147. so you understand this is very important about this product.

  148. Some of them are going to say different things.

  149. You might have one review that gives you a special insight.

  150. Same is true with the psalms of praise.

  151. Same is true with Psalm 8.

  152. It's going to tell us some of the things we saw in December,

  153. and it's going to tell us new things as well.

  154. It's going to help us understand why God is worth our praise.

  155. And what we can do,

  156. even when we don't feel like praising God,

  157. to stir up our love and our celebration of Him.

  158. And so it's with that question that we come to this psalm,

  159. and this psalm is going to answer it.

  160. It's going to tell us how it is,

  161. why it is that we praise God.

  162. And so with that introduction,

  163. we're going to read Psalm 8.

  164. I'm going to read it.

  165. You're welcome to follow along in your worship guide.

  166. This is printed near the end of your worship guide.

  167. You'll also find it in your Bible.

  168. You might be able to find it on your phone.

  169. And remember,

  170. as we come to this portion of God's Word,

  171. that God tells us that His Word is

  172. more precious than gold,

  173. even the finest gold.

  174. And He tells us that it is sweeter than honey,

  175. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  176. And so that is why we come week after week

  177. to hear what God has to say.

  178. That's why we're going to start now in verse 1.

  179. Verse 3.

  180. Verse 3.

  181. Verse 9.

  182. I invite you to pray with me

  183. as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  184. Father in heaven,

  185. we thank you again

  186. that you have given us your Word.

  187. You haven't left us to try to figure out

  188. what is good and right

  189. and what is evil and bad in this world on our own.

  190. You haven't left us to

  191. walk by ourselves,

  192. but instead you have

  193. given us your Word.

  194. You've spoken to us

  195. so that we would understand and know.

  196. You're like a good Father

  197. who wants to shape us

  198. and teach us

  199. what to celebrate

  200. and also teach us what to grieve.

  201. We ask that you would

  202. do that now

  203. as we look at Psalm 8,

  204. that you would help us,

  205. that you'd send your Spirit,

  206. that we would be able to see

  207. and understand

  208. and believe

  209. everything that you've written for us

  210. in your Word.

  211. We ask this

  212. not because we deserve it

  213. or have earned it,

  214. but because Jesus

  215. deserves it

  216. and has earned it for us.

  217. And so we ask it in His name.

  218. Amen.

  219. I have mentioned before

  220. that I had not been ever

  221. into the state of Colorado

  222. until 2016

  223. and that was just on the way

  224. on a road trip out to Utah

  225. to see the national parks out there,

  226. especially Zion National Park.

  227. What I have not told you about that trip

  228. is that we made a detour

  229. on the way back

  230. and the detour was to be able

  231. to visit the Grand Canyon.

  232. We didn't have much time,

  233. but everyone on the trip

  234. thought we would be

  235. making a serious and grave error

  236. if we did not at least stop by

  237. for a couple hours.

  238. We're within striking distance

  239. of the Grand Canyon.

  240. We've never seen it.

  241. We have to make sure we're there.

  242. So we just dropped by

  243. for a little bit.

  244. We showed up on the south rim

  245. and if you've been there,

  246. you know you go out

  247. and you look across layers

  248. and layers of rock

  249. and there's many things going on

  250. when you look at these layers.

  251. Some people are looking with you.

  252. Some people are taking selfies.

  253. Some people are on their phones.

  254. But as I stood there

  255. and I looked out across

  256. the expanse of the south rim

  257. and I saw layers and layers of rock

  258. that went down for miles,

  259. there was only one thing

  260. that I could think

  261. and it's that I felt

  262. very, very, very small.

  263. I did not feel like

  264. a great or significant person

  265. in the world.

  266. I didn't feel like

  267. I had tremendous influence

  268. or power.

  269. Instead, I realized

  270. I am a small little ant

  271. on the side of this great canyon.

  272. That's exactly what the psalmist

  273. is telling us

  274. in verses 3 and 4.

  275. Why is God's name

  276. so majestic

  277. in all the earth?

  278. By the way,

  279. this word about majestic,

  280. this glory

  281. that we're told about

  282. in verses 1 and 2,

  283. this strength,

  284. is saying what we've seen before,

  285. that God is a great king.

  286. It's easy to have

  287. a truncated theology

  288. where we just think

  289. of God as our redeemer

  290. and he certainly is that.

  291. God brings salvation.

  292. He redeems us from sin.

  293. The psalms also remind us

  294. that he is not just our redeemer

  295. but our king

  296. and our creator.

  297. And so as we're looking

  298. at how and why

  299. we praise the king,

  300. the first thing the psalmist does

  301. is he looks up

  302. at the heavens.

  303. Verse 3,

  304. he's not looking

  305. at the Grand Canyon.

  306. More likely,

  307. he's sitting out

  308. in a night sky

  309. looking up

  310. at all the stars

  311. that God's created

  312. and as he looks

  313. at the creation,

  314. he's not touched

  315. by light pollution

  316. in the way that we are.

  317. All he can do

  318. is feel very,

  319. very small.

  320. Verse 4,

  321. what is man

  322. that you are mindful of him

  323. and the son of man

  324. that you care for him?

  325. God is the great creator.

  326. He is so great

  327. and so powerful

  328. that he can make things

  329. like the Grand Canyon

  330. and that is nothing

  331. compared to making

  332. the constellations

  333. and the stars

  334. and the universe.

  335. And yet this great God,

  336. verse 4,

  337. still is mindful

  338. and cares for small,

  339. little humans.

  340. This great God

  341. still cares

  342. and is mindful

  343. for small,

  344. little humans.

  345. God's greatness

  346. shows us

  347. how great his love is.

  348. It's one thing

  349. for another person

  350. in this world

  351. to love us

  352. and care for us.

  353. That's glorious

  354. in and of itself.

  355. It's even more amazing

  356. that someone

  357. so powerful as God

  358. would also care for us

  359. and love us.

  360. One of the moments

  361. of praise

  362. that the Psalms

  363. hold out over and over again

  364. is God's creation.

  365. That God uses his world,

  366. the world around us

  367. that he's made

  368. to stir up our love

  369. and our appreciation

  370. for him.

  371. Because it reminds us

  372. of two things

  373. as it reminds the psalmist here.

  374. First,

  375. that God is so great.

  376. He's so great

  377. that he can make

  378. the heavens and the earth.

  379. And second,

  380. he's so loving.

  381. Despite our smallness,

  382. God still delights

  383. to care for us

  384. and provide for us.

  385. Despite our smallness,

  386. God still delights

  387. to care for us

  388. and provide for us.

  389. The creator of the universe

  390. cares intimately for us.

  391. God still does not.

  392. God still does not.

  393. God still does not.

  394. I had a professor

  395. in seminary

  396. who did what many people do,

  397. which is come out

  398. to Colorado on vacation.

  399. In fact,

  400. when I moved out

  401. to Colorado

  402. and I started telling people

  403. this is where I'm going,

  404. I had so many folks

  405. tell me,

  406. I'm incredibly jealous.

  407. That's where I go

  408. for vacation.

  409. You're going to get to live

  410. where I only get to spend

  411. a week or two every year.

  412. And so this professor

  413. had been out in Colorado

  414. in the Rockies

  415. over the summer

  416. and he came back

  417. to St. Louis,

  418. hot and muggy and flat.

  419. And he said that he and his wife

  420. would go out hiking

  421. in the mountains.

  422. And there came one point

  423. as he looked out

  424. at the Rockies,

  425. he began to cry.

  426. And as he began to cry,

  427. he thought,

  428. the God who made

  429. these mountains

  430. also knows my name.

  431. The God who made

  432. these mountains

  433. also knows my name.

  434. And he was out at

  435. the beauty that we take

  436. for granted here.

  437. He was moved to tears.

  438. Why is God's name majestic

  439. in all the earth?

  440. His name is majestic

  441. in all the earth

  442. because he not only

  443. made the mountains,

  444. but he also knows our name.

  445. And so if you're struggling,

  446. like many of us,

  447. if not all of us,

  448. to praise God,

  449. to be filled with a sense

  450. of God's power

  451. and his wonder,

  452. one of the things

  453. God asks us

  454. and commands us

  455. and tells us to do

  456. is to look at

  457. his creation.

  458. Let the natural world

  459. remind you of God's power

  460. and his care.

  461. As you drive west

  462. and look at

  463. the front range,

  464. you can remember

  465. that the God

  466. who made those mountains

  467. knows your name.

  468. If you're struggling

  469. to remember God's greatness

  470. and his power

  471. and his love,

  472. go outside.

  473. God's creation

  474. for the Christian,

  475. God's creation

  476. is important

  477. for our spiritual lives.

  478. It is spiritual

  479. to go out

  480. into nature

  481. and recognize

  482. everything that God

  483. has done

  484. and made.

  485. If you think

  486. you are somebody

  487. or something,

  488. God's creation

  489. will quickly put that

  490. into perspective

  491. for you.

  492. If you think

  493. you are big,

  494. go to the south rim

  495. of the Grand Canyon

  496. and then you can

  497. feel small.

  498. Memorize Psalm 8.

  499. When you're outside,

  500. repeat it to yourself.

  501. Repeat it with your family.

  502. When you're driving

  503. and you look

  504. at everything

  505. that God's made,

  506. remember,

  507. when I look

  508. at your heavens,

  509. the work of your fingers,

  510. the moon and the stars

  511. which you have set in place,

  512. what is man

  513. that you are mindful

  514. of him

  515. and the son of man

  516. that you care for him.

  517. The psalmist here

  518. is literally looking

  519. at literal stars

  520. and it helps him

  521. get in touch

  522. with reality,

  523. what's most true

  524. in the world.

  525. There's many times

  526. in the afternoon,

  527. you know,

  528. we are about

  529. a mile away

  530. from Cheyenne Meadows Park

  531. and the walk

  532. from here

  533. to Cheyenne Meadows Park

  534. is a walk

  535. from the south

  536. to the north.

  537. And so there are

  538. many times

  539. in the afternoon

  540. where if I need a break

  541. I'll walk out of the church

  542. and I'll walk to the park

  543. and I'll walk back.

  544. And now I live

  545. in a house

  546. that's close to the park

  547. as well

  548. and so sometimes

  549. I'll do that too.

  550. I'll walk from there

  551. to the park

  552. and I'll walk back.

  553. And I can remember

  554. that whatever

  555. the reality

  556. of my emotions are

  557. in that moment

  558. and whatever

  559. the reality

  560. of my circumstances are,

  561. whatever's going on

  562. that day,

  563. I look up

  564. in the mountains

  565. and I realize

  566. that despite

  567. the reality

  568. of my emotions

  569. or my circumstances,

  570. the world

  571. has not fundamentally

  572. changed.

  573. the mountains

  574. are still there.

  575. God is still

  576. in control

  577. and He still

  578. cares for me

  579. and He is still

  580. mindful of me.

  581. That is why

  582. His name is majestic

  583. in all the earth.

  584. Now some of you

  585. might be thinking

  586. I don't need

  587. to believe in God

  588. to enjoy the creation.

  589. And if you're thinking

  590. that you would be

  591. correct.

  592. There are many people

  593. who do not worship

  594. God

  595. who enjoy

  596. His creation.

  597. And so you might be

  598. thinking

  599. why is it that

  600. I need to praise God

  601. I can enjoy

  602. this without Him.

  603. Well first of all

  604. yes you can

  605. certainly enjoy

  606. someone's work

  607. without giving them

  608. credit.

  609. However

  610. it's borderline

  611. theft.

  612. There's been a

  613. scandal recently

  614. with Amazon.com

  615. where there have

  616. been people

  617. putting fake books

  618. online,

  619. counterfeit books

  620. that look exactly

  621. like the originals.

  622. People order them

  623. they read them

  624. they enjoy them

  625. they get content

  626. out of them

  627. and no money

  628. goes to the author.

  629. The money goes

  630. to someone else.

  631. Don't give God's

  632. money

  633. His praise

  634. to someone else.

  635. Second

  636. Jesus tells us

  637. in Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  638. that the sun rises

  639. on the evil

  640. and the good

  641. and the rain

  642. falls on the just

  643. and the unjust.

  644. everyone enjoys

  645. the goodness

  646. of God's creation.

  647. However

  648. not everyone

  649. will enjoy

  650. the goodness

  651. of God's creation

  652. forever.

  653. Not everyone

  654. will enjoy

  655. the goodness

  656. of God's creation

  657. forever.

  658. But only those

  659. who have faith

  660. in Christ.

  661. Part of what

  662. we long for

  663. and look forward

  664. to

  665. in our eternal

  666. life

  667. life.

  668. Some people

  669. think that it

  670. will be

  671. something boring.

  672. But it in fact

  673. will be

  674. what C.S. Lewis

  675. tells us about

  676. in the last battle

  677. the last book

  678. of the Narnia series.

  679. It will be

  680. like this earth

  681. but even better.

  682. Like this creation

  683. but even more glorious.

  684. The phrase

  685. of the characters

  686. used in that book

  687. is that they keep

  688. going further in

  689. and further up.

  690. If you think

  691. God's creation

  692. is glorious now

  693. just wait.

  694. If you think

  695. God's creation

  696. is glorious now

  697. just wait.

  698. Now we don't

  699. just praise God

  700. because of his creation

  701. because he cares for us.

  702. That's verses

  703. three and four.

  704. But we also have

  705. verses five

  706. through eight.

  707. We don't just

  708. praise God

  709. for his glory.

  710. We praise God

  711. because he's

  712. allowed us

  713. to participate

  714. in it.

  715. The psalmist

  716. here is

  717. hearkening back

  718. to Genesis

  719. one and two

  720. when God

  721. gave mankind

  722. all of mankind

  723. the job

  724. of caring

  725. for the earth.

  726. He gave

  727. everyone a job

  728. which was to

  729. fill the earth

  730. and subdue it.

  731. He gave

  732. real authority

  733. to mankind.

  734. So when we

  735. do our job

  736. well

  737. the earth

  738. flourishes.

  739. creation

  740. flourishes

  741. the world

  742. flourishes

  743. civilization

  744. flourishes.

  745. When we do it

  746. poorly

  747. civilization

  748. and creation

  749. suffer.

  750. And God

  751. holds us

  752. accountable

  753. for how we

  754. do this

  755. how well

  756. we take

  757. care

  758. of his

  759. creation.

  760. Yet this

  761. is also

  762. a moment

  763. of praise

  764. for the psalmist.

  765. He praises

  766. God

  767. because God

  768. allows human

  769. beings

  770. these small

  771. tiny people

  772. who are nothing

  773. in comparison

  774. with God

  775. and his

  776. creation

  777. to actually

  778. be small

  779. kings.

  780. You notice

  781. in verse 1

  782. God is majestic

  783. and he has

  784. glory.

  785. Verse 5

  786. This same

  787. God

  788. has given

  789. man glory.

  790. You have

  791. made him

  792. a little

  793. lower than

  794. the heavenly

  795. beings

  796. and crowned

  797. him with

  798. glory and

  799. honor.

  800. In other

  801. words this

  802. great king

  803. has allowed

  804. mankind

  805. to operate

  806. as a lesser

  807. king

  808. as a regent.

  809. In the

  810. ancient world

  811. often what

  812. always happens

  813. is you

  814. would have

  815. an emperor

  816. who was

  817. over a

  818. great

  819. civilization

  820. and he

  821. would have

  822. provinces

  823. or areas

  824. that would

  825. be far

  826. far away

  827. from where

  828. his throne

  829. was.

  830. And so

  831. he would

  832. send a

  833. representative

  834. sometimes

  835. you might

  836. call this

  837. person a

  838. vice

  839. regent

  840. and this

  841. representative

  842. would represent

  843. the name

  844. of the

  845. emperor

  846. in that

  847. place.

  848. He would

  849. represent

  850. the emperor

  851. to the

  852. people who

  853. were under

  854. him

  855. and he

  856. would

  857. represent

  858. those

  859. people who

  860. were under

  861. him

  862. back to

  863. the

  864. emperor.

  865. The

  866. psalmist

  867. praises God

  868. because God

  869. has allowed

  870. us as

  871. mankind to

  872. represent God

  873. to this

  874. world.

  875. When we

  876. build and

  877. create civilization

  878. we are

  879. representing God

  880. to the

  881. creation.

  882. And then he

  883. has also

  884. allowed us to

  885. represent the

  886. creation back

  887. to him.

  888. And so when

  889. we praise God

  890. we are praising

  891. him ourselves

  892. we are also

  893. praising him on

  894. behalf of this

  895. entire world.

  896. And the

  897. psalmist is

  898. moved by the

  899. fact that

  900. God has

  901. made it

  902. wonderful and

  903. glorious to

  904. be human.

  905. He's given

  906. us the

  907. wonder and

  908. the glory of

  909. building

  910. civilization.

  911. He's giving

  912. us the

  913. wonder and

  914. the glory that

  915. comes from

  916. being able to

  917. raise children

  918. in the next

  919. generation.

  920. He's given

  921. us the

  922. wonder and

  923. glory of

  924. building cities.

  925. He's given

  926. us the

  927. wonder and

  928. the glory of

  929. creating

  930. institutions.

  931. He's given

  932. us the

  933. wonder and

  934. the glory of

  935. exploring his

  936. world and

  937. discovering new

  938. things.

  939. He's given

  940. us the

  941. wonder and

  942. the glory of

  943. taking things

  944. that are

  945. chaotic and

  946. bringing order

  947. to them.

  948. The

  949. psalmist

  950. praises God

  951. because God

  952. has crowned

  953. us, he's

  954. crowned humanity

  955. with glory and

  956. honor.

  957. He has made

  958. it wonderful and

  959. amazing to be

  960. human.

  961. And so as

  962. the psalmist goes

  963. about enjoying

  964. his work,

  965. everything good

  966. that God has

  967. made in this

  968. world but also

  969. everything good

  970. that God has

  971. given him to

  972. do, he

  973. realizes that

  974. the joy that

  975. comes from

  976. work, the

  977. joy that

  978. comes from

  979. building and

  980. creating things

  981. whether it's

  982. families or

  983. institutions or

  984. societies is a

  985. joy that God

  986. has given.

  987. It's a privilege

  988. that we do not

  989. deserve.

  990. God does not

  991. need us to run

  992. this world.

  993. And so we

  994. praise him because

  995. he's chosen to

  996. give us that

  997. responsibility.

  998. God does not

  999. need us to run

  1000. this world and

  1001. so we praise him

  1002. because he's

  1003. chosen to give us

  1004. that responsibility.

  1005. That is why the

  1006. psalmist can say,

  1007. O Lord, our

  1008. Lord, how

  1009. majestic is your

  1010. name in all the

  1011. earth.

  1012. We praise God

  1013. because he's

  1014. glorious.

  1015. Part of his

  1016. glory is revealed

  1017. in his care for

  1018. us.

  1019. verses 3 and 4

  1020. and the dignity

  1021. that he gives

  1022. us.

  1023. Verses 5 through

  1024. 8.

  1025. His glory is

  1026. revealed in the

  1027. care he has for

  1028. us.

  1029. Verses 3 and 4

  1030. and the dignity

  1031. he gives us.

  1032. Verses 5 through

  1033. 8.

  1034. Now this psalm,

  1035. like all the rest

  1036. of the psalter,

  1037. continues from

  1038. God's people in

  1039. the Old Testament,

  1040. Israel, to God's

  1041. people in the New

  1042. Testament, the

  1043. church.

  1044. I mentioned when

  1045. we looked at

  1046. Psalm 1 that it

  1047. was quoted or

  1048. alluded to more

  1049. than any other

  1050. psalm.

  1051. Psalm 8 is also

  1052. high on the list

  1053. of psalms quoted

  1054. in the New

  1055. Testament.

  1056. And what the

  1057. New Testament

  1058. authors do over

  1059. and over again

  1060. is they apply

  1061. this psalm to

  1062. Jesus.

  1063. And they apply

  1064. it to Jesus in

  1065. several ways.

  1066. First,

  1067. O Lord, our

  1068. Lord, how

  1069. majestic is your

  1070. name in all the

  1071. earth.

  1072. that name,

  1073. that praise,

  1074. also belongs to

  1075. Jesus.

  1076. We don't just

  1077. praise the

  1078. Father, but we

  1079. also praise the

  1080. Son.

  1081. Second, it's

  1082. through Jesus

  1083. that God shows

  1084. his care for us

  1085. ultimately and

  1086. finally and fully.

  1087. So we saw in

  1088. verse 4, God is

  1089. mindful of us and

  1090. he cares for us.

  1091. He's mindful of

  1092. us and he cares

  1093. for us.

  1094. Even before sin

  1095. entered the world,

  1096. he was mindful and

  1097. cared for mankind

  1098. in Genesis 1, but

  1099. he showed his

  1100. kindness and his

  1101. care how much

  1102. and how great it

  1103. was by continuing

  1104. to care for

  1105. mankind and be

  1106. mindful of him

  1107. even after he

  1108. failed in the job

  1109. that God had

  1110. given him, even

  1111. after he rebelled.

  1112. God's care is

  1113. revealed for us by

  1114. the fact that he

  1115. sent his Son to

  1116. die for us and

  1117. pay the penalty

  1118. for our sins to

  1119. take the punishment

  1120. that we deserved

  1121. so that we could

  1122. continue to enjoy

  1123. God and praise

  1124. his name and

  1125. live in the world

  1126. that he created.

  1127. And so God's

  1128. care and his

  1129. mindfulness is

  1130. shown most of

  1131. all in Jesus.

  1132. Jesus reveals

  1133. God's care.

  1134. But Jesus also

  1135. fulfills and

  1136. completes and

  1137. accomplishes the

  1138. job that God

  1139. gave us.

  1140. He didn't just

  1141. take the penalty

  1142. for our sins,

  1143. but he did what

  1144. we were not

  1145. supposed to do,

  1146. what we were

  1147. supposed to do,

  1148. but failed in

  1149. doing.

  1150. We read

  1151. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  1152. 2 as our

  1153. New Testament

  1154. reading.

  1155. If you were

  1156. paying attention,

  1157. you know that

  1158. that Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  1159. chapter 2,

  1160. it's in your

  1161. worship guide,

  1162. directly quotes

  1163. this psalm.

  1164. And it tells us

  1165. a couple things

  1166. after it quotes

  1167. them, quotes

  1168. it.

  1169. It says in

  1170. verse 8,

  1171. In other words,

  1172. Psalm 8 is

  1173. idealistic.

  1174. It is not

  1175. true that the

  1176. entire world is

  1177. under subjection

  1178. to us.

  1179. We still have

  1180. verse 2,

  1181. there are still

  1182. foes.

  1183. And there are

  1184. still things that

  1185. we cannot control

  1186. and subdue in

  1187. this world.

  1188. Part of that's

  1189. because of our

  1190. own sin and

  1191. failings.

  1192. We've chosen to

  1193. destroy the world

  1194. that God gave us

  1195. rather than care

  1196. for it.

  1197. Part of it is

  1198. because of our

  1199. lack of power

  1200. and ability.

  1201. We are not

  1202. able, we have

  1203. not yet subdued

  1204. every animal in

  1205. the world.

  1206. We do not have

  1207. control over the

  1208. fish of the sea.

  1209. And the author

  1210. of Hebrews tells

  1211. us then in the

  1212. next verse,

  1213. verse 9,

  1214. okay, so verse

  1215. 8, not everything

  1216. is in subjection

  1217. to us.

  1218. This is idealistic.

  1219. Verse 9,

  1220. But we see him

  1221. who for a little

  1222. while was made

  1223. lower than the

  1224. angels, namely

  1225. Jesus, crowned

  1226. with what?

  1227. Glory and honor

  1228. because of the

  1229. suffering of death

  1230. so that by the

  1231. grace of God

  1232. he might taste

  1233. death for everyone.

  1234. In other words,

  1235. we don't see

  1236. everything in

  1237. Psalm 8 being

  1238. true right now,

  1239. but we do

  1240. see Jesus.

  1241. Jesus.

  1242. We don't see

  1243. everything in

  1244. Psalm 8 as

  1245. being true

  1246. right now,

  1247. but we do

  1248. see Jesus.

  1249. And so the

  1250. hope that is

  1251. put forward in

  1252. Psalm 8,

  1253. the reasons that

  1254. we praise God

  1255. are incomplete

  1256. now, but

  1257. complete in

  1258. Christ.

  1259. In other words,

  1260. we don't see all

  1261. things under

  1262. subjection, but

  1263. when Jesus comes

  1264. back in his

  1265. second coming,

  1266. we will.

  1267. And in his

  1268. first coming,

  1269. he has already

  1270. put all things

  1271. under subjection.

  1272. Death has been

  1273. conquered.

  1274. That's part of

  1275. what we saw in

  1276. our preparation

  1277. for worship in

  1278. 1 Corinthians.

  1279. It's been put

  1280. under his feet.

  1281. It's the same

  1282. language that

  1283. comes from

  1284. Psalm 8.

  1285. And so we

  1286. praise God,

  1287. we tell him

  1288. that his name

  1289. is majestic

  1290. in all the

  1291. earth, and we

  1292. do it because

  1293. of his care

  1294. for us.

  1295. His care is

  1296. shown for the

  1297. fact that he

  1298. thinks of us

  1299. and moves

  1300. towards us,

  1301. even though he's

  1302. the great

  1303. creator.

  1304. We also

  1305. praise him for

  1306. the dignity

  1307. that he gives

  1308. us.

  1309. He doesn't

  1310. need us to

  1311. be his

  1312. representatives in

  1313. this world,

  1314. and yet he's

  1315. chosen us to

  1316. do it.

  1317. And we can

  1318. have love and

  1319. celebration of

  1320. God because we

  1321. know all of

  1322. these things are

  1323. true.

  1324. We know they're

  1325. true because of

  1326. Jesus, that he

  1327. reveals and

  1328. demonstrates and

  1329. seals God's

  1330. care for us.

  1331. And even as

  1332. we fail to

  1333. achieve the

  1334. dignity that

  1335. God has set

  1336. out for us,

  1337. Jesus achieves

  1338. it for us.

  1339. And so we

  1340. look to him

  1341. and hope in

  1342. him.

  1343. We love him

  1344. and we

  1345. celebrate him.

  1346. And most of

  1347. all we say,

  1348. oh Lord,

  1349. our Lord,

  1350. how majestic

  1351. is your name

  1352. in all the

  1353. earth.

  1354. Please pray

  1355. with me.

  1356. dear Father in

  1357. heaven, we

  1358. confess that

  1359. your name is

  1360. majestic, that

  1361. you are worthy

  1362. of our glory and

  1363. honor.

  1364. We also

  1365. confess that we

  1366. struggle sometimes

  1367. to have love

  1368. and praise for

  1369. you.

  1370. And so we ask

  1371. that you would

  1372. remind us of

  1373. your care for

  1374. us, and you

  1375. remind us of the

  1376. dignity that you've

  1377. given us, and

  1378. that you would use

  1379. it to stir up

  1380. love and

  1381. affection for

  1382. you as we

  1383. follow you with

  1384. faith.

  1385. We ask these

  1386. things not because

  1387. we have earned

  1388. them, but because

  1389. Jesus has glory

  1390. and honor in the

  1391. name above all

  1392. names because he's

  1393. earned them for us.

1394. And so we ask it

  1395. in his name.

  1396. Amen.
